5 out of 5 stars an even better continuation of the good Captain............2007-08-24

I just finished the first Captain Lacey mystery a few days ago (The Hanover Square Affair), and am glad to report that the second has lived up to the expectations of the first book. Since book ones subject and characters are mentioned heavily in book 2 I would suggest that you read book one first, if possible.

As someone who is a fan of the regency period I really love these books. Lacey is a Regency hero in the best sense. I also like that the author has taken to showing the ugly underbelly of the English "ton" while showing the good aspects as well. I really love Lacey's "Watson" Lucius Grenville and I would happily read a book by the author with Grenville as the lead. The story was much more fleshed out as I heartily recommend this series to Regency Romance, Fiction or Historical Mystery fans alike.

5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinatingly deep characterizations make this Regency mystery series a stand out!.......2007-07-20

A Regimental Murder by Ashley Gardner is the second book in the Captain Gabriel Lacey series set in Regency London. Lacey is walking off some of his lingering depression when he spots a beautiful woman struggling with a man with a knife. He quickly intervenes and finds himself investigating her husband's recent murder and the label of murderer that went with him. Lacey involves his friend Grenville, cream of the ton, and bodies start dropping like flies. Lacey is a most enjoyable hero: he has no compunction about pounding the snot out of villains, and he treats ladies with extreme respect, all while maintaining his pride in poverty. He is threatened again for longtime nemesis Denis, and starts the search for his long lost wife and daughter. So much happens within the 240 pages, it makes you wonder why other authors can't cull their own 400 pages down to something more reasonable. Gardner's characters are deeply complex with unfathomable motivations. Lacey's relationships with Brandon and Louisa are constantly revealing new sides to each character. This is a mystery series with heart and intense characterization.

4 out of 5 stars This author really has talent........2006-12-21

I read the first novel in this series and rated it a huge, solid 5 stars. This one slipped a little for me but not actually by much. I have enjoyed both books so much that I will continue to read each and every installment unless Ms Gardner begins to assign chapters to the local kindergarten class and submit them as her own.

This book struck me as a kind of "fill-in-the-blanks" novel. We got to learn much more detail about all the charaters who are, obviously, going to continue right along with Lacey in his adventures. It is a rare talent indeed for an author to juggle so many characters and yet keep the reader interested in each and every one of them. Captain Lacey absolutely grows by leaps and bounds in this book. I like him as a character, I want to see him succede, maybe even to prosper (at least a tiny bit, just to make life a little easier for him). Does he never eat anything but a half loaf of bread? I take that back, he did have a bowl of greens and some meat at one point in this story. (What can I say, I'm a worrier.)

The mystery in this book did not seem to be quite as important to the overall effort but was used to give us more insight into Lacey and his past. The author continued to kill off all the suspects but she threw in a nifty little surprise at the end which I would never have guessed. She really got me there.

Overall, a fascinating read. Wonderful atmosphere. Fully fledged characters. A great look at England during this time with all its social divisions. Ms Gardner has obviously done a lot of research and it pays off in my favor each time I open another of her delightful books.

4 out of 5 stars Great new historical mystery series!.......2006-02-17

I only gave this book a 4 star rating but the rest of the series is solid fives. Excellent main character and interesting supporting characters. The mystery plots are also very well done. If you like Anne Perry, PB Ryan, etc, you'll like this series.

4 out of 5 stars Very good historical mystery........2005-04-10

Gardner has written a wonderful story with excellent characters. She has exposed a period of seeming elegance to have very little grace at all. The character Lacey is intriguing and fully dimensional. The story is full of twists and revelations, but intriguingly, not irritatingly, so. I shall definitely follow this series and highly recommend it for those who love historical mysteries.

The book had a nice pace, and really fun to read when you come home after stressfull day. Loved the characters, and how all three stories entwine. Ms. Foster did a great job.

3 out of 5 stars Starts with a bang, ends with a whimper..........2006-02-23

I must admit, I'm a sucker for trilogies.... it's always nice to see continuity with characters and for them to be further developed than in just one story. Although "Little Miss Innocent?" is really good, by the time you get to "Messing Around with Max" you're left wondering why your wasting your time.

4 out of 5 stars Cute stories.......2005-11-02

The characterizations overlapped a little, but the stories were cute and ended happily. It was a nice rainy day read.

5 out of 5 stars Three Terrific Full Length ReIssues!!!.......2005-09-29

This anthology is a reissue of a trilogy that is a personal favorite. It fast became a recommended read because of the close knit and truly convincing bond between siblings that Ms. Foster presents.

To begin with, you get a taste of the oldest and most mature of the three, Daniel Sawyers in, "Little Miss Innocent?". Daniel isn't real fond of Lace McGee. The way he figures it, she is the cause of his sister's sudden change from youthful tomboy to sexy femme fatale--not a terribly comforting persona for a big brother to have to swiftly become accustomed. Lace is much too brazen and entirely too liberal. However, when she is bitten in the derriere by one of her neighbor's dogs and ends up in the emergency room needing stitches, the physician in him takes a backseat to the hot-blooded man in him. For the first time in all his years, Daniel feels his professional detachment slip a few notches. And that rankles.

Still, being the upstanding guy that he is, Daniel not only stitches up Lace's bottom, but insists on driving her home as well. After all, she is his sister's friend and that makes her practically family. Of course, he refuses to admit that his helping Lace has anything to do with his attraction to her. Mainly because he's already decided not to act on his lusty feelings. So she was sexy. Alluring. And, absolutely every man's dream come to life. She was still all wrong for him. He didn't approve of her profession as Sex Therapist, nor did he care one wit for her forward and outspoken attitude. She talks entirely too candidly, and seems to not have a single modest bone in her lovely body.

But it's not long before Daniel finds himself offering to not only drive Lace home but to stay the night. Things get off track in a hurry and Daniel learns a few things about the blonde beauty he's tried so hard to avoid. For one, Lace McGee isn't the woman he thought she was. In fact, she's much, much more. And poor, struggling Daniel discovers that when he loosens up just the slightest bit, falling in love can be an exhilarating and passionate endeavor indeed!

*******************

Second in this Trio of full-length love stories is, "Annie Get Your Guy". This one turned out to be my own personal favorite. Annie is so much like most of us women: intelligent, talented, and strong, but rather insecure underneath it all. I related to her story, as I think most women will, because of her sweetly tenacious attitude towards Guy Donovan. If you've ever been in love with a man who has never seen you as that of the female gender, then Annie will strike a cord. If you've ever felt desperate to attract a man's attention, even at the cost of your own pride, then Annie will certainly make you smile.

Annie Sawyers is in a struggle with her heart. She is wildly, passionately in love with Guy Donovan and has been ever since she began blossoming into a woman. He, however, sees her as nothing more than a surrogate kid sister. She is so tired of being invisible to the only man that has ever made her blood race and her body burn just by looking at him. And when he announces that he's going to propose to a woman that Annie is just positive he couldn't possibly love, she decides it's high time to get serious with her plans of seducing Guy.

What does a woman do when she wants to prove to a man that she can light his fire and curl his toes? She consults her sex therapist best friend for tips! With Lace McGee's help, Annie locates nearly every book on sex and intimacy that was ever written and starts her education.

Unfortunately, when she relates to Guy that she's trying to attract a man's attention Guy goes ballistic-not realizing that the man is him. Annie sees this as another of his brotherly moments and steps up her seduction attempts by making a few provocative suggestions to the handsome devil. Guy, fearing he's lost his mind for thinking lascivious thoughts about his best friend's sister, swiftly speeds away from Annie and out of temptations reach all together. As a result of his hasty retreat, Guy ends up in a very nasty car accident that lands him in the hospital, banged up from head to toe and high as a kite on pain medication.

Thankfully, Annie comes to his rescue by flitting him off to the family's secluded cabin, where he can both recover in peace and think twice about his silly notions of marriage. Annie, being the sneaky and rather desperate woman that she is, uses this as an opportunity to have Guy all to herself. A cabin out in the woods, no phones, no communication with the outside world. Just her, Guy, a warm fire, and a comfy bed. Oh yeah, baby!

When Guy finally comes to his senses and realizes where he is, he tries, once more, to retreat. Really he does! But, the sweetly innocent Annie, makes it pretty darned difficult when she asks him to please help her become seductive and alluring. In his mind he knows that if any man didn't already see Annie for the desirable woman that she is then he must be an idiot, thus not worthy of Annie anyway. But, he was loathe to let Annie practice her skills on any other man. The very thought makes him sick to his stomach. So, being the decent fellow, Guy gives in and helps Annie. He denies even to himself that it might have anything to do with how hot he is for her. Good lord, he nearly killed himself when he drove head long into a semi truck, because he was thinking of her smooth tight body instead of the road, as he should have been.

Guy's plans are shot when he gets a little too into `helping' Annie and realizes there's no way on God's green earth that she will ever touch another man the way she's touched him.

Oh my, I just love it when the Hero struggles, kicks and screams against the love he feels and then once he comes to terms with it, he doesn't just embrace it, he hugs it close and never lets it go. Guy is the perfect Hero to me because he comes so close to making a huge mistake, but luckily for him he comes to his senses just in the knick of time.

*************************

Last of these three breathtaking stories is the nomadic Max Sawyers in, "Messing Around With Max". Like most middle children, Max is totally misunderstood. Oh sure he's every bit the Lothario his reputation boasts. His sexual prowess has never once been questioned.

Then again, that's before he had decided to swear off casual sex in favor of finding a bride. You see, Max needs a stable home environment for his fat and scruffy dog, Cleo. The poor thing deserves it after all she's gone through.

Then Maddie Montgomery lands at his feet, literally. She sorely tests his resolve. He tries to keep her at arm's length once she admits to not wanting anything to do with marriage, but he's only human for crying out loud!

Maddie wishes to only gain a little sexual experience; to notch her bedpost. Her ex-fiance had hurt her badly when she caught him with another woman and now she's got Max in her apartment and all to herself. Only one problem, he isn't exactly leaping at the chance to have sex with her. He explains-very clearly-that for him, another relationship based solely on sex is not what he's after. So, Maddie decides to hit below the belt. She tells him that she doesn't believe that he's as good in bed as she's heard. Max being 100% male sets out to prove just how good he can be.

Max can't quite seem to get enough of the intriguing woman and he swiftly comes to the conclusion that she's `the one'. Now he just needs to show her that he has more to offer than a good time in the sack.

These two were sweet and hilarious together. Max will surprise you with the depth of his character, and his gentle way with Cleo, his dog, will have you sighing. My favorite scene is when Maddie, who works at a woman's shelter, gets Max to come and talk to the `girls' about satisfying alternatives to sex. What a great scene!

**This story marks a delightful ending to a fabulous trio of stories...**

5 out of 5 stars a must have for every Lori Foster fan.......2005-09-28

Dr. Daniel Sawyers is tired and ready to go home when the unthinkable happens; Lace McGee walks into his emergency room . . . injured. She drives him crazy with her sexually open attitude, and the way she seems to have turned his baby sister from a tomboy into a femme fetal. His instincts as a doctor demand that he care for her injury and his instincts as a man demand that he not let any other doctor, or any other man, touch her. Lace is mortified to have Daniel be the one to take care of her injury and then terrified when he offers to take her home. She has been careful to foster Daniel's misconceptions about her, but her home reveals her true self and allowing Daniel to see that would make her too vulnerable to him. Daniel and Lace are such opposites it was very amusing to watch as they each got to know the "real" person. LITTLE MISS INNOCENT is a textbook case of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Annie Sawyers has been in love with her brother's best friend Guy Donovan since she was a teen, but Guy only sees her as a tomboy and the pesky little sister; that is about to change. Annie is changing her image and Guy will finally notice her as a woman. His announcement that he plans to ask another woman to marry him throws her for a loop and she is afraid that she will lose him before she gets a chance to implement her plan. Fate intervenes and offers Annie the perfect opportunity to get his attention and she intends to do just that. ANNIE, GET YOUR GUY is sweet and laugh-out-loud-funny. There were times that Annie threw Guy for so much of a loop that I ALMOST felt sorry for him.

After her engagement ends in disaster and humiliation, Maddie Montgomery is looking for someone to help her put notches in her bedpost. Ladies man, Max Sawyers is looking for someone to settle down and help him raise Cleo, his dog. Maddie thinks that Max is perfect she just has to talk him into a FLING. Max thinks that Maddie is perfect he just has to talk her into a COMMITMENT. How can you not love a man who is sweet, sexy and loves his dog? MESSING AROUND WITH MAX is the type of story that can be read again and again and never lose its charm.

I absolutely love connecting stories and NOBODY does them better than Lori Foster. The stories of these three siblings were previously released as category titles and as they are all on the very hard to find list, and some of Ms. Foster's earliest work, it is a real treat to have them all together in one book.

1 out of 5 stars Not the original Nifft.......2002-03-20

My first exposure to Michael Shea was in 'Nifft the Lean'. It is an excellent book which throughly grabbed my imagination. I looked forward to more Nifft stories. Unfortunately, 'Behemoths' is nothing like the former book. It is written in the first person in a very stilted style which I found difficult to read. Or maybe what I found difficult was believing that this was the same Nifft protrayed in the earlier work? In either case before I got very far into the book I was wishing a fatal accident on Nifft or his companion. Anything to end the incipid dialogue.

For those who want to read Michael Shea at his best go pick up 'Nifft The Lean'. Leave this one to collect dust.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly Imaginative Fantasy Entertainment.......1999-10-07

Shea is one of the most underappreciated fantasy authors alive. This book will delight serious fans of the fantastic with its outrageous landscapes, bizarre creatures, vivid prose and plentiful black humor. Don't miss it.

    2 out of 5 stars Sadly dissappointing.......1999-06-30

Having read the classic "Nift the lean" I licked my lips with anticipation when I heard that there was a sequeal/prequeal.I opened the pages expecting something akin to "The Demon Sea" sadly that was not the case. I found the writing surprisingly difficult to read lacking the usaul Jack Vance verve and wit combined with a Clark Ashton Smith imagery. Still other Michael Shea fans may disagree, how ever for me it was disappointment becaue I know Michael Shea is an exceptional writer.

      5 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi or Horror?.......2007-01-13

This is the question I ask myself. While Shea's character Nifft adventures in a Sci-Fi/Fantasy world, I would really characterize it as horror. And some of the best horror I have ever read. Now, when Shea tries to write pure horror, it IS the best I have ever read (Fat Face, I Said The Fly). Mines Of Behemoth has Nifft and his pal Barnar decending into the titular mines on a mission to gather a liquid from giant insects. Naturally, once at work, they find further trouble to get into by descending into Hell itself. Such close proximity to Hell leads to subtle changes in their personalities.
To fans of Nifft ( I.E. anybody who has ever read one of his adventures) this book is a must read. At least two or three times. Shea is the type of author writes stories that affect you long after you read them, as certain realizations set in only upon consideration after the story is finished. The best example of this is his horror novella I, Said The fly. The horrors within that story are really only hinted at. But yet, it is one of the most "horrific by implication" stories I have ever read.
If there is one thing Michael Shea is horribly guilty of, it's not writing enough! His stories are far too few. As I am reading one of his works, I frequently look with dread at the constantly shrinking number of pages.

4 out of 5 stars Overview And Ideas For Coping.......2002-11-30

Grown-ups have ADD too. Lynn Weiss was the first to tell us so, and she brought the concept to national awareness.

Her title, "Attention Deficit Disorder In Adults" mises the pizzazz enjoyed by flashier titled books, but the content is succinct and superb. The much larger "Driven to Distraction" is more thorough, by far, but it also has 100 more pages. Weiss' gives the reader just enough to start the reader exploring ADD seriously for the first time.

Kenneth A. Bonnet Ph. D. is promoted with her, as he penned the introduction. Feel free to skip it; there is nothing useful there.

Just as anecdotal as any other psychology-related popularly written book, the reader will see several case studies to which he or she might relate.

Weiss lists and describes the emotional pain felt by most ADD sufferers, from self-esteem to anger and more.

She presents the positives of ADD, and how having it isn't a condemnation to a life of rags and sad frustrations.

Unlike some other books, Weiss isn't playing the game that ADD is a blessing, but she objectively acknowledges what it is, and what can be done about it. She discusses with candor romantic relationships. There is an excellent question-answer section for friends and family.

The best value comes from the chapter on restructuring. At a certain point, someone with ADD knows what's going on, but what they want to know is how to deal with it. Weiss shows the way with example charts that can realistically applied.

The singular drawback to this book is its need for an update. Research has been exploding with new ideas in medication, diagnoses and management. Weiss tackles all of this in a 60+ page Appendices section, with contact information for support groups, organizations, and sample official letters to interested parties. Year to year, these lists can quickly become out of date.

I'm a big fan of Weiss for the reason that through every one of her books, she's a pragmatist. No silly games of "I think I can, I think I can," but good old-fashioned how-tos.

Other helpful books in the ADD reader's library will be "Driven to Distraction" by Hallowell and Ratey, "Uncommon Gifts" by James Evans (very encouraging, especially for men), and "Managing Attention & Learning Disorders: Super Survival Strategies" by Elaine K. McEwan.

I fully recommend "Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults" by Lynn Weiss.

5 out of 5 stars My ADHD "bible".......2001-08-04

This book was great for me! It was as though the author had been living inside my brain. Some of the issues in this particular book did not particularly pertain to me, but most of them did. I have purchased several of these books and given them to people who have been diagnosed adult ADD or ADHD telling them to return it if they did not like it. If they did like it then they could reimburse me for it. So far 6 of 6 people have sent me a thank you note with a check for repayment. I have just ordered another copy of this book for my fiance to have for his own referance since this book does a much better job of explaining how I think, feel, act etc than I can!

Another book that I read just after being diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is "Safe People" by Cloud and Townsend. It helped me to re-set limits, re-define boundaries, and fine tune my interactions. It is also available on audio!

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-07-23

I bought this book, suspecting that I might have Adult ADD. I was hoping to get a book that presented a general overview of the condition, with an emphasis on adults. Though the book focuses on adults, I was disappointed because like previous reviewers of this book, I found that it's geared toward those with the hyperactivity vs. inattentive type. Although I could empathize, I couldn't related to many of the stories about extremely dysfunctional relationships and coping styles, so the book wasn't very helpful to me.

I believe that I've never been diagnosed with the condition precisely because of the lack of the hyperactivity symptoms (e.g. acting out behavior in class) that the book focused on. I overcompensated in various areas to function & "succeed" the best I could. I was disappointed that the book didn't really get into this aspect of Adult ADD (overcompensation), and seemed to focus on adults who had "failure after failure" and experienced a great deal of verbal and/or physical abuse as a result, as well.

There were some helpful tips in managing ADD symptoms such as distractability. e.g. She suggested working on pacing of tasks and creating a conducive environment. However, she presented some of the ideas as if all those with ADD would benefit. e.g. She wrote "Sound screens are important," explaining that "white noise" like TV or the radio could help an individual focus on a task. Perhaps, but personally, white noise doesn't work for me, and distracts rather than focuses my attention. I need complete silence, and must wear earplugs to concentrate. I appreciated her inclusion of the white noise idea, but I think it would've been better if she presented it as one option, not a suggestion for everyone.

3 out of 5 stars This primarily deals with hyperactive type adhd.......2000-11-09

This book would probably be helpful in dealing with adhd that is hyperactive but if you have the primarily inattentive type...pass on this book. As a matter of fact, there is a quiz to "self-test" yourself. If you are primarily inattentive this test will not be accurate. In fact, as I re-call the author even says something to the effect if you don't have a positive on this test...you aren't adhd. Now, I know the field of adhd has changed and grown... and maybe the book just hasnt caught up. If you are adhd-hyperactive, I can see this book being helpful. If you arent hyperactive I cant see any help at all... in fact someone telling you you don't have something your doctor says you do have is only confusing. If you are a woman...."woman and add" is the best book i have read...and there is alot about inattentive type adhd.

4 out of 5 stars Very good info for starting out..........2000-09-05

This was the first book that I read on the subject of adults with ADD, and a lot of the info in there was, for me, an awakening. Upon reading through the various chapters and coming across traits in others, I could point to it and go "Hey! So I'm not just wierd, that's normal for being ADD!" I also liked her attitude that ADD didn't actually mean one had a disorder or a deficit, as every individual who I'd told up to that point that I'd had it had relayed to me just how sorry they were for me that my brain was "that way". She did go a bit heavily on the emotional damage caused by being "differently brained", but her spiel is obviously on the damage done to self-esteem because of this inability to operate "normally". All in all it was a wonderful introductory book, and a wonderful gateway in to further reading and researching on adults with ADD.

I've dined at the restaurant many times, and it is consistently good. The cookbook is just as good as the restaurant - especially the Penne Gratin (very rich, very decadent and VERY delicious!)

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking.

You can actually grill a delicious pizza while friends hang out around the barbecue drinking red wine! The soups are delicious as well as the salads, meat entrees and their famous seasoning recipes! A must have for family meals as well as friendly get togethers!

      Book Description

Corning Ware and Visions were the most versatile forms of dishes and cookware ever made. Created from the durable Pyroceram material originally used on the nosecones of rockets, they are the only dishes that can be used in the oven, in the freezer, on the range top, or in the microwave. Now that the Pyroceram material is no longer being produced, a huge secondary market has erupted for these beautiful and durable dishes. This book chronicles the 40+ years of Corning Ware and the 15 years of Visions. Compiled directly from information in the Corning Glass Works archives, this complete and unabridged guide covers the 60+ patterns, hundreds of shapes, and thousands of specific dishes of Corning Ware and Visions made since 1956. The book includes hundreds of detailed pictures, as well as specific information about each piece, including production dates, rarity, current value, and other interesting information. This guide includes the history of Corning Ware, Visions, and the Corning Glass Works, as well as facts about how Corning Ware and Visions were invented, manufactured, and sold to the public. Many historical photographs and advertisements are provided. This book is essential for any kitchen or glassware collector, dealer, trader, or appraiser, or for anybody else who appreciates this beautiful and adaptable cookware.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Corning Ware Bible.......2007-05-16

Kyle Coroneos has written a lovely, informative book that I find myself using constantly. I originally purchased this large paperback just so I could identify my mother's Corning Ware pieces, in the hopes that I could fill in her pattern set (once I realized Corning Ware was no longer being made!).

Soon, I found myself purusing eBay, book in hand, wondering if I should start my own collection. Now, whenever I visit thrift or garage sales, I leapt upon the Corning Ware items I see, eager to take them home and check them against the pictures and information in the book. Then I sell them myself on eBay!

This book has become my Corning Ware Bible. Not only an almost complete list of every product Corning made through the 20th century, but each item is accompanied by great photos, making it a simple task to identify pieces and match patterns and casserole sets. Furthermore, Coroneos did a through job of giving a history, not only of the Corning Works company, but also of the items made, so that you're learning all those technical, nitty gritty details about an item that adds value to it. He even bothers to translate one pattern's french words, just in case you can't be bothered to look up one online yourself.

Most importantly, a section on how to clean your Corning Ware is in the back, and the book was worth the $15 just for that information alone! I've been saving many scorched pans with Coroneos' tips. Whether you are a collector or a seller of Corning Ware, if you don't have this book, you are losing out.

5 out of 5 stars Visions cookware still works for me. Remember them?.......2006-07-26

The brown and raspberry glass is so seventies and they were created POST seventies. They came in these giant boxes in the stores and they seemed a good idea so people bought them ... for other people as well as for themselves. Well, that's why you see with regularity Visions cookware for sale on ebay (at affordable prices) and sometimes NIP i.e. New in Package. LOL.

The problem with this cookware is that it heats up very quickly and whatever you are cooking very easily burns so you end up with a hard to clean black crust on the bottom. I've heard that the nonstick version is worse because it chips off. *shudder*

Now that I have a dishwasher, I love them because they are good enough that I don't have to go on the torture trail after Le Creuset and the other likely suspects. I use them all the time in addition to a thin metal wok. I like what other people liked about them - that you could see into the pot - but for most people that was not enough to stick with a pretty annoying cooking experience.

The best piece of Visions cookware is the stockpot on the cover of this book. I never need to buy a designated popper or a microwave because with this stockpot all I need do is coat the bottom with olive oil, sprinkle a layer of kernels, lid on and watch them go. I don't get burned kernels and only one or two unpopped kernels. It's deep enough to steam a pyrex bowl of rice and a platter of some savory. It's also the best looking of the set. I also use all the different sizes as mixing bowls with long handles. They are great.

5 out of 5 stars A source of practical knowledge and inspiration!.......2004-03-20

This book is easy to read and offers simple, but thorough explanations on the basic principals of colour (i.e., warm tons versus cool tons, colour intensity versus hue etc). It also gives the reader an easy to follow guide on how to go about choosing colour and how to tackle a painting project for any sort of room. A delight to read and filled with beautiful photos that are sure to inspire a decorator of any income.

          1 out of 5 stars "Atmospheric" ?.......2003-11-05

Well, this book was a big waste of money. If you want to live with all the "atmosphere" of a brown paper bag, buy this. If you want to put color into your home, don't.

5 out of 5 stars Real color for real life.......2003-08-26

This book is very good for those that realize normal colors exist. I can't decorate a home like a magazine because I live on earth. Color Palettes helps provide information on how to paint and decorate a home for those that can't afford $25k a room for bright reds and blues. It provides excellent suggestions and pictures for basic colors. I am very satisfied and highly recommend Color Palettes.

4 out of 5 stars Colors that aren't boring but are livable.......2003-07-18

The person who wrote the review saying she was trying to get away from builder beige may not understand what these colors look like in person. They are anything but typical and boring. Donald Kaufman understands how mix colors with enough depth and luminosity that a neutral feels beautiful and not blah. I think Suzanne Butterfield's book is prettier and explains his precepts even better than his own books. I have a DKC blue in my living room and a DKC green in my dining room and I love them. The paint companies would like you to think that you should try bolder colors, but they're hard to choose and they're not all beautiful colors you'd want to live with. The DKC (and also Martha Stewart) palettes are limited for a reason. Not every color out there will look good up on your walls.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly old looking.......2003-06-03

This book is old looking and is not giving me the inspiration and help I was looking for. I'm trying to get away from my "builder beige" house so the idea of "atmospheric interiors" sounded great. Unfortunately, this author seems to think that "atmospheric interiors" ARE beige or variations thereof. Depressing, dated.

            4 out of 5 stars All-American Pin-up art.......2004-12-23

Set in a scrapbook-type format, this book showcases pin-up art used to help G.I.'s show exactly what they were fighting for back during the World Wars.

Plane Nose Art, Calenders and matchbook covers are some of the pieces showcased in this book. Everyone from Vargas to Elvgren's artworks are shown in a small sampling, that'll help entice you to look them up further.

Great racy art (considering it's been decades since they were made) of an era long gone. These pieces are definitely a 'less-is-more' situation where what you don't see is sexier than what you do.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just "Pin-Ups"..........2003-07-29

I decided to add this to my "Pin- Up Book" collection when the price fell below $$$!

Although I really had no idea what to expect, imagine my surprise (and astonishment!), when I discovered that this book is not only a great "Pin-Up" resource, but also a fantastic "Nose Art" book (in it's own right!).

Not only does it cover the B-24 Liberator (in abundance), but also includes the B-17, B-25, B-26 and B-29 (bombers), and features fighter aircraft as well! Tons of color photos, never before published.

As an added bonus, I didn't realize this was a huge "Coffee Table" book! (13.35 x 10.32 in.) with 144 pages of visual delight!

2 out of 5 stars The introduction is the best part!.......2002-08-02

The introduction to this book is an informative piece about various pin-up artists of the WWII era; however, most of the book was a scrapbook style work that left much to be desired. The main fault with the display of images was that there was no way to tell which artists created which images. Another drawback was how "racy" some of the images were. This significantly limits the appropraite audience for this book.

5 out of 5 stars The story and influence of the pin-up girl during WW II.......2001-05-18

For The Boys blends an art history book with a focus on film and military images, considering the story and influence of the pin-up girl during World War II. For The Boys profiles calendars, postcards, mathbooks and other memorabilia featuring the girls and uses many original source images by Vargas, Elvgren and others to accompany photo-packed pages and information. A colorful, revealing collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great photographs and artwork, poor presentation.......2000-09-26

I have quite a few books on the subject matter and although I love the original artwork being presented next to the nose-art photos, I really felt that proper credit should've been given to the artists (both original and the Service Men). On some pieces you can see the signature but on a lot of them, you can't and the artists aren't cited. On the photos of the Bombers and Fighters, it would've been nice if the authors had done a little more research and included Bomb or Fighter Groups/Squadrons to give further credit to the Service men who so faithfully recreated their favorite pin-ups on their aircraft.

The layouts are also sometimes too "BUSY" and give you a SCRAPBOOK FEELING, but again, THE ARTWORK AND PHOTOGRAPHS MAKE UP FOR THE OBVIOUS SHORTCOMINGS.

I would recommend "VINTAGE AIRCRAFT NOSEART" for better pictures of the painted aircrafts, and the "GREAT AMERICAN PIN-UP" as a starting point if you're really interested in both art forms as those two books are jammed packed with both good photographs, and rich history. then perhaps getting books on your favorite individual artists. Mine are Vargas and Elvgren.

There's some good information here. However, Jones' writing is stylistically poor, making for a frustrating read (and not in a productively challenging way). Her citations (or lack thereof) are also frustrating not only in terms of the interviews (as others have mentioned), but even in her other sources. For example, she quotes bell hooks, yet the hooks texts in her bibliography do not have said quote.

I could write a better book about Prince. Definitely go for the Per Nilsen book instead.

1 out of 5 stars Instead of this book, buy Per Nilsen's DanceMusicSexRomance.......2000-07-23

After reading this book, I wonder if Ms. Jones has to pay any penalties for ripping off other people who interviewed Prince and didn't give credit. She made it sound as though she was interviewing Prince even though there are direct quotes from other interviews made by others. Incredibly tacky! If you want to know more about Prince, read Per Nilsen's book "DanceMusicSexRomance." Even though it only works up to the end of 1987, it is absolutely incredible. Stay away from "Purple Reign." I felt truly ripped off.

It's all too obvious that you-know-who wanted to have the final say on this book--after all, we're talking about the guy who has done all he can to have other books about him which he considered "too revealing" vanish. What is amazing, though, is some of the details which the book does bring up (such as in the notorious "epilogue") which I'm surprised he allowed the author to get away with. What I also think would be REALLY fascinating would be if a new "updated" version of this book were released featuring a whole new chapter on the way Prince handled what is now known as "The Crystal Ball Fiasco" and his threatening other websites on the internet. Even better, to hear him say something about those actions himself and see if he either simply didn't care or did care but just made some serious blunders without knowing how to apologize. I wish I knew.

1 out of 5 stars Forgot this book!.......1999-11-24

Awful book! Forgot this book and most books written on this brilliant, fascinating and complicated subject. Read the Spike Lee or a Steve Perry interviews or better yet, pick up any album and listen to the lyrics or go to the man's web site and read some of his comments or talk to a diehard from Minneapolis.
