"I sentence you, Mr. Weaver, to be hanged for the most horrible crime of murder." Hearing that judicial decree, Benjamin Weaver--former pugilist, current "thief-taker," and future master of disguise--begins one of the sorriest days of his life. And things will only get worse, as David Liss reveals in A Spectacle of Corruption, his exuberant novel of 18th-century political chicanery. Tossed into London's notorious Newgate Prison, Weaver employs his considerable energy and guile (plus tools slipped to him by a mysterious admirer at his trial) to escape--naked--into the city's filthy streets. But then, he risks recapture by trying to figure out who framed him for slaying labor agitator Walter Yate, and why.

How all of this trouble derived from Weaver's pursuit of the culprit behind a priest's recent spate of hate mail propels the balance of this yarn--the sequel to Liss's Edgar Award-winning debut novel, A Conspiracy of Paper. It also pushes the Jewish "ruffian-for-hire" into the jeopardous midst of a British power struggle that pits supporters of King George I against the Jacobites, who favor the return of his dethroned Catholic rival, James II. Assisted by his puckish surgeon friend Elias Gordon, Weaver assumes the role of a prosperous plantation owner from Jamaica and penetrates the upper echelons of 1722 London society, hoping to gather information he can use against Dennis Dogmill, a "vicious and unpredictable" tobacco man who may actually have ordained Yate's killing. As Weaver ranges through London's fetid pubs and fancy theaters, and attracts the amorous attention of Dogmill's surprisingly shrewd sister, he also finds himself in the uncomfortable position of backing Griffin Melbury, a Tory candidate for the House of Commons--and the man who stole away his beloved Miriam Lienzo.

Liss has a keen eye for entertaining details of Georgian life, from that period's exotic diction ("The men in your gang are nothing but cutpurses and mollies and buggerantos") to its most reprehensible pastimes, including "goose pulling"--about which the less said, the better. And though some readers may bog down in the explained distinctions between Whigs and Tories, the author finds considerable humor in that political rivalry and the parties' get-out-the-vote efforts. Once you accept the rather dubious notion that fugitive Weaver could hide in plain sight, A Spectacle of Corruption can be appreciated as the lusty thriller Liss clearly intended it to be. --J. Kingston Pierce

Download Description

Benjamin Weaver, the quick-witted pugilist turned private investigator, returns in David Liss's sequel to the Edgar Award-winning novel, A Conspiracy of Paper.

Moments after his conviction for a murder he did not commit, at a trial presided over by a judge determined to find him guilty, Benjamin Weaver is accosted by a stranger who cunningly slips a lockpick and a file into his hands. In an instant he understands two things: Someone had gone to a great deal of trouble to see him condemned to hang—and another equally mysterious agent is determined to see him free.

So begins A Spectacle of Corruption, which heralds the return of Benjamin Weaver, the hero of A Conspiracy of Paper. After a daring escape from eighteenth-century London's most notorious prison, Weaver must face another challenge: how to prove himself innocent of a crime when the corrupt courts have already shown they want only to see him hang. To discover the truth and clear his name, he will have to understand the motivations behind a secret scheme to extort a priest, uncover double-dealings in the unrest among London's dockworkers, and expose the conspiracy that links the plot against him to the looming national election—an election with the potential to spark a revolution and topple the monarchy.

Unable to show his face in public, Weaver pursues his inquiry in the guise of a wealthy merchant who seeks to involve himself in the political scene. But he soon finds that the world of polite society and politics is filled with schemers and plotters, men who pursue riches and power—and those who seek to return the son of the deposed king to the throne. Desperately navigating a labyrinth of politicians, crime lords, assassins, and spies, Weaver learns that, in an election year, little is what it seems and the truth comes at a staggeringly high cost.

Once again, acclaimed author David Liss combines historical erudition with mystery, complex characterization, and a captivating sense of humor. A Spectacle of Corruption offers insight into our own world of political scheming, and it firmly establishes David Liss as one of the best writers of intellectual suspense at work today.

"The many readers who loved Liss's first book have been eagerly awaiting a sequel... Mystery and mainstream readers with a taste for gritty historical fiction will relish Liss's glorious dialogue, lively rogues, fascinating setting and indomitable hero."
   PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"With eloquent wit, Liss manipulates the concepts of misdirection and probability theory in his serpentine third novel. Once again, we meet the unconventional protagonist of the author's Edgar-winning debut A Conspiracy of Paper (2000).... Liss's impressive research provides a wealth of information about 18th-century politics, emergent labor organizations, and gradations of etiquette and malfeasance among contrasting social levels. And Weaver's somber, wry, knowing narrator's voice is a deadpan delight. Furthermore, it all ends with yet another twist that seems to promise we'll hear more from-and of-the indefatigable Benjamin Weaver. Let's hope so."

4 out of 5 stars Benjamin Weaver does it again..........2007-01-22

Another fine book from Mr.David Liss with his pugilist hero Benjamin Weaver barely cheating death at the end of the rope in 18th cent. London, investigating his own case of mistaken death sentence amidst one of the firt political corruption scandals in England. Weaver, a famous London's "thief-taker", escapes death-cell, tries to solve the murder case`he is accused of, having mind games with the lost love interest, playing double-games during elections and attempting to get untangled from political mess. The book's got lots fine points and gets action going, although there are parts when the pace snails down, and the end is rather rushed and doesn't satisfy perfectly. One must wait for another chapter to Weaver's adventures.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-12-02

I found this a disappointing sequel and not just because I wasn't given a cameo by my favorite 18th century politico, the Duke of Newcastle, who would have fit into the book's premise beautifully.
Liss does so much less than he could with the premise he chose and it points out the same problen in the first book of the series. He writes small, insular stories in which a big subject is reduced to a few fictional characters. He shows the mechanics of the election process, but, no matter how interesting they are, they don't address the true corruption of the politics of the time. Similarly, Benjamin doesn't really mix in high society he meets a few fictional upper middle class people.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2006-03-03

Before reading this book I recommend you read Liss' first book "A Conspiracy of Paper." The first book will introduce you to Benjamin Weaver and London in the early 1700's. In both his books Liss displays an uncanny abilty to weave history with fiction. One can feel through the authors first person detailed descriptions the grit, grime and smell of that time and place. Both books smoothly moves one through intricate plot and unforgetable characters. Both books are page turners. A highly recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars A Breathless Spectacle.......2005-10-26

In this sequel to "A Conspiracy of Paper," framed for a murder and sentenced to hang, ex-pugilist and now "thief-taker" Benjamin Weaver, The Lion of Judah, escapes from Newgate Prison and sets out to clear his name. Weaver's quest takes him on a tour of London's seamy and genteel sides with scarcely a moment for either Weaver or the reader to catch his breath. This is a world of bought judges, crooked elections, racketeering gangs, exploitation, deceit, sedition, and filth that truly lives up to the novel's title. It is nothing resembling Boswell's and Samuel Johnson's London, but is instead a dystopian view of an often glorified time. Free, but in constant danger, Weaver hides in plain view and disguises himself as a West Indian planter. He then moves back and forth between "genteel society" and his own identify in his attempts to unravel the mystery and save himself. This leads to his peripheral participation in both sides of a parliamentary election campaign where corruption, money, brutality, and treason rule in what a character describes as "A Spectacle of Corruption." However, this is not a dark novel. It is instead more picaresque with abundant humor, adventure, and romance to offset the bleak society portrayed. Cast adrift and surrounded by human sharks, Weaver must live by his wits with the assistance of his friend Elias. His cousin and lost love, Miriam, also returns in this book, only to have left Jewish society to marry a character key to the story. Weaver does not overly despair because he finds a new love interest, and wonders at one fleeting point if he could remain in his new identity forever. Nevertheless, Weaver realizes his position is tenuous and fated to always be at the fringes of society. Although a sequel, "Spectacle of Corruption is virtually a stand-alone novel, but to fully appreciate the setting, "A Conspiracy of Paper" should be read first. The author, David Liss, definitely avoided the sophomore jinx, and there are many possibilities for future adventures of Benjamin Weaver.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining and educational.......2005-04-01

Ben Weaver is back and in more trouble than before to solve a new mystery upon which his life depends.
The story delves into fascinating aspects of the British election process in 1722, with the scandals, powerplays and corruption; and almost 300 years later, we can see not much has changed. I like a book that both educates and entertains.
The author has a talent of taking a topic in a slice of history that may not seem on the outset interesting, but in the telling of the story the author shines in his clever plotlines, entertaining characters, uncovering sardonic historical intrigue.

Perennial favorite Debbie Macomber does what she does best in 16 Lighthouse Road, introducing fans to the scenic Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove, Washington, and its panoply of characters, including family court judge Olivia Lockhart who makes news when she denies the divorce petition of Cecilia and Ian Randall. Decreeing that the young couple had not tried hard enough to make their relationship work following the tragic death of their newborn daughter, Olivia's decision brings her to the attention of recent Cedar Cove arrival, newspaper editor Jack Griffin. And Jack's attentions are not entirely unwelcome for the long-divorced Olivia. In addition to her continued involvement in Cecilia and Ian's ongoing negotiations, Olivia's life is further complicated by her mother, Charlotte, her daughter, Justine, and her best friend, Grace, as they struggle with the difficult situations life tosses their way. Charlotte becomes enmeshed in trying to solve a mystery left to her by a mute stroke victim she befriends just before he dies. Justine has found the perfect man for her, one who shares her ambitions and thoughts on relationships, but why does she keep thinking about the boy she knew in high school who has grown into quite a man? And Grace's husband, Dan, has disappeared--again--and Grace has no idea where he is and when or if he'll be back. The multiple story lines and numerous relationships make reading at times challenging, but Macomber fans, old and new, will stand up and cheer as the prolific author lodges her protest against the disposable personal relationships all too common today. --Alison Trinkle

    Book Description

    Olivia Lockhart

    16 Lighthouse Road

    Cedar Cove, Washington

    Dear Reader,

You don't know me yet, but in a few hours that's going to change. You see, I'm inviting you to my home and my town of Cedar Cove because I want you to meet my family, friends, and neighbors. Come and hear their stories -- maybe even their secrets!

I have to admit that my own secrets are pretty open. My marriage failed some years ago, and I have a rather . . . difficult relationship with my daughter, Justine. Then there's my mother, Charlotte, who has plenty of opinions and is always willing to share them.

Here's an example: I'm a family court judge and she likes to drop in on my courtroom. Recently I was hearing a divorce petition. In Charlotte's view, young Cecilia and Ian Randall hadn't tried hard enough to make their marriage work -- and I agreed. So I rendered my judgement: Divorce Denied.

Well, you wouldn't believe the reaction! Thanks to an article by Jack Griffin, the editor of our local paper (and a man I wouldn't mind seeing more of!), everyone's talking.

Cedar Cove -- people love it and sometimes they leave it, but they never forget it!

    See you soon . . .

    Olivia

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-08-11

I could not put this book down it is that good. The way Ms. Macomber weaves the story lines of the characters is fantastic. I feel as though I know each character and can hardly wait to see what happens next.

In addition, I can truly visualize Cedar Cove and want to visit in person!

    I highly recommend this title/series

This is the second series of Ms. Macomber's that I am reading, she is fast becoming my favorite author.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful new series by Ms. Macomber.......2007-06-05

In this new series, Ms. Macomber introduces us to a new series. The series takes place in Cedar Cove, Washington, a scenic little town where the people are interesting and their stories could be real. The series follows the people who live in the title address and the characters they interact with. In this book we meet Olivia Lockhart, who lives at 16 Lighthouse Road. Olivia is a family court judge who makes news when she denies a prenuptial agreement dissolution for a couple, Cecilia and Ian Randall, who are seeking a divorce after the tragic death of their newborn daughter. We also meet Olivia's mother, Charlotte who makes friends with a stroke victim, Olivia's daughter Justine who is in a relationship with a much older man who is also drawn to an old schoolmate. We meet Grace, Olivia's best friend, who is dealing with the disappearance of her husband and the newly arrived newspaper editor Jack Griffin. Olivia finds herself drawn to Jack and they start to see one another. As they work through their relationship, we also get an inside view to many other relationships at work through the town.

Ms. Macomber draws us into a wonderful new world where the people jump off the page at you and are extremely likeable. I enjoyed the first book to the series and enjoyed meeting all the new characters. As Ms. Macomber leaves us wanting more with the other storylines, I am quite glad to say that Ms. Macomber continues with many more books in the series, including 74 Seaside Avenue, which releases in August of 2007. I have placed this book in my "keep library" with the rest of this series and would encourage anyone who enjoys a good, contemporary, series to pick this book, and the rest of the series, up.

5 out of 5 stars Macomber creates a series classic.......2006-11-23

As a relative newbie to the works of Debbie Macomber, i have to say, she has yet to disappoint me. With this novel, the first in her Ceder Cove series, she has made me a devoted fan for life. I literally sat down with this book, and was unable to put it down until i was finished.

"16 Lighthouse Rd" introduces us to some incredibly memorable characters.
Olvia: Family court judge, who's torn between her feelings for the new editor of the local newspaper, and her ex.
Charlotte: Olivia's mother, who goes in search of the family of a recently decesed friend.
Grace: Olivia's best friend, who is dealing with a pregnant daughter, and the mysterious disappearence of her husband of 35 years.
Cecilia & Ian: a young married couple who struggle to deal with their demons after the death of their newborn baby
Justine, Seth & Warren: an unusual love triangle, that will definitely have you rooting for her to make the right choice.

There are many more wonderful characters here, and their interweaving storylines mesh perfectly together. All i can say is that with the Ceder Cove series, Macomber has created a wonderful family that i can't wait to visit and spend time with again.

4 out of 5 stars Easy and Heartwarming.......2006-11-14

In this first of the Cedar Cove series, easy-to-ready author Debbie Macomber introduces the reader to a Pacific Northwest town that sounds just about perfect. Cedar Cove, Washington, is a quirky blend of old-time Main Street and 21-st century real-life modern problems, in a combination that makes "16 Lighthouse Road" impossible to put down.

In this book, we meet family court judge Olivia -- whose unexpected ruling in the divorce trial of young navy couple Cecilia and Ian draws the reader right into the heart of the town. Then there is Olivia's irrascible mother Charlotte, who likes to sit in the courtroom and knit, and Olivia's dear friend Grace, whose husband is acting extremely strangely.

Just put up your feet, make a cup of tea, and try not to wish that real life had such easy solutions. This is just a delightful treat, nothing more, nothing less, just perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars .......2006-11-03

A great beginning to the series. Ian and Cecelia met and married quickly due to Cecelia's pregnancy but their baby girl died a few hours after being born. Cecelia was left to handle the birth and death alone Ian was away in the Navy and wasn't told of anything after their daughter was dead and buried. Charlotte Jefferson mets a stroke victum Tom Harding they become friends despite the fact Tom can't speak. Grace Sherman's dealing with husband who keeps disappearing on her and shutting her. Olivia's worries over her daughter Justine who's dating a man who's much older then her as much as Olivia tries to support her daughter living her own life Olivia feels Justine's making a mistake. The end left you wanting to read more.

        Book Description

The second volume in Terry Davisís celebrated coming-of-age trilogy, Mysterious Ways offers a fresh and penetrating view of how perilous it can be simply to grow up. Holden Caulfield comes to mind immediately, but Davisís protagonist, Karl Russell, travels a longer road, darkened by the death of his family, the shadow of the Vietnam War, and a mysterious malady that transforms his life.

Written in day book form, the book covers six months of the narratorís life. With its sudden descent into physical and spiritual peril, Mysterious Ways provides a startling addition to the Bildungsroman tradition in American literature: a new definition of beauty. For the swiftness and clarity of its prose, for its unique and unforgettable narrator, and for many other gifts it offers, this novel will be read for decades.

        5 out of 5 stars It'll take you places.......2004-06-03

I was honored to pick up this second volume of a sort of "trilogy." The thing that caught me about it right away was the way the turbulence of the 1960s comes across in this book. Immediately, you feel as if you're living in that time period and mingling with these characters. I think the prose in this book is flawless and it's the main reason we get to see so much into the time, places, and the character's lives. I have to admit, I was a little puzzled throughout the book with the warts and sofourth. I thought it was an intriguing part of the character and the story. I found that it's one of those books you read and then after you're finished, you know you like it but you can't put your finger on what it is you like about it. But a few weeks after you read it, the story and the characters are still in your head. That's what I found amazing about it.

        5 out of 5 stars wow...everytime........2002-02-09

where do i start? what a book! i had read vision quest in middle school and was blown away by the authors characters and the way he drew you deep into their lives and minds. well, that was nothing. mysterious ways is the best book i've ever read, hands down. the characters are wonderfully compelling, and davis' ability to put you in the middle of someplace you've never been is...almost scary. my visits to spokane, wa and other parts of the pacific northwest in davis' writing are almost more real to me than my own true memories. i've read this book 7 or more times, and i know i will read many more times before i'm done. if there was any justice, this book would have never gone out of print. if you ever happen to read this...thank you mr. davis. you've given me a wonderful gift.

5 out of 5 stars Help yourself with fibromyalgia.......2007-02-21

I have had fibromyalgia for several years, but only received my diagnosis about 14 months ago. I initially purchased "Fibromyalgia for Dummies" and "Idiots Guide to Fibromyalgia" for basic help and information. I found both of those a little too simplified for my needs. I then purchased this book, along with its companion workbook.

This book is an excellent resource with reliable information. It provides you with information and tools to make treatment and lifestyle choices that work for YOU. Medications and alternative treatments are covered briefly, but with enough information to get you started in the right direction. Just about every topic of living that is impacted by fibromyalgia is covered with things you can try to feel better. There are short occasional real-life fibromyalgia stories for inspiration, and to let you know you are not alone. Excellent techniques, suggestions, exercises, and help in general throughout. This book will not help you file for disabilty. (And fibromyalgia CAN be totally disabling for many). What it does do is guide you with proven advice, suggestions, and techniques to implement in your life, as you are able, to improve your quality of life.

I certainly have not followed every suggestion, and I am far from pain and fatigue-free from reading this book, but it has improved aspects of my life and provided me with useful information. Whenever I have a flare, I turn to this book to remind me I will feel better on some days, there are simple things I can do to feel a little better and more in control, and most of all, I am not alone. I recommend it as a trustworthy guide to improving your quality of life tiny bit by tiny bit.

I would also recommend "Natural Treatments for Fibromyalgia" by the Arthritis Foundation for reliable information on many prescription medication alternatives.

2 out of 5 stars Same Old Rehashed "Advice".......2006-10-13

If you are really brand spankin' new to FMS, you may learn something here. Otherwise look elsewhere. Something that really bugged me about this book, is that it didn't once mention anything about work and keeping a job. My FMS is so severe I cannot work and am seeking disability. I've tried everything I can possibly try also - from supplements to drugs, exercise to physical therapy, etc. The book is a big failure for not even mentioning disability. It also rehashes that tired old advice of "exercise and you'll feel better." Junk advice. Telling us the pain we feel is good pain and to fight through it. Yeah right. Some of us actually do have muscular damage from FMS and the fact that we miss out on micro-muscle repair that should be had through stage 4 sleep does indicate that we can acquire damage to our muscles. This book reads like it was written 1998 - 2000 and not updated properly to reflect new evidence and studies that have been conducted (save for mentioning of substance P and IGF-1). The book is more of a "get yourself feelin' happy" workbook. Useless for us severely impacted individuals who've already been through the medical system and back out. Its recommendation of following the food pyramid is absurd especially for those with co-morbid candidiasis (yeast and mold) problems. A book I highly recommend is "Taking Charge of Fibromyalgia: Everything You Need to Know to Manage Fibromyalgia, Fifth Edition" The only reason I give it 2 stars was for the easy to read layout of the book and the pictoral depictions of some stretches.

As others have said already, this is more a catalogue of toy plans than anything else, and the few plans they do include are incomplete. As such, it is completely useless. Do not waste your money.

I just purchased this book. And kicked myself when I got home for not reading it more thoroughly first.
The toys are attractive, and there is a diverse range of toys. However, the plans for all the toys are NOT included, it DOES feel like a catalog, and the plans that ARE there, are incomplete. They just show the exploded view, and the dimensions. There are no details on how to actually construct the toy. The process of putting all the pieces together is left up to you.
Which is fine for a moderately skilled toy-maker such as myself, but a novice would definitley have trouble.
All-in-all, was very disappointed in this book.

1 out of 5 stars more a catalog than set of plans.......1998-12-22

I looked at a copy of this book, but will freely admit that I did not buy it. Years ago I did purchase (by mail, sight unseen), a copy of the "Strom Classic Toys" that was published in 1983. I was royally offended to find that that 96 page book included 56 pages of a wordy and drawn-out kid's story that my own kids (who love books) never once sat through, and pictures of 28 individual toys and a marina complex of boats, docks, etc. There were, however, plans for only 6 of the individual toys, and only about half of the simplistic marina designs. The rest were listed as plans for sale; the whole thing felt more like a catalog than a book about building toys... This volume continues that format, with a larger proportion of plans included(20/35), but those are less than complete. Perhaps my rejection of this book was partially driven by earlier and long-lived disgust with the predecessor, but there you are.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent variety of toys and skill levels ..........1996-09-29

As a freelance draftsperson this book is one of four by Sun Designs that I had the pleasure of assisting with. 'Timeless Toys in Wood' was a true delight as was its predecessor 'Classic Toys in Wood'. 'Timeless Toys in Wood' contains 35 toys including; toys a toddler can sit on to ride and steer, sleds and wagons, several trains including the a freight train terminal depot with buildings and accessories, a wonderful set of children's play furniture, and more. The book itself contains 20 mini plans. My niece was just a small child while I was working with the protypes of these toys. She visited often and of course loved to play test them. She spent endless hours of imaginative fun having tea parties at her own little table, playing with the turn of the century style kitchen appliances, and taking her doll (not included with the Strom toys) in the stroller (included as one of the Strom toys)for strolls in the garden. Unlike some mass made toys, these stood up to the rigors of play. Along with the mini-plans included in the book you will find excellent step-by-step instructions and materials lists. Full size plans for all the toys shown in the book can be ordered directly from Sun Designs. One other thing I must mention is the just how every one of my adult family and friends loved the old time 'ice box' (refrigerator) and wanted one for their own use as a decorative piece. The authors, Richard and Janet Strombeck are some of the nicest people I have met and worked for. They are an older couple who have delighted their grandchildren as well with these toys. Their toy plans are a treasure of the heart that you may share in for your children and theirs. That is the true joy of working with these plans, the smile upon a child's face and their sounds of joy at play with them. So I'd say to all craftspersons you're bringing a little bit of Santa's workshop home with you when you buy these books for your next holiday season. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Specialized Expensive Products Needed for Many Projects.......2006-01-02

I think this book must have been commissioned by the company that makes the specialized products used in this book. Many of the more sophisticated and complex treatments use products called Aquabond, Aquatex, Aquastone, Aquacreme, Aquacolor, etc.

There are many nice paint finishes and faux techniques in this book. The chapter on stone block is pretty awesome and I like the clear instructions on how to get the color variations in the "stone." There is also a Sand Drifts technique that is gorgeous and has the look of travertine. Several of the projects involve a lot of time, which is not unexpected with a complicated technique.

Some of the techniques are old standards - striping, combing, rag rolling, using tissue paper and even torn brown kraft paper. I have never heard of Aqua products and when I looked online, it appears that it is a product sold online through Faux specialty stores. The Aquacreme often requires tinting with Aquacolors, that then requires mixing of products.

From my brief look online, I did not see any local distributors in my area and the products seem quite costly, especially considering how much might be needed to do an entire room. For example, a quart of Aquacreme at one site was $20.95 and an 8 oz bottle of Aquacolor was $15.95 (the smallest size). Because no alternatives for these specialized products were given, I am giving this book a 3 star rating. If alternatives were given that were readily available, I would have given this book a 4.

                      2 out of 5 stars overestimated.......2005-09-22

Although the book gives many projects, most of the information on "how to" is vague. Many projects require using and mixing colorants rather than using latex paint. NOT for anyone without some professional training.

Great book for it's descriptions of all aspects of the techniques, i.e. photos of tools, resources, finished rooms. Plus the examples of styles and moods they create is so varied. The authors tone is concise and to the point and consistently encouraging. No girly girl stuff. Passionate, but no fru fru. Wow! Such a deal!

The Lord techniques, while somewhat comprehensive in their scope, do not address problem areas such as, corners, edges, lap lines, problems with product drying early, the dangers of tint products near and on carpets just to mention a few.

The advertising brochure for Aqua Finishing solutions would lead one to believe that the room painted to resemble a castle was done with Aqua products when in fact it was done with dry wall compound.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait to get started!.......2001-04-23

Just looking through this book has my brain reeling with all kinds of ideas for the walls throughout my little tiny house. The ideas in this book look as good for small spaces as they will for large ones. Just reading the book, I've already picked out three techniques I want to try. The book offers a list of materials for each project, tips and a really clear explanation of all the how-to steps to complete them. I heard about this book when Gary Lord was on the Discovery Channel show Home Matters. He did the technique in Chapter 7 using tissue paper on the walls. The way he prepares for this project allows you to remove the tissue at a later date when you're ready to try something different. This had always been a concern of mine when I'd see one of these wall treatments done. After all, times change and so do peoples' tastes. Can you imagine the nightmare of scraping tissue paper off the walls? Well, this book looks like it has everything under control. I'm planning on using this particular technique on a stairway wall that has a lot of cracks in it that I haven't been able to seal permanently. If you can't fix it, camoflage it!

5 out of 5 stars Books for my Daughter.......2007-09-22

I bought my daughter's books through Amazon, instead of the campus book store. This book was one of five. I saved 50% by doing this. I would recommend Amazon to any student buying books.

                      4 out of 5 stars Storytelling/composition/shot definition.......2007-02-28

I teach a digital video class and use parts of the book to talk about principles of composition and defining different types of shots. IT is pretty general but uses lots of visual examples to explain concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2007-02-03

The book is written in textbook style with questions at the end of each chapter. I found it a fun read. There are a few good short interview pages from professionals working in the field. The author offers great references to other books for drawing and anatomy, as this book deals more with the how and why storyboards are used and like the title says Exploring Storyboarding.

                      5 out of 5 stars Really Helpful.......2006-08-03

This book teaches you important aspects about storyboarding for movies/cartoons/etc. It covers everything you can think of and gives good examples and explanations. This is good for anyone thinking about directing or storyboarding.

                      5 out of 5 stars Storyboarding.......2005-11-10

Good introduction to storyboarding with a definite direction towards media, and many specific examples. This is NOT a book on cartooning.

                          Book Description

Kenny Miller began his career as a teen idol in the 1950s, appearing in such teen films as Going Steady, The Young Guns, Surf Party, Running Wild and This Rebel Breed. He later had roles in Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, Anthony Quinn's The Buccaneer, and two movies with cult followings: I Was a Teenage Werewolf (Michael Landon's film debut) and Attack of the Puppet People. In the early 1960s Miller had the largest teen fan club in the United States. Also a singer and dancer, Miller has taken his celebrated nightclub act to capitals around the world and has appeared in numerous television shows, with an award-winning role in the ABC telefilm Night Train. This autobiography details Miller's personal and professional life and the many movies and television shows in which he appeared. The work features numerous photographs from Miller's four decade career, and a complete filmography.

5 out of 5 stars One of US who "MADE" it without losing it !.......1999-10-18

Unlike Eddie Fisher's sleazey autobiography, Ken Miller's book recalls bygone Hollywood. While he could write about the dark sides of Natalie Wood, James Dean, Sal Mineo, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Cecil B. DeMille, Connie Stevens and the death of the studio system, Mr. Miller choses the high road.

Fortunately Mr. Miller discusses the craft of acting in both big budget motion pictures and cheapo fly-by-night studios in the 1970's. His behind-the-scenes stories are funny. One highlight involves the acting debut of his pet dog, Krissy.

Ken Miller presents the professional acting craft as the way it should be...not to serious and what should be a lot of fun.

This book reflects a kind soul and a nice man.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal!.......1999-08-31

Kenny Miller has lived the Hollywood dream and writes a fascinating story of Tinseltown in its glory days. From a humble start to performances in over 22 feature films as well as steady television and musical work, Kenny is a seasoned pro who has paid his dues. Hobnobbing with the greats and near greats and having fun along the way, Miller has an insider's perspective that is a must read for anyone hoping to break into the world of entertainment. A fun read.

                          5 out of 5 stars Kenny's a Great.......1999-07-16

Kenny is a Great guy...NOT a Hollywood phoney. I hope the book does well
