Customer Reviews:
Great for any reader!.......2007-04-09
I have read these books and played the games. These books are stand alone and are wonderful. They are some of my all time favorite books and have been reread many times. They are enthralling, entertaining and so well written. I own them all seperately, The Book of Ti'ana my favorite. I think combining them in one volume is great too. But I do suggest reading them in a different order than they were written. According to chronological storyline, The Book of Ti'ana comes first, then The Book of Atrus, then The Book of D'ni. But they're still easy to follow in any order. Great great books! Buy them!
Still hoping for The Book of Marrim!
A sensational book.......2007-02-21
This book is superb, a "must read" for anyone. On top of that the games are GREAT. This book may be invaluable in the sense that it will add the storyline of the games and vise versa. With "MYST Online:URU Live" released (Feb/2007) this will definitely give you a great experience while exploring D'ni (The Deep City) in-game.
I would rate this book along with the likes of "The Lord of The Rings", "The Chronicles of Narnia" and even "Harry Potter".
Thank you Rand Miller for creating a great fantasy world for me to escape to. I'm looking foward to the release of "The Book of Marrim".
Simply wonderful........2007-02-12
My first book of the trilogy was the second, then I searched for and found the third. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the first book for a very long time - "out of print," etc, etc. So I was overjoyed to find this edition recently. I admire the intricate setting of the world of D'ni, and simply love them all. They're a must-read that I return to every few months. I think they're just as wonderful as the games, wonderful in a unique way.
Must read Myst Reader.......2007-01-11
This is a must read for anyone who is serious about the game. Not only does it give a rich history of the D'ni but it gives an in depth understanding of the core of the game...... the linking books. For fans of fantasy/SF, the story plot is great and the pace keeps you reading with anticipation.
Myst Reader.......2007-01-05
Great to read the history of the game, as I am a fan of making of movies etc, it looks like a whole world has been created.
Regards
Joyce Parratt

For Sale: Luxury Condos, Corpse Included
Just a stone's throw from Judith McMonigle Flynn's thriving Hillside Manor, workmen are busy renovating the elegantly decrepit Alhambra Arms into pricey condominiums. But concerned contractor George Guthrie fears that well-heeled potential buyers may blanch when they learn about the four-decades-dead body that was stashed behind the crumbling walls of the moldy manse. And ever-inquisitive Judith's discovery of some much more recent remains on the premises threatens to se property values through the floorboards--and Guthrie through the roof! Both her professional detective husband Joe and her partner-in-crime solving cousin Renie think Judith is bonkers to suspect that the two killings are connected. Nevertheless, Judith's ready to build a strong case to that effect -- unless some homicidal someone decides to deconstruct her first!
Customer Reviews:
A Streetcar Named Expire.......2005-08-29
This is an entertaining book in the "gifted amateur detective" genre. It lags in spots with undue detail to the cousins' foibles but in general is a good read.
Cousins go on a murder tour.......2001-05-24
Judith Flynn's cousin, Renie, talks her into going on a "murder tour" of their city. Judith is surprised and incensed when she finds out that the first stop is her own bed-and-breakfast where, indeed, there have been previous murders. The next stop is the Alhambra Arms, an old apartment complex which is being converted to condominiums. A 40-year-old corpse, which had been buried behind a wall, had recently been discovered. In order to encourage sales and satisfy those concerned about lingering spirits, an exorcist is brought in....the mystery deepens. Judith is convinced...two murders are related so she launches her own "unofficial" investigation, much to the disgust of husband Joe who is a private detective....Another enjoyable "cozy" from author Daheim.
Middle ages women find ostriches and murderers.......2001-03-25
This is a quaint story about a pair of middle aged (50ish) cousins who like to poke their noses where the police should be involved. It is written in an old fashioned, innocent style, suitable for juveniles as well as little old ladies. I have never read a Daheim book before. It kind of reminded me of Jessica Fletcher on "Murder She Wrote." There were plenty of inter-related characters and lots of suspects. The end was pleasantly surprising, but some of the loose ends were never tied well. The book was OK, but I would rather stick with other mystery writers.
The best Judith and Renie book yet........2001-02-28
In this mystery Judith and Renie take a murder mystery tour of their neighborhood. It is no surprise to the reader that Judith's bed and breakfast is featured, but Judith is furious at the lurid description of her home and rushes to confront the tour operator at the next stop. She follows him upstairs to the second floor of an historic apartment complex and finds the featured entertainment, an exorcist, dead of a gunshot wound.
This is a fast moving and entertaining mystery, the characters are very quirky, and there are red herrings aplenty. I find myself looking forward to the next one.
A mystery, straight up with humor!.......2001-01-29
Judith Flynn is not James Bond when it comes to solving mysteries because Bond himself was never this real nor this funny! Toss her cousin, Renie Jones into the mix and you have a pair of the zaniest, middle aged sleuths this side of....uhhhhh....well, any Agatha Christie characters. This was my first experience at reading a Mary Daheim book but, certainly not my last. It was a riotious read that kept me guessing to the very end (and then I was wrong about who did what to whom). Judith and Renie may not have the most conventional methods of getting to the bottom of the case, however, they have the brains plus pure dumb luck on their side. They're both a hoot and an easy read! Now I'm off to find another Daheim book for my reading pleasure.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting techniques, but not for the working vegan.......2007-09-17
The recipes are great, but in no way are they fast. Many of the items are not kept in a typical pantry. No meat analogs here, which is refreshing!
Average.......2006-08-28
I was dissapointed with this book. The recipe titles sounded really great, but after making a bunch of recipes I can honestly say that the dishes are just mediocre.
One BIG negative for me was the sparing use of vegetables in this book. You would think that this would be impossible in a vegan book, but unfortunately it is the case here. There are even recipes that use no vegetables at all save for a little onion (I am talking about non-dessert items, of course). I, personally, preffer to eat more balanced, healthier meals.
On the plus side, I did like the fact that soy-based meat substitutes were not given an emphasis here.
Best Cookbook I own.......2006-03-29
If I absolutely had to choose a favorite cookbook, this one would be it. If I think to myself, "I want to try a new recipe today (out of 84 cookbooks) but I NEED it to have good results, without question," this is the book I'd go to. I love the roasted sweet potato, onion, and apple soup and also the eggplant butter with potatoes. The recipes are rich and satisfying but also healthy, incorporating vegetables and grains.
One of my favorites.......2004-07-14
I've been cooking veg food for more than ten years and have 100 vegetarian and vegan cookbooks in my collection - this is one of my favorites, especially during summer when I want fresh, delicious, sparkling food. I love to page through this book in search of inspiration before heading to the market. The combinations are mouth-watering and most are relatively easy to fix. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for interesting vegan food.
so many problems with this book.......2004-04-21
Ok there are a few things I noticed wrong with this book. First, the quantities seem to be off, probably b/c the author is british, and the UK cups are different than the cups here. Second, the book is poorly organized - one would have to flip through most of it to find a recipe, since there are only four divisions - which I believe are appetizers, salads and light meals, main entrees, and deserts. And third, the recipes are just not practical to make - I like to try new things, but this book takes the exotic really too far. Plus she uses a lot of specialty ingredients that one would have to go hunting for. I found the whole book disappointing.
Book Description
Everyone knows the beauty and value of Tiffany glass lamps, vases, and windows. But few know that the masterful pieces from the Tiffany Studios would not have been possible without Arthur Nash, developer of the now-priceless Favrile glass, and his son Leslie, director of the studios division of glassmaking, pottery, and enamel. Leslies memoirs, with notes and references, tell the unfiltered and refreshing story of the studios heyday and substantially expand readers knowledge of Favrile glass while his photos comprise the largest collection of heretofore-unknown images of the studios earliest pieces. This historical find is an event in the decorative arts world and will appeal to both collectors and museums as well as to legions of novice antiquarians and fans of Antiques Roadshow. The books publication coincides with the Christies auction of the original Nash manuscript of Tiffany Favrile Glass.
Customer Reviews:
Nash Family Story: This book gives Tiffany worker's truth.......2002-03-28
An indispensable historical find for collectors and dealers. A Mint copy, heavily and beautifully illustrated in color and in black and white. Reproductions of images of early Tiffany pieces. Leslie Nash's father Arthur developed Favrile Glass; Leslie was the director of various Tiffany Furnace operations. So, much of this book is firsthand not only in the writing but in its images, too.
The world-renowned beauty and value of Tiffany glass lamps, vases, and windows are legendary. Few people know that the masterful pieces from the Tiffany's firm would not have been possible without Arthur Nash, developer of the now-priceless Favrile glass, and his son Leslie, director of the Tiffany Furnace's divisions of glassmaking, pottery, and enamel.
Leslie's notebook, along with annotations and references, provide an invaluable firsthand account of the studio's heyday while introducing the largest collection of heretofore unseen images of its earliest pieces. This historical find is a remarkable event in the decorative arts world and will appeal to both collectors and museums as well as those who use eBay and watch Antiques Road Show.
Book Description
Louis Comfort Tiffany's blown art glass, made from 1891 to 1928, embodies the artist's superior workmanship and satisfied his dream to introduce objects of both usefulness and beauty into the average household. These lovely objects, which he named "Favrile" and made in his New York studio, display Tiffany's reverence for antique glass and include the colored, gold iridescent, blue iridescent, and opalescent forms featured in this book. Over 240 color photographs of objects from many public and private collections, a very interesting text, and meticulously composed descriptions display Tiffany's intriguing art glass together for the first time in book form. Comments about their rarity accompany the descriptions.
Customer Reviews:
Overall, an excellent book showcasing the best of Tiffany.......1999-01-26
This is both a book for collectors , and a "coffee table" beauty. The photos are superb, the items selected are the "best of the best", and the narrative is well-written. Unfortunately, those items missing from the book are the Favrile tiles and small pieces--jewelry, scarabs; these are pieces that many collectors can afford and are still available.
A beautiful, well written guide to Tiffany Favrile Glass........1998-07-15
The beautiful photos and well written commentary make this book the finest on the subject available. Detailed descriptions along with superior photo quality make this a must for new collectors and experts alike.
Great source of information.......1998-05-08
I find this book visually exciting, and definately an addition to the collectible word in matters pertaining to the "Mystic" and "Magic" of the maveric artist "Louis Comfort Tiffany". If you own any Tiffany Favrile Glass this is one of the must have books.

Book Description
essays by Reyner Banham, Dolores Hayden, Thomas Hine, Thomas S. Hines, Esther McCoy, Helen Searing, Elizabeth A. T. Smith, and Kevin Starr
One of Southern California's most significant contributions to modern architecture was the Case Study House program sponsored by John Entenza's Art & Architecture magazine. Between 1945 and 1966, thirty-six experimental prototypes were designed and the majority built. Featuring some of the most important architects of the region and generation--including Charles Eames, Craig Ellwood, A. Quincy Jones, Pierre Koenig, Richard Neutra, and Raphael Soriano--the program reflected the modernist goal of reinventing the house as a way of redefining living. A number of the essayists in the book suggest that what made the houses distinctive and influential was not so much their International Style modernism as how that style was domesticated and scaled to the single-family house. . . and how it forecast what came to be known as the California lifestyle.
In addition to the eight main essays, the book, which was based on a 1989-1990 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, contains entries by the exhibition curator, Elizabeth A. T. Smith, and research assistant Amelia Jones on the thirty-six Case Study projects, documentation of six projects commissioned by MOCA, biographies of the thirty architects involved in the program, and a wealth of photographs, drawings, plans, and scale models.
Customer Reviews:
The complete story...just brilliant........2002-05-06
A first class study of the background to the Case Study Houses project created by the southern Californian Arts & Architecture magazine. This book was originally published in conjunction with an exhibition of the program at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1989-1990. It has plenty of photos and plans (though some the photos are just a little too dark) to illustrate the eight main essays. Editor Elizabeth Smith and Amelia Jones devote forty-two pages to the actual houses with succinct descriptions, plans and photos. The rest of this marvellous book has a huge amount of information relating to housing and the post-war environment and how the thirty-six prototype houses had a wide influence on the domestic architecture that followed.
I particularly enjoyed the two essays by Thomas Hines and also Dolores Hayden's essay `Model Houses for the Millions: architects' dreams, builders' boasts, residents' dilemmas'. The back of the book has six contemporary architects ideas and plans for housing in `Extending the Case Study Concept', followed by biographies, chronology, bibliography and index.
Was the project worth it? Architectural writer Esther McCoy summed it up as... `Perceived as a prototype that was to be enacted on a mass scale, the Case Study House program was a failure. Perceived as a prophetic statement, however, as a demonstration of trends and influences that would in one way or another achieve realization, the program must be judged a success. Perceived as art, finally, an approach suggested by their presence in The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Case Study Houses have won the right to be recognized and respected in the history of American design'.
You might think that everything about the CSH was included in this book but Elizabeth Smith has just edited another one called (you guessed it) Case Study Houses (Jumbo)a beautiful, very expensive and very heavy (twelve pounds) very big (opens up to over thirty-two inches wide) 440 page visual history with hundreds of photos (especially from Julius Shulman) plans and drawings. What was missing from this sumptuous volume was all the information in `Blueprints for Modern Living' so if you go for both books you really will have the COMPLETE CSH experience.
***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.
UPDATE: Taschen the publishers of the huge Case Study book I've mentioned above have now issued a very condensed version Case Study Houses: 1945-1966 (Taschen Basic Architecture) and Amazon have posted my review of the original with this new edition.
"The Search for the Postwar House".......2001-07-24
Nuetra, Soriano, Ellwood, Koenig - Blueprints for moder living is the catalogue for a major exhibit at the LA MoCA in the late 80's. It is an excellent sourcebook for those intersted in post war residential architecture. Modern Architecture (with a capital A) was going to change the world, as these bold case-study house designs show. This book contains a great deal more than just documenting the Case Study Building Program of the 50's. There are essays by noted historians Esther McCoy, Thomas Hines and Reyner Banham and others as well. These essays provide the background for the case study program and the mood of the public (especially in Califonia) after WW2. There is also an essay on publisher Joh Estnza and the Arts and Architecture Magazine that sponsored the program. The last chapter "Extending the Case Study Concept" documents the exhibit of six new designs (1987) commisioned by the Museum for a multi family housing project. Architects include: Eric Owen Moss, Toyo Ito and Hogetts & Fung. Lastly there are bio's on the architects, a timeline of events for the program and resourcefull bibliography. As always, the Julious Shulman photographs are stunning. This is a must have for the student of Modernism.

Book Description
In the first serious examination of Aubrey Beardsley's drawings, poetry, and unfinished erotic novel, this book looks beyond dismissals of Beardsley's work, and offers a stimulating reconsideration of his artistic perspective. By examining Beardsley's work within the social, artistic, and
literary context of the 1890's, Zatlin demonstrates that behind the choice of his subject matter there was more than simply a desire for sexual exploration: there was also a serious protest against hypocrisy and against the sexist social conventions that fostered that hypocrisy. She explores the
various types of women revealed in his art, and argues convincingly that gender relations were Beardsley's overwhelming concern, and that his main achievement emerged as an erotic art which challenged public sexual morality.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A Little Disappointing..........2006-07-20
I'm a huge Ella fan, but not much is available about her personal life. This is a decent book if you want to know more about Ella's career; in that respect, it's pretty exhaustive and very detailed. I was a little disappointed in the overall quality of the book, however. It has a cheap feel to it, the paper is shoddy, the pictures look as though they were run through a copier, and there are many, many typos and punctuation errors. I also wasn't crazy about the writing style. But for you die-hard Ella fans, I would suggest that you read the book and get what you can out of it.
Geoffrey Mark Fidelman LOVES Ella.......2006-04-06
Ella Fitzgerald is my favorite singer. I think that her best work is outstanding. I wish that this book was too. This is an okay biography of Ella's life and career. The author is clearly a fan and has some trouble being objective about some of Ella's work (especially her later work in which she had clearly lost a lot of her voice due to illnesses); however, the book gives you a detailed overview of Ella's numerous appearances on television, her performances with Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong, and her extensive recordings.
There is another book about Ella by Stuart Nicholson that you may want to read too. It is rather dry in comparison to this book, but I found that by blending Mr. Fidelman's almost-giddy prose with Nicholson's workman-like style, I did come away with a feeling for the woman who Ella was.
Not as bad as reviewed.......2005-03-24
The reviews are a little unfair. This is accurate and written with passion. The tone has clearly offended. However I do believe that the definitive biography has yet to be written. I hope somebody is putting it together as I write; maybe Will Friedwald or David Ritz will do it.
Laughably unprofessional.......2003-12-29
I must first commend Fidelman for his relatively thorough documenting of Ella's recordings, concerts, and television appearences; if this book is at all worthwhile, it is to learn more about the lady's career.
That being said, the author has here penned one of the most unprofessional works of biography ever published. He sets the tone early, recounting the ways he was denied access to Fitzgerald's inner circle with all the righteous, catty anger of the dorky girl excluded from the popular group in middle school. He punctuates various passages with tangents that have little or nothing to do with Fitzgerald's life and legacy, including a plea for record labels to reissue the works of the great stars of the mid-twentieth-century, and mentions of his having written liner notes for certain Fitzgerald releases. The majority of the book's narrative is written in a silly tone which belies any attempt by Fidelman to cast himself as a serious biographer. His insight into Fitzgerald the woman is nil. This is all in addition to his highly questionable and tabloid-esque recounting of a tragic interview with Joe Pass, suffering from terminal cancer, which seems only to be included due to Joe's saying he doesn't know why he's telling Fidelman this - perhaps an attempt by GMF to indicate some sort of personal relationship with the legendary guitarist.
I would not go so far as to tell Fitzgerald fans to avoid this book, nor would I send them running to Stuart Nicholson's dull, fact-heavy tome; a compelling, authoritative biography of the great jazz singer has not yet been written. I would instead advise possible readers to approach "First Lady of Song" with very low expectations, and then purely from an informational standpoint.
Unworthy Bio of the First Lady of Song.......2002-10-07
This alleged biography of Ella Fitzgerald is seriously flawed and not recommended. At its most basic, the book is simply not a serious biography written in a professional manner. For example, the author CONSTANTLY interupts the narrative to give the reader HIS opinions of each and every song she sings, her weight and even her wigs. Even the captions to the photos are annoying ("Still hiding her figure for Verve"..."Oh those awful wigs") This is not acceptable or serious writing for a biography. He also seemingly attempts to convince the reader that he knew Ella personally, sometimes referring to her (annoyingly) as "Miss Fitz." Another complaint: the author talks knowingly about live recorded concert albums leading the reader to believe he has some inside knowlege of a concert, when in reality he is simply relating what is on the actual album for everyone to hear. He also refers to others he supposedly interviewed by their first names ("Keeter" Betts, "Danny" Kaye). Was he really on a first name basis with these people? Of course, we don't know who he interviewed, or when he interviewed them, because there aren't any notes in the book to prove it. If you want a serious bio of the great singer, instead of this thing, I recommend the much-respected "Ella Fitzgerald" by Stuart Nicholson.
