Book Description
Hailed as one of the finest novels to come out of the Second World War, The Naked and the Dead received unprecedented critical acclaim upon its publication and has since enjoyed a long and well-deserved tenure in the American canon. This fiftieth anniversary edition features a new introduction created especially for the occasion by Norman Mailer.Written in fascinating detail, the story follows a platoon of foot soldiers who are fighting for the possession of the Japanese-held island of Anopopei.Composed in 1948 with the wisdom of a man twice Mailer's age and the raw courage of the young man he was, The Naked and the Dead is representative of the best in twentieth-century American writing.

Solid, but not the classic I envisioned........2007-09-11
Maybe it's the movies.......Maybe it's the movies that have de-sensitized me to expect that the subtle, internal nature of literature could possibly match the over-the-top, external stimuli of cinema. I guess this is probably no more apparent than in "war stories", where I was expecting something along the lines of "Saving Private Ryan", or "Flags of Our Fathers".
Throughout most of this book, I found myself about as lost as the platoon that was sent out to "recon" the rear lines of the Japanese Army. I struggled in the first half of the book, admittedly. Where were the battles? Where was the karnage? I was rather disappointed that nothing was really happening; that all the U.S. company was doing was preparing to prepare for a battle that they knew was possibly months away.
However, As I was finishing this book, I realized that maybe war is more properly illustrated by stories like this. Maybe war is monotonous; boring; anti-climactic; as the nature of this book describes. Maybe war involves a battle of wills and personalities more so than the battle between armies.
Probably more so than any novel I've read, the author brings you deep into the lives and backgrounds of the major players. You're given an opportunity to actually know each character, to the point where you feel it when something happens to them.
This book is not for everyone, and it took me a while to really understand and accept what the author had intended. Nevertheless, if you have time and patience it is worth it.
Not Your Grandpa's War Story.......2007-08-09
Or maybe it is your grandpa's war story; I wouldn't know because my grandpa was in the navy. Anyway, those looking for a rollicking action adventure about WWII in the Pacific had better look elsewhere. It's not a John Wayne movie or even "Saving Private Ryan." This is a psychological study of men grappling with the elements and themselves in a hellish environment. (Substitute the jungle for sand dunes and tropical humidity for 130-degree heat and Japanese soldiers for Arab terrorists and it would fit perfectly into modern times.)
This is a fictional account of the taking of an island in the Pacific by American forces. The story focuses primarily on a recon platoon lead by the abusive tyrant Sergeant Croft. There are about a dozen men in the platoon at the beginning including the Mexican sergeant Martinez, the former hobo Red, the Jew trying to fit in Goldstein, the intellectual Jew/platoon runt Roth, a couple good ol' boys Wilson and Ridges, gangster wanna-be Polack, brownnoser corporal Stanley, and seemingly All-American boy Brown. There's also General Cummings and his surly Ivy League aide Hearn, who have a very conflicted and adversarial relationship.
This relationship ends with Hearn being assigned to the recon platoon for a quixotic mission to explore behind the Japanese lines. This patrol leads to three men dying, two quickly and one very slowly.
But again this isn't a book about the war. There's really only one real battle and a couple of skirmishes. The real war for the soldiers is with the jungle and themselves--physically and mentally. A lot of the book details the platoon's fatigue as they tramp through the jungle or work on constructing a road to resupply the front.
None of these guys come off as your stereotypical characters from a war movie and Mailer's greatest strength is delving beneath the tough guy surfaces to show the fragile individuals underneath. Several sections of the book are referred to as the "time machine" and detail the platoon members before they went to war. None of them are heroes, but just ordinary guys who don't care about causes and flags, only about getting back home to their families and friends.
There's no glory to be had anywhere in this very long, very detailed narrative. If you're looking for action and excitement, look elsewhere--maybe ask your grandpa to tell one of his stories. If you want a realistic portrait of war, then look no further.
That is all.
How else can you explain the impact of war on the participants except.......2007-08-01
by reflecting the tension everyone in it is under while they prepare and prepare and wait and wait for something to happen? The agony of anticipation and the unknown. Then the suddeness of what does happen. Norman Mailer does this very well and I especially liked that there were no answers to anything - just life in a brutal situation. And it goes on....
Don't misunderstand me, for me it was a page turner. I thought it was great.
Could've been better - Could've been worse.......2007-06-30
Yes this is a World War II book. It is not really packed full of action, it is more a psychological study of some of the American soldiers. It is a slow book, but it is really, really slow in the beginning. It is like meeting a group of people it takes a while to know and remember who is who. Some reviewers didn't like the semi-profanities. I can live with it, my mind can simply substitute the proper four letter word in each case. What I did not like is that the book is over written, even though you find signs of great writing. Many of the characters are questioning what causes some soldiers to be killed and others not killed, luck, fate, etc. What I did like is when one protagonist was shot their was little explanation. It was left out which leaves the reader as shocked as the other soldiers probably would've been. This leaves the reader to try and provide and explanation, which is what I believe the author is trying to achieve. The description of the humid jungle weather was beaten into the ground. The "Time Machine" was an interesting literary tool to provide background on many of the soldiers in the platoon. I also wonder if this book would be popular with readers who were not to familiar with this time period.
Overwritten Work of a Young Writer.......2007-06-01
It's the overwritten work of a young writer.
He feels he has something to say, and boy, does he say it. And say it. And say it.
Am I starting to annoy you?
The story lacks drama and wit, and portrays characters who are all uniformly narrow, prejudiced, cynical, and, it seems, clinically depressed. The writing confirms this picture of each character, over and over.
It seems as if Mailer tried to turn an ordinary adventure story into something more profound by padding it with "insights."
And yet we never really get inside the characters. What is intended as insight is rarely any deeper than what they themselves might say out loud. Mailer could have left out most of the narrative and just let us listen to them.
The device of interspersing the story with flashbacks was irritating. I suppose this is a backhanded compliment to the writer, since he made me want to know what was going to happen next in the present, without interruption.
James Jones's "The Thin Red Line" has everything this book is missing. Jones's book is a wry, sardonic masterpiece. And it's succinct.
The reason I give Mailer three stars is that he showed remarkable command of his craft for one so young, and so, despite hating something on almost every page, I was drawn in by the vividness of some of the writing, however self-indulgent.
And being first on the scene with this kind of story made Mailer something of an innovator. Enough to convince the Pulitzer judges.

Book Description
When a friend is violently killed after thrusting three musical cassettes into Jonathan Derry's hands, the young physician is hurled headlong into a terrifying nightmare. Because the seemingly harmless tapes contain a computerized horse-betting system that could make whoever possesses them a very rich man-or a very dead one.
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Interesting one that I read to start with, revolving around a computer prediction program. Little did I know at the time about what reading about computer programs to predict horse racing would lead to. Definitely a good yarn, this one, certainly would recommend it to others that like this sort of story.
Not his best - but the villian and ending are haunting........2004-09-25
I have read all his novels, some more than twice... I enjoy hanging out with the author. The two story lines are just a bit distracting in this novel... but if you put the book down for a day between brothers, it is no big matter. And the villian is pretty scary!! shudder
14 year gaps in books about computers? Try again!.......2001-12-15
Gotta agree with the other reviewer's comment about mixing 14 year gaps in stories with plots centering about computers. I actually program these silly things for a living, and listening to this book in 2001 was interesting purely from this historical computer languages angle. However, I found myself distracted througout wondering if it was the initial story about Jonathan that was intended to take place in '81 or the second story 14 years later. I don't think I buy it either way: programs don't last 14 years.
My verdict: centering the plot on a computer program? Good.
Breaking the story into two, changing narrators, and setting the 2nd half 14 years later? Good.
Both? Not so good.
Try Whip Hand or In The Frame instead.
Francis Never Fails.......2001-01-03
Dick Francis is one of the finest mystery/thriller writers going. This book, one of the first mysteries I ever read, hooked me to Francis's saddle during my teens. I've enjoyed the ride ever since.
Definitely not the way to start your love of Francis.........1998-04-29
As a really big Dick Francis fan, I would be really sad if someone heard all these great things about this author, picked up this book, and then never tried another book again. It's not a very good one. The premise is good, the characterizations as usual are very nice, but the plot goes nowhere and stays there from about halfway in until the last, disappointing page. Changing narrators in the book was a nice risk, but it ruins everything. Having the book be about computers and then putting in a 14-year gap was also not the wisest thing. If you want to start off on the right Francis Foot, try PROOF or WILD HORSES or ENQUIRY, and there you're neck-deep in characterization, plot and thrills. Francis is a master, but even masters have an off day.

Not a keeper.......2005-10-28
From the back cover:
It's either happily ever after or the road to disaster when a couple walks down the aisle. For both Sharon and Penny, their first marriages were disasters. Now they are teetering on the edge of finding love again...
1) Love's Sting by Catherine Spencer
Ten years ago, after a tragic miscarriage, Sharon and Clinton had parted bitterly. Now her ex-husband seems intent on renewing their relationship. But as much as Sharon yearns to have Clinton back in her life, she fears what might happen if he discovers her deceit.
2) The Wedding Effect by Sophie Weston
One painful marriage experience has put Penny Dane off men for life. Still, she agrees to help out at her sister's lavish society wedding. There she meets the breathtakingly handsome Zoltan Guard. His teasing blue eyes and lazy charm are irresistible but, hurt once by a man, how will she feel if all Zoltan wants is an affair.
And my review:
The first story was entertaining, but not great. I found the mystery in this book to be implausible. I'm not going to give it away, but let's just say that I have suffered a miscarriage, and after reading up a lot on it, I find it hard to believe that this could happen in modern medical science, especially with him being unaware of what was going on. Also, I found Sharon's lies (especially in the beginning, where she basically trapped him into marriage) a big turn-off that made it hard to like her. Still, it was entertaining while I read it, just not something I would bother to re-read or to recommend.
I never finished the second story. I just don't like the "affairs without committment that become true love". Sorry, but I don't believe in casual affairs. I think that they are wrong, so I couldn't like the characters. And if you don't like the characters, you don't really care what happens to them, so why bother reading the story? And what the heck kind of a name is Zoltan Guard? That sounds like a character from a video game! I could've got past that if I'd liked him, but I didn't, so I couldn't.

Sorry, wrong story.......1998-09-07
After I sent out the story review, I saw that I have made a terrible mistake. The review that I made was about 'The Stolen Heart'. The main characters are Travis and Paige. Again, sorry for the mistake.
Love-hate relationship between two stubborn persons.......1998-09-07
I found the story very refreshing, romantic, interesting and compeling. It shows this two persons placed in a situation where they have to live together, share their emotions & fears, and yet those same things throws them into the arms of love towards each other. It taught me that love is not that complicated but that it is complex in a way.

Society of Mysteries.......2003-06-14
Halls of the Arcanum provides detailed information on one of the most fascinating groups in the World of Darkness. This book was released during the Year of Hunter for Mage the Ascension. Though they don't hunt mages or other supernaturals like the Inquisition, they do pose a serious threat due to the tremendous amount of information they have. The Arcanum is after all a society that studies the unknown. This book is ideal for storytellers who want to run mystery campaigns with an emphasis on investigating the supernatural with normal humans. The presentation and the mood of the book worked extremely well. The horrors of the unknown are in every corner and it's up to them to bring light to the darkness.
Very informative.......2000-09-27
The Arcanum is typically an organization that easily falls into the shadows in most WoD games for several reasons... First of all this is an organization consisting, at least mostly, of mortals - according to a lot of people the WoD consists of vampires, wraiths, mages, werewolves and a whole bunch of other weird creatures as well as a few hundred mortals for these people to fight over. At least it looks like it judging from the amount of information you can find on mortals in most WoD books. This book is an exception. In here you can find information on the Arcanum as well as information on what means the mortals have to fight back against the supernatural. I run a vampire game myself and after I got this book (even though it's really an addition for MtA) one of my players immediately wanted to play a mortal... Mortals exist in the WoD and time and again they do actually have a clue about what's going on - that is what this book is about.

What your food cravings mean and how to overcome them.
Customer Reviews:
A book that delivers on its promise........2000-06-06
Do you crave certain foods? Or maybe you find yourself eating everything in sight when things are going bad for you? Or do you fall off your diet because you are so hungry? Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., offers solutions to these and other food-related problems in Constant Craving: What Your Food Cravings Mean And How To Overcome Them. Based on her research, which included scientific studies, ancient Chinese medicine, and interviews with her clients, Dr. Virtue says that food cravings are related to our emotions. She defines a food craving as an "obsessive desire for a specific type of food." This is different than a preference, and it often leads people to eat in very unhealthy ways. "Food cravings often stem from basic unmet needs for fun, excitement, or love," according to Dr. Virtue. She explains how each food craving can be traced to a specific emotional need, often allowing people to heal themselves. For example, people who crave nuts haven't met their needs for fun and pleasure in their lives. She devotes a chapter to each kind of craving, explaining how the constituents of each kind of food work in the body to create an illusion of feeling better. For example, nuts contain pyrazine, "which triggers the pleasure center of the brain." She then offers suggestions as to how the emotional needs can be satisfied in ways other than eating, and finishes each chapter with affirmations. Specific cravings discussed include: chocolate, dairy products, salty snack foods, spicy foods, liquids, breads, rice, pasta, nuts and nut butters, cookies, cakes, pies, candy, and high-fat foods. Dr. Virtue emphasizes that meeting the underlying needs as the best way to overcome food cravings. She says that the appetite must be healed, not killed. Several easy quizzes provide guidance as to what kind of eater you are, such as "binge eater" or "stress eater." She also explains how to keep from overeating at holidays and restaurants. She promises that the information in Constant Cravings "will allow you to conduct your own food-craving interpretations. I'll teach you the meaning behind each type of food, so you can analyze--and reduce--your own appetite." Readers will find that she keeps that promise.

Constant Craving : What Your Food Cravings Mean and How to O.......2000-04-18
What I especially liked about this book, is that it is not just another diet book. She states simply, eat less and excercise more and you will lose weight. What she does talk about is what type of eater are you and then analyzes what that means and then follows that up with a 5 Steps to Reduce Fattening Feelings, which I think is good, and which I am going to start using today!
not very helpful.......2000-04-18
This book was disappointing. There are better options on the same topic.
I thought this book was really helpful........1999-04-23
It really helped me discover what i really had a craving for. It made me understand more about myself. I think it is a great book if you have constant cravings for certain foods and want to find out more about it.

Cottage: America's Favorite Home Inside and Out celebrates the romance and simplicity that give cottage homes their endless appeal. With inspiring locations, colorful gardens, cozy interiors, and intriguing nooks and crannies, the 24 cottages featured in this unique collection are sure to delight with equal measures of charm and diversity. Illustrated with spectacular photographs and watercolor drawings, the cottages span the country from Florida to the Pacific Northwest, with stops along the way at a converted schoolhouse in Missouri, a prefab cottage in Wisconsin, a straw-bale cottage in California, and a cottage community in Washington state.
Whether new or remodeled, permanent home or weekend getaway, each of the cottages is intimately scaled, seamlessly linked to the landscape, and brimming with personal detail...all good reasons why the cottage remains America's favorite home, inside and out.
"Cottages delight our eyes, warm our hearts, and soothe our souls. The fact is, at some point in our lives we all need them. If there's a cottage in your future, you'll find an abundance of inspiration and information in this book. No way will you get to the last page without have sketched out plans for your own 'someday' cottage!"

Book in excellent condition...I guess I like this book a lot (after I received it, I noticed I already owned it!
Large ego statements; only a few cottages.......2006-11-03
If you are looking for small scale, cozy cottages you will be disappointed. For example, at page 37 there is a very comtemporary box style, three story structure, perhaps 2,800 square feet; the facade is deceptively board and batten, painted barn red. The living/dining/kitchen is one big open room, perhaps 36' by 14' with a 16' high ceiling. One outside wall, 36 by 16, is glass, which is impressive, but not conducive to an intimate, cozy milieu.
At page 77 there is a three story prefab 'art moderne' structure that makes an impressive architectural statement, but it is by no stretch a "cottage".
At page 187 is a remodeled barn: it's three stories, all open inside, ceilings 16 feet or more high, with a wall of glass. It's certainly not a cottage. It doesn't even look much like a barn anymore.
The book cover suggests "each of the cottages is intimately scaled, seamlessly linked to the landscape...", which is just merchandising, promotional nonsense. For the most part these structures are just large houses, ego statements for the owner and architect. The authors are revisionists, changing the meaning of 'cottage' to include whatever they wished to put in their book.
Boring, boring.......2006-06-06
I love cottage style and have a nice collection of books. Based on consumer reviews I bought it and boy was I disappointed. It was, to say the least, a snooze as far as the photos go. Since I cannot afford to buy a home presently, I love to get lost in the photos of a wonderfully photographed book. This is NOT one of them.
Inspirational.......2006-05-18
A sampling of cottages from across the country - backgrounds on the owners of the cottages, beautiful interior and exterior pictures and floor plans. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures - very inspirational.

in response to the other review.......2004-01-08
please don't take too much of this book to heart. Rock stars of this caliber need to protect themselves and not give up too much info about their personal life. Personally, I get a kick out of how he plays with the media and keeps everyone guessing. I was fortunate enough to meet him in his own home and even spend a good deal of time in his house with him and his crew. As far as the MTV Cribs thing being a big lie - I designed the media systems in his house and believe me those cars are real... except the Bentley, I think, but he said that in the interview. Whether he actually drives them? Who cares? If I had that much dough, I'd have someone cart me around LA as well.
Illusions..........2003-12-02
Having been a fan of Rob since his first chord in Take That, I was extremely disappointed by some of the revelations in this author's work. It's one of two things... Either the author, Paul, is extremely jealous/bitter about Rob's success... or it's all pretty much true with some hearsay mixed in, and it's not a very good reflection upon his personality. He struck a nerve when he mentioned... women always want to have sex with him and then 'fix' him. Reading about his serious drug and alchohol addiction almost put me off because of the type of person he seemed to turn into when he was under the influence. I'm extremely open minded, so the slight jibes that he might actually be gay, they didn't bother me half as much as hearing Kinsella apparently quoted that 'he was an extremely boring man.' 'Not much to talk about'. 'Self obsessed'... This was disturbing and I have to say, this piece of work has influenced the way I see Rob for forever... I'm a transplanted Brit too.. and I understand that no one here was privy to his tormented years in the late nineties, but if he doesn't make it, oh well. May he find whatever it is he's so desperately searching for (and get his driver's licence on the way. What disappointment to find out he doesn't even drive and hasn't passed his test) This means the LA version of Cribs was a big lie. And the gay men in his lounge may well have been indicative of his true preference. Oh well, he has the ability to be a great entertainer, but for God's Sake Rob, Get over yourself!
