Miss Cozy Brown, proprietor of a bookstore that specializes in rare and hard-to-find African American titles, goes to sleep one night knowing that something magical is about to happen. She finds herself drawn again to the yellowed manuscript that her grandmother bequeathed to her, Children of Grace, a slave narrative by a woman healer who died long before abolition. Despite its unsparing accounts of cruelty and abuse, hope shimmers from its pages, and the book can only be described as a love story with prophetic overtones, much like Redemption Song. It closes with the promise that slavery will end--the author of the manuscript, Iona, reads the future in the stars--but that true freedom will only come later. The next morning, as Miss Cozy suspected, two strangers are waiting for Black Images to open. They both need a special book, something life-transforming, and their hands fall at the same time on Children of Grace. Miss Cozy glances up as the couple approaches the counter. She "watched these two, as she'd watched so many others. She knew that they had no idea how their lives were going to be affected. Other folks had come to her shop thinking that they had been led to the bookstore because of their own intuition. But she knew better. This was her purpose, her calling: to help others unfold the chapters of their lives by reading between someone else's lines."

Some of what happens to Fina and Ross when Miss Cozy takes them under her wing will not surprise readers. But as they leaf through Children of Grace together, drawing strength from the story, they uncover Iona's "Recipe of Life," with its powerful and remarkably personal message. In her fictional debut, Bertice Berry has written a modern-day fairy tale and a hymn of praise to literature's redemptive power. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Owner of a small African-American bookshop, Miss Cozy has an unique gift: Customers who walk through her door rarely leave without a book that speaks directly to their life. But when Josephine--"Fina"--and Ross arrive in search of an obscure, unpublished manuscript written by a slave woman, Miss Cozy knows that all her visions have been leading her to this magical day.

Yet Miss Cozy has no intention of selling the manuscript--no matter the price. So she offers Fina and Ross an alternative. They can read it together at the store. It was not what they hoped for, but their interest in the extraordinary love story is about as strong as their uncanny attraction for one another . . . one they both sense runs much deeper than a kiss. In the course of a few days, Fina and Ross realize that this powerful book has special meaning for the two of them--and that the path to their shared future may be linked to something that happened more than a century ago. . . .

Hooked I was from beginning to end. Redemption Song captivated all my senses. Bertice Berry is some writer. She has a vivid imagination and knows how to include the historical and present times. Redemption Song bought tears and laughter. The end came much to soon. The book is one of the best I've read in a long time. Most definitely is going to be a part of my personal library.

Highly recommend this book and hope Bertice Berry will be on the literary circuit for a long time.

Fina had a thing for trying on her boyfriend's shirts, she could make them look like her own even if it was a little bit big or small. Whenever one of her boyfriends would see her in their shirt they would have one of two reactions; they would either demand that she take their shirt off and storm out, or they would try to take advantage of her fit body. Fina always figured that she would find a shirt that fit just right she would have found the one she would spend the rest of her life. Ross was an established anthropologist, he had been very successful in his lifetime but through a series of events he was lead to take up a new project which concerned a book titled Children of Grace. The book was about two slave lovers. The girl, Iona, was raped by their owner's son and then mothered his child. Her father went crazy and killed their owner after realizing that not only had he his son raped his daughter, he had expected her to love him too. Joe, Iona's lover, was enraged at this fact but did nothing so he could stay with the one he was in love with, Iona. Fina and Ross had both been searching for the book and both had decided to look at the same store on the same day at the same time when they met. After being acquainted with each other, Ross, Fina, and Ms. Cozy went on a mission to figure out the mystery that was buried in the story. This book was great and is recommended to all readers who love inspirational novels.

The story was slightly controversial, but not in the least bit confusing. Ms. Cozy, the owner of the store, saw Ross and Fina come to the counter wanting another copy of the Children of Grace so each could have it, after having a small argument about who the book should go to since they both grabbed it "at the same time". She figured they were together, so, she also figured that they had to have a reason for wanting two different copies. They explained that they were not together and that they had each been looking for the book for sometime. When she explained that the book was not for sale, and that there was only one copy the two were very disappointed. She then invited them to a part of the store that customers were not allowed, it was a small room with plants and chairs to sit and read on.

The story showed emotion and pain well. When Ms. Cozy read the part of the story were Joe could not protect Iona after she had been raped but yet she was still his wife, he cried, long hard sobs that seemed as though they would never stop. Fina who already felt connected to Ross didn't know what to do, Ms. Cozy led her out of the room explaining that it was time to eat something, later on Ross joined them in the kitchen.

Redemption Song linked events in the story very well. At the end when Ross, Fina, and Ms. Cozy figured out the mystery of the Children of Grace, the author also wound in a way to explain how everything was connected by putting it in the dialogue itself. A combination of the three characters was used to explained that Fina was actually a direct descendant of Iona and Ross was related to her lover Joe. Fina and Ross became a couple by the end of the story and, along with Ms. Cozy, set out on a new mission, getting the book published with the whole story, including the lives of Fina and Ross in it.

Redemption song was an exceptionally good book with a great plot. The characters show emotions and events in the story are linked in a very organized manner without losing the tone or flow of the story. This book is again recommended to readers who love inspirational stories.

An extremely touching and compelling novel. I especially loved the way the author described things; I could almost taste the fruit of her effort.
It truly does contain the Recipe of Life; I loved the moral.

    Book Description

The compelling new novel by Canada’s answer to Anne Perry.

In his forties, the Reverend Charles Howard still cut an impressive figure. A married Presbyterian minister in Toronto’s east end, Howard was popular with the congregation that elected him, especially with the ladies, and most particularly with Miss Sarah Dignam. Respected in the community, Howard, as Visitor for the House of Industry, sat in judgment on the poor, assessing their applications for the workhouse.

But now Howard is dead, stabbed and brutally beaten by someone he invited into his office. His watch and boots are missing. Has some poor beggar he turned down taken his vengeance?

Murdoch’s investigation takes him into the arcane Victorian world of queer plungers — men who fake injury all the better to beg — and the destitute who had nowhere left to turn when they knocked on the Reverend Howard’s door.

Maureen Jennings moved to Canada from Birmingham, England when she was seventeen. After studying Philosophy, Psychology, and English literature, she became an English teacher at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute. After eight years of teaching, she did an about face and set herself up as a psychotherapist. VICES OF MY BLOOD is her sixth Detective Murdoch mystery, but she has also published a non-fiction book entitled MAP OF YOUR MIND.

Detective Murdoch is called when Charles Howard, a Presbyterian minister, is found in his office stabbed and beaten. Murdoch has just made detective, and murder isn't a normal occurrence. Naturally it seems obvious to everyone, including Murdoch's boss, that the murderer is one of the "tramps" in town. But there is more to this mystery than meets the eye, and Murdoch tries to sift through various motives. Could the murderer have been a spurned spinster? Could the "Traveler" have stooped to murder? How about someone desperate for food who was refused by Howard in his role as a "Visitor?" All Murdoch has to go on is the fact that Howard's boots and watch were stolen and that the crime was one of passion:

"'You'd say a thief then, would you, detective?" asked Royce. 'That or somebody wants us to think so." Mr. Lyons indicated he had a question. "Dr. Ogden in her excellent testimony has told us that there is every indication that the assailant was in a mad fury. I wonder then, if a person in such a state would have the presence of mind to deliberately mislead the police. I beg your pardon, Mr. Murdoch, I have no wish to cast aspersions on your competence.'"

There is something about Canadian mysteries that promises a slow but steady character and plot development that culminates in a neat package. Maureen Jennings is no exception. This is a period mystery, and Jennings has evidently done her research. We are transported back into the world of Victorian Canada in this case, where women stayed at home with their bodices and meek subservience to their husbands. Jennings creates a murky scenario with stand out characters and a whodunit that is as elusive as Murdoch's killer. A big thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Changed my mind about Scarred Lands.......2002-11-27

Originally, I was going to incorporate some of the Scarred Lands materials (Hollowfaust, Relics and Rituals, many of the monsters from the Creature Collections) into my own campaign world. I bought this to help me flesh out some ideas about gods and religions and the history of my campaign world.

I'm a Scarred Lands convert now.

This is the best sourcebook I have _ever_ read about a pantheon. Much more than just the stats and a blurb (like most books), this contains tremendous amounts of coherent background material, excellent descriptions of the gods, titans, servitors and religions. And like much of the Sword and Sorcery works, it is very well thought and internally consistent.

This book was enough to get me to purchase the Ghelspad campaign setting (another story and another review, but also excellent), and was good enough for me to use lock, stock and barrel. What is nice about this work (like many other Sword and Sorcery work) is that it could be used outside of the Scarred Lands with minimal work - and that is a serious boon to the many busy GMs out there.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, great drawings, lots of information... but..........2002-11-15

As I always say, why do we need the stats of a divine creature that must miles away from even the most powerful pc? The info about the pantheon, the story, the tales about the titanswar, well, they're just great, but reducing a god to a sheet filled with numbers it's just like making him mundane and falible. A great book and a greater weak point.

    4 out of 5 stars Divine Blessings.......2002-07-19

Very detailed book allowing for great game play and an excellent source for DMs and gamers alike. If you are an online player in Fangsfall, this book is caulked full of very usefull info to deal with your players dieties and others. As any avid gamer knows, the diety worshipped plays a huge role in you characters life, as well as any foes of that diety, not only does this book have a list of Dietys, Avatar stats, and Titans; it also has a great amount of information for followers such as holy weapons for lesser known gods, and some great arifacts. The artistry isn't the greatest and you -could- manage without this book, but it's a wonderful addition if you have the extra *ching*.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-12-31

This book is a must-have if you are a fan of the Scarred Lands setting, being chocked full of information about not only the divine avatars and the titans, but demigods as well. It also introduces the notion of Divine Heralds and Pages, the more potent servitors of the gods. Interspersed with the text about the gods are several major and minor artifacts with a backstory and indicators of the roles they have placed in the world. Perhaps most impressive, however, are the several new divine spell domains presented. These are an excellent addition, and are useful for rounding out the powers of clerics and gods in other campaign settings. In all, I strongly recommend this book; it is very well written, the art is excellent, the material is absolutely imperative if you run a Scarred Lands game, and much of the content is useful even to other campaign worlds.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Gods!.......2001-12-31

Divine and Defeated is a truly epic work about the gods of the Scarred Lands. The deities are well thought out with a CONSISTENT background that is both detailed and open enough for a G.M. to use in almost any plot that can be imagined. All the gods and titans are given a standard layout with a large amount of easily found detail. If you intend to use a Scarred Lands setting i would rate this as {5 STARS}. As a resource for other campaign worlds, it's a bit limited. Unless you intend to drop the entire pantheon into your campaign each god you do use will need some surgery on his history. Which defeats some of the purpose of buying a book with such detail. What makes it useful for other games is that {Divine and the Defeated} can show a G.M. the right way to create a pantheon. The Scarred Lands are supposed to be 3E with a 1st feel. I would say they succeeded admirably.

      Book Description

The most accessible book on the ancient Indian system of Ayurvedic nutrition and healing, from an internationally acclaimed practitioner.

Many of us who struggle with one-size-fits-all fad diets are realizing that the only program that can promise lasting benefits is a comprehensive yet individualized approach to nutrition and weight loss. This is the very attitude espoused by Ayurvedic medicine, the 5,000-year-old holistic system that incorporates diet, exercise, breathing, meditation, visualization, and other therapies into its practice. Perfect Balance illustrates how the principles of Ayurvedic medicine can be used by anyone, no matter what their present health needs may be.

Beginning with a self-test to determine an individual's specific metabolic and psychological profile, the book emphasizes the importance of balance among all levels of the healing process-mind, body, and spirit. The three dominant groups that emerge are based on metabolic type (skin, hair, digestion, sleep patterns, etc.) and psychological characteristics (emotional tendencies, learning patterns, goals, and relationship needs). It then presents clear guidelines for selecting foods and making lifestyle choices to support a natural, healthy state and avoiding those practices that disrupt natural metabolic balance.

Perfect Balance offers a profile-specific, flexible "21-Day Plan" to integrate dietary and lifestyle changes sensibly. It explains the importance of timing and food combinations and outlines nutritional prescriptions for particular conditions caused by stress and other lifestyle issues. Most important, the Ayurvedic approach takes into account the many factors often ignored by other programs, which ultimately determine an optimal state of harmony and health for each individual. Notes. Index.

      3 out of 5 stars Vegan Help?.......2003-05-02

Although I found this book to be easy to read and the test to be thorough enough to determine my body type, I had a really hard time figuring out how to adapt to it, since the diet prescribed was not vegan. I don't know, maybe I can't be vegan and practice ayurveda?

      2 out of 5 stars Ayurveda.......2002-12-15

I was truly disappointed in this book. I bought it so that I could understand Ayurveda, but this writter discounts the true principles. He refers to Vata, Pita and Kapha as Body Types A,B and C. I think he should call it by the proper names and not try to take shortcuts. It is not a well written book on the subject. If you are interested in Ayurveda, I highly recommend Deepak Chopra's "Perfect Health". Not only does Chopra cover the topic completely, his book is inspiring. Perfect Balance is unrealistic. It recommends that people take teaspoons of spices and herbs daily. While the true way of following Ayurveda is to cook with the spices and herbs in the food. I do not recommend this book. It has some helpful information, but not enough. Why read more then one book on the subject? Deepak Chopra's book covers it all and he also has a website that offers Ayurveda products.

5 out of 5 stars A brain friendly Ayurvedic gem!.......2001-09-06

Ever been really interested in Ayurvedic principles of nutrition but the reading material that you come across is very heavy, and only ends up confusing you more before you even started to research the topic? Well this is the book for you! Atreya once again provides a book on Ayurveda that is easy to read and understand. How does he do this you may ask? Ayurveda is one of the many Vedic sciences that have been gifted to us through the insight of the Rishis and sages of the past. Thus being a Vedic science its foundations are the roots of Vedic philosophy, and the language and terms used are that of Sanskrit. To one not common with the philosophy and Sanskrit terms, reading material that refers to these in order to explain the science can be very confusing and become too heavy a lesson to be able to mentally digest. This is where Atreya shines. Although fully conversant with the science and its original spoken and written form of Sanskrit, Atreya provides tools that first explain the original form then provides an alternative way of remembering the meaning without having to use or learn Sanskrit. Perfect Balance is a thorough insight into the principles of Ayurvedic nutrition and its practice. Its contents cover a vast spectrum, from "Classical Ayurveda", to "The power of perfect digestion", to "Your perfect weight: How to lose weight permanently by increasing metabolic function", are but to name a few. Atreya also gives the reader a chance to follow a structured 21 day plan in order to embrace Ayurvedic principles in a controlled and guided environment. The inquisitive who have never come across Ayurveda before, too the practitioner that has embraced the Ayurvedic lifestyle for some time, all will find "Perfect Balance" to be a wealth of knowledge.

Just a correction on the latest review regarding the taking of spices and herbs in our daily life. Yes one does cook with herbs, spices and food according to ones Prakriti(constitution) and Vikriti(present state of imbalance), however Ayurvedic medicine prescribes formulas made of different herbs and spices to be ingested daily and at certain times depending on the quality (Guna) of the substance and the desired effect. For instance the Ayurvedic formula Trikatu which is a combination of Sunthi (dry ginger powder) maricha (black pepper) and Pippli (long pepper). Looking at the individual substances we would expect to find two of the three in most kitchen pantries and if black pepper is not in ever kitchen in the modern world then I would be truly amazed such is the commonality of this spice. This formula Trikatu is revered for its effect on correcting slow digestive problems (low Agni), expelling mucus (Kapha) and toxins (ama) out of the channels (Srotas) and as a stimulant.
Or take Trijat, made of cinnamon, cardamom, and cinnamon leaf, this combination of spices reduces Ama (toxicity), stimulates Prana (the vital force, energy) and increases Agni (the digestive fire). Most of the ingredients found in the two formulas can be found in the kitchen cupboard and it is this simplistic approach to healing that Atreya is trying to share. Present the knowledge in an easily accessible fashion that all can share. If one wishes to read more "in-depth" material that goes into the Ayurvedic fundamentals in detail then Atreya's previous books "Practical Ayurveda: Secrets for Physical, Sexual & Spiritual Health", "Ayurvedic Healing for Women: Herbal Gynecology and "Secrets of Ayurvedic Massage" all deal with this. As a student of Ayurvedic medicine I can honestly say that Atreya's knowledge is unquestionable.

          Book Description

With some corn syrup, drink mix powder and water, you can make a splendid concoction of stage blood—without spending an arm and a leg. From budget-friendly frights to sophisticated props, this book offers dozens of imaginative ways to haunt a house for Halloween. Readers will find generously illustrated step-by-step instructions for creating a barbecued skull, devil eyes, bonehead tableware, a magic bottle, a glowing brain and other projects. The book details ways to enhance an eerie ambiance with effects like blacklights and music. Props use many common household items and tools. Where specialty items are required, the author tells where they can be found at a reasonable cost. Projects take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete.

The chapters ooze with tips on topics like creating apprehension and surprise, using design to guide guests, creatively using plastic skulls, and making papier-mâché masks and molded hands. There are recipes for fake blood and vomit and ideas for using them, and other creative and adaptable ideas. Appendices include "Merry Halloween," which advises, "One of the best times to look for bargains on Halloween prop-building materials is right after Christmas"; an alphabetical listing of props and supplies and where they can be found; a list of specialty suppliers; and an "epitaph" inviting comments.

The projects are explained well, the directions are clear, and I feel I would be able to re-create the clever props. Unfortunately there are no instructions for large sized props such as figures, monsters, etc. that are expected in a haunted hosue. All the props are on a small scale..at least half the book is devoted to creating different painting effects on skulls. There are also ideas for masks, brains, severed hands, and other small props such as skull flowers, flatware, salt & pepper shakers, candy dish, etc.
There is useful information on lighting, black lights, adding eyes to a prop, and general setting up of a scene which will help me with my haunted house decorating, but I won't use most of the other projects.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC HALLOWEEN PROJECTS.......2007-02-11

When I was a kid growing up in the 70's, Halloween decorations pretty much consisted of those cardboard characters you taped on your windows and light up jack-o-lanterns. Heck the main decoration was the pumpkin you carved yourself. Today, Halloween decorations generate millions each year. There are entire superstores selling nothing but Halloween décor and costumes that spring up every Fall. The Fright Catalog has Hollywood-caliber props that cost in the thousands of dollars. It's easily become the biggest holiday for decorating next to Christmas and getting bigger every year.

The Hollywood Propmaker's handbook is the perfect book for those who love decorating for the season but who don't want to spend all of their hard-earned cash at those stores. The book is written by Keith Pitek whose work has been seen in Haunted Attraction Magazine. Pitek presents some two-dozen projects that can be made with inexpensive items, many of which you might have lying around the house.

Pitek begins by covering various techniques to setting up your outdoor display covering things which seem so simple and make perfect sense such as where to set-up speakers for sound, the best ways to display props, the use of remote controls, and lighting. Pitek also covers the use of black lights, techniques for painting skulls, wiring your props for light, and using two-way mirrors.

In the project section, Pitek provides several different types of skulls using inexpensive plastic skull props that are available at the Halloween stores as well as major retailers. Create one with light up twinkling eyes that doesn't take an electrician to wire; paint one so that it looks like it was just dug up out of a grave. The painting uses common household ingredients such as shoe polish or wood varnish. It's really all in the technique! Perhaps the most ambitious is the barbecued skull, which when finished, will look like it was just retrieved out of an incinerator.

One of my favorite projects, again one which is quite detailed, is the partially eaten hand made with a hand shaped gelatin mold and several other items. Done right, it creates a stunningly realistic looking prop. Pitek also provides a sure-fire recipe for stage blood that can be made with corn syrup and red-colored Kool-Aid. Pitek concludes with a detailed reference section informing readers where the items used in the props can be purchased as well as providing the phone numbers and websites to many different suppliers.

Now, these items are not your average weekend craft projects. Some are quite easy and can be made in an hour. Others are very involved and take many hours, or even days to finish, but the results will be worth it.

No color photos, but the step-by-step black and white images and clear directions need little color to prove involving.

I've been building a haunted house with a church group for maybe 5 years running. The youth won't let me stop! Every year I get a call asking if I'll help with the haunted house, both from the participants and the patrons. Everybody loves it!

OK, so the book doesn't provide dimensioned engineering drawings, and it maybe a bit vague. Working with a youth group, it's perfect. They often only need some general thoughts, and they can run with the details.

There are a lot of ideas for content posted to the internet. Chavez does a reasonable job of educating about what to look for in those ideas, so you look for ideas that are safe, provide a reasonable effect, and for a reasonable price.

A great book for the motivated home haunter, great ideas and scenes that can be built on a budget. Your not going to put any haunted house out of business, but you will be the hit of the neighborhood. You need to have a creative mind to go along with the concepts presented, this a guide not a by the numbers book. If you are like me and work on Halloween projects all year round, you will enjoy this book. If you want so some cute wood cutouts to put in the yard, this book is not for you.

The 'HHHH' was designed for haunted house enthusiasts who are brimming with imagination. It's written like a sugar cookie recipe to be dressed up with any kind of toppings or mix-ins that the reader can concoct. If the book is followed step by step it would produce a simple and effective charity haunt, but mix in a healthy dose of creativity and the sky (or grave yard) is the limit. Anyone who can't pull a beautiful haunt from this book is severely lacking in haunt talent and needs to leave haunting to the professionals.

2 out of 5 stars Basic instructional book at best........2005-07-31

Very basic book that MAY be helpful to a home haunter, but if you serious about producing a haunted attraction, this book will be of little help to you. The book's drawings are simplistic and the description of props is somewhat vague, however, there are some basic technics that can utilized to create certain effects. The book's discussion of the finances of a haunted attraction is very limited and unimaginative. The use of actors to replace mechanical activation of effects is prominent in this book which leads me to believe that the authors financial skills are lacking( Labor cost & insurance are monumental hurdles in any haunted attraction). In general I would reccommend that you save your money on this one, the internet provides most of information in the book "free for the asking".

I just wasted abou 30 bucks on this book. i hope I can getit back too. If you are serious about wanting to make a haunted house that is scary, don' buy this. I think this book is for people that ar trying to make their house look cool on halloween or whatever. It talks about running an actual haunted house event, but like I say, if you are serious, this is just not even helpful. The most important aspects of operating a haunted house are just outlined briefly in the book. Most of the book concentrates on building props and masks. It dosen't even make sense on most of it. Why wouldn't someone just buy masks and create the haunted house like they wanted too? i found ONE idea out of the whole book i liked. As far as knowing how to get one started I'm right where I began. In my opinion, you just have to try to get a haunted house in order by your own insticts, because I learnt the hard way, books can't do it!

              1. Tile Basics (characteristics, sizes/shapes, room prep)
              2. Tools and Matrials (prep tools, cutting tools, setting tools, basic materials)

              9. Repairs and maintenance
The pictures and illustrations are clear and easy to follow. I also like that the pictures are relatively up to date and modern looking. In short, this book has set me up to succeed in all of my tiling projects.

The major American artist invented the concept of a wordless novel with this evocative, text-free "woodcut" narrative. Autobiographical in nature, the novel recounts Ward's struggles with his craft and with life in the 1920s. The intricate woodcuts transcend all barriers of language, and fresh details reward the eye with every review. 139 black-and-white illustrations.

1 out of 5 stars Title of the book has me wondering.......2007-06-20

I have no doubt this artist from the 1920's put much meticulous and thought provoking imagery into his work based on the positive book reviews by others. But look carefully at the title and you have to wonder what the author's intent was when he titled the book GODS' MAN and not GOD'S MAN. The former may suggest a multitude of minor gods and the latter suggests one and only GOD. I will not buy or read this book based on DR M. Scott Peck's book titled 'Glimpses of the Devil'. I purchased and read Dr. Peck's book recently from Amazon and, in it, his review of the book "Gods' Man" warns it is an unhealthy book, especially so for children. Dr. Peck is a retired psychiatrist in good standing in his field of profession. I have taken to heart his review, and I would hope parents would prevent this book, GODS' MAN, which easliy lend's itself to children because of it's few words and mostly picture format, from falling into the hands of a young child.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, if baffling.......2006-08-13

It is wonderful to have this book back in print after so many decades. This is a real achievement in visual storytelling, and helped blaze the trail for the modern graphic novel.

The format is starkly simple: one woodcut image per page, black on white. Woodcut isn't a tonal process - grades of light and dark come from alternations of white and black, for which Ward favors fields of parallel lines. His vision tends towards angular, harsh geometries; still, he uses this style in some surprisingly warm ways. "God's Man" is a product of the 1920s Art Deco era, so the combination of hard edges and soft sentiment works well.

Since it's a novel without words, much of the imagery is open to interpretation. Even so, Ward delivers his story clearly enough to leave me wondering: is this his own story, about a young artist fumbling and then finding his way in the world? How literal is that amulet of artistic power in Ward's personal mythology? This woodcut artist wields his knives fluently and with grace, so there may a thinly disguised autobiographical note, about the feeling that his own power comes into him from his chosen tools.

Don't believe it, though. This artist has full control of his medium. It's an early work from a long, successful career, so I can't even say that he was yet at the height of his craft. "God's Man" is the first I've seen of Ward's work, but it's given me the taste for more.

4 out of 5 stars in the canon of Camp.......2006-07-29

Susan Sontag, in her "Notes of Camp," included "God's Man"--along with the drawings of Aubrey Beardsley, the operas of Bellini, and the original "King Kong"--in the canon of Camp. The novel does have a poignant simplicity. The characters are not human but symbols. The work resembles exquisite high-school poetry, dramatic, overly so. Redolent of a pubescent sexual fear. Cannot be taken seriously and as such must be taken seriously.

              5 out of 5 stars A True classic.......2005-12-14

I first ran across Lynd Ward's art at a Flea Market in Birmingham where a vendor had framed several pieces from one of his books. The images were so powerful that I had to know who the artist was. Lynd Ward, along with Virgil Finlay, has become one of the two major influences on my own black and white art and this book is one of his best. The story is clearly told with hauntingly beautiful, bold woodcut illustrations. This is probably the best of his woodcut novels. If you enjoy this novel I would also recommend tracking down a copy of Storyteller Without Without Words. This out of print Coffee Table Book collects six of his woodcut novels along with many of his other illustrations.

              5 out of 5 stars Through a Glass Darkly.......2005-12-09

Well, Perhaps both Dr. M. Scott Peck and J. Daussi (below) give God's Man a little too much weight. This grandfather of the graphic novel is in itself neither destructive nor deeply philosophical.

In fact, it reveals a rather dated worldview, complete with a one-dimensional robber baron, an unholy contract and a sharp division between "bad" and "good" women. This "silent" book is a perfect companion to the typical silent film of its era.

Still, silent films are wonderful in their own right, as is God's Man. The artwork is beautifully done and the story powerfully told.

Because the story is a simple allegory with a pessimistic bent, it is understandable how one (as one of the reviewers below says) could get very attached to it in adolescence or early adulthood, when our idealistic childhood illusions have been shattered but experience has not yet replaced them with a viable life philosophy.

This book is the perfect gift for the sensitive high school or college student. It will help him/her feel less alone in that crisis-of-faith period. It's also terrific for someone who is well-versed in the culture of the early 20th century and will be able to appreciate its context. I recommend it.

                              Book Description

"Both Sides of the Rainbow" is based on a true story of a handsome, young gay man who moves to Beverly Hills to pursue a career in modeling. His adventures and misadventures involve many of the stars of the 70's and 80's. Lana Turner, Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly are just some of the Hollywood legends he knew. While the fast lane was addictive and exciting for the 24 years he shared with a popular movie star, he could see the destruction of his friends' lives and made a life changing decision to leave it all and settle down with the love of his life and his two West Highland terriers in Georgia...the other side of the rainbow.

"I read until 11:30 last night until I fell out of bed laughing at the "Tree" story. (72-year-old woman)

"My husband came into the room as I read the "Lucille" story to my Mom and wouldn't leave. He sat there laughing for two more stories. That was a first. (58-year-old teacher)

                              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I know who he is..........2004-02-18

I lived in the same building and ate at the French Market every morning, as Tony Somertino did, though we didn't know each other. I know who he is and who "Brik" is. Once you know who Brik is, it's easy to find out the identity of the actress he married. Brik divorced her as his career was sinking and hers was taking off. She eventually totally eclipsed him and everyone else, practically defining the 1970's with her beauty and style. She is still on the scene today, though in a diminished capacity. And Brik was indeed one of the biggest stars on television, a man making millions and millions of dollars, consistently, from the mid-sixties to the mid-eighties, in one hit series after another. Brik's career never seemed to have any valleys, only peaks, but as the 70's melted into the 80's, his long ride at the top finally began to end. I was very surprised to learn who Brik actually was at the time because there has never been a shred of gossip about his sexuality, and that's true some 20-odd years after those French Market breakfasts. (And I've read just about everything from Kenneth Anger to Boze Hadleigh.)

Tony was very cute, a bit femme, and he obviously possessed the whiptail of a stringray when riled. You can bet that Brik, 60'ish now, remarried with grown children, gave Tony an ironclad settlement agreement, which he would likely have breached had it not been for the opening "agent receiving a mysterious manuscript" bit. Tony's certainly no angel, but he's not stupid. Perhaps it was a bid for an increase in hush money. And how's that for a blind item!

God apparently doesn't hand out looks and talent simultaneously, because, even with the help of two ghosts, Both Sides of the Rainbow is as thin as silk with none of the sheen, but I think it accurately reflects the man who lived the story. I recall him as being a bit of a snob because of his status as the "manstress" of a major television star, and this snobbery shines through, even with all the editing. Yes, the cars really were beautiful. And, yes, the knee socks have got to go.

This is just my opinion, as I have given this book to a friend who really enjoyed it...however, I filled him in as to the real players' names in what was, to me, an overwrought depiction of one long, teenaged, temper tantrum (with the exception of the parts about his family, which were truly hilarious and should be cut out and expanded).

3 out of 5 stars Juicy gossip-fest, but who is who?.......2002-09-25

I can't believe none of the other reviews mention my two major sentiments: CURIOSITY about who Tony Somertino is supposed to be, who Brik Moore is supposed to be, who Tony's group of gay celeb friends is supposed to be. It's like a whole bunch of blind items compressed into novel form, and I'd love to know who was being described.

Also, sorry, but incredible disgust at the quality of writing and, more to the point, editing of this book. I found typos on almost every single page that wouldn't be permitted in a technical manual, let alone a published novel. And the writer, although funny, needed a much stronger editing hand to rein in the Harlequinesque style of describing love, lovemaking, and most of all, fashion.

Very entertaining cotton candy for the brain, but with all the people working on it, the final product should have been a lot more professional.

                              5 out of 5 stars Non-stop reading & laughing.......2001-02-26

I'm a chilean woman of 45, mother of 5, open-minded, living in a very closed-minded country. I have several gay friends whom I love and respect and I've bought some gay literature not available in my country, to learn more about gay people's problems and the best way of becoming a good and helpful friend for them. Of all the twenty something gay books I've read, I recommended only two of them to straight people, and just this one to my mother. It's her first and only gay book, and she was reluctant to read it, but one night she phoned me arround 11:00 pm, and just said: "sorry, I had to call you to tell you I've been crying with laughter over the tree and the chandeliere chapters". I recommend it to everyone, gay, straight or bi.

5 out of 5 stars Both Sides of the Rainbow.......2001-01-04

I couldn't stop laughing while reading this book. I was depressed when I picked up the book but my mood was totally turned around after reading it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2000-10-11

Gay, straight, bi - who cares! This book is hilarious. You will never think of certain Hoolywood types in the same way again. They are as insecure and fake as any wannabe on the corner! Tony's life is a fun read with a lot of heart and thought. Nice & short chapters make for a fast and fun read.
