4 out of 5 stars Interesting...once it got going.......2006-12-28

I'll admit I wasn't all that impressed by the first 100 or so pages, but after that, the story picked up pace and interest in a hurry. If you haven't read the Shenandoah Sisters series yet you might want to hold off and read that first. IMHO they're much better, but this one's great to read after them b/c you see Jeremiah's story in more detail. He becomes more than just a bit player...developing into a young man of character and courage.
Michael Phillips doesn't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A job well done.......2006-08-01

This book is a very simple yet enjoyable read. I don't fully know how historically accurate it is but I do know it makes you stop and think and appreciate the path paved before us by those who have since passed. I loved it and would definitely recommend this book and the following one. I intend on starting the Shenandoah series soon.

4 out of 5 stars it IS a perilous proposal.......2006-07-31

This book does keep you on the edge of your seat at times. It is a nice story, and is, most definitely HISTORICAL fiction. You could easily place it as a true story way back then. In my opinion, if you love history and some action/adventure, then you will most likely find this book enthralling, but if you are more like me you will find it okay. Average. I still did enjoy it, and I can't deny it was interesting. It did keep me wondering what would happen. I would recommend this as a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Good storytelling and excellent writing make this a delight to read.......2006-05-24

In A Perilous Proposal, Michael Phillips does the hard work to make it easy for the reader.

The good storytelling and excellent writing make this a delight to read. There are few unnecessary words. The smooth flow effortlessly carries the reader along.

Phillips can turn a phrase with the best of them. He writes, "It was a time of the year when the earth seemed fresh and alive and full of hope, and when you just couldn't help thinking that no matter what happened, somehow everything was going to turn out all right."

The realism gives a glimpse of life through the eyes of a runaway slave. The cruelty and hardships that Jake Patterson experience as a boy leave him with deep-seated anger and resentment. He blames his father for leaving when in reality his dad was deliberately sold to separate Jake's family. After his mother dies from an attack by a drunken white man, Jake flees out of fear that someone will find out about a terrible secret that he carries. It's one that haunts him on his journey to reconnect with his father and find himself.

Jake begins to soften when he experiences the kindness of others. He learns that not all white people are oppressors. Along the way he meets two young women, one white and one black, who struggle to keep a plantation going. The black woman, a former slave, takes up the narrative half way through the book. This is a classic coming of age story in the post-Civil War south.

It's also the first book in the Carolina Cousins series, which is related to the popular Shenandoah series.

Occasional reflections are especially rewarding. One character offers an observation on an overlooked response to hardship. "Anger's not a pretty thing. It makes people miserable inside. Then there's other folks that get sad and discouraged at all the hardships that come in their lives. Maybe they don't get angry, but they go around being sad and miserable and letting people know it. They want people to feel sorry for them, and that's not too pretty to see either."

Another section includes an insight on what it means to be a man. "Most men go through life trying to prove how brave and tough they are. But a real man is one with courage to face what's inside where no one else sees. Growing into a man with that kind of courage is a hard thing. But it's the only way to be a whole man."

Phillips has honed his writing skills to near perfection. He is at the top of his craft, which is why I enjoyed this as much as any of the books that he has written. It's a light, pleasurable read.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Christian fiction.......2005-12-15

Michael Phillips has done it again. A wonderful yet heart wrenching tale from the south after the War between the States. If you enjoyed his Shenandoah Sisters series, you will like this too. My recommendation is to read the entire Shenandoah Sisters series first.

      Book Description

New Year's Day, 1755 The life of Nathaniel Hopson, journeyman to the illustrious cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, is about to take a chilling turn. He has been sent to Cambridge to install a new library at the country home of Lord Montfort. Moments after the foul-tempered Montfort storms away from the afternoon dinner, a gunshot is heard. Hopson runs to the library to find him dead. His nephew and lawyer believe the conclusion is obvious: Montfort, burdened with gambling debts, must have taken his own life. The gun near Montfort's hand suggests suicide, but there are bloody footprints on the library floor. And there is a strange detail: he is clutching a small, elaborately carved box of rare grenadillo wood.

No sooner does Nathaniel become the unlikely investigator than another body is found, mutilated and frozen in the pond. Nathaniel knows this victim well -- but what was he doing on Montfort's estate? The search for answers takes Nathaniel from the slums of Fleet Street to the silk-draped rooms of the aristocracy that roil with jealousy and secrets. And he meets Madame Trenti, the alluring and mysterious Drury Lane actress and client of Chippendale's, who seems to have known not only Montfort but the dead man in the pond as well.

An ingenious first novel, The Grenadillo Box is a deliciously old-fashioned detective story, crafted with all the intricacy and polish of a Chippendale cabinet.

4 out of 5 stars Murders and mores of the past.......2004-09-08

Nathaniel Hopson is a journeyman cabinet maker who was apprenticed to the famous 18th century London cabinet maker, Thomas Chippendale. While installing a new library in the country home of Lord Montford, Nathaniel is present when the body of his patron is found shot dead. As Lord Montford was heavily in debt after gambling away a large part of his estate, everyone present at the dinner party which was taking place at the time, is convinced that he has committed suicide..all except Nathaniel! Taking into account bloody footprints in the room and more footprints in the snow outside the window, Nathaniel teams up with one of the dinner guests, neighbour, Lord Foley, to whom Lord Montford was indebted, to do some detective work. The next day, the mutilated body of Nathaniels' friend and workmate is found, frozen in a pond near the house. The box referred to in the books' title, is found near the hand of Lord Montford and proves to be a puzzle box made of many exotic woods..a diversion much sought after by the gentry of that time. It's a deliciously descriptive account of life among the merchant and upper classes of the 18th century, rathy wordy in the style of writers of that period, but a joy to readers of historical fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Solidly Good, though not Spectacular.......2004-07-02

Nathaniel Hopkins is a journeyman to Thomas Chippendale, and in that role is sent to the home of Lord Monfort to oversee the installation of some bookshelves. While he is there, Lord Monfort is found dead, though by his own hand or that of a murderer is unclear. Monfort's close associate, Lord Foley is given the task of sorting it all out and, having noticed Nate's exceptional observational skills, requests his help. Nate slowly unravels the mystery, often missing the truth all together. Eventually he is successful in unraveling both the mystery of Monfort and of Nate's friend John Partridge.

Gleeson's first novel has a real feel for London (and the surrounding countryside) in 1755 and it's apparent that she has done her research. Her writing is good and the mystery itself is compelling and interesting. I found flaw with a few important details, though--the leeches for example, and Madame Trenti for another. I won't be more specific, as I don't want to spoil the novel, so suffice it to say that there were several bits where the "answer" just was not answer enough for me.

Stylistically, too, the book is a bit flawed. According to the letter preface, the entire book is written from Nate to Alice, to tell her all that happened. However, Nate gives details that, given his character, he would not have told Alice. Nearly to the end of the book, he gives the manuscript to Alice, and yet continues to write it afterwards, which felt messy and unbelievable and simply did not flow well. Furthermore, in his preface, Nate mentions a desk that neither he nor Alice had seen at the time he wrote the letter--if we are to take in account the point where he stops writing, gives Alice the manuscript and then continues writing later. It was after this second bout of writing that the desk is seen.

Don't let me put you off this book, though, with my criticisms. It's still a good read, highly enjoyable and just winding enough to satisfy most mystery lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A highly atmospheric and exquisitely detailed debut.......2004-03-05

On New Year's Day, 1755, Nathaniel Hopson, an apprentice or journeyman to the cabinet maker, Thomas Chippendale, has just completed the finishing touches on the library of Lord Montfort at his country estate. He soon finds himself embroiled in a conflict as Lord Montfort is discovered dead in that same library. It is initially thought to be a suicide due to despondency as a direct result of excessive gambling debts. However, blood on a windowpane and the discovery of a body in a nearby pond tends to indicate a strong possibility of murder. One of the dead men is an old friend of Nathaniel and draws him into the investigation of the deaths. He travels, not only in this country village, but, throughout London to get at the truth.
A great deal of research went into this highly atmospheric and exquisitely detailed debut novel. A complaint might be that the author went into a bit too much detail thereby slowing the pacing, at times, to a standstill. However, characters were, overall, very realistically sketched and fit in quite well to the historical setting. It is this innate ability that Ms. Gleeson had to draw the reader into another world that makes this first novel so sterling. The highly compelling plot and clever solution only confirm this as one of the year's best.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent and riveting read.......2004-01-18

Because his good friend and fellow journeyman, John Partridge, is indisposed, cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale asks Nathaniel Hopson, to go to Cambridgeshire in order to install the new library that Lord Montfort had commissioned. And even though Nathaniel would much rather stay in London and pursue an acquaintance with the charming Miss Alice Goodchild (who is currently running her father's wood business), duty dictates that he obey Chippendale's orders. At Montfort's estate however, he finds himself at the beck and call of a petty tyrant, much given to violent displays of temper, and who's disposition has made life rather unpleasant for both his much younger second wife, as well as for his unmarried sister. Nathaniel is looking forward most heartily to finishing the job and leaving Cambridgeshire, when disaster strikes: on the very night that Lord Montfort had invited his neighbours to dinner and in order to show off his new library, he's found dead in the library. Everyone at first believes that he has killed himself, especially when it comes to light that Montfort had lost a great deal of money to his neighbour, Lord Foley. But Nathaniel observes certain things that leads him to the conclusion that Lord Montfort may have been murdered instead. Everything becomes even more complicated when the mutilated body of Nathaniel's friend, John Partridge, is found frozen in a lake on the estate. Are the two deaths connected? And if so how? Did the two men know each other? Did Montfort kill Partridge or vice versa? These are the questions that plague Nathaniel. And when Lord Foley, who for reasons of his own, decides to make use of Nathaniel in order to discover what really happened that fateful night, Nathaniel reluctantly agrees to play investigator. Because for Nathaniel, discovering who killed Partridge and why is far more important than discovering what the rich and the titled are up to. And he will use whatever pretext comes his way in order to bring Partridge's murderer to justice...

"The Grenadillo Box" made for some truly riveting reading. The authour is a rather well known art and antique expert, and her grasp for the history and social mores of the time (mid 18th century England) was fairly evident and added to the richness and texture of the novel. Also nicely one was the brilliant manner in which she captured the voice of her protagonist, Nathaniel Hopson. Nathaniel's awkwardness at mixing with those of a much higher social strata, the anger and loss he feels about Partridge's death, and the confusion he feels about his feelings for Alice is all very precisely and vividly portrayed. Indeed, it was this engaging and taking portrayal of Nathaniel that compelled me to read on. And while the plot did seem to be a little complicated (mainly because of the manner in which the story is allowed to unfold) the pacing was swift and taut, so that the book truly does make for an engrossing and suspenseful read. So that all in all, I'd vote "The Grenadillo Box" as a truly worthwhile and excellent read.

4 out of 5 stars Small but fancy.......2007-01-29

There's a reason these recipes are for small batches, they're not your ordinary fare. I misunderstood that when purchasing this book. I was looking for a smaller batch translation of what people usually fill up the cellar house with - peaches, pickles, corn. What a delightful surprise. This is the book you pick up when you're tired of the every day fare. This easy to read digest of 4-6 jar type batches is chock full of things you'd only make a few of and impress everyone with. Fancy mustards, vinegars, chutneys, relishes, and syrups. In short, the spice of life in a book.

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. The recipes are very easy and it contains more useful recipes than any other cookbook I have except Betty Crocker. From salsas to conserves to chutneys to marmalades, this book is just excellent. I've loved every recipe I've tried!

I like this book very much but it wasn't what I thought I was getting. I purchased it thinking it was a canning book.
It has great recipes but is meant for what the title says, small batches. Alot of recipes you will use right away or freeze. I have used some of the recipes and they are great!

5 out of 5 stars The Best for th accomplished cook.......2006-08-11

I received this great publication from a Pastry Chef friend who, although offering some reservations, said it is not for the common household cook and would not be #1 for a Pastry chef, it is excellent for those who are passionate about correct recipies. It is short on full descriptions because the author assumes you know the basics about pastries and do not need to be re-introduced to proper "Kneading" and "raising climate". If you need that, buy a basic Julia Child publication. If you want a truly indepth Baking journal that is designed for those who are already accomplished cooks, you will never find one more complete and accurate.

          3 out of 5 stars Not really a Bible.......1999-12-29

I just received this book as a Christmas gift and I can't really say that I'm impressed with it. The recipes sound good, but the instructions aren't that great. I think they could be a lot more descriptive. Also, it doesn't seem to be edited really well, a lot of the phrases are disconnected and make the directions or ingredients hard to understand. Luckily I have "Baking with Julia" so I can get the instructions from that, and use the ingredients from these recipes. All in all, I wouldn't have paid for it, but it's not a totally bad book, but you have to either know what you are supposed to do, or have another book to look it up. I would definately recommend the "Baking With Julia" instead of this one.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional book for anyone interested in bread baking!.......2001-03-01

The "Bread Baker's Bible" is a terrific book with incredible full-page color photos of each and every bread for which a recipe is given. There is a very helpful introduction that explains various baking techniques, equipment and ingredients. The book contains wonderful recipes for British, French, Mediterranean, North European, Scandinavian, American, Indian and Middle Eastern breads. I have made numerous breads from this "Bible" and each one has turned out wonderfully and beautifully, and I still consider myself somewhat of a bread-baking novice. I have especially enjoyed the recipes for Pugliese, Portuguese Corn Bread, Polish Rye Bread, German Sourdough Bread and English Muffins. But I look forward to trying all of the breads in this book as I dream about the many wonderful places from which these recipes come.

                Book Description

Nostalgia and grandeur combine in this pictorial tribute to two great events that eased the hardships of the Depression Era-the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and the 1939 New York World's Fair. These two great fairs gave visitors an opportunity to forget the hard times of the '30s and enjoy the myriad of events presented at these spectacular celebrations. Through this descriptive and colorful book you will experience for yourself the splendor and excitement of these two landmark World's Fairs. The author provides a virtual tour of each, from attractions such as the thrilling Skyride of 1933 and the towering Trylon of 1939 to the revolutionary fan dancing of Sally Rand along the Streets of Paris. Over 300 beautiful color photographs illustrate the vast array of posters, souvenirs, and memorabilia depicting attractions and exhibits from both fairs.

                4 out of 5 stars Great for 1933 and 1939 World's Fair Collectors.......2003-12-29

I am an avid collector of 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair memorabilia so naturally I was anxious to get my hands on a copy of this guide. Howard Rosen filled this collector's guide with an abundant amount of colorful photographs of items ranging from vases, bookmarks, china, tapestry, and posters from both the 1933 and 1939 World's Fairs. Also included is a brief explanation of why these two World's Fairs were so important for the psyche of the country during the Depression era.

Notwithstanding, I have two points that I would like to clarify about this guide. First, it is not an exhaustive display of all memorabilia available from these two World's Fairs. Rather it is simply a display of one individual's collection. Therefore there are many items in my own personal collection that were not included in this guide. Second, as with other collector's guide the prices provided by Howard Rosen should be only taken with a grain of salt. With the advent of the internet and such sites as eBay one can purchase the same displayed items in this guide for much cheaper. Shop around as there are still deals waiting to be grabbed.

Despite these two setbacks I have enjoyed browsing through this guide. It provides a great idea of what items are available for collecting that I have not seen before.

Highlighting the flexibility and fun of working with wire, these original designs twist, spiral, and wrap their way through necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Using only a few simple tools, a spool of wire, and a sprinkling of beads, aspiring jewelry designers can create adornments from metallic or colored wire. Projects are easy to adapt to taste and level of expertise, and wire-working techniques build up from simple to stunning, inspiring beginners and old hands alike. There are smart and sophisticated gold and silver wire designs, such as the Waterfall Chain necklace, as well as more casual designs made with colored wire, funky beads, and tiny seashells, including the Belly Dancer Bracelet or Exotic Charm Necklace. With sections on styles and further variations, this is a guide for anyone who wants to add some shine to their repertoire.

There were some interesting porjects but not like 25 houses under 2,500 sq. ft. Some really good detailing but also some that do not have the level of detail as the larger houses. Might be because of budget, not the house themselves.

The 25 houses are featured with photos, architectural drawings and site plans. The homes are varied to fit the sites and to match the personality of the owner.
You've heard of Tex-Mex? One house in San Diego combines Japanese and Mexican design elements, so you see, this is not just a collection of standard home plans.

                    Book Description

As quickly as technology advances, users demand more sophisticated graphics and interactivity. In such a fast-paced environment, seasoned graphic artists need constant inspiration. But just as important, they need timely information that helps them make the right software application choices and avoid costly technical mistakes.

How Did They Do That? provides both of these essential needs -- using stunning screen shots that visually profile top broadcast and film work internationally. With examples from well-known companies like MTV, Yu + Co and R!OT Design -- as well as projects from talented independent film makers -- the book explores each program from the inspiration that fueled each work to the software programs and nontraditional techniques used to achieve the end result.

Focusing not on step-by-step details, but on the more advanced information experienced designers need most, this valuable reference shows how the best motion graphics artists break the mold using innovative methods.

Mr. Greene displays knowledge of the subject, an eye for the obsurd and unusual, and a passion for motion pictures/pixels. Not bad for a freshman effort...three thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting and educational!.......2003-07-18

At last! A book that tackles this potentially dry subject with intelligence, wit and fun! I cannot imagine a reader (tekkie or not) who wouldn't both enjoy and learn from "How Did They Do That?". The author's humor, experience and vast understanding of the subject enfuse this book with richness and playfulness. I have learned and continue to learn many new ideas about motion graphics. The illustrations and photography are beautifully done. In short, Mr. Greene's book is very enjoyable, highly educational, and entirely satisfying.

                    5 out of 5 stars demystifies award-winners, makes me a winner too.......2003-06-11

This book helps me EVERY time I need help on a new project. It demystifies so many different processes and techniques, I feel more gutsy when I take on new design challenges. A few of my clients also notice that my work has come up to a new level of excellence -- and I know that this book has helped make a difference. Yes, the pictures are awesome, PLUS the writing style makes it so easy understand and even PLAYFUL, which makes studying fun and gives me more confidence in client meetings and when I'm off on my own turning around a project on tight deadline. Also, I find that when I explain technical stuff to clients now, I'm a better communicator because of this book -- and my clients love that, of course. When a book makes a difference like that, it's a rare gem.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source of information and inspiration.......2003-05-21

Well, *I * really enjoyed this book. It's not just pretty pictures; there is real substance here. It's got an excellent sampling of projects from a wide range of disciplines ranging across Film, Broadcast and New Media. I especially enjoyed the scope of the book in assembling work from both domestic and international artists. The book's strength comes from the quality of the projects and the crisp writeups. It 's fascinating to see where other designers have taken their
creativity and how they have approached their work.

As for the project writeups, they worked for me. The book is written "high level", i.e. no tips and tricks, but is definitely informative and insightful. It's great for quickly understanding how a project was approached from both a creative and a production perspective. All in all, an excellent source of information and inspiration.
