How come 4 years to write a sequel. War and Peace this is not!.......2007-09-12
This book was ok but not as good as Rollins for example. Considering the fact that it is not exactly a "Classic" by any means, how come it takes 4 - 5 years for the sequel to be written. Come on a monkey could write faster than this!
Should have studied more..........2007-05-02
A plot which could have been interesting, if well developed and documented. What annoyed me mostly was the sillines of the errors, which could have been cured with a visit to Wiki or Google.
The USS Constellation was never a nuclear propelled ship, and had been retired in 2003, before the book was published.
The father of the main character feathers two of the four props of his C-141. Too bad the C-141 is a jet airplane, with no propellers to be feathered.
The Black Hawk is so called by the US Army and Air Force, the Navy call it a Sea Hawk or Ocean Hawk.
I will not comment on the eco-silliness...
Again, a good plot wasted.
A quick read, but there's some unexplored territory remaining in this genre..........2007-04-02
Greanias' Raising Atlantis started out life as an e-book, and it's easy to see why. He has an interesting topic, makes the reading informative but quick, and wraps things up quickly, and finished with a hint of a sequel. Because of the e-book connection, though, a few things don't get fleshed out as much as they could, although I think that the two lead characters were handled reasonably well.
A worthwhile read, with the hope that Greanias' sequel is published as a more traditional novel, with a bit more depth.
Corny.......2007-03-09
Imagine sitting down for a steak dinner with the first few bites being filet mignon. Then imagine your surprise as the last half turns into rump roast. You'll have experienced Raising Atlantis. It's almost as if two different people wrote this book.
In a nutshell, a mysterious artifact is unearthed in the Antarctic. An artifact that could have been built over 12 thousand years ago and may be the site of the legendary Atlantis. The cast of characters include:
Conrad Yeats an archeologist who has a love/hate relationship with his father.
General Yeats, surrogate father to Conrad and failed Mars-mission astronaut.
Sister Serghetti, excuse me, DOCTOR Serghetti (you'll understand if you read the book), an ex-nun and current defender of the planet, dubbed Mother Earth.
These three individuals come together to discover the secret of the artifact and set in motion an apocalyptic event that could destroy mankind.
What started out as a promising story with intriguing characters somehow devolved into inane dialog with thoroughly unlikable protagonists who, despite having PHDs, speak with all the eloquence and maturity of a circle of petulant valley girls. And then there are plot devices that fall completely and utterly flat...e.g. when Yeats tells Conrad where he *really* comes from, it was met with what amounted to, "Huh, no kidding." It truly is amazing that an author can write a story without one likeable or sympathetic character.
And the storyline just got sillier and sillier. Any kind of tension seemed forced and artificial. Conrad's and Serghetti's romantic backstory was trite.
I give it two stars because I finished it but it was like waiting in a long line for a ride at an amusement park, knowing that the ride isn't worth the wait, but not wanting to have totally wasted the time you've already spent there.
Quite possibly the worst book I ever almost read..........2007-02-06
I almost never quit reading a book before the end, but when I got halfway through this one and General Yeats admitted to his son Conrad, "I found you in a capsule buried in the ice..." I had enough. I can suspend disbelief as well as anyone when it comes to a good story, but this one just had too many convenient and fortunate coincidences. Reminds me of a story told by a twelve-year old who makes it up as she goes along. Don't waste your money.

Book Description
CODE 61: maintain radio silence. someone may be listening.
Investigating the apparent suicide of a colleague’s niece, Iowa Deputy Sheriff Carl Houseman is startled to uncover a group that transforms the dark fantasies of vampire legend into grisly reality: they ritualistically drink small amounts of one another’s blood. As Carl is drawn deeper into this unnerving world, it becomes clear that the dead woman may have been the victim of a twenty-first-century Dracula.
The prime suspect, Dan Peale, is a sinister presence within the group--a man some say drinks blood and never, ever dies. It’s an outlandish, heinous theory, but then suspicions are bolstered by rumors of a card-carrying vampire hunter who is also pursuing Peale. All too soon, Houseman finds himself scrambling to track a vampire--before he kills again.

With his dead-on depictions of the rural crime beat in such critically acclaimed novels as Eleven Days, Known Dead, and The Big Thaw, Donald Harstad proved himself to be a master of the police procedural and a keen observer of the intrigues and eccentricities of the American heartland. In Code Sixty-One, Harstad furthers his talents, bringing his offbeat, Fargoesque style to a gripping tale about modern-day vampires.
Investigating the apparent suicide of a colleague's niece, Iowa Deputy Sheriff Carl Houseman uncovers a group that has transformed the dark fantasies of vampire legend into grisly reality: they ritualistically drink small amounts of one another's blood. As Houseman and his partner, Hester Gorse, are drawn deeper into this alternate, alien world, they come to the chilling conclusion that the dead young woman may have been the victim of a twenty-first-century Dracula. Their prime suspect, Dan Peal, is a sinister and commanding presence within the group, but without proof to substantiate such a heinous theory, the trail is in danger of running cold. When their suspicions are bolstered by the report of a card-carrying vampire-hunter who is also pursuing Peal, Houseman and Gorse suddenly find themselves scrambling to track the vampire before he kills again.
A spellbinding journey into the dark recesses of the modern-day heartland, Code Sixty-One unfolds with relentless speed and precision. Veteran police officer and author Donald Harstad continues to craft his work from the fabric of personal experience and insider know-how, cutting to the quick of well-imagined fiction, rattling nerves along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Unexpectedly scary mystery.......2006-10-21
I have been a reader of the Detective Houseman series since I discovered "11 Days" in 1999. I love the regular characters and the description of life in a smaller town (versus Los Angeles). Mr. Harstad has a great gift for writing truly page turning and in this book scary moments which caused me to turn on some lights while reading late into the night.
This is a muder mystery with what seems like a supernatural twist. I love that his characters are finally just people who are not the over the top creations of a Jeffery Deever (has it's place and time in entertainment). I look forward to each new novel as a visit with old friends (Carl. Sally, Lamar et al.)
Harstad - The Real Thing.......2005-01-30
I am a retired police officer, having served for over 33 years in large and small jurisdictions. I was surprised when I began Harstad's book. I thought to myself: " This guy is one of us or sure has a great insight". While the story is fanciful, it was very well written and "gripping" throughout. I paid close attention to the language, the actions, the thought processes, the insertion of humor (sometimes of the 'graveyard-type) and case development. All these things were right on the money. I have and will recommend Harstad's books to other officers - active and retired. I also recommend his books to you if you are interested in both a well written, interesting tale as well as a peek into how "cops" think and act. Both thumbs up!!
Low-key mystery is still fun.......2004-07-25
Donald Harstad writes books in the first person, with alter ego Carl Houseman narrating the story that he's involved in. The result is a book that sounds like it was written by a veteran of Iowa law enforcement, which is of course what Harstad is. This is an interesting technique: there's no attempt at beautiful prose (James Lee Burke comes to mind) but rather a mundane as-it-happened reportorial style that's authentic feeling. Sort of like a hand-held camera in a movie during a chase scene...you think you're actually there, or hearing about it from someone who was.
In this installment, Houseman is first called to an apartment building where a very strange peeping tom is making trouble, then begins to investigate a strange killing in an even stranger house in Nation County. The killer at least appears to be a vampire, or he thinks he's one anyway, and several other participants believe he is also. This leads to much humor, dark and otherwise, and to several interesting plot twists.
Harstad's weak point, if there is one, is that his plots sort of meander at points, and this one does that halfway through the book. Things get bogged down in his mundane recountings of radio conversations (which he creates using the "ten" codes that they actually use on the radio in Iowa) and various procedural things that go on around a homicide. At times it can get excruciating waiting for something to happen, but the characters are interesting and the dialog's good.
I enjoyed this book in spite of the shortcomings listed above, and would recommend it.
Better than I expected.......2003-12-16
"Code 61" by Donald Harstad will startle your senses and stretch your imagination, an unbelievable tale of the heartland so well told you will believe every word. Deputy Sheriff Carl Houseman is summoned to a crime scene, a purported suicide and every aspect of the area surrounding the body screams deception. When a young woman reports that the peeping-tom at her window is very pale and has fangs, perplexed
officers can find no ledge for anyone to perch upon. Then the autopsy proves murder with startling information that involves the small town and surrounding area police officers on a "vampire" hunt.
Harstad's greatest writing talent is his ability to place his readers into the midst of a case and take them step by step through to its final conclusion. Once you have read one of Donald Harstad's novels you too will be a fan.

A most likeable cop.......2003-03-27
With the title it has, I would never have even picked up this book if my sister-in-law hadn't given it to me because it is set along the Mississippi like KEEPERS OF THE RIVER. Yes, it's a vampire story but don't expect a real one. Too bad. I think the story would have been more intriguing if the vampire turned out to be genuine, but I suppose the author didn't want to risk leaving the mystery genre. With the hope of finding a Midwestern Dracula, I waded into a maze of technical police stuff but was carried along by amusing dialogue and a most likeable cop, Carl Houseman. He is an unique and engaging character. Unfortunately, the others are not so readily pictured and the ending was rather anticlimatic.

Very good story, with good character development and a mystery that makes sense and pulls you in. The first one was a bit disappointing, but it is crucial for you to understand this one at all. This story will certainly make you want to read the rest of them. Have fun.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best books..........2006-09-20
To be honest, I had my doubts about buying a book of patterns without any examples whatsoever. However, I do not regret it, because this is one of the most beautiful and fantastic books on cross stitch I have ever owned. Each pattern consists of 3 or more colors and are clearly charted in color. There are different themes on each chapter (fantasy, oriental, magic etc.). Some of them are quite hard to do, but there are plenty of smaller projects which I am thankful for. I do have to add that a lot of the patterns use quarter stitching, which can get on my nerves after a while. Either way, I think it is a high quality five star book.
Nice Book.......2005-03-29
This is a nice book. I like Teresa Wentzler designs and decided to get this on a whim. I'm not disappointed. The designs are not too bad. The dragons are beautiful. I'm not thrilled with the mermaids and the nautical themes, but the rest of the book is nice.
A fantastic book for your cross-stitch library.......2003-01-10
This is a fantastic book for cross-stitch addicts! The book is full of charts for everything from wizards and unicorns to oriental dragons and zodiac motifs.
The charts are divided into 6 main categories: Myth & Magic, Winter Enchantment, Oriental Fantasy, Angelic Messengers, The Mystic Deep and Celestial Heaven. Within these categories there are charts for complex, intricate, time-consuming masterpieces, as well as for smaller motifs. While the complex charts are more suited to an experienced stitcher, many of the motifs are very easily done by the beginner stitcher.
The directions for working the charts are clear and concise. The charts themselves are in color, which some stitchers may not like. However, the designs themselves make-up for whatever lack this may cause. They also give the name of the designers of the charts, which is an added bonus in case you find yourself wishing to do more charts by that designer.
This is one book that I will buy and treasure for a long time to come!

Excellent.......2007-02-19
I have really enjoyed this book. The colorful pictures are gorgeous! With help from this book I have created more space in my home. I have been able to store the items I use most in a way that looks beautiful and I have easy access to those items. The books also look great displayed in my living room! My company frequently asks if they can take a look at the book!
really liked this book!.......2007-01-31
good ideas for storage and disply for every room, had ideas i had not thought of.
Beautiful Photos - an inspirational book.......2005-07-05
I love looking at the Pottery Barn Catalog, both for the furniture and the style/inspiration that comes along with it.
This book is an extension of the catalog (some pictures are exactly from the catalog) but it adds interesting highlights, helps with color choices (such as suggesting paint chips) and gives expert tips at organizating (I found the best ones to be for closets and the laundry room.)
Obviously they promote their merchandise, but who wouldn't? It is absolutely gorgeous!
Overall, a good read with beautiful photos and interesting tidbits.
A knavish speech sleeps in a foolish ear.......2004-10-29
"All it does is tell you to buy the stuff at Pottery Barn and how to use it - like we don't already know how to use a bookcase?? Don't waste your money."
Well that's all well and fine if you're the Candice Olsen of stylish living. I know how to use a bookcase but how to arrange a variety of items on one that is both practical and visually appealing is more the mystery. I have a eclectic movie memorabilia collection as well as many dvds, cds and books. This book showed me how I could create a media enviroment to store and display my collection while keeping it organized and simple. The book also provides good and basic advice on layering textures and using colour effectively.
So if you like the Pottery Barn style and haven't reached the title of domestic god or goddess then I do recommend this book and all titles in the Pottery Barn series. =)

Nick Bantock first burst onto the literary scene in 1991 with his remarkable illustrated novel Griffin & Sabine--which was as much art as it was artifice. While chronicling the correspondence between two mysterious lovers, Bantock peppered his book with visual delights--macabre post cards, intricately designed stamps, exquisite envelopes that open to disclose hand-written letters. Sabine's Notebook and The Golden Mean soon followed to complete the trilogy. In many respects, The Museum at Purgatory resembles its predecessors, mixing metaphysics and art in a way meant to both puzzle and delight its readers. The narrator offers the basic premise early on: "My name is Non, and as Curator of the Museum here at Purgatory I am required by statute to facilitate, without judgment, the progress of all collectors assigned to these halls. It is my responsibility to act as their souls' guardian, as well as preserver of their accumulated treasures." Non then goes on to give a brief overview of the layout of Purgatory, a city that "takes a meditative, non-partisan view of reality" and where visitors are "faced with fundamental questions of self-worth" that must be resolved before they can move on.
In other words, this stopping place between heaven and hell is one big analyst's couch. Non's introduction to Purgatory scans like the overly formal, academic language one finds on informational panels in natural history museums--no doubt Bantock's intention. Unfortunately, this can become wearing after a while, and it isn't until the second half of the book when Non tells his own story (as opposed to the histories of the various "collections" under his care) that the prose loosens up somewhat.
But it's the illustrations that make Bantock's books special; it's unfortunate that several of them look as if they've escaped from a Dorling Kindersley guidebook--photographs of objects on stark backgrounds with a caption explaining their significance or use. Yet this museum contains some lovely examples of its author's art. As always, his stamps and postcards are exquisite--and how many cards are postmarked Nirvana or bear stamps from Inferno? This book may not equal the mystery or sheer beauty of the Griffin & Sabine trilogy, but Nick Bantock fans will still find plenty to intrigue and amuse. --Alix Wilber

Not what I had hoped for.......2007-03-20
I have to say after all the great reviews on here, I expected more. I guess I prefer his more story form fiction to this which was more like a catalogue....but what's not for me is apparently for many others. :)
artistic pennance.......2007-01-02
Actually 3 1/2 stars.
Nick Bantock's Museum at Purgatory is an art concept book in which eclectic collections of drawings and found-art are tied together by a curious story line. The various collections are supposed to illustrate the eccentricities and struggles of dead souls. The concept is the same as Bantock's earlier Griffin & Sabine. But this larger book suffers from too much overblown prose and artwork that is mostly insipid. It's as if Bantock's back room had become cluttered with unused images, so he shipped everything off to Purgatory, hoping that they might benefit from our indulgence.
The museum at purgatory.......2005-07-20
One of the best books I read recently. Bantocks magic reigns free and ''artsy'' in a absolute brilliant way. The curator take us into a journey through the museum chambers, while we get to know the contributors & their lives and the curators own tragical history. Althought its a fantasy book it makes us wish that someday we end up on a ever changing place, where good and evil had finnaly reached equilibrium, to find out if we really made the best of our lives. Even if all passages through Purgatory are not so happy, Bantocks artpieces(spread all over the book) make it sure more stylish.
A personal mythology.......2004-05-03
Bantock has a wonderful style, and this book may be my favorite among the ones I've seen.
Like the Griffin and Sabine books, it has a definitely mystical side. As the name says, it's about purgatory, but not Dante's. This is a place where people have work to do, and our protagonist works as a museum keeper. That sets the scene for a series of peculiar vignettes, the kind that make just a little too much sense.
Also like G&S, there's a distinctly autobiographical sense about the story. The last section is explicitly a fictional autobiography. Somehow, though, the stories have a grounded feeling that doesn't let me believe they are pure fantasy.
As much as I like the G&S imagery, I like this better. Bantock has moved his improbable talent for assemblage and collage into 3D. He has created several series of fictional artifacts, are as complex and multifacted as his works on paper. These images, so many being photos, have a clarity that G&S sometimes lost.
This is a brief but very enjoyable book, and one worth re-reading. The pictures just get better with each reading, and the stories seem to stay fresh.
A book to relish..over and over again.......2003-01-15
This book was a most wonderful experience for me. With each turn of a page, my imagination was stroked. A nice little tome to keep at bedside, when you need just a few moments of fasination before sleep.

Customer Reviews:
Paris Hilton Dreams! .......2005-06-16
Who would have thought Paris Hilton was sensitive enough to dream? This is the beauty of the book. It is filled with the dreams of celebrities from Madonna to Sophia Loren to Kurt Vonnegut, and yes, Paris Hilton! While the interpretations are terse and insightful it seems Lawrence is softer on the celebs than she is on stock traders in her column in Trader Monthly. She kills them ... but always with humor. All in all the book is a must read.
LIVING DREAMS.......2005-06-16
Lawrence shows us the interior life of stars. This is a first. Usually stars hide behind personnas. Lawrence lifts these veils and gets at the inner core of the stars dream lives. Particularly liked Paris Hilton before she became Paris Hilton.
Top book of the century.......2005-06-15
I was amazed at how well this book was put together. I loved the analysis on the different people. You learn so much from this book, like information you could never find out. When you buy this book you will rate this book 5 stars just like me, because you we'll see how good it was.
fun and fulfilling.......2005-06-11
Reading the various dream iterpretations that Lauren Lawrence writes about introduced me to an entirely new level of personal understanding. While I enjoyed reading the dreams of "celebrities", what I really found enlightening is how I was able to relate to some of the fears, desires and hopes expressed by these dreams. Some of my dreams have been very similar to those she has written about. In addition to finding the interpretations interesting, I was able to learn about myself and see the similarites between us all. I really enjoyed this book.
An Underwater exploration of the celebrity mind..........2004-12-25
Lauren Lawrence has, unquestionably, unearthed the Archimedean point in the depths of the unconscious, which exists in that continuum of space/time we call "life." Her Assouline book, "Private Dreams of Public People," is a masterpiece of hermeneutical insight into the workings of the symbolic mind! The mental drapes are pulled, the personality revealed... Notwithstanding the book's elegant picturesque form, it is the deconstructive, analytical content of its author that bears the mark of genius. Julie Delpy dreams of kittens in teacups, Andy Warhol dreams of his obsession. Gore Vidal dreams he's at a loss of words, while Madonna dreamt the loss of her baby. These dreams, from the surrealistic to the prophetic, are the same dreams we all have from Shakespeare to Kennedy, when we sleep perchance to dream! Lauren Lawrence's contribution to the study of dreams is immense. This is a must read. She is a pioneer, not unlike jaques Cousteau, an underwater explorer of that deep, vast ocean, we call, the unconscious.
