Book Description
The Bridge on the Drina is a vivid depiction of the suffering history has imposed upon the people of Bosnia from the late 16th century to the beginning of World War I. As we seek to make sense of the current nightmare in this region, this remarkable, timely book serves as a reliable guide to its people and history.
"No better introduction to the study of Balkan and Ottoman history exists, nor do I know of any work of fiction that more persuasively introduces the reader to a civilization other than our own. It is an intellectual and emotional adventure to encounter the Ottoman world through Andric's pages in its grandiose beginning and at its tottering finale. It is, in short, a marvelous work, a masterpiece, and very much sui generis. . . . Andric's sensitive portrait of social change in distant Bosnia has revelatory force."--William H. McNeill, from the introduction
"The dreadful events occurring in Sarajevo over the past several months turn my mind to a remarkable historical novel from the land we used to call Yugoslavia, Ivo Andric's The Bridge on the Drina."--John M. Mohan, Des Moines Sunday Register
Born in Bosnia, Ivo Andric (1892-1975) was a distinguished diplomat and novelist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. His books include The Damned Yard: And Other Stories, and The Days of the Consuls.

A Novel That Sees the Future in the Past.......2007-07-20
This novel, a series of stories covering 400 years of history of a town in Bosnia, ends in 1914 but has great relevance to recent times in the former Yugoslavia and in other countries where ethnic and tribal divisions are important. It is humane and understanding about the ability and inability of people with different religious and cultural backgrounds to live together. It was written in 1950 but is prescient about what has happened in such societies since then, and for this reason makes its selection for the Nobel prize a good one.
If only objects could share their story with us, what would they tell?.......2007-06-30
Ivo Andric describes the history of ex-Yugoslavian region through the building and a life of a bridge. Let this not fool you. The book is not devoid but infused with emotions, feelings, and will leave the reader in cold sweet. The brutality of the life in the historical perspective of the region is given much detail. Those who have weak stomach should be careful about reading the first few chapters. You will, when you finish reading this book, understand the region and the people a bit better. And maybe by understanding the region and the people, you will get a glimpse at the volatile soil of ex-Yugoslavia, grasping the centuries of fighting, all in hopes for freedom. Some questions of recent conflicts might be answered. And you will definitely pose many more questions.
Andric received his Nobel Prize for this book, and the fact that it is one of few books written by an Yugoslavian author, which has been translated into many languages, shows its value in the international community of readers. It will hold you and it will fascinate you. You will want to throw up and it will make you cry. But, you will leave knowing that there is always a bridge leading you into realms unknown...is it heaven or hell? that is yours to decide.
An outstanding peice of European literature.......2007-05-09
The author of this book is almsot a perfect example of the Balkans. A Croat from Bosnia who is now fought over by all sides of the ethnic divide its almost as if what he actually wrote is forgotten.
This is a remarkable book. It is not simply a historical novel the personal lives of the people under Ottoman rule, the building of the bridge, originally a gift to the people there along with a hostel for travellers. How the Muslim population at first welcomed its construction only to have second thoughts when they realised just how much effort and burdon it would put on the population to construct. The Serb rebals who try to demolish the bridge and the terrible punishment that their leader suffered when caught. How over the centuries the bridge became a focal point in the city and how the lives of the people changed due to outside events out of their control (The collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of the great powers of Europe) There is one beautiful passage in this book when the Muslim population of the town wake up to find the borders of the Ottoman Empire had suddenly been redrawn hundreds of miles away and how they looked over the new map of the Balkans trying to make sense of it all.
My only complaint (and it is a small one) is why on earth did the translator refer to the Muslims as 'Turks' when (and if you read the book closely its even more obvious) they were so clearly not!
Praise for the book, doubt about the translation.......2007-02-04
I have the book in the original. Edwards' translation is terrible. He has not only a dubious aesthetic sense, but his grasp of the Serbian language is wanting. In places the translation is literal; in places it is wrong. There is scarcely a line of dialogue translated flawlessly. I recommend keeping all this in mind when reading.
On the other hand, Andric's chronicle is all it aspires to be. It is a careful description of the famous Bosnian town where he spent his childhood, the town that hugs the bridge that Mehmed-pasha Sokolovichi built. Naturally, the portion of it which intersects his life, and which consists of the twenty-two years that pass from 1892 to 1914, will be found more interesting than the rest, in my opinion; but Andric knows his weakness, and the bulk of the book lies just in that portion.
Amazing book.......2007-01-04
Parts of this book are difficult to get through, but if you want to understand what's happening with the world's religions today this book offers incredible insights. Well worth the read.
Customer Reviews:
I want to visit the bridge!.......2007-01-17
I first heard of this book when eating at a restaurant in Travnik, Bosnia in 1998. I was told the restaurant was a former home of Ivo Andric who wrote a book about a place in Bosnia and then got a Nobel Prize. After spending 18 months working Bosnia, and reading numerous no-fiction books on the area, I finally picked up this book and read it on my way home. I rarely read fiction, but this historical novel was a delight. I found myself imagining the places and the people and hoped someday I would see the bridge. The book depicts both the pleasures and horrors of a place typical of Balkan history.
In 2003, I was again in Bosnia. I didn't get to see the bridge this time either, but I am told it is there at the town of Visegrad. While in Kosovo in 2006 I searched Amazon for more books to read on the Balkans and remembered this book. No matter what I read, I will never forget the images I have in my mind from the passages of this book, and the struggle of a village to survive through the centuries.

I loved Bitter Sweets-- a Fun Read!.......2006-06-23
I love Savannah, and would love to have her as a friend. This series is very intelligent, as well, and I found this book to be even better and more interesting than the first in the series. I really enjoyed this book, and wanted to keep reading it even when I had to put it down. I looked forward to a lengthy reading time at night, so I could spend more time with Savannah and her crew. Excellent title for this as well!
Great summer fun!.......2005-07-08
I love all of these Savannah Reid mysteries. They are great reads.
Unlike some of the female plot driven mysteries now popular the plot isnt so easy to figure out. There is always a little something you didnt expect.
The characters are fun and warm, making you feel like you know them.
There is always a sub plot that is just as engaging as the mystery.
I highly recommend them all to any mystery fan.
G. A. McKevett is Sonja Massie's pseudonym.......2005-07-01
I absolutely love the Savannah Reid mystery series. She is my kind of gal...sassy, a bit "fluffy", a Southern belle, and sweet as pie! This book is the darkest of the series...but a great read. Read them all. You'll be glad you did!
I really like this series..........2004-05-31
While I was up half the night with what seems to be the flu, I was pretty much able to start and finish Bitter Sweets by G. A. McKevett. This is the second book in the series, and you end up getting a fair amount of character development devoted to Savannah's grandmother. She shows up on Savannah's doorstep, wanting to experience a trip to Disneyland. Unfortunately, Savannah has a few other things going on.
Savannah's new detective agency gets its first case, and it's a request to track down a missing sister. They take all the necessary precautions to make sure the person requesting the trace is actually her brother, and they start the hunt. When they finally find her, they learn she's in hiding from her ex-husband who has threatened to kill her and their daughter. Before Savannah can arrange a meeting between brother and sister, she finds out she's been duped. The sister is murdered, the child is kidnapped, and Savannah now has to track down the killer. To make it worse, the chief of police is seriously considering charging her with being an accessory to the murder.
A nice number of twists and turns, and some ethical questions at the end where you have to figure out whether justice would be served by doing the "right" thing.
Bitter Disappointment in Bitter Sweets.......2003-10-13
I'm not sure if my disappointment is in the quality of the book, or in the fact that I was misled by the cheery cover & title.
British mysteries are quite a different genre from American hard-boiled detective stories: they are cosy and comforting, almost a "Tea and Murder" party. Yes, there has been a murder: but brutual details are not stressed, so as not to disturb the reader's equanimity. Instead, we are given a delicious smorgasbord: piquant characters, a peek into a society or life-style very different from our own, a tantalizing puzzle to solve through logic and the famous "little grey cells". Although McKevett is an American author, the cover, the title, and the blurb on the back cover led me to believe that "Bitter Sweets" belong to this genre.
We are indeed offered piquant characters, although no character development. But the violence of the murder jolted me out of the cosy Tea and Murder mode. Even more distressing was the lack of a puzzle ... the murderer was easily identifiable. Why read a mystery when there is no mystery?

MR. HALEY HAS DONE US A GREAT SERVICE WITH THIS BOOK. THE EDITORIAL HERE IS A GREAT DISSERVICE!!!.......2005-09-10
What "strains credibility" is the fact that Mr. Beatty could have read this book and come up with an editorial like this!!!!
I am fully, mentally capable of reading Mr. Haley's book and seeing documented proof of the travesties which have been committed against wonderful people who are doing phenomenal jobs of trying to help and save people. In turn, these people are villified and crucified by government agencies and professional associations who do not want people to recover from diseases--they want to hear the cha-ching in their collective coffer (to the tune of HOW MUCH MONEY????). I truly resent the fact that an American of average intelligence can read this book and easily figure out what's going on, but the person writing the editorial can "read" this book (if he did!) and make the ridiculous comments he did! The customer reviews here tell the REAL story! Ignore the editorial bunk! It makes you really sick to find out what these people, who are trying to earn an honest living, have had to put up with. My heart goes out to all of them for what they have had to go through. I have followed through with research on several of these people so far, and can say that it is worth your while to further research these people, and obtain additional reading on them. Again, a heartfelt thank you to these martyrs who go with their conscience and don't fold up in the face of all the adversity they have faced and continue to face, and a big, fat RASPBERRY to Mr. Beatty!!!!!
WAKE UP AMERICA, AND READ THIS BOOK!.......2005-09-02
This powerful book is a shocking testimony to the power of the lobby - and money. The FDA, FTC, and AMA - those who we believe to be protecting us - have their thumb over the cure for many, many diseases including cancers. Every TV journalist/news reporter should be diving into this book and running with the information. This is a matter of life and death. Well written, researched, and presented.
Politics in Healing.......2004-12-21
Whewww!! What an eye opener. I could not put this book down. To think that this could happen in the good old US of A, boy was I naive. What an amazing story, there are multiple movies within it's covers. It really makes you wonder how many other researchers and scientists didn't even come forward with their research due to the fear of being ridiculed, censored and persecuted. Clearly, scientists today need a work environment that is conducive to curing disease and it's causes and not, whether it is patentable and how much you can charge.Socialized Medicine starts looking pretty good when you see the pure greed in the medical and pharmaceutical industries.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is sick,or knows of anyone who is.
What a shame it is to have to travel to Mexico or Canada to seek a non-toxic treatment that could save your life. Americans have got to come together and write their elected officials and demand an overhaul of the FDA, and that these discoveries get another look from an independent panel. Yeah we're mad as heck and we aren't going to take it anymore.Furthermore, any Doctor or Clinician who deliberately sabotages medical studies should be held accountable and persecuted to the full extent of the law. People are Dieing!
Documented government-sponsored murder.......2004-08-23
You must read this book if you or your loved ones want to overcome cancer. If I had had the information in this book 10 years ago, I believe I could have saved my former wife's life. She was a victim of the cancer treatment "system."
What makes this book so special is the DETAILED DOCUMENTATION that Daniel Haley has done. There is no way to dispute that government agencies including the FDA, NCI and FTC have systematically suppressed cancer cures that worked. They are continuing this suppression to this day. The only explanation can be that the political power of the pharmaceutical industry drives our medical system.
The 12 exquisitely documented cases Mr. Haley describes are not unique. What makes them special is that public records exist which show both the efficacy of the cancer treatment and the active suppression that makes it difficult for cancer patients (and victims of other degenerative diseases) to find and use these options.
Knowledge is indeed power. With the information in this book, you can avoid becoming a victim of our corrupt medical "establishment." You can seek out the alternative treatments that work. With the help of the Internet, you can literally become "smarter than your oncologist" about cancer treatment in a few short hours.
A Physician's Perspective.......2003-12-01
No words can justify this amazing book. Daniel Haley has done an absolutely phenomenol job of painting a true and accurate picture regading the past and present of traditional medicine and the suppression of innovation and advances in medicine. I challenge anyone to pick up this book and try and put it down after reading 15 pages. Some say that the two largest industries in the US are crime and medicine. Others say that these two industries are the one and the same. After reading Haley's book, and from my own experience as a physician heavily involved in research as well as treating patients with cancer and heart disease who have failed conventional therapies, I can say that Daniel Haley, if anything, understated the truth. A must read for all who seek the truth in medicine and especially for all doctors, regardless of their medical field of interest or their current status/position in their respective careers.

Living Up to its Title.................2001-11-06
This cookbook could be dubbed "A tribute to the hot pepper!" This most enjoyable cookbook opens with a guide to the many types of chili peppers and spices that are traditionally found in Asian cooking and also contains a brief overview necessary kitchen equipment (wok, bamboo steamer, slotted spoons, etc.). These guides are sufficient to get novices started.
So far, the recipes contained within this cookbook are quite good. My husband and I have prepared: Asian vegetable and lentil soup, chili-noodle cakes, red curry shrimp, Thai spicy chicken with basil, duck on a bed of chili onions, chili beef burgers with Asian salad, and pork with ginger and lime sauce. All have been very tasty and each is distinct. There is also an intriguing dessert section that we haven't yet tried which includes recipes for pistachio and cardamom ice cream, mango and cumin lassi, chilled spice tea, and ginger and nutmeg sweet potato pudding. All and all this cookbook contains more than forty recipes. This includes a chapter containing sauce and condiment recipes.
I want to add that while I am enjoying this cookbook very much, its flavors are suited to the American palate. None of my Asian friends would say, "Wow, just like Mom makes!". This may put off some of you out there who are looking for a more authentic experience. Also, the photographs in this cookbook aren't quite what they could be. While attractive, the photos of each dish are typically blurry around the edges, often with only the closest part of the dish being in focus. I'm not usually too fussy about food photos, but this was enough to make me notice it. Again, I wanted to mention this because it may bother some potential buyers. The photos could simply be of higher quality.

There's hot food, and then there's hotter still. Lovers of the latter should find Jackie Passmore's Fire & Spice a chile-fueled windfall. Passmore, an award-winning cookbook author, has traveled widely in Thailand, Malaysia, China, and India, tasting, cooking, and collecting recipes. More than 200 of these appear in this aptly titled book that celebrates Asian culinary exuberance.
Following a chile guide and an ingredient glossary listing everything from aamchur (ground dried green mango), to wasabi (the pungent Japanese root), Passmore divides the recipes among chapters such as "Soups and Salads," "Greens and Grains," and "Main Flavors: Beef and Lamb." Recipes for savory dishes, which include Singapore Chili Crab, Szechwan Piquant Chicken, and Thai Pork and Long Beans in Hot Chili Sauce, are followed by those for sweets, some chile-spiked but nonetheless cooling. The heat quotient of most of the recipes is indicated, as is their preparation time, and all are accessible. Small essays, like "Balinese Beginnings," are scattered throughout the text; they recount Passmore's evolving love affair with hot, while providing a cook's-eye-view of the countries where the incendiary is home. --Arthur Boehm

Fire and spice: Cooking for fun.......1999-12-15
Fire and spice has a great variety of things to make and try and most all of them are very very good. Of course you have to like Thai, Chinese, and other rather spice (and/or hot) foods.
Most recipes are easy to put together and are in general highly modifiable according to taste.
Try the Twice Cooked Pork, Beef w/ Orange Rind and Szechuan Peppercorns, and Chengtu Chicken. Try them all!
Well worth the price, which was a bargain anyway.

A well-rounded, DELICIOUS collection of Thai/Asian recipes!.......1997-07-22
Wonderful recipes which can be made hotter or milder according to your tastes. I'm using this book as part of a Thai cooking basket which I have prepared for wedding gifts for friends. You'll find a perfect sampling of delicious soups and entrees, among other things. Standards like Pad Thai are covered, but you'll be impressed with the other dishes, which, with a base of 8-10 ingredients such as garlic, jalepenos, fish sauce and chili paste (all which can be found in most comprehensive grocery stores), can be easily whipped up in a wok or just a plain large pan on top of your stove. Healthy and hot as you like, plunge right into Asian cooking with the help of this well-thought-out collection of recipes

Salvage Style for the Garden Review.......2005-01-22
I'm always looking for more accessories for my gardens, but I don't like my garden looking like a display for the local garden centers, so I was excited to see the interesting new Marcianne Miller book, Salvage Style for the Garden. I was inspired to create more than one of the projects in this book, and it also helped me think more creatively when I looked at some of the things I already had laying around in the shed.
This book has projects that will please the most sophisticated gardener, as well as projects for gardeners who like a more primitive or country look. Miller and Irwin have an original and creative sense of style and many of the projects in this book are very different from the standard copycat projects everyone else seems to have. Planters, benches, trellises and projects that are just plain fun fill the book.
As the book progresses, you will see some of my favorite projects, such as a huge pinwheel, which I am very excited about making for my children's garden. You will learn step by step techniques for creating garden ornamentation like a glass hanging planter or a window leg table from pieces that you can find in your local salvage yard or pieces you may even have in your own cellar.
All in all, there are over forty ideas with step by step instructions. There are also many more ideas to inspire you to create you own garden art and structures in the galleries of additional ideas.
The best thing about this book is that it is not just a pattern book for making projects. It is also set up to teach you to look for and use salvage to create your own unique pieces. It is well written, crammed with ideas, and fun to read. The pleasure these women feel when they create a new ornament for their gardens comes through very clearly in this book.

If you like applique.............2005-01-25
If you like applique, you will like this book. The applique projects are complemented by Ms Armstrong's orginal hand quilting patterns; the quilting seems to continue the pictures painted by the qpplique. In addition to "blooms and butterflies", there are also frogs, turtles, moths of many kinds, bees, ect. This is not a beginner's book. Some needle turn experience will be helpful. Detail work is completed with simple embroidry stiches. All the projects are small, meant for wall hanging. A lovely book that will inspire.

Our nesting instinct has allowed the stuff to take over. Emmy Award–winning host and design guru Christopher Lowell provides the perfect solution in Seven Layers of Organization. Lowell Proves He's a House-Whisperer and a Whitty, Humorous Writer.......2007-06-29
If you're overwhelmed with "stuff" and need help purging, then this is the book for you. Lowell's exceptional design skills combined with his personal charm make the book an enjoyable, worthwhile read. Lowell presents a clutter "attack-plan" that's very easy to comprehend and initiate. He describes how to first eliminate the obvious junk and then follows with a step-by-step method for letting go of items people tend to be more attached to (i.e. things we spent good money on but don't use, or gifts we don't like but were given to us by friends and family). Lowell's book discusses ways to tackle colossal amounts junk, unused "good stuff", and ways to minimize the feelings of guilt associated with the purging process. The send half of the book illustrates Lowell's design genius. Before and After photos show how remarkable a room can be after a design face-lift, clutter is removed, and functional storage systems are incorporated. If you simply need help deciding which basket would work best for your 5 neatly folded sweaters, then don't buy this book. However, if your situation is a bit more dire - for example, getting to the closet door is an obstacle course, which reveals a sea of clothing on the floor scattered with items that belong in the kitchen, den, dumpster, or wherever - then this is the book for you!

Christopher Lowell To The Rescue.......2007-02-23
Practical, sound advice that really works to unclutter ones life. Lowell gets to the route of the problem instead of just superficial fixes, and the usual expensive storage solutions. Although he suggests to give the book away after reading it to avoid adding to clutter, I'm keeping it......The photos are superb, I'm convinced Christopher Lowell is a true master of design and clutter.I miss watching his TV show. This book fills the gap. Looking forward to the next new book by Christopher Lowell.

Customer Reviews:
Top Ten doesn't really cover Reed's Top Ten.......2000-06-16
This paperback provides movie summaries (opposed to critical reviews) of ten Reed films, including: The Brood, Castaway, Curse of the Werewolf, The Damned, The Devils, The Hunting Party, I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name, Sitting Target, Venom, and Women in Love.
This is an interesting list since the films generally considered as Reed's finest (Oliver! and The Three/Four Musketeers) if not most popular, are omitted. Why this is the case is a mystery to me since the criteria for which the film were selected is never mentioned. Still, with accompanying stills (sans photo credit), it gives fans a chance to read about Reed--something that is not so easy to do these days.
