Truly wonderful ! .......2007-02-04
Perhaps the best book in the entire world to keep in your bathroom or by your bed!! I can't say enough about how spectacular this book is. Whoever put it together is a genius, a man above men, a hero to the little people of the world who might never learn about some of the topics of this book if it weren't entitled "BATHROOM BOOK". Thanks!
The Title Says It All.......2007-01-04
This is THE BEST book for your bathroom. It was a permanent fixture at my grandparents' house, so I bought one for myself when I became an adult. There are several different sections of the book, all of which are informative and educational. This is a great book to have if you want to know a little bit about everything: the rules of football, the plot summary & commentary of To Kill A Mockinbird, the lifetime achievements of Ghandi, etc.
vol 1, bathroom book.......2005-07-04
Their first shipment was damaged and returned to vendor, whereopon they refunded charge. 2 weeks later I was suprised to receive a nearly new copy.
Great to Deploy With.......2004-12-20
I'm retired from the US military. When I was deployed on Operation Joint Endeavor in support of the Bosnia mission - I tucked this book into my ruck sack. The book was well read not only by myself but by others in the unit. The once-over-the-world summaries gave a much better understanding of books and plays we would otherwise not have read. My thanks to the author.
Refresher.......2003-04-04
This book is a great for refreshing your memory about general knowledge. It surely helps pass that time on the throne.

Customer Reviews:
Intriguing and interesting!.......2007-08-13
Alexander's Sir John Fielding series is pure delight for me. I love his mix of real historical people with his fictional ones. In this one we are introduced to Benjamin Franklin. The book is set around the latter part of 1773 and that is the year of the "Boston Tea Party". We get an insdider's view of this historic event from the eyes of Englanders. We also get the Englishman's viewpoint of the emerging bid for freedom from the American colonies. There wasn't much mystery in this book though. The story was more about the undercurrents in government when a major crown-held colony is making steps towards sovereignty. Jeremy comes into his own in this book, and we see him take more resposibility in Sir John's life. He is a truly appealing narrator, and I enjoy these books.
Not his best.......2005-03-11
The story "An Experiement in Treason" was by no means the best of the series. The story is a little slow and not much excitement is happening. The reader is left with little sympathy for the murder victim and thus not much interest in solving this crime.
Benjamin Franklin is being portrayed as a bumbling fool who at best is just full of air. He was apparently terribly afraid of the magistrate, to be found in the worst of pubs, drinking and in the company of whores (several at a time!) and at other times making advances to an underage girl while eating at her guardians dinner table. His scientific experiements where foolish and, of course, did not amount to much. Even I, who is not an american citizen, must say, that Alexander seems to have a chip on his shoulder about this particular part of Anglo/American history. I loved almost all the other stories in this series.
Not up to par for this excellent series........2004-09-22
AN EXPERIMENT IN TREASON is a rather weak addition to this fine series. Basing the case on actual historical events involving Franklin and some rather interesting letters that became available for public consumption in the states; Alexander had a good idea, but the execution is lacking. Franklin comes off as a caracature of himself, a bit of an old lech, (which he may have been but I believe he may have been a bit more circumspect in an unfamiliar environment like Sir John's home.)who was rather lacking in the wit or the intellect that is so celebrated in many of his biographies. Even the tales involving Sir John's household were particularly weak, involving an unfortunate return of Lady Fielding's son from the navy. While I appear to be in the minority on this one; I feel this book is lacking the quality of mystery and character development that is the norm for Alexander's generally excellent historical mysteries.
Nice Entry.......2004-06-28
This is the ninth entry in the Sir John Fielding mystery series and will be the penultimate as the author passed away earlier this year. There is a tenth, and last, book available.
In the book, Fielding and his apprentice Jeremy Proctor are investigating the theft of some letters from the residence of a high-ranking official in London, an official that is dealing with the American colonies. The time period being pre-Revolutionary War means that the letters are related to the Americans creating problems. Benjamin Franklin appears and plays quite a major role in the book and I like the way the author fleshed out his character, showing both his genius and his faults (mainly his womanizing).
While there is not a lot of action in this book, the period descriptions make up for that. As well, the furthering of Jeremy's personal relationships makes this one of the better and more interesting books in the series and that is saying a lot considering most of the series has been excellent.
Skillful Blend of Fact and Fiction.......2004-01-02
Like most other reviewers of "An Experiment in Treason," I have also read all of the earlier books in this series. I too found this one to be one of the best in the series. Bruce Alexander (who are you, anyway?) is an excellent writer, who combines well-crafted mysteries with an evocative feel for eighteenth-century London. It has been interesting to see how the relationship between Sir John Fielding and Jeremy Proctor has evolved. I especially enjoyed this volume in the series because of the introduction of Benjamin Franklin. Earlier this year I visited Philadelphia and I bought the first in a series of mysteries featuring Benjamin Franklin as the detective ("Benjamin Franklin Takes the Case," by Robert Lee Hall). That book reminded me of Bruce Alexander's series because Franklin has a young assistant, Nick Handy, who plays a similar role to that of Jeremy Proctor. So in this book, it was fun seeing Franklin as the subject of an investigation, rather than the instigator of one. I highly recommend all of the books in this series, with "An Experiment in Treason" near the top of my list for favorites.
Product Description
The Fielding mysteries are a magical combination of period ambiance, vivid characterization, and intriguing plotlines. In the ninth of Alexander's acclaimed novels, Sir John Fielding, the blind eighteenth-century London judge, and his young assistant Jeremy, investigate the mystery surrounding a packet of letters that has been stolen from the London residence of a prominent official- and that turns up in the colony of Massachusetts. Why are the contents so compromising? Why has a suspect in the theft turned up dead? And what should Sir John do about his feeling that Benjamin Franklin himself is somehow complicit? While the political tensions rise, Sir John searches for answers and finds that justice isn't always served by the letter of the law. "Wonderful!" (The New York Times Book Review)
Customer Reviews:
Mysterious and elegant.......2006-09-16
I bought this book wholly on the strength of the Schuiten artwork, even though the story looked a bit bland. I was half right: the artwork is great, and the story is anything but bland.
Protagonist Franz is recruited by a faux-Victorian ruling committee to spy on the mysterious city of Samaris. The delicate Schuiten linework and subdued Schuiten palette capture the culture's elegance and restraint perfectly. In an oddly eventless quest, Franz arrives at Samaris. The city and its people baffle him, the city with its mysteriously blocked doors and windows, the people with their mysteriously blocked repertoires of action and feeling. After some time, Franz discovers the impersonal horror of Samaris, and drives himself to the limits of endurance to report back on what he has found. There, in the last few pages, the mystery doesn't just deepen, the bottom falls clean out of it.
This slim book combines elements that appear in other Schuiten work. The people are pre-technological or non-technological, but the world around them rises from a base of mysterious technology - or is it just technology? I should have known, having read the Schuitens' "Hollow Grounds," that action isn't part of their style. Instead, it's thoughtful and layered, and far better than any Bam-Pow comic around.

Excellent on the whole........2001-05-28
This story works beautifully once you've finished reading it. Memorable in an unusual way, I find. Often wonderful. As good as "The Tower" (by the same authors). Recommended.

Great Layout !.......2007-09-29
Great layout, great pictures, and great information! This book has a nice selection of fruit drinks and vegetable drinks as well. Each drink has a 5 section, 5 star rating. There is a spot on nutrition so you know the vitamins and minerals you are getting. A great book to keep you healthy!
This book.......2007-01-13
Is a lifesaver. From getting so overwhelmed with the exotic concoctions in the juice/smoothie books which sit on my shelf, I happened to pick this one up at the local juice bar. The girl there apologetically said it wasn't for sale, but from what I read whilst standing there, I have to say I have never had a book impress me so much in so few seconds. I ordered one, and the rest is history.
1. Brilliant,logical layout
2. Non overwhelming recipes (for those of us who don't want to live in the kitchen)
3. Surprisingly informative, from the basic fruit/ veg nutritional facts at the start to the 1 to 5 star rating after each recipe. Brilliant.
I love this book. It is my favourite, and as a raw foodist, I have stacks of books.
If you buy it, you'll see what I mean.
excellent juices.......2006-01-05
I recently bought this book and so far I really love it and enjoy every juice I make. I love the idea that she arranged the juices by the kinds of fruits and veggies you want to use and that every juice has ratings for immunity, detox, skin, energy and digestion.
I higly reccomend this book.
Very few ingredients needed for tasty smoothies.......2005-10-02
Originally I bought this book for my father in law, who is a cancer survivor and on a liquid diet. I thought the immunity and energy smoothies would help. He loves the book, b/c he was trying to create his own smoothies, with some gross results. (not to mention a huge waste of money on the ingredients!) Then I decided to buy the book for myself. Last year I had purchased a $$ vita-mix blender from a home show and had never used it..(which pissed my husband off immensely) The book of recipes it came with had so many ingredients, some, in which my opinion werent the healthiest. This book is excellent, with most smoothies having just 3-4 ingredients! Our fave is Morning Mash, with an orange, 2 bananas, a pear and 8 tbsp of apple juice! Delicious!
The Big Book of Juices and Smoothies: 365 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day.......2005-08-04
I love this book. It has nutritional info, tells a lot about different fruits and the recipes are fantastic.

James Villas has been obsessed with biscuits his entire life. Now that he's grown up, he has sampled and baked countless batches himself, which makes him eminently qualified to present the very best recipes in Biscuit Bliss. Yum!
Customer Reviews:
Mmmmm... Biscuits..........2006-12-03
Whether you like your biscuits made with shortening, butter, lard (believe it or not, lard has less cholesterol than butter), or some combination of the above, you'll find plenty in here to suit you. There are even a few recipes that use whole-grain flours such as whole wheat. Many of the recipes include historical or personal notes that are fun to read and add interesting background to the process. Helpful hints include tips on freezing biscuits, as well as the all-important note for Northerners that finally saved my biscuit attempts when Alton shared it: if you use hard Northern flour, substitute cake flour for some of it.
The book includes plain raised biscuits, flavored biscuits, drop biscuits, cocktail and tea biscuits, scones, and recipes that allow you to cook with biscuits. There are plenty of hearty recipes in here such as biscuits with bacon and cheese in them (one of my favorites). There are also more subtly-flavored choices such as the parmesan-herb drop biscuits and the sweet potato biscuits (which work surprisingly well with canned pumpkin). The scones are far better than any commercial scones I've had before--not too sweet, not too dry.
Whether you want to go all-out with biscuits fried in lard on the top of the stove or make something out of buttermilk or whole grains; whether you prefer traditional favorites or unusual combinations such as parmesan and chutney--you'll find the perfect never-fail biscuit recipe in here. And that's definitely biscuit bliss!
Ideas that will improve your biscuits.......2005-07-01
Why would I go out to buy a whole book, even if it's a fairly small book, just on something so simple as how to make biscuits.
Because I've never been happy with the biscuits that I've made. The ones made by my grandmother, let alone the ones made by the grandmother of a friend of mine, are so much better than the ones I've been able to make.
I found though, that Mr. Villas has the same problem. In his case it was a great-aunt. She threw in a little of this, a little of that, put them in the oven, and then without even looking to see if they were ready, she'd take them out -- perfect biscuits. ==Instead, the rest of us have to follow recipes, try this, try that and finally come up with biscuits that at least begin to approach grandmothers.
Here in this book is several pages of what you might call biscuit lore -- what kind of fat, yeast, flour (where do you get Southern flour made from soft winter wheat). Well you can order it through the mail, but you pay $7 for shipping $2 worth of flour -- that's OK, it's worth it, after all, that's the way you have to order good quality grits.
I haven't tried all 101 'foolproof' recipes in the book. But I think that this mornings batch is the best I've made yet.
Specifically compiled for dedicated biscuit lovers.......2004-05-06

Great American Answer to Tapas and Mezes.......2004-04-10
James Villas is an old school culinary writer. He was a friend and confidant of both James Beard and Craig Claiborne. He was born and raised in North Carolina and many of his books have featured Southern cooking subjects and styles. This book is no exception.
The book is an almost perfect follow-up to his last effort, `Crazy About Casseroles' in that both books deal with a single subject which is at the core of both Southern and American cooking styles. I am especially fond of single subject cookbooks, whether the subject is a style of dish like gratins and casseroles or an ingredient like potatoes or eggs. Therefore, the score of this book starts with a score in my mind of four (4) stars instead of three (3) before I even read the first page.
The book's subject can be divided into two major topics. The first topic is basic biscuit techniques, covering all the variations in flour, leavening, fat, oven temperature, and dough versus batter. The second topic deals with how to apply all those various techniques to sweet and savory additions.
Techniques are covered in Chapters on `Biscuit Basics', `Plain Raised Biscuits', and `Drop Biscuits'. The greatest virtue of basic biscuit technique is its simplicity. This does not mean a person can make good biscuits, much less make good biscuits on the first try, after reading a single recipe that gives no insight into biscuit subtleties. The first batch of biscuits I made a few years ago was from Jim Villas' mother's recipes he published in his memoir `Between Bites'. I confess that the process had me puzzled, sticky, and a bit disappointed, even though I am sure I followed the instructions to a tee.
Part of the puzzle may be due to the fact that making biscuits is a lot more like making pastry than it is like making bread. While bread is vigorously kneaded to develop gluten and the starting mix of ingredients is often warm to accommodate the yeast or other organic starter, biscuits are worked with cold ingredients and low protein (soft) flour. The dough is worked hardly at all and is cut into disks while the fat is still in oatmeal flaked globs. Sounds like pastry to me.
As I have had a fair amount of experience with various recipes from both Southern bakers and baking experts, I can say with confidence that Mr. Villas knows his stuff when it comes to biscuits. I thoroughly endorse his recommendation to use a brand of Southern soft flour such as White Lily. I only have two disappointments with the discussion of techniques. First, Villas describes a classic Southern method of biscuit making wherein the cook empties an entire 5 pound bag of flour into a bowl, adds wet ingredients, salt, and leavenings, and creates a ball of dough in a depression in the dough. Yet, Villas does not give us the recipe for this technique. He doesn't even explain why he doesn't give a recipe. I know there are still serious Southern cooks who use this technique, as I saw one demonstrate the technique on Martha Stewart's show about a year ago. The second disappointment is that he has no basic recipe where the only fat is butter. I have used such a recipe by Nick Malgieri with White Lily flour and buttermilk, and I find it as good or better than Villas' mother's recipe. Otherwise, I think the coverage of biscuit techniques is tiptop. Were I writing the same thing, I may have included a table comparing the recipes. This may facilitate one's personal experiments in the technique. I would also argue that basic biscuit technique is a better starting point for adolescent bakers than the drop biscuit technique. I don't think drop biscuit technique is easier and the basic technique is more versatile.
The second main subject of the book is what you can do with biscuits and biscuit dough. This can be divided roughly into four areas: sweet additions, savory additions, scones, and biscuits as pastry. Appropriate to the title of this review, the range of variations possible in biscuits gives me the idea that a home entertainer can give all their books on French and Spanish and Italian and Greek `little bites' recipes a rest and spend several months experimenting with hors d'ourves / antipasti / tapas / Mezes based on biscuits. As soon as I write this, I confess that even the lightest biscuits may be a bit heavy to stand alone among the martinis and margaritas, but I do suggest that you give the pizza and foccacia a rest and give these recipes a try. As biscuits, like chowder, are very close to being a true American invention, they are perfect as part of American cooking menus.
While I am often surprised at how new many kitchen techniques such as baking powder are, I am also often surprised at how old some methods are. Many techniques such as cooking in a bag and using packaged dough as stew topping are touted as new ideas based on marketed products, when actually the techniques are centuries old. Such is the case with using biscuits as a topping for pot pies and casseroles. Villas raises the veil from our eyes in revealing the historical sources for these old biscuit techniques.
I liked this book a lot and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to master biscuits and who may find a gold mine of quick, relatively easy recipes with a big `wow' factor.
Highly recommended. Intermediate skill level.

Customer Reviews:
Not very useful for my home.......2007-07-01
I ended up donating this book to the library book sale. The ideas were not practical for a "regular" house (and I have old wood floor painted bright red, so I am not totally traditional) and I am sorry I bought it without looking at it first.
Perfect Subtitle.......2006-11-10
Exactly right: no faux painting here, just good ideas for all kinds of rooms. Loved it.
Lots of Ideas Here.......2006-03-03
This book has lots of ideas, some quite unique, for decorating your walls. Unfortunately some are so unique that they edge over into the weird territory. In Fong's case, this happens with:
*the sticky note covered wall
*the compact disk covered wall
*a gray wall with a grid of yellow envelopes containing orange notes
*stapling pages of a book in a scattered way on a wall to make it look like they blew there from a book on the table
Maybe some designers are trying too hard to be novel and to stand out from the crowd.
This book is written for teenage girls.......2005-11-02
The book has few inovative ideas. Come on Spirograph and sticky notes on the wall...Watch a few shows on the home and garden network for better more unique ideas and save the $20.
Amazing creativity!.......2005-10-29
I loved this book. The ideas were amazing -- I never thought I'd find so many creative ideas that I would be excited to try. The format is very thorough and easy to follow with great photography, so that even I feel I can actually do it despite not being very handy. And Jonathan's dry wit throughout makes the book a fun read. I'm sure I'll be referring back to this book many times over the years.
Book Description
Everyone knows that a picture tells a thousand words. But what about the elements that make up a picture? Using the tale of Little Red Riding Hood as an example, Molly Bang uses boldly graphic artwork to explain how images--and their individual components--work to tell a story that engages the emotions: Why are diagonals dramatic? Why are curves calming? Why does red feel hot and blue feel cold??First published in 1991, Picture This fans will welcome the new edition's striking redesign and introduce its insights to many other artists and art appreciators alike.?
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2007-07-18
I can't say I'm overly well versed in composition, namely because most books on the subject are so dense. But in Picture This, the author has found easily understandable way to show the basic fundamentals of art.
Rather than teach composition with diagrams drawn over old master paintings like some books, Molly Bang uses simple bits of paper to demonstrate how shape, color and placement can affect the mood of a picture. And once you understand these principles, it's easy to see how they can be applied to more complex artwork.
Bang's pace is very deliberate. Every change to her construction paper compositions is well documented and explained. It's that simplicity and directness that allow her to communicate such a large amount of knowledge in only 96 pages.
And don't let the short page count and the fact that this book is recommended for grade schoolers fool you. This is a book every artist should have her shelf.
Fantastic book!.......2005-08-04
This book is amazing...the illustrations are simple, clear and compelling and the narrative approach to understanding the art elements and principles makes this rather dry topic into a fascinating tale. I have purchased several copies of this book for friends and plan to use it in my middle school art classroom.
for grownups, too.......2004-12-13
Don't be misled by the simple pictures and storybook style into thinking this a just a book for children. I have given this book to several adult friends, including some who are professional artists. We all learned something from Molly Bang's clear and compelling explanations of the principles of visual composition.
Picture This: How Pictures Work.......2003-08-01
I love this book and using it for teaching basic design ideas...a fellow teacher uses it in Psychology! The simple story of Little Red Riding Hood serves as the basis for discussion how line, color, shape, etc. work in art. Such a great idea...wish there were others of this type. I will be using it to teach the elements of art in Art History this fall.
Photos tell more than thousand words-here is the answer why!.......2001-05-28
Using the story of Little Red Riding Hood this book is focusing on the basic principles of composing images.
Reduced to the maximum and using simple colors and arrangements of basic elements like circles or triangles, the drawings as well as the short, precise text within this book are pointing out, how simple and complex arrangements within pictures work, transfer obvious (and hidden) messages, how philosophy and psychology witin pictures works. Therefor its a book telling the story why pictures may lie, may influence, may manipulate an observer even though obviously just showing "reality".
Whether you are taking photographs, drawing or designing - this book is a absolute must! A photo/image tells more than thousand words - here you will find the answer how and why. Great to read and watch, easy and fast to understand - even though dealing with a most complex matter.
Finally a personal statement and hint for an esthetes: if you like to possess a book with an outer shape and appearance that promises, what the contents keeps, than you have to buy the nice hard cover version instead of the cheaper soft cover version - it will pay off for sure.

Making Waves captures the spirit and courage exhibited by the 50 greatest women in television and radio. It highlights the pioneers, both well-known personalities and behind-the-scenes movers, who've made it happen. Those featured were selected by the AWRT membership, based on their industry impact, audience influence, assistance in advancing women, and vision for the future. Honorees - from Lucille Ball to Oprah Winfrey, from Barbara Walters to Martha Stewart - are treated with a biography, photos, and a personal essay recalling the defining moments of their careers. New insights into these women's lives and careers will surprise readers!
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful for Education & Empowerment!.......2002-04-24
Women have come a long way in many fields, in part, because of the efforts of many of these 50 courageous women. This is a wonderful book, fascinating backgrounds and photos of our most beloved pioneers. It would also make a lovely gift for any young woman starting out who doesn't even realize the opportunites she has now because of those who went before and blazed the trail. Congratulations, beautifully done!
Jacqueline Marcell, Author, "Elder Rage, or Take My Father... Please!" and Host of the "Coping wWth Caregiving" Internet Radio Program
Inspiring!.......2002-04-24
These women paved the way for all women in media today and forever chaged the landscape of what we hear and see. They have influenced our culture and served as inspiring role models for women. Their stories of perserverence and triumph should make us all grateful for the wonderful women who came before us to open the doors of diversity in all career areas.
Amazing Stories.......2002-04-11
This book tells the inspiring tales of some of the most remarkable women of our time who would not be discouraged when told that they could not make it in a man's world.
