Book Description

Nine O’Clock Blue tells the lyrical but gripping tale of a man haunted by his past and a young girl, Delia May Burris, whose family battles the racism of the pre-civil rights South. Delia confronts her childhood trauma again as an adult during the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest. She seeks solutions in the wilderness and stumbles into an environmental controversy. One surprising turn of events after another brings her face-to-face with her nemesis. Mystery, history and a touch of magic realism bring this poignant story to life.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2004-09-07

I just finished reading Nine O'Clock Blue and it was fabulous. I was intrigued at the mysterious beginning and loved following the lead character throughout the book. The twist at the end was shocking, but really tied the whole story together well. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating page turner from beginning to end........2001-05-04

Nine O'Clock Blue got my attention with the riveting first page and
never let me down through to the equally exciting and unexpected
ending.

Poetic and vivid in its description of the times, places and
events that shaped the life of the intriguing main character Delia May
Burris. Her tragic life experiences help us to understand more about
our suffering society and explores the most challenging issue of
racial prejudice with compassion and insight.

In the end the skilled
and gifted writer Teresa Langness shows the potentially redeemable
goodness of humanity though characters who made choices we can admire
and emulate in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Experience the soul-journey of Nine O'Clock Blue.......2000-11-16

I just finished reading Nine O'Clock Blue and highly recommend this moving and engaging story. The soul-journey of its heroine takes you through a powerful range of human emotions and experience: from childhood innocence, to the demands of an adult awareness -- and its need to reconcile the unforgettable past with the hope and potential of the present. This is a gripping and compassionate story of the life of Delia Burris (from childhood, adolesence to adulthood) which chronologically unfolds against a backdrop of key, historic civil rights events -- masterfully interwoven with a poignant prose and mystical plot twists that are sure to keep all readers intrigued. Experience the journey of the Nine O'Clock Blue story, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood experiences illuminate an urban racial explosion.......2000-11-03

Choose an uninterrupted time to read this book whose layers of poetry, anguish and hope interweave to create world so terribly real that the reader becomes absorbed, transported by Langness' masterful storytelling. She addresses the eternal questions that separate and define people, that perpetuate divisions. The intimate experiences of family and small town life expose the tensions that explode in an urban nightmare. What is the role of the oppressed? the privileged? the observer? For those who wonder, Nine O'clock Blue provides both insight and inspiration through a gripping, compelling story intertwined with characters who remain your companions and settings that permeate your senses.

This ageless book belongs in your library, to reread, to share, to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Crossing Racial and Gender Lines.......2000-11-02

Teresa Langness is a wonderful literary writer who deserves attention from both critics and the public. She manages to cross racial and gender lines by virtually seeping into characters. I loved the novel on its own, but because she's white, I find the novel fascinating and amazing.

    Book Description

Having recently inherited ten million dollars from her French Grand-mère, Marie-Christine "Chrissy" Medici is enjoying the sun-drenched beaches and culinary delights of the French Riviera. Prompted by her Grand-mere, Chrissy takes the plunge into her dreamed-of literary career by purchasing Le Loup Garou, a small newspaper in Grasse. But her journalistic profession—and her very life—is threatened to be cut short when the newspaper's former editor is found in his sitting room, shot dead.

With the help of her sharp-witted Grand-mère, and the soft-spoken, impeccable cook Sister Angela from Cape Cod, Chrissy sets out to unravel the baffling chain of events that led up to the crime. But human emotions—envy, greed, the pain of lost love—cast suspicion on almost everyone involved. Can this trio of women outwit a deceptive and dangerous killer lurking in their very midst?

    4 out of 5 stars A delightful murder-mystery.......2004-09-03

Mary-Jane Deeb's first novel represents quite a departure from the type of writing she's accustomed to. A professor of international politics at American University and a Near East specialist for the Library of Congress, Deeb's previous books related to her fields of study. With MURDER ON THE RIVIERA, a delightful mystery, you get the distinct impression that there's a whole lot of creative imagination in that deceptively academic mind of hers.

Recent Yale graduate Marie-Christine de Medici --- yes, that de Medici family --- receives a somewhat premature inheritance of $10 million from her very much alive French grandmother, her Grand-mère. So alive is Grand-mère that she decides for Marie-Christine just how she should spend a portion of the money when she takes it upon herself to invest Marie-Christine's money in a local paper in her own hometown of Grasse, France, near Cannes. Yes, Grand-mère is very much the matriarch of the de Medici clan, or at least the French offshoot of it.

Marie-Christine's transition from heiress to working editor and publisher takes a sharp turn when the previous publisher is found murdered --- and every suspect is in some way associated with the newspaper. Things heat up for the budding journalist when several attempts are made on her life, presumably because the unknown perpetrator believes the murder victim gave her information on an unsolved, two-year-old murder just hours before his death.

As in any good mystery, not everyone is who they seem to be, and not everyone is without a few skeletons in their closets that make them prime candidates for a guilty verdict. Deeb handles all the twists and turns and subplots well, and turns out a pleasurable and satisfying read. She also has a wonderful sense of humor and subtly inserts evidence of it throughout the book, as in this admonition from Grand-mère and Marie-Christine's commentary: "'Don't drink on an empty stomach, cherie. Wine can get to your head very quickly.' It has got to my head, and I am quite happy with it there."

As enjoyable as the book is, it is not without its glitches. Thankfully, none are related to the plot. Glitch number one: Deeb frequently drops pronouns, resulting in the kind of sentences that sound as if they were dashed off in a journal or hastily written letter --- "am disappointed" or "cannot believe what I am hearing," that sort of thing. That's not a problem in and of itself, especially since the point-of-view character is an aspiring reporter.

But when a literary device like that is overused and inconsistent, it becomes distracting. I had to read a lot of sentences twice to figure out what the dropped pronoun would have been and therefore what the sentence was referring to. "Get up at the crack of dawn" --- is someone ordering her to do that, or is she "journaling" that? This dropped pronoun bit is also the only problem with the dialogue, which is otherwise believable and natural, and with the characterization, which is otherwise consistent. I just can't imagine all those diverse characters dropping all those pronouns all along the Riviera.

Glitch number two: Deeb uses lots of unfamiliar French phrases that are likely to stop readers who don't know any French and even those who have a basic knowledge of it. I spent way too much time searching my brain's database of college French trying to translate phrases like "sirop d'orgeat" (sounds like something you'd put on pancakes at a questionable party, n'est-ce pas?). Finding out it means "syrup of barley water" hardly helped identify it as the adult beverage it apparently is. Les martinis, anyone?

It's also a bit unlikely that a police investigator would not readily connect a certain sequence of numbers with a bank account, or that the police would not have thought to examine a certain set of newspaper photographs related to that earlier murder --- but I suspect I'm quibbling now. Ignore the French phrases, don't let the dropped pronouns get to you, and forgive the occasional implausible scenario. Just go ahead and enjoy the story.

Yeah I know, the word "Jihad" conjures up all manner of ignorant prejudices about Islam and the Middle East. The authors made a poor choice of words when they came up with the title for this release. Nonetheless, this is probably one of the best setting books released for Hunter: the Reckoning. Part of the Year of the Scarab setting, this book takes a closer look at Egypt and the Middle East. In fact, the introduction even goes a long way towards trying to dispell western stereotypes about the Middle East (even recommending further reading and viewing for more info on Islam, Arabic culture and the Middle East), and it does a wonderful job immersing itself in Arabic and Middle Eastern culture.

The first chapter introduces us to a number of Kiswah (the Arabic name for Imbued) and provides us with information on the Middle East. Theres a lexicon of terms used by Middle Eastern Hunters (all of whom share Arabic for some mystical reason; generally its held as proof that God chose the Hunters, as Arabic is seen as the language of God), as well as a basic introduction to Arabic culture. The major religions of the Middle East, such as Islam, Christianity and Judaism, are all mentioned. Then theres the "survival guide", which mentions general information on what to do, where to go and what monsters exist in Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and several other Middle Eastern countries. Chapter Two goes into the Kiswah's first attempts at working together, as well as theories on their purpose and origins, ranging from righteous Muslims who believe they were inspired by God to pre-Islamic Arab to skeptical scientists, and pretty much everything in between. It also looks at how Arab (and Jewish) Hunters view the different Creeds using Arabic and kabbalistic terms. Very nice for the setting.

In the next chapter, we are given some information on the Thalmudites (walking dead), Amalikites (spirits), Adites (vampires) and Midianites (shapeshifters) after four civilizations destroyed by God. It also gives some advice on the Hunt, including advice for each of the three Virtues on how to use your advantages. The next chapter gives even more advice on working together with other Kiswah, as well as other useful things for working in a group, such as the effort to unify all Kiswah, and the issues of cultural, ethnic and religious difference. As the book points out, there is a great deal of diversity in the Middle East beyond Arabs; Persians, Kurds, Turks, Yezidis, Druze, Bahai and lots more too. In addition, special mention is made of women's roles in society.

Chapter five finally starts giving us useful out-of-character information. An examination of the differences in theme and setting is given, along with some character creation guidelines. There aren't "special rules" for creating Kiswah that differ from mainstream western Hunters. What is given, though, is information on how certain Abilities and Backgrounds are going to be different in a Middle Eastern setting, along with some information on Abilities or Backgrounds that are very likely and which ones should be restricted (like Firearms and Arsenal, due to heavy restrictions on guns in many countries). In addition, an alternative look at the Creeds and Virtues is given, one which draws upon Arabic and Islamic culture. These changes are merely cosmetic, but do help establish the setting much better than the western names. In addition, a handful of new Edges are presented. Theres also a couple new systems, one for Al Ha'it (True Faith basically) and one for the Middle Eastern version of the Word (which always appears in Arabic).

The book closes out with a nice little chapter of ST specific material. This chapter goes more into detail on the setting, the reasoning behind the Word being in Arabic, Al Ha'it and even the secret police of the Kiswah. It closes up with a look at the Jinn (generic term for monsters) and some Kiswah of note. But this chapter should definately be left to STs, if only for the enjoyment of the game. Overall, I found this to be a wonderful book. While I'm not a big fan of the title, it really does do a nice job removing alot of stereotypes about the Middle East. The book is steeped in Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern culture, and makes it possible for anyone to understand and appreciate the setting. I strongly recommend that Hunter: the Reckoning players and STs check out this book, if only for a change of pace and an exciting new location, and any others in the Year of the Scarab series.

                      5 out of 5 stars Very nice........2007-05-07

I tried the shortbread recepie yesterday and it came out delicious. I was impressed! My parents, who are big fans of shortbread, loved it. My mom (who also makes shortbread) said it was the perfect taste and sweetness. Best of all it was easy, quick, and the ingredients were simple. Can't wait to try all the other recepies! (They also look easy enough).

5 out of 5 stars Anne's Saucy Chicken is divine!.......2006-03-27

I received this cookbook a long time ago, when I was a little girl and could not cook. This book gave me the confidence to prepare delicious dishes, like Anne's saucy chicken and Mrs. Irving's Shortbread. The first dinner that I cooked for my boyfriend (now he is my husband) was Anne's saucy chicken. He was so impressed that he thought I was a chef or something. What he did not know was that was the only recipe I knew! Since then, I have expanded my horizons, but I will treasure this cookbook forever.

PS: My husband and I went to Prince Edward Island for our honeymoon, so my love for "Anne" definitely determined our destination!

                      5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2003-08-27

This book is amazing! The recipes are easy to follow and absolutely delicious :) I had to do a project for Home Ec. in which I planned and cooked a 4 course meal, then had people evaluate it, I used only recipes from this cookbook and it was fabulous. I would definately recommend this book to anyone. The illustrations add a wonderful touch to this masterpiece.

                      P.S. I got 96% on my project :)

                      4 out of 5 stars Good Gift.......2001-06-19

I gave this book to a friend (25 yrs old at the time) and she loves it. We are both huge Anne Shirley fans and actually L.M. Montgomery fans too. This is a very sweet book that provides you with memories of some of Anne's memorable moments and adventures.

4 out of 5 stars For the True Anne Lover.......2001-05-19

I bought this book for a friend, but before I gave it to her I poured over it. It is adorable and a great book for True Anne Lovers... and not just for kids! I made the raspberry cordial and it is simply delicous. This book brings back memories of Anne's adventures and important events in her life. You will enjoy this book if you are an Anne fan or if you are a cook... you will LOVE this book if you are an Anne fan AND a cook!

Simple hand-worked embroidery, naturally colored fabrics, and several cross-craft techniques combine to create 12 striking projects with 20 elegant and contemporary designs. The embroidery projects, each presented with step-by-step instructions and color illustrations, include an embellished linen heart, a drawn-threadwork throw, an embroidered tote bag, a pair of lace-edged slippers, a beaded evening bag, a beaded choker, a glamorous quilted gauze pillow, and a beaded patchwork picture frame. Information on basic embroidery techniques, choosing fabrics and equipment, and resizing and transferring designs is also provided.

2 out of 5 stars I expect better from Interweave.......2005-04-02

Simple is definitely the word to describe this book. The photography is gorgeous and the pictures take up most of the space. But the projects are contrived and poorly explained for beginners. A mix of retro hippie/today's young hip designs. There isn't one project that interests me nor is there any inspiration to be taken from these designs. I expect better books from Interweave Press. This one is a disappointment. I gave the same review for Color on Color by the same author.

                                  Book Description

Over seventy percent of Americans cannot afford to own a code-enforced, contractor-built home. This has led to widespread interest in using natural materials -- straw, cob, and earth -- for building homes and other buildings that are inexpensive, and that rely largely on labor rather than expensive and often environmentally-damaging outsourced materials.

Earthbag Building is the first comprehensive guide to all the tools, tricks, and techniques for building with bags filled with earth - or earthbags. Having been introduced to sandbag construction by the renowned Nader Khalili in 1993, the authors developed this "Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique" over the last decade. A reliable method for constructing homes, outbuildings, garden walls and much more, this enduring, tree-free architecture can also be used to create arched and domed structures of great beauty -- in any region, and at home, in developing countries, or in emergency relief work.

This profusely illustrated guide first discusses the many merits of earthbag construction, and then leads the reader through the key elements of an earthbag building:

With dedicated sections on costs, making your own specialized tools, and building code considerations, as well as a complete resources guide, Earthbag Building is the long-awaited, definitive guide to this uniquely pleasing construction style.

Earthbag building, a method developped by Nader Khalili, is a wonderful innovation in building. It means that a building be built from materials found on site, even if those materials are too poor for rammed earth or mud brick. I've already used the techniques in this book to detail two public buildings! The trick is now to convince the structural engineer and councils...

What a great book! The authors show, step by step, exactly how to make an earthbag building, from dirt to plastered structure. The wall system described here in is neat, precise, clean, durable and strong. This book is the best book on the subject, and the authors write with humour and an obvious love of their craft.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong.......2006-09-03

Can't go wrong with any of these annuals. It won't really teach you design, but it will certainly be inspiring to look through these books.
