Book #3 in Mackeage series.......2007-08-13
I read this book when it came out and failed to post a review at Amazon. Fortunately, I keep index cards of my book reviews, so pardon the dust and here goes.
This was Libby's story. Libby is a surgeon that has "healing" hands. She flees to Pinecreek, Maine and encounters the time-travel guys from books #1 and #2.
This book focuses on Michael MacBain (Robby's father--the infant Grace brought home in book #1)
Per the wacky wizard, Libby needs a "guardian" of sorts to protect her from all the folks needing healing.
This was such a nice story. I see it got all 5 stars and it sure earned that from me. Wonderful romance with great characters.
an unexpected pleasure.......2007-05-10
I really enjoyed the book. Janet Chapman made a awsome series here. Made me fall in love with Micheal and Maine.
Wedding the Highlander.......2005-12-31
I just finished this book and was not disappointed. This is the third book of the series and I've already begun the 4th and have the 5th on order. It's been a long time since I've read books that I didn't want to put down, but with this series I can't wait to find out what happens next. Great job Ms. Chapman and please keep them coming.
Sheer magic.......2005-09-02
Michael MacBain is a most unusual man. Born in 12th century Scotland, Michael and his men had been battling their enemies, the MacKeages, in the year 1200 when a wizard zapped them all into the modern world. Twelve years later, his fellow clansmen are dead, and Michael has moved to Maine and made peace with the MacKeages. Having already loved and lost two women, Michael is content to tend his Christmas tree farm and raise his son, Robbie. Young Robbie, however, has other plans. Determined to find a wife for his father (and a new mother for himself), Robbie decides to lease the house he inherited from his mother. Putting an ad up on the Internet, Robbie picks Libby Hart to be his tenant.
Dr. Elizabeth Hart has to hide and hide fast. A trauma surgeon with a fast track career in Los Angeles, Elizabeth has just cured two patients with nothing more than a touch. Apparently, all those stories she heard as a child from her Grammy Bea about specially gifted women in their family was true. Unfortunately, Elizabeth knows that if the truth comes out her life will become a nightmare. Needing time and distance to sort out her life, Elizabeth changes her name to Libby and heads for Pine Creek, Maine and a new career as a glass jewelry designer.
Coming to Maine feels like coming home to Libby, and she's instantly smitten with her new home and her young landlord, Robbie MacBain. But it is Robbie's incredibly infuriating, totally overwhelming, and absolutely gorgeous father who really rocks Libby's boat, and the feeling is mutual. Deciding to approach their libido in a rational fashion, Michael and Libby decide to have a no-strings-attached affair. Soon, that's not enough for either, but will their affair of the heart survive when secrets are revealed?
WEDDING THE HIGHLANDER takes readers back to the lives of Janet Chapman's time traveling Scotsmen, and the result is sheer magic. With her loving attention to detail, Ms. Chapman brings Pine Creek and its denizens to life. The soul of this tale, however, is the relationship that blossoms between the hero and heroine. Surrounded by otherworldly elements, Libby and Michael are simply a man and a woman destined to be together, and some of their scenes together will leave readers starry-eyed.
While this is the third book in the series, this story can stand on its own, and once a reader becomes caught up in the daily lives of the MacKeages, MacBains, and the ever-present wizard, Daar, it's a sure bet that reader will want to read the other books in this series !

Excellent!! A little bit of magic!.......2005-04-22
I loved this book. Ive read the first two in this series and really liked both of them but this is definitely my favorite. You can smell the testosterone in the air in this book...but not in an obnoxious way. But then I think I became partial to Michael MacBain immediately in the first book. I loved the down-home feeling about this whole series and the characters weaving in and out of each novel. I'll start Robbie's story tonight and hope to see more of the series soon!

Book Description
Josiah was born after the war was over, but its shadow still lies across the land of Sium. Even though the two countries had remained at peace for the past seventeen years, there is little doubt that the Meran Empire will continue its conquest one day. Josiah is too young to remember the war, but he is reminded of it every day; his dark skin betrays his Meran blood. Josiah meets Caleb, a Meran missionary. Caleb becomes interested in Josiah's origin, and finds out something Josiah has suspected for a long time-his father was a Meran general, Sefar, killed during the war near Josiah's hometown. Mireille and Crow decide to leave Sium as well, fearing prosecution. The four of them travel to Mer, and Josiah discovers a different culture and a different world. With a new war looming on the horizon, Josiah must decide whether he wants to be a conqueror or the conquered. But how can he take sides without betraying a part of his heritage?
E. Sedia lives in southern New Jersey.
Customer Reviews:
A harsh, fascinating, honest coming-of-age tale.......2005-07-30
According to Crow by E. Sedia is a fascinating fantasy novel -- and a harsh one.
More than anything, According to Crow is a book about the devastation of war. People die in her book who in other books would never even get wounded. War is indiscriminate. Heartbreak is widespread, on both sides. In clear, subdued prose that almost lulls you into a false sense of security, Crow tells the coming-of-age story of a boy whose mother was a war-time hero, and whose best friend holds the history of an entire world inside his head.
Fascinating stuff, and no magic lightning bolts or enchanted swords to be seen. The world reminded me a lot of K.J. Bishop's Etched City. With a beautiful cover painted by Alan Clark and great design all around by the Five Star books team, I highly recommend According to Crow.
moving and memorable coming of age fantasy .......2005-06-04
Eighteen years ago, the Meran Empire went to war against the kingdom of Sium reaching the village of Fiam. It was thought that General Sefar would raze the village but Ruth, a beautiful young woman was able to get into his tent; when she left she carried the general's head, which was put in the church as a reminder of victory. Nine months later, Ruth gives birth to Josiah.
While Ruth is regarded as a heroine, Josiah is treated like an outcast. A Meran missionary arrives to bring home the bones of his kinsman Sefar. When the visitor meets Josiah he realizes immediately that the teen is Sefar's son and also his kinsman. He invites Josiah to visit his paternal family in Meran before war breaks out again and is welcomed by every relative he has. War breaks out and after witnessing Sium treachery. Josiah joins the Meran army although he is still not sure what country he calls home.
ACCORDING TO CROW is a coming of age story in which a young man witnesses treachery and the horrors of war. This is also a tale of choices as Josiah struggles to learn where he truly belongs and what he is meant to do. This fantasy world has only a hint of magic as it is more sword than sorcery but actually is a clash between two very different cultures. E. Sedia writes a moving and memorable tale.

I love this book!.......2005-05-20
Okay, I'm biased, but this is an excellent book. The setting and story are rich, but what makes it stand out are the characters.
From the opening, when a female stranger walks into town, to Josiah and his struggle of allegiance, the altruistic but ready-to-fight Caleb, sexy and idealistic Thuraya, and countless others - each sharply defined and unique. Oh, and Crow himself, a caretaker of history that is as fragile as he is.
While Josiah is the main character, the story is really about his relationships with all the others, who are afire with the conflicts of this deeply realized land. The background of war is exciting but humane - heartbreaking in its realism. Through the characters, we get a fair look at both sides.
This very literate book should resonate with adults, but would also be great for teens. The characters and world linger in memory, and I am somehow left homesick after finishing it. Yes, it's another time and place, but I still feel a part of it. Or is that the other way around?
Book Description
Can my partner abuse me and still be a good parent? Should I stay with my partner for my children's sake? How should I talk to my children about the abuse and help them heal? Am I a bad mother?
Mothers in physically or emotionally abusive relationships ask themselves these questions every day. Here, a counselor reveals how abusers interact with and manipulate children-and how mothers can help their children recover from the trauma of witnessing abuse.
This book, the first ever of its kind, shows mothers how to:
- Protect children and help them heal emotionally
- Provide love, support, and positive role models, even in the midst of abuse
- Increase their chances of winning custody
- Help their kids feel good about themselves
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book.......2007-03-17
This book should be read by every family therapist, as it provides insights into how abusive partners manipulate not only their own families but also therapists and the legal system to maintain power and control over partners and children. This book is much more than another set of anecdotes.
When Dad Hurts Mom.......2006-07-24
This is an excellent book. It's informative, but very sensitive. I would highly recommend it to any moms out there that are being abused in any way, shape or form. Especially if you don't feel your kids are being affected by you being abused. Because guess what?! They are!
Not Targeted to Witnessess/Survivors of Domestic Violence.......2005-12-29
This book seems excellent for mothers who are either in or survivors of domestic violence ("DV"). However, if you are an adult who survived being raised in a home permeated by DV and you are looking for a book on healing the wounds, this is not the book for you. It gives great advice to assist mothers who have young children. I simply believe that I was not a part of the target audience for this particular book. I was looking for information for individuals who had witnessed repeated incidence of DV throughout their childhood and were attempting to heal the wounds. This is not the book for that purpose.
When Dad Hurt Mom.......2005-09-07
If there are any women out there like me, that are, or have gone through some of the worst things in life with abuse. This book is for you. It is well worth every penny.
Finally! Moms are saved!.......2004-08-10
I'm 5 years out of my marriage but my husband finally succeeded in getting my grown children to treat me without respect when I worked out of the country for a year. Little by little he talked me down, made fun of me, got them to belittle me - until when I came home, and they did the same to my face, I had PTSD flashbacks of his abuse of me. I wound up on a crisis hotline and this book was recommended to me.
My desperate cry was, When is it going to end? Will I die or get a terminal illness from stress before he leaves me alone? How do I get my babies back? And why aren't there laws against this and legal recourse for us moms?
This book explained that he would never quit trying to redeem himself for his abusive actions (both physical and emotional) by casting blame and doubt on me. He would try to ruin my reputation, ruin my health - do ANYthing to ultimately "WIN".
These guys don't care about "fair", they don't care about "truth", they don't care about anyone in the world but themselves, Bancroft makes us to understand. And, he informed me, they WILL try to turn your children - the ones YOU raised, loved and gave up your whole youth for - against you.
But, he says, don't worry because they will see him for what he is in time.
He spares no words describing these hard-core domestic criminals. He is appalled by their lack of morals and conscience and his heart is with the mother who must struggle against an appalling lack of laws to protect families from abusive men.
This is a must-read for any woman with children still in or finally out of an abusive marriage. He covers the prejudice in the laws, the judges, the lawyers and how the whole male-worshipping world has made the life of female and child victims of abuse difficult. And then he gives you tips on how to conquer this situation.
I hear Bancroft is now running from state to state to try to reform the laws. Everyone should read this book and follow his advice and lend their support.
Our children aren't safe - and our women certainly are NOT liberated - as long as the laws remain as they are.
We need:
strict laws against ALL abuse with HEAVY penalties,
laws providing recourse to SUE FOR EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL DAMAGES,
laws that guarantee lifetime alimony to provide men with incentive to participate in the success of their marriages (something women's lib has been working to get rid of so that we must work even with children),
child support laws that give children their mother, so a woman can leave an abusive marriage without destroying the children in the poverty that ensues today.
Women's standard of living drops and men's goes up some 40% after divorce!
Thanks, Lundy. I hope I get to meet you in the crusade!

CreekChub Lures and Collectibles.......2007-01-12
Excellent insight into the start-up, success, and demise of a wonderful lure manufacturer.A "must have" for Creek Chub lure collectors, or anyone interested in the company.I have used this book for reference many times while purchasing lures. Although the reference prices for various lures are not up to date (and of course they can't be, since value constantly changes, as is indicated by the author) they still give you a basis for determining the approximate value of lures.I'm glad I purchased it, as it is a tremendous asset for lure collectors
Customer Reviews:
Don't stop at the black and white color wheel . . . ........2007-03-30
Once I got over the fact that there is a line drawing (black & white) of a color wheel, with the names of the colors printed around it . . . I decided that this is an extremely informative book. I'm used to quilting books that dazzle with color on every page - but not this one. There is a mid section of 12 or 15 pgs. with gorgeous quilts, and a description by each of why the quilt "works". This book has well written explanations and drawings of balance, proportion, hues, tints, shapes, etc. and how each of these make us "feel" when used in different ways. Wolfrom is very, very detailed and thorough in the steps of planning a landscape quilt - from conception of an idea (she suggests excersizes to learn personal preference) to various forms of quilting the finished product to give it more impact. When I talked myself past that black and white color wheel, I decided this is an excellent book. A book to learn by, not to drool over. Color in the wheel (and a catchier cover) would have earned it 5 stars.

Candice is Divine.......2007-09-28
I try never to miss a show on TV-the re-runs are fun for me since I am just now discovering Candice this year. My daughter purchased the book for me & I was off and running. I have re-done the four second floor bedrooms with all of her ideas-How Divine!!!
I love this book.......2007-09-12
I love Candice Olson, I love her ideas, and her ability to create. I love all this yet I don't always like her style! Sometimes it's a little too feminine or old for me but if she designed my own place, I know it would be great. She has great tips on here for you and just great sketches and summaries of her projects you've seen. However, it is much more in-depth than on the show. I recommend this book!
Classic Candice.......2007-09-04
If you love her show, this will be a familiar layout and you'll recall just how she executed these looks. I wish there were details about where she sourced her lighting fixtures, furniture, floor coverings, those fabulous mirror panels she uses, and the lettering that she puts on walls, as well as specific details about "how" you get that Candice look (like the gem about putting the halogen potlights 16 to 18 inches from the wall to get that wall-washed look she loves). Candice, please give us your secrets! And by the way, if you haven't looked at her furniture line at Norwalk, run to the nearest store. I have one of her sofas, and it is truly Divine!
Candice Olson on Design.......2007-06-27
Very tastefully designed book. Pictures are truely worth a thousand words in everything she does. Simply an excellent read.
smashing success!.......2007-05-11
Prized photos teamed with easy reading provides insight into Candice's unique decorating style.
Candice's fun approach to decorating motivates even us ordinary folk to transform our uninspiring blah-rooms into soothing welcoming centers pleasing to both eyes and soul.
When is Candice and crew crossing the border? The people of the United States are waiting!
