Book Description
Queen of hip hop fiction Nikki Turner follows her gritty, emotionally charged novel The Glamorous Life with this new tale from the hood featuring a beautiful down-on-her-luck sister who can out-hustle the best of them as she rises from the ghetto to glory.
After Mercy’s beloved dad is murdered in cold blood on her seventh birthday, her mother gives her up to foster care. But despite an unsavory upbringing, Mercy vows to make something of herself–at all costs.
Working as a concierge at a hotel notorious for its shady clientele, Mercy meets and falls hard for a notorious dealer who keeps her living large in Gucci clothes and off-the-hook apartments. Then she lands a real lucrative deal: running drugs up Interstate 95 from Miami to New York.
But Mercy doesn’t want to live the gangsta life forever. She’s got bigger dreams. She turns legit and makes her mark, yet despite a new, cleaned-up career, she can’t get the streets completely out of her blood. A sexy hustler named C-Note steals her heart. And as their relationship heats up, Mercy discovers that their pasts are hopelessly–and tragically–entwined.

Traveling to the desolate rock-strewn deserts of northen Kenya, where the temperature can hit a brutal and dry 130 degrees, would be enough of a trip, but scientist Alan Walker also takes us on a trip in time, far back in time, where we meet a boy who will help to re-write the story of our human ancestors. The mysterious boy, whose skeleton is the best specimen of Homo Erectus, the species long considered the proverbial missing link between apes and humans, lived more than a million years ago. But in the hands of scientists whose skill is only matched by their curiosity, his bones talk to us today. A highly readable account which shows how paleoanthropologists, in work both painstaking and exciting, reach conclusions about the day-to-day life of the ancestors of modern man.
Book Description
"Fascinating. . . . As engaging an explanation of how scientists study fossil bones as any I have ever read." --John R. Alden, Philadelphia Inquirer
In 1984 a team of paleoanthropologists on a dig in northern Kenya found something extraordinary: a nearly complete skeleton of Homo erectus, a creature that lived 1.5 million years ago and is widely thought to be the missing link between apes and humans. The remains belonged to a tall, rangy adolescent male. The researchers called him "Nariokotome boy."
In this immensely lively book, Alan Walker, one of the lead researchers, and his wife and fellow scientist Pat Shipman tell the story of that epochal find and reveal what it tells us about our earliest ancestors. We learn that Nariokotome boy was a highly social predator who walked upright but lacked the capacity for speech. In leading us to these conclusions, The Wisdom of the Bones also offers an engaging chronicle of the hundred-year-long search for a "missing link," a saga of folly, heroic dedication, and inspired science.
"Brilliantly captures [an] intellectual odyssey. . . . One of the finest examples of a practicing scientist writing for a popular audience."

"A vivid insider's perspective on the global efforts to document our own ancestry."

Fascinating!!!.......2005-05-06
Pat Shipman and Alan Walker are not only brilliant scientists, but also superb authors. Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. Excellent for aspiring anthropologists, like myself, and ANYONE interested in human origins. Fantastic writing, excellent research. In fact, every book this husband and wife team has written is fantastic. TAKING WING by Pat Shipman, about Archaeopterix and the origin of flight is another highly addictive book!
I am not really interested in Alan Walker's life.......2005-04-13
It is largely a semi autobiogographic account of Alan Walker's life, which I am not concerned about, It does have some information on the Nariokotome Boy which I am very interested in.
As such it held little that kept me interested.
Very creative ideas and easy to digest for novice.......2005-01-21
Although this is obviously a book grounded in science, it's important to note that this isn't chemistry or quantum physics, where if you don't have specialized knowledge it will be a waste of your time. The authors here do a great job of presenting their findings and then explaining how and why they made the assumptions they did based on those findings. Anybody can follow their logic and come to their own conclusions based on the evidence. It is also very well written and even the story of the researchers travelling to Africa is quite interesting.
I saw another reviewer bashing the authors for making wild conclusions based on minimal evidence. But that is the creative genius of these people. They're not making wild conclusions, but rather the most logical findings they can working with tiny pieces of bone millions of years old. For instance, at one point the authors discuss finding evidence of a specific type of disease in a pre homo-sapiens fossil. We know that the person (or hominid!) would have been partially crippled for some extended period of time, and certainly unable to gather food and defend against predators. Much like reading tree rings, the next layers of bone show that the infection or disease healed, and the being likely recovered and went on with life. The fact of the recovery leads to the author's conclusion that at this point in pre-history, the (person) had someone else as a caregiver, helping gather water and food and offering shelter, etc. This is important and offers glimpses into the mental and emotional development at that point in time. It seems a rather simple idea, but it's just one of numbers of brilliant ideas the authors proffer that don't seem like wild conclusions at all.
The entire book is fascinating and quite honestly makes me wish I could go back in time and change professions.
An interesting take on Human Evolutions.......2002-05-03
Aside from being a fantastic professor and wonderful conversationalist Alan Walkier is a great writer. He and his wife Pat Shipman have taken many literary ventures together; this one being their best.
The challenge in popular scientific books is to make potentially dense material easy to read so that the reader doesn't feel burdened by the material he or she reads. Walker and Shipman do this very well in "Wisdom of the Bones". Walker successfully integrates two stories here- one of his trip to Kenya leading up to his team's revolutionary discovery of Turkana Boy (Homo erectus/ ergaster), and the other of Turkana Boy and his bretherin.
The book doubles as a pleasurable novel and a factually saturated work-- I've found this book an invaluable resource in many classes, but i've also enjoyed the plot line. Walker keeps one engaged throughout the book-- not an easy feat in the scientific world.
Too Heavy a Burden.......2001-03-04
This book reminds me that Christian Huygens "knew" that there was so much hemp growing on the planet Jupiter. How did he know?. . .Moons! That's how. Jupiter has so many moons. These would be used by lots of sailors. . .to guide their ships at night. Lots of sailors. . .lots of ships. Ships require miles of rope if they are to sail. Hence there must be a lot of hemp on Jupiter. And so it is that Walker makes so much out of so little evidence... An ancient hominid dies with a chronic bone disease and therefore must have had a lot of concerned family/companions and a massive social structure to have survived. The anterior-posterior dimension of the skeleton's cervical spinal canal is narrow, therefore the chest musculature couldn't have been sufficient to support the ability to speak (never mind that elderly humans frequently have spinal canals of 8 mm and never complain of problems speaking). It's fun to speculate about our ancestor and Walker and his team deserve great credit for finding the fine H. erectus specimen and scientifically documenting his sex, age, time of appearance on earth etc. maybe we should reserve accolades on this one until we have some more evidence....
Book Description
Christopher Hyde takes us to Dallas in November of 1963, where Homicide Detective Ray Duval is about to collide with history. The President's assassination has sent shockwaves of panic throughout the city. And with six months left to live, Duvall is trying to save one last life before he loses his own.
Customer Reviews:
Suspensful dogged police detection.......2006-01-11
Someone is killing the little girls. Again.
A suspense thriller and a fine police procedural.
This one has a fascinating premise. Set in Dallas, in 1963, the book covers five days, from November 20 through November 25. It involves the off-camera activities of several residents of the city who were involved one way or another in the calamitous assassination of the President of the United States. Yet, this is not another book about that calamitous event.
This is the story of one dying homicide detective of the Dallas, Texas, Police Department, who is assigned to track down the murderer of an antique and rare book dealer of the city, one Jennings Price. He is murdered and then left in a particularly hideous manner. Detective Ray Duval has other troubles. He's dying. Doctors have given him less than a year to live and he knows that he won't pass his upcoming police physical. He'd like to solve this last murder before he ends his career.
The pending visit of the president is merely a distraction. Duval goes home to see his father and older brother in a town several miles north of Dallas. He knows this is probably the last time he will ever see these people and he'd like to settle a few resentments with his family. While he's there a chance remark about several thirty year old killing of small girls, triggers a connection to the murder of Price.
Through the rest of the book Duval battles indifference, racial attitudes, the shooting of the president and hi own dwindling strength in a last attempt to find a monstrous killer and save one life before the end of his own. A powerful, teeth-grinding and supremely suspensful thriller that touches the nerve endings of anyone with an interest in good writing, good stories, recent history and the mystery genre.
Hyde's best.......2005-05-03
This is definitely one of the most underestimated books out there. Hyde brilliantly weaves a serial killer story within the days of Kennedy's visit to Dallas and assassination, avoiding clichés and pitfalls the whole way. All of Christopher Hyde's books are fantastic, but this might be the best.
Serial Killer Amidst The Kennedy Assassination.......2005-04-15
Set amongst the Kennedy assassination, though it really deals very little with that whole can of worms. Of course that doesn't mean that Hyde didn't take some interesting detours down a conspiritorial trail in dealing with that aspect of Dallas in November 1963.
Ray Duvall, a retiring Dallas Police Detective with heart disease in its final stages, and a bad case of father issues and sybling rivalray to match, must track down a serial killer with a penchant for young black girls. With all eyes and man hours focused into finding and prosecuting JFK's killer Ray must fight against his remaining time on Earth to catch a killer of young Black Girls in Texas 1963.
Searching through Dallas' seedier side of Dallas our intrepid Dectective runs into Jack Ruby, and Hyde's plot line sometimes mirrors Oliver Stone's JFK with searching for a killer amidst secretive, and highly placed homosexuals.
Another murder in 63 Dallas.......2004-05-27
Dallas, November 1963
To most people these words mean one thing - the JFK assosination.
But surely you don't think, that no other crime was commited in the city at the same time?
This is the story of one of those crimes. On November, 20 a mutilated body is found in a dump. A detective, who is days from retirement, due to declining health (he only has months to live) is assigned the case. And Ray Duval is not going to leave behind an open case. But two days later all hell breaks loose in Dallas, and no one cares about a dead antiques dealer and a black girl... Ray takes a one-man crusade to track his killer, who may be connected to Jack Ruby and some other shadowy figures.
Hyde gives a wonderfull feel of time and place, weathing the historical element into the story, making it a sub-plot and not the main one. Ray is a great character - he starts out as a big bully, but as the book goes you start to see more of him, making him one of the most rounded characters in recent thrillers.
A worthwhile Edgar nominee.......2004-02-27
Christopher Hyde takes us back to Dallas, November, 1963 where a horrible murder occurred. No, not that one-- actually a serial killer is at work. A cut up mutilated body is found in a refrigerator at the local garbage dump. Homicide detective Ray Duval is assigned the case. Duval, diagnosed with congestive heart failure is given a death sentence by his physician. With only a few months to live, Duval diligently tries to solve the case and by doing so save lives. His search reveals the murder is similar to some unsolved crimes 25 years ago. After the assassination of President Kennedy, he is virtually on his own in that the entire resources of the Dallas PD is working on the President's death. The stark contrast of the death of Kennedy to the death of a young black girl is both heartbreaking and illustrative of the times.
This is a fine book written and to be appreciated on many levels. It is much more than a typical serial killer novel. It is, in actuality, a searing indictment of the times. Having a penchant for characterizations, Hyde has created a very real detective hero in Ray Duval and that is the major strength of this work by an experienced novelist. Civil unrest, political upheaval and the very essence of life and death are all themes explored in great detail. Problems include a plot that goes on a bit longer than it should, as well as a solution that comes out of left field along with a predictable conclusion. A worthwhile nominee.

Very well balanced.......2003-06-12
Of course one should expect that from the father of the third edition d20 system. The previous reviewer is accurate about the content. I personally didnt think it was quiet as good as some other products available but its a added bonus that the content requires no review if your players want to use it. Its that well balanced.
MC does it again.......2003-05-15
The Book of Hallowed Might is an excellent sourcebook for divine spellcasting characters. Highlights include cool prestige classes (such as the Knight of the Pale), interesting feats (which tie in concepts like oaths, religious conversion, etc) and a large number of great new divine spells. There's also an alternate ranger and a few variant paladin classes.
On par with much of Mr Cook's previous material, including the excellent Books of Eldritch Might, Requiem for a God, etc. Highly recommended.

Love It!!!.......2007-01-27
This is a great down to earth parenting book with tons and tons of examples. I would recommend it to everyone. Also the book for teenagers is great too! I loved this book because all of his advice I could actually use and it worked unlike some of those other parenting books that are way to complicated and annoying or who don't give you any examples.

Civil War Swords.......2007-04-04
Beautiful book! Would have liked to see weapons of the north and south in the same book.
Finally an up-to-date source on Civil War blades.......2004-01-06
For years, the field of American military swords has only been superficially addressed. The foremost book on the topic, has been Harold L. Peterson's The American Sword, 1775-1945. Though a very good treatment of the subject, it has grown to be quite out-of-date in scholarship (the first edition was published in 1954). Since his book, there hasn't been any serious publication dedicated to American swords that is until now. John H. Thillman, an expert on U.S. cavalry and artillery sabers, has assembled a comprehensive and meaningful guide to Civil War sabers. The first section contains notes on design, materials, and components and is followed by a 16-page color section of photographs. The main body of the volume lists, in alphabetical order, every maker, importer, foreign manufacturer, assembler, retailer, and model. An important feature of this book is that it includes all known sabers from the prewar period dating to 1833. Every make and every known variation is covered with full history, tables and illustrations. The work is extensively illustrated with close-up images showing particular details of the weapons and how to distinguish one from another, as well as photographs of officers who used them. A truly groundbreaking work.
Civil War Cavalry & Artillery Sabers is well-written and beautifully illustrated. It is extremely easy to use when searching for a particular type of saber or manufacture. Sidebars in each section call out specific identifying characteristics and lists of inspectors of particular blades. The image quality is very good. A strong bibliography and useful index complement this book, making it easily one of the best works on American swords to come to light. The price might seem high, but at $79.95, it will be the most inexpensive lesson on Civil War swords a person can obtain. (originally reviewed for Military Trader magazine: www.militarytrader.com)
The best yet........2002-10-04
For years, the field of American Miliary swords has barely been addressed. Since Peterson's book, which is good, but by now quite outdated, there has been no orderly study of the field. Bezdek's books have been useful, but are not as comprehensive as Peterson's. The rest of what is out there has been amateurish. This has been particularly apparent if you are familiar with Jean L'Hoste's superb books on French swords. Finally, someone has come along, not only to fill the gaps, but to significantly expand our knowledge and understanding of American swords: John Thillman.
This is a well-written, beautifully illustrated book on sabers of the Civil War era. If you own it, you will have at your fingertips virtually every reliable bit of information known about the subject, in a wonderfully useful form. Best of all, the author is planning further volumes to cover other sword types. There can be no doubt: this is the book to buy. It will expand not only your understanding of American swords, but sword manufacture, manufacture in general during the Civil War, and the use of swords and sabers during the Civil War. Bravo, Mr. Thillman. Keep up the outstanding, and seminal work!
A Must for Civil War Collectors and Enthusiasts!.......2002-03-30
I have been interested in Civil War swords for the past 30 years. Unfortunately good sword reference books with pictures were limited. This volume answers allot of questions and has loads of images. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.
I recommend it as an excellent buy.

One idea dragged into book form.......1998-10-14
There seems to be a disturbing trend in the sewing machine embroidery world of taking a single idea and trying to turn it into a book. The technique described, while attractive, could easily be covered in a magazine article or at most a chapter in a book.

A Design Book that You Can Live Without.......2006-12-31
I regret I did not read some of the other below-3-star reviews before I bought this book - all of those comments are true. First of all, the text is impossible to read. One would have thought font size is a trivial point when it comes to the quality of a book, but trust me, it is not. After just 5 minutes with this book my head was swimming. Even the captions to the photos are quite difficult to read. Apart from the awful presentation, the author has little to offer readers: (1) Contents - if you are new to interior design, this book does not give any systematic, practical and to-the-point tips to get you started. Nor is it well-organized. I was expecting to learn the basics on the historical influences on style - the book does have a chapter on this topic, but it failed miserably to point out the key differences of different periods nor is it sufficiently illustrated. Everything is in a muddle. There is indeed a few glossaries of terms in the book, but I seriously wonder if it would be relevant for most amateur decorators, for example, the ones for fabric and period furniture. (2) Images - as one has to give up on reading the text of this book, one naturally turns to the photos in hope of finding design inspirations. As some of the other reviewers so rightly pointed out, the design images selected in this book is far from impressive. They may not be to the extreme of being ugly, but certainly one would find better styled pictures in any furniture catalogue, say even from Ikea. In summary, the book does not deliver what it promises in the title - I do not feel I have learnt anything useful or practical that I can immediately apply to decorating. If you are an absolute beginner to interior design and looking for practical tips on decorating, I would highly recommend the "Essentials" series ("Living Room Essentials, Bedroom Essentials, Bathroom Essentials etc) which offer easy-to-read, instructional and user-friendly knowledge. The designs featured in the books can often be easily emulated at any budget. If you are however more interested in the asthetics and styling aspects of decorating, you might find books like "New York Apartments" more inspirational as they feature stunning design projects, often by award-winning architects or interior designers.
Worst ever.......2006-04-20
We just bought a house and I bought many interior design/home decorating books recently and screened through a bunch in a book store. I bought this one because I saw it was named as a best seller, and I seriously do not understand how could this become a best seller, maybe best seller 5 tears ago? When the book arrived from Amzon, both my husband and I were shocked: Who would want to design like that? The pictures are simply ugly!!! Both the pictures and text are so dated, and the text type is the smallest I have ever seen. I could not bare to read two paragraphs because my eyes were too strained.
Dated.......2006-04-08
Too much fluff. Typeface is very small and hard to read. Pictures have a yellowish cast and the room scenes look dated.
A terrific book........2006-01-30
If your mind has been on other things, and you suddenly need to know all the basics, this is the book for you. All subjects are covered in a comprehensive way. This was a great help to me since I have needed to decorate a new house from scratch, and really never was acquainted with the basic ideas. If you need a really good start (and even middle and finish) try this book. I think it was well worth the price.
Helpful Book.......2002-06-21
This book is excellent for laying out the basics for decorating/designing a house. More so than other books, descibes in detail numberous aspects of decorating that are important and not just stating the obvious.
My only diappointment of the book are with the photographs. The books descibes dozens of differnt style of decorating. 95% of the photographs are of contemporary/modern homes. Having a few more traditional photographs would have been helpful.

Book Description
It's not every day that you make the most important phone call of your life based on a wish and a hunch. But that's exactly what promoter Sid Bernstein did when, feeling that the time was right for the Beatles to play America, he placed a single call to Brian Epstein and arranged the pop group's history-making event at Carnegie Hall. A year later, Sid presented John, Paul, George and Ringo to a sold-out Shea Stadium. That unforgettable performance, the first concert in a venue that large, changed the face of music.
"It's SID BERNSTEIN Calling . . ." is America's premier impresario's exciting ride through the decades with many of the twentieth century's greatest personalities. As a promoter, his extraordinary vision and instinct was evident during rock-and-roll's "British Invasion," when he imported a tidal wave of English bands-the Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, Moody Blues, The Kinks and others-to American shores. All the while, Sid, with his incomparable music savvy, was pivotal in the careers of James Brown, Ray Charles, John Denver, Joan Baez, Miles Davis-a veritable Who's Who in the recording industry. Also a rebuilder of dreams, Sid was instrumental in the triumphant comebacks of legends Tony Bennett and Judy Garland.
Sid takes us on his professional and personal journey, from high points such as his marriage to Broadway singer Geraldine Gale and appointment as Ambassador from Liverpool, through the incredible low points, like the breakup of his chart-topping group, the Young Rascals and the shocking death of John Lennon. We get an intimate look at Sid and the many celebrities he met along the way: Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, Ed Sullivan, Barbra Streisand, Paul Newman, Shirley MacLaine, the members of ABBA, even George and Barbara Bush!
In "It's SID BERNSTEIN Calling . . ." we're propelled into the world of show business and, through Sid's recollections, get to know some of its biggest stars. We do so gladly, listening with our hearts to this man who was always one step ahead of the beat-paving milestones in entertainment history.
Customer Reviews:
The book and the man.......2002-12-09
As a reporter for a weekly newspaper in Hudson County, I was able to interview Sid twice -- once for a profile in anticipation of his visit to the Beatlefest in Secaucus and later when he worked with a local promoter for a benefit. For both stories, this book helped bring out details of his life and his passions I would have missed, and helped me ask the right questions. It is a fun book about a special man, and for me, the book enlightened me about the details behind some of the more historic events of my life, such as what really happened when the Beatles came to America in 1964. This was a trip down memory lane. Thank you Sid.
The Real Deal.......2002-02-01
Sid Bernstein is nobody who would be called shy. His bold and confident approach to the music industry made him one of the most successful and historical legends among characters whose sheer presence could eclispe even superstars. Naturally, the book reads like Bernstein's personality: it's straightforward, New York-brassy, and honest. His personal, behind-the-scene accounts of the English invasion and its two major acts -- The Beatles and The Rolling Stones -- are worth the price of the book alone. But there's more to be learned about the evolution of the music biz from first-person advice than almost anywhere else. Best of all, it's a very quick read.
Sid Bernstein is "The Man!".......2001-11-20
This book is a MUST read! The impact of the Beatles on our society is immeasurable.
Sid Bernstein promoted the biggest stars in show biz to the heights of their careers. But is was Sid who put his own career on the line and brought the Beatles to America. Sid Bernstein changed the course of society!
An amazing story! "It's Sid Bernstein Calling!" is the book you should be reading right now!
The Jerry McGuire of The Entertainment Biz.......2001-10-29
"It's Sid Bernstein Calling" might seem to be one, long show business success story, but it's not.
It's way better. It's many entertaining show business success stories in the life of one man.
"It's Sid Bernstein Calling" is a well-written story of the many and varied successes of a kid from the Bronx, who took his chances and managed the biggest acts in show business.
Bernstein was the first guy to sense that The Beatles were going to hit it big; he organized the world's first modern rock concert (The Beatles, Shea Stadium, August 1965) and his tireless promotion of superstar artists is a textbook in real world show biz promotion.
The book is well written, a pleasure to read. Arthur Aaron's well-researched writing tells Sid Bernstein's story and never gets in the way of dealing with Bernstein's experiences, personal life and work ethics. The ups and downs are all there. Bernstein holds nothing back. It's a real story about the real thing.
Read it for such great ancedotes as how a piano got him to promote Abba, how he helped Tony Bennett sell out Carnegie Hall, helped promote The Young Rascals and the dozens of other superstars who have benefited from his golden touch.
Sid Bernstein is a rarity today - an honest, trusthworty and hardworking musical and theatrical promoter. A must read if you want to know about show business and treating people with class and respect.
