When Mrs. Cobb heard unearthly noises in the antique-filled farmhouse, she called Jim Qwilleran for help. But he was too late. It looked as if his kindly ex-housekeeper had been frightened to death--but by whom? Or what? Now Qwilleran's moved into the historic farmhouse with his two cat companions--and Koko the Siamese is spooked. Is it a figment of feline imagination--or the clue to a murder in Moose County? And does Qwilleran have a ghost of a chance of solving this haunting mystery?

These Cats will never get old.......2007-08-29
Ms Braun is a master writer. I have personally read almost all of her "cat" books and each one stands on its own.....however, you know the characters as your own neighbors.
So Sad...........2007-08-01
In the latest edition with Qwill and the gang of cats we see a major character killed off which is so sad cos she was one of the nices ones.
Once discovered that Qwills old friend has been "scared to death" he moves in to the farm house, which doubles as a museum, and begins to sniff out possible explanations for his dear friends death. Again this leads to Ko Ko trying to state the facts from his point of view what is going on, even going as far as talking to ghost....or so it seems. And naturally what insues is fun new characters, more murders, and even more mayhem all leading to the killer in the end.
If your looking for a really easy read this is definitly for you as long as you are a fan of the series because the murder mystery definitly takes back seat to the other story lines and new and familiar characters that pop up. If your new to the series I would recommend starting at the beginning to see how it all began. A must read for any Cat Who fan....
My Favorite Cozy Mystery Series!.......2006-10-01
In the 10th book in the Cat Who mystery series, James Qwilleran aka "Qwill", is called late one evening by his dear friend, Iris Cobb. Iris has been frightened by some noises that she hears outside of her apartment at the Goodwinter Memorial Museum and begs Qwill to help her. Immediately throwing on clothes over his pajamas, Qwill rushes out to Iris' home, and arrives too late, only to find his former housekeeper already dead...apparently from a heart attack. Mourning the loss of his friend, Qwill agrees to move into her apartment and take her place until a permanent replacement is found. Moving into Iris' home also gives Qwill the opportunity to poke around in her sudden and suspicious death.
Moving his adored cats, KoKo and Yum Yum, to the museum, Qwill begins to question his feeling about ghosts. Several influential members of the town claim to have seen them, and Qwill wonders if Iris had been frightened to death by a ghost's apparition. But redirecting Qwill's attention from the untimely death are several other strange occurances in Moose County. One is the annoying presence of Vince Boswell, the loud, brash man who lives up the lane from the museum and who is being considered to be the replacement for Iris, despite his lack of aptitude for the job. Another is an escaped felon that shows up in town...and shortly after his arrival, his ex-wife's goats are poisoned. Finally, many begin to wonder about the Goodwinter curse, and rumors continue to swirl regarding the death of Ephraim Goodwinter decades after his death. Qwill questions all of the facts, and in the end, finds that all of the pieces to this puzzle neatly tie together to spell murder.
This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. I must say that I was very saddened by Iris' death, as she was one of my favorite characters in this series. Many fans enjoy the homey, familiar feel of the town and the characters themselves, and Iris had become one of the favorites. I did, however, love this installment with all of its twists and turns!
If you are looking for a hardcore thriller, this would not be the series for you. However, if you are a fan of small town cozies, give this series a try. You might just find that you have become an avid "Cat Who" fan before the book is even finished.
This is a great series by my favorite author!
The first book in the series is called "The Cat who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!
The Cat who talked to ghosts.......2006-08-06
The cat series are just a pleasure to listen to. Lilian Jackson Braun has captured the essense of a good mystery, and George Guidall brings the charactures to life. Easy listening.
A Wispy Mystery for Fans of the "Cat Who" Series.......2006-03-18
I received a hardbound copy of this book, signed by the author and the cat, Koko. For a cat lover, Koko's signature is very nice. Unfortunately, this tenth member of the "The Cat Who" series is the wrong place to start reading. If you have not read any of the series, it would be wise to begin with the first book and proceed through the ten books in succession. For fans of "The Cat Who" series, I suspect that this is another enjoyable story of the comings and goings of the citizens of Moose County, especially newsman Jim Quilleran and his cats, Yum Yum and Koko. For persons that have not read the previous books, it may seem like a talkative record of daily life in Moose County. The mystery in the story relates to the death of Iris Cobb from a heart attack. Was the heart attack caused by ghosts? It comes as no surprise that ghosts had nothing to do with it. My advice, if you have not read any books in the series, is to read the earlier ones first and don't expect a thriller. You likely will either love this book, or be bored by it.

George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield, ship's detectives, accept a new assignment on a cruise ship bound for Egypt. The Duke and Duchess of Fife are aboard, and the detectives' secondary task is to keep an eye on the royals and do their best to ensure their security. Through the eyes of Conrad Allen, a luxury cruise to Egypt in 1908 becomes a majestic voyage, albeit with a murderer in the mix, upon which readers will be eager to embark.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Conrad Allen mystery to date.......2006-09-29
Murder on the Marmora, brings us back in time to a point where travel on the ocean was the only way to get to where you were going, and the most luxury that you could find anywhere. These ships were also a great place for the criminal element.
In this story we follow George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield as they track down confidence men and more sinister characters. Like the title suggests there is a murder on board and it is up to Dillman and Masefield to solve the crime.
With great detail, many characters are brought into the story, and fans of Allen will delight in meeting Genevieve's former fiancée. The characters and settings are rich in detail, and the mystery will keep you turning the pages.
Again Conrad Allen scores a touchdown with Murder on the Marmora.
Best George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield Mystery So Far.......2004-09-08
Murder on the Marmora is the fifth fictional voyage of George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield, and I found it to be the most enjoyable.
The Marmora is a P & O (Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company) ship on which Dillman and Masefield are playing their familiar roles as undercover detectives. The ship doesn't provide any of the glamour that helped make the earlier books about the Lusitania and the Mauretania interesting. That lack is filled in by the novelty of minor Royals, the Duke and Duchess of Fife and their children, on board with the usual bevy of Royal watchers and hangers-on. The ship is also off to exotic Egypt and contains some rare artifacts.
Relations are tougher though on the detectives. The purser was once turned down by Cunard and holds a grudge against anyone who has worked for that luxury line. The purser likes Americans even less so Dillman takes his lumps in this new relationship.
Once on board, there's the usual crime spree that this series always features along with a quick death as the title suggests. From there, the detectives wander around not learning very much until just at the end of the book.
One of the most interesting of the subplots brings Genevieve Masefield into the company of her ex-fiancé. I rated the book as the best in the series due to the benefits of that subplot. Otherwise, I would have found this book to be an undistinguished three star effort.
Bon voyage!
Best yet in good series.......2004-07-04
After several voyages with the famous Cunard line, cruise ship detectives George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield take a job with a competitor--P&O in a cruise from England to Australia by way of Egypt and the Suez Canal. Unlike their experience with Cunard, however, they find the Pursor unhelpful and even antagonistic. He assures them that his nose for trouble is all that is needed to keep his ship clean. Unfortunately, several robberies prove him wrong. When one of their suspects is murdered, Genevieve and George know that they need to move quickly in able to prove their worth, but the crimes are so skillful, without any evidence of tampering with the cabin locks, that they realize they are dealing with a professional.
George and Genevieve work together to determine who could have known about any valuables hidden in cabins, clear alibis, and deal with the personalities on board the ship--a difficulty compounded by Genevieve's ex-fiance now on board as a newlywed but still interested in Genevieve, and the young woman who quickly falls for George.
MURDER ON THE MARMORA is the fifth in author Conrad Allen's George Dillman/Genevieve Masefield historical mystery series and the strongest to date. Allen added more dimension to his characters while maintaining the entertaining mystery and strong period atmosphere of his earlier mysteries. Allen sets his stories in the glory days of the cruise industry before World War I--a period when manners mattered, dress was formal, and progress seemed certain.
Not a winner........2004-04-28
I'm afraid the Dillman/Masefield series is getting very repetitious, and this novel is a good example. The protagonists investigate thefts and a murder on a voyage from England to Egypt and wrap things up before the vessel reaches Port Said. However, it's the same cast of shipboard characters with diferent names, and not much new happens, although the author tries to introduce variation by adding a purser who is hostile to the detectives and the appearance of Genevieve's former fiance, a creep if ever there was one. There are lots of red herrings, and, as it turns out, two sets of villains, but one has the nagging sense of having read it all before. Maybe there's just nothing left to do to liven things up on board. Pirates??
picturesque sea voyage mystery.......2004-02-02
After sailing on the maiden voyages of the Lusitania and Mauretania for the Cunard Shipping Company as in-house detectives, George Dillman and Genevieve now work for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. They are sailing on the Marmora from England to Australia with a stop in Egypt. The purser on the ship Brian Kilhendry makes it clear to the duo that he has no use for them and thinks they are not needed as there is never crime on his ship.
Shortly after he makes that proclamation, a woman sailing alone is robbed of her jewelry and money while she is out of the cabin. Other robberies follow and the victims are all women traveling without a man to protect them. While the two detectives are trying to help the victims, a man is murdered but nothing is missing from the room. The man was very well liked leaving Dillman and Genevieve desperate to find the criminals even if it puts them in danger.
Anyone who loves to sail the seven seas will want to read MURDER ON THE MARMORA, a picturesque who-done-it that will make readers want to go on a cruise. Although much of the book is concentrated on the mystery, Genevieve is kept busy trying to evade her ex-fiancé on board with his new bride and Dillman is trying to discourage a young woman from chasing after him. The surprise ending is just the icing on the cake for one of Conrad Allen's best voyage mysteries.

A Bit Bland........2002-03-17
Predator & Prey: Mage continues the series of books based in the Michigan area that are loosely set around hunters - "normal" humans that find themselves suddenly imbued with powers to battle the undead. A few of the locations and characters will be familiar to fans of the rest of this series, but reading the other books is not necessary in order to understand P&P: Mage.
The main antagonists in this novel are "mages" of the Technocracy - a secret, extremely powerful organization of magic users that is trying to control the destiny of modern civilization. They have plans for the dark, depressed, fictional town that the novel is set in, but those plans are initially foiled when they choose the wrong pawn for their scheme. That's pretty much all I can say without giving the plot away. ;)
The main character in this story is pretty well designed and given a solid background - many readers (especially those out of college) will be able to identify with him. Still, the plot has a few holes in it, and isn't particularly complex or scary. Fans of the Technocracy will also be upset at how "faceless" and shallow the villains are (right up until the end of the book, that is).
While I wouldn't recommend this novel to people that aren't Mage fans, it certainly isn't a bad experience. While I won't read it a second time, I do think that P&P: Mage was worth the money I spent on it.
Book Description
"I believe that Marion Woodman now lives on a new level. Radiant . . . her intensely personal book, looking death straight in the eye, may also be her best book yet." (The Bloomsbury Review)
November 7, 1993, Marion Woodman was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Here, in journal form, is the story of her illness, her healing process, and her acceptance of life and death. Breathtakingly honest about the factors she feels contributed to her cancer, Woodman also explains how she drew upon every resource-physical and spiritual-available to her to come to terms with her illness. Dreams and imagery, self-reflection and body work, and both traditional and alternative medicine play distinctive roles in Woodman's recovery. Her personal treasury of art, photographs, and quotations-from Dickinson to Blake to Rumi-embellish this unique chronicle of a very personal journey toward transformation.
Customer Reviews:
Marion Woodman - a gentle heroine.......2007-10-10
Once I picked up this book I could not put it down until I finished it completely, then I went back and made notes on it. My own world view is different than Marion Woodman's but I picked up some valuable insights from this book anyway. It also contains the most horrific account of a cancer treatment I have ever read anywhere. It makes me shudder weeks later just thinking about it. Marion Woodman's own beautiful personality shines through this book. It will also inspire you to try to eat ten servings of the brightly colored vegetables and fruits a day. Go ahead and buy it, it is well worth it.
A Rare Opportunity.......2001-02-24
After having read all of Marion Woodman's books and participating in two workshops at Esalen and one with Robert Bly in San Francisco, it was very exciting for me to be able to read this very intimate personal journal of her own spiritual and psychological process. In her lectures this wonderful woman is so open and honest and present and she is even more so in this book. It took my breath away to travel this moving difficult path with her. If you know Marion and love her this book is a must read. If you don't have any experience with her or Jungian theory I think it will be hard to follow since much of it assumes familiarity with her theories of the conscious feminine. She is a deep thinker with complex feelings. She models for us how to practice what she teaches. The book is also filled with her favorite poems and passages from the writers who inspired her teaching career before she went to Zurich to study Jung. There are also glimpses into her long and fruitful marriage to Ross and even a postscript from him to the reader. I am waiting for her book on the demon lover which she alludes to in this book. I love this book. There is much to savor and learn on many dimensions.
powerful and profound.......2000-09-28
marion woodman is unequaled in her ability to see life, in all it's complicated paradoxes, and articulate her journey through it... i find her latest book to be compelling as she shares her personal story with compassion and rigorous honesty... just knowing that she has walked her own path inspires me to continue to walk mine... if you've ever wondered if someone walks ahead of you then read 'bone' and know she is ....

Book Description
The chapters in this book, by specialists in various areas of modern Russian history and culture, explore the ways in which Russians during the past century have provided one of the most basic of human needs--housing. At the end of the nineteenth century, Russian housing reflected both tradition and sweeping social change, from the peasant countryside to the growth of major new urban centers. The first three chapters of the book illustrate this contrast in shelter, as well as the accomplishments and inadequacies of the pre-revolutionary building boom. The intractable problems of housing within a society in transition were addressed with new vigor by Soviet planners. The book examines idealistic, modernist projects for housing in the 1920s, as well as workers' settlements for the Five-Year Plans. The bombastic pretensions of Stalinist architecture are also explored from a sociological and historical perspective. Later chapters examine the origins of the bleary countryside and cityscape of the Krushchev and Brezhnev eras. The volume concludes with a view of contemporary developments--again in a society undergoing fundamental changes--and offers views of possible developments in the next century. The result is the first multidisciplinary examination of housing in all of its varied forms throughout the twentieth century in Russia.
