The best letters are the ones that tell you everything. Not just the big, important stuff, but the little details of life. The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters is a one-sided epistolary novel. We get to read all the letters written by Olivia Hunt, erstwhile film producer, over the year she learns her sister Maddie has cancer. Olivia scuttles between her hometown in Ohio, where Maddie still lives, and Los Angeles, where she's trying to get a film version of Don Quixote off the ground. Along the way, she writes newsy letters to her best friend Tina, crabby mash notes to her ex-boyfriend Michael, worried missives to her parents, breezy memos to (real-life) entertainment honchos, and cheery entertainments to Maddie herself. These epistles are crammed full of the asides and rambling descriptions that make for good letters, and good books. She writes, for instance, "I went down to the cafeteria. Judy, the cashier, told me her daughter passed the Bar exam, so that was nice to hear. She said I looked tired. I ate some iceberg lettuce with orange dressing in the empty cafeteria. And two chocolate chip cookies." It's not poetry, but the orange dressing and the chatty cashier go a long way toward capturing hospital life. It also helps that first-time author Elisabeth Robinson is a producer and screenwriter who worked on Braveheart (among others); she's just as detailed and knowing when she describes the seemingly Herculean task of producing a film. She includes gentle send-ups of Robin Williams and John Cleese, who star in the fictional picture, and terrifying glimpses of executive tantrums. (A Hollywood background has its downsides: the book occasionally strays into formula.) In the end, Robinson's hard work with all those details ultimately results in a believable, lovable heroine. --Claire Dederer

Olivia Hunt is unemployed, living alone in a dump, and working on the fourth draft of her suicide note when she gets a phone call that lets her know what real trouble is. Maddie Hunt is her younger sister, the annoyingly happy one who married the hometown guy while Olivia set out to conquer Hollywood, ha ha. And Maddie is in trouble. Pulled home for the first time in years, Olivia gets a painful dose of real life as she tries to help her sister, keep her parents from running off the rails, and reconnect with the boyfriend who left without a word but might still be the love of her life. And, of course, the movie she's been trying to put in front of cameras for years heats up just as she leaves town. Racing between Hollywood, hospital rooms, and film sets in Spain, Olivia has to do the impossible at work and at home-and learns that love will let her do no less. By turns charming, disarming, heartrending, and hilarious, this is a novel for anyone who has ever loved a sister (or a great story).

The book contained so much ranting. Does not keep you involved in the story. What a waste.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not GREAT........2007-06-05

"The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters," is a book in letters with a great story line. It begins with the idea that the protagonist, Olivia, was planning on commiting suicide until she discovers her sister is ill-with lukemia.
The book started off okay...as it progressed towards the middle it became pretty good. Some of it was unbelievable (especially the beg. suicide part). I think the book lacked a little bit of emotion unless that is just the way Oilivia was.
The adventures was good enough to finish but i could put it down a few times.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and informative.......2007-05-15

I found the description of her sister's experience with cancer very eye-opening as someone who's never had someone close to them go through it. It told me a lot but in a very enjoyable fashion. I was annoyed by all the reviews in the front cover that talk about what a great hollywood book it is, when I found it more of a book that talks about coping with illness, but in an engaging and light way. I also found the back cover description misleading. The letter format was enjoyable if you don't take it too seriously. I thought of it more as a clever way to show insight into the way people talk differently to different people than that they were literally letters she sent.

2 out of 5 stars not believeable.......2007-01-01

i didn't get into the format at all. i had a hard time she would actually write such long letters with such detail and even dialogue! when was the last time you wrote dialogue in your letters? i found this format so distracting that i simply skimmed until the end.
don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Novel.......2006-11-29

It has been a very long time since I have been so captivated by a book that I lost sleep. Though I had a little trouble getting into the first ten pages or so, by the time I'd hit page 15 I was hooked. By the time I got to page 50 I was staying up nights and running late for appointments to read it. (Yes, I'm slow) The True and Outstanding... is very fine rendering of a novel of passing in a unique format - all told in letters to other people from Olivia, a young woman possessing at the same time keen insights and stubborn blindness. The layering of Cervantes' Don Quixote serves as a map for the novel as well as a metaphore of Olivia's struggle to deal with her sister's cancer and her own baffling love life. It is not all a joust with a windmill, however. It is a strangly heroic and painful saga of love lived entirely through Olivia's eyes. I wanted it never to end. Yet, though I saw that ending coming, and knew it was happening, even wished it would hurry up and get it over with, I wanted this book to go on, and wished somewhere deep inside that Olivia would write me a letter, too. I borrowed this book last week, finished it tonight, and tomorrow will buy myself a copy and several more for friends. Really wonderful. N. Turner, author

      Book Description

Victor LaBont is a world-class artist who attributes his creative ability to a chair he owns - a chair that he claims was created and empowered by Leonardo Da Vinci. When his home catches fire, Victor is severely burned trying to rescue the chair. Later he realizes the chair was stolen before the house burned. Distraught that his creative abilities no longer exist without the chair, Victor's son Paul, a painter himself, sets out for Italy where they suspect the chair has been taken. While Victor contemplates his life in California without the chair, Paul grapples with his skepticism: Is Leonardo's chair real? Does it possess ancient power to create? Ultimately he, too, is seduced by the idea of the chair's power. Will he use the chair to recreate one of Leonard's paintings? Will he become another anonymous copyist?

      5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2006-07-05

Leonardo's Chair holds mystical power that has been passed down through generations. It also evokes a curse. The story kept my attention to the end because I couldn't figure out how the author was going to explain that power. I thought it was a great story with compelling characters.

The epilogue opened the possibily for a sequel, but I personally would rather have the loose ends tied up. But that's a personal preference.

I hope we hear more from this author soon!

5 out of 5 stars Storytelling at its Finest.......2006-06-09

Other reviewers have addressed the facts--I'll stick with the actual writing.

John DeSimone paints with a master's touch in this debut novel, providing beautiful description while still being a compelling storyteller--you can tell he loves to write. This is one of those rare novels that I'm hardpressed to find fault with--any fault, for that matter. Sure, Leonardo's Chair is not as fast-paced as most suspense novels. Instead of running through the story like a Porsch on the open road, it's more like touring Paris with a friendly local. I've never been to Italy, or California for that matter, but thanks the author's lush description, I now feel like I have an insider's look at the places he describes (I must say, following Paul's travels was a lot like going on an actual trip myself).

However, this is not to say that the story is not good. It is one of the top five books I've read in the past year (and I read a lot of them, too), and again, unlike other books, did not have a single character that wasn't believable. Or any of those annoying sub-plots that simply detract from the main story. When an author takes interesting characters, a believable plot, mystery, romance, history, and suspense and throws them together there can be nothing but success--and that's what DeSimone gets. I couldn't stop reading this book once I started. It has the accessibility of a modern novel, with the depth of a classic.

Are you still reading? Go buy the book already!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Description with Plenty of Suspense.......2005-07-30

Paul LaBont's artistic skills are eclipsed by his father's genius. When their home catches fire, Vincent LaBont is severely burned and a mystically empowered relic, a chair once created and owned by Leonardo Da Vinci, is stolen. Distraught that his creative abilities no longer exist without the chair, Vincent LaBont sends his son halfway around the world to Italy in order to restore the priceless antique.

Paul sets out for Italy, skeptical that the chair possesses any powers yet hopeful that the return of the chair will aid in his father's recovery. En route to Italy, Paul is in an accident and is taken to the nearby castle of a duke. Accepting the duke's hospitality, Paul learns that Leonardo's chair is confined within the castle. The duke is desperate to find a way to end the chair's evil curse. Paul meets Isabella, herself a painter, who is the duke's daughter and confronts the evil-minded Stein.

I emailed John DeSimone wanting to know how he had managed to write such a suspenseful book, one rich in its tones of Old World Italy set against fast-paced Laguna Beach, California. He shared that, while Italy remains a destination he desires to travel to, the textured detail found in Leonardo's Chair came from thorough research and a vivid imagination. I felt the dust of the ancient country and the chill of the great halls Paul LaBont walks in his search for Leonardo's chair.

John DeSimone succeeds in crafting a novel that pulls the reader in and holds him. You will imagine yourself in Savoy along with Paul, viewing masterpieces, tasting temptation, and confronting evil. Leonardo's Chair will definitely keep you up at night.

5 out of 5 stars A riveting novel from first page to last .......2005-06-05

Vincent LaBont is a world-class artist who attributes his creative ability to a very special char that he claims was created and empowered by none other than Leonardo Da Vinci. When his home catches fire, Vincent is severely burned trying to rescue the chair. It's only later that he discovers that the chair was stolen before the fire was set. Distraught, Vincent send his son Paul (a painter like himself) to Italy where the chair is suspected to have been taken. Is the chair truly a metaphysical source of artistic power? If so, should it be used to recreate one of Leonard's paintings. What is the chair true power and purpose? Leonardo's Chair is a riveting novel from first page to last and will led the reader on a roller coaster ride leading ultimately to an appreciation of what truly inspires an enduring artistic greatness.

      5 out of 5 stars More than a mystery . . . .......2005-04-24

DeSimone writes of a quest for Leonardo's chair. Labeling this novel a mystery sells it short. Leonardo's Chair is a story about redemption born out of the human frailties we know as greed and superstition.

The Befanini family rules the kitchens of the de Medici and their allies, serving well by fortifying their patrons' reputations and influence with all the power that a brilliant meal can supply. Young Ginevra Befanini serves more directly as companion and confidante to Caterina de Medici, while Ginevra's brother Tommaso is learning his family's craft and enhancing it with his own ideas and talents. The political forces of Renaissance Florence pull and push at them; plague stalks them; and other alien forces move through the kitchens and the city, menacing Caterina and her friends.

Historically precise, culinarily evocative (at the very least, have some pan di campagna and olives on hand as you read), and fantastically inventive, Michaela Roessner's writing will sweep you into the mazelike streets of Florence and the ominous tension of sorcerous conflict.

      3 out of 5 stars Ah, Florence.............2005-10-03

      Astra declinant, non necessitant.
The stars dispose, they do not compel.

A rich blend of history and authentic period detail with a touch of mysticism, The Stars Dispose tells the story of young Tommaso de Befanini, born into a Florentine family famed for its fine cooking. Tommaso, only 11 years of age, finds himself struggling with more than learning to properly carve a roast. The city of Florence is being torn asunder by warring factions, and the Befanini are employed by many of the important movers and shakers. This novel teems with famous characters - Michelangelo, Caterina de Medici, and Pope Clement, to name but a few. Roessner is a skillful writer, particular in her flair for description. Where this book falls short is in its plot, which is surprisingly slow and lumbering, ultimately leaving the reader hanging, a device that suggests plans for a sequel. Still, Stars is well worth reading for its atmosphere and winning characters. And if you like reading about fabulous feasts and recipes, open a bottle of your favorite vino, nibble some melone and prosciutto, and curl up with The Stars Dispose.

3 out of 5 stars good idea, falls short in execution.......2004-04-10

When I read the description of < >, I hoped I was getting a book along the lines of something by Ellen Kushner or Guy Gavriel Kay: historical or semi-historical fantasy with an interesting setting and a sophisticated plot.

Unfortunately, Roessner falls a little short. I'd give this 3 1/2 stars if I could, because < > has its good points: it's well-researched, a wide variety of historical actors interact on a lot of levels, and who wouldn't be interested in an alternate-universe version of Renaissance Florence? < > is a bit better than your average fantasy read.

Still, the plot meanders. Even worse (and several reviewers below have picked up on this), there's a bit too much fact packed into, or worked awkwardly into, what's supposed to be a work of fiction -- it's as if someone tried to turn a master's thesis into a novel. Most jarring of all, however, is Roessner's weakness when it comes to writing dialogue. Like a lot of fantasy authors, she mistakes stilted speech for sophisticated repartee. This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that several of the major characters are pre-teens. There aren't many college professors who talk the way Roessner's characters do, much less ten- or eleven-year-olds!

Most of the ingredients for a good novel are here (this is something of a pun, because food's quite important in < >, to the point that there are recipes in the back of the book). Maybe with more practice -- and especially with more natural dialogue -- Roessner will get better in future books at stirring those ingredients together.

4 out of 5 stars Lush details, beautiful writing.......2003-05-30

I really liked this book although I agree with the reviewer here that it was hard to understand the motivations of the characters (like Gentile). Still, the story is interesting and the writing well done. It reminded me some of Ellen Kushner's work.

5 out of 5 stars this book is dream material.......2001-12-03

this is one of my all time favorite books, the imagery is so vital to the story that,i still think of this book years after i have read it and its following story. i'm a chef and i delight in her mixing of the art world and the food realm with the magic of the times she writes about, the ice sculpture scene is still one of the most emotional things i have read. i think she unveiled what it must have been like to be michelangelo at that time and place with true passion, his and the authors!i would love to see this as a movie

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2000-12-28

There was a lot about this book that I liked. I enjoyed the descriptions of Italy and the food/kitchens. I liked the character, Tommaso, and his interaction/relationship with Michelangelo Buonarotti, but that wasn't enough to raise this series above average.

I agree with the earlier reviewer who had a comment about the way people speak in both Roessner's books - it *is* very expositionally based. Rather than taking a paragraph or a few lines on her own, she has the characters do it and it comes out sounding false or forced. There is one chapter in the first book (second chapter, I think?) between Cosimo Ruggiero and Ruggiero the Older that is massive exposition supposedly in the form of an occult lesson. Because we really haven't met these people, the "lesson" seems stiff and forced, done more for the information the author needs to put out there than anything else. She seems to have a love of the culture and a lot of knowledge gained from her research, it's simply the way she shares some of it that proves awkward.

I also had a hard time caring about the characters because she never really spent any time with any *one* of them except Tommaso and he was as clueless as I felt. Gentile, Tommaso's father, is left totally in the background until he's needed to move the plot to a particular point. He's mentioned once or twice but the next time we see him, he's raving at Piera about her use of "witchcraft" and how he's not going to stand for it anymore. Huh? When did this come about besides the one line we're given about how he's never been completely comfortable (I'm paraphrasing)? Suddenly, he's rip-roaring mad enough to tear a necklace from his wife's neck and tear around in a frenzy? And, after what would be a calamitous event in any parent's life, he's suddenly raping Filomena on a regular basis? Nothing Roessner writes about Gentile in the few crumbs she gives us beforehand gives basis to any of his actions, so Tommaso's discovery of Gentile in the act felt more like emotional manipulation than emotional empathy with Tommaso. All it did was move the plot to the next point she needed: Tommaso's relationship with Michelangelo.

And Piera...when she realizes that Ginevra might not have been the one who should have received all her training, does she do anything about it? No. She just wrings her hands until Roessner can have her miscarry and ultimately die. (OK, she did manage to rescue Filomena so I'll give her that much).

The series is a pleasant way to pass an afternoon or so but it feels overstuffed by facts to the exclusion of character development. I would have preferred a bit more internal dialogue, more of the goings-on in the Befanini family or in the de' Medici family through Tommaso's, Michelangelo's or Caterina's eyes, more dialogue and less exposition...more of the feeling that the characters were *doing* something besides serving as set pieces until the author decided it was time to change the scenery. History and fiction need to blend in books like these (see Colleen McCullough's "First Man In Rome" series or Thomas Flanagan's "Tenants of Time"). The time the author writes about is a fascinating time but I would have preferred a little less history in exchange for a little more story in this case.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this valuable resrouce.......2007-03-05

I've always loved watches and also deal in antiques and do estate sales. This book is very helpful. WE even found the exact watch my father in law has in it which thrilled us and one that was my late fathers' that I wore in my wedding. A great informational resource, great pics and a huge help!! 1 out of 5 stars 100 Years of Vintage Watches: Identification and Price Guide.......2005-09-30

Disappointing. Little if any information about European and English watches. Misleading title should be call American watches and a few others.

Unless you are into American watches - a waste of time and money

2 out of 5 stars A nice coffee table book. .......2005-03-02

The book has thousands of pictures of watches, mostly pocket ones. However, it does not cover the history of such watches It's just a picture timetable of watch development.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos, Valuable Reference.......2004-07-03

I found this book to be excellent reading. It includes hundreds of beautiful photos and a brief but fascinating historical summary for several well-known foreign and American watch manufacturers. Even a person who knows nothing about watches would enjoy browsing through this book. Highly recommended.

                  4 out of 5 stars Bruce lee.......2004-12-15

The book, Bruce Lee by Linda Tagliaferro, is an action-packed biography, including Bruce Lee in his fantastic movies like: "Enter the Dragon", "Fists of Fury", "Way of the Dragon," "The Chinese Connection". "Way of the Dragon" was later known as "Return of the Dragon" because it was released in the United States after Bruce's final movie, "Enter the Dragon".

I would rate this book with four stars because this book has a lot of action in it and good fighting sequences. The book also shares about marriage to Linda Lee having two kids, Shannon and Brandon Bruce Lee .Brandon was born on February 1, 1965 and Shannon was born on April 19, 1969.

On March 31, 1993 a tragedy happen in the making of "The Crow" Brandon died. He thought he was about to get shot with a blank but instead he was shot with a .44-caliber. Eric Draven pointed the gun at Brandon. He fired the gun and Brandon fell to the floor. The scene ended, but Brandon didn't get up.

Read this book you will like this biography very much by Linda Tagliaferro.

                  3 out of 5 stars Bruce lee, easy as a b c.......2002-08-22

Linda Tagliaferro's biography Bruce Lee offers an uncomplicated outline of Lee's life for young readers in the nine to twelve age group. The book portrays Lee as a positive role model for youngsters of any ethnic background. Additionally, the book gives brief scenarios for all of Bruce Lee's adult films and also offers a brief and thoughtful outline of Brandon Lee's short life and film career.

Tagliaferro traces Lee's Life from his birth in San Francisco in 1940 to his all too brief brush with fame in Hong Kong before his sudden death in 1973 and subsequent posthumous stardom. The childhood years of Bruce `never sits still' Lee in Hong Kong are nicely sketched by Tagliaferro. Also the descriptions of Lee's early days in America given by his various friends are touching. For example, Lee's life at Ruby Chows Chinese Restaurant in Seattle as recounted by his friend Skip Ellsworth. Lee's room is described as being, `exactly the same size as a normal closet. He slept on the floor and the "desk" that he studied on was a wooden apple box.' Bruce kept his clothes folded on the floor next to his bed. There was one bare lightbulb hanging from the ceiling'. However, perhaps understandably, the later, more complex years of Bruce Lee's life are less fully portrayed.

The `facts' are presented simply and clearly. However, adult readers will be only too well aware that the `facts' being presented are only one version of Bruce Lee's story. My main criticism of the book is that the absence of any real interest in Bruce Lee by Linda Tagliaferro is a weakness. Also the previous titles by Linda Tagliaferro for example, Genetic Engineering: Progress or Peril? chart a rather odd trajectory into writing about Bruce Lee. Overall however, Bruce Lee is a very pleasant little book; well illustrated with carefully chosen photographs on nearly every page. Furthermore, it attempts to offer children a positive message about what can be achieved in the face of obstacles and discrimination. For adult readers, it's strictly for the `must have everything about Bruce Lee type'. Otherwise, find a child you can buy it for, then borrow it!

All quotes taken from, Bruce Lee, by Linda Tagliaferro, (A&E Lerner Publications 2000).

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative book........2001-06-25

Well-written, well-balanced book on Bruce Lee, with good pictures and some interesting facts I hadn't heard before.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all.......2001-06-23

Although written for kids, this was a book that both adults and children would find fascinating and interesting. I couldn't put it down and wanted to read more. Many facts about Bruce Lee I had never known before. Wonderful pictures. Some educational background on Chinese culture.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2001-06-12

New interviews with Bruce's wife, author of "Enter The Dragon" and several of his original students. Lots of pictures. Some I'd never seen before. Solid information.
