Customer Reviews:
Bantock scores another win with this trio!.......2007-06-10
Anyone who was captivated by the first three books in Bantock's imaginative Griffin & Sabine series--whether for the quality of the storytelling, the imagery, or even just for their creative design--owes it to themselves to check out these three followup volumes, which are every bit their equal on all counts. Even readers who are entirely unfamiliar with the Griffin & Sabine saga will, I think, find this trio a real treat and well worth the purchase price.
Griffin and Sabine live on!.......2007-01-10
This continuation of the Grifin and Sabine trilogy is fantastic. I read all three books in one sitting.
Well played Nick, you took our money and didn't deliver........2006-11-22
City girl and I recently read the six books. It was a delightful, warm, fun time, drinking wine and reading a book a night by the fire. I read aloud the male parts and she the female. We would laugh and wonder and hypothesize and puzzle over the meanings. They were wonderful memorable evenings.
My opinion of The Books:
He should have stopped at the first one!!
Like a movie company that sees dollar signs after a successful first run, Nick wrote a sequel that was a shadow of the original. The subsequent books prove to be good evidence that he had very little in mind as far as a story line goes and with the judicious application of vague, confusing and nonsensical teasings, he told us nothing. Just as "Jaws XXI" and "Halloween XVI" still brought the teenagers to the box office, so will "Sabine Becomes Cleopatra" and "Griffin Returns to Pleades" bring bring the Bantok herds stampeding into Barnes and Nobels. The cash registers will ring, Nick will smile, and the faithful will say, "May I please have some more?"
I didn't like his artwork either.
storyline doesn't quite live up to the artwork.......2006-11-18
About ten years passed for me between the time I first discovered the Griffin & Sabine trilogy and this Morning Star box set. It's hard to judge this work without comparing it to the merits of the first trilogy. The lovers in Morning Star are far less interesting and their passion seems to be more about physical tension rather than the loneliness and searching that brought Griffin and Sabine together from their vastly different worlds. The villan from the 3rd G&S story is back, but why he's interested in this new couple and how they relate to G&S is only vaguely hinted at.
You still get the guilty pleasure of reading someone else's mail, but because the two lovers already know each other, there isn't a sense of the story tensely unwinding as they are trying to figure out who they are in relation to each other. This trilogy seems to sacrifice the romantic tension and suspense of the first trilogy for a more philosophical statement about the connections between people. Nick Bantock's artwork is still amazing, but the story and characters in this series aren't as compelling as the images in the book.
Resistant to change.......2006-06-01
I was a huge fan of the first 3 books. I even got a tattoo based on one of the drawings but these last 3 somehow didn't have the same magic. I fell in love with Griffin and Sabine and their relationship but could never embrace the 2 new characters we meet in the later 3 books. The artwork is just as wonderful as the original 3 but to me some of the magic of the love story was lost in the last 3. They are still fun to read and worth owning, especially if you enjoyed the original 3.

Book Description
Fletch’s Fortune
He hadn’t been a practicing journalist for years, although people remembered him and he still has a few contacts. And he’s pretty sure he hasn’t paid his dues to the American Journalism Alliance anytime recently. But somebody has.
Fletch’s Fortune
Enjoying himself on the French Riviera, developing a killer tan, and sleeping with the neighbor’s wife, Fletch is feeling pretty flush. But when agents Eggers and Fabens show up with a little more information about Fletch than is comfortable and an invitation to the A.J.A. convention, how could he refuse?
Fletch’s Fortune
So he finds himself enlisted as a spy among his peers. But before he can even set up his surveillance, there’s a murder. And almost everybody’s a suspect. Because a lot of people were employed by Walter March, and most of them had a reason to hate him.
Customer Reviews:
the funniest Fletch.......2007-08-24
Fletch is irreverent, clever, a tarnished white knight. In this mystery, he's in trouble with a lot of people, but you know that he'll turn the tables on all of them in the end. With the help of another reporter, a character that's as funny as he is, Fletch saves the day once more. A book that will make your family wonder why you are laughing out loud all by yourself. Highly recommended.
Fletch's Fortune is a Winner.......2003-08-29
Another great book in the Fletch series. Fletch's failure to pay income taxes forces him to spy on his fellow jounralists. Of course, there is a dead body and Fletch has an investigation to pursue. Great dialogue, a true treat for Fletch fans.
fond of Fletch.......2002-06-12
If you liked the Fletch movies you will undoubtedly enjoy this read. I recently discovered this book and was so excited to find an entire series of "Fletch" books written in the seventies.
The book reads just like the movies with the same clever dialogue. Pure fluffy fun.

Customer Reviews:
I really loved this book........2006-02-23
Lee Martindale plays with all sorts of literary and genre conventions and manages to make every one of them work for her in a totally unexpected way. She's a terrific writer, has a wonderful imagination, and a political perspective I agree with completely. I wish her work were better known, included in all sorts of anthologies that were required reading in schools of all levels. Her work can really create changes in people's hearts and minds about fat prejudice.
Inspiring and Intelligent.......2001-07-25
Lee Martindale's "The Folly of Assumption" is an intelligent and witty collection os short stories that inspire and enthrall the reader. Lee takes the common stereotypes of beauty and ability and turns them on their ears. The emergence of of heroes of size and substance as exciting, vibrant, beautiful people is something long overdue. This collection is sorely needed, appreciated, and worth reading over and over again.
What a wonderful little book!.......2001-07-05
I have known Lee for about a year now. I picked up her latest book at a Convention here in Houston. I know that Lee is a Large Size Activisit. Meaning that she is a fighter for Fat Rights. The stories in this book go along with that theme. A few days after the convention I picked up the book. I am a fairly slow reader...but I sucked these stories up like they were ice water on a hot Texas summerday. All of the stories were just little treats to be savored. I will definatly read this book again. My only complaint is that the book was not longer. I hope that there will be a second vomume soon. I encourage everyone to pick this one up.

Bobbi helps readers recognize their own remarkable beauty traits and develop their own natural beauty styles. She also analyzes the styles of some of the most celebrated beauties of the past--Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Onassis, Grace Kelly--and of our time--Christy Turlington, Demi Moore, and Kate Moss.

not the best i've read...........2007-07-28
I consider makeup to be an important part of my everyday appearance. And this book really didn't deliver on anything more than everyday, easy to learn tricks that i gathered when i was 14 from Glamour. Not my fave makeup book, but there are a few good spots
Not as good at is sounds.......2007-01-30
I was very disappointed with the book. I have been wearing makeup since I was 15. I take it as my hobby and what I needed was a book that could show me different techniques, different ways of applying makeup other than the usual ways I was taught over the years, different color combinations. This book is REALLY BASIC. It really does not give you a step by step in how to achieve a certain look. So if this is what you are looking for go for another book.
Rather disappointing.......2006-08-04
I bought this book based on the recommendation of my sister-in-law, who has worked at several department-store makeup counters. She said that Brown's book had a lot of really great information, especially for a novice makeup wearer like me. However, I found the book to be lacking in specific techniques for applying makeup.
Some sections were fairly thorough, but most (especially the section on doing eye makeup) remained at a really general level. The only main piece of advice I got from the book is to wear yellow-based foundation, concealer, and powder. A lot of the other information Brown gives is just too general; using some diagrams and showing color variations would have made it much more practical.
Last year, I purchased Sonia Kashuk's _Real Beauty_, and I definitely recommend that book over this one. Kashuk's book shows detailed photos of her makeup techniques so you can really see how a professional makeup artist applies makeup.
I wanted to like Brown's book, but found it not as helpful as I hoped it would have been!
Bobbi Brown fan.......2006-06-19
I love it when Bobbi Brown is on Good Morning America. Although it's usually a quick pass because the show segment is so rushed, Brown gives fantastic quick tips for ladies of all ages. Then if viewers want more information, her book Bobbi Brown Beauty illustrates the same tips in a detailed way.
Her advice has been some of the best out there, if not THE best.
RATHER OLD.......2006-03-08
SHOWS JUST A CERTAIN TYPE AND STYLE OF MAKE UP.
GOOD ADVICES.

Book Description
A fascinating and scholarly look at the machines that revolutionized office communication from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nearly 700 color photographs display mechanical typewriters produced by Adler*TM, American*TM, Corona*TM, Grundka*TM, Hall*TM, Monarch*TM, Remington*TM, Royal*TM, Smith Corona*TM, and many others. An overview of the historical development of the typewriter includes patents and brief histories of the manufacturers. Additionally, a detailed bibliography, index, and current market values in the captions are also provided. Set designers, historians, and typewriter collectors will learn how technical developments changed the designs through the decades.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Resource.......2006-04-04
There is a relatively small community of typewriter collectors, of whom I am one. Within this community there are subdivisions: those who collect the very early machines, those who collect a particular brand, those who collect a particular type (e.g. portables, desk machines, electrics). Because the typewriter was such a common device in both homes and businesses for almost all of the twentieth century, and because they were produced in the millions, many have failed to appreciate the impact these machines made on our society. The typewriter is the story of American ingenuity come to life. While there were foreign contributions to its development, the overwhelming percentage of patents and improvements were American. The typewriter freed countless women from a living of domestic servitude and allowed them to support themselves in a newly-created occupation. It changed both the nature and tempo of American office work, where efficiency and productivity were measurable.
This book focuses on the earliest machines prior to World War I. As many know, the early typewriter took many forms: some had the familiar typebars, while others used a rotating type wheel where letters were pressed to paper one at a time, some allowed the paper to move past the type, and still others allowed the paper to remain stationary while the typewriter moved! There were typewriters available for a few Dollars for the occasional home use, while the most mechanical models were quite expensive.
For the 'outsider', this book is a detailed and beautifully illustrated (in color) survey, by brand, of the available machines and their types in these early years. Many of these machines can still be found and purchased rather inexpensively, while the rarer machines are steadily increasing in value. The machines covered here are not for those of us who like to actually type--most don't have the standard keyboard we use today. These are machines for display.
This book will remain a valuable resource on the subject long after it has gone out of print. I would like to see a followup on machines covering the period between the Wars, when the industry as a whole continued development. This field represents American ingenuity at its best, and is a lesson for all of us in this regard.

Seventy–two step–by–step projects for modern do–it–yourself home and office design, by world–renowned designer Todd Oldham.
Love the look of mid–century, modern, retro design, but don't feel like dropping two weeks' pay on an Eames chair? Todd Oldham shares his passion for mid–century modern homes with over 72 do–it–yourself projects for anyone who loves crafts and longs to add character to every corner of their home.
Each project is charted through step–by–step photos and instructions until the fabulously mod end. Other projects include home–computer face–lifts, Xerox wallpaper, aluminium lighting fixtures, and cosy shoe–storage systems. In additional to Todd's brilliantly engineered projects, the book comes complete with a tutorial on modern home design in the form of sidebars and short essays throughout –everything from that now–famous Eames chair to the case–study houses of the 1950s.
Handmade Modern promises to revolutionise the way the reader looks at his or her own home and capacity to beautify a space. Chic, accessible, and fun, this is the achievable new look of modern home design.

Review: Hand Made Modern.......2007-08-07
Designer Todd Oldham, founder of Todd Oldham Studio in New York and host of the Bravo television series "Top Design," provides more nifty project ideas and DIY help in his 2005 book titled Handmade Modern: Mid-Century Inspired Projects for Your Home. Oldham's book contains more than 72 step-by-step projects inspired by mid-century modern aesthetics. Interspersed along with an array of design plans; Oldham's book contains a number of succinct bios on such prominent designers as Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard and Charles and Ray Eames.
Oldham is well known for his contributions to the world of accessible design and has often struck me as a gifted mentor and educator. On first review,Oldham's book fulfills expectations with it's vivid "mod-podge" design and brilliantly conceived projects. Upon closer inspection however, Handmade Modern falls short of its expected accessibility with vague instructions and the absence of a much needed list of tools and materials for each project.
From a design prospective Todd Oldham's book is a bit of a let down. Ultimately, the book exists to inform the reader, so how the book does this should be considered most critically. Aesthetically, the book is pleasing and the form is consistent, but unfortunately it falls short in its function.

Disappointing..........2007-07-12
I'm a huge Todd Oldham fan but, over all, but this book is very disappointing. A lot of the projects seem complicated and/or expensive (also, I think the prices he lists for some of the supplies are too low, making some projects even more expensive than they seem). Given the cost of materials and tools, some things just don't seem worth making. I wish there were more simple, clever ideas for adding Modern design to your home, that don't require a lot of money, skill, tools, or a work space. The instructions and photos are sometimes confusing or incomplete, making them hard to follow. The one thing I like about this book is that Oldham talks about important Modern designers like Isamu Noguchi and Eva Zeisel, but I'm already familiar with their work, so this didn't teach me anything. I love Oldham's design aesthetic, but this is a very weak how-to book. Sorry, Todd!
Innovative Ideas for Hands-On Creative People.......2006-11-14
If you're a creative person who likes to get into hands on projects, this is a book for you. Each section begins with a photograph of an entire room, and the following pages used cropped images of each item with instructions on how to make them. Most of the projects do require some knowledge about construction & materials, however. Tools needed include a jigsaw, sewing machine, or a large space in which to do some of the projects. There are smaller projects though that do not require these things, and the book definitely promotes you to come up with your own creative ideas. One downside though, if you are interested in easy crafts - this isn't the book for you. Readers definitely need to understand the basics in order to find this book useful.
ok for ideas.......2006-11-05
This book was inspirational, and I love Todd Oldham but some of the projects are a little complicated for someone w/o any carpentry skills or lack of work space. I would recommend "Readymade" instead.
One of the worst edited book i've seen....Don't bother buying this book!.......2006-10-30
The goods: The projects are cool and fun to make but not for the ordinary person who does not know how to use a lot of power tools or knows how to sew. The designs of the projects are nice and are pretty up to date with the retro style.
The Bads: This has GOT to be the worst edited book i've ever seen!
In each introduction of the project, the finished item is shown. Then the step-by-step comes but the photos of each step are horribly cropped and doesn't show much. Then the last step is shown and it seems as if there is a page missing. It doesn't feel like there is a "finish" to each and every project. It doesn't show you what the item looks like when it's completed....even if it means repeating the finished photo of the project. I much rather have the "finished" item be shown at the end than at the beginning. I keep turning the pages thinking there is another step to the project....but NO! It feels as if the instructions just abruptly ends. What a waste of my time and money! Don't bother buying this book! It certainly is one of the worst edited book i've seen so far.
Book Description
Technology has sent shockwaves of change through the world of commercial art. Digital illustration and design, online portfolio sites, and the proliferation of stock art have radically changed the way that illustrators and graphic designers work. What has not changed, however, is the wealth of illustrators and graphic designers hoping to turn their talent into freelance success. More than ever, artists face questions such as how to get started, how to sell their work, how to promote themselves, and what to do once they are working. For those embarking on freelance careers in illustration or graphic design, the answers have arrived. A twenty-five year veteran in the field, Michael Fleishman, has detailed every business aspect of commercial art in Starting Your Career as a Freelance Illustrator or Graphic Designer.
Customer Reviews:
essential.......2007-08-14
so you want to go freelance... you really, REALLY want to go freelance? Tired of working for a boss? Want your own hours? Sleep late? Get this book, read it and then decide. It'll give you a well-rounded education of what they don't tell you in art school because what your professors were really interested in at that time wasn't your education, but getting a piece of co-ed you-know-what while they collected their paycheck.
Best Book On Freelancing I've Ever Read.......2007-06-27
This is simply one of the best books for starting a freelance art career that I've ever read. This book gives you very practical information about almost every detail of freelance illustration and graphic design. You'll find information on creating business and financial plans, setting up and managing a studio, billing procedures, creating a portfolio and marketing yourself to potential clients. I find a lot of books of this nature don't talk about the raw mechanics of business so much as they offer token inspiration and motivation. If you're interested in a book that will actually give you useful information about the business side of freelancing this is the one to buy.
The only areas where it seemed to be a little on the thin side were dealing with taxes and the legal issues concerned with working for youself. Other than that it was wonderful.
Great reference book!.......2007-05-28
I love this book! It's great for those just starting up and has covered each aspect of becoming a freelancer. Each time something has come up, I referenced this book and found the answers! Highly recommended!
A great little guide for the wanta-be entrepreneur who doesn't have a mentor to help them go from W-2 worker to self-employed!.......2007-04-29
I really liked this book a lot. It was a very good first-hand book written by a small business owner about his experiences starting, managing, and prospering as a freelance illustrator and/or graphic designer. His writing style was not exactly stellar. But it certainly was clear. The 20 chapters included in the book fell into the following 4 topics:
1. STARTING THE FIRM
>>Where Do You Start?
>>Off on the Right Foot
>>Creating a Plan for Your Business
>>Developing Your Financial Plans
>>Forms, Charts & Templates
>>Pricing Your Work and Getting Paid
2. MANAGING THE FIRM
>>Why Should You Freelance?
>>Setting Up Shop
>>Managing Your New Studio
3. RAINMAKING FOR THE FIRM
>>Bring in Clients
>>How to Get Noticed
>>What Goes in the Portfolio
>>Marketing on the Web
4. POSSIBLE MARKETS
>>The Magazine Market
>>Selling to the Newspapers
>>Working with Advertising Agencies
>>Selling to Book Publishers
>>The Greeting Card Market
>>Working with Art and Design Studios
>>Selling to Small Business
Since I am not an illustrator or a graphic designer I did not have much use for the fourth topic. But it was interesting to read about. I regularly counsel wanta-be entrepreneurs about how to start a small business; I'm a volunteer SCORE counselor. And the material covered in the first three topics above are exactly what I talk about with my SCORE clients. I highly recommend this book to anybody wanting to start their own small consulting practice. It does a wonderful job discussing the topics.
My biggest complaint with the book is the tendency of the author to recommend outsourcing so many functions: accounting, taxes, and Web site design and construction. I think these things should be fully understood by the small business owner and probably done by the owner herself. When the business grows to have a few employees, then the employees can do those tasks if the owner wants to do that.
I would have written the section on choice of business structure differently. Keep in mind that LLCs can be either single member or multi member. An LLC can elect to be taxed as a sole proprietorship (single member), a partnership (multi member), or a C Corporation. Also, a multi member LLC will have to file a partnership tax return. A good book on the subject that I recommend you read to supplement this book is Structuring Your Business (ISBN: 1593371772). I highly recommend forming an LLC and electing to have it taxed as a C Corporation. Just give yourself a bonus at year-end so the corporation retains no earnings. If your business is a corporation it is less likely to be audited by the IRS. 5 stars!
Good book.......2006-11-11
At first, I had heard that this author talks "down" to the illustrator when he is explaining things, but this book I actually found very helpful, true to life and there weren't any sugar coatings. I enjoyed how he wrote and he put things into perspective, he didn't talk down.

Book Description
In his last years, America's leading playwright,Tennessee Williams, often threatened to publish a 'black book' describing the darker side of show business as he experienced it. Knowing he would not have time to complete it in his lifetime, he asked author Bruce Smith to write his personal memoirs of his years as Mr. Williams media and personal manager. That book is COSTLY PERFORMANCES/ Tennessee Williams: The Last Stage. It is now scheduled as a major motion picture release in 2005, starring Derek Jacobi as Tennessee Williams and Kevin Anderson as the author.
Customer Reviews:
The Kindness of a Stranger...Who Became a Friend.......2007-02-06
What is most striking about this book is its lack of sentimentality and incisive, sharp language. There has, indeed, been much written about Tennessee Williams, perhaps too much; the endless nonsense of his being a self-hating homosexual, the lurid tales of his promiscuity, the alleged Oedipal complexes, the temper tantrums and paranoia, and other such twaddle have all obfuscated many essential things about the genius who was Tennessee Williams. This excellent book stands out because it reminds us of Mr. Williams' power -as a person and a playwright- and at the same time it is not sycophantic nor is it cleverly bitchy. Smith, the author, meets Williams rather by accident and the unlikely friendship blossoms. I found the writing to be rather enthralling, evocative, and extremely well-crafted, which allows it to stand apart from many of the other (lesser) books on Williams. It is a memoir and does not purport to be anything but that, which allows the reader a keen insight into the life and work and humanity of the great Tennessee Williams. Because it is told from Smith's eyes the recounting of these stories is deeply personal and often effervescent with images and ideas; a far cry from the mawkish, self-consumed memoirs that pass as literature these days. I also liked the fact that Smith names some names and makes clear the case that the critics, PR people, and the various 'powers that be' in the theater and film worlds (i.e. agents, lawyers, producers) all played their part in Williams' miserable and protracted demise as much as the alcohol and pills did. And while Smith does not exculpate Williams from his vices he carefully explains why, he in fact, had them, and elucidates the nefarious forces constantly in conflict with the artist and his creative process.
Make no mistake this is Mr. Smith's story of his friendship with Tennessee, and thank goodness for its uniqueness, honesty, and edge. I think to truly appreciate this book one has to be familiar with serious writing (Eliot, Shaw) and not the Pop pap that sadly passes for publishable literature today. COSTLY PERFORMANCES and its author are both class acts and any writer or artist or person with a soul or fan of Tennessee Williams will love this book.
PS
The comment about grammatical errors is totally wrong and unfounded. And the Braun woman; who is she? "The author needed distance"? If she works in a library, how does she not know what a memoir is, and what the first person POV narrative offers the reader? These types of hit jobs are precisely the type of aforementioned `nefarious forces' to which I referred.
This is a valuable theatrical memoir.......2003-11-12
I am a young actor living in London where the plays of Tennesssee Williams are experiencing a great deal of interest within the entire theatre community: schools and universities; theatre companies; theatre media. All fans of his work are turning to background material on Williams and one of the most discussed -- and admired -- is Costly Performances/Tennessee Williams: The Last Stage by Bruce Smith. Mr Smith has, since writing this memoir, become actively involved in London's theatre world, saying he learned "at the master's hand" many enduring and valuable lessons re dramaturgy, play production and, more importantly, playwriting. His play 'Papal Gore' is scheduled for a West End staging. As well, his book about Mr. Williams is now being made into a major motion picture here in England. Real theatre people understand the sensitivity Mr. Smith brought to his portrayal of Mr Williams in his last, very difficult years and value it as a real contribution to 20th Century theatre history. It is highly literate but -- above all -- a very good read. This book, with Lyle Leverich's
The Unknown Tennessee Williams and the gossipy The Kindness of Strangers by Donald Spoto provide an indepth look at the author's life and times.
