Working-class mum and housecleaner Lois Meade plies her sleuthing skills once again after discovering a dead body--dressed in a suit of armor--in a chapel.
Customer Reviews:
Looking forward to the next one!.......2007-04-23
I loved the setting of this book, in a small village in England. I could "see" the houses and the people. The whole book is very British. This book, the second in the series, was much better to me than the first. I flew through the book this time, savoring the familiar setting and enjoying Lois' new role as an employer. I thought this book was great fun, and had to restrain myself from diving right into the third one - don't want to burn myself out! But I will definitely be reading the rest of this series!

enjoyed this book, would recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries
A Poseur.......2005-12-18
Lois and Derek Meade are a married couple who have been married for seventeen years. Derek, an electrician, is rewiring the Waltonby Pub. Lois is planning to set up a cleaning service and asks family members to suggest a name. One of the children comes up with the excellent idea of the New Brooms.
A customer at the pub, the Major, claims his name is John Todd-Nelson, a deceit, since his name is plain John Smith. His connection to the military is doubtful, too. He likes to talk to young barmaids. Lois, entering a church at Dalling, encounters what seems like a drugged dog and the dead body of the Major suited up in armor. Notifying police authorities, she is persuaded to act as a police informant should she encounter anything unusual in her work. Her relationship with her new business and the cleaners she hires is set forth in a good and interesting way.
A wrinkle in the situation is that the Major's apparel seems to be relevant to the presence of a theatrical venture in a neighboring town. House cleaners and house cleaners-not- hired become actors in the mystery of what comes to be a double murder and other criminal conduct.
Even Derek appears to be a victim when he is struck by a hit and run driver in a big black car. Fortunately, Derek recovers and the police and Lois sort things out in a satisfactory manner in order to make sense of the numerous strange events occurring in Lois's surroundings. Lois Meade is a winning reluctant, amateur sleuth.
"Terror on Tuesday".......2005-09-29
This 2nd book in the British village cleaner series lives up to the promise of the first. I enjoy series mysteries as much for the growth and changes in the characters as for the whodunnit aspects, and this series does not disappoint. Looking forward to finishing out the week with Lois and her merry bunch.
Started out good but the ending lacked something.......2005-04-16
This is the second book of a "day of the week" English cozy mystery series, and I had read the "Monday" book. I thought then that the author showed promise but the book didn't quite deliver, and I have the same feeling about this book. It's actually about a 3 1/2 star book but Amazon doesn't offer that option.
There are so many intriguing things going on early in the book -- including a body found in a suit of armor -- and lots of interesting and memorable characters (not one of those books where you have to take notes to keep track of who is who because the characters are so flat). No, the characterization is good. But somehow the ending fell flat.
The "detective" is working class Lois, married to Derek, with three school-aged children and living in a village in England. She had begun cleaning houses in book 1, and in this book, she's decided to start a cleaning business. In the course of cleaning, she stumbles upon a corpse, and Cowgill, the somewhat mysterious police detective with whom she has a Watergate-Deep Throat sort of relationship (they meet in secret from time to time), asks her to poke around in the course of her work and see what she can find out.
One of the cleaners she's hired makes her a bit nervous, but it's not clear if her fears are justified. Then there's a friend of hers who is being abused by her husband -- and a teenage girl who is mysteriously hospitalized, and her family won't talk about it. How does it all connect? And is something odd going on at the local amateur theater? A second person is found murdered, and Lois fears for her family.
This is a readable book -- and I'll read more in the series -- but I just felt it wasn't a four star book, let alone a five. I hope these books get better as the author gets more experience. As I said, this author definitely shows promise.

A mildly tasty treat.......2006-09-22
Mystery readers who are sticklers for plot will find this a bit thin--oh, more than a bit thin. There is a murder and a murderer, to be sure, but the tracking down of the latter is hit and miss. The atmosphere is no different from the author's other books in this series, an inn in Amish country. As always, the characters are good. But what one reads this series for is the humor. It is here, but much of it is right out of the previous and ensuing volumes, take your pick. If the reader doesn't read the Hernia (sic) books too close together, the wisecracks will amuse. At least a year should be allowed between these or the reader will get the impression that this is a rerun.
It's Probaby Better to Eat and Drink.......2003-10-17
This book started out a bit better than the previous ones, but I found it got quite stale pretty fast. Part of the problem is that Ms. Myers has to repeat everything with every new installment in the series. Then the little comments don't seem so funny anymore. For example we've heard how Magdalena's parents died in every single book, and I'm sure it will be in every other one in the series. Magdalena has some original funny moments in this book, and that's what keeps me reading. I will try to persevere with the series, but it's hard slogging. In this book the Penn Dutch Inn is being used to host a cooking show. Magdalena's cousin Freni is entering her unbeatable bread pudding into the contest, and things start really cooking when the owner of the company who is sponsoring the contest is found dead in Magdalena's barn.
No Spice in "...Wary".......2001-08-16
I love this edible mystery series. But I must say that "...Wary" left me weary. I found much of the narrative to be repeated from other books in the series. The characters were for the most part uninteresting, and the plot line a bit thin. Ms. Myers was not up to her usual standards on this one. Buy it? Yes! How can we miss out on one, even if it's a little undercooked?
Cooking contest at the PennDutch Inn.......2001-06-30
Much to Magdelena Yoder's surprise, her cook Freni Hostetler has arranged for a cooking contest to be held at the PennDutch Inn. Freni is one of the contestants and hopes to use the prize money to bribe her daughter-in-law Barbara to divorce her husband (Freni's son.) Enter a group of interesting guests, all of them either contestants or judges in the cooking contest. When one of the guests is killed, everyone else becomes a suspect. Each guest has a reason to hate the murder victim and this creates some red herrings for the reader. The person who is eventually revealed as the murderer has the weakest motive of the group, but regardless the book provides some light and enjoyable reading.
GREAT BOOK.......1998-09-16
Magdalena, the proprietor of the Penn Dutch Inn, is a Mennonite woman. It is always interesting to get her perspective of the many varied situations that come her way. She is coherced into having a cooking contest at the Inn which results in murder. GREAT SERIES!!!!!

This is a very good book with heplful information
A wonderful book!.......2001-03-30
I bought this book hoping to find some insight into a friend's crack addiction.
This book teaches you about cocaine and cocaine addiction. It talks about who can be a cocaine addict and how to tell if you or a loved one is an addict.
The real life stories touch the heart and show that you aren't the only person going through what you are going through.
All in all this is a great book for those dealing with cocaine/crack addiction.
Thank YOU Thank YOU!.......1998-07-20
I did not really come to closure of the old part of my life until I read this book. Rice is incredible. The stories must be true. I felt as though I knew all these people. Thank you for taking the time to write this book.

The Big Toy Box At Sears(1951-1969)
ASIN: 1887790039 |
Book Description
In the days before everyone shopped at the local mall, young girls poured over the Sears, Roebuck and company's "Wishbook" to carefully pick the new toys they would ask Santa to bring. And during the Fifties and Sixties, a boom period for doll marketing, the choices were not easy. Dolls and teddy bears sold by Sears during this time were some of the most popular ever made and have become highly collectible today. This big book (192 pages) has selected Sears Christmas catalog pages from 1950 through 1969, divided by year. Featured are Barbie's introduction and such collectible dolls as Mme. Alexander, Tiny Tears, Miss Revlon, Chatty Cathy and hundreds more. A "Must Have" for anyone interested in dolls.

Some Sears Christmas "WISHBOOK" photos: 1950's-1960's .......2007-06-28
Just as the previous commnetator stated, this book does not contain all the SEARS Wishbook catalog photo from the 1950's-60's.
However, since I only purchased this VOLUME ONE, it could be that VOLUME TWO had more Sears catalog photos, ---those not shown in this Volume ONE.
I still enjoyed this book though, for it's historical value. As also stated by the previous commentator, this book is not really a DOLL & TEDDY BEAR Value book, but rather, it is more a book that compiles some of the 1000's of Sears catalog photos from their CHRISTMAS Catalog.
BEWARE.......2005-10-12
Having gotten your attention, I think this is a fun book BUT the buyer should be aware that it does not represent the complete pages of dolls in each year of the Sears catalogs. If you are doing research on vintage dolls, this book will not serve you well AT ALL. It lists only a few of the dolls pages from the catalog, and it isn't clear what method the author's used to decide which to include and which to exclude. On the other hand if you just want a book for a bit of nostalgia, it is indeed a fun look at dolls from yesteryear.
A must for 50's and 60's Doll Collectors.......2002-02-05
This book is AWESOME!!! I've had it for over a week now and haven't put it down. If you are a doll collector, this is definitely better than the other book "Girls Toys of the 50's and 60's" This book is primarilly all dolls, not kitchen sets, costumes, games, etc.! Although it is in black and white, the pictures are very clear and definitely help in identifying original dolls, outfits, and accessories. I'm going to also buy "Girls Toys of the 70's and 80's", but I wish they also had a DOLL ONLY book for that time period. Anyway, if you collect dolls from the 50's and 60's, this book is just GREAT!

Get inspired to stitch and hook! This collection of all-new quilts and coordinating hooked rugs comes from a team of talented sistersback with more of the signature folk-art style they shared in their first book, Folk Art Friends.

· Learn all you need to know about hooking rugs and stitching quiltscomplete how-tos are provided for both
Customer Reviews:
One book -- two crafts -- HOURS of fun.......2007-02-09
I LOVE books that have a dual purpose and EVERYDAY FOLK ART does just that! If you are a quilter, buy this book and make the quilt, then hook a rug to go along with it. And, remember the reverse, if you are a hooker, buy this book, hook a rug and then make the quilt to go along with it. Either way, you will learn a new technique. AND, if you already do both crafts, the book will keep you busy for many days and nights to come.
There are eight patterns that range from stars to animals to patriotic themes to game themes to a Log Cabin and finally an Irish Chain. The quilts are made by piecing alone or with piecing and appliqué. There is even a easy technique for making a Log Cabin (not the pattern but the actual Log Cabin) that uses "ragged" fabric. The rugs are hooked to match the themes of the quilts. You could even use up all those scraps you hate to throw away as a quilter and make a "scatter" rug --- one that is just a maze of colors.
Each quilt pattern has a materials list, cutting instructions and then instructions for putting the quilt together, along with graphics to help explain what you are suppose to do. If special templates are needed, they are also included. A full color photo of the finish quilt is provided. For each rug, the same things are provided as for the quilts.
There are tips in special colored boxes throughout the book and each author gives a brief overview about the pattern. The chapters at the end of the book include ten pages of basic quilting how-to's, 16 pages of basic rug hooking how-to's and a page of resources in case you cannot locate any of the supplies you might need to create these wonderful folk art pieces. This sister duo sure has a knack for fabric arts.
Folk Artists. . . extraordinaire!.......2005-04-27
Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson's new book Everyday Folk Art is why we just can't stop hooking and stitching! They have a way of sparking ideas from the everyday events - some things that might have passed us by as being ordinary. The constant fiber of life - family, friends, pets, country and home . . . stories - stitched and hooked - heart and hand - into heirlooms, that speak volumes about how valuable common everyday life really is. I love this book!

The Wool Street Journal
Book Description
This unique book is worth a second set of hands. It offers solo builders and do-it-yourselfers proven tips, techniques, and shortcuts for careful, precise, and safe construction.
There are many times when a helper would make a job easier, and in some cases doable at all, but with John Carroll's clever, expert tips, there's no need to wait for help. This book, the only one of its kind, offers ways to get by with not only one pair of hands but to work more efficiently as well. A perfect example is the problem of bringing a large sheet of plywood up a ladder. Even with a helper this is a difficult and dangerous task. But if a large C-clamp is fastened to one end of the plywood, it's easy to pull the sheet up the ladder from behind.
Professional builders and contractors who work alone or in small crews will find this book full of invaluable ways to keep the work moving, without costly delays or the need to hire additional helpers. Homeowners, who are often faced with working alone, will use these clever techniques to solve common problems safely.

Want to save time and frustration? The Practical Advice In This Book Will Show the Way.......2007-08-08
I just sold a used copy of this book on Amazon as a favor for a friend. Before I shipped it out, I decided to read it. Because of time, I had to skim parts of it, but I found this book full of excellent insights and ideas for tackling home building or renovation--and I scanned off several pages to save for my own personal use before packing it.
The book contains lots of practical advice for how to approach several different kinds of basic construction tasks. It also contains plans for some excellent tools that can be built with scrap from the construction site. Besides all this, the author gives some excellent suggestions for approaches or tools that are contrary to that used by the average person--and I can see how these alternate suggestions could really save time and frustration to anyone who takes his advice. I highly recommend this book.
I worked in the construction biz for a couple of years and a significant part of that time I was a one-man team (besides numerous personal projects), so I know the some of the challenges. More importantly, I have a dream to build my own home in a few years and I will probably have to buy another copy of this book before that time comes!
Make your work EASIER.......2007-06-14
This book is full of useful tips that can help even veteran carpenters become more efficient and productive. Along with John's other bookMeasuring, Marking, and Layout: A Builder's Guide it will provide you with simple techniques that just make the job go smoother and easier. A must read, for the apprentice on the job site.
Working Alone Review.......2007-06-08
"Working Alone" provides some very interesting and completely workable ideas for completing a project alone. It not only provided complete details of the process recommended, but also points out key planning steps prior to using the tip. It was worth the price.
some very handy hints.......2007-05-12
Even tho' I've worked alone on several projects I learned somethings from this book. A good buy.
Good stuff needed more.......2007-04-06
John Carroll's book working alone was a bit of a dissapointment in that I was expecting perhaps too much. When it arived I was expecting it to be a full sized book but instead it was a rather small 5 3/4" x 8 3/4" sized 148 page book. I personally thought that His other book Measuring, Marking & Layout was a better buy. If you work alone the tips and hints in this book could save you a lot of time & frustration.

Geometric Tolerancing.......2001-06-30
I bought this book to do some studying on my own. I bought this book because it said it was a workbook and figured I could spend a night or two and get up to speed, but there are no answers in the back, so I am rather disapointed. The text portion is good. It is a lot nicer reading than the official ANSI 14.5 book! I recommend the text portion, but the workbook portion is about useless without the answers. I see in the preface that there is a separately available teachers guide with the answers, so buy that one instead if you aren't in a classroom environment.
