Book Description
Japan underwent tumultuous changes in the eighteenth century. The merchant class was rising in power, and the privileges of the professional warriors, or "samurai", were disappearing.
The 47 Ronin Story is the classic story of Lord Asano of Ako and one of the bloodiest vendettas in Japan's feudal history. In 1701 in Edo, Japan, Lord Asano of Ako lashed out at a corrupt court official and set in motion a chain of events that shocked the country and brought the Shogun himself to a legal and moral impasse. When it was over, there emerged the most unlikely set of heroes-the forty-seven ronin, or "ex-samurai", of Ako.

This was an excellent book. I finished it in a weekend! Highly recomend.
Honor and Determination.......2006-09-06
The 47 Ronin Story is a story of honor and determination. In the tale, the Lord Asano is visiting the Shogun's court and is affronted by Kira, the Shogun's Master of Ceremonies. In response, Lord Asano attacks Kira, wounding him but violating the law of not attacking another in the Shogun's keep. Because of this, the Shogun ordered Lord Asano to commit seppuku in response for his affront and confiscated his lands and holdings. At this point, the story of the 47 Ronin truly begins.
The samurai serving Lord Asano learn of the affront to their lord and his being forced to commit seppuku and having to decide whether to obey the Shogun's decree, fight, or commit seppuku. Oishi, the leader of Lord Asano's samurai decides to order the Ako to obey the Shogun's decree but to look to taking vengeance on Kira. To do this, Oishi orders the Ako samurai to disperse, some of whom are to learn what they can of Kira. While the samurai (now ronin since they no longer have a lord) are following Kira though, Kira's supporters are following Oishi to determine if the Ako Ronin are attempting revenge. Taking their time, and moving quietly, Oishi and the Ako Ronin lay plans for vengeance...
While the story of The 47 Ronin is arguably the greatest story to come from Japan, my feeling is that Mr. Allyn failed in capturing the story. Mr. Allyn's telling is to western in it's telling. While Mr. Allyn describes the honor and dedication Oishi and the Ako samurai/ronin had, it's thru the eye's of a westerner and with their dialog. To me, this is like reading a modern telling of the Iliad rather than the classical telling. While the 47 Ronin Story is a classic and worthy of 5 stars, I have say that John Allyn's telling is only worthy of 3 stars.
An OK read.......2006-07-30
I managed to pick up John Allyn's "47 Ronin Story" for a discount price, and recently finished my reading of it. It went pretty fast, and it was somewhat entertaining, but all in all, I was a bit disappointed.
Firstly, the presentation itself is lacking in character. While this may be (and probably is) a deliberate attempt to muster some of the feel of Japanese works, he seems to miss the basic essence of some of those simplified presentations, and the result is a very stacatto feel to events and descriptions of the story. Are we supposed to understand/sympathize with Oishi, the leader of the band, who sacrifices everything for the sake of his lord? It is difficult with the material present. Years seem to pass by in days, and one never really gets a feel for how long these men waited to exact revenge for the death of their lord.
Moreover, there is a distinctive Western feel to the story, particularly the romance between Oishi and his geisha (whose name escapes me). For example, at one point, she passionately throwing the covers off her naked body, she pins him down in the bed pleading with him to give up his thoughts of revenge. It seems very contrived, particularly considering the behavior to which she is accustomed (I apologize if one finds this to be a major plot spoiler, although IMHO, if a book can be spoiled by giving one or two plot lines, it isn't worth it's salt). While Allyn tells us that his story is indeed a fictional interpretation of events whose details are obscured, at best, some scenes simply feel out of place in his own rendition (no other woman in the book acts in this way, e.g.).
However, as I mentioned, the book goes fast (it took me about 3 hours to read it), and it certainly serves as a good diversion (e.g. on a plane flight), but I like my books to have a bit more meat.
A Nice Overview.......2005-12-30
While not hugely detailed, "The Forty-Seven Ronin Story" is a good introduction to one of the central icons of Japanese history. The 47 Ronin have become the embodiment of duty, sacrifice and honour, and deservedly so. This book, while not without its faults, presents non-Japanese readers with a good introduction to the tale.
Essentially, the book stays true to the major details of the 47 Ronin story. It is not detailed, as it is not all that long, but it covers the main points and adds some flesh to the story along the way.
For those not familiar with Japanese manners and courtesy of the Edo Period, the book has no major issues. However, those familiar with these points, will find places where Allyn has taken some liberties and changed aspects of the story. One such point is the attack on the Shogun's courtier and the place where it happened. While not fatal to the story itself, it is noticeable to those with a familiarity with the history surrounding the 47 Ronin.
For a fast, light read, "The Forty-Seven Ronin Story" is a great book that is a great introduction to a fantastic episode in Japanese history. However, for history buffs who have already gained a fair amount of knowledge on this specific episode, you might want to find something else.
For those who want more about the history itself, there is a good selection of contemporary and nearly so sources translated in Hiroaki Sato's Legends of the Samurai. Some of these sources even criticise the 47 Ronin for various reasons.
Great book.......2005-11-29
This is an awesome book. It arrived in great condition, although the book arrived only a day before the maximum time allowed for transactions. I would reccommend both seller and book.
Book Description
Here is an exciting true tale of the famous vendetta of the 47 Ronin, the samurai left masterless after their leader, Asano Naganori, was forced to commit seppuku (suicide) by the court official Kira. For two years the men plotted to avenge Asano's death; with cunning and bravery they succeeded, killing sixteen of Kira's men; wounding twenty two, including his grandson; and cutting off Kira's head and carrying it to their lord's grave. The Ronin surrendered and subsequently committed seppuku; they are buried side by side near their master's tomb, in what is now Tokyo.
Naturally, news of such vengeance and martyrdom spread far and wide, with the Ronin becoming national heroes. They were so popular that their saga inspired a series of kabuki plays, the most successful being Chushingura (Treasury of Loyal Retainers). Many artists produced woodblock prints that portrayed the original events, scenes from the kabuki plays, or the actors. Barry Till, curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and a longtime contributor of articles to Arts of Asia magazine, summarizes the play; prints from the Gallery's collection illustrate the intricate story. As spellbinding as any modern movie, The 47 Ronin will fascinate with its story and appeal with its beautiful artwork.

Woodblocks of the 47 Ronin.......2007-09-07
This book is about the 47 Ronin but does not tell their story in detail. It is about the artwork, in this case woodblocks, based on the scenes from the plays which were made to show the tale of the 47 Ronin. So after the book gives you a very, very short version of the life of a samurai, the tale of the 47 Ronin, and the plays made on it, which gives you a point of reference to work with, you then get to see the artwork based on the plays. Certain scenes and characters have been captured by the artists' skills and woodcraft.
In other words, if you are looking for the complete, well written and detailed story of the 47 Ronin, look someplace else. If you are looking for something related to them, as in how they were seen in the eyes of history and immortalized in plays and artwork, this is the book for you.
okay, but not definitive.......2007-03-31
The 47 Ronin is a truly great story. I keep looking for an outstanding illustrated version. I was hoping this was it, but I was a little disappointed. It uses authentic period images, but they are images of kabuki performances of the story, not images of the story itself. The book I wanted is still an outstanding niche...

A Guy Can't Even Workout In Peace..........2007-03-31
Hi, My name is Robert Wilsop. I swear to God, I was not trying to involve myself in another murder. All I wanted to do that day was work out at the gym with my best friend, Michael. How was I supposed to know that two thugs were stalking one of the trainers and that he would pull some kind of James Bond maneuver, slip some DVD in my gym bag, and tell me he would be back for it later? Well as you can probably guess, that never happened. Someone threw him off his balcony first. Now, everyone and their mother is after me because they want this DVD (Oh, by the way, you would not believe the things on it. I mean really, I could have gone the rest of my life without seeing some local televangelist dressed up in a Superman costume, being slapped around by a guy wearing a leather mask, and chaps. Michael thinks I am a prude. I think he needs Sex Addicts Anonymous). Now, I've almost been run over, my apartment's been broken into, the entire world knows that I forgot to wear underwear the other day, and the cute detective investigating the case wants to ask me out. (Normally, that wouldn't be a problem except that I finally have a boyfriend who isn't an ex-con or married). I just hope that with the help of Michael and my friend Monette, we can figure out who is trying to kill me so I can live to see gay marriage laws pass in New York someday.
I need to be honest: I love this series. There's a lot of action and I laugh all the way through the books, which is something that is really important to me. Truthfully, this book didn't hold my attention as well as the others in the series but I still enjoyed it very much. If you are looking for a humorous mystery that is a fun, quick read, look no further. Stukas is beginning work on a second series so I really hope this isn't the last I hear of this trio.
Stukas Strikes Again With High Camp and Intrigue.......2007-01-25
Ya' gotta' love this guy. He is a fun author, his novels are clever, and the plots so convoluted that the reader is drawn in with every word written. Suffice it to say that modest but gay Robert Wilsop, his self- centered wealthy "sister" Michael Stark, and "save the day" Monette combine to make for a fun story. In reading all of Mr. Stukas' works, I have come to the conclusion that they are as fun as the Thin Man series...Robert is of course Nick Charles, Monette is Nora Charles, and for all of the relevance Michael contributes, he is Asta. (Note: Asta is a Wired Hair Terrier, they are charming, but can sometimes be annoying...so is Michael). Pick this book up for breezy, fun, light reading with an ever wry wink awaiting the reader.
An hour and a half of FUN!.......2005-04-01
Biceps of Death is another pleasurable read by the extraordinarily witty author David Stukas. I have certainly enjoyed his books for the mere reason that they are an enjoyable escape from reality. All his novels are extremely easy to read, yet thoroughly entertaining. I love the verbal aerobics that are constantly flying between the principle characters. If they were real people I'd be more than happy to congregate with them and listen to their banter in person. If you have an hour or two to spend, pick up these books. You will be delighted you did.
Biceps Of Death - A fun read.......2004-11-24
I just finished David Stukas' latest novel "Biceps of Death." It falls into my recent kick of reading gay amature sleuth novels. If you have read any of Stukas' other work you know he has no grip on reality and a very campy sense of humor. If you like the combination of a clueless gay man, a six foot amazon lesbian mystery novel buff with bright red hair, and a sexually compulsive rich leather queen, then you will enjoy all of the books in this series.
With a title like "Someone Killed His Boyfriend" (David's first book in the series), how could I not want to read that book. The title and cover promised a very entertaining and goofy look at the lives of three gay friends that find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation. This book has sex, drag queens, revenge, and very unrealistic look at gay life on the East Coast. Who knows, maybe people really do live like that?
In "Biceps of Death," Stukas has his beloved (except for Michael) characters at it again caught up in another murder. Robert Wilsop, the main character, cannot seem to catch a break when someone slips a mysterious CD into his bag at the local gay gym in Chelsea. His friend Michael, the air apparent to a pharmaceuticals company that makes creams to treat a variety of venereal infections, is helping Robert buff up for his new boyfriend. Robert and Michael unwittingly pulled into an insane murder investigation that includes some of New York City's most powerful men. Poor Robert becomes the main target in an absurd murder plot. His only help is to rely on his best friend Monnette to use here armature detective skills to save Roberts life.
Even though I enjoyed Stukas' last book, "Wearing Black to the White Party," I was not sure what else could he do with the characters. I mean how many murders can someone be involved in without being on the FBI's most wanted list? Well, I must admit he pulled it off in the new book. Stukas manages to get his main characters into trouble, and what make it work are the absurdity of the situations and the sheer dumb luck of his unlucky protagonist Robert. Although this is not the strongest book in the series, Stukas does some good character development of Robert Wilsop as well as some really great one-liners that any drag queen would die to use during her show.
I was a bit disappointed that Monette and Michael remain very one dementiial, because they really do have a lot to offer in terms of the potential richness of their characters. If Stukas puts out another book using these the same three unlucky souls, that he utilizes Monette and Michael to their fullest or he my have to retire them all together.
By the way, not everyone from the Midwest is that neurotic.

Customer Reviews:
Lackluster team up is more of a 90's flashback.......2005-05-21
Remember the countless team up's Marvel would put together back in the 90's featuring the "dark" characters of the Marvel Universe? They mostly consisted of teaming up Wolverine, the Punisher, Ghost Rider, Venom, etc. in relatively lame various mini-series' that were so limited on character and such and more focused on the properties of the characters involved. This recent team up of Wolverine and the Punisher is similar to the aforementioned mini's, only this time poor Peter Milligan (X-Statix, X-Men, Human Target) gets the task of writing this TPB. The unusually gifted writer concocts a tale here featuring Wolvie and Frank going to South America in search of a criminal. Wolvie wants to protect him, and the Punisher wants to kill him (naturally). This all ends in both characters engineering a daring escape, with little point to it all. It's a shame that Milligan has to resort to work like this, even though there are a couple of good action moments, and the art throughout is solid. Fans of either character may want to give this a look, but you're better off with any recent Wolverine work by Mark Millar, or the various TPB's of the Punisher by Garth Ennis.
pretty bad.......2005-04-12
The premise for this sounds intriguing, Wolverine and the Punisher go to the jungles of South America to find a criminal, but one hero wants to kill him while the other wants to protect him. Sounds good, right?
I'm sorry to say that this is a really weak book. It has one of the worst villains ever, Napoleon, complete with the full Frenchie-poo outfit. The Punisher has some god-awful lines like: "This is your Waterloo." ((groan)) The book is totally predictable. Punisher and Wolvie start out at odds, then have to team up to get out of the criminal infested town of Erewhon (the world's most obvious anagram).
The artwork is decent, that's why I'm giving this book a couple of stars.
If you like the Punisher, check out Garth Ennis' stuff. "Welcome Back Frank" and "In the Beginning" are both very good. If you're a Wolverine fan, check out "Origin." Astonishing X-men and Ultimate X-men are my favorite team books with him. I'm not a big fan of the solo Wolverine series.
These team-up books never seem to work. Oh well, there are plenty of great graphic novels out there to choose from.
Happy reading!
just ok ..................2005-02-24
The wolverine/punisher limited series of 2004 presented here in one volume is a slighty disappointing affiar. Thats not to say the story of a sect of criminals building thier own secret santurary to escape the punisher and his like is not an interesting one , its just that its dragged out over a series of issues when just a couple could have done the job. Of course there is the usual fight between wolvie and pun, but its been done before and far better too .(This is the third limited series they have had together never mind the guest apperances in each others monthly books!!!! ) So unless the reader is new to the pair they will have seen it all before ! On the plus side you cant really not get excited about the two hardest bas***ds in the marvel universe coming together to fight a whole town full of "crims". With out spoiling it to much, the story too, does not always unfold in the expected way which adds a welcome twist to the proceedings. All in all if your a fan already you will have seen it (mostly) all before, but if your new you could enjoy the plot and the welcome(odd) bit of humour.

Lots of great helpful information for new vegans.......2005-02-09
Being a vegan I like recipe books that are for vegans, since I don't have to spend time looking for recipes without products from animals.. It can become frustrating when you find a great sounding recipe only to see that several items, which would be difficult to substitute, are from animals.
Vegetarians considering switching to veganism will want a copy of Foods That Don't Bite Back: Vegan Foods Made Simple as the author, Sue Donaldson, has included important information in the section entitled "Why Become a Vegan?" where she looks at numerous reasons why this healthy, compassionate diet should be embraced. In the preface, Donaldson describes the cruel conditions that nonhuman animals enslaved for their flesh, milk and eggs are forced to endure before they are killed. She also provides many arguments as to why a compassionate, vegan diet is preferable for human and nonhuman animals as well as the environment and how it can be attained.
"If you are concerned about the environment, there are a number of dietary steps you can take to demonstrate your concern. The single most important step is to become a vegan. Only by drastically limiting our dependence on animal-based foods can we develop a sustainable relationship with the environment. Another key step is to buy organic produce whenever possible, thus encouraging the agricultural industry to lessen its dependency on chemicals. A further benefit of going organic is that you thereby support what are typically small, family-run farms over agribusiness. Large-scale and intensive farming is responsible for most environmental degradation." (page 21)
Donaldson also provides suggestions and tips pertaining to "raising vegan kids in a non-vegan world" including some of the books and websites listed in the "Resources for Further Reading." She also covers "Hidden Animal Ingredients" as well as where to go online for more information on this important subject. A short section on "Vegan Substitutions for Cooking and Baking" is also helpful.
Donaldson's recipes are varied and are divided into sections on: starters, soups, side dishes, main dishes and desserts. Many of the recipes are easy to make and Donaldson provides variations for several of them.
The glossary of ingredients is informative and provides the reader with definitions for many vegan foods and ingredients. This section will be particularly helpful to those who have recently made the transition to this healthy, kind and environmentally friendly diet. There is even a section on "Vegan Pets."
Whether you are looking for good vegan recipes, reasons why a vegan diet is important or more information pertaining to hidden animal ingredients in foods, Foods That Don't Bite Back is definitely worth a read.
worth reading just for the intro!.......2004-12-01
i have a large collection of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks, so this one tends to just stay buried on the shelf. i can't really vouch for its recipes. HOWEVER: the introduction is fabulous. most veggie cookbooks have an intro explaining the benefits of that lifestyle with some tips on making it happen, but this one is the most inspiring, least judgemental one i've ever seen. i've gone so far as to photocopy it and give it to friends to help them with their transition to veggie-ness.

Organization.......2007-10-06
I saw the author on Clean House on the Style Network and really liked some of her ideas, but didn't realize just how much my life could be changed for the better when I spent the time to organize my life!
The book is worth every penny!
Great organizing tool.......2007-09-15
This book is so thorough. I've organized our dresser drawers like how she instructed, and the results were amazing! Even my husband commented on them, and that is a feat in itself!
Great organizing tips, even if you're already organized.......2007-09-01
I'm a relatively well organized person. I bought this book because I really liked Linda Koopersmith's ideas on Clean House. I've begun to implement some of the ideas she uses and I'm thrilled with the results. I'm gaining back room in places I thought were already well organized. The book is well laid out and instructions easy to follow. Bravo Linda! I'd highly recommend this book to anyone, organized, you can always learn something new, or disorganized, a great place to start.
THAT'S the Linda Koopersmith of it all!!! .......2007-08-14
I fell hard for Ms. Koopersmiths clutter busting abilities on Clean House. I was sorry she left the show. I bought this book with much glee and was THRILLED to see many of "Koops" fabulous ideas. I have a new way of folding clothes thanks to her and I have literally doubled my drawer space as well as seeing all the clothes at my fingertips, no more piles in drawers for me.
This book is SO terrific. I can't WAIT to reorganize my closets now! Do yourself a favor and BUY this book! Even if you aren't a pack rat or drowning in mayham and foolishness, this book will definately show you some very helpful and useful techniques.
An answer to my prayers!.......2007-06-19
My first thought when I read the title was, "Oh, right, like I can use any of the ideas in this hoyty toyty book!" Boy was I wrong. The author suggests products which are easily available, not too expensive, and her easy to follow instructions for folding and storing clothing free up a lot of space in the closet and dresser. I have recommended this book to friends, and highly recommend it to anyone who is organizationally challenged like me!

Trash.......2001-07-19
This book is based almost entirely on accumulating second hand rumors and speculation from other sources and amassing them into what loosely constitutes 'A Book.' The author's only original section comes when he details coming face to face with Mark Wahlberg at a gym. Does he bother to speak to Mark? No? Why? Because the author is spineless. This book is spineless. Definitely bottom of the pile as far as unauthorized biographies go. A disappointment.
And I am a guy too.......2000-09-14

"Don't Call Me Marky Mark" is a great book. It really enjoyed reading about Mark Wahlberg. He is a very talented performer, who has come a long way. If you admire Mark as a performer, you have to read this book. I started reading it and couldn't put it down until I finished it.
