Reads like a tv soap opera.......2007-08-22
What can one say about authors like Sidney Sheldon, Harold Robbins and the like? Their novels, while difficult to classify in a specific genre, would make fantastic made-for-tv movies. The Other Side of Midnight is no exception.
The story of Noelle Page, a humble fisherman's daughter who became one of the most famous, powerful women in the world. A short affair with Larry Douglas leaves her pregnant and desperately in love, waiting for him to return to marry her. Larry, however, has completely forgotten his promise and moved on. Noelle vows then and there to spend the rest of her life seeking revenge against Larry.
This long, sometimes confusing story entwines the lives of Noelle, Larry, and his wife Catherine. The opening scene reveals that Noelle and Larry are on trial for Catherine's murder.... the rest of the book deals with how they got there, starting with Noelle's childhood. It's a gripping read, definitely difficult to put down for more than a few minutes. The worst part, I think, is never being entirely sure who to feel sorry for. None of the characters are entirely evil or without some redeeming qualities, except maybe Larry.
Ironically, this was made into a movie by 20th Century Fox. They expected it to be a hit, while Star Wars (made and released at the same time) was expected to be a dud, so they marketed the films as a package deal (theatres that wanted to book The Other Side of Midnight had to contract to book Star Wars first). Well.... it sort of backfired. Star Wars, as everyone knows, took off like a shot, and The Other Side of Midnight floundered and has long been lost to obscurity. The book was definitely much more poignant than the film. I'd recommend it highly as a distraction-read, but literature it ain't.
Wow!.......2007-05-30
Excellent, excellent book. This came out when I still a kid, but I remember mom and aunts discussing it. Nearly thirty years later, I finally had a chance to read it, and it really stands the test of time.
Right from the get-go it sucks you in with an interesting cast of characters flying into Greece for a trial of a famous actress. Turns out she's the "whore," and the otherside of midnight for her is, Catherine, the "virgin." How these two end up in each other's lives and what they do to each other...well that's to read and find out. The ending is a zinger as well.
Truly there is nothing bad about this about this book. It's a bit "larger-than-life", but that's just what makes it so fun.
Again and again and again!.......2007-04-15
I don't why they bother giving the Nobel Prize for literature to the bleak plays of Harold Pinter (2005) or the dreary novels of Kanzaburo Oe (1994), when we've had such a great writer as Sidney Sheldon around for the past four or five decades. This is one writer who deserved the ultimate prize, although now it is - alas - too late.
"The Other Side of Midnight" is perhaps his masterpiece. It is the story of Noelle, a naive young French girl who falls for a handsome American aviator during World War II. But when the war ends, Noelle waits in vain for her handsome flyer to return. Alone and abandoned, the young lady finds that she has to make her way by selling her body. She quickly discovers that she can make her sex appeal pay off and sleeps her way into movie stardom. All this time she keeps tabs on her aviator, who has returned to the US and started a family.
Several years later, when he loses his job, Noelle, now wife of a Greek millionaire, arranges to hire her former lover as her private pilot. Not recognizing his wealthy boss as the fragile young mistress he knew during the war, he is bewildered by Noelle's cruel treatment of him. This game of deception leads them both into very deadly territory.
A great book makes you want to read it. At the end of the day, that's the only prize worth struggling for: the prize of being read again and again and, in Sydney Sheldon's case, again and again and again and again...
Totally Captivating.......2007-03-15
This is definitely a Sidney Sheldon masterpiece. I got so totally hooked by this story that I had to go buy the DVD and can't wait to watch the movie. Sheldon takes us through the time span of 1919 to 1947 and the lives of two women, Noelle Page and Catherine Alexander. We recognize how their characters were formed as children and the subsequent actions and reactions of their life experiences resulting in the amazing tale of money, power, intelligence and revenge. The focal point of their lives is summed up in the character of Larry Douglas, American WWII pilot, honored for his heroic efforts in the war. Prior to the War, he met Noelle and she fell head over heals in love with him. He promised to marry her, encouraged her to go buy a wedding gown and then never returned, initiating in Noelle, a lifelong desire of revenge. Larry moves on to become a hero as a fighter pilot, attaining the status of Captain and loving and leaving practically every woman he makes contact with. He meets Catherine Alexander in Hollywood, posing as an actor in an Army recruiting film. So enthralled by his charm, Catherine ends up marrying him very quickly. She is lured by his man-of-the world charisma and Larry uses her naiveté as the tool of conquest to take Catherine away from Bill Fraser, the man she is seriously involved with and a true friend to her as well. Larry has always enjoyed the hunt more than the kill and Catherine, in this case, became the "hunt." Once the war is over, Larry is bored with his wife and his many routine piloting jobs which he cannot hold onto mainly because he can't deal with taking orders and following rules. Noelle has been following his every move through a private detective agency over the course of seven years, and decides this lull in Larry's career is the perfect time to seek her revenge. Sheldon is an amazing author taking the reader to France to tell Noelle's story, and then Chicago, Washington and Hollywood for Catherine's. Their lives merge in Athens, Greece where they all become connected to the Aristotle Onassis of the tale, Constantin Demiris. The climax and conclusion of this story takes so many twists and turns and of course hits the reader hard with the finale. I am on my way to order the sequel, "Memories of Midnight." My cousin read this book 30 years ago and remembered what a masterpiece it is to this day; she recommended it to me. The fact that a story can stick with a person for so long, explains the greatness of its content and the magnitude of its author.
The first, the best.......2006-06-27
The master of insipid novels wrote his ultimate masterpiece (if we can call it by this name) in 1973. THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT is a real page-turner, you will read it in two days maximum... Of course, the usual Sheldon's flaws are all there for everyone interested to see (read) them, but I think this book is the benchmark for the expression "guilty pleasure..."

Book Description
Now appearing for the first time together, three of Sidney Sheldon's number one bestselling novels—The Other Side of Midnight, Rage of Angels, and Bloodline—are featured in this celebratory collection.
The Other Side of Midnight is Sidney Sheldon at his best. This page-turner is full of tortured romantic entanglements, reverses of fortune, thrilling suspense, and ultimate justice. In Paris, Washington, and a fabulous villa in Greece, an innocent American becomes a bewildered, horror-stricken pawn in a game of vengeance and betrayal. She is Catherine Douglas, a woman caught in a web of four lives intertwined by passion as her handsome husband pursues an incredibly beautiful film star . . . and as Constantin Demeris, a legendary Greek tycoon, tightens the strands that control them all.
Rage of Angels features the memorable, mesmerizing heroine Jennifer Parker, a razor-sharp but beautiful attorney on her way up the New York political ladder until the Mafia's schemes win her the hatred of an implacable enemy—and a love more destructive than hate. She journeys into the dangerous, dramatic, and dark world of organized crime and flashbulb-lit courtrooms, where ambitious and ruthless prosecutors begin their climb to power, and she travels to her own personal hell and back again.
Bloodline is one of the best of Sheldon's blockbuster thrillers. Roffe and Sons is a family firm, an international empire filled with desperate, cash-hungry family members. At its head was one of the wealthiest men in the world—a man who has just died in a mysterious accident and left his daughter, Elizabeth, in control of the company. Now as this intelligent, tough, and gorgeous woman dares to save—not sell—Roffe and Sons, she will have to outwit those who secretly want her power . . . and the unknown assassin who wants her life. Bloodline is a sweeping novel of high financial intrigue on three continents, love, murder, danger, and suspense.

Mystery.......2007-09-18
I love Sidney Sheldon's writing. He keeps you in suspense throughout the story. I just love that there were 3 of his stories in 1 book. I hope they publish more of his writings in this manner. I highly recommend Sidney Sheldon's writings.

Truly awful-juvenile.......2004-07-01
This is from the man who writes new age Blaxploitation like "The Brothers" and "Deliver Us from Eva" (which he stole from Shakespeare). I'll stick to Gar Anthony Haywood, G Phillips, E T Bland, Christopher Chambers, L Marie Wood, Grace Edwards, Frankie Bailey et al.
AWESOME.......2003-09-11
Suspence, Mystery and Murder at its best. This book was well put together. The writing was great. This is my first time I've read one of his books. I will purchase his other books. Two thumbs up for Mr. Hardwick.
"SUPREME JUSTICE" for all!.......2003-01-08
This is an engaging story that's not as fast-moving as COLD MEDINA or DOUBLE DEAD, but still has enough to keep the plot moving and the characters engaging. U.S. Attorney Marshall Jackson has been asked by a Supreme Court Justice to take the case of the murder of his friend, Judge Farrel Douglas, who was assassinated in front of audience while giving his speech. Not long after that, a political activist announce on televised cameras that because the deceased judge was doing more harm than good in the black communities, he took in upon himself to kill him and make a stand for all african-americans. For Marshall, the case was open and shut, except for the fact that evidence begins to surface that he didn't do it, and that an outside force is making him take the fall. If that isn't enough, employees in his department are being killed or targeted, and to cap it all off, the trail to the killer is being led back to the department he works for. Another engaging read, Mr. Hardwick.
Fast and Absolutely Intense!.......2001-11-15
Hardwick, is one of the few black authors out, today, that gives you what readers are truly looking for- ORIGINALITY. His books are fast, suspense driven, eventful and the twist and turns in each are unpredictable, so much so, that you eagerly turn page after page anticipating the next move. I thoroughly enjoyed, Supreme Justice. I felt obligated to purchase Double Dead and was just as pleased. His style is like a gush of wind on a wintery night! It wakes you, enegizes you, and startles the mind ! I can't wait to read his next effort.
Great Book.......2001-11-09
This book was very good, but my favorites are Cold Medina and Double Dead. Mr. Hardwick is a talented writer. Look forward to his next book.

A very Interesting Book.......2004-04-10
Different from the WOTC books, this has a lot more information and story related items that a lot of people will find useful. Some will feel there isn't enough game mechanics. I beg to differ. Captures the feel of the Scarred Lands very well.
Scarred Lands dont transplant.......2004-02-20
This book is of good value if you are running a Scarred Lands game. But I find the information to be so specific that it wont make a easy fit to other settings.
There are plenty of feats and prestige classes to keep every one happy, as well as some new ideas about cabals and sorcerer tradtions (blood lines)

Cooking with Miso.......2006-08-05
Great book! Explains all the different kinds of miso, how each is used in cooking. A good book for anyone.
Thanks
A must for the miso beginner........2004-06-29
This is a great cook book! Very readable with an excellent introduction on miso and its medicinal qualities. For the miso beginner, this book is a must. I particularly enjoyed the authors's introductory paragraphs that proceed each recipe. They offer a personal touch and often set the stage for the recipe to follow. Good stuff. I've used miso to treat my high cholesterol with great success, and I'm always looking for new recipes. Other miso cook books I've seen are full of complicated recipes with exotic ingredients not found on the average person's shelf. The Miso Book is refreshingly diferent. Most of the ingredients can be found in any cook's pantry. I've tried a few recipes, and so far, my favorites are Brother Steve's Zesty Crimson Dressing (pg 66), and Broiled Catch of the Day with Salsa Verde (pg 166). The Salsa Verde is a knock-out punch. Excellent, with a variety of flavors that assault your taste buds in rapid succession. But, don't limit the sauce to fish. We tried it on pasta. It was yummy. The Belleme's have done it again. You gotta to get this book.
Book Description
Compiled by a leading jewelry authority, this beautiful book features over 400 pieces in color with a comprehensive text. An exciting publication representing over 25 different collections. 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Lillian Baker was an author for more than four decades. Her first book on Hatpins Hatpin Holders in 1976 was the first and only worldwide definitive book on the subject. She also authored 100 Years of Collectible Jewelry, Plastic Jewelry of the 20th Century, Fifty Years of Collectible Fashion Jewelry, Art Nouveau Art Deco Jewelry, and Creative Collectible Miniatures. REVIEW: A reader from Frederick, MD says, "I read 'No Dragons On My Quilt' to my daughter about 12 years ago after borrowing it from a library. Of course we ordered our very own copy. Back then we got it in hardback. Our whole family loves the book so much that we tried to order an extra copy for my son a few years ago. We wanted copies for each child to be passed down to their own kids when they were grown. (It's that kind of book.)"

Disappointed.......2007-08-22
I was really disappointed I spent the money on this book. All the price references are in the back, which means taking more time to find them when doing research. I rarely use it.
Name recognition,craft idea designs,Review Mistreglo,.......2007-08-04
The value in this book is definitely for the beginner jewelry collector. Many jeweler names are mentioned, with colored pictures of some of their designs. This book is a good springboard for further detailed research by jeweler name recognition. The book also holds value for crafters, there are many excellent colored photographs, of unique designs. The book I purchased did have updated prices to 2001. I could not use this book to value any of my pieces except one, and that was worth the price of the book, because I undervalued the beads, shown in the piece.
I would not overpay for this book, at a good deal, add this book to your order. Probably best as a library reference book. Quick read. Value is in jeweler name recognition, list, and for jeweler craft ideas.
I have many vintage family pieces that I have no information on identifying from this book, and I don't think this book would aid me in collecting either. I think the prices shown are rather low.

The inside to vintage fashion jewelry collectibles.......2000-04-05
This book was very informative. It gave the information I needed about some collectible jewelry I am accumulating. It gives a more in-depth history of the manufacturing of many collectible brands than other books I have seen. I would highly recommend this book for vintage jewelry collectors.

This beautiful book is likely to convince you that the most innovative of today's arts can't be seen on the computer screen or canvas, but instead on and in fabric.
I was absolutely stunned by the 600 pieces of fine art and craft created from fibers and dyes. The range of design, composition, color combinations, and sheer unbounded creativity are extraordinary. Highly recommended for anyone interested in contemporary and innovative arts, and a great ideas resource for traditional and digital designers--including creators of Web graphics. (In fact, I've given a copy of this book as a Christmas present to a multimedia artist friend of mine at Microsoft who also designs book and CD covers).

Awful!.......2002-05-14
Save your money! I bought this book based on it's one good review and was horribly disappointed with the work shown in it. Downright bad stuff from the 'dogs playing poker' school of artists. I saw only one or two works in the entire book that were remotely inspirational. They should have called this book "World's Worst Fiberarts Designs".

A truly outstanding overview of the diverse world of Fiber Art. From traditional loomwork, to cutting edge computer generated imagery on fabric and everything in between, see the latest work from outstanding artists in the field. For those of us who live and work in our creative spaces, this book is a great inspiration. It really helped me dream bigger about my work space, and gave me some great ideas on how to organize for beauty as well as funtion.
If you love vintage details (and even not) this book presents wonderful references for organizing and creating a workspace that is personal and inviting. Some of the artists studio spaces really push the idea of craft storage... Also the women featured in the book, who have used their art to make a business for themselves, can be empowering. Slumping in the shadows.......2005-02-05
Don't you just hate it when a biographer researches, investigates, does all the right things -- and churns out a boring, rushed-feeling book? Me too. So it is with Stanley Booth and "Keith: Standing in the Shadows," a biography that has been stripped down to the barest bones of Keith Richards' life.
The main focus of the book is Keith as Rolling Stone -- his childhood is handled in relatively few pages, and the book kicks in as he meets Mick Jagger for the first time. From there it follows Richards from a rather stormy middle-class youth to life as one of the biggest rock stars in the world. And, additionally, into the depths of addiction and self-destruction, and how he managed to crawl out before it could kill him.
But the problem is that Booth seems to be getting a bit TOO respectful of Richards, and doesn't dip more than a toe into Richards' personal life. His destructive, loving, dynamic relationship with Anita Pallenberg is put on the sidelines, as is his marriage to Patti Hansen and the death of his third child. The poor kid doesn't merit more than one sentence, despite the devastation it caused his parents.
The problem is, the stay-out-of-personal-lives approach does not work in the biography of an artist -- several songs were written about events in Richards' life. For example, Booth doesn't bother to note that Linda Keith was anything other than Richards' girlfriend du jour, but he apparently wrote "Ruby Tuesday" about her and considered her his first love. His music and personal life can't be easily separated.
That hands-off approach ruins most of the book -- while it has some interesting anecdotes, like the first tape of "Satisfaction" ever made, it feels as though Booth is just showing us a few pieces of the jigsaw puzzle. Where is the rest? He never tells us, only gives us a few tantalizing glimpses and not a great deal more.
What is more, Booth displays a rather boring writing style here. Richards' life has been a colorful and sometimes explosive one, but it sounds positively dull here -- the most exciting parts of the whole book are when Richards himself is being quoted. Those anecdotes make the book come alive in places.
Stanley Booth's business-only approach to Keith Richards causes a major stumble in what could have been a really good book. But the end result is very, very dull.
ah, stanley stanley stanley ... !.......2004-02-12
As someone who's had a very high-calibre Thing for Keith all my conscious life - and who's been praising Stanley Booth to the skies ever since I first got ahold of his "True Adventures of the Rolling Stones" - all I can say is: Stanley honey, I feel really bad for you! You sound so bitter and downhearted in this book, and that comes through stronger than your resonance with your subject, and stronger than your talent.
I know being ripped off & cannibalized hurts. But you know you can do way way better than this, and you know Keith deserves way better than this. And even if you don't know it, Keith's and your (yes your!) loyal admirers deserve better too.
Two of the stars are for the handful of new quotes and vignettes you put in this work for us to cherish. The other two are to encourage you to write the thing the way you know you can. You wrote the best book ever about the Stones. This book reads like the start of a rough outline of the best book ever about Keith - and that's the book I'm waiting for.
Keith's Life.......2004-02-06
Stanley Booth's biography of Keith Richards is a pretty good book. It is well researched, it's well written, and it says a lot about Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones. One of the things that make particularly interesting (for those who are interested in Keith Richards anyway)is that Booth knows Keith personally and some of Keith's quotes are taken from personal conversations.
However, the book like many other biographies of Keith and the Stones does not pay much attention to what is really important about Richards--that is, he is one of the greatest rock composers and one of the great music composers of the century.
He wrote, either by himself of with Jagger, some 500 songs. Several of which have defined the terms, the syntax and the grammar of rock.
Yet, biographers pay little if any attention to this simple and quite remarkable fact. I have never read any serious, detailed account of Keith's style. He's the riff master, yes, but what does that mean? Keith often said that he's a juggler rather than a musician. Because he claims that all is doing is playing around with the same notes. Great. But has anybody paid any attention to this? That is to how certain musical patterns emerge from Keith's compositions? To how these patterns have generated various rock classics over the years? To how Keith's use of the open tuning has influenced the way he writes his songs?
My impression is that this biography of Keith, like several others, focus more on the superficial features of Keith's persona and much less on what's really relevant: Keith's music . It's really a pity.
Keith Is Rock.......2001-05-07
Stanley Booth is overqualified, to say the very least, to write this biography of Keith Richards, the muscle behind the music of the Rolling Stones; having toured with the band in 1969, he chronicled the events leading up to their December, 1969 brush with darkness at Altamont. His focus here is not on the whole band, but on the Keith himself, the Human Riff, "the world's blackest white man" and the creator of such rock classics as "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Happy." This book draws heavily from previously published material - that's a drawback; however, said material is superior in almost every respect to just about anything else you'll find about the place, concerning rock music, American culture, sex, drugs, religion, and politics. Booth, a Southern boy, obviously loves how this Englishman took to his own heart the Mississippi Delta blues of black American musicians, and made it into something...else. Booth is not incapable of being critical towards his subject; he is unsparing in his criticisms of Keith's bull-in-a-china-shop lifestyle, his drug addictions and self-denial concerning his addiction problems, but mostly, this book celebrates the life, music, and adventures of the greatest living symbol of rock's defiant spirit.
not bad, not good enough........2000-03-25
Stanley Booth bases his capability of writing keith richards' life on the fact that he 'lived in social intercourse with him'. although he manages to create few moments of intimacy, his book is more like a glance on the stones career through richards' eyes, rather than a true biography of keith. if you like to read the story of the stones, you would find Booth's previous book - 'the true adventures of the stones' - more complete. if you are interested in keith's biography, Victor bockris' book ( 'keith richards - the biography') is more focused. most of 'standing in the shadows' is based on conversations with keith. when not recycled, some of the quotes are valuable for those who, like me, find keith richards interesting.
