Book Description

In a parking garage in the center of Rio de Janeiro, corporate executive Ricardo Carvalho is found dead in his car, a bullet in his head, his wallet and briefcase missing. Inspector Espinosa is called in to investigate the apparent robbery and murder, but the world-weary Espinosa knows that things are not always as they seem. Carvalho's recently acquired one-million-dollar life insurance policy and the subsequent disappearance of his secretary Rose complicate matters-as does Espinosa's attraction to Carvalho's beautiful widow, one of the suspects. And when two more people turn up dead, Espinosa must speed up his investigation before anyone else becomes a casualty.

1 out of 5 stars What Silence? What Rain?.......2007-09-02

Initially, I was intrigued by the poetic title of this novel by Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza: "The Silence of the Rain."
It began quite promisingly, but by the second "book",things had already begun to slow down. The switching from third person to first person narrative and back seemed more a whim than a solid structural device, and I found it baffling. (Who IS telling this story?) Also, while I like cerebral detectives, Espinosa, once he begins talking, even if it's only to himself, never shuts up, and his conjectural scenarios and other ramblings slow the plot. Worse, he doesn't really solve anything. And still worse: if we are ever given the hint of believeable motive for any of the deeds committed, this reader missed it. Because the characters never became "real," their actions didn't make sense. There were simply too many "whys" left unanswered. Because if you don't have character development in a mystery, you don't have answers.
As for the ending--it accomplished nothing except to make the entire story seem like a bad joke--the author having one off on the reader. In that respect, the "poetic" title was also a cheat.

1 out of 5 stars OK novel ruined by a really bad ending.......2007-04-12

i would have given this book three stars but it's hard to believe the author or editors would allow the book to end the way it does. It's especially annoying becuase the author spends the last 75 pages getting the reader ready for a climactic ending but instead, he apparently couldn't come up with anything even remotely interesting and chooses an easy and stupid way out. anyone with any appreciation of gender issues will be annoyed or worse at the stupid end of this book. additionally, the tone of the whole novel is somewhat slow and detached, like the main character.

3 out of 5 stars Liked the setting, hated the ending.......2006-08-02

Inspector Espinosa has a strange case on his hands. An executive, found dead in his car, is the victim of an apparent murder and possibly a robbery since victim's briefcase and wallet are missing. The other possibility is an insurance scam. Three women are involved and Espinosa takes a personal interest in two of them; the wealthy widow and the victim's girlfriend. As more people die, Espinosa is determined to unravel the threads of this complicated case.

I'll admit having had a problem getting into this. It was interesting, but I just didn't feel that involved in the story. Then, about a third of the way through, the author changes POV from third to first person and I was captivated. Because I read for character, it took that change for me to see the appeal of Espinosa and really care what happened to the characters and the case. When the author switches back to third person toward the end, I was so involved in the story, it didn't matter. I understood why Garcia-Ruiz wrote the book as he did, and I am very glad I stayed with it. For me, the strength of the book was that the book was set somewhere unfamiliar to me. But the weakness was that, in spite of the author's best efforts, I did identify the killer fairly early and I really hated the ending.

1 out of 5 stars What a way to die!.......2006-06-13

This book is dreadful. I bought it because I'm a fan of detectives from around the world. But Garcia-Roza switches from third-person, to first person, and back again. Why does he do it? Because he couldn't figure out how to plot the book around Inspector Espinoza's own discoveries. That's because during the entire book, the detective doesn't really find anything out at all. It all gets wrapped up through no fault of his own... The worse part, however, is the scene where a beautiful young woman finds herself handcuffed to a bed with a bad guy and decides that the only way to get out of her tricky situation is to have sex with the villain until the excitement kills him. Which it does. But not until the beautiful girl has really enjoyed the sex, though she hates herself for it. Maybe that could happen in Rio, after all it's the land of the string bikini, but I doubt it very much. Absolute nonsense.

4 out of 5 stars somewhat over rated mystery.......2006-04-03

I really wanted to like this book --it starts out very promising --and I thought maybe I have anothe Henning Mankell type series to work my way through --but alas, and as some of the other reviewers indicated, this book is quite flawed (my number #1 question is why no one has a cell phone to advance the plot and the many situations calling for communciations between Espinosa and the other characters ) but there are so many flaws in the plot and it does become fairly obvious at one point as to who the culprit is ...but there is a kind of an awkward, slightly askew rhythm to the story that kept me from putting it down ( I guess I just like detective stories/police procedurals that take place on foreign soil.

S.J. Rozan's reputation grows with every new installment in her lively series starring the redoubtable Lydia Chin, a twentysomething New York PI and her partner Bill Smith. Here Lydia's venerable family friend Grandfather Gao dispatches the twosome to Hong Kong to deliver a jade amulet to the grandson of Wei Yao-Shi, whose American family knew nothing of the son and heir he left in Asia. A simple assignment quickly turns into a kidnapping, as Chin and Smith make their way through the complex world of triad politics, Asian intrigue, and the smuggling of Chinese antiquities. Along the way, Rozan treats us to an insider's view of Hong Kong; if someone you know is headed in that direction, this would be a great guidebook as well as a diverting plane read.

The relationship between the two protagonists has a nice subtext; there's sufficient sexual tension to spice up the narrative, but not enough to slow down the action. Rozan excels at pacing, and her characters are complex enough to linger in the reader's mind after the last page is turned. This is a standout performance from a writer who ought to break out in the bestseller ranks with this eighth in a series that keeps getting better. --Jane Adams

    Book Description

Hailed by Booklist as "a major figure in contemporary mystery fiction," Anthony and Shamus Award-winner S.J. Rozan-the only woman besides Sue Grafton to win the Shamus for Best Novel-continues to win universal acclaim for her Bill Smith/Lydia Chin series. And now the celebrated master of mystery turns her keen eye to the bustling, crowded streets of Hong Kong, where nothing is as it seems....It's a great honor when Grandfather Gao, a family friend and elder in New York's Chinatown community, asks Lydia Chin and her partner Bill Smith to go to Hong Kong to deliver the ashes of an old friend for burial, a letter from that friend to his brother, and a valuable jade figurine for the friend's seven-year-old grandson. But why would Grandfather Gao choose a PI, much less two, for such a simple mission? Lydia and Bill have even more questions when they arrive in Hong Kong and find the son's apartment ransacked-and the grandson missing. When two separate ransom demands are issued and the family tries to freeze them out, Lydia and Bill must try to solve a puzzle that seems to bear the unmistakable stamp of the Triads as they soon find themselves thrust headlong into the Hong Kong underworld where death is a way of life....AUTHORBIO: S.J. ROZAN is the author of six previous novels featuring Bill Smith and Lydia Chin. She has won both the Anthony Award for Best Novel and the Shamus Award for Best Novel (the only other woman besides Sue Grafton to win the Shamus), and has been nominated for the Edgar Award. An architect, she was born, raised, and lives in New York City.

4 out of 5 stars Split the difference.......2006-07-10

This Rozan book seems to have split readers between really liking it and disappointment, so I'll walk a line between them. First, anything Rozan writes is worthy of reading because she is a master of modern commercial fiction and prose, in league with James Lee Burke and Dennis Lehane. And like Lehane, she has created a modern man/woman team of private detectives that draws from the rich legacy of such novels while chartering new ground.

My complaints are two: first, the plot is a bit convoluted and shaky, and its conclusion is offered up to them rather than discovered by them. I want the detectives to be the discoverers, not receptors, of the truth.

Second, while I appreciate Rozan switching to Lydia Chin's POV, I feel she is stronger from Bill Smith's POV. At times she paints Chin as quite insecure and bordering on inept, which didn't jibe with the Chin I see from Smith's POV. Now granted, that might be Rozan's point, that we all have a POV and Smith's is off when it comes to Chin. I also thought Rozan minimized Smith's role in this book in order to give us more of Chin.

Beyond all that, Rozan does a great job of giving us the setting of Hong Kong without hitting us over the head, as some authors do. Hong Kong becomes part of the story, not only in the present but in its past, its traditions, its cultural heritage.

Bottom line? Read it if you enjoy prose and literacy. And check out the others in this series, too.

3 out of 5 stars this book is ok.......2005-07-23

I am a pretty tough critic most of the time, mainly because I expect perfection from authors. I know that this book has gotten pretty darn good reviews and I am kind of buckling the trend here with a three star review. This book does have several flashes of brilliance and Rozen does manage to pull off some neat plot tricks. But in the end here this is a very confusing story. I know that over and over again the characters talk about how it is very Chinese to have inexplicable occurrences and motives. But it is frustrating when as a reader you can look back over the plot of the story and poke huge holes in the plot. Perhaps even more frustrating is that in order for the plot to unfold the way it did would require very extreme circumstances of the most improbable order to occur not just once but dozens of times. In my book Lydia Chin was not being a detective here but was instead being dragged along through silly coincidence.

Perhaps my assessment here is a little harsh. I think that I am a little overly peeved because parts of this book are so great. I was bowled over at the very beginning, where the kidnapping is first unveiled. When I got to the end of this scene I thought about all of the possible scenarios that might unfold ala Agatha Christie and was delighted that I found myself loosing track of them. It was like Rozen had taken a complete Backgammon set and had thrown the pieces onto the floor. Every piece thus representing possible suspects motives, and only waiting to be uncovered by Chin's logical reasoning. Only the book did not really work out that way.

I might recommend the #1 Ladies Detective Agency series, the Patricia Cornwell books starting from the first, or Tony Hillerman's books (also good to start with the first books here) in lieu of Reflecting the Sky. Obviously others disagree with me. This is not a bad book, but it is not a masterpiece either.

3 out of 5 stars I like the Bill Smith narrated novels best. This is a Lydia........2003-11-07

The first time I read a Rozan book, it was a Lydia Chin narrated book. I didn't like it at all. The second time, I read a Bill Smith narrated book and I couldn't believe that it was the same author. Now I've read another Lydia Chin and I'm kind of back to finding it only so-so.

The Hong Kong part of the book is interesting, and the plot isn't bad as such, but so much of the book depends on Chin's inner life and I just don't find it that interesting. Accordingly, I never really managed to engage the book or really care about what happened.

Back to Bill Smith for me.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting travelogue, shame about the plot.......2003-09-09

Not one of Smith and Chin's better adventures. I think the author may have got caught up on the excitement of visiting HK and spent more time detailing the stereotypical attitudes the outside world has of Planet HK, of which I am resident.

Basically, upon the death of a relative, Lydia Chin and Bill Smith visit HK to personally deliver several items as a favour to an elder family member. Upon arrival, they quickly become involved in a triad kidnapping, the hunt and the relatively innocuous resolution. The story is thin, weak and void of any real serious reader excitement.

As mentioned, the author spends far too much space on describing the environment of Hong Kong and leaves no 'urban myth' unturned. Contrary to author belief, tea is not drank to the extent she would have us believe, people do not yell 'wai!' at the top of their voices into their mobile phones everytime they are answered, the sun does not set to the south behind the Peak (as in the rest of the world, it sets in the west), there is no elevated walkway linking the Furama Hotel to other buildings (indeed, and which would be unbeknownst to the author, there is now no Furama Hotel - having been knocked down in 2002 to make way for greater commercial interests) and people will not chastize you for walking too slow in the street.

For a guide to HK, read Fodor's. For top notch Rozan, read 'Winter and Night.'

    5 out of 5 stars Always a good read............2003-05-18

My only complaint about this author is that she doesn't write fast enough! When you find a mystery writer whose books actually make you struggle to read slower because you know you're going to be fidgiting in the gap until you have a new one to read, they're just plain GOOD...no need to get more scientific than that. The team of Lydia Chin and Bill Smith are great fun and are truly unique to the genre, and "Reflecting the Sky" compels me to come back and give it two thumbs up. This engaging (and clearly wonderfully researched) tale of two culture-clashing New York PIs cleverly weaving their way through the societal complexities of modern Hong Kong to unravel a family's intercontinental secrets will make mystery fans realize how much potential this genre actually has. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating story of souls brought back to live again.......2007-06-19

I just finished this novel tonight. It's not my favorite Sullivan novel (that would be THE PHASES OF HARRY MOON), but it's my favorite with a horror orientation.

Thomas Sullivan shows enormous range, from domestic-scale impressions of the raw feelings in hurtful and loving human relationships, to evocations of the other side of death, with all its cosmic horror and mystery. This story is as unique and fascinating an account of reclamation of the dead as I've yet encountered -- there are more than enough seriously bone-chilling passages, written with more than journeyman-like flair -- Sully is truly one of the masters, and he graces our genre when he writes on these themes. The ways that people hold power over each other, the ways we bargain for love, the ways we wish we can make people feel what we want them to feel - it's all here, and much more. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars The dreaded red dust........2006-07-08

"Dust of Eden" is about old, bitter Arial Leppa who gets hold of some of the dust of creation (from the Garden of Eden) and begins using it as paint to re-create her old aqiantences (notice I did not say friends) and makes them subservient in her house where she rules life and death with an iron fist and cruel vengence.

It is a good idea, but it is done so slowly and with such broad strokes that it is hard to get into. It was hard to finish, and I put the book down several times. All the characters are dour and depressing based on their situation. The monsters that are created with the magic red dust/paint are Lovecraftian, but not perticularly inspired in the long run. The only bright spot is Denny Bryce who put his father in the care of Arial, not knowing she was insane with a God complex. I heard that this is a good book, so maybe it is just me, but it was just too slow and depressing for me.

5 out of 5 stars What if You Could Change The World?.......2005-12-20

"Dust of Eden" is a novel written on a great number of levels. For your average horror fan, there is the main story, winding its way from the desert outside Baghdad to the small assisted living community of New Eden, to the garden that first bore that name, and on to the conclusion. There are no slow moments in Sullivan's prose. The plot is as winding and sinuous as the serpent that inhabits it, and the characters come to life along the way, each in his or her own time and depth, but the curves are more like whip-cracks, flicking the reader forward in roller-coaster fashion, than they are impediments.
Still, to be drawn into the quick moving plot and stop there would not do this work justice. There are deeper relationships binding certain of the characters. There are moral and philosophical questions littering the pages and demanding at least passing attention.
There is a crater full of red dust in the desert. A small, very secret circle of men guards it to the death, as it has been since time out of mind. One man discovers that red bowl of sand by accident, and acts as men throughout history have acted. First he is curious, then he covets, and at last, when he as taken the object of his desire, he contemplates it, regrets his actions, and seeks redemption.
Though on the surface this is a novel of coincidences, beneath that is the thread of destiny. Do things happen because they happen, or is there a greater intelligence behind it? Is that intelligence malevolent, or benign? Loving, or manipulating? If that intelligence is, in fact, modeled after Man, as most organized religions would portray it, will it act in accordance with that similarity, or is there something greater and meaningful behind it all?
In "Dust of Eden," some of the sand of creation -- whether it is the stuff of which Eden was made, or the dust that it became at its destruction, is not clear - is stolen. Most of what is stolen is reclaimed, presumably by the guardians from whom it was taken, but one vessel is mailed off America disguised as the ashes of a man who died while stealing it.
The ashes end up sitting around forgotten, until the night that Ariel, an artist, remembers them on the night she has chosen to end her life. When she mixes the sand of Creation with her paints, everything changes - for her, anyway, and what follows is, I believe, a pretty accurate portrayal of Man (or Woman) as creator - how the human mind might react to ultimate power, how small the focus of their ambition could be, and how petty their handling of unthinkable control over others.
And Ariel has a daughter. Her daughter died in her forties, wheelchair bound after a rock climbing accident. Amber has returned, with the painting of her portrait, and from the daughter we get reflections of the mother, and the father, and another perspective on Creation.
Tied in with all of this, we have Martin and Denny Bryce. Martin is suffering the dementia of old age, forgetting almost daily what he has been told the day before, and the day before that. His son, Denny, loves him very much, but his own ability to provide a safe environment for his father is eroding with time, much like the older Bryce's mind. When he discovers New Eden, and bullies his father into Ariel's care, a new dynamic is introduced, and along with it a poignant portrait of the relationship between father and son, the dreams and memories that haunt the one, and the desperate efforts of the other to preserve the man who gave him life.
"The Dust of Eden" is not an easily classifiable work. The genres are, in and of themselves, not wide or forgiving enough to pigeonhole it, but the prose is powerful enough to span the borders. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A GEM WITH MANY FACETS.......2004-05-19

I read this book because it had so many different summaries that I thought there must be a lot to it. There is. I don't suppose my summary is going to catch it all either but here goes. A soldier of fortune who abandons his family in WWII flies a surplus helicopter for tourists and oil riggers about the time of the revolution in Iraq. He stumbles on a patch of sacred sand guarded by fanatics. When he is killed in a firefight, his partner sends his ashes, indistinguishable from the red sand, to his daughter in the States. Half a century later, the daughter (Ariel Leppa) is an old eccentric painter who still lives in the family's farmhouse, which has tunnels left over from Indian wars and the booze-running days of Prohibition. All this sets the scene for the dramatic night of Ariel's suicide attempt.

She has led an unhappy life as a second-hand Rose, and now her "friends" are dead and her daughter is crippled from a climbing accident. In a symbolic act she mixes the ashes of the father who abandoned her into a final painting of her daughter as she was at age 9. The daughter (Amber) comes to life. Ariel then brings back the whole gallery of people who underestimated her and makes the farmhouse a literal assisted-living facility where she controls life and death and health and everything else. This builds through each of her relationships, including her former husband, her boss and the man she really loved who jilted her. A high school teacher who doesn't want to warehouse his Alzheimer father (Martin) in the usual facilities becomes convinced the informal farmhouse community will work for his reclusive father and manipulates his way in by insinuating that he will draw attention to the facility.

Things go horribly wrong when Amber steals the red paint and hides it in a cupola on the roof where she begins to make her own amateurish renderings. Her child's imagination brings unholy things to life -- a scarecrow, a dog, birds, vermin to punish people she doesn't like. The fields and the old tunnels become infested and the farmhouse comes under siege. Mother and daughter are at war using the devices of their mismatched powers. The mother uses subtle, insidious weapons -- an old pet brought back, a second child companion exactly like Amber but threatened with extinction if she doesn't get the paint returned. The daughter creates overt monsters. Played against this are a half dozen other dramas: illusory and impossible love affairs, revenge, vanity, Martin's haunted past and his mistaking Amber for his own dead daughter. There is pathos and heroism in the final resolutions and an ending that could be an ending or not. Given the power that is unleashed in this story, there is nothing that isn't redeemable so long as the power still exists. Fans may clamor for a sequel of this one.

What doesn't come through in this plot summary is the writing skill. Sullivan's style is certainly among the best.

5 out of 5 stars thumbs up on this one.......2004-05-18

It just came out and I read it in two days. I usually read a book a week, mostly mystery, science fiction or horror. I'm not exactly sure which category to put Dust of Eden. It's just a good thriller with a lot of fantasy and solid characters. Very real feeling for such a bizarre setting and story. I think any reader would like this.

Written by one of the world's leading experts in gastroenterology, this revised and up-to-date edition of Your Gut Feelings focuses on the most common problems of the lower intestinal tract--the bowel or "gut"--offering new ways of coping with them and reliable approaches to prevention. In clear language, free of medical jargon, Dr. Janowitz describes the most advanced methods and instruments used in the treatment of the human colon and intestinal problems--including the newest research on diagnosis testing, medication, and surgical treatments--and outlines the risks they carry. He also explains how to determine whether to treat such day-to-day problems as gas, "belly-ache," diarrhea, and constipation at home or to bring them to a doctor's attention. Covering a wide range of current colonic and intestinal disorders from the most common, irritable bowel syndrome (often known as spastic colon), through the more serious complaints such as colon cancer and sexually transmitted disorders, Dr. Janowitz provides basic information on the symptoms and causes of each problem. With clear and useful diagrams, photographs, charts, and tables, this indispensable handbook is must reading for anyone who has ever been afflicted problems of the intestine.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource.......2000-07-01

Janowitz provides a good resource with this book, which provides an overview of possible conditions that affect the lower intestinal tract. This book is not just for someone with a chronic condition, although irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticulitis are covered. Janowitz also has excellent chapters on coping with the occasional food poisoning episode or traveler's diarrhea. His overview of the functioning of the intestinal tract is one the best I've come across in all my resources. As with most intestinal subjects, Janowitz doesn't have a lot of answers - more coping information - but he does seek to present diet and medical therapies for each condition. He does not spend enough time on alternative therapies or the various nutritional concerns that accompany lower GI problems. A good read and possibly a purchase if you suffer from one or more of the problems outlined.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know what's wrong? This book helps find answers!.......1998-01-27

I have been researching for answers to my personal intestinal problems for 4 years. This is one of my best resources. Easily understood. Everytime I go back to it, I learn something new. Helps fill in the blanks that the doctors don't explain aswell as give reasons for questions to ask your Doctor.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Understandable Guide.......1997-07-04

I use this book often, since like many Crohn's sufferers, I also deal with a broad spectrum of intestinal problems. In very clear and understandable language, Dr. Janowitz, a GI at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, and the author of Indigestion and Good Foods for Bad Stomachs provides information on the symptoms and causes of an array of intestinal problems, including IBS, Crohn's & UC, diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, colon cancer, food allergies, intestinal gas and more. He describes the latest tests and procedures (ie. colonoscopies, barium x-rays), medications, and surgical treatments and the risks each carry. This is one of my most used reference books on IBD and other problems, probably because he provides a lot of medical wisdom mixed with good common sense. On Thrive@Health's list of recommended reading for IBD

            Book Description

The maximum flavor and minimum fuss of high-heat cooking can now be yours year-round, whether outdoors on the grill or indoors in your oven.

Powerhouse chef Waldy Malouf of Beacon Restaurant in New York City and Stamford, Connecticut, likes to play with fire. Roasting and grilling have become his signature, and High Heat heralds the arrival of this brilliant approach for home cooks. Featuring 125 savory recipes adaptable for both open-flame grilling and hot-oven cooking, High Heat is the first cookbook to offer home cooks this kind of flexibility. In fact, most of the recipes, which are fast and easy to follow, include simple variations for both kinds of cooking so that you can enjoy your favorite flavors whatever the weather or time of year. Both oven roasting and open-flame grilling rely on high heat to bring out the most delicious and fundamental flavors of any food—caramelizing the natural sugars and turning the foods golden brown.
The recipes in High Heat are designed for the home cook—no long ingredient lists or all-day preparations required. Even so, you will discover a rich range of imaginative combinations from the home kitchen of a gourmet chef—Flank Steak with Rosemary and Roasted Garlic, Loin of Pork with Apples and Bitter Chocolate, Crisp Spicy Chicken Wings, Whole Red Snapper with Baby Fennel and Niçoise Olives—all tailored for indoor or outdoor perfection. Breads (Grilled Bruschetta with Toppings, Thin-Crust Pizza with Asparagus and Prosciutto), soups (Charred Yellow Tomato Soup, Caramelized Cauliflower Soup), salads (Arugula Salad with Crisp Fingerling Potato Chips, Sweet Tomato and Bocconcini Salad with Scallions), vegetables (Smoky Corn Succotash, Mediterranean Stuffed Zucchini with Cilantro-Yogurt Sauce), and even desserts (Nectarine and Almond Crostadas, Chocolate Angel Food Cake with Roasted Brandied Strawberries and Chocolate Sauce) find a home in the range or on the grill.
A father himself, Malouf has chosen recipes that will appeal to the whole family. The use of just a few ingredients and basic cooking techniques make these dishes easy to prepare for weeknights as well as special occasions. High-heat cooking is both quick and healthy, intensifying flavors without requiring additional fat or calories. So turn up the heat and prepare a knockout meal in your oven or on your grill.

            4 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2007-02-06

Outstanding recipes. Quite straightforward but full of flavor. My family has three big men (heavy weight wrestlers) and these guys appreciate good food. This cookbook delivers. Practical, do-able, reasonable amount of time. Can't ask for much more.

5 out of 5 stars My New favorite Grilling Book!.......2003-07-06

This book is great. I own several grilling books and am always sad when winter comes (I live in the Northeast) and I have to put them away when I cover up the grill. But not this year! Waldy Malouf's book will take me into winter because all the recipes work in the oven as well as on the grill. So it's like getting two for one.

To be totally honest I shouldn't give this book 5 stars yet because I've only used the grilling recipes, but everything I've tried has been fantastic, and better, is EASY. The balsamic chicken is amazing, and the lamb with olives my new favorite party entree and the tuna came out perfectly, covered in this herb oil and very moist. It's a terrific book and I hope he writes another one soon.

            4 out of 5 stars A good starting point........2004-04-30

This book is a good starting point for collectors. With information on vintage dolls and even some newer dolls too. This book explains How to use the price guide, since most dolls found are not truly mint or mint in the box. It also has lots of color photographs, to make identification of a doll easy. The layout of this book is nice too, there are different sections for dolls, outfits, cases and so on. Dolls are listed by year, making a particular Barbie or Friend fairly easy to find.
This book is not as in depth as some other Barbie doll books on the market, you will not be able to find specific markings for each doll as well as a complete list of accessories - exactly what booklet, shoes, wrist tag, box (and so on) each doll came with. Also some of the photographs are fairly small, but that said, this is still a good book.
I would also like to add that this book features many foreign dolls and accessories, Not sold in the US. (Lot's of Barbie stuff that were exclusive to Canadian and European, as well as other markets.)

There's not a lot of printed information in this book, it's mostly pictures, but I absolutely LOVE this book. The pictures are great, & they come in handy if you need something to refer to, say for auction information (buying or selling). I highly recommend this book if it's pictures of vintage items you're after, you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Good Rules for Specific Styling.......2005-09-14

I was looking for some basic good advice for smart, clean interior design aesthetics...this book met those standards in a beautiful and sensitively assembled book. My only criticism is that the styling that Kelly shows is a high design with contemporary attributes - not very relevant to many other kinds of decorating challenges. I have an early 1900s home with standard ceilings, wood trim and smallish rooms - not very similar at all to Kelly's gorgeous and mostly spacious examples. I will have to work a little harder to envision the golden rules being applied to my humble abode.

              3 out of 5 stars A bit pretentious..........2005-02-17

I realize this may not be the most helpful, or relevant of comments but... I was actually quite bothered by the tone of this author's writing. She is, in my opinion, elitist and arrogant. With comments such as "many people try to immitate me, unsuccessfully" or statements to the tune of "I'm more skilled in this than most", I had to devote a lot of energy to focusing on the message, and not the messenger.

And speaking of the message, I was drawn to this book because this style really resonates with me. I realize that most of the photographs inside the book demonstrate composition, and not necessarily the way you would find somebody's livingroom arranged on a Thursday morning after they've left for work, but I believe that, although seeing realistically decorated interiors is important to some, personally, I prefer to see design that is devoid of the truly personal touches that we should all be responsible for ourselves. After all, I don't need inspiration to figure out where to place my coffee or newspaper every morning.

              5 out of 5 stars Minimalist Chic.......2004-11-19

I found the photographs in this book to be beautifully presented. It is a minimalist's dream book, clean lines, nothing over done, with rooms full of texture, beauty, and elegance. Nothing overstated, like a fine aged wine, or great architecture. The author, Kelly Hoppen, offers refined elegance, no kitsch.

1 out of 5 stars perfect show house no longer matters.......2004-11-13

In the introduction (pg.6) Ms. Hoppen notes, that after 11 September..."a perfect show house no longer mattered. Having a home that really was a home that really was a home did." So I wonder why all the really gorgeous photographs in this book really do not demostrate that people actually live in these homes. The rooms are devoid of individual personality and really do appear to be perfect show rooms. Personal artifacts are removed from the photographs, replaced with props and items that are fabricated for Ms. Hoppen and for sale on links on her web sites or by the vendors listed in the "Address Book" section of her book (read product placement). With that said there are a worthwhile morsels in this book and the photographs are wonderful, especially if you are looking for interesting and minimal examples of door and window trim, floral arrangement ideas, or you are designing a spiral staircase. The text portion of the book is very useful for the design process of building a home and the photographs seem to be blue prints come to life, but without any sentimental indications of the lives of the people who might be moving into these homes. The window treatment section should be licenced by Smith and Noble and used in their catelog.

Now, here is the first book to provide a comprehensive and detailed look at the process involved in creating a successful graphic novel.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to start with.......2007-06-10

Creating a graphic novel (or a comic book) is hard work. Getting someone to read it, other than friends or relatives, is an herculean task. This book is a good place to start, along with some fine books written by Scott McCloud.

I gave it only four stars because of the shallow treatment of so many themes, but that's natural, because of the wide spectrum of subjets that the comic form implies. And I sustracted a star because the writing style... well, tries too hard to be funny, and it gets annoying at times (insert a joke here!- Ed.)

                5 out of 5 stars A good beginning........2007-03-25

Very well thought out and organized presentatation. It guides the artisist/novelist to-be effortlessly through every phase of graphic novel creation.
I truely enjoyed it and thought it was easy to understand even for those who are not familiar with comic book or printhouse jargon.
I highly recommend this guide as one of the best I have seen.

4 out of 5 stars Helps My Students Develop Their Writing.......2007-01-05

Graphic novels seem to be quite the hot ticket. While most traditional English teachers would scoff at this genre as a serious direction for students, I find my at-risk pupils captivated by the entire process. Graphic novels help me keep their focus...I don't have them read too many, but I try to get them to write for me in graphic novel form. Some of them are unbelievably gifted, and I want them to see this as a viable avenue for themselves. I have a group of 4-5 who fight over this book regularly.

5 out of 5 stars far from idiotic.......2006-08-01

I'm a long-time designer looking to do a web comic on the side and I picked this book up only partly because I was open to some new organizational ideas, but mostly because the gentleman writing it were so down to earth.

Their teaching method is very engaging, the advice very helpful and easy to understand, but what I found most helpful was the "you can do it" reassuring undertone it had.

I'm also a longtime attendee of comicon and found their "demostration purpose" con comic exerpt amusing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to express themselves through graphic novels. It's practical, filled with good advice and a ton of helpful references you might want to look up later as well.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful hand from heaven!!!.......2004-07-20

When i saw this title was about to be released I didn't believe it at first... But anyway... I put it on my wish list, before you can say ?idiot?

Not because of the popularity of graphic novels but because I thought that a series of books like this "Complete Idiot's Guide" usually cares about, raising puppies, understanding software or mechanics stuff... You know... Things that might be more appealing to the real world... To the average reader

But to dedicate a whole guide just to the creators or fans of graphic novels... Ummm, I don?t know... Sounds weird... But immensely cool at the same time!!!

Anyway, I bought it, I have it, I read it, I LOVE IT!

As comic creator, writer and graphic novel lover THIS IS A MUST HAVE!... But specially for those writers and art students beginners or expert... Is full of tips and great ideas, all written in a simple down to earth words

As an expert you will find a different point of view, which I think is always helpful, as I never get tired of seeing other peoples works.. And as I believe there?s always something new to learn... In every book... Without exception

Specially coming for this guys, Nat Gertler and Steve Leiber... They not only explain but sparks your imagination with a wonderful sense of humor and tons of creative examples... You will find yourself not only laughing in every page but feeling those creative butterflies in your stomach, while you feel you are ?talking? with people that understand your ideas, love and passion for writing and creating a graphic novel

This is a book that goes directly to the subject... Directly to the thing you want the most... LEARN FROM THE PRO?S

So... I recommend this one with my eyes closed, not only if you are an idiot, but if you believe that there?s always something new to learn...

Get this one if you write graphic novel, if you love graphic novel, if you only read graphic novel, or if you only want to be... Less idiot... Like me
