Christopher Isherwood was a diverse writer whose accomplishments included The Mortmere Stories (Edward Upward Series), A Single Man and a translation of The Song of God (Bhagavad Gita). But many critics hailed The Berlin Stories, the reissue of two of his best novels, as his finest. In the book, a man named Christopher Isherwood, who is and is not the author, writes a story of exile, combining the best of Isherwood's real life with the best of the life he imagined.
Customer Reviews:
"Even now I can't altogether believe that any of this has really happened.".......2007-05-17
Christopher Isherwood's "Berlin Stories" is perhaps most famous for having inspired the stage and screen masterpiece Cabaret, but those who are looking for an exact match between the two will be disappointed. The divine Sally Bowles does make an appearance (her charisma and verve are the book's high point), but only briefly, and her story only contains only seeds of what would become Cabaret's plotline. The primary similarities between the musical and its source material lie in the characterization of the aforementioned wannabe diva (who is every bit as vibrant on the page as she is in performance), as well as in the central themes and setting.
Berlin, 1930 - 1933: a city caught helplessly in an inexorable rush toward history as warring political factions fight for control and the Nazi party begins its rise to power. Violence and danger lurk in every street, and yet life goes on for the citizens of Berlin - who struggle to keep a degree of normalcy in their lives and food on their tables. They desperately cling to their traditional way of life as Germany's bloodthirsty future in WWII becomes more and more a nightmarish present. They are utterly unprepared for what lies ahead for them and their beloved nation. Could they have stopped Hitler? Almost certainly, if only they had taken the threat seriously. And therein lies the tragedy at the heart of Isherwood's masterpiece: that while it may be human nature to bury your head in the sand and hope for the best when trouble comes knocking, doing so will make you a passive co-conspirator and only allow the worst-case-scenario become a fully realized reality.
"The Berlin Stories" consists of two novellas that have been published together. "The Last of Mr. Norris" delves into the failure of Germany's communist party and, through the character of Mr. Norris, shows us the war profiteer at its worst. Norris doesn't care who ends up in power or what they do to Germany so long as he can use them to turn a profit and maintain his lavish lifestyle. The one complaint I have about it is that William Bradshaw's immediate friendship with the shifty Mr. Norris requires a suspension of disbelief on the reader's part. Why would he so readily trust Norris when his every instinct reveals him to be a charlatan and a swindler? Perhaps we are meant to see in William's willingness to trust Norris the larger concept that Germans eventually embraced Hitler despite their better instincts, but if that was Isherwood's intention it is a little too vague. "Goodbye to Berlin" is a series of vignettes with a writer named Isherwood (!) as its central character. The vignettes begin when it was still possible to hope for the best, and end in a cloud of violence as Isherwood is forced to leave Berlin, his once-and-still beloved city, in 1933.
"The Berlin Stories" is, ultimately, an elegy for the lost Germany that Isherwood had once fallen in love with, and the reader will be hard pressed not to mourn with him as the once vibrant city of Berlin descends into chaos and bloodshed. What is truly terrifying is that it actually happened, and it is incumbent upon us to make sure that it never happens again.
Grade: A
Interesting look at pre-war Berlin.......2007-01-31
While nowhere near as fleshed out as "Cabaret"--the film that was constructed from this and "I am a Camera," THE BERLIN STORIES are still great entertainment and a valuable look into pre-war Berlin and Germany.
Isherwood brings to life the squalid conditions and the "many families in one place" atmosphere that adds to the gloom and doom, and also the human interactions that makeup these stories.
If you're planning to delve into the land of Christopher Isherwood, I highly suggest this writing of his, along with his wonderful, though extremely extensive autobiographies. Great fodder about Stravinsky, Los Angeles, Arthur Kallman, and a host of others around the "LA roundtable" that is also a time capsule of an era we will never see again.
Welcome to Berlin.......2006-11-02
Forget all about Mr. Norris. He might have changed trains, but he never takes off. Goodbye to Berlin on the other hand is wonderful. Modernism at its best. Isherwood watches, as a bystander, how the roaring twenties Berlin slowly decays and how the Nazis are creeping out of their holes and take over public spaces.
Berlin Berlin.......2005-12-24
Guess what this book is about? Paris? Correct! Really? No, not really! This compelling collection of stories, narrated by Isherwood, recreates the glamour and drudgery of Berlin. The reader is invited to enter into a world filled with colorful characters, like the irrepressible Sally Bowles and seductive Otto. For all those who shun history textbooks, "Berlin Stories" is a wonderful way to get acquainted with the politics of Berlin in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
The eccentric characters within this book add to its many layers. I personally love the character Sally Bowles. As "The New Woman," Sally epitomizes the attempt by women to adopt a style of comportment based on an idea about what "The New Woman" was like instead of "who" she actually was.
Christopher Isherwood has a way with words and can wrap a story around you so that when you look to the beginning, you are already in the middle.
References to Weimar Germany and the encroaching Nazi Germany will have you on the edge of your seat. This book is perfect for literary buffs or anyone who loves an engaging story.
Weimar's Characters.......2005-12-17
Every reader seeks some form of entertainment or enlightenment. Whether it is the newest romance novel or the most cutting edge work of science the reader expects to finish a printed work with a sense of fulfillment. Christopher Isherwood more than fulfills his assigned role as entertainer in his work The Berlin Stories. Using the setting of Weimar Berlin he weaves a tale of hope, heartache, and tragedy. However, Berlin Stories is not a novel about Weimar German culture, it is a novel about humans interacting and conflicting with their environment. Isherwood's work is not brilliant as a historical work; it is a brilliant character study not seen in literature of its time. The reserve that the author shows in narrating what the person says, and what he or she does allows the reader to step into the story and analyze the characters that Isherwood sees for ourselves.
Isherwood's characters are magical and memorable. Sally Bowles and her eternal search for fame and fortune, Natalia and her naive ways, and the confused Fräulein Schroeder, and many others show us the height of the author's art. He has taken the people he has known and loved and eternalized them without any damnation. Isherwood's world is a world of decadence and tenderness, heartlessness and love. All of these qualities make The Berlin Stories a fundamental work of fiction, and an easy read.

Takes a lot of patients to read this book.......2005-06-22
After a couple of false starts I was able to finally finish this book. I read it because I had seen "Cabaret" the movie and the play. I have not seen the play "I am a Camera" by Erik Von Deutten. However I expected a faster moving story and really had to drudge through this. There are moments that you can identify with. However for the most part you feel like a third party. You may not want to identify with some of the characters.
Whatever is supposed to make this book good is lost in the details. Be sure to look at the Amazon inside samples and actually try reading them.
Well I read it but I am not sure I want to read anymore of his book. I feel a little cheated when one describes his use of English and the book is over before you find this. I feel a little embarrassed at not liking it with the praise it receives, but I guess you can not like them all.
Book Description
It's 1979, the height of the post-Stonewall era of gay sexual liberation, and a young man has been brutally murdered. The gay son of a wealthy family has disappeared. Now it's up to private dick Don Strachey to get to the bottom of this mess--even if he has to cruise every gay bar in the city to do it!
Don Strachey isn't exactly the most sought-after private eye in Albany, New York. In fact, this gay P.I. has gotten to the point of having to write checks to pay his tab at the cheapest lunch counter in town. And he isn't sure that the latest one, for the grand total of two dollars and ninety-three cents, is going to clear. Then the phone rings. Billy Blount, the gay heir to one of Saratoga Springs' upper-crust families, has disappeared, and his parents want him back. On top of that, Billy, a young and outspoken gay activist, is wanted for the grizzly murder of the man he slept with on his last night in Albany--a man he'd never met before that night!
Set in the glorious, promiscuous pre-HIV late 1970s, Death Trick is a fast-paced excursion through the seamy underside of gay Albany. From gay discos where the hard-pumping music never stops, to the city's infamous baths, to the dark alley behind the local precinct house, this hard-bitten private dick searches for answers to the questions that plague Billy's parents and the police.
With his faithful companion (and unfaithful lover) Timmy plus a cast of characters that includes drag queens, ex-jock gay bar owners, homophobic cops, male hustlers, and wealthy suburbanites, Strachey begins a chase that leads him to seedy gay bars, posh suburban homes, and pricey mental institutions where they use electric shock to destroy "sick" gay tendencies.
Armistead Maupin describes Death Trick as "sassy and sexy" and calls Don Strachey, "a private dick who really earns his title." The New York Native calls the novel, "more than just a first-rate murder mystery." The Advocate said, "a great lazy-day read." And Newsday called the book, "well written and compelling."
Don't you owe it to yourself to take this trick home tonight?
Customer Reviews:
A very unique work that hits close to home........2007-03-24
I have been searching for a book series like this one for quite a while. I say this for several reasons. First, as a gay man, I am always looking for literature that connects me to who I am as an indiviual. Secondly, I am also a gay private investigator; an apprentice in college, but an investigator. Finding a fictional mystery series that relates to my human side, and connects me with the career I have chosen has been hard, but I have very quickly found admiration for this series and Mr. Stevenson. In fact, in high school, I wrote my own fictional novel about a gay private investigator. I have yet to get the novel published; which I hoped to turn into a series. Mr. Stevenson's series may give me hope for that.
I whole heartedly recommend this series to anyone. The characters are intriguing, with features that attach you to them fairly quickly on; and the plots are sound and thrilling.
A witty mystery.......2004-02-26
The year is 1979 and Don Strachey is hired by a wealthy couple to find their son Billy. Billy is wanted for murder, and since both he and Strachey are gay, the detective must have some ideas as to where the young man has fled. Of course, because all gays know each other, right? Soon Strachey is drawn into a complex puzzle as he becomes determined to prove Billy's innocence. Now if he could just find the young man before it's too late. In this lively mystery, Stevenson introduces his plucky detective and spins a great tale that belies the social commentary contained within. "Death Trick" is not only a great example of the mystery genre, but also a compelling slice of gay literary history.
The gay storyline blends well with the telling of the events.......1998-04-30
around a murder. I like the angst that Donald feels when he becomes involved with a central figure in his case. The patronizing parents are a good, but overdone touch. In all, it is a pleasant read.
A fast-paced, witty, gay who-dunnit........1997-08-07
In the series opener Albany P.I. Donald Strachey takes on a sensational murder case within the gay community--which just happens to be right up his own alley.
The underappreciated Stevenson writes a clever mystery made memorable by his portrait of gay life from over a decade ago (remember bath houses?). Appealing, believable characters (Timothy Callahan, Strachey's Jesuit-educated lover, is a creative gem), and a wicked sense of humor lift this novel "straight" out of the genre category

Three cheery dragon tales perfect for the holiday.......2005-12-22
In most of literature dragons are creatures to be feared- fire and destruction made manifest. In other stories, they're beasts of burden, used for their wings to take us into the skies. However, in these stories, the dragons are as multi-dimensional as humans. They have the full range of emotions, of hopes, of fears, of quirks, and the full range of Christmas Spirit. That is what further sets this book apart, is not only do dragons star in this book, but the three well written stories are all centered around Christmas.
The Knight, Before Christmas by Jeff Grubb is a brilliant retelling of the Night Before Christmas with a delightful twist ending that's sure to bring a smile to your face.
The Christmas Dragon is a beautiful story of man and nature, set in cold mountains with humans and dragons staring. Over all, it's well done and an interesting view. It reminds me more than a little of The Grinch.
Wrathclaw's Wyrmtide by Ed Greenwood is about redemption, and is very analogous to A Christmas Carol, and is my favorite of the book. The characters are detailed, and the ending is brilliant.
I recommend this highly to readers of all ages. It is a perfect holiday book for those of us who like fantasy, or someone who just wants a holiday story that's a little different than normal.
Customer Reviews:
Not enough detail.......2007-10-11
Informative on a general level. The problem I've found with these Howdunit series is that they don't go into enough detail for me. For instance with strangulation I want to know how long it takes the victim to die. What exactly happens in a physiologic way? What are the differences between women or children strangling a man or woman? And vice versa. How about repeated throttling as say in SM? How do I write about what the victim is feeling, what the murderer feels. Yes, hand marks on the neck indicate strangulation by a person and a 'Y' shape means hanging. But this is not nearly enough information to put into the death scene. I want my detective to beable to get into the minds of the murderer and the victim.
A lively guide to death.......2004-01-21
This book is an excellent resource for writers who want to imbue their stories with the authentic details of unnatural death but don't really have all the tools and training of a full-time medical examiner. In my case, as a crime author, the text was an invaluable reference, putting some highly technical material into easily digested context. Recommended for writers of all kinds who need a good reference work on the myriad ways to die.
Good information, bad writing.......2002-09-19
This is part of the Writer's Digest "Howdunnit" series--aids for the mystery writer when constructing a story. There's a lot of great information here, from the description of how an emergency room is arranged and operated, to the same for an autoposy, to numbers for ways in which people die by suicide, homicide and accidents. Wilson uses some quotes from books--mystery and otherwise--to illustrate his sections. I can't say much for his choice of quotes, especially this one from Robin Cook's Mortal Fear:
"Glancing up at the monitor, which still showed normal ECG activity, Jason touched Cedric's neck. He could feel no pulse.
'Let me have a cardiac needle,' he demanded. 'And someone get a blood pressure.' A large cardiac needle was thrust into his hand as he palpated Cedric's chest to locate the ridge of the sternum."
I imagine that it might be difficult to continue to work after someone thrust a huge needle into your hand, eh? Such wonderful writing to be used as a model for would-be authors. I also noticed that Wilson is in love with the M.D. designation following his name. His name never appears in the book without it. From the use of quotes from his own published novels, and from the fiction that he created from this book, its obvious that the M.D. never helped his fiction writing any, other than provide him the information that makes up this book. Maybe it did help him understand the material presented here; at least enough to present it in a clear and readable manner. I plan to go on and check out the other books in this series, but I hope the other authors are better fiction writers than this guy.
Wow...........2001-09-01
This is one of the best books in the howdunit series...It is a very good book for people just starting to learn about forensics. It is very detailed in many differnet areas including: medical and leagal procedures, how to deterimin time of death, autopsy, differnt methods of death, capital punishment, and of course, causes of death. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in crime scene investigation, or forensics, police work, ect. Happy reading!
Good reference for writers........2001-08-17
If you're planning on writing a suspensful novel and are unsure of whom to turn to in order to obtain information on forensic medicine, then this book is a useful resource. This can help you write clues for the detective in your novel to follow in the search for answers. Scientific terms are explained, so it is a great book to read.

a solid good cookbook for those aspiring to the vegan diet. the only drawbacks being that some recipies require hard-to-locate ingredients such as vegan gelatin and smoked yeast. Other than that a very worthwhile purchase for those wishing to eat healthy, etc.

Book Description
Finally comes a book that grapples with the complex realities of the housing crisis in the United States. Architect Donald MacDonald provides an astute critique of the various approaches to postwar housing, and then puts forth a number of his own innovative, prototypical solutions to the problem. MacDonald's proposal for democratic architecture are based on four principles: that every human being has a right to an affordable home; that people should be able to manipulate their residential environments, for expanding and dividing spaces to changing facades easily and inexpensively; that in deciding where and how to construct housing every effort be made to prevent damage to the environment; and last, that residential design must express the multiplicity of society, not some ideal or political ideology. Many of his proposals are practical designs for low- and lower-middle-income housing, with an emphasis on increasing opportunities for home ownership. They include a variety of detached homes, multiunit buildings, and some alternative types of housing for people whose lifestyles diverge from the mainstream. Here you will find tested, workable schemes - not pipe dreams - that go a long way in addressing the housing crisis. Written in an engaging, straightforward style, Democratic Architecture is required reading for urban planners, policymakers, and social scientists - as well as architecture and design professionals.

In this book, everything is in the pictures and the floorplans that can give you numerous original ideas if you plan to build a town house.
Text is very limited though as are techincal informations.
Interesting look at all the different types of cities and the houses that exists within them.......2006-02-07
This book features the many different types of houses that exist in the many different cities throughout the world. As broad as the range of houses that are featured in this book, so too are the conditions of each cityscape that it is built on. It is interesting how the term "city houses" evokes an image of a dwelling squeezed into a dense urban plot, but that is not always the case. Some houses in cities such as San Francisco or Vienna seem to enjoy a space that is only possible in a suburban context. Despite all the differences of the houses featured, they all deal with the issue of privacy and fitting in or out of the urban context that exists already.
Some of the more interesting projects include House H by Sugiura Office and House in Rue Galvani by Christian Pottgiesser.

A colorful look at yesterday's houses of tomorrow........2002-03-26
This is a super photo book of the best streamline houses built in England in the thirties and still standing. Photographer Nick Dawe has captured sixty-five of them and he makes them sparkle in the sunshine, some interiors shots are included as well. Author Kenneth Powell provides short essays to the four chapters and captions to each set of house photos.
Good as the book is I only gave it four stars because I felt it was let down by the sloppy minimalist design. Of the sixty-five houses shown only fifteen have floor plans (beautifully redrawn by James Taylor) and strangely these are placed in three sections of the book rather than be placed on the same page as the relevant house photo. Bizarrely the eighteen pages of plans do not have page numbers, should the reader really have to flick backwards and forwards to find the house and then the plan (if there is one!) There are nineteen spreads that have one large photo and again no page numbers. Call me old fashioned but I prefer to have numbers printed on each page, every other book has them and they work, too.
Some of the house interior photos seem rather obscure and not helped because there are no captions to them.
So apart from the silly annoying design I found this book worth having. A similar book of streamline houses, this time in the US, is James and Katherine Ford's 'Classic Modern Homes of the Thirties', a reprint of a 1940 book with photos and plans of houses designed by Schindler, Ain, Neutra, Gropius, Breuer and others. It has 194 photos and 128 plans and details about each house. Oh, and it has a number on each page too!

Book Description
A finalist for the prestigious Ralph J. Gleason Book Award for excellence in books on music, the author's revealing biography of her father and his legendary career presents a very personal look at the remarkable Bob Wills.
Together with a first-time, inside look at the star's offstage life, the book offers "a treasure trove of rare photos," raves The Austin American-Statesman. Career milestones covered include Wills's gold record for "San Antonio Rose"; his induction into the Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame; and his being named by Life magazine one of the most important people in country music history.
Customer Reviews:
No sense of direction.......2000-04-01
This book comes much closer to being an autobiography than a biography. Only about half of the book is really about Bob Wills, and it's a poorly-written book to boot. It's similar to listening to someone just "ramble" all over the place, from one subject and time period to another, with little or no warning. It never flows and is hard to follow. The only reason I give it even 1 star is for a few bits of information about Bob Wills that I might not have read anywhere else and it does have some good pictures.
Good Book has some good points.......1999-01-15
As one other reviewer states, this is unfocused and that is due largely to the face that she wrote this book with Charles Townsends' book open before her, I think. Not enough private or personal information that is really important.
Can a daughter be too kind?.......1999-01-11
I loved this book.
Can a daughter be too forgiving?
I would have appreciated a more autobiographical slant. I can't help but wonder what a wedding is like, what a marriage is like, when a girl can't put her famous father's name on the invitation.
Interesting and done with feeling, but unfocused........1998-12-04
This book can't decide if it is a biography or an autobiography and doesn't succeed as either; it shifts between the author's feelings about her father, their relationship, and her personal growth, while simultaneously attempting to document Bob Will's life. The result is an awkwardly structured narrative, albeit with some interesting insights (but also some minor factual errors).
Unique entertainment figure revealed with love........1998-07-29
Bob Wills daughter, Rosetta, tells of a man who drew from his family's traditional musical roots in West Texas to develop a sound and a style that have influenced generations of musicians up to the present day.
Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Reba McIntire, George Strait, and others tell of debts owed to the influence of Bob Wills. The book reveals a humble, self-effacing personality secure in his musical talent and innovations. He brought diverse musicians together to produce a joyous sound, one that people flocked to dance halls to hear and to dance. He made them "feel good, feel happy" in spite of hard times.
Rosetta, through her dairy kept as a young girl, tells the touching story of tenuous ties with her famous father over the years. Bob Wills married five times, fathering six children. His schedule of daily radio broadcasts, club and dance hall performances, and eight movies may account for the nature of his relationships.
Fans from all walks of life have enc! ouraged Rosetta, telling in this book of their memories and devotion to her father and helping to keep his spirit close to her.
