"It was terribly hot the summer Mr. Robertson left town." For Amy Goodrow and her mother, Isabelle, the heat of that summer is the least of their problems. Other citizens in the New England mill town of Shirley Falls are bothered by the heat and by "other things too: Further up the river crops weren't right--pole beans were small, shriveled on the vine, carrots stopped growing when they were no bigger than the fingers of a child; and two UFOs had apparently been sighted in the north of the state." But Amy and Isabelle have a more private misery: a seemingly unbridgeable chasm has opened between this once-close mother and daughter and nothing will ever be the same again. For Amy has fallen in love with her high-school math teacher, Mr. Robertson, who has gone way beyond the bounds of propriety by encouraging the crush. When Isabelle finds out, she is horrified to realize that her anger at him is dwarfed by her rage at her own daughter for "enjoying the sexual pleasures of a man while she herself had not."

Mother-daughter novels can, by virtue of their subject matter, often seem claustrophobic, a little overwrought; Elizabeth Strout masterfully avoids this problem by placing Amy and Isabelle in the larger context of the community they inhabit. Though her main focus is on the Goodrow women, Strout often detours into the lives and thoughts of her many secondary characters: Isabelle's coworkers Dottie Brown and Fat Bev; Amy's best friend, Stacy Burrows; Stacy's ex-boyfriend, Paul Bellows; and women from Isabelle's church such as Peg Dunlap and Barbara Rawley. She also introduces a chilling frisson of menace with the unsolved abduction of a 12-year-old girl and a mysterious obscene phone-caller. Like the best of Alice Hoffman, Amy and Isabelle offers up a moving yet resolutely unsentimental portrait of people coming to terms with their lives, finding unsuspected nobility in themselves and unexpected kindness in others along the way. Elizabeth Strout has written a gem of a novel. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

National Bestseller

In her stunning first novel, Amy and Isabelle, Elizabeth Strout evokes a teenager's alienation from her distant mother—and a parent's rage at the discovery of her daughter's sexual secrets. In most ways, Isabelle and Amy are like any mother and her 16-year-old daughter, a fierce mix of love and loathing exchanged in their every glance. And eating, sleeping, and working side by side in the gossip-ridden mill town of Shirley Falls doesn't help matters. But when Amy is discovered behind the steamed-up windows of a car with her math teacher, the vast and icy distance between mother and daughter becomes unbridgeable.

As news of the scandal reaches every ear, it is Isabelle who suffers from the harsh judgment of Shirley Falls, intensifying her shame about her own secret past. And as Amy seeks comfort elsewhere, she discovers the fragility of human happiness through other dramas, from the horror of a missing child to the trials of Fat Bev, the community peacemaker. Witty and often profound, Amy and Isabelle confirms Elizabeth Strout as a powerful new talent.

Download Description

With compassion, humor, and striking insight, Amy and Isabelle explores the secrets of sexuality that jeopardize the love between a mother and her daughter. Amy Goodrow, a shy high school student in a small mill town, falls in love with her math teacher, and together they cross the line between understandable fantasy and disturbing reality. When discovered, this emotional and physical trespass brings disgrace to Amy's mother, Isabelle, and intensifies the shame she feels about her own past. In a fury, she lashes out at her daughter's beauty and then retreats into outraged silence. Amy withdraws, too, and mother and daughter eat, sleep, and even work side by side but remain at a vast, seemingly unbridgeable distance from each other.

This conflict is surrounded by other large and small dramas in the town of Shirley Falls -- a teenage pregnancy, a UFO sighting, a missing child, and the trials of Fat Bev, the community's enormous (and enormously funny and compassionate) peacemaker and amateur medical consultant. Keeping Isabelle and Amy as the main focus of her sharp, sympathetic eye, Elizabeth Strout attends to them all. As she does so, she reveals not only her deep affection for her characters, both serious and comic, but her profound wisdom about the human condition in general. She makes us care about these extraordinary ordinary people and makes us hope that they will find a way out of their often self-imposed emotional exile.

3 out of 5 stars A Typical Mother & Daughter Book ..........2007-07-13

When I bought this book several years ago, it was the most-talked about book in the online book clubs. I never had a chance to pick it up till recently when it's my goal to get rid of books that have been sitting there for ages. I recall vaguely that I did pick it up at one time and put it back down, looking for something else to read. I had the same feeling this time again, but stuck with it to see if all the four/five stars are warranted. No. Not really.

For one thing, this book is vaguely vulgar ~~ mentioning body habits that may be normal, but do I really need to hear about them? It isn't erotic but more depressing especially the sex scenes in this book are pathetic. Has anyone ever heard of leaving things to the imagination? Why do authors feel compelled to describe every single thing? Anyhow, those are the negatives of this book and in my opinion, doesn't necessarily add to the story, but detract from the story.

This book is about a mother and daughter who live together, who work together and do everything together ~~ how can two people who spend the majority of their lives together know so little about one another? Isabelle carries the secret of her past close to her heart. She also yearns for her boss, a man who caught her daughter in the car with her math teacher, Mr. Robertson. There's Amy, the daughter, who loved the attention of her teacher ... and you know how it goes ~~ turns out the teacher was just using her, and so on. That relationship almost destroyed the relationship she has with her mother.

Yes, there are other townsfolks in this novel, with little bits of their stories scattered throughout the book. There's Dottie, who had an operation and found out her husband was having an affair. There's Fat Bev, who works with Amy and Isabelle. There's a deacon's wife who is having an affair with the college psychologist. There's Amy's best friend who got pregnant with her boyfriend's child. There's even a case of a missing little girl, who was kidnapped in the middle of the afternoon from her house. All this are tied in together to show that life continues.

If you like these kinds of books ~~ then this one is for you. But after reading dozens of books on this same theme, there are others out there that are much better and more gratifying. This one seems to have fallen short of the mark ~~ which is too bad because I have heard great things about this author.

3 out of 5 stars Yup, a mother and a daughter. .......2006-09-12

Sure, a story about a mother and her daughter. The tangible relationship is not so hard to imagine as a daughter myself, however, the downside of the story, was not so much the story but the writing itself.

The story seemed dry, but I think it was the style as some of the characters I grew to love despite their descriptions and scense.
I am wondering if the movie, with Elizabeth Shue, would have been a bettet choice with my time...

4 out of 5 stars Lives of Desperate Fantasy (4.3 *s).......2005-10-23

Strout has written a riveting and distressing story of the tortured mother-daughter relationship of single mother Isabelle and teenage daughter Amy and more generally of life in a small mill town in New England, with its obvious social pecking order. The story is anchored in the interactions among the working class women working in the mill office, where Isabelle is the secretary to the manager. The extreme heat and dryness of this particular summer seem to have created a climate conducive for the unsettling events that occurred that summer.

Isabelle leads a desperate and lonely existence with her daughter on the outskirts of town. Isabelle has not only constructed a fictitious past, but also is fanatical about her perceived image while imaging a relationship with her boss, despite no demonstrated interest on his part. This ingenuousness creates an unfocused contempt by Amy for her mother. Amy is so desperate for a dose of reality in her life that she is taken in by the kindness and wisdom of a new math teacher at school.

The pace of the book is as slow as the nearly dried up river running down the center of the town which the author uses to great advantage in her ample descriptions of the town and allowing her characters to establish themselves. Though this well-written book is disturbing, the events of the summer do allow Isabelle and Amy to begin moving beyond their personal and mother-daughter limitations.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting examination of a mother/daughter relationship.......2005-09-05

A story about a mother-daughter relationship and some weird and jarring things that happen to change their relationship. I found it interesting enough to finish (which isn't always the case). While I can't say it was stupendous, I can say it was very down to earth and really got into the characters minds to the point where you could believe what they believe and want what they wanted, even when it was coming from an obviously skewed point of view.

3 out of 5 stars Male point of view: wonderful writing; predictable pitfalls........2005-07-21

Actually 3.5 stars. As many have already noted, it is hard to believe that this is Elizabeth Strout's first work. It is so well done, created in technicolor, and digitally mastered. The imagery is splendid, whether her words depict the strength of marigolds, the changing of winter to spring, the daily noise of the mill, or how light falls on a room in a house. The characters are lovable, well, many of them. They come across as human, real, people we are all familiar with. And they have a part in the deliberately-slow-moving plot, coming onto the scene, and touching the heart of the reader. At least the women do.

Not the men. Is it just the grrrl fashion, or is for real in Ms. Strout's eyes? Most of the men depicted have one thing on their mind going into the story, and thus are faulted in the end as having one thing on their mind, whether it is Paul, Joshua, Mr. Robertson, Lenny, Wally, Jake. Even the men who kidnapped and killed the little girl were probably tainted. Why else is that piece there? Avery is somehow at fault for not having that one thing, for Isabelle at least. Isabelle's dad might be the only positive man, but is also a fool for having Jake as a best friend. Moreover, there is little chance for reconciliation, Wally and Dottie aside. Dad dies, Jake dies, Avery dies. I am happy Paul didn't kill himself in his speeding car. Maybe he can reconcile with Stacy, and try to change.

My comments won't bring me a high "helpful ratio" rate, but you all know where I stand.

Murder One is not written with the verve of some of the other books in Writer's Digest's Howdunit series, but if you need to know what kind of car serial killers prefer to drive (Volkswagens) or what happens to the contents of a human skull when subjected to intense heat (they "boil and explode much like a hard-boiling egg that is left unattended"), this is the place to turn. Mauro V. Corvasce and Joseph R. Paglino, investigators for the Monmouth County, New Jersey, prosecutor's office, provide the inside scoop on murders involving narcotics, gangs, organized crime, families, strangers, crimes of passion, lust, sex, and more. --Jane Steinberg

3 out of 5 stars An Addition To Your Reference Library, Not A Stand-Alone.......2001-01-06

Murder One contains a lot of case studies of actual crimes. It also details motives and methods on all sorts of crimes including drug distribution, parents who kill their children and serial killers.

While this book is a great quick reference book, solid crime writing requires a little more depth than this book offers. It's worth having, though, to get you started on the right track.

4 out of 5 stars ýMurder Oneý is a good, broad, writerýs guide to homicide........1999-09-24

"Murder One" accomplishes its purpose: It is a good writer's guide to homicide. Its breadth dictates lack of deep detail. It covers murder: weapons, business murders, narcotics murders, gang murders, organized-crime murders, contract murders, crime-of-passion murders and thrill/lust, sexual, mass, serial, vehicular and bizarre murders.

All books, including "Murder One", I have read in the "Howdunit Series" have been incredibly helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written book........1999-07-31

The main drawback of this book is that the poor chapters about different types of homicide are not followed by any further literature.

Book Description

For Allie, putting on the madcap that Jerry borrowed was a very big mistake. The psychosis itself was quite conventional, but it didn't go away when she took the madcap off, so the Brain Police took over leaving her with a choice - go to jail as a mind criminal or become a mindplayer.

4 out of 5 stars An intelligent, resonant Head-Trip............2005-08-11

This medium-sized 'sci-fi implosion' novel could give you a bit of a head-ache. But it will be a good one; a worthwhile one. It comments on our present, shared reality, through the wary portrayal of a different one. I had read 'Tea from an Empty Cup' and was expecting another wry Cadigan 'glimpse with insights' into a more credible VR future, where young kids and cyberpunks mess around with technology and come up gasping....and where negative aspects of technology (abuse?) are encountered and (if somewhat slightly) dramatised....I was aware of her weaknesses with this other book; that she sacrfices truly involving/unsettling story-telling with a reliance on a cynical observational style which also thins her other characters....Although, this she counters with some great ideas and unexpected surprises (two more vital ingredients for sci-fi?)....plus clever humour, weaned from the exclusive use of such a style.

Well, I was right and wrong with Mindplayers. It is her usual tone; a smartass narrator that enables her to be world-weary towards advanced technology that is threatening our precious ideas about personal identity and humanity, and is full of addictive undertones and dependencies (proper, relevant sci-fiction and 'Cyberpunk'). For 1987, this automatically makes it interesting and ensures it an important, accessible (and more realistic than others) position in the canon....But what was really impressive was the way, in Mindplayers, she actually side-steps technology by using the conceit of hooking up mind to mind, and presenting a new future where this form of telepathy (albeit machine-enabled) is changing things. She is thus free in the book, to focus her attentions on the freedom of being perfectly lucid in other people's mental lives, and showing off her clearly knowledgable understanding of psychology.....Cadigan then achieves this thoroughly, convincingly and entertainingly.... She therefore explores virtual reality but in an intimate and psychological way, with warnings and suggestions about our identities and realities, and the way they are influenced and shaped. Her character is someone who is attempting to directly heal other people's internal lives or psychoses, although carrying the weight of her own, and this produces interesting results with relevance for how actual psychologists attempt this. Her well-honed use of a 'deadpan', emotionless tone becomes highly suited, but can still occasionally do little justice to some of the ideas, that become revelations more to herself as a writer than to us as readers. Much less so however in this work.

Ultimately, we are shown the dangers of influence, of identities altered for survival, of too much dependence on others eroding our own identity...and this is the strength of the book, along with other sci-fi assets, such as good background features and settings such as the Park and the concept of 'reality affixing', and such as mindplaying with a dead mind. This latter case is one of the more scary warnings of the imagined technology allowing for such a strong level of intrusion.

Revelations come through experiences, and those shown to us in this book, and in the rather quick crescendo at the end, which leaves us strongly reminded about the difference between reality and our 'state of existence'. The book resonates as its own mental experience, and is highly stimulating and great for meditation, for assisting us in imagining the reality - or future - it portrays. And it's a very possible future, although perhaps more indirectly.

5 out of 5 stars Pat Cadigan is Awesome.......2004-07-28

Mindplayers is one of the best books I have ever read, sci-fi or otherwise. Pat Cadigan has a brilliant imagination. She tries her best to keep up with it. Her writing is a bit haphazard, but very good overall. Mindplayers is set in the future, where Mindplay has changed society for better or worse. Differing degrees of Mindplay require professionals to assist those engaging in it. One of these professionals is Deadpan Allie (love that play on words). Allie is a former layabout who has been recruited to become a professional Mindplayer. The strange characters she meets and weird situations she is in mesmerize the reader. There is also a lot of philosophy for the reader to chew on.

Recommended for sci-fi/fantasy fans. No graphic sex or violence. I also recommend Dervish is Digital, another sci-fi treasure by Cadigan.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but lacking.......2002-12-03

Pat Cadigan definately has some great ideas for cyberpunk - mindplayers, custom personalities, all sorts of neat stuff - but she doesn't make a cohesive novel out of them. Each chapter or part of the book is its own little story; there's never any real tension or suspense, or plot. There was no real climax to the story, just a rather weak and contrived personal realization by the protagonist.
This would be okay if there was more depth to the setting. Beyond some nifty ideas, there is almost no detail. I don't really know what the characters look like, or what their surroundings are. It was like being blind. More detail and depth all around would have helped immensely. During the mindplaying sequences (which are very frequent) I could barely understand what was going on. It relies heavily on mental symbolism which isn't adequately explained. Her character's voice in the 1st person narrative is a good one, she just needs some more imagery to gloss over the weak plotting.
Greg Bear's Queen of Angels is a better book covering similar ideas.
If I could I'd give another half a star for all the gizmos, but the flaws count for a lot. Still, recommended as light reading!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading!.......2002-03-15

Pat Cadigan's MindPlayers was one of the first "sci-fi" books I read, and I fell in love with it. All the characters have their own unique quirks and personality traits, but my favorite two characters were the twins, Dolby and Dolan. Each time I read Mindplayers, I find something that I missed the last time I read the book. The creative aspects of the characters is the best part of the story. It is noteworthy that almost every character within the book has an altered appearance; no one seems to be as they were at birth. Onionheads are especially interesting, although they get only a mention. Pat Cadigan has had to endure television and movie ripoffs of some of the details within Mindplayers, but this book remains a classic and the first of its kind.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Great Works Of Cyberpunk Science Fiction.......2001-11-06

Pat Cadigan made her mark in the 1980's as one of the finest writers of science fiction with her legendary short fiction and excellent novels such as "Mindplayers". Long out of print, this slender tome is one of the finest works of cyberpunk fiction; happily it is now back in print. Cadigan writes edgy, streetwise prose as carefully crafted as any by William Gibson; however, she does a better job in creating vivid, fascinating characters such as Deadpan Allie, the protagonist of "Mindplayers". Without a doubt, this could be a great psychological science fiction thriller akin to "Dark City" if anyone in Hollywood was clever enough to acquire the film rights to Cadigan's superb first novel.

        Book Description

Attention to detail, small gestures with profound meaning, brilliantly intuitive . . . these are the hallmarks of Japanese art, and they apply equally to the Japanese art of sex. Here for the first time is a practical guide that shows you how to use the ancient and modern Japanese sexual practices of court ladies, courtesans, and geisha to spark romance and deliver an erotic "floating world" of pleasure to you and your partner.

Japanese sex is not about the orgasm. In Japan, honest and healthy sex is at one with a love of nature and purity. But it is often the woman who knows more and cares more about extending passion into the realm of spirituality, using all of the senses. In The Japanese Art of Sex you'll practice aromatherapy, bathing and erotic meditation for calming; explore the art of conversation to stimulate the mind and expose the heart, roleplay to fulfill your fantasies; and, finally, use your fingers and tongue to tease and caress before choosing a position to make love.

Chapters with titles like "The Nine Points of Beauty," "Iki: The Art of Cool," and "Bathhouse Games and Sexy Cuisine" lead you step by step through over a thousand years of Japanese explorations into sex and love. While explicit, the discussions are tasteful and resolutely nonexploitive.

For like-minded modern Western women, eager to explore new ways of lovemaking and pleasure-giving, this book will be a welcome respite from all the other manuals that emphasize technique over the art of sex.

Jina Bacarr has written business books and magazine -articles, and she has coauthored a novel about Japan. She was previously the Japan-based consultant on KCBS-TV and MSNBC, and currently has her own weekly radio show, "On the Wild Side: The Spicier Side of Books." She lives in Southern California.

In "The Japanese Art of Sex," Jina Bacarr suggests the ways of a slow, steady, sensual seduction of your man, drawing on centuries of Japanese inspiration from the geisha, as well as from other Japanese practitioners of the pleasure trade. She must have a thousand tips and suggestions in this book. If you use only 50 that most appeal to you, your satisfied, happy man will be too sexually exhausted to ever leave you. I am totally seduced by this book.

This is one of my favorite books to cook from. It's filled with wonderful and diverse recipes from across different Mexican regions. This is the real Mexico, from Chiapas to Guadalajara to Puebla. Many people harbor a misconception about Mexican food, thinking it means only spicy beans and rice dishes. Marge Poore smashes that stereotype and brings us dozens of flavorful meals, rich sauces, and savory dishes, most of which aren't "spicy" at all - only incredibly delicious! Everyone in my family, from my aging mother to teen-aged nephews have enjoyed and appreciated the unique blend of herbs and flavors that are used whenever I prepare one of these excellent, simple recipes. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook.......2001-11-14

This is by far my favorite cookbook -- I've tried literally dozens of the recipes and each has been wonderful. I've had several dinner parties and cooked holiday meals using these recipes exclusively. The Mexican Gazpacho; Pork Stew with Plaintains, Sweet Potatoes and Pineapple; and Chicken Breasts with Creamy Pumpkin Seed Sauce are among my family/friends' favorites. This is a great book, I think, for beginners as well as experienced cooks.

            Book Description

Matteo Pericoli began his spectacular drawing of Manhattan in 1998. Manhattan Unfurled was published in October 2001 and was quickly embraced by New York City and the entire country. In this new version for young people, the drawing is bound into two sections (East Side and West Side) in an unusual and eye-catching new format. Pericoli adds simple text, and hand-drawn labels, telling young readers how he came to create his drawing (the journey includes boat rides, a motorcycle, and hundreds of photographs). He also enourages kids to see—and draw—a place in a whole new way. “Draw everything,” he tells them, “and you’ll know a place as you never did before.” A wonderful tribute to Manhattan, to cities, and to thinking like an artist.

Praise for Matteo Pericoli’s Manhattan Unfurled (Random House adult trade):

“Pericoli has fixed a moment of the ever-shifting skyline, and done so with delicacy and authority.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Pericoli’s drawing is at once monumental and gentle . . . together the buildings seem almost to be swaying softly in a chorus line along the Hudson.”—The New Yorker

“Seen through [Pericoli’s] eyes, Manhattan takes on the quality of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.”—Vogue

4 out of 5 stars It's all about first use........2007-08-20

The book helped me learn several key things about marks [names]. (1) Be the very first one to use your mark. If you don't know that you are the first one then the book will help you get started with your research. If you aren't the first one to use your mark then someone else may have superior rights and sue the heck out of you. Federal or State registration is fairly important to protect your mark but is secondary in the big scheme of things because it's all about first use. (2) Fighting somebody who is using your mark that has a lot more money than you is probably a losing deal in the long run. (3) You don't need a lawyer to register your mark. (4) If your mark has the look of or sounds a lot like another person's mark you may be in big trouble.

The book is more about how to find and keep a valid mark than about "legal care for your business and product name." The book is very helpful about the Federal registration process, especially about the proper use of disclaimers. The book falls a little short in exactly how to register your mark internationally, before or after registering in the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference book for the rest of us........2007-01-12

Nolo Press once again did not disappoint me. I was looking for basic information about the Trademark process and they provided a description in "plain-English" that walked me through the process, defined terms, even offered some advice on how to handle disputes.

            Good reference for us non-lawyers!

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction for the Non-Professional.......2005-11-10

This book is an excellent introduction to the concepts of trademarks. It's in its seventh edition, so it's been around long enough to get errors worked out and up to date enough to reflect the latest legal changes.

This book is a good introduction to trademark law. It seems to fit into two categories. If you're working for a big company (or a company that wants to grow big) use this for its information value and then go get professional trademark help from a specialist attorney.

If you're a little company like me, this is probably all that you need. For a dozen years I've owned the domain name [...]. I got a nasty letter from the attorney for Doubleday Book Clubs saying that I was infringing on their domain name of [...] and that they wanted me to stop. I wrote back to them and said that I wasn't infringing because I didn't run a book club, my pages didn't look at all like theirs, etc. I never heard from them again.

Mr. Elias, if you happen to read this, in your next edition, I'd like to see you expand Chapter 2 on domain names. They haven't replaced trademarks, but are becomming more and more important.

4 out of 5 stars A VERY HANDY REFRENCE AND OVERVIEW A GOOD STARTING POINT........2005-10-16

To my knowledge, the best, simple, handy reference for Trademark available.

It's very useful in planning and getting an overview.

I give the book a 4 because anyone who can take the complexities and vagaries of legalese and make a useful book deserves it. I can not give them a 5 because they did not (and to be fair perhaps could not) address more of the vagaries of conflicting use and claims of trademark - perhaps that is another book.

Very good overall, you won't be dissatisfied especially if used in conjunction with further state and web research.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful background information for laymen.......2003-12-25

This is a great resource for marketing professionals, entrepreneurs, and non-trademark attorneys to understand the basics of trademark law. However, this book is no substitute for professional legal advice from an experienced trademark attorney when it comes to protection a property that is becoming scarce and more valuable as business migrates into the online world.

                Book Description

A professional dancer's career, like a professional athlete's, lasts an average of 10 to 15 years. Once the prime years of physical prowess have passed retirement is inevitable, but dancers still have many years of adult life ahead. The challenge for many is making the transition into a new career.

Motivated by her own career transition, author Nancy Upper interviewed former ballet dancers who made successful transitions into new careers after they stopped performing.

Part 1 of the book features dancers who remained in ballet-related careers. Part 2 features four individuals who chose careers outside the field of dance. Part 3 focuses on dancers who pursued non-dance careers that help dancers and other performing artists. Appendices include the marketable qualities dancers develop as a result of their training, career transition tips, transition resources, and a graph mapping the transition process.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide.......2005-01-05

Nancy Upper's Ballet Dancers In Career Transition holds such a hefty price tag for a standard-sized paperback that primarily libraries specializing in dance collections will want to spring for it - but any such library should not hesitate to make the purchase, being as it's one of the few to address the professional dancer's changing career options. A professional dancer lasts from 10-15 years - then it's time for retirement, even though many years of adult life are ahead. Upper made her own career transition and uses her own experiences to relate her challenges, adding interviews with other former ballet dancers who made successful transitions into new careers. An essential guide, highly recommended for ballet book collections.
