In this engaging story of Jared, a Red-Jeweled Warlord and unwilling pleasure slave, Bishop returns to the world of her Black Jewels trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness). Jared, who has murdered his owner and attempted escape, is recaptured and sold to the mysterious Gray Lady. It soon becomes clear that Jared's new queen is not what she seems to be, and he joins with his fellow slaves--all of whom hide their own secrets--to protect the Gray Lady. During her desperate flight from Dorothea SaDiablo, the Black Widow intent on destroying her and claiming her territory, Jared comes to terms with his own demons and discovers what it means to be truly bonded to a queen.
Bishop uses her usual skill to move interesting, rounded characters through a well-drawn world. Although this is a standalone book, there are ties with the events of the trilogy, most especially the appearance of the compelling Daemon Sadi. The author still pulls no punches in describing the sexual violence and misery that are as much a part of this intricate world as the gender role-reversals and the often-agonizing demands of honor and magic. A pleasurable read for fans of emotionally charged fantasy who enjoy both complex characters and societies, and who are not averse to following characters through their struggles and achievements. --Luc Duplessis

Anne Bishop is my new best friend LOL.......2007-04-10
I did not know about the Dark Jewels Trilogy until after I had read Dreams Made Flesh, which I absolutely love. After devouring the trilogy in less than a week, I wanted more stories about the three realms. So I bought "The Invisible Ring".
This story is set in the time after Tersa has told Daemon that the living myth will soon arrive, but before Jaenelle was ever born. In fact, in Queen of the Darkness, the man Daemon says left him the secret to how Jaenelle could wipe out the taint in the blood, that man is who this book is about.
To me it started off a bit slow, but in a familiar place: The salt mines of Pruul. Jared, a Red Jeweled Warlord Prince, considered dangerous and troublesome by the queens, gets bought by The Gray Lady. The fact that not much is known about the Gray Lady, only that she opposes Dorothea SaDiablo, makes her all the more frightening to those who have been bought as her slaves.
Through twists and turns on the journey towards the Gray Lady's home, secrets are kept that put the Gray Lady in danger. And yet she has a few secrets of her own.
Once I got to about the twentieth page, I was hooked (as I said, it was a little slow for me). It helps you understand better what Jaenelle did to save Kaeleer once you have read about the Gray Lady, Jared, and his invisible ring.
Great book, like all of Anne Bishop's books so far!
Disappointing.......2007-02-19
This was the first book by this author that I had started to read. Perhaps, that was my first mistake. I truly did not like this book -- the characters, the plot, the overall language in the book -- all disgusted me. I could not bring myself to finish the book. If the rest of this author's books, are anything like this one, I think I will be avoiding this author's work.
Okay but no BJT........2006-04-23
I've read the entire Black Jewels Trilogy and loved it so naturally I picked up this story with the same expectations. However, the book read like a short story with 417 pages. It lacked the depth and intrigue that I'd become accustomed to with Anne Bishop.
If you read the Black Jewels and loved them then I recommend picking this up for the simple pleasure of seeing the Sadist (however briefly) and returning to a world you loved. But if you haven't read the other BJT books than go read those because you'll find little pleasure in this one.
Enslaved Warlord Finds Freedom & Love in Prologue to Black Jewels Trilogy.......2006-04-21
Fantasy novel THE INVISIBLE RING by Anne Bishop is a prologue to her beautiful and moving BLACK JEWELS TRILOGY, where powerful female witches rule the land and dangerous warlords serve them, in the bedroom and out.
In the INVISIBLE RING, Jared is a warlord who was tricked into serving as a pleasure slave for 9 years. Unable to bear the abuse any longer, he kills the queen witch who has enslaved him and is now sent to the slave auctions. There, the infamous and dreaded Grey Lady purchases him and several other slaves, and they begin a journey filled with mistrust, danger, upheaval, and deceit. Yet, they learn to work together, and Jared soon discovers that the Grey Lady is not what she seems.
This was an engaging story, and it was fantastic to revisit Bishop's world of dark-jeweled witches and warlords. I also enjoyed learning a little more about gorgeous, wicked Daemon Sadi (of THE BLACK JEWELS TRILOGY), who pops up here and there in several scene-stealing moments.
The only thing I didn't like is the rushed feel of the novel. For one, it briefly introduced the numerous slaves and other characters, who I couldn't always keep track of or distinguish from one another. That was distracting. I also felt some scenes were skimmed over, especially the final battle scene. But those aren't terrible flaws, and they didn't prevent me from enjoying Jared's story, which revolved around him earning his freedom, falling in love, and learning the secret of the invisible ring.
I'd definitely recommend this book for those interested in THE BLACK JEWELS TRILOGY and its follow-up, DREAMS MADE FLESH.
Good Introduction.......2006-01-17
i read the trilogy first, and i picked this up because of that. While i understood the trilogy, this book did spell out the in's and out's of the fantasy world. The people in this are more normal for the land rather than being the most powerful as the Trilogy is. Overall, this was a great book the base is very welcome, and i LOVED this book.

Dubos: The REAL artist of communications!.......2000-06-14
You can count me "a disbeliever" of most things, but, I was talked into Feng Shui by my friends. At the suggestion of a colleague here in DC, I contracted with Ms Dubos to have a look at my Alexandria townhouse (she was most professional and most reasonable). Ms Dubos made some recommendations; I implemented them; and I am astounded to acknowledge: My home FEELS better! Ms Dubos is now highly recommended by ME also! This is GREAT stuff ! I did read her book trying to understand what she meant when she was working and found it an excellent companion to what she told me. Se is a professional!
Praise.......2000-04-29
I have been a client of Denise's for several years now, and I'm so glad to see her put into print her gifts and her expertise. She has an amazing talent for feng shui and also "seeing" beyond the normal, and she has helped me tremendously in personal matters. Now I have "Denise in a book" for ready reference, because I can't possibly remember all the wisdom she shares with me! Thank you, Denise, and I look forward with great anticipation to your next work.
Fung Shui the Invisable Art of Communication.......2000-04-23
I have read a number of books on the subject both from the India perspective and that from China. This book address the subject with great detail, expertise, and insight into this ancient wisdom. It is a bearth of fresh air to see such a work-out there that any one can pick up and read and put to work in their life, thus bringing health, happiness, and prosperity to ones life and family.
Finally ! A book on Feng Shui I could understand !.......2000-04-22
There is so much hyperbole in this genre of subject (meaning people writing books to make money, rather than trying to convey meaning), it was a REAL PLEASURE to raed this fine book. The author's sensitivity and accumen on ths subject is outstanding! And she conveys her ideas in understandable English! My only real disappointment is that, having done this, I could find no other books by this author, Ms Dubos. Hopefully she will rectify this and I will be the first in line.
Feng Shui the Invisable art of Communication.......2000-04-22
The art of Feng Shui is relatively new to the US, Denise Dubos' release of "Feng Shui the Invisable art of Communication" is very easy to read and understand. The principles described are easily put into practice and the book remains a good reference guide for any future questions that might arise from using Feng Shui. I would recommend this book to any one with an interest in Feng Shui, it is concise and in easy to understand terms.

Book Description
Things in the town of Stone's Throw, South Carolina, rarely get much spicier than the extra red pepper Lucy Nan Pilgrim sprinkles into her homemade cheese straws. So when an elderly but surprisingly childlike woman calling herself Shirley shows up on Lucy's doorstep looking for her mama, Lucy thinks it must be another of her friend Ellis's pranks. But Ellis doesn't know a thing about it, and what's more, the two suspect the woman might be Ellis's cousin, Florence, who disappeared as a child more than fifty years earlier. When the mysterious woman vanishes from Lucy's house, she and Ellis don't know what to think. And considering that Calpernia Hemphill, the town's theater and music aficionado, has just been found dead of an apparent fall from the tower at Bertram's Folly, life in Stone's Throw suddenly seems less safe than sinister.Luckily, guardian angel Augusta Goodnight shows up to calm Lucy's nerves (with a basket of strawberry muffins, of course). And not a moment too soon, because Shirley/Florence is found dead at the bottom of a steep flight of steps in the parking lot behind the Methodist church. She is not the last victim, and Ellis, whose inheritance could be threatened by the reappearance of her long-lost cousin, remains the number-one suspect. Augusta, Lucy, and the Thursday Morning Literary Society (which now meets on Monday afternoons) must use their heads---and a little bit of home cooking---to solve the mystery.

WARM SOUP ON A COLD NIGHT.......2005-03-07
I live in South Carolina so these stories seem like people in my community. You MUST buy all the books in the series. The angel doesn't run the story but adds the sparkle that makes you never want to leave. I mark my calender for each book and you will too. The recipes at the end of each book are a bonus and a must try. You will be doing yourself an injustice if you fail to read even one line. Buy them all and settle back for a ride into mental comfort.
special cozy .......2005-02-27
Stone's Throw, South Carolina is the kind of southern town where nobody bothers to lock the doors because everyone knows one another. One night Lucy Van Pilgrim opens her door to a complete stranger who claims that she used to live there and wants to see her mother. She is gone by morning but Lucy's Aunt thinks it was the cousin of her friend Ellis who disappeared when she was a child. Ellis inherited what would have gone to Florence; shortly thereafter Florence is found murdered in the church parking lot.
At almost the same time that Florence is murdered wealthy matron Calpernia Hemphill is found dead; the police think she fell from her room when the masonry crumpled. She was going to build a theatre workshop on her land. Rumors spread that the director Calponia hired is a suspect in her death and Ellis is a suspect in her cousin's death. Guardian angel Augusta Goodnight comes to stay with Lucy because she senses there is something evil going on in Stone's Throw and she wants to protect her charge. As Lucy tries to clear Ellis of suspicion, she finds herself being stalked by a killer who will not hesitate to kill again if Lucy gets close to the truth.
An Augusta Goodnight mystery is always a treat and TOO LATE FOR ANGELS is a very special cozy as readers get a taste for small town living. Augusta immediately endears herself to Lucy who welcomes her into her house. Augusta turns Lucy's house into a warm home with her caring and helps in subtle ways in the investigation. Readers will be totally charmed by this beguiling mystery.

Book Description
7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence reveals the structuring beneath Emotional Intelligence (EI), utilising its unique framework to combine EI and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) the study of excellence that examines how behaviour is neurologically formulated. 7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence confidently integrates the insights of EI and NLP to promote a greater understanding of how emotions work and how they can be worked upon. This book is driven by one important message, 'Don't just think about it, do it!' A model-based guide packed with powerful NLP exercises and self-assessment techniques, it allows you to generate your own tricks, and to partake in an intensive EQ excellence course that utilises the self-programming practices of NLP. A thoroughly structured, functionally formatted guide to improving your EQ, 7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence serves as a textbook of EI theory, a manual of NLP techniques, and a workbook that systematically leads you through the process of dynamic EQ improvement. It answers the essential EI questions: what do my emotions mean?; how do I manage my emotions?; how can I deal with conflicts in an emotionally intelligent way?; what motivates people and how can I take that into account?; how can I handle situations in the best possible way?; how do I get what I want?
Customer Reviews:
But where is the Emotional Intelligence?.......2005-08-25
Firstly, let's be very clear that this is NOT a book about Emotional Intelligence. It is a book about the authors' ideas on about NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and how to apply NLP techniques. Whether it is about applying NLP to the subject of Emotional Intelligence depends on what definition of "emotional intelligence" is being used.
I have been told by one of the authors that "the book contains at least 25% typical emotional intelligence material"
Is it really adequate to have "at least 25% typical emotional intelligence material" in a book called "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"?
And what, in this context, is meant by "typical"?
In my opinion it certainly is NOT, for example, "typical" EI in the sense that Daniel Goleman or Salovey and Mayer use the term. Indeed, I'd be surprised if there was as much as 6 pages of material in the entire book that corresponds to any generally accepted definition of "emotional intelligence".
As far as I could see, it looked as though the definition of EI used here was made up for the occasion, partly on the basis of a book by Leslie Cameron-Bandler and Michael Lebeau called "The Emotional Hostage". Indeed, "7 Steps" takes Goleman to task for not having read "The Emotional Hostage" and claims that if he had read it then he "might have been [sic] reached very different conclusions" (on page 355). Yet strangely enough, though "The Emotional Hostage" is praised effusively, "7 Steps" also fails to reflect the key ideas in that book.
To be fair, these points might have been pardonable, to some extent, if the book actually added very much to our understanding of NLP, or at least showed us how to use NLP effectively in relation to our emotions. But in my opinion it does nothing of the kind. Of course that isn't so surprising since NLP itself has has always been much more interested in dealing with thoughts rather than with emotions. It is a significant gap in NLP's coverage of human psychology, and it's a great pity this book doesn't do anything at all, as far as I could see, to rectify the situation.
So, if you want a book on Emotional Intelligence, you'll be better off sticking with Goleman and other "mainstream" EI writers.
If you want an introduction to NLP then "Introducing NLP" by O'Connor and Seymour, or "NLP Workbook" by O'Connor are both far better options than this.
It works!.......2003-09-22
I am a consultant, coach, and trainer since 1983. I work across Canada, the U.S., and France on a variety of services including Culture by Design - helping companies determine their culture and adapting it to the internal and external environment - Performance Management Process, Process Improvement, and Executive Excellence (coaching). I constantly use the concepts and techniques proposed in this book. I know they work - from needs analysis, to proposal writing, closing, and delivery.
I found this book to be the clearest and most practical one on EQ. Some books are determined to tell you WHY and WHAT, but many authors aim to self-promote themselves so that you have to buy the HOW through their services. Not so with this book. This is no rehash or repackaging of NLP and EQ. The exercises proposed and the examples given are practical. Lots of meat with no fat. Just go ahead and use it. You prefer more? Try their web site addresses and see how you can enhance your professional practice. I did. I found the most friendly and fastest service than I have ever seen. You want to confirm your answers to those exercises? Write them, they will send them to you. Fast, efficient, friendly. Reflects the tone of the book. Get this book, study it, and apply it. It works!
Practical skills at last..........2002-05-30
As a consultant and trainer in Organisational in Emotional Intelligence and an NLP Practitioner I applaud the work of Patrick Merlevede, Bridoux and Vandamme. 7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence has offered me an unparalleled resource in my consulting, training and tools for EQ and Exec. Coaching.
I have read a number of books of late on the burgeoning topic of Emotional Intelligence, which include: The emotionally intelligent workplace (Cherniss and Goleman), Emotional Intelligence at Work (Goleman), Executive EQ (Cooper and Sawaf). In my opinion, these books successfully answer the 2 basic questions- Why EQ and What is EQ? What has not been successfully addressed till now is How-EQ?
After presenting compelling evidence to change, anecdotes that inspire, highly developed and statistically reliable measurements, one is then `left hanging' with no concrete methods of effecting this change. Goleman (Emotional Intelligence at Work) offers no `answers' his later text with Cary Cherniss discusses the `what of EI training' but not how this can be achieved. Developers of the EQ Map, Dr Cooper and Esther Orioli (Q Metrics) have engineered a 21day program to build EQ, one competency at a time (frustratingly slow process that uses the conscious mind and determination to bring about change). I do not doubt the merits of such a program but I find it interesting that we insist on the latest in software and computer technology but are still using outdated systems to utilising the brilliance of the human machine in creating change.
Most recent thinking acknowledges that all human behaviour, learning and change occur at the unconscious level. That is, at the level of the programs we are running, the coding behind the behaviour. To be lasting and effective, change must occur at this level. My own experience of many years counselling and coaching has verified this dictum.
I believe that NLP `the study of excellence' has always had the `answers'. The difficulty has arisen in the somewhat theoretical, academic (and to many) abstract `packaging' of its tools and methodology, which has made it inaccessible to the `many'.
Merlevede has achieved what I have not found in any other single text on EQ or NLP. He presents NLP through the filters of real life experience and personal wisdom to bring the power of these processes to a much wider audience. The authors have provided an easy to follow, concrete and complete program on: Why EQ, What (is) EQ, How EQ and What if EQ (in what other environments can I utilise these skills). At last- the total package-that works!
The book is filled with the powerful tools of NLP laced with practical examples and metaphors that inspire. It acts as reference text for consultants, trainers, coaches, NLP practitioners, leaders, executives and individuals who simply want to be their best and begin to utilise more of their vast and untapped potential.
Sorry to disagree with the other reviewers, but..........2002-03-25
I bought this book instead of the Goleman book because all the reviewers indicated that the Goleman book was lacking in practical advice as to how to apply the theory to achieve results in your life.
Unfortunately, I found 7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence even less useful due to the extremely technical, academic presentation style and the focus on Neuro Linguistic Programming. I didn't realize I was buying an NLP book...I thought this would be primarily a book about emotional intelligence.
Being an engineer, academic or technical presentation styles are usually not a problem for me, but I just found that I didn't want to spend 90% of my time comprehending NLP and only 10% learning about emotional intelligence.
If you are already very familiar with NLP, this book may be what you are looking for. If not, you may be disappointed, as I was.
Practical and well-founded at the same time!.......2002-02-09
This book is the first I came accross on the topic that really helped me develop my personal emotional intelligence. If you really want to get the most out of this book, don't underestimate it. Some even say that you could organize a 20-day course just to teach the contents of this book!
If you only look from a scientific perspective, some may call it "gibberish" or "new age", because it's not full of citations of theory (even if there are 90+ footnotes), but for me that just means these "scientists" don't understand what emotional intelligence is all about (let alone that they are willing to spend the time to learn it and put it into practice). Probably the same kind of people that are still unhappy that the IQ is less important they have always claimed. This reminds me of some companies that say their people and their emotional intelligence is important on day 1 and then fire 10.000 people by e-mail on day 2 (seems Goleman is the kind of consultant that company asks to come over on day 3).
I truely enjoyed it and liked the writing style. But only buy it if you are serious about doing someting to improve your emotional intelligence or if you want to try it out and find out what will work for you.

So So Guide To Les Paul.......2003-01-16
Depending upon your degree of knowledge about vintage guitars and Les Pauls in particular you may find this book a helpful and informative resource or a complete waste of time.
Tony Bacon has written a lot of books on vintage guitars and guitar collecting. I like his stuff, but he very often gets things just plain wrong. I am certain it has more to do with mistakes in the editing process than anything, but there are some nit-picky errors in this book.
The best treatment of Les Pauls and vintage Gibson electrics that I have seen is A.R. Duchossior's excellent and exhaustively researched book "Gibson Electrics - The Classic Years" (published by Hal Leonard).
This little book is a good introduction to the history of this important model and it has some nice photographs of various iterations of the Les Paul model from 1952 to the date of publication in the late 1990s, but if you're looking for a completely comprehensive guide/history to the Les Paul guitar that is 100% accurate this is not it. Still, if you're a guitar nut (like me) it's a nice little book to have.
Decent book for guitar "anoraks"........2002-07-08
The book is rather small and thin -- despite that it contains quite a lot of information but unfortunately much of it is in a dry tabular form. That said, what text there is inside is quite enjoyable. The story of the magical 1959 Les Paul is insightful. They varied tremedously as they were hand made by old ladies for the most part -- so the whole concept of a 1959 specification and 1959 is really somewhat flawed. I also like the pictures: 2 of Jimmy Page's Les Pauls and Gary Moore's "Peter Green Les Paul" (yes that Les Paul, the one with the reversed magnetic in the neck pick-up). Some of these guitars have passed into guitar folklore -- they have become well known characters over the last 43 years or so of their existance. Pity they didn't have an image of Eric Clapton's Les Paul -- the one used on the seminal Beano album -- as it was stolen back in the 60's. [There was a rumor recently -- in Guitar Techniques magazine -- that another London professional, Bernie Marsden, is currently playing that guitar but who knows.]. The book should be brought up to date and some holes filled in - hence only 3-stars (actually more like 3.5) but if you like Les Pauls, I mean really like Les Pauls - then you will probably want to take a look at this.

A great "could-have-been".......2002-06-13
This book is quite good, but I really think that the idea has a lot more to offer. The book is great for a quick reading of Gibson's history and the evolution of the Les Paul model in particular, but I think it could have been more clearly-structured. Not everything is negative though, there are great pictures, and I like the emphasis on descriptive details about the guitars. I wish this book had 30 or 40 more pages worth of text and pictures, that would have been great!
The Title Should be LESS PAUL.......2000-06-23
Bacon gets points for overall organization but looses a great deal for leaving out key details and making too many mistakes. For instance, the early years were covered well, but the end of and the post Norlin period was full of glaring ommissions and mistakes. As an avid Les Paul collector and frequent contributor to vintage guitar magazine I was sorely disappointed. There was no mention of the 1988 Showcase series where Gibson installed EMG pickups in its guitars. No mention of the experiment with Steinberger and the bizarre mutant Les Pauls that surfaced in 86-87 timeframe. The Norlin 81 Silverburst was not covered nor was there any mention of the Kahler tremelo collaboration, the Ferrari Red and other color experiments. The reference tables are packed with errors and more omissions. This book wont help a collector identify or understand Les Pauls. If you are going to write a book about the Gibson Les Paul then make sure it is accurate if not complete. This book has great photos and a very good summary of key early year facts....but enough already about the 59-61 bursts already. There is no much more to the Les Paul history.

If this sparkling book contained only its crystalline reproductions of illuminated manuscripts, it would satisfy most lovers of these charming miniatures. But Roger S. Wieck, curator of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City, is the most entertaining of authors. His enthusiasm for what he dubs "the Medieval best-seller" is thoroughly infectious. "Books of Hours linked church and home," he writes. "The entire celestial court, God and his cosmos, could be held within the palms of one's hands." Wieck has turned his scholarly, historical material into a page-turner. Given the hypnotic beauty of the manuscripts themselves, with all their flayings, blessings, betrayals, and epiphanies, Painted Prayers should be a bestseller in its own right.
Book Description
This book features 107 of the finest examples of illuminated pages from medieval and Renaissance Books of Hours. Roger Wieck's comprehensive text introduces the Book of Hours--a "bestseller" for three hundred years--to the general reader, discussing its iconography, the artists who illuminated this genre, and its role as a religious text in the lives of its owners. As a collection of both stirring words and inspiring images, the Book of Hours thus comprised a series of "painted prayers."

Painted Prayers: The Book of Hours in Medieval and Renaissance Art (Book of Hours of Pannonhalma 1-11) .......2005-08-31
good illustrations, intertaining book
A Nicely Illustrated Volume of Books of Hours.......2004-01-25
The Pierpont Morgan Library's collection of manuscripts and printed works contains some truly beautiful works of art. I was privileged to see some of them at an exhibit in the Kimbell Art Museum. This book was offered as a catalog of the exhibit and I immediately bought it as a reminder of what I had seen. The illustrations in this book, though not quite as visually stunning, are nevertheless representative of the originals. Bibliographic information is rather sparse but the further reading section is nice.
Painted Prayers gives both the structure of the book itself and the reason behind its popularity during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It was the laity in general, and more specifically the female laity, that owned these works as a kind of, "direct, democratic, and potentially uninterrupted access to God, the Virgin Mary, and the saints." (p.14). It is fascinating to see the incorporation of Christian, and sometimes pagan, symbols and iconography, and even humor, in the miniatures and marginalia of the Books of Hours. The miniatures often depicted biblical, or historical, scenes in modern settings and dress. Patrons would often have their portraits, coats of arms, monograms, or intials incoprorated into the Books of Hours that they had commissioned. With the advent of printing in the 15th century Books of Hours, with their pictures, became even more successful as they could now reach out to a wider audience.
If you ever have the opportunity to see an exhibit featuring Books of Hours I recommend you see it. Failing that, Painted Prayers is a good stand in.
Marvelous illustrations carefully explained.......2000-09-13
While this book contains chapters of material e.g. introduction, calendar, Gospel Lessons, Hours of the Virgin, Pentitential Psalms etc., the core of the book is the descriptions of the illustrations themselves. These description provide a variety of information - bits of biography of the artist, history of the manuscript (confirmed and confirmed), information regarding the style, the imagery etc. The "chapter" material provides samples of the texts, the development of the specific portion of the Book of Hours, etc. This provides the overall context for the materials.
The indices provide access by manuscript, artist, early owners; an appendex provides the outline of the major offices by incipit (first phrase) to place individual illustrations in the overall context of the prayer hour.
Don't be intimidated - the text is easily followed but one unfamilar with the prayer book content or with illuminated manuscripts. But you can also enjoy the book simply going through the pictures - like a stroll through a museum without a docent or tape.
Beautifully Illustrated Gem.......2000-08-21
This well-organized survey of the Book of Hours in Medieval and Renaissance art takes the reader through the various parts of the book of hours illustrating both the historical and artistic development from the earliest manuscript examples to incunabula. Lavishly illustrated with examples taken only from the Pierpont Morgan Library, where Wieck is a curator, the book is also a mini catalog of that collection. While the "reader" could fully enjoy this book by simply looking at the pictures, Wieck's text is full of illuminating tidbits. The book also contains some detailed descriptions of medieval liturgy and religious practices that may be of interest to some readers.

Who's Who in the Bible.......2007-03-16
Book was never received and their response to my quiries indicated that I would receive a refund. To date refund has not been received. This book was ordered on February 13th, 2007.
Excellent Resource!.......2004-10-16
I'm a divinity student at an Ivy League school. "Who's Who in the Bible" is AWESOME. The bios and content are presented in a flowing, story format. There are lots of pictures and visuals to picture the people and see how they have been portrayed in the art. There's also a comprehensive listing of all of the people in the Bible, which is really helpful.
This book is great for div students, but an excellent resource for churches, families, and others!
An Excellent Reference with Great Pictures.......2003-12-29
From Aaron to Zophar, "Who's Who in the Bible" is an excellent bible resource. It's encyclopedic entries are clear and to the point, without feeling dumbed down. The many illustrations - some of which are spectacular full-page, life-like paintings - really help to bring to characters to life and elevate this from being just dry text - even kids will enjoy this. All entries appear in bold throughout so you can easily cross-reference. In the back there is an alphabetical listing of everyone in the Old and New Testament as well as the Apocrypha; plus an index.
In all, an excellent job by Readers Digest. Highly recommended!
Supplement with The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs........2000-01-18
Who's Who in the Bible is a great reference resource with lots of color illustrations and photos. The commentary shows how to pronounce the people's names and tells what their names meant. Related names are in bold for cross-referencing. Although written in 1994 it quotes the older Revised Standard Version (1952) instead of the New Revised Standard Version(1990). If you enjoy this book you may also like THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. Numerous biblical characters are pointed out who illustrate King Solomon's witty observations on human nature.

"Ring Twice For Mistress.".......2005-08-14
Edward Jablonski's FLYING FORTRESS is a classic of aviation literature and is unique as the earliest, best-written "biography" of any aircraft. Sometimes imitated but never duplicated, FLYING FORTRESS is a wonderful read, less military history than memoir, and anyone who does read it comes away with love in their heart for the Boeing B-17, one of the most lethal, effective, rugged, and beautiful (if such a word applies to warplanes) flying machines ever built.
Jablonski takes us through the step-by-step evolution of this airplane, from its earliest wooden strut-and-wire precursors to its ultimate development into the B-29 "atomic" bomber of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The general design of the B-17 proceeded from Boeing's Model 299 to the wartime B-17G, of which almost 9000 were built. Although the "E," "F," and "G" variants were the most common of the more than 12,000 B-17s constructed, the Flying Fortress underwent literally hundreds of modifications and served variously as a heavy bomber, a command plane, a radar platform, an antisubmarine hunter, and even a kind of long-range superfighter during its decade-long career.
The B-17 was as widely distributed as it was modified. Although the Flying Fortress is most commonly associated with the Eighth Air Force based in England, Fortresses served in Italy, Africa and the Pacific theatre as well. The B-17 (along with the B-24) was the backbone of America's Strategic Bombardment program against Germany during World War II. Although the price was steep (about 25% of Fortresses never came home) Strategic Bombardment demonstrably shortened the war by destroying Germany's industrial plant. (Strategic Bombardment really came into its own only with the development of stealth technology and smart bombs, which allowed for pinpoint accuracy in targeting.)
Even more than the plane, Jablonski regales us with tales---some comic, some tragic---of the men who flew these planes and the dangers they faced. Jablonski rejoices in recounting the war stories of these now gray-haired old men (where they've survived), especially the exploits of the "Bloody 100th" Bomb Group (famous to this day as suffering from a Luftwaffe vendetta), and "Rosie's Riveters." Jablonski doesn't much credit the vendetta against the "Century Bombers" except as a pilots' legend, but he does do a wonderful job of bringing to life the exploits of the B-17 crews.
FLYING FORTRESS is rounded out with an extensive technical section (including the pilot's manual) and hundreds of photographs. (Nowadays the Web holds the actual pilot training films, a must see for anyone interested in the B-17.) The only shortcomings of FLYING FORTRESS are the lack of a table of organization for the Army Air Forces, the absence of a brief summary of the postwar history of a few of the more famous planes, and nothing regarding expanded information on insignia and nose art (which is an engrossing subject all on its own).
The Flying Fortress still fascinates, and is still beloved. Much of the continuing public fascination with the B-17 can be attributed largely to this book, which kept the B-17 alive before the Internet made esoteric information generally available.
A definite and definitive five star effort!
Same Here.......2003-07-02
I just wanted to mimick the above review. I bought this book over twenty years ago (I'm now 29), and it is dogeared and tired, but still the measure by which I gauge all aircraft books.
Best B-17 book of all time.......2003-02-28
Anyone interested in a complete book on the B-17 Flying Fortress must have this one. It is a classic. I have been refering to this book for some 25 years. I used to check this book out at the library every chance I could as a kid. Now I own my own copy. It has copies of manuals from the planes. Complete documentation of the evolution of this magnificent bomber. Most men that flew this plane, loved it. Though this book was written many years ago, I don't think our history revisionists can add much of anything to it.

A unique and informative contribution to Lighthouse history.......2001-01-17
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Women Who Kept The Lights: An Illustrated History Of Female Lighthouse Keepers continues to be a unique and informative contribution to Lighthouse histories and studies. In an occupation dominated by males, Mary Louise and Candace Clifford reveal the names of 141 women who received official keeper appointments in the lighthouse service. More than twice that number received appointments as assistant keepers. Most of this number were wives, widows or daughters of former keepers, beginning with Hannah Thomas at Plymouth Light on the Massachusetts coasts in 1776 (her husband went off to fight the British), and ending with Fannie Salter, who tended the Turkey Point Light on Chesapeake Bay from her husband's death in 1925 until she retired in 1947. It was only with the introduction of automated lights by the U.S. Coast Guard in the 20th Century that the lighthouse keepers became obsolete and passed into history. "Must" reading for lighthouse history enthusiasts and women's studies groups, Women Who Kept The Lights wonderfully details the careers of 30 of these vigorous women.
Women Who Kept the Lights.......2000-04-07
Until I found this book listed by Amazon.com, I never realized women *were* lighthouse keepers. Clifford and Clifford's book will banish forever the image of the lighthouse keeper as crusty old batchelor, and will bring a renewed sense of awareness of the many accomplishments of which women are capable. The careful research done by the authors brings out a rarely publicized image of the women who tended the big lights, carefully pollishing the reflectors and the glass, keeping the lighthouses clean and functional, welcoming and educating visitors and doing their part - often heroically, to keep the vital paths of sea and lake open and safer by running these lights (often operating more than one beacon), running foghorns(either through mechanical devices or by hand), even saving lives. Through each vignette, a larger and more complete image emerges of the lives of the women who tended lighthouses, often while caring for invalid fathers and husbands, as well as bearing and raising children in these often-isolated locations. I must admit, I wish there had been more material on the west coast of America, and hope there might be a sequal. The photographs and sidebars added substance to this excellent publication. This will be a worthwhile addition to any library, especially if the reader enjoys American history and the role of women in American culture.

very charming book.......2001-08-23
Excellent and funny book with a lot of illustrations. I purchased it about 10 years ago in USA with Jim Kepner's "Becoming a people..." and Terry Boughner's "Out of All Time". They are very nice and intersting volumes. In these books, however, we can find only the occidental people with few exceptions ; e.g. Mishima Yukio, Suleiman . Though English has become nowadays as if a kind of LINGUA FRANCA , I don't understand why the English speaking people still have such a narrow-minded thinking. I'd like to read more international, global and comprehensive books.
PS : Noel I. Garde's "Jonathan to Gide : The Homosexual in History" also is a very intersting book of "The Gay-people's List" , although it is on the westerners including some Oriental men like Abu Nuwas and Saladin.

Product Description
From the time Westinghouse started commercial broadcasting in 1920 through the end of the radio soap operas in the early 1960s, hundreds of men and women performed on radio. Day after day, week after week, these performers (e.g., Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, Kate Smith, Lowell Thomas, Kay Kyser, and Bob Hope) became familiar voices and welcomed guests in the homes of millions of Americans. Actors, comedians, singers, commentators, announcers, emcees, newscasters, preachers and various other artists all gave voice to radio and 953 of them are covered in this unique reference work. Performers Fran Allison, Les Paul, Johnny Desmond, Alec Templeton, Don Wilson, Jerry Colonna and soap opera favorites Virginia Payne, Betty Garde, Macdonald Carey, David Gothard, Page Gilman, and Jan Miner are included herein, as well as Ezra Stone, Groucho Marx, Will Rogers, and Frank Sinatra and hundreds more. For each, there is a listing of their radio programs, birth and death dates (where appropriate) and a biography that focuses on their work in radio. Heavily illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
It's Great, But..........1999-12-17
This is a book many old-time radio enthusiasts have been looking for: a book that covers the stars of old-time radio, gives their biographies and their radio credits! From what I've seen, this is the most detailed and accurate book there is. Having said that, I must point out that there are a few problems with the book. I wish the information was better documented for one thing. For another, sometimes the years of birth the author gives for the stars makes me wonder, "Where did he find that?" For example, almost all books on Abbott and Costello state that Bud was born in 1895 and Lou in 1906. However, this book puts their years of birth in 1900 and 1908 respectively. There are many other dates in the book that cause me to wonder, "Where did he come up with that?" With that nit-picking out of the way, I must close by saying that overall it's a great reference guide to old-time radio. There should be more books that are this well written.

Tumult in the clouds - We're going around again........2007-02-03
This fascinating book has it all. The crews, the missions, 400 illustrations, training manual, specs, amazing individual stories, all packed into 362 pages. The B-17 in America, the South Pacific, North Africa, and Europe, it is all here. In 1990, after seeing the film Memphis Belle in the theatre several times, I purchased a Cooper A2 flight jacket and began attending air shows featuring B-17 rides where you can roam the 75 ft fuselage, listening to the awesome fury of four 1,200 hp Wright Cyclone R-1820-97 radial piston engines rumbling the 104 ft wingspan. During takeoff watch the ground fall away thru the tail wheel opening. When the removable window over the radio compartment is open, stand on your toes and stick your head out at 160 mph. Sometimes a Corsair or B-24 will be at wingtip for a Kodak moment. Check out the 10 locations of the tail gunner (whose average lifetime in actual combat was something like 17 seconds), 2 waist gunners, plexiglass ball turret, radio operator, flight engineer/top turret, bombardier (and the Norden bombsight), navigator and pilots; also the thirteen .50 cals. The manual section of the book explains the instrument panels, how to takeoff, how to feather, how to ditch, bailout, etc. There were only 12,731 of these 40,000 pound Boeings built, capable of 300 mph at 35,800 ft. altitude. With names like Hell's Kitchen, Hellzapoppin, Borrowed Time, Hang the Expense, The Eager Beavers, The Duchess, Damdifino II, Boomerang, Banshee, Bataan, All American, Alexander the Swoose, Just a Snappin, Laden Maiden, Miss Bea Haven, Red Gremlin, Rosie's Riveters, Ruthie II, Yankee Doodle, Skipper, Snoozin' Suzan, Sqawkin Hawk II, and Suzy-Q, the author covers all of the major engagements of WWII from the B-17's perspective, but the highlights are the individual stories of people like Major Robert Rosenthal's classic adventures, especially his 52nd bombing run. Born on September 6, 1944, actress Swoosie Kurtz is named after a plane her father Frank Kurtz flew and had accepted by the Smithsonian. The Swoose is the oldest surviving B-17. Named after a popular song The Swoose began her career on April 28 1941. She made the first non-stop flight by a land-based military aircraft from continental US to Hawaii, ran bombing missions against the Japanese forces and shot down several fighters. She made her last flight from Texas on Dec 3 1953 - to Andrews AFB, MD. Three engines failed by the time she touched down at Andrews. In April 1961 she was brought to the National Air and Space Museum Restoration Facility at Silverhall, MD where she is on display. The last flight I took was the Nine O' Nine in May 2001, so it is time to figure out the 2007 airshow schedule from the following list of airworthy B-17s: Aluminum Overcast, Boeing Bee, Chuckie, Flying Fortress, Fuddy Duddy, Memphis Belle*, Miss Angela, Nine O' Nine, Pink Lady, Sally B, Sentimental Journey, Texas Raiders, Thunderbird, Yankee Lady II. *some are named in honor of the original. The original Memphis Belle 41-24485, is at Memphis Belle Memorial Association Memphis, Tenn. Besides the 2 Memphis Belle dvds, others are: The War Lover (Steve McQueen), 12 O'clock High (Gregory Peck), B-17 Flying Legend (Mark Feijo, 2004).
