Novelist Susan Vreeland has made a career of fictionalizing the lives of artists and of particular paintings, like Artemisia Gentileschi¹s magnificent Judith in The Passion of Artemisia. In her third novel, The Forest Lover, Vreeland's subject is the courageous Canadian painter Emily Carr, who traveled through native villages and wilderness of British Columbia in the early 1900s, often alone, on a quest to paint totem poles and other artifacts before the indigenous traditions died out and the poles were destroyed or sold. Vreeland's Carr is deeply respectful of the people she meets, and is rewarded with their trust and their stories. She brings the same sensitivity with her to Paris to see the new art, is exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, and returns to Vancouver in 1912 with a style so direct, and colors so expressive, that a conservative local reviewer dubs her a wild beast, literally, a Fauve. Vreeland's strength is in the tacks of emotion during dialogue, and in her nimble, exact prose. As she depicts her, Carr is an endearing and believable balance of sensitivity and determination‹an artist of life as well as a remarkable painter. --Regina Marler

Book Description

In her acclaimed novels, Susan Vreeland has given us portraits of painting and life that are as dazzling as their artistic subjects. Now, in The Forest Lover, she traces the courageous life and career of Emily Carr, who—more than Georgia O'Keeffe or Frida Kahlo—blazed a path for modern women artists. Overcoming the confines of Victorian culture, Carr became a major force in modern art by capturing an untamed British Columbia and its indigenous peoples just before industrialization changed them forever. From illegal potlatches in tribal communities to artists' studios in pre-World War I Paris, Vreeland tells her story with gusto and suspense, giving us a glorious novel that will appeal to lovers of art, native cultures, and lush historical fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2007-09-29

This was a very beautifully written book that every American and Canadian ought to read. Based on historical records, Susan Vreeland paints a troubling account of how Christian missionaries encouraged and practiced genocide and a small scale holocaust against the natives of this continent. It's not always comforting, but good for one seeking truth. It left me in a state of repentance and confession, ever renewed in my vow to honor and respect the traditions of the natives around me.

4 out of 5 stars A splendidly vigorous read .......2007-08-04

Everyone else has gone into detail, so I won't take up space except to mention that Vreeland's prose is lively, readable, and at the same time beautiful. I enjoyed this book a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Vreeland's Labor of Love.......2007-08-03

In her author's note for The Forest Lover, Vreeland notes that seventeen years' worth of thought, research, and writing went into the novel. It shows. The author's respect and love for the visionary artist Emily Carr shine in every word of this story. Most evocative are Vreeland's descriptions of the landscape of British Columbia; I've never been there, but after reading this book, I felt like I had. While Luncheon of the Boating Party remains my favorite of Vreeland's books because of my penchant for Impressionism, The Forest Lover might be her best in terms of the storytelling and especially its descriptive power.

An aspect of Vreeland's work that I appreciate in all her books is her seamless blending of fact and fiction. Her extensive research is always apparent but never gets in the way of the story she wishes to tell. (In other words, no extraneous bits simply to show off her research!) She is always careful in her author's notes to delineate what's "real" and what isn't (she doesn't try to deceive anyone on these points), and while she isn't afraid to use her imagination in crafting aspects of a story, she remains true to the essence of the person. As Vreeland herself writes in her author's note, "This book is not a life; it is a story." And what a story it is.

5 out of 5 stars "Person with spirit power in the hands.".......2007-06-30

This fictional book is based on the struggles the real life Canadian painter, Emily Carr, encountered in creating and receiving recognition for her work. She went against the conventions of her times (the early 20th Century), and lived life on her own terms. Fiercly independent and brave, Emily traveled alone to the Western Coast of Canada to paint Native American totem poles. She felt strongly that these poles were a "memorial of her country's first greatness", and a record of these poles needed to be made before they were all gone. Eventually, her paintings became more than just a record, as she looked to express in her work the spirit of the subject she was painting.

This book is beautifully written, and the characters are very well developed. Particularly, I really enjoyed the way that Susan Vreeland described the paint colors Emily applied to her canvas. These very visual descriptions really help to emphasize the value and importance Emily placed on color in her work. I also really loved the way that Emily was always looking for the spirit or meaning in her work.

I found this book to be very inspiring, and I am very grateful to Susan Vreeland for introducing me to the world of Emily Carr. I fully intend to do more reading and research on her life and work. This book is highly recommended!!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing portrayal of an artist........2007-05-16

The Forest Lover follows real life Canadian artist Emily Carr who finds inspiration in native art and French impressionists. Vreeland, who doesn't understand how race and gender affect visual representation, creates a character that is well intentioned, yet racist. The Forest Lover audiobook sounds like bad TV, where every Indian possesses magical powers and serves as a bridge between the spirit world for the white protagonists. Reader Karen White's Tonto-esque voices make the native characters sound like dumb children stuttering "Me Tarzan, You Jane!" Even more bizarre is White's over the top French accent used to portray Emily's romantic interest. White's reading sounds like Emily is being seduced by Pepe LePew. Sexualized, native drumbeats make the sex scenes even more ridiculous. Since much of the novel takes place in Paris, the listener is continually distracted by White's clichéd and unintentionally humorous French accent. There is something almost doubly offensive about racism disguised as the story of a progressive feminist heroine.

Prosper le Gai--all Morgraunt before him--rose from his bed before the Countess had turned in hers; and long before the Abbot could get alone with Dom Galors he was sighing for his breakfast. He had, indeed, seen the dawn come in, caught the first shiver of the trees, the first tentative chirp of the birds, watched the slow filling of the shadowy pools and creeks with the grey tide of light. From brake to brake he struggled, out of the shade into the dark, thence into what seemed a broad lake of daylight. He met no living thing; or ever the sun kissed the tree-tops he was hungry.

My story will take you into times and spaces alike rude and uncivil. Blood will be spilt, virgins suffer distresses; the horn will sound through woodland glades; dogs, wolves, deer, and men, Beauty and the Beasts, will tumble each other, seeking life or death with their proper tools. There should be mad work, not devoid of entertainment. When you read the word Explicit, if you have laboured so far, you will know something of Morgraunt Forest and the Countess Isabel; the Abbot of Holy Thorn will have postured and schemed (with you behind the arras); you will have wandered with Isoult and will know why she was called La Desirous, with Prosper le Gai, and will understand how a man may fall in love with his own wife.

Faye Kellerman's latest thriller features Cynthia Decker, daughter of Peter Decker, familiar to readers of the author's previous novels featuring the L.A. detective and his Orthodox Jewish wife Rina Lazarus. In Kellerman's earlier books, we've met Cynthia briefly as a difficult adolescent upset by her parents' divorce and later as an Ivy League college student with an interest in following her overly protective father into the family business: solving crimes. Now Cynthia's a young L.A. cop who's the subject of what at first seems like innocent-enough teasing from her colleagues. They think she's snooty and standoffish and riding on her father's reputation. Actually, she's all of those things, which makes for a somewhat less than sympathetic heroine:
Beaudry said, "Every time we start shooting the bull, talking about the day, you say things like, 'Yeah, my father once had a case like that.'"

                    "I'm trying to relate."

"It pisses people off. It makes them think that their experiences are nothin' special. Everyone wants to feel special. You already feel special because you've got all this college. You gotta remember that the average Joe on the force is a high school graduate, maybe a couple of years at a junior college like me. If you're real smart, okay, you do a four-year state, then enter the academy with the idea of doing the gold."

                    "Like my dad--"

"Stop mentioning your dad. He isn't a legend, Decker, he's a pencil pusher."

As the teasing escalates, Cindy's stalked, threatened, and finally frightened, although it pains her to admit it. There's a killer on the loose, and even if she's not the best cop on the force, she knows enough to turn to her father for help. But first, she has a brief affair with one of the men under his command. It seems a little too obvious a ploy for Daddy's attention and hardly adds to her character--we already know she's immature and a bit of a bitch. But at least this maneuver brings Peter back on the scene, allowing Kellerman to hit her stride as she gets back to a character who holds the reader's interest because he's more than two-dimensional. Sadly, Cindy's not quite ready for prime time; perhaps she'll grow up in her next outing. Or better yet, Kellerman will bring us more adventures by Peter and Rina. --Jane Adams

                    Book Description

L.A. Homicide Detective Peter Decker never wanted the perils of his job to touch his family. But now his two worlds have collided.

A first year rookie with the LAPD's Hollywood Division, Cynthia Decker became a cop against her father, Peter Decker's, wishes. But police work is in her blood, and she's determined to make it on her own -- even now, when her razor sharp instincts for danger are telling her that something is very wrong...

The signs are impossible to ignore: things being moved around in her apartment, the destruction of personal effects. But it's a harrowing trip down a dark canyon road that confirms Cindy's worst fears. Someone fiendishly relentless, and with decidedly evil intentions, is stalking her. And with Peter Decker isolated from her troubles by his own investigation into a disturbing series of car-jackings, it's up to Cindy alone to find out who in her personal and/or professional life wants her frightened or harmed...or dead.

I started reading this series of books in order, and found some of them better than others. The tension and the suspense keep me hooked, even with the flaws. I have just started The Forgotten, and hope it is better than Stalker. I have to put part of the blame on Kellerman's editors, because there are so many loose ends, things left unexplained. That really bothers me. And the over use of the F word gets very, very old. (I frequently eat in the same restaurant with cops, and they really don't talk like that.) I am trying to like Cindy, but it is hard. She is a brat, I can forgive her for that, but to have an affair with Scott Oliver, who is her father's age and a known sleezeball. Eeeeew! Cindy has no redeemable qualities that I can see. I hope that Kellerman can clean up her act and get this series back on track. I don't understand why it is called the Peter Decker Rina Lazarus series, when Rina rarely plays a part in any of the books anymore (like she did before Hannah was born). I love Peter Decker as a character, though. I see Ted Levine (Det. Stottlemeyer on the show Monk) playing him, if the books ever become movies or a TV series. Keep 'em coming, Kellerman! Just make sure your editor does his/her job from now on regarding continuity!

Never a let down. Exciting and quick reads.

3 out of 5 stars Storyline and action a bit of a disappointment.......2005-02-10

This is my first Faye Kellerman book, and ironically, I had just read her husband's book "Silent Partner" before I read this. I expected her book to be as good. It was not a bad book, just not as suspenseful as the description would have you believe.

First off, I don't understand it saying "A Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus Novel." Rina had very little to do with the outcome, other than supporting Cindy a couple times against her father's ire. I know police officers, having been a police reporter, and Cindy didn't ring true as a rookie cop. Some of the aspects of her behavior did seem real, others didn't.

The beginning kind of confused me because it starts out, not with a main character, but with this scary story a woman named Farin was involved in. You expect her to be the main character, but it's rather puzzling that she's not a major part of the book in any way.

Who ended up being the stalker -- not an unusual person, where stalkers go, that's true. Stalkers are often people we know well. It just didn't seem like Mrs. Kellerman did her homework on how stalkers really act. Something just didn't ring true with this person.

I liked the character development of Cindy with her lover, and Cindy with her father and the other cops. The author gave great detail. It wasn't a page-turner for me although I certainly did want to find out what happened. I was just a little disappointed when I got there.

Overall, a very good read and interesting. I just wouldn't characterize it as a thriller.

well..this was my first kellerman's novel and all the characters were very new to me.. I kept on reading and reading for so many days to just read half of the book.. then i got hooked up in the novel.. it has a mundane plot and just like every another detective story where you can easily guess who the criminal is...i knew him even before the story told me... the book is a big dissapointment for my first kellerman's novel.. i am not likely to read any of her other novel again...

I bought this book at random on vacation, looking for good, intriguing books. The summary on the back caught my interest. Well, after reading two Harlan Coben books, this was a big dissapointment. It was okay, and had some exciting moments. First of all, the book is way too long: 442 pages that I wished were about 200. The book has a slow beginning. It took 200 pages for me to become excited about anything in the novel. It is too wordy and goes into too much detail over things of nonimportance, that cause boredom. The caharcters aren't very intriguing, and much of the story seems predictable. After reading Harlan Coben's books that are wonderful from beginning to end and full of twists, this just didn't match up. I will not be buying any more books in this series or by this author. Also, the language became old, as I became tired of seeing the over-used "F-Bomb." This just isn't very good. There are many other mysteries that are much better. I recommend Harlan Coben's Trust No One, Gone For Good, and No Second Chance.

3 out of 5 stars SO SO Book.......2007-03-13

This is a good book if you need help with care plans, but the only problem is that the care plans are in the book based on Disease or Disorder. I think it would be better if they just listed the problem (for example: Fluid volume Deficit) and not make you go searching through the book.

I loved this book! The recipes featured here are very authentic as far as I can see...especially the ones coming from India. Since I'm an Indian I can vouch for its authenticity...I tried the egg curry, egg-fried rice, european rice pudding, yogurt rice, spinach rice(mediterranean) & carrot pachadi..and they are all awesome!

I recently reviewed this book for my ladies group. Some interesting things here, but the practicality of much of it all eludes me. While this may very well be a fun hobby for the 50-something authors (post-retirement perhaps), the costs for the average person to travel around the country to find some of this so-called junk - if one can even find some of it, combined with the costs of shipping it back to your home and then more costs to transform it into newer, improved pieces of junk seem quite prohibitive to me, and overly complicated I have to think. Since many of these items appear to have similarities to various items sold by Pottery Barn and other chic home boutiques, it would seem most practical to simply go this route and spare yourself all other hassles, time , and costs. Just an opinion from someone who bends toward keeping life as simple and uncomplicated as possible. Each to their way as they say.

I bought this book for my daughter who is re-vamping an old house built in 1936. She wants an old farmhouse look and is excited about all the ideas this book has inspired.

I can look through this book time and time again and never get tired of it. The book has PLENTY of project ideas and even explains how to do a few of them step by step. It's more of a place to look for inspiration than a step by step guide, though, so if you want something more instructional this may not be it. For me, it was perfect because they have SUCH unique, original, inventive uses for junk.
The book doesn't just give little project ideas to drop in around the house, it actually shows how you can create several different looks and styles for a living space using...JUNK.
It's just great. One of my favorite books to browse through for inspiration.

One person's trash is another's treasure. That's a fact of life that the Junkmarket gals know only too well. Through their Minneapolis retail store, Web site junkmarketstyle.com, and tireless touring, Sue Whitney and Ki Nassauer have helped countless devotees transform junk into one-of-a-kind furnishings and accessories. Working their magic on every room of the house--from kitchen to home office--they present conversational case studies that introduce the clients and explore their needs. With characteristic humor in tow, they take readers through each renovation adventure, from shopping for recycled materials to the actual construction projects. The gals also include complete materials lists, plus paint chips and fabric swatches, so that everything can be recreated down to the last delicious detail.

                                        Book Description

Logo Design Workbook focuses on creating powerful logo designs and answers the question, "What makes a logo work?"

In the first half of this book, authors Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka walk readers step-by-step through the entire logo-development process. Topics include developing a concept that communicates the right message and is appropriate for both the client and the market; defining how the client's long-term goals might affect the look and needs of the mark; choosing colors and typefaces; avoiding common mistakes; and deciphering why some logos are successful whereas others are not.

The second half of the book comprises in-depth case studies on logos designed for various industries. Each case study explores the design brief, the relationship with the client, the time frame, and the results.

I don't know why the author decieves us wih the word "Workbook." It should be called "about the design of famous logos"

The first 51 pages (of 230) are great. I like the colorful charts and stuff about logo design in the first 51 pages.

The rest is interesting to look at and read, but not what I need and not essential (230 pages long). I am still looking for a book about the logo design PROCESS. It is well designed and has some really great stuff, but still not everything I needed.

ANY AUTHORS OUT THERE? WRITE IT! I need a book which uses about 5 individual designers, their clients, and quotes from both about the process. I want pencil-sketchy looking beginnings. I want stuff about failures as well as successes. I want nitty gritty detail. If you can even include pictures of the designers and clients working together, photos of designers holding up logo proposals in front of a client, that would be great. I know what logos look like. I see them all the time. I do not want to see another book like this that just shows me a bunch of logos!

Another great book from AdamsMorioka. Graphic design geniuses. :) This book is superb-- it tells you what concerns need to be addressed before the design process begins, which was the most helpful part of the book. But the eye candy-- the logos-- were the most fun. I went through it all in a day, but can't wait to study it more intently. This will be a great reference and inspiration to me in my work.

Subtitled "A hands-on guide to creating logos," the book Logo Design Workbook is a must on the studio library shelf of any designer interested in the creation of logos. Now in paperback, this Rockport Publishers offering covers all aspects of identity design clearly and specifically. From "The Ten Rules" to "Implementing Logos," the authors provide a visual smorgasbord of case studies and examples from firms such as Landor Associates, Morla Design, Pentagram, and over 45 other studios of all sizes, in explaining the basics and the idiosynchrocies of the logo design process. This book should be required reading for the students of any educational institution as they begin to study the creation of identities. - Jeff Fisher, Logo Notions/CreativeLatitude and bLog-oMotives

5 out of 5 stars Great resource, even for non-designers.......2005-09-18

A great introduction to logo design process. The first part of the book is about the process and the second part is a catalog of case studies.

This book will not teach you how to draw your logo in your favorite vector-based drawing program, but gives you a bird's eye view on process and it does it great: it is easy to understand and covers important topics as asking the right questions to make your logo successful. Because it talks about the process more, it does not go into details with e.g. typeface and color selection (there are books which cover those topics), but you can see how the complete identity was designed e.g. for Metropolitan Market. Recently I had to work with external graphics professionals to re-design the graphical identity of one of our products and this book's focus on the process has helped me a lot to understand and to set up project requirements.

I recommend this book to anyone who works with designers or interested in logo design.

You will not become the logo master overnight. This book is a decent resource for developing your own thought process in logo creativity.

The book is full of decent examples of "how we got here from there."

It is good reading and very educational but not necessarily a revelation.

                                        Book Description

Grammy winner for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from Disney's 1994 blockbuster movie The Lion King, Elton John is a musician that has transcended generations. Since his U.S. debut 25 years ago, E.J. has had a top-40 hit every year. This first reference dedicated to the legendary singer/songwriter, who has been enchanting fans for nearly three decades, contains hundreds of anecdotes on people, places, and things related to his career. It includes a behind-the-scenes look at every album, a comprehensive list of all songs written or recorded (dozens never released), and the most extensive look ever at E.J.'s pre-career life. Well researched, the volume's rich detail offers a gold mine of Elton John trivia gathered by one of the artist's premier historians and the editor of the international Elton John fan magazine East End Lights. Fans and popular music buffs will enjoy the comprehensive treatment on this 25th anniversary of Elton John's U.S. debut. There are four sections to this encyclopedia: Elton A-Z, featuring explanations, details, and anecdotes related to aspects of his career and life, with entries on celebrity friends, important places, and a wide variety of other topics; Albums, giving a chrononlogical, behind-the-scenes look at his more than 35 albums up to and including 1995's Made in England; Performances, listing his concert tours year by year, highlighting major performances such as John Lennon's final stage appearance in a 1974 show, a 1979 concert in Russia, and a little-publicized 1992 tribute; and Songs, listing alphabetically more than 500 songs recorded or written by Elton John.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK OUT THERE ON ELTON JOHN.......2005-09-07

                                        Dates,songs,eras in Elton's career;it's all here.

The author who did research on this book,Claude Bernardin, did an outstanding job.His research was relentless.

I prefer this book to many others because it is an encyclopedia type book and facts are easily found.

Alot of information on unreleased songs, which is my favorite part of the book.

I recommend this book to all Elton John enthusiasts.

It is a book you must have in your library if you are a die hard Elton John fan.

                                        4 out of 5 stars There's A Mistake.......2004-01-05

While the book is a fun read with Elton facts in alphbetical order, this is a mistake in the book that has just bugged me for a while. The two authors, especially one of them, is known as a major Elton historian. Why then, did he make the mistake?. The error in question is this - In describing the "Honky Chateau" album, it was stated that "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat", the two singles off the album, were Elton's first top 10 singles?. Uh, sorry, but wrong. 2 years prior to this record, "Your Song" was a top 10 hit on the Billboard single charts. How can such a big historian make that mistake?.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on rocket man.......2001-06-19

Mr.Bernardin has shared his wealth of knowledge on the subject of Elton John in a clear, concise and enjoyable format. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to know the all of Elton.

4 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad.......2000-07-21

This book is okay, but not great. It isn't a biography, but rather a compilation of facts about people, events, and things in Elton's life in alphabetical order. It does however give some really good info on Elton.
