Book Description
Cliff Janeway is back! The Bookman's Promise marks the eagerly awaited return of the award-winning crime novel series that helped the nation turn on to first-edition book collecting.
The Bookman's Promise juxtaposes past and present as Denver ex-cop and bookman Cliff Janeway searches for a book and a killer.
The quest begins when an old woman -- Josephine Gallant -- learns that Janeway recently bought at auction a signed first edition by the legendary nineteenth-century explorer, Richard Francis Burton. The book is a true classic, telling of Burton's journey -- disguised as a Muslim -- to the forbidden holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The Boston auction house was a distinguished and trustworthy firm, but provenance is sometimes murky and Josephine says it is rightfully hers.
She believes that her grandfather had a fabulous collection of Burton material, but everything mysteriously disappeared shortly after her grandfather's death. With little time left in her own life, Josephine begs for Janeway's promise: he must find her grandfather's collection. When a friend is murdered, Janeway must find the answers. Someone today is willing to kill to keep the secrets of the past.
Rich with the insider's information that has made John Dunning famous, The Bookman's Promise is riveting entertainment from an extraordinarily gifted author who is as unique as the books he so clearly loves.

"Cliff Janeway is back! The Bookman's Promise marks the eagerly awaited return of Denver bookman-author John Dunning and the award-winning crime novel series that helped to turn the nation on to first-edition book collecting. First, it was Booked to Die, then The Bookman's Wake. Now John Dunning fans, old and new, will rejoice in The Bookman's Promise, a richly nuanced new Janeway novel that juxtaposes past and present as Denver ex-cop and bookman Cliff Janeway searches for a book and a killer. So who said he should write a story.......2007-09-29
John Dunning swapped the insider details of the book collector's world that peppered his first two Janeway novels for an actual plot. Fortunately, it almost makes up for the lapse in the curriculum. The notion that the explorer Sir Richard Burton may have been more than an observer during his (historical) sojourn in U.S. just before the Civil War kinda tickles the fancy. But next time, Dunning... next time there better be more lessons.
Maybe 3 1/2 stars.......2007-07-13
This kept my interest. You've got Janeway doing his thing as you'd expect. Though "Bookman's Wake" is my favorite Janeway story, this one has its moments. I especially liked the descriptions of Charleston, SC as I used to live there. The use of Richard Burton (the explorer) was what most kept me involved here. I even picked up something from Dunning's suggested reading list at the end.
Rollicking Read, but not Big Time Fiction.......2007-03-03
The Bookman's Promise, by John Dunning, 2004. Cliff Janeway is an intriguing character with a unique profession - a bookseller, or book connoisseur, or Bookman. Like an alcoholic who runs a bar in order to have ready access to his oblivion, Janeway has to have the big books, the important books. Dunning's mysteries tend to be so enjoyable because of the way his character interests us in books, their feel, their provenance, their allure. Janeway also happens to be an ex-cop, and this keeps the plot running.
The pivotal books in this mystery are those by the famous explorer, linguist, writer, and radical Richard Burton - so we get a second story out of history. From top to bottom, the mystery is well crafted and only marginally predictable. There are a couple of great secondary characters that motivate us and make Janeway's work human and worthwhile. The personal relationship, however, falters and is not well written.
The chapter heads in the book we bought (Scribner, hardbound) were very nice graphics, and the serif font Sabon is greatly pleasing - appropriate for a book about a Bookman.
Overall, a fun read, but best obtained from the library, along with Dunning's other seven books.
Just Awful.......2007-03-02
About half way through I realized why this book was bothering me so much. It was more than just the lame writing, it was the fact that all the characters, including Cliff the big tough ex-Denver detective, were females. The author, who if the flyleaf picture is to be believed, is male just cannot write male characters. His hero bats his eyes at the targets of his desire and makes smalltalk that is painful to read. It is all girltalk. The author likes writing about female characters and they are all big talkers and assertive. Besides Cliff, who is just one of the girls, the other male characters are just two dimentional cutouts. Another irritation was while the characters are constantly remarking on each others' sense of humor there is no wit or humor in the book. Here's a random example and by no means the worst of the lot. Cliff says he's going out one of the females asks where he's going. Cliff replies "here's a movie I want to see. Debbie does the old duffers". The woman says "I heard that doesn't have much of a plot. Where are your really going? Cliff says "to the store for some male needs. The two women looked at each other and tried not to laugh". How can you not howl with bon mots like that flying. There is one amusing line in the book although the author didn't mean it to be funny. Cliff is being interviewed on an NPR book show and refers to talking to the invisible audience. I laughed out loud. I'm sure the NPR audience for this snoozfest show was indeed invisible. Early on the author has Cliff and the NPR weenie share a smile over the fact they both know that the name Richard Burton refers to both a British 19th century explorer and the actor. Maybe in a junior college English Lit department (or NPR) this is a sign of rarefied knowledge but the author should know most people would recognize the "other" Richard Burton. I plowed through this book because I was on a three week business trip to Tirana, Albania and the only English on the hotel cable were CNN and Euronews. Even with that competition it was a real chore to finish this book. Believe me this is just a bad, bad book. Stay away.
Passion in the true sense of the word.......2007-01-05
This is my first John Dunning book. I couldn't put it down, but that's how I am with all good mystery books. Asking me to give an objective literary review of a mystery would be like asking an alcoholic to evaluate Bombay Sapphire.
While the protagonist in The Bookman's Promise isn't particularly original (hard-core ex-cop, always erudite just under the surface, leaves the force under a cloud, etc., etc.), and the secondary characters are fairly stock-in-trade (why is the sex interest ALWAYS blonde???), Mr. Dunning does display a certain adeptness for setting, both place and mood. I was fairly impressed with his accurate and "you-are-there" depictions of Ellicott City and Charleston. This is not, I would suppose, something any author could fake these days, since the American readership is a well-traveled bunch, as a whole. Further, it helps with verisimilitude when one reads of a familiar city and doesn't encounter any glaring errors in the narrative, rather like when my husband is watching any kind of show involving guns and some scriptwriter or actor uses the "wrong" (as in unlikely) weapon or Gunspeak term.
My favorite thing about this story -- and I immediately ordered all the other Bookman stories after having finished with this one -- is the density of information regarding the rare book trade. As a retired English teacher, a former librarian, and a passionate advocate of the preservation of the printed word, I was deeply engaged with this aspect of the story.
We live in a society where even Vice-Presidents relate to fictional characters as if they were real people. Remember Dan Quale and Murphy Brown? A terrible mass of literary works has been lost over the centuries, much of the time by sheer apathy. My hope for Mr. Dunning's books is that his Mr. Janeway inspires many, many readers to revere books, especially those no longer in print, and to appreciate the work and passion of the real-world book preservationists.

Private Investigator Tally McGinnis once again returns to the horror filled world of a serial killer. This tale of thriller suspense and chilling speculation sucks Tally and her hard-boiled gumshoe partner, Cid, into a dark, demonic terror of a mind gone mad.
"Somebody loves me, I wonder who. I wonder who."
Along the Northern California coast, Tally and Cid discover an inept police department and a deadly killer who savagely murders without motive.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This book was very disappointing when it came out. The graphical novel craze was starting, and you had funky painting and things like that being popular, but the story, here, was just not very good, or anything other than a garden variety, run of the mill Batman tale. It was definitely not worth the money.
Not so sure about it's "Best of" status........2007-03-20
Yes, the novel is really cool. Yes, the artwork is phenominal. And yes, Batman is nearly broken in this. But, really, would you consider this "essential" Batman? I am new to the scene, and have only read about 4-5 trade paperbacks, the last of which was The Long Halloween. I found Batman's dialogue to be trite and unintelligent, as Batman never is. It doesn't get dark until halfway through. I almost wanted to put it down at first read. It is worth getting, don't get me wrong, but not essential unless you like the visuals more than the story.
Poetic.......2005-11-24
First founded in the 1920s following the death of his insane mother, Amadeus Arkham converted his late mother's house into a mental institution, knowing little that he had set in motion a chain of events of horrific consequence and bizarre circumstance. Years later, the asylum had become a living Hell on earth, a mental hospital for the deadliest criminal individuals in Gotham City, the enemies of the legendary Batman. April Fool's Day has arrived, and the inmates have all escaped and, led by The Joker, have seized control of the asylum and drag the one man responsible for their incarcerations, Batman, into the madhouse and put him through a mad funhouse of mind cancer. Learn the disturbing origin of Dr. Arkham, and dive into the minds of some of the inmates!
I have always considered the Batman to be such a poetic character, and so this story is unique and fun to read in such its own unique, psychologically thrilling way. Writer Grant Morrison's idea in his book are mystic and focus mainly on the symbiosis between Batman and the insidious psychopaths he has time and time again helped incarcerate. "A Serious House on Serious Earth" is a Bat tale unlike any other, because the characters each represent something. Everything in the story is depicted as some form of symbolism, and include the works of the psychology of Carl Jung, the works of Joseph Campbell, and Lewis Carroll (Bat villain Jervis Tetch, the Mad Hatter, plays a particularly symbolic role here). The villains-Joker, Two-Face, Clayface, Mad Hatter, Maxie Zeus, Killer Croc-each represent important symbols, even Batman himself is a form of symbolism in this tale; Dave McKean's chaotic and mystic artwork is very effective in backing this up (each page actually feels like the inside of the mind of a madman). The main point of "Arkham Asylum" is about madness and facing one's own sanity and fears. Even Batman himself questions his own rationality and wonders if he is really all that different from his enemies. Because it is such a symbolic and poetic tale, "Arkham Asylum" is one of the prizes in my ever-growing graphic novel library. It seems to change every time I read it, and I appreciate it more with each rereading. The story is also brutal and frightening, and more fit for mature reader (it has a pedophilic Mad Hatter in it!). Batman graphic novels have become MUCH darker and more serious ever since the 80s, particularly thanks to Frank Miller and his instant classic, "The Dark Knight Returns." It makes me sad to think that all too many people remember Batman as a campy, comedic icon.
Out of print.......2005-08-15
Amazon couldn't find this title for me, and had to cancel my order.
An inside look at a madman's nightmare........2005-07-08
First, there are two things anyone interested in purchasing or reading this title should know about it beforehand. One, that it is probably not for everyone's taste as it isn't your traditional Batman vs. the villain-of-the-week sort of story, but rather a darker, more disturbing kind of tale that focuses on a deep, complex exploration of madness, told alternately from three different points of view: that of Amadeus Arkham, founder of the asylum, that of Batman and his other persona, Bruce Wayne, and of course, that of all the madmen locked up at the asylum, including the super villains.
Two, that it is "Suggested for Mature Readers" on the back cover as it's probably one of the most unnecessarily violent and ghastly graphic novels ever published under the Batman title, although, I definitely think - regardless of it being at times a bit too disgusting for my taste - that it's also one of the most original and beautifully illustrated narratives ever created for the genre. The superb artwork is perfect for the story with its surreal, dreamy, and suggestive look, even if, on occasion, it gets a little difficult to follow, especially with certain clashing combinations of colors and typographies. Still, the lavish intricacy of the compositions and the broad range of techniques used by the artist are a spectacular visual feast worth the price of the book alone.
The dual story, told in a nicely interwoven parallel, on one hand, explores Arkham's past and how his reasons for founding the asylum derived from decisions he made during the most crucial points of his life, and on the other, focuses on Batman's present day mission to go inside the asylum and, while confronting the insecurities about his own sanity, regain control of the facility after it's been taken over by the Joker.
Arkham's story is from beginning to end an emotional journey through the situations and escalating tragedies that can slowly drive a man insane. It's marvelously shrouded in a veil of mystery and superstition, and brilliantly placed in time during the beginning of the 1900's both by the overall mood of the art and the historical details sprinkled here and there, including, among others, having Arkham meet and learn from both Carl Jung and Aleister Crowley.
Batman's story, told from both his point of view and that of the inmates' is, on the other hand, a lot darker, more twisted and sadly less consistent. Our hero's mischaracterization, present throughout the whole story, is obvious from his first line of dialogue, with which he's not only portrayed as a constantly daunted man, but also as one who reacts with shock and disbelief to the inmates' atrocities and maniacal behavior that he's so used to fighting. Contrastingly, the clever analysis of Joker's psychosis is brilliant right to very last page of the book, even in spite of the endless sexually perverted innuendos from him - who even hints at a homosexual relationship between Batman and Robin - that somewhat lessen the impact of the story's emotional momentum.
The story concludes with the most satisfactory ending I've so far encountered in any graphic novel - worthy of a 5-star rating on its own -, an excellent comparison of the contrasts and similarities between Arkham and Batman's sense of duty, the ghosts of their pasts, and the skeletons in each one's closet.
As you'd expect from the title, along with the Joker, a fair amount of villains make an appearance, enriching Arkham Asylum's decadent milieu, among them Two-Face, Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Clayface, Prof. Milo, Dr. Destiny, Maxie Zeus, Black Mask, etc. The constant references to April Fools' Day and Alice in Wonderland, the changes introduced to Two-Face's alter ego, Harvey Dent, and the re-imagining of some of the other super villains, are truly delightful as well. But where the most pleasant surprises of the story lie for me are on Batman's iterated questioning of the "cures" administered to the inmates by the asylum's doctors, and the contemplation of the possibility that madness might not only be a physical illness but that it could also be a contagious disease.
Despite the fact that this book could use some degree of fine-tuning in a few places and a little less unwarranted violence in others, overall it holds its own and delivers a fantastic story about how different people perceive the world around them when they see it through their own demented biases.
This volume is definitely a must-have addition to any serious Batman collection.

I subscribe to several Complementary and Alternative Medicine newsletters, so I know a thing or two, and this is one of the best books on the mind, food, nutraceuticals and drugs I have ever seen! I adore this book! The questionaires to determine which neurotransmitters, if any, you are low on, is excellent. Their advice that if you are low on both dopamine and serotonin, you begin by replenishing serotonin first, is utterly sound, I can attest from my personal experience. Their recommendations on nutraceuticals are also sound (I've tried 'em all, and they are dead right, phosphatidylserine rules for building up both serotonin and dopamine.) Their advice on sleep and it's effect on one's neurotransmitters is excellent too. Just the few pages on hormones and their effects on neurotransmitters are worth the price of the book! I discovered everything they say about hormones from (most painful) personal experience, many months of research on the World Wide Web, and much experimentation. I hope if/when I am admitted to medical school I will have teachers half as good as these two MDs.

This book is informative, interesting, and fun all at the same time. The quizzes really taught me something about myself that I never knew, and the program has made me feel so much better, both physically and mentally. I'm a much happier person now, thanks to this book.
Great new book!.......2004-04-07
The quizzes in this book are great. I was able to quickly figure out why I'm not feeling my best and then immediately start a plan to get myself back on track.
I've been on this plan for a few weeks and already have so much more energy -- I'm better rested, eating well, and exercising some too.

Any idiot can throw a steak on a grill and eat. This book goes a step further. This cookbook introduces different methods of using the grill for venison, duck, pheasant, and fish. Also included was vegetrian, side dishes, and deserts. The "Pineapple Wedges with Butter Rum Glaze" was incredible. If you are bored with the same old [stuff] from a grill BUY THIS BOOK.
too fancy!.......2002-01-15
Way too fancy for your average BBQ fan. Unless you like goat cheese and fennel on your quale, yes thats right quale, then you will not like this book. As a matter of fact, i dont think there is one recipe that uses a good old BEEF as the main ingredient. Make the meals in this book and you will be hungry 10 minutes later. Doesn't help that the Author is from England, not much BBQing going on there! The "encyclopedia of" collection is fantastic but they made a mistake with this authur!

Book Description
When you judge decisions, you have to judge them in light of what there was available to do, noted Secretary of State George C. Marshall to the Senate in 1951. In this spirit, this volume addresses and succeeds in outlining the mammoth task that Northern Americans faced after the Civil War in restoring the Union. Originally published in 1975 by the J.B. Lippincott Company.
