Book Description

Book Description
Everybody agrees that talented mom Patty Birch is the perfect president to lead the Carlton Central School PTA to new accomplishments. Under her steady stewardship, the organization verges on winning a prestigious award. Her skills, however, are sorely tested when angry board members assemble to discuss a secret video that reveals their pettiness and ineptitude. Not long after the meeting adjourns, Patty’s tenure is cut short by a knife-wielding killer.
When Molly Masters, the town’s unofficial sleuth, gets on the case, Perfect Patty turns out to be not so perfect after all. She not only instigated the notorious video but also some of its most humiliating episodes, many of which remain on the cutting-room floor. It’s no wonder someone in PTA-land is ready to kill—and Molly is destined to be the next victim. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Sounds like my family.......2003-03-15
The latest installment in the Molly Masters series is charming and full of family moments that ring true to life. The mystery itself, which centers around the death of the seemingly perfect PTA president, is typical of the genre. Although entertaining enough, it certainly didn't overwhelm my imagination. Molly's encounters with her family, however, were brilliant. Her exchanges with her 16-year old daughter Karen, who is learning to drive and beginning to date, were a wonderful mixture of humor and angst. Even more touching was her discussion with her son, Nathan, who is being harassed by bullies at school. Overall, I definitely recommend this book to readers of the series!
Getting Silly.......2003-01-05
This once charming series is starting to lose its steam.
Molly has turned into nothing more than a nosy, annoying pain in the .... She sticks her nose into situations that have nothing to do with her, and doesn't seem to think the police can manage to do their jobs withour her "tactful nudging" in the right direction. The fact that Tommy allows her to keep intruding into his investigations is just getting silly already -- almost as silly as her constantly teaming up with Stephanie and taking her orders, when she can't stand this woman.
It's time to put this series to bed before it turns to plain God-awful.

Hmm...Peyote Suppositories and LSD for Babies? Like Far Out? Like OH NO!.......2006-04-24
Here, presented in a gentle Earth mother (or stoned-out hippie?) tone, is a lot of interesting information about self-medicating with herbs, especially as related to sexual, pregnancy and birth issues.
However, am I the only one bothered because the author not only promotes combining sexual activity and psychedelic drug use, but specifically suggests that some pregnant mothers-to-be consider ingesting LSD so they can "trip out" with their fetuses?
Here is the author's quote about LSD from page 81, part of the same paragraph where she writes about the difficulties of "planning those orgiastic trips at infertile times of one's cycle":
"If you feel comfortable making the decision to trip with your baby (baby getting a magnified dose due to her tinier body weight or mass), then make an informed decision. Refer to science, your own experience, and information coming from any channel. LSD is magnificent and for a fetus, it must be ultra-magnificent-but is it dangerous?"
The author never answers her question about the dangers ofpsychedelicizing a fetus, the implication being that women should trust their "feelings" on the matter (with no indication if it matters if you are stoned or straight while tuning into those "feelings.")
I'm not square, (to answer Jimi Hendrix's famous question, yes, I am experienced) and you can blame it on me being male, but first off, never mind it being illegal, LSD is not an herb, and second, isn't it a little irresponsible to suggest to young, pregnant mothers that it might be a "magnificent" idea to dose their fetuses with hallucinogenic street drugs?
On the very next page the author writes about peyote suppositories and women inserting slices of the hallucinogenic cactus "high in their vaginas like a cervical cap." If such things are appealing to you, hey, far out. But can we leave the children and fetuses out of it, please. Thank you.
And what exactly is the purpose of including, on page 12, a full-page close-up photograph of the abdomen and bare genitalia of a prepubescent girl?

Manual for truly living in the Feminine.......2003-01-30
I first received this book as a gift in the early 80's from a wonderful free spirit living on the beach. I was so attracted to this wild woman who seemed to be the exact opposite of all that culture expected me to be. I remember sitting in the beach over several days reading it cover to cover... it was as if I was spending my days with an old friend. I could feel something within my deepest being becoming awake, aware... My intuition told me to hold fast to my copy which I read many times over the years. I fell in love with being a woman and having the power to control my own health, energy and vitality. Visually, this is a stunning book with artwork and graphics, borders and creative usage of fonts that make the reader feel as though she has stumbled upon a written treasure, secret knowledge gathered over the course of hundreds of years - passed down for hundreds more. I have used herbs my entire life and I've come to realize that herbs are not to be used for specific "treatments" but rather for whole living.
Much more than just a herbal guide, this books shows how to tap into the strength, intuitive wisdom, self-mastery, and sheer life force of every woman and it provides the key to self-knowledge and wholeness. I feel this book is very intimately written and that it truly speaks to a woman's soul, awakening her own inner healing spirit. So many women I have given this book over the years have thanked me time and again for giving them the book that changed the course of their lives. Jeannine Parvati-Baker is truly a Goddess of our time. Her life's work has been a testament to preserving all that IS our birthright as women, the power to heal - our bodies, our families, our planet. She is a feminist in the truest sense of the word and allows us to be strong in our woman power without tearing down the power of our male partners...
This is truly a profound, powerful, and moving book which provides hope for celebration as we turn to embrace a lost aspect of ourselves.... A MUST for every woman and the men who long to know her.
Fills a void on herbal healing...........2002-11-23
When HYGIEIA-A WOMAN'S HERBAL by Jeannine Parvati was first published in July 1978, it filled a void. Much of what she had to say needed to be said. If you're interested in historical artifacts (how dumb we were), this book is a good read. I believe much of Parvati's text will interest most contemporary women-at least women who have difficult questions and want to know more about the female body. Two decades ago, many of us fit that description as most medical research was conducted with male subjects. Most of what affected the female body was not discussed in public or even in books. In spite of their notoriety, Master's and Johnson didn't cover this stuff and I doubt Dr. Ruth did either. Imagine your deepest secrets about your body, those things you might not be able to discuss with your best girl friend without difficulty. Well, Parvati is the girlfriend you never had.
Much of Parvati's material is geared to younger woman-probably because she was younger when she wrote the book and authors tend to write about their experience, but she does have some good stuff on menopause. Given the outpouring of books on the topic of herbal healing in recent years, you might wonder what this book covers not found in other herbal volumes, and the answer is plenty. Parvati's book is about herb uses and the reproductive organs of the female body. Parvati organizes the herbs by topics, covering subjects such as aphrodisiacs to whet the sexual appetite, as well as herbs to improve fertility, assist with birth control, boost lactation, ease menstruation, et cetera. She has lots of graphic illustrations and pictures (naked bodies) and discusses herbal applications you probably won't find discussed anywhere else.
Parvati is Native American with a few other good qualities thrown in such as six children conceived and delivered a la natural. This is a book for liberated women (and men) or those who want to be.
Hygieia: A Woman's Herbal.......2002-09-10
If I could turn back time, I would have read this book in my pre-teens. Then my forties would be much simpler had I been living in harmony with my body all of these years. Jeannine has something for everyone, no matter what your age, it's never too late or too soon to begin taking care of yourself in the most natural way possible. Her intuitive finesse combined with her extensive experience as an herbalist and midwife is very comforting and respectfully given to the reader. Her delightful wit along with her indisputable wisdom uses time-tested ancient tools to create realistic ways to celebrate ALL the phases of being a woman. She wakes us up to possibilites we may never have found on our own regarding contraception, pregnancy, childbirth, sterilty, birth control and even aphrodisiacs! Her insight to these matters is often surprisingly simple and spiritually sane as she tells us that "good gynecological health is contingent upon general good health". I especially appreciate the knowledge shared by the Native American traditions to well-woman care. Thank you, Jeanine for being "lovingly real" and oh, so spontaneous in your delivery of this precious and beautiful book!
Goddesses, empower yourselves!.......2002-09-06
I remember when I first saw Hygieia. I was in an old rootsy health food store and I think there was some really groovy music playing on the stereo. My partner was taking a long time to pick out fruit and so I wandered into the "holistic health for women" section of the bookstand. I was immediatedly attracted to the cover of Jeannine Parvati Baker's herbal and as I flipped through it, I knew I had to have it....the beauty upon each page in art and in word resonated deep in an inner place within my soul and I felt I needed to sit many hours by the fireside and absorb the wisdom of this incredibly feminine herbal. Now that I have a copy of Hygeiea, I carry it with me on long journeys and I reference it often. I enjoy the fresh perspective on feminism ....I appreciate Jeannine's efforts to empower women to take care of our reproductive health in a way that is connecteed to Earth wisdom and sages of old. Jeannine Parvati Baker, in her book Hygieia, encourages women of all ages to fully embrace each cycle of womanhood from puberty to motherhood to menopause and beyond in a beautiful way. Truly the book Hygieia is a rare gem, a true blessing to the aspiring wise woman(or man!!)
Book Description
Oz Clarke's perennial bestseller The Essential Wine Book is one of the most original and diverting wine volumes ever published. Now this conversational encyclopedia of wine, which provides complete coverage of all wine regions of the world, has been revised, updated, and expanded to reflect the latest changes in the fast-developing world of wine.
Clarke's extraordinary wine-tasting talents and eloquence combine in this beautifully illustrated book to produce a resource for every wine lover, whether a newcomer or a longtime aficionado. With his trademark combination of hard facts and breezy practical advice, Clarke outlines what makes each wine work -- what it tastes like, why it's different from its neighbors, and most important, whether it is worth seeking out.
Each chapter covers a different wine-producing region of the world and includes:
- A lively introduction to the region, with useful maps
and a full description of grape varieties cultivated and
wine styles produced
- Evocative descriptions of the taste of the region's wines,
explanations of how to read the local wine labels,
evaluations of recent vintages, and recommendations
for enjoying these wines with food
- Vintage ratings and tasting notes, along with useful summaries of the value-for-money and availability of specific wine styles
Customer Reviews:
best beginner wine book period.......2007-08-30
This was my class text 12 years ago and is still the best beginners book on wine. It covers all the basics with no fluff. Read it twice, once before a vineyard tour and/or wine class and once after. Cheers!
Good, but superceeded (obsolete).......2007-08-20
It's hard to think of a book re-printed as recently as 1997 (3rd edition in this case, which is the one I have at home) as being BADLY out of date, but when it comes to wine, that's par for the course.
Oz Clarke is one of the better, and less corrupt, wine writers out there, and I've enjoyed what few of his books I've read thus far.
Anyway, this book is one of his earlier offerings. Other books he's published since have rendered this obsolete (not that I was very surprised), and I have no doubt that it will soon drop out of print entirely.
It's a good book, but Clarke focused a tad too much on specific vineyards and vintages. His more recent books (those appearing on Amazon anyway) appear to have shifted emphasis to grapes and regions (a wise decision, IMNSHO). He still covers vineyards and vintages, though, and as time goes by those newer books will become dated in turn as a result ... as all books on wine invariably do.
BOTTOM LINE: Although it's a good book, it's been superceeded by more recent offerings by the same author, and is about to go out of print. Save your money.
Get this book........1999-09-03
This is about the best wine book I've browsed through and possess. While other books out there speak to a true expert or the wine lover who feels above the crowd, Oz Clarke speaks to everyone. Expert and novice alike. The info is pretty complete for such a small book. He gives the essentials but leaves room for you to research further if you so choose. He takes the mystery out of it and can get anyone to walk into a wine store and actually understand what the heck's going on.
Good overview for wine fanciers.......1998-04-24
Less encyclopedic than some of Hugh Johnson's or Frank Schoonmaker's books, this is still a good basic guide to wines of the world. It includes sections on choosing wine (the characteristics of different varieties and styles of wine), buying and storing wine, serving wine, vineyard and winery techniques, a glossary and a vintage guide. The essence of the book is the regional description of wines. The color photos of vine- yards are often smaller than I would like, but they do add something to the attraction of the book as do the wine label photos. Having lived for a number of years in Germany, I was disappointed to find some of my favorite wines missing from the book (i.e., Ockfener Bockstein from the Saar region)or Urziger Schwarzlay (hope I'm spelling that correctly) and Urziger Wurzgarten from the Mosel. However, some would be difficult to find in most American cities. He does a better job detailing French wines and does put in a good word for the Scheurebe grape (a crossing of varieties that produces some lovely German wines). He also brings the reader up to date on replantings in Napa Valley, California and other locales where vintners are still deciding on the best variety of grape for a specific site. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to someone learning about wines, but it would be supplemented by one or more of Hugh Johnson's books and books specifically on US wines and German wines.
A short cut into the wine world.......1998-02-19
This book achieves a lot in its small but well printed and organized volume. Almost in each wine region, Oz hits the right spot in relating the geography, climate, soil, vintages and grapes to the vividly discribed wine taste. It enables beginners start to enjoy the pleasure of selecting, tasting and drinking wine without paying much tuitions.
Book Description
The Fairbairn-Sykes dagger is recognised as the most important fighting knife in history. Special forces units during World War II had such faith in it that they kept it ready whenever silent killing was called for. Now this knife and its descendants are detailed in one comprehensive, heavily illustrated reference.
Customer Reviews:
Money well spent........2000-11-02
I have really struggled to obtain collectors information on the FS commando knife for a while now, this book seemed to be the answer. How wrong I was, this reference book IS the answer. Identification of various knives is a breeze, and I have been able to ID 2 (same) of mine that had I had no idea what thier origin was. I have one though that I cannot match though. In my opinion this was money well spent.

absolutely amazing.......2007-06-13
This is an amazing book! While most people may not be able to re-create these parties, you can definitely get ideas from all of them. Take the ideas here and apply them to one or two tables or a small area. The pictures are wonderful and I am amazed at what is done in some of these parties. Would love to have a chance just to walk through one of these!!!!
Very Inspiring.......2007-01-11
I love this book. The themes and pictures are great. It's more for the higher end weddings
Entertaining with a flair.......2006-11-30
Subtitled: Inspiration for Creating the Party of Your Dreams
Worried about the upcoming holiday party you have to plan? You (and all your friends) know what Martha would do but it's time to shake things up. The problem is you aren't sure where to start.
Luckily for you, Inspirations by Preston Bailey is available. Preston Bailey is a well-known event planner for Hollywood stars. Recently, he's worked on Oprah's fiftieth birthday celebration and Donald and Melania's wedding celebration.
Ten parties, eight of which are weddings, are photographed and discussed in this book. Locations include Niagra Falls, a Virginia stable that is converted into a wedding chapel and the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each chapter celebrates a different theme. Yes, there are eight weddings covered but each wedding has its own theme, color scheme and something unique to offer. The last chapter provides ways to organize and showcase your dining table.
This book dazzles with its full-size color photographs. It celebrates colors, flowers and the unexpected. Reading this book was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon as there are a lot of things to ooh and aah over. Two of my favorite are pineapples made out of sunflowers and a dog made out of dogwood flowers.
Bailey's philosophy is you aren't just throwing a party, you are creating a theatrical event for your guests. It's important to pay attention to the details so your guests will know they are in for a wonderful, magical night. Some examples of small but important details that Bailey uses are: a wedding menu made out of edible chocolate, displaying sculptures that support the party's theme and embellishing cloth napkins with silk roses.
This book is not a "how to" because there aren't any step-by-step instructions. Rather, it's designed to be a "how about this idea" book. It's a peek into Bailey's creative process.
Bailey finds inspiration in nature, artwork and the various cities he has visited. He doesn't want you to simply copy his ideas but he wants you to use this book as a springboard for your imagination and personal style.
Armchair Interview says feeling ambitious and daring? Incorporate Bailey's suggestions into your celebrations.
Very Inspiring.......2006-07-17
This book is certainly not a how to book. It is most definately a coffee table book showing off the talents of Mr. Bailey & his design team.
They are very good at what they do.
I use this book as my design inspirational bible and have produced some great, one of a kind arrangements for weddings and parties.
It is a pity that the author decided against sharing his knowledge. This book could have been a great best seller had he offered up some basic design techniques.
Though I love the book, everytime I thumb through it, I ask myself - who was the intended audience?

Book Description
He was a skid row derelict of the lowest order, a vanilla-guzzling, pill-popping, bed-wetting alcoholic bum. It wasn't just his life; it was his calling. He prowled the meanest streets of Vancouver, stalking a bottle of vodka like a lion stalks a zebra. When he finally hit bottom, he hit it with a raging intensity that most people can't even imagine, much less survive. Then, having reached Hell, he turned around and climbed out.
Bottlehopper is the memoir of Bob Edwards, who embraced alcoholism only to reject it and go on to become a wealthy, successful businessman. Warm, tender, and tragic, Bottlehopper is filled with the pain of setbacks, the joy of victory, unexpected humor, surprising sources of help, and tales of friends who failed to escape their own nightmares. It is an inspiring story that stresses success over failure, hope over despair.
