Many people who write about horror literature maintain that mood is its most important element. Stephen King disagrees: "My deeply held conviction is that story must be paramount.... All other considerations are secondary--theme, mood, even characterization and language."
These fine stories, each written in what King calls "a burst of faith, happiness, and optimism," prove his point. The theme, mood, characters, and language vary, but throughout, a sense of story reigns supreme. Nightmares & Dreamscapes contains 20 short tales--including several never before published--plus one teleplay, one poem, and one nonfiction piece about kids and baseball that appeared in the New Yorker. The subjects include vampires, zombies, an evil toy, man-eating frogs, the burial of a Cadillac, a disembodied finger, and a wicked stepfather. The style ranges from King's well-honed horror to a Ray Bradbury-like fantasy voice to an ambitious pastiche of Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald. And like a compact disc with a bonus track, the book ends with a charming little tale not listed in the table of contents--a parable called "The Beggar and the Diamond." --Fiona Webster
Book Description
Wonderful...an illusionist extraordinaire, King peoples his fiction with believable characters. (Publishers Weekly)
Twenty superlative stories that take King's millions of fans where they never dreamed of going before. Included, too, are a telescript that made home screen history, a startling poem, and an essay that Stephen King regards as his best nonfiction writing.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Collection of King's Short Stories!.......2007-09-16
King is a master writer, and I enjoyed this collection. I loved "Umney's Last Case" (evocative of 1930s crime fiction). Also liked the "House on Maple Street" (it kept me turning the pages).
The book is worth it for the introductory essay by Steven King. Here are some of the great lines from that essay:
"When I was a kid I believed everything I was told, everything I read, and every dispatch sent out by my own overheated imagination. This made for more than a few sleepless nights, but it also filled the world I lived in with colors and textures I would not have traded for a lifetime of restful nights. I knew even then, you see, that there were people in the world--too many of them, actually--whose imaginative senses were eight numb or completely deadened, and who lived in a mental state skin to colorblindness."
Robert McCammon said something similar his brilliant coming-of-age novel, "Boy's Life"
"See, this is my opinion: we all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God's sake. And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic they knew made them ashamed and sad of what they'd allowed to wither in themselves."
Outstanding Recording.......2007-07-03
I love taking long drives, and when I take those long drives, I love listening to audiobooks. Let me set the stage: when I listened to Nightmares and Dreamscapes, I was on my way to 29 Palms from Texas, all by myself, via back roads. Dark, unlit, deserted back roads. Somewhat unwisely, I popped this tape in around 8pm, somewhere in New Mexico, just as the sun was starting to set and make everything shadowy. Needless to say, the stories were a bit scarier than they would have been had I read them safely in my own, well-lit house with the alarm system at the ready. I credit (blame!) the actors for this, for they were outstanding! For example:
Crouch End: read by Tim Curry, quite possibly the scariest man in existence. I was familiar with the Cthulu myth, but to hear it through the imagination of Stephen King and the excellent, creepy and threatening Mr. Curry was terrifying.
Rainy Season: the very idea of maniacal toads raining from the sky is absurd, and the voice of Lisa Simpson doesn't seem scary at all. But put the two together on a dark, deserted road and you have a recipe for real fear.
The rest of this volume of stories is very good, if thought-provoking rather than terrifying. Vengeance lovers, rejoice! Dolan's Cadillac is a must-read (listen), as is The House on Maple Street.
Great Collection of Stories.......2007-06-26
Another excellent example of Stephen King's work. His short stories are as suprising and well done as his longer novels. From man eating amphibians to killer toys to finger tapping, King's imagination seems to open up. My two personal favorites are Chattery Teeth and Rainy Season but none were a disappointment. An easy and definite read for all the Stephen King lovers.
THE NIGHT FLIER.......2006-11-04
IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY STORIES IN KING'S CLASSIC SHORT-STORIES AND NOVELLA'S. THIS BOOK SHOWS HIS MANY TALENTS AND MAKES YOU THINK, "WHERE DOES HE GET ALL THIS SUFF?" NIGHT FLIER WAS MY FAVORITE BECAUSE I LOVE VAMPIRE STORIES AND THIS ONE IS A GEM. NOT LIKE THE MOVIE WITH JOSE FERRAR, BUT MORE HORRIFYING WHEN YOU READ IT. I HOPE KING COMES BACK WITH ANOTHER GREAT VAMPIRE NOVEL LIKE "SALEM'S LOT" (MY ALL TIME FAVORITE. ANOTHER GREAT READ IS "DOLAN'S CADILLAC", IT'S HUMOROUS AND CLEVERLY DONE.
A Solid 4 Star For This SK Novella Compilation.......2006-07-21
Within the past three decades, Stephen King has ruled the literary world with his exquisite, passionate, colossal novels; easily read by the young and old alike. It's difficult to even run across the casual, "weekend reader" that hasn't at least thumbed through one of his books. One would think after conjuring up thirty-plus novels, two nonfiction books, a countless number of telescripts, and even composing six novels under his infamous "Bachman" pseudonym, that King would have the time to draft, revise, and publish seven novella collections over the years. The Nightmare and Dreamscapes compilation nestles itself into the middle of the pack in chronological terms as well as substance. The beauty (and the beast) of novella collections such as this, is the certainty that most readers will love some stories and despise others. It's all a matter of subjective taste of course, and having to face the reality that you (the reader) will have to painfully sludge through the mud to get to the gold.
Without becoming long winded, Nightmares and Dreamscapes represents some of the best non-horror work I've ever read from Stephen King. "Umney's Last Case" and "Head Down" are my personal earmarked selections of noteworthy enjoyment. "Crouch End" turned out to be quiet nice, as well as "The End of the Whole Mess", "The Night Flyer", and "Suffer the Little Children". The remaining stories are humdrum at best but most are worthy of one read through.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes is a must read for any Steve King fan, however casual fans who may not care much for the horror genre should find a certain level of delight as well.

Book Description
Murder strikes thrice in these three baffling mysteries of crime and detection. First, Stout's great detective, Nero Wolfe, develops an appetite for the sweet taste of revenge when someone slips something most foul into his lunch. Then, a couturier's beautiful sister uses Archie Goodwin, Wolfe's man about town, as her ready-made alibi - and maybe fall guy - unless Wolfe can spot the loose ends in a nearly seamless crime. Finally, Wolfe has a run-in with the law after a mysterious old woman leaves a package at the detective's West Thirty-fifth Street brownstone that pits him against a cunning criminal - and the U.S. government.
"Nero Wolfe...part of our folklore." (New York Times)
Customer Reviews:
3 short stories.......2003-07-25
Death Times Three is not a complete novel, but rather a collection of 3 short stories, 'Bitter End', 'Frame-up For Murder' and 'Assault on a Brownstone'.
The best is 'Bitter End' where Nero Wolfe is determined to find the culprit who has been tampering with his favorite brand of pate. If he solves a murder in the meantime that's just a bonus.
Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories are an interesting mix of American and British mystery writing. Nero Wolf is an eccentric loner in the British tradition of Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot. The stories are narrated by Wolfe's sidekick Archie Goodwin, similar to Poirot's Captain Hastings. However the character and narrative manner of Goodwin is more in the line of the American tradition of Phillip Marlowe, and the Continental-Op.
Wolfe redux.......2002-05-12
All three of the stories herein were previously published in different forms, one of which wasn't even a Wolfe story.
"Assault on a Brownstone" - Rewrite of "Counterfeit for Murder" from _Homicide Trinity_. Hattie Annis, who operates a rooming house in New York City, found some counterfeit money and wants a reward, but the case quickly turns into a murder investigation.
"Frame-Up for Murder" - Expanded rewrite of "Murder Is No Joke" from _And Four To Go_. Flora Gallant, the sister of famous dress designer Alec Gallant, hires Wolfe and Archie to break Bianca Voss' mysterious hold over her brother. While questioning an interested party via telephone, Wolfe and Archie hear a murder - or do they? Was it genuine, or was the killer playing games to mess up the time of death?
"Bitter End" - 11-12 July, 1939. Take the plot and cast of Stout's Tecumseh Fox novel _Bad for Business_, replace Fox with Archie and Wolfe, and cut it down to a short story. The entry into the story is different, of course, since Amy Duncan isn't the focus; Wolfe is served with some of the quinine-tainted Tingley's products and takes it as an insult.

William Shakespeare has become the preeminent playwright of Elizabethan England, but his success comes with a price--his son Hamnet has disappeared in the realm of the Elven King, and Will must face the powers of darkness to rescue him.
Customer Reviews:
Show, Don't Tell.......2004-02-11
I finished reading _Any Man So Daring_ right after the previous book in the series, _All Night Awake_. (The first book, _Ill Met by Moonlight_, I read some time ago and don't remember as well.) Both books are good; interesting takes on Shakespeare and his era, and full of action. But, they share a common flaw.
The major characters are all often conflicted as to their feelings, their views of other characters, their motivations, and the decisions they must make. That's not inherently a flaw; indeed, it could enhance dramatic tension. But in these books it doesn't.
Every major character has one central conflict. Every single time he/she experiences it (which is often), the author includes a full page of recapitulation of the character's conflict and situation, in one-sentence paragraphs rather like a list. The list is usually about the same as when the last time that character's conflict was described. This ends up being highly repetitive. Then there are frequent recapitulations of the plot earlier in the same book and previous books in the series.
These two books would have been improved by the author showing the characters' feelings, conflicts, etc. mostly through dialog and action. Instead of endless lists of their internal feelings and the author's recapitulation of their situation.
Fine Shakespeare fantasy tale.......2003-11-06
Christopher Marlowe was considered the leading playwright of the sixteenth century until he dies. His mantle after a brief vacuum passed on to William Shakespeare, who has problems coping with fame now that the Elizabethan court recognizes his talent. He knows that Marlowe's death and his own dealings with the Elven king Quicksilver were the catalyst. He deeply regrets the price feeling he lost more than he gained by his encounter with the elves and remains haunted by Marlowe who Will knows died at the hands of a malevolent essence.
William learns that his son Hamnet has been abducted in the elven forest. Distraught the playwright concludes that Quicksilver kidnapped his son. When he races to the woods near his hometown of Stratford to confront Quicksilver, he finds out that his nemesis is innocent, but a blood relative of the King has set in motion a plot to take over the throne. Will William and Quicksilver partner to save a lad and a throne or is the past too much to overcome?
The third Shakespeare fantasy tale retains all the fun, excitement, and magic of its delightful predecessors (see ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT and ALL NIGHT AWAKE). The story line is action-packed and the cast (historical human, literary human, elven, and other supernatural creatures) is fascinating. Readers see a wildly different Shakespeare from the legendary author as he struggles with the otherworldly, what happened to his friend and rival, and now his son. Sara A. Hoyt brings new meaning to the Bard as she provides a delightful Elizabethan fantasy thriller that demands more such tales (Canterbury anyone?).

excellent for starting a discussion.......2004-12-06
This book demonstrates a wide variety of ways in which people are different by having a different child on each page who tells about one things that is different about themselves. The types of differences vary from hair color, size, age, likes, grandparents, house, language, adoption, and more. It doesn't seem preachy at all to me. It just presents a variety of ways in which people are different, and most show contentment with being who they are. Some express the negative feelings that can come from not being "one of the crowd", as well.
Good message damaged by preachy presentation.......2001-09-03
While my 3-1/2 year old daughter seems to like this book well enough, I dislike reading it to her. The message is a positive one (we're all different in some way) and relies on interesting examples (food allergies, for example). However, the overall product is preachy and rather dull. Without a plot, just a series of kids who each describe the way in which they are different, it isn't much fun to read.
Our "differences" make us all unique and special!.......2000-03-26
A gently written and beautifully illustrated book on what makes us all different and uniquely ourselves. Pre-schoolers as well as elementary age children will want to read this one over and over again. (I raised my two sons with this book and it continued to be one of their favorites). Dora Leder's pencil illustrations are almost "photo" perfect and capture the snapshots of activities and differences that author, Norma Simon so quietly describes. "Why Am I Different" (no matter how many times I read it with my children) always invoked dialogue and opportunities for discussions on understanding the many differences that make people so unique. This is a gem of a book and I am delighted to see it is still so ready available.

Helpful, Concise, Complete, Needed.......2006-11-06
An excellent book for E-Bay sellers (or buyers) -- a fine listing of almost anything you can think of to sell, and the approx price of them. I found it to be very useful for my e-bay business.
Not for the serious user.......2006-01-17
but then again, what other kind of user wld attempt such a big book?
it's very very vague, even for a beginner.
Tons of information for newcomers and oldies.......2006-01-06
This book is packed full of information for anyone who uses ebay. Buyers and Sellers, they've got everything you will ever need to know in here. I would recommend this book if your needing some extra cash and you are going to use ebay. This book will show you how to milk the most out of ebay and attract more members. It will show you how to get the word out, make your auction look more professional, and tons of do's and dont's of ebay.
Look elsewhere first.......2005-04-02
An average book. Does not contain any information that the other books don't contain. I recommend looking at other eBay books instead of this one. An overuse of white space makes this book very big.
After reading the top eBay books, below are my recommendations:
---Beginner with eBay and computers---
1. The Official eBay Bible
---eBay Seller---
1. Sell it on eBay
2. eBay Hacks
---Full-Time eBay Business (not for the casual seller)---
1. eBay Strategies
2. eBay Business the Smart Way
Ho Hum.......2005-01-29
Very basic information. This book is for the beginner just learning the ropes about eBay. If you have been using the site for some time now, then you know just as much as whats in this book.
The resources for sellers to find "wholesale" products were terrible. The sites basically sell junk or overpriced refurbs.

Let quilting guru Pat Sloan show you how it's done with this collection of 11 charming quilts. Beginner and advanced quilters will love stitching up her trademark whimsical designs, including Star Crazy with its ring of dancing stars and August Blooms, for a bold, colonial look. Customer Reviews:
IMHO, the best of Pat's books!.......2007-04-03
Although it's one of Pat Sloan's older books, this is my favorite - lots of great patterns, more bang for the buck. Most of her newer books are done around one of her fabric collections - this one uses fabrics you are likely to have in your stash already.

Touching the hearts of women!.......2003-04-30
This book has been a tremendous blessing in my life. When we open our hearts and explore the true struggles we face instead of trying to live a phony life, God has an opportunity to shape and mold us. We can become useful vessels to Him like Billie.
