A reader doesn't want to love every story in an anthology. A collection of short fiction by various authors should be just that: various. We want all the stories to be admirable, but not necessarily lovable. This is how anthologies do their job, which is to teach us to love new forms of fiction. And this is how Daniel Halpern, editor of The Art of the Story, does his job. Halpern previously brought us the successful and far-reaching collection The Art of the Tale. Now he has taken upon himself the task of creating an international sampling of the contemporary short story. Seventy-eight writers from 35 countries--including Banana Yoshimoto, Junot Díaz, Peter Hoeg, Julian Barnes, T.C. Boyle, Salman Rushdie, Peter Carey, Edwidge Danticat, and Tatyana Tolstaya--demonstrate that the story still brims with unrest and disharmony and, well, variousness. The classical form, the story that implies the world in a truncated scene or two, that implies a life in a single moment, is amply represented in this collection by writers like Ann Beattie ("In Amalfi") and Raymond Carver ("Are These Actual Miles?"). But the new story ranges farther than the personal, making inroads into the parodic, the fantastic, the speculative. As Halpern writes in the preface, "There seems to be a more investigative nature to the fiction of these stories written so close to the end of this century, a tendency, especially among writers from emerging nations, to use the story as a means of orientation, to restate for themselves their position--politically, socially, and artistically--as if for these writers there is radically less separation between reality and the imagination." Certainly this is an apt description of the fiction of Nigeria's Booker Prize winner Ben Okri ("In the Shadow of War") and of American newcomer Nathan Englander, whose "The Twenty-Seventh Man" describes the slaughter of Yiddish writers and contains the unforgettable dictate, "Never outlive your language." --Claire Dederer

Excellent textbook for writing course.......2004-01-26
I have been using this book for over a year now for the story writing course I tutor online. The very wide range and style of stories makes it ideal for this purpose and helps to stimulate discussion. I have also had very positive feedback from students: None regretted purchasing the book. The most popular story without a doubt proved to be Nicola Barker's "G-String". :)
There are some very strong showings here from Al-Shaykh, Margaret Atwood, T.C. Boyle, Olen Butler, Peter Carey, Lydia Davis, N. Englander, Richard Ford, Pawel Huelle, Edward P. Jones, C. McCann, Bobbie Ann Mason, Mary Morris, H. Murakami, Francine Prose, Salman Rushdie, Graham Swift, Tatyana Tolstaya, L. Valenzuela, Tobias Wolff ... and others.
A few stories made me scratch my head as to why they had been selected; but overall this is a challenging, diverse, high-voltage anthology. Even if you read short stories compulsively, you're bound to discover some new writers or rediscover a writer you thought you knew.
Superb sampling of short fiction.......2002-09-26
Gone are the days when a writer could earn a living publishing short stories in magazines because gone, too, are the days when most people read them. That's a shame, as this anthology demonstrates, because short fiction offers pleasures to the reader, and challenges to the writer, which are unavailable in longer forms. Like shots of liqueur, they can pack a mighty punch. "Short" doesn't mean a story can't be complex or moving, or can't address expansive themes. Indeed, that the better short stories achieve precisely those things is one measure of their greatness. Daniel Halpern's selections here prove it. His anthology not only gives hours of reading pleasure, but also provides an indispensable resource for aspiring writers: these stories display such an amazing range of themes, styles and narrative structures, they make it a veritable showcase of approaches to storytelling. For the student of literature, they offer condensed examples of how writers do their work. Of course, not everything can appeal in a volume of this size, but for me there were some highpoints: "Dharma", a moving ghost story by Vikram Chandra; the cleverly historical "The Green Man" by Jeanette Winterson; the almost casually powerful "Talking Dog" by Francine Prose; "Midnight and I'm Not Famous Yet", a Vietnam memoir by Barry Hannah; "Everything in This Country Must", a child's perspective on Northern Ireland, by Colum McCann; "The Girl Who Left Her Sock on the Floor" by Deborah Eisenberg and "The Lifeguard" by Mary Morris, both of which deal with death and adolescence; the immensely moving "Evermore" by Julian Barnes; the domestic suspense of "A Family Dinner" by Kazuo Ishiguro; and the heartbreaking lament of "Intimacy" by Hanif Kureishi - which, I assume, is the seed which grew into his novel of the same name. Ironically, Kureishi's story shows precisely what can be achieved in the short form: for my money, it's better than his novel.
Short and Sweet.......2001-04-17
Although I have yet to read all of the stories in this book, I'm sure that someday I will. I bought this book for a college literature course and plan on saving it for rainy days. The stories in this book come from writers at home and abroad, complete with a wide range of topics, some that are seen in everyday life and others that include the perils of war and May/December relationships (Aren't You Happy for Me- my personal fave). I gave this book four stars because some of the stories I found dry in content. But I think that there are enough topics to cover a wide range of enjoyment for all readers. Enjoy!
a worthy companion.......2001-03-17
i checked this out of the libary and both my husband and i have thoroughly ravaged its pages. i carried it about a month; he carried it for another. we incurred almost more overdue fines than the book (hardcover) cost. we liked it so much we are purchasing it to bring back home to new york. the selection is insightful and appreciated, and if any thread unites the stories it is that they succeed as the best writing ought -- in acting as instant portals/transporters to another time, place, world, of life or ideas, psychology or thought. i read a lot of (mostly american) short stories and literary magazines, but this anthology truly had at least 3 of the best stories i've ever read. also, i appreciated that these stories were not just personal sketches of ethic/outsider subjectivity or sex born of the blandness of suburbia or alienation of the city, etc.: the author steps aside, the story tells itself. the stories are artful, masterly, probably the epitome of each writer's writing career (they read like those gems, with a few exceptions). you feel this in the reading. word by word, the stories unfold, unravel, draw you magnetically down the line of prose and make you lean back at the end of a story and marvel that you're still sitting where you were how many minutes ago? and it was only 3 pages? let me read that again. truly successful writing; truly well-selected anthology. buy it.

Book Description
From Laura Lippman, one of the most critically acclaimed crime fiction writers today, comes an intriguing new tale of mystery and suspense with everyone's favorite P.I., Tess Monaghan. This time Tess is involved in a frightening investigation that will make her question her loyalties and threaten those she holds most dear. . . .
No Good Deeds
For Tess Monaghan, the unsolved murder of a young federal prosecutor is nothing more than a theoretical problem, one of several cases to be deconstructed in her new gig as a consultant to the local newspaper. But it becomes all too tangible when her boyfriend brings home a young street kid who doesn't even realize he holds an important key to the man's death. Tess agrees to protect the boy's identity no matter what, especially when one of his friends is killed in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity. But with federal agents determined to learn the boy's name at any cost, Tess finds out just how far even official authorities will go to get what they want. Soon she's facing felony charges -- and her boyfriend, Crow, has gone into hiding with his young protégé, so Tess can't deliver the kid to investigators even if she wants to. Time and time again Tess is reminded of her father's old joke, the one about the most terrifying sentence in the English language: "We're from the government -- and we're here to help."

No Good Deeds by Laura Lippman.......2007-07-10
In Lippman's latest installment of the Tess Monaghan series, Tess has taken on a new gig as consultant to the local newspaper, where her job duties are to train reporters in investigative techniques, using three recent cases as paradigms. One of the cases Tess plans to focus on is the murder of a local federal prosecutor. When Tess's significant other, Crowe, befriends a homeless street kid, Tess inadvertently learns the young man has information about who killed the prosecutor. In an effort to inform the authorities without identifying her source, Tess sets up an interview between the young man and a reporter. Although she promises Crowe she will do everything she can to protect the young man's identity, federal agents insist she reveal her source. When Tess doesn't cooperate, they begin to threaten her family and hint at filing felony charges against her. Crowe goes into hiding with the young man, unaware that two federal agents have honed in and are after them, not to bring them in but to kill them.
The Tess Monaghan series remains a constant bestseller in PI series to date. Tess is a strong character, a young woman with an edge. To counterbalance her cynicism is her mate, laidback and amiable Crowe. Lippman excels at characterization, and with No Good Deeds allows the reader a deeper look into Crowe's persona and background. And, as always, spending time with Tess is a bonus. This must-read moves at a fast pace and has plenty of interesting characters.
No Good Deeds.......2007-05-07
I will try to read more of her only because it took me
3 chapters to figure out who did what. Will never be a PD James.
Ghetto blasting.......2007-04-17
When PI Tess Monoghan and her boyfriend, Crow befriend (a little unwillingly on Tess's part) Lloyd, a tough, black teenager from the ghettos of Baltimore, they put in motion a series of events which are connected with murder, drug dealing and extortion by people who should know better. Lloyd is living on the streets in a hand to mouth fashion, getting money for food from begging, scams and from skirting around the edges of a criminal element which uses young boys to do their dirty work. When the body of Federal Attorney, Gregory Youssef is found, Agents begin digging to find connections with drug dealers and Lloyd clearly is frightened by the name of Youssef, even though he claims never to have met him. Tess, Crow and their families are threatened when crooked Federal agents try to locate Lloyd and so are forced to go into hiding and to call in favours from family and friends, to remain alive. It's an exciting, pacy read which fans of Tess Monoghan will thoroughly enjoy.
Good, but not great.......2007-04-08
This is the third Tess Monaghan novel I've read and I don't think it compares well with Ms. Lippman's earlier work. Crow is an annoying character. It is hard to understand how Tess even tolerates him. While reading it I kept thinking how two-dimensional he is. A 1960s hippie-wannabe who doesn't seem to understand how the world works. It also bothered me that by the end of the book there were still a couple of unresolved plot twists. Ms. Lippman is an excellent writer and her style and pacing kept me interested enough to move through the book in a single sitting. Because of her writing ability I'm looking forward to reading her latest novel, "What the Dead Know." At least I know I won't have to put up with Crow in that one. (It is a stand alone book, not part of the Monaghan series.
No More Crow, Please!.......2007-04-04
I think Laura Lippman is a terrific writer, and I love Tess and this entire series. However, the one character I've never been able to stand is Crow, so I didn't really enjoy a book that was mostly about him.
I thought it was out of character for Tess to not question Crow about all his money via the disposable cellphone, and moreso to not be upset to find out he'd been keeping it from her considering her own financial problems. I also couldn't understand why she'd be putting herself and her family at so much risk for someone she didn't even know (who tried to take advantage of her) and a guy she was slowly finding out she barely knew and might not be able to trust.
As with all her books, this one was well-written and hard to put down. I just wish I didn't have to suffer through the annoying Crow to enjoy it.

Does your child crave cookies, ice cream, candy, and sodas? He or she may be suffering from carbohydrate addiction: "a compelling hunger, craving or desire for carbohydrate-rich foods; an escalating, recurring need or drive for starches, snack foods, junk food, sweets." In Carbohydrate Addicted Kids, Richard and Rachael Heller, authors of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, have developed a program specifically for children and teens to free them from their dependence on carbohydrates and improve their attitude, weight, learning, and self-esteem. Rachael Keller's own moving story--enduring ridicule and loneliness because of her weight, and topping 300 pounds by age 17--draws the reader in. Not until age 36 did she discover that her dieting (including sugar-filled meal-replacement drinks and juice fasts) only made her crave sweets more, and that limiting her carbohydrate intake made the cravings disappear. She dropped 165 pounds by eating high-protein breakfasts and lunches, salads and vegetables, and balanced dinners.
The Kellers explain how to figure out if your child is addicted to carbohydrates, and, if so, what type (locust, rabbit, bear, sponge, or fruit bat). Since one size doesn't fit all, they present two different programs--"Step-by-Step" and "Jump-Start"--each with many variations. Recipes are included. --Joan Price
Book Description
Something's Eating Your Child. It Could Be Junk Food.
Does your kid grab food on the run? Does it seem as if your youngster could live on pizza and fries while guzzling juice and soda? Your child or teen may be carbohydrate addicted and suffer from a chemical imbalance that can lead to weight gain, mood swings, hyperactivity, even learning and behavior problems. Junk food, sweets, and even healthy high-carbo, low-fat foods can wreak havoc on insulin and blood-sugar levels--imbalances that lie at the heart of these problems.
Drawing on more than a decade of research, Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller, authors of the bestselling The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, have helped more than a million people break free of the addiction to carbohydrates. In Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids, these renowned researchers present parents with two struggle-free alternatives: an easy Step-By-Step Plan as well as a quick, Jump-Start Plan. Each plan corrects the root cause of the carbohydrate cravings and is especially designed with kids and teens in mind. As their insulin and blood-sugar levels become balanced, youngsters are free to enjoy a wide variety of foods, and mood, behavior, and learning problems literally disappear.
Help your child break free of carbo cravings, sugar highs, and sugar lows--without deprivation--for life.

Hard to follow.......2007-01-16
This book was hard to follow. It does have some good points.
Different from the others.......2005-08-03
I was surprised at the different plan laid out for kids. It definitely is a lot easier for them to follow and slowly work into than the more serious, but successful, plan for adults in their other books. Even if your child is borderline overweight and you just want to know how to fix them better snacks, etc. than this has some great info.
best diet ever.......2004-07-10
(...) this is the best diet I have ever been on. After only one night I lost 5 pounds and it isn't hard to follow. I reccomend this book to everybody.
I love this book!.......2003-02-20
I love this diet plan so much! As a carb addicted teen it's helped me to lose weight and feel better. I've lost 10 pounds already on this diet. The plan is so easy to follow and I don't get junk food cravings any more. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has struggled with weight and food cravings.
This Book Can Save Your Child's Life.......2002-05-31
I ordered and read the adult version of this book. Within one week I ordered and read this book knowing that in I would find the answers to my daughter's diet problems. She has been following the program for only 5 days and has already experienced a dramatic drop in cravings. Her behavior and attention has never been better. She has also lost a pound already. I turned to this program as a solution for my weight but have found so much more. Never before had I been relieved of my obsession for sweets and breads. This program did just that for both of us! If you think you may need it you probably do. Just read the book. It explains it all. Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss this further.

Customer Reviews:
Learning is an adventure, not a standard tour.......2002-04-02
This is a really inspirational book, but it's not for those who think learning is doing exactly what teacher tells you. Jim Faraone shows his readers what can be achieved, and gives a run-down of tips and techniques, but mostly he allows the work of artists of all ages, nationalities and styles to inspire dreams and ambitions. Jim treasures the individuality and daring of the doll artist and his books help those who dream to dare. How do you "learn from the artists"? By looking at their work and by letting your own curiosity and talent take over, not by following step-by-step directions to a 'creative project' that looks just like everyone else's. The books are treasure troves of inspiration, and worth a place on any doll-lover's bookshelf. Thanks, Jim!
Beautiful dolls and great tips and tricks to create your own.......2001-08-16
That is what you will find in the latest edition of Jim Faraone's 4th Fashion Doll makeovers. The book is filled with beautiful shots of fashion doll makeovers, bios of the artists and best of all, in the back, tips and tricks on how to do some of the things pictured. Enhancing molded hair creations, beaded hair, create a molded mohawk style, the making of fairy wings, fabric wings, appliques and gloves are all explained with clear, step by step pictures. This book is a fine addition to the series. With each book you can learn more and more about creating your own makeovers. The information is also helpful if you just want to make presentable all those poor dolls that your daughter decided to give a hair cut to.
If you aren't into making over your own dolls you can still enjoy the pictures of the beautiful dolls created by some truly talented artists.
Good inspiration.......2001-08-01
Great if you need inspiration but it's short on how tos. Some of the artists featured here have created true masterpieces. I just wish there was more on how to create your own.
A great starter book for fashion doll customizers.......2001-01-25
I wasn't sure what to think of this book; I'd seen good reviews and bad ones. Ultimately this purchase was a leap of faith, and I'm glad I jumped. While this is not primarily a how-to volume, there is a good, basic starter section in the back which shows how to re-root and style hair, do basic face paints, construct accessories such as hats, purses and jewelry.
If you're looking for a project-based book, this sure isn't it, and you'll be bitterly disappointed by the fact that the bulk of the book is made up of photos of and information about the work of other doll customizers. However, if you're looking for inspiration along with enough information to get started on your own, then this is absolutely the book for you. It's a book to set you dreaming about what that $2.99 sale Barbie could look like with a little (or a lot) of work. It's a book that can provoke you to have fun as well as take on a lot of hard work.
Most of all, it's not going to lead you through cookie-cutter projects. If you want a doll that looks just like dozens of other dolls, stick with what's in the box. But if you want to think, to create something truly one-of-a-kind, then give this book a shot.
Lacking in the How-To Department.......2000-12-22
This book has great pictures, but is it seriously lacking in the how-to department. There is one small chapter on how-tos, however, the rest of the book showcases the creations of various fashion doll customizers. If you are not looking for much on the how-tos of fashion doll customizing and you want to look at pretty pictures and get some ideas, this book is for you. If you are looking for a book heavy on the how-to of fashion doll customizing, this is not the book for you. What little information that is in the book and more, can be found on the internet if you are willing to do the research. Trust me, I found it.

disappointed.......2006-04-06
I ordered this book in the hopes that published patterns (as opposed to those patterns posted by random people on the internet) would be more accurate and less mistake-ridden. However, I was disappointed. Both patterns I have tried so far from this book have had multiple mistakes in them. Some of these mistakes were immediately obvious to me and fairly easy to correct while others were harder to spot and resulted in wasted stitches and wasted time. On a more positive note, this book has photographs for all the patterns and it is sometimes possible to recreate the pattern relying solely on the pictures. On the whole, I was expecting much more from Anne Orr, a highly esteemed chrochet artist with an impressive reputation. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Lovely old crochet designs........2000-07-17
Crocheting With Anne Orr is a Dover publications reprint. The patterns were first published between 1932 and 1948. The book contains lovely thread designs for bedspreads, tablecloths, collars, edgings, doilies, and other accessories. Crocheters at all skill levels can enjoy this book. Designs include a very simple design "Lacy Doily" to a very elaborate design "Irish Rose Bedspread". The patterns are old but can easily be used in our home decorating today. The patterns for edgings with fringes and tassels are very popular now and quite expensive to purchase ready made.
Book Description
The architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson believes that “the sensuality of place, the emotive qualities of materials, and the ability to give pleasure and insight, to comfort and to transport can produce humane and spirited architecture.” Whether designing corporate headquarters for Pixar Animation Studios, the Software Engineering Institute for Carnegie Mellon University, the new Apple Stores in New York, Chicago, and Tokyo, or the twelve wooded retreats shown in this book, the firm’s architecture is alive to the subtleties of place, man-made or natural, and to the rich possibilities of materials and the means of construction.
The houses in Arcadian Architecture are exquisitely crafted of wood and stone and other natural materials, and are all sited within beautiful wooded, mountainous, or lakeside locales, from New York State to Washington State, and from the woods of Connecticut to the mountains of Montana. One of the highlights of this book is that it publishes, for the first time, the extraordinary, huge, extremely private and secluded, residential complex in Washington State that was built for Bill and Melinda Gates. Each house is presented on at least thirty pages, and is depicted by sumptuous new color photography, richly detailed conceptual sketches, presentation drawings, and construction documents.

Arcadian Architecture: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson-12 Houses.......2007-01-09
It is a very nice book and one that my son wants very much to add to his liabrary as he is studying architecture. The book seems to be coming apart, only strings are holding it togehter. It looks like the glue has pulled apart where we have started looking at the book.
Arcadian splendor.......2006-09-08
Bohlin Cywinski Jackson have a long illustrious history stemming from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Seattle, Washington. As such, this beautiful collection of twelve "arcadian" homes represent the tip of the iceberg of their collective work. In these immaculate residences you will find their signature details, many of them by James Cutler, who worked with Peter Bohlin on the Gates Residence and other projects. You will marvel at the romanticism of the Adirondack Retreat on Lake George, New York, with its granite boulder fireplace and natural cedar and fir interiors. Then there is the Endless Mountain House, located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, with its projected balconies atop crumbling fieldstone walls with a towering chimney anchoring one end of this evocative residence. The house appears as though it were built over ancient ruins. Nestled within these idyllic residential projects is the Pacific Rim Estate, co-authored by Bohlin and Cutler for Bill Gates on Lake Washington, near Seattle. It is a stunning work, not so much in its assemblage as in its marvelous kit of parts, from a barrel-vaulted garage buried into the wooded landscape to the beautiful timber connections in the main body of the residential complex. Here we see brute concrete and heavy timber blended naturally into the landscape, making for a surprisingly unassuming compound that incorporated many sustainable design features, including recycled heavy timber posts and beams.
Stunning Hardcover on Top Architect.......2006-06-30
This is one of the most well crafted books on a single architect. The scale and quality of the photographs, the packaging, it is the best gift you can offer to someone who has a passion for materials and detail.

A book of equal quality to the firm's body of work........2005-06-21
I won't bore you with what an excellent firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson is, their 250 architectural design awards are evidence of the quality of the body of their work. I instead would like to review the quality of this publication. In over thirty years of architectural practice and school I don't know if I have seen a better constructed book. The contributions by Peter Bohlin and James Cutler as well as the introduction by Thomas Fisher frame the twelve houses is such a way as to clear understanding of the design and construction process that make these projects worth serious study. It is seldom that I open a book for the first time and fell such "WOW" at the quality of its content and construction of the book. It is a work of art in my opinion. Oscar Riera Ojeda has done an excellent job as editor of this work.

Book Description
Kiki Smith has long reflected on what it means to be human, to be a woman. Her famous body sculptures, both whole and part reproductions of the human body, made of paper, wax, plaster, ceramics, and bronze, often reduced that experience to natural functions and external violence. This book presents new sculptures, drawings, and room installations, in a broadened range of topics and materials, including glass, that cover the entire macrocosm of human and animal life, nature and the stars.

Book Description
"He always is very, very close to the camera, and he is terribly inspiring. I don't know what his magic is, but it is something that makes you want to give everything you have. He has respect for actors and for everybody. A bad director very often doesn't have that respect." Liv Ullman's words about Ingmar Bergman hint at the consummate director he was, one who knew the business, the strengths and weaknesses of actors and crews, the arrangement of the set, the framing of the camera, and all other particulars of the fine art of directing. This work presents Bergman's life and work, beginning with his youth in Uppsala, Sweden, and covering his formative years, his development as an artist, and his career as a world-renowned director. A brief synopsis for each of Bergman's films is provided, with such information as producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, editor, art director, music sound credits, running time, casts, Bergman's own comments, and the reactions of critics
