He cannot forget her, and years later, as a rich man, he goes in search of her. The struggles that have made Burma, India, and Malaya the places they are today are illuminated in this wonderful novel by the writer Chitra Divakaruni calls “a master storyteller.”

2 out of 5 stars Melodrama.......2007-08-08

Sorry this book promises much (and does have some good historical research), but it soon lowers itself to melodrama and soap opera. Too many coincidences and cheesey scenes which spoils the deeper story. One of the very few books I have given up on before finishing.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing .. A novel unmatched for it's grand vision and it's execution.......2007-06-11

I have been an avid reader of Indian Authors for a long time now and have now probably read at least dozens of books by various authors ranging from the phantasmagorical Salman Rushdie, the cheeky Upamanyu Chatterjee, the solemn Anita Desai and even the operatic Vikram Seth. However Amitav Ghosh's 'The Glass Palace' stands out even amongst this august company as a novel of unmatched complexity.

Based on the life and family of Rajkumar - a street urchin who finds himself penniless and orphaned in Burma - the sweeping story carries the reader across almost the entire 20th century beginning with the British Invasion of Burma in 1885 and carrying on through till sometime around 1990.

One of the central themes in the book is the role of the Indian Subcontinent as a tool of the British Empire as seen both from the eyes of Burmese residents whose country is overrun by Indian soldiers acting as 'mercenaries' of the British Raj and from the viewpoint of Indian Soldiers who later serve in the Army during World War II but find it impossible to come to terms with the duality of their existence - their ethos teach them to fight and die for country and yet they do not have a country to call their own; they are expected to lay down their lives fighting for the Empire but yet are never accorded the status of equals.

Having grown up in India we are taught (fleetingly) of the role of Indian Soldiers that battled loyally with the British - but the author presents an entirely different view point. Without judging he tries to potray how these soldiers - several of them illiterate and having to choose between a life in the Army or a life of penury - served as proxies for COlonialism and how they helped spread the very empire that holds them captive. He presents through his characters a scathing view of colonialism and tears to shreds some of the post-modern arguments that try to potray British Subjudgation of india in a positive light.

Another theme , very pertinent in light of current world events that "the place of politics.. what it ought to be.. that while misrule and tyranny must be resisted .. so too must politics itself" is one that we can all relate to. He makes a sincere effort to present the excesses of various rulers, governments wittout trying to pass judgement on any of them.

It is also very informative as a view of the role of Indians as Labourers across all of Asia - exploited by their very own, working as bonded labourers, illiterate and poor - slaves by any other means. In this light the book is almost akin to "Roots".

I found this book to be moving on so many levels- its potrayal of the complex human relationships between characters; the amazingly lifelke characters that inhabits its narrative - both dark and amazingly complicated; the everyday themes of survival, trying to get ahead, family and love and betrayal.

Thank you Amitav Ghosh for creating a true Epic.

1 out of 5 stars Not a novel -- a lecture. But not even a good lecture........2007-04-28

First, I must apologize to the lovely person who gave me this book as a birthday present, with a very sweet inscription at the front. I have to be honest about this book, and I have to convince the world not to read it.

A metaphor struck me about The Glass Palace as I was laboring through its final 20 pages. The book reminded me of my friend's college improv-comedy troupe in a striking way: the group had a structure called "Sit, Stand, Kneel," featuring one sitting person, one standing person, and (you guessed it) one kneeling person. Whenever one person changed his position, the others had to respond -- without telling one another -- by changing theirs. But they couldn't just sit down for no reason; they had to provide an extemporaneous reason for their change in position. And since there's really no good reason for most people to suddenly fall to their knees, most of the humor in the structure came from the absurd justifications for their changes in position. A similar improv structure involved three characters, one of whom had to dunk his head in a tank of water offstage and explain upon his return why his hair was wet.

Imagine 400 pages of Sit, Stand, Kneel, performed by the least-funny three people you know in the most earnest way possible. Characters fall in love instantaneously, get married for no reason, and suddenly acquire traits that only make sense because they justify actions that happen on the next page. These characters don't look like actual humans, because the author isn't actually interested in what happens to them. He is a pedant, trying very hard to shoehorn a non-fiction lecture into a novel. Ghosh smears the thinnest veneer of a novelization atop a badly-written sermon on colonialism and its discontents. Characters have discussions about the philosophy of colonialism (quick synopsis: "The industrial worker and the soldier are just as much stooges of a larger system as the colonial subject is of his masters") that are almost as enlightening as a U.S. presidential debate.

So we have no characters, illogical plotting, empty discussions, and a collection of inelegant set pieces. Do you know people who spend hours -- possibly days -- building up to a joke that telegraphed itself from the moment they began? Do you find them tiresome? Do you take every opportunity to grab a snack or use the bathroom while they're talking? Do you force a yawn to cut out of their parties early? That's pretty much the experience of reading The Glass Palace.

5 out of 5 stars A window to the past........2007-04-20

I bought this book for my mom's friend who lives in Burma. I was a little skeptical about the book at first but I thought it might be interesting to learn about our exiled king -- I did not learn much about the king Thebaw and the queen Supayalat in our history class when I was in high school. So, I loan one from library to read it after I sent the book.

I am so glad that I read this book. It was like I was going back in time. My grandparents used to talk about the good old time during the colonial era. I did not understand when I was listening to them because we only learned about the terrible things done by British to my country. I was especially amazed by the description of our Burmese culture and our way of thinking in such accurate details! You have to be a Burmese to appreciate some of our family values.

However, I find the characters and the story line about them to be a bit too dramatic -- I sometimes find myself verifying that the families are not marrying to their own relatives because of many coincidences which are a little beyond ordinary -- but it still makes the boring History stuff fun to read. Sort of like that James Cameron's Titanic -- the love story is cheesy but the cinematic scenes are amazing.

I am also amazed by his accurate description of Malaya since I lived part of my life in Singapore and traveled around Malaysia and have many friend from that country. So, I know well about their food, their way of speaking English, etc.

Reading his description about a typical apartment in Rangoon almost gives me chills and I could recall myself about the time I was enjoying at a birthday party of my high school friend.

If you don't pay too much attention to the soap opera like story and look deep into this book, you will truly enjoy his effort. Especially, if you travel to Burma and meet the local people.

3 out of 5 stars Educative novel.......2007-01-12

This is a well-researched novel concerning a lot of British colonial history of India, Burma, Malay. It also shows the effects of war and imperial savageries on human lives. It becomes too dramatic as we see the characters are too often bumping into each other, thus completing the circle. It appears to me that sometimes the author gets obsessed with history and gets carried away. Histroy drives this novel rather than the characters. Well that may be a problem with historical novels, but the author should make an effort to show off in an artistic and humane way. Otherwise, this is a good novel to read, particularly on Burma.

    Book Description

It's the peak of the tourist season on the beautiful Connecticut gold coast. But this is no ordinary July for the picture-perfect village of Dorset-or for transplanted New York film critic Mitch Berger and his alluring love, Resident State Trooper Desiree Mitry. When famous, and combustible, movie star Tito Molino plunges to his death from a cliff just outside town, Des's investigation-along with a ravenous celebrity press corps and gawkers by the thousands-threatens to reveal secrets too terrible to imagine. 4 out of 5 stars I read this book first.......then started from the beginning.............2006-05-28

I have come to love David Handlers characters, writting style, and subtle way of educating you while giving you a great story. Throwed in with a little odd couple, it plays like a weekly series. With each installment of his series his work is refined. If you have a chance to read Cold Blue Blood, please do. You can see the difference and the growth of his main characters, Mitch and Desiree.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fun Read!.......2005-03-20

This is a fast-paced, edgy, mystery with just enough cynicism, wit and plot twists to entertain even the most well-read mystery fan. It will most appeal to fans of Margaret Truman and Nelson DeMille. It is a perfect plane read.
Bright Shining Star takes place in Dorset, a small New England town that would probably prefer an unlisted zip code. After several of the well-known town secrets are revealed, it is hard not to think of the town itself as a character. Unfortunately for Doset, but luckily for the reader, it's anonymity disappears first with the arrival of a troubled movie star couple and then with a suspicious "suicide." With the help of very engaging characters and edge-of-your seat action, Handler issues the reader a passport to the townspeople's inner lives and keeps you guessing at who may have really done it and why. Having myself grown up in Old Lyme, CT (where Handler lives and writes), I can imagine every aspect of this novel in full-color, real-life detail. His writing is both believable and enjoyable. I look forward to reading more of his mysteries!

    4 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned whodunit.......2004-02-16

Mitch Berger is a transported New York film critic in the Connecticut Gold Coast village of Dorset. He has recently been widowed. Now that the grief has eased he has fallen in love with a beautiful, black State Trooper, Desiree Mitrey who is also a gifted artist. They make somewhat of an odd couple, but prove that opposites do indeed attract.

Famous movie star Tito Molino comes back to Dorset for a visit with his actress wife, a Dorset native. Mitch has given Tito a horrendous review for his latest film. When they meet up at a local restaurant, punches are thrown and blood is drawn. Tito is volatile to say the least. When Tito is found dead at the bottom of a cliff, the focus of the investigation starts with Mitch. Things are never quite that simple especially in a community where bed hopping is a favorite pastime. Mitch is disheartened with his friends when truly ugly secrets surface.

David Handler has created a unique duo as protagonists for his series. It's not often we get a slightly overweight Jewish average joe kind of a guy hooked up with a exotic beauty who likes to rescue cats and create art as much as she likes to solve crime. This is the third in the series; the previous two are THE HOT PINK FARMHOUSE and THE COLD BLUE BLOOD. Each is atmospheric giving you a nice sense of a tiny seaside village. The plots are well crafted. I would recommend the whole series if you want easy readable books. They are a pretty fast read so you don't need a lot of time commitment. The one fault with THE BRIGHT SILVER STAR is that the secondary cast for the most part is not likable. I didn't care too much who ended up the culprit-all the characters were sort of slimy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of a fun series.......2003-11-15

Tito Molina and Esme Crockett are the Bennifer of Dorset, CT. They're famous, impossibly gorgeous and married. They, their publicist, their fans and van loads of paparazzi have descended on the peaceful, posh village of Dorset for a few weeks of relaxation. However, after a midnight extra-marital tryst goes awry, Tito winds up at the bottom of a cliff very dead, the victim of an apparent suicide.

Mitch Berger, newly minted resident of Dorset and movie critic for the New York Times is devastated. Although he viciously drubbed Tito's most recent film, he had gotten close to the troubled young superstar. He felt that Tito was an outstanding actor who was simply wasting his talent on big budget dreck. And there was the little matter that Mitch was the last (well second to last if you count Tito's murderer) to actually speak to Tito.

Enter Des Mitry, Dorset's resident Trooper and Mitch's lady love. Des is called to the scene of Tito's death and is thus pulled into the investigation surrounding what turns out not to be suicide after all, but murder.

Once again Des and Mitch team up to help solve a crime in the elite little enclave known as Dorset.

This book is the third in a series following "Cold Blue Blood" and "Hot Pink Farmhouse." This was quite a fun little book which took me no time at all to read. I didn't really care very much about the characters of Tito or Esme since neither of them were at all sympathetic. But that really doesn't matter because this book, and the two others before it in the series, is really about Mitch's assimilation into the Dorset community and the evolution of his relationship with Des. Murder and Mayhem make for great plots, but the soul of this series is the three main characters: Mitch, Des and the village of Dorset.

The plot of the story is really a by-the-numbers murder mystery. Long time mystery readers or even people with twisty minds will figure out the whodunit (if not the why-dunnit) very quickly. There are the requisite red-herrings and even a secondary plot involving post 9/11 vandalism against a Muslim couple. Who was Tito meeting that night? What is the real nature of his relationship with his wife? Why does Esme's mother hate the snarky publicist so much? Are the Crockets trying to manipulate Des and Mitch by revealing so much so soon? These questions are answered in due time.

In the meantime, we get a picture of a closed and elite Dorset society willing to keep secrets and cover up scandals. We see the imperfections of a so called perfect family and many not so perfect "perfect" marriages. We are witness to the Peyton Place-esque bed-hopping of the residents and the murky tangled relationships that exist. In the midst of it all is Sexy Des, who tries to solve a mystery in her forthright, no-nonsense, take no prisoners manner. And Mitch, whose life-imitates-movies observations often bring the funny. Did I mention these books are quite humorous?

The biggest minus of this book is that I wanted to see more of the residents we'd met in the previous books. This one did bring back Bitsy and her troubled ballerina daughter, Becca. But I really didn't recognize any other Dorseteers from the previous books.

The biggest plus (other than the really cute relationship between Des & Mitch) is the continued evolution of Des' erstwhile partner, Soave. He was a jerk in the first book, by the second book he was actually human. And now in this third book you really actually like him.

    I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful addition to the series.......2003-11-11

I enjoyed visiting Dorset again. Mr. Handler does a wonderful job of creating endearing characters. Although I had very little sympathy for the murder victim, a colossal jerk, I found myself suspecting almost everyone. Reading about the peculiar residents of this fictional town is escapism at it's best. Keep them coming.

This book was very good. I think the author used action to tell her story in a very interesting way. However, the unusual names sometimes confused me. But I did really like the story.

A good debut for this young author. The characters were well developed, the writing was clean and concise, and the story flowed along at a good pace. Actually, at times, it flowed a bit too quickly: I would have like more. My 10 year daughter and I both enjoyed the read. Being an avid reader, I see a lot of potential in future publications from this aspiring author. I look forward to watching Miss Walker grow thru her writing.

This book was well done for a first time writer. II found though that it was a little too optmistic at varying parts of the book (eg: the characters would arive at a city thats all perfect and such)(and how everything seemed to magicaly be going well). This was luckly much less a problem nearing the end of the book.

That was its main drawback, but otherwise I found it an enjoyable trip through the authors world.

          4 out of 5 stars A nice story.......2002-09-18

This book is written by an author who lives in my town, and to be honest I bought the book strictly out of townish loyalty. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the story is quite enjoyable and captivating. The story is quite literally entirely about the two main characters quest. Their journey is one of adventure, with attacks from fearsome desert tribes, and wild Felinae, and also a journey of the heart, with 6 of the characters in the end pairing off. This novel is quite enjoyable to anyone who loves sci-fi and fantasy novels

My classmates had the 10th edition so I knew what it looked like, when it arrived it was nothing like the picture, the book is a 8th ed. I thought it would be okay, but I had a hard time finding the same info from the book that my class had in their book.

While I would like to see more real pics, the drawings do a fine job of identifying the various pumps. Think the glossary could be expanded to include more terms. All in all, I am glad to have the book in my library.

We were very disappointed with the book. We were hoping it would have pictures of old gas pumps and how they should be painted. All it shows is old gas pumps but most are black and white and seem to be drawings instead of actual pictures.

                        Book Description

I always imagine each of the signoras who lived in this house—where she shelled peas, rocked the grandchild, placed a vase of the pink roses. Now I would like to take one of these women back to my house in California to show her how Bramasole traveled to America and took root, how the doors there are open to the breeze from San Pablo bay and to the distant view of Mount Tamalpais, how the table has expanded and the garden has burgeoned…

The “bard of Tuscany” (New York Times) now offers a lavishly illustrated book for everyone who dreams of integrating the Tuscan lifestyle—from home decoration and cooking, to eating and drinking, to gardening, socializing, and celebrating—into their own lives.

When Frances Mayes fell in love with Tuscany and Bramasole, millions of readers basked in the experience through her three bestselling memoirs. Now Frances and her husband, In Tuscany coauthor Edward, share the essence of Tuscan life as they have lived it, with specific ideas and inspiration for readers stateside to bring the beauty and spirit of Tuscany into their own home decor, meals, gardens, entertaining and, most important, outlook on life. In her inimitable warm and evocative tone, Frances helps readers develop an eye for authentic Tuscan style, with advice on how to:

                        • Choose a Tuscan color palette for the home, from earthy apricot tones to invigorating shades of antique blue.

                        • Personalize a room with fanciful door frames, unique painted furniture, and fresco murals.

2 out of 5 stars Really Let Down by this book........2005-12-06

I was so excited when I ordered this book and so let down after getting it and looking it over. The cover is VERY deceptive. This is NOT a style/decorating book. This is the story of a couple renovating a wonderful old home in Tuscany. It is well written and at times charming and warm. It is also often quite boring reading about what stone to pick for the house and who they visited and what wine they drank. It almost seems as if the author were forcing another book out for publication!! There are VERY FEW photos...barely any really in the book. The photos present are of wine, friends, a few of the house and a few of home decor/furniture layout, and food. The photos are very striking and pretty....if you enjoy seeing their friends and not really getting any basic decorating ideas. There are about 30 recipes and photos of the food, as I said above. Some recipes are nice but I really didn't see anything new and inspiring. A good Italian cookbook would be a better investment. As for the cover....it is very deceptive to say the least since it focuses on a very pretty vignette: furniture, art, pottery and style of arrangement. This is most definitely NOT what this book is about. In fact: I found the cover to be the best part of the book. I decided to return it and look for a better book really focusing on design. The author clearly loves Tuscany and if you want a nicely written and warm hearted book to read about hers and her husband's story of renovation, friends and their love of food, wine and Tuscany then you will like this book. It is not a picture book at all but rather a reading book with a story that seems rather forced and often VERY VERY boring and drawn out for the purpose of publication.

ordered book as a gift and at the last minute. Afraid it would not arrive in time but I received it in less than a week. It was securely packaged and looked brand new. Great experience and will definitely order from vendor again

In my opinion Ms. Mayes is doing for the literary world what Thomas Kincaid has done for art.

I was absolutely entranced with Italy after reading UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN.........and equally so with BELLA TUSCANY. I must admit that while I truly enjoyed the photographs contained in IN TUSCANY I was less than satisfied with the written content. I feel that the passion Ms. Mayes felt with her first book, and so openly shared with the readers, has wained with each successive book and she is nothing but commerical at this point.

I feel she has allowed celebrity and money to corrupt her art ..... much the same as Mr. Kincaid. So, when will we see the Bramasole tea towels or the Cortona coasters???

                          Book Description

This book considers the interplay between art and literature by comparing representation techniques in passages from Les Misrables with artistic techniques in selected drawings by Victor Hugo. In both his artistic and literary production, Hugo uses a composite representational strategy that blends verbal and visual elements--attempting to break free of textual and pictorial media constraints. His dual interest in text and image foreshadows contemporary expressive production, which now dominates communication.

this, along with goldman's first book on elvis, is the only literature any elvis fan will ever need. this book suggests that elvis presley intentionally overdosed on prescription drugs. very compelling.

I have been Elvis' number one fan for the past 49 years. I own all concerts, movies, songs, books but I'll never spend a dime on anything Goldman does. There will never be another Elvis in our lifetime or anyone else's. He is and always will be The King. What a lonely life he had to leave but what he left us is a timeless legacy never to be forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars Not Hard to Believe.......2003-09-21

I must admit, I am not much of an Elvis fan. Never have been. I have always thought that Elvis-mania was the product of clever marketing by Col. Tom Parker rather than any truly overwhelming talent on Presley's part. But, leaving aside the merits or lack thereof of Elvis the performer, I can say that it's not hard to believe that Elvis the man had a lot of inner pain. And that this inner pain may have caused him to take his own life. Therein lies the thesis of the book.

I found this little book to be immensely compelling. It's a detailed accounting (based mostly on information from Elvis's stepbrother, David Stanley) of the last 24 hours of Elvis's life. The basic theme of the book is to correct errors from Goldman's previous book (the controversial 1982 biography, Elvis). In the 1982 book, Goldman had posited that that Presley died of a massive heart attack caused by years of drug dependency and eating like a glutton.

Now in this later book, Goldman claims that there were inaccuracies in his previous accounting of Presley's death, and he wants to set the record straight. Now, says Goldman, new evidence (again, mostly provided by David Stanley) indicates that Presley did not die of natural causes, but instead killed himself by overdosing on a stash of drugs that he stockpiled. Supposedly David Stanley, not wanting to see Elvis's name tarred with the brush of suicide, got rid of the needles and drug packets near Presley's body before the paramedics arrived.

The idea that Presley committed suicide is, of course, not hard to believe. Goldman is not the only Presley biographer who wrote of Presley's disturbed state of mind at the end of his life. It is pretty much common knowledge that Presley was depressed, drug-dependent, grossly overweight, and had many regrets about his life and career. And when a person is that despondent, it's no surprise that their thoughts can turn to suicide.

Naturally, diehard Elvis fans detest Goldman and maintain that this book, and the prior book he wrote about Elvis, are (in no particular order): inaccurate; mean-spirited; biased (many claim that Goldman disliked Elvis personally and his dislike for his subject caused him to always present Elvis in the worst possible light).

However, not a single word of either book has been disproven. Goldman is an academic, and his research is thorough, based on interviews who are "primary sources" - in other words, with people who knew Presley best - "the Guys" (a.k.a. his handlers/bodyguards who were with him 24 hours a day). Indeed, a number of the Guys were actually related to Presley in one way or another, and knew him well, from childhood.

So riddle me this: why is it so difficult for fans to believe that their hero was not a god, but rather a deeply flawed human being who battled his inner demons, and unfortunately lost the battle? If Elvis was a depressed junkie who just didn't want to live anymore, why is that something to be appalled at? Again, given what is well-known about Elvis's state of mind at the end of his life, it's actually quite believable.

And...believe it or not, Goldman may actually have written this not because he enjoyed Presley-bashing, but because it was the truth and he called it as he saw it, based on the facts. That is possible.

To quote Shakespere, the uproar this book caused was "Much ado about...." you guessed it. Okay, here's the story- Albert Goldman, a man who disliked Elvis intensely, wrote this acid account detailing The King's most intimate eating, dating, and bathroom habits. Just how Mr.Goldman acquired this information, I leave to one's own imagination. For good measure, he throws in descriptions of Graceland, Elvis' relationship with his mother- in short, his OPINIONS about Elvis Presley. However, through the years the book has taken on a life of its own. People in the "Memphis Mafia" and other inner circles who cooperated with its publication were scorned and cursed as "Judas" by die hard fans, and are to this day. Albert Goldman's book jacket picture was actually fashioned into a bull's eye by outraged Elvisphiles for the throwing of darts. Reading "THE Book", is akin to sacrilege for the Elvis-is-my-life fan, and Goldman is likened to Satan. My opinion? Whether you love Elvis, are indifferent to him, or could care less, this book is like chocolate- you hate yourself for consuming it, but you do it anyway. I was an Elvis fan before I read it, and after. Don't be afraid to challenge your idols. If they're as great as you say, they will stand up to it and it won't shake your admiration. Actually, the book itself is nothing earth shattering, and it certainly isn't one of your timeless classics. It's what it was meant to be- a trashy, dishy gossipfest. It's gotten more attention than it's worth, in my humble view, and so did its author, who, incidentally, was found dead,in his bedroom, bloated and under mysterious circumstances, an irony that was not lost on me.

Like it or not, this book was at times pretty entertaining, sad and shocking. I love Elvis(been to Graceland)and i don't like him portrayed as a pathetic man.Reading this book made me sad more than anything else.I don't believe that Elvis committed suicide, he was so sick he didn't need to.I also don't have any faith in the sources Goldberg uses throughout the book. I liked the picture of the floorplan of Graceland in the middle. So, make up your own mind.
