Aunt Dimity Revisited.......2007-07-02
In this 8th outing. Lori and Bill are summoned to Hailesham - Derek Harris' family home for a working weekend / vacation. Lori's knows that this will not be the relaxing vacation she had hoped for when upon their arrival a large topiary is set ablaze and poison pen letters start to appear. More is found out about Derek's family and Nell is still as irrepressible as ever. There was something very familiar about this book, like I had read part of it before. Very reminiscent of Aunt Dimity Beats the Devil.
Very light and fluffy, but fun.......2006-07-04
This is very much a cozy. It's fun, quick reading, and very, very light. I finished the book in an hour and a half. But what a fun hour and a half it was!
For a light book, the mystery was actually pretty tight and well-planned. I did not predict the killer correctly, nor did I catch on to his/her methods. There's a bit of a supernatural slant (Aunti Dimity is deceased, but communicates with Lori via her diary), but it's not silly at all. Lori is a sweet, fun character and her friends are real gems. Aunt Dimity is wise, caustic, and loving and sometimes scolds Lori for jumping to conclusions. But she's always there (in the ethereal sense) for Lori and guides her like a mother figure would.
If you want a spellbinding, heavy mystery, this is not it. But if you want to be entertained for a couple of hours and laugh at loud and feel good at the end, this book (and series) is for you.
Aunt Dimity Takes a Holiday.......2006-04-07
How I love these wonderful, cozy mysteries by Nancy Atherton. I have come to love and feel as though I know her wonderful characters. In this installation of the Aunt Dimity series we again are able to get a glimpse of Derek and Emma Harris' life, as we were in Aunt Dimity and the Duke.
When a "family reunion" is to take place at Derek's father's home, both he and Emma are a bit reluctant to go. Derek because he hasnt spoken to his father in 20 years and Emma because she feels out of place in such a grand setting. However, they present themselves, along with Lori and Bill and find a mystery that needs solving.
With Reginald at her side, and Bill busy lawyering, Lori is determined to discover who is threatening one of the guests. When it becomes more than threats, Lori must up her investigation to save a new friend, and to help Derek find the truth about his past and his future within his family.
These books are such a lovely afternoon read. Not too very involved, but just enough so to keep me coming back. Wonderfully written, they allow you to just enjoy the book without thinking too much. I look forward to the next in the series.
Disappointing.......2004-08-02
Having read all of the previous books in this series, I must admit that I have been one of those complaining that, in every book, Lori Shephard meets some handsome man and must fight tooth & nail against the temptation of having a fling with him. Well, that almost happens in this book, but a friendship develops instead. The problem is that the character that would normally tempt her was not fleshed out enough; in fact, that is the problem with most of the characters in this book - most are stereotypical.
I also had two problems with this entry: one, Lori suspects someone of doing the mischieviousness that is impossible. Any regular reader of this series knows the person she suspects would never do anything like the crimes in the book. And two, the manner in which the culprit manages to get away with his/her 'crimes' for so long is slightly ridiculous.
Not for sure if I will be picking up the next book in the series or not.
Great Weekend Mystery.......2003-12-21
This book is a good mystery. The plot is always complex, but not confusing, and very well written. These stories are perfectly situated in England. The titles of these Aunt Dimity series are a bit misleading. By the title I thought it would be about a little lady who travels and gets involved in little mysteries, like Agatha Christie's Poirot and also her Miss Marple, etc. The stories are about a woman named Lori, who is married to a lawyer husband (who travels a lot) and has two little twin baby boys. In this particular story, she is invited, by her neighbor and friend, Emma, to come with her to meet her husband's wealthy English family (who she doesn't know existed). Her husband is the lawyer for Emma's in-laws, and so Lori is invited and goes with both her friend and her husband. On their arrival a sculpted bush (to look like a turtledove) is in flames. Soon, anonymous poison pen threat notes start arriving to a certain person in the book, and Lori has to figure out who's writing the notes, etc. Aunt Dimity was a rich eclectic woman. She was the best friend of Lori's mother, and having no family of her own to pass on the huge trust fund she had accumulated over the years, she passed it on to Lori when she died, along with her little stone cottage, set in the heart of the English countryside, and a blue bound journal. Through this journal she communicates with Lori, even after her death. This part is kind of strange, though I say it myself, but adds a bit of quirkiness to the book that is charming. This book is a great (shorter) mystery novel, a great way to just cuddle up, read, and relax during the weekend.

Book Description
She doesn't jog, she doesn't know karate, and she doesn't pass a bakery without a slight detour. She's Desiree Shapiro, and she's got a big enough heart to help an ex-boyfriend find out who killed his blushing new bride.
Customer Reviews:
silly, but addicting.......2005-10-01
I enjoy the Desiree books. They could not be confused with great literature, but the character is endearing. The fact that every single detail of her day is described allows the reader to feel a closeness that makes this series of books fun to follow. Also everybody loves to see a mystery solved.
Could have been a lot better.......2003-03-10
I enjoyed this book to some extent but it could have been better. It was very slow and the mystery played out like any other mystery story - in other words, predictable.
What I liked about it was the plucky heroine, Desiree Shapiro. She had spirit and guts.
The Undesirable Desiree.......2001-08-24
P.I. Desiree Shapiro's rat of an ex-lover is accused of pushing his wife under a subway train, and Desiree sets out to prove him innocent. I won't give away the shatteringly unsurprising ending, which the book ploughs toward without benefit of any real complications to the plot.
This bumbling fool of an investigator begins by telling all the suspects right off the bat that they're suspected of being drug runners and murderers. This immediately sets all the suspects on their guard. It might work as an apparently guileless technique, used by someone like Columbo, who is crazy like a fox. But Desiree isn't crazy (which might be interesting), she's merely boring and dense.
So-called mysteries of this ilk are responsible for the term "light reading" being applied to the genre. But light reading this is not, as the reader quickly becomes bogged down in a mire of tedious detail. How could an intelligent person possibly be interested in Desiree's vacillations between one dress and another, or her hair problems? While mystery novelists like Robert Parker and Janet Evanovich dress their characters for the reader, there's a purpose to it. It both reveals character and sets the visual scene. In this book, what warrants a phrase occupies paragraphs. Details like this occupy in excess of half the book.
The writing is abysmally sloppy. When her creepy ex tells her of his wife's death, he "blew his nose once or twice." Well, was it once, or twice? Later the "once or twice" phrase is repeated in another scene. There are many more examples or poor writing, all too boring and irritating to mention.
With all the good mysteries out there to read (so many mysteries, so little time), it's a shame that anyone would waste time on this one. The reader is left wishing wholeheartedly that someone would push Desiree under a train.
If you need a heroine, Desiree's for you!.......2000-01-29
I've been a faithful reader of Ms. Eichler's books since their inception and this is one of the best. I love Desiree's sense of humor, her acceptance of self (she's not sylph-like and doesn't mind). She's an everywoman, who knows what's important: shopping, Hagen Daas(sic), oh yeah, and catching the bad guy/girl. At least now I know when her next book's coming out - February. HURRY UP, FEBRUARY!
Witty, funny, and enjoyable!.......1999-09-07
This is my first book of the Desiree Shapiro series, and now my mission is to find all the others. Desiree is exactly what I look for in a female private eye - funny, self-deprecating and really on the ball. This is a delightful, quick read.

Book Description
The startling Vietnam War series continues, with Americans portrayed as rabbits and Vietnamese as cats. Our hero, Sgt. "Perky" Perkins, and his buddies Bota and Rats continue their recon mission deep in the bloody jungles of Vietnam. In this volume Perky begins to see the moral complexity of the war. He witnesses the French, Chinese, and Japanese military involvement in the war, and beneath it all, he sees the suffering of the Vietnamese civilians. While he and his buddies are on R&R in Saigon, Rats gets in trouble with an MP and ends up on a forced military leave of absence. He goes to visit his family in New York City, where (by witnessing various anti-war demonstrations and talking with his childhood friends) he gets a taste of how the American public feels about the war. While Rats is away, Perky and Bota are captured by the Viet Cong and held as prisoners of war. Rats hurries back to Vietnam to join the rescue effort. Perky is a real hero and is loved and respected by his American buddies and their South Vietnamese counterparts. They are not going to let Perky and Bota go down without giving it their all!

Customer Reviews:
Generally Dissappointing Workout Book.......2007-06-26
Upon opening the book, one thing is immediately apparent: its poor production quality. The book is all black & white, and while that itself isn't a fault, it proves to bring the book down when paired with its amateur photography.
Photographs in the book are used generally only to show the correct posture for exercises. Because the book is in black & white, it is not easy to discern exactly how to position oneself for the exercises. Had the photographs been in color, this would have been simpler. The quality of the photographs is appalling: I'd venture to say I could take better photographs myself with a digital camera.
In most exercise magazines, photography of exercises features the person performing it in front of white background. This book however summons the notion that someone went out and shot these photos in quick succession without any attention to detail. Additionally, there are no diagrams or illustrations of any sort on how to do the exercises, which would have been a perfect fit for a black and white book.
The book itself strongly adheres to boot camp terminology; however, at times it appears forced and indeed condescending. Endless phrases like "Listen up, Recruit!" belittle what little practical information is in the book. Additionally, the author is very fond of the phrase "Put you're thinking caps on". Correct me if I'm wrong, but this book was made for adults. She juxtaposes serious advice on not hurting yourself during exercises with such juvenile phrasing, and this just works against her, dispelling any authority and credibility she may have.
The book's actual exercises are unnecessarily difficult to follow, you'll see a photograph of someone at rest, then stretching, and then the exact same photograph of them earlier at rest. Its supposed to demonstrate the whole routine, but fails at teaching correct posture and form, which is ironic considering the author so vehemently emphasizes their importance.
The book does have redeeming qualities. The additional section on nutrition is welcome, however it seems bizarre to list foods like you would in a plain word document. There is not organization, no tables, no formatting at all. It seems rushed and detracts from the information that is actually there.
The author does make a point to emphasize realistic goals. She cautions against supplements, and employs a no-nonsense approach that is easy to agree with.
At the same time, there are holes in the whole book. She will mention eating nuts, but then make a cautionary statement, promising to elaborate upon it later but never actually doing so. She mentions that protein powders can be helpful, and then mentions a list of recommended products that never materializes except for a website link in the citations page.
Overall, I was very disappointed with this book. I appreciated the practicality with which it addressed working out, but its unprofessional presentation (bordering on gaudy), visually obscure work out photographs, and juvenile phrasing make it impossible to recommend.
Very Good Ab and General Fitness Book.......2006-03-01
This book might not seem to be good at first. Not many colored pictures, no fancy book design, just simple straightforward diagrams depicting different Ab workouts. However, when you read through the entire book you learn everything you need to know about general health(how to eat right, what to eat, when to eat) and how to finnaly get those tight ABS you've always wanted while being able to show them off from your correct diet. Thats whats so nice about this book is that its straightforward. You want to lose wieght? Eat these things, workout using these routines, and use your common sense. I've been on the program for two weeks and can tell the workouts are very effective. Plus since there are a multitude of Ab workouts when you become more advanced you can start to make your own programs from the workouts. I'm in pretty good shape and use to do martial arts and find these workouts just for the ABs very good and when i finnaly get back into shape I can go harder using the book as a guideline. Thats whats so nice about it. If your a beginner you'll start off slow. If your advanced you've got some nice workouts to target your stomch muscles too. Every level is in this book. But just like anything, you have to use your common sense and know that its gonna take devotion and time to get the results you want. The book is only a guideline. You have to stick to it or nothing will happen.
No nonsense information, great jumpstart to a better health.......2005-07-28
If you're about to start on your journey to a better health, this is THE book you should read. Hey, it's cheap, it goes straight to the facts you need about nutrition and exercise without needing ten 660 page volumes. I went through it in two days. Most other books I buy usually stay on the shelves for ever if the first 50 pages haven't hooked me. The stuff you'll learn will just keep you wanting to read some more. Highly recommended. Hoo Yah!
BOOT CAMP ABS.......2005-06-18
Is your gut flat or flabby? Are your love handles quickly morphing into spare tires? You need a little discipline in your life! Who better to dish out that discipline than a Marine?
Meet former Marine captain, Charla McMillian, personal trainer and owner of FitBoot - Basic Training for Professionals. McMillian is a certified National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) specialist and combines her NSCA credentials with her boot camp experience to bring a total body fitness idea to the page. The result, BOOT CAMP ABS: Get Rock-Hard Abs.
McMillian's approach to losing those extra pounds and firming your soft abs is an all-encompassing change of diet and exercise routine that, while rigorous enough to require conscious commitment, can hardly be classified as "fad." McMillian reminds us of age-old diet and exercise requirements that will produce the desired body we're all striving for, without following recent trends of dangerously removing necessary dietary needs, tough on the body and impossible to maintain for a lifetime.
BOOT CAMP ABS starts with a detailed "orientation," where each new "recruit" is given the skinny on the biology behind the enviable six-pack, has all her questions about abs answered, and receives strict orders to "report to medical" to get an all-clear on the program. Finally, the orientation takes the new recruit through a series of assessments, including body mass index measurements and a couple of practice exercises, to create a baseline of health for monitoring growth and achievement down the road.
As for the workouts themselves, McMillian has designed three levels of workouts for varying levels of fitness. She then guides the reader by specifically laying out what exercises to perform each day of the new regimen, according to which category the new recruit falls under. This specific guideline of daily exercise is the book's strength. Rather than simply tell the reader to perform certain exercises, McMillian tells him exactly which exercises to perform, including how many and how often.
After beginning the exercise portion of the new routine, the recruit is instructed to work slowly and methodically through the latter portion of the book, which details diet recommendations and restrictions to go along with the exercises for best results. McMillian painstakingly explains the biology behind what we put in our mouths and how it turns into fat or fuel. This section of the book is incredibly informative, but if her orders are not followed and the reader attempts to "ingest" all of the information at once, she might find herself overwhelmed and bored by the complexity.
BOOT CAMP ABS follows a strict exercise routine and not quite as strict diet to create the perfect abs for the reader. With the detail and science behind the book, along with the many charts, logs, and worksheets to begin and monitor performance, it is difficult to imagine failure at this program. Worth its weight in functionality, BOOT CAMP ABS will likely be a staple on any fitness conscious reader's shelf.
Bootcamp Abs - "Hoo-yah".......2005-05-13
Bootcamp Abs is impressive well crafted edgy read that's offers probably the best nutritional advice and workout routines I've ever seen. For the past 10 weeks, I've been following the prescriptions found the book and can say I'll never pay for another gym membership or read a "fad diet" book again. At 34, I've lost 21 lbs and have reduced my 3 minute run to just under a 8 mins mile pace. I might not be ready for a marathon, but I feel great and know I'm in the best shape of my life.
One of the secrets that surprised me was that the exercises and workouts require no gym or weight lifting equipment. The exercises and the workout routines only use your body as resistance. I'm amazed the impact my own body has had on muscle development in my chest, arms, legs, and abs. All I've needed these weeks is my local workout area, running path, and self-motivation to keep me going.
My favorite part of the book is the second half of the book. It zeros in on fully explaining what good nutrition is in very practical and easy to understand ways. The author does a great job dispelling the myths of "fad diets" and stresses the importance of good "lower-GI" carbs, protein, fiber, unsaturated fats, dietary supplaments, and daily water intake. While good health is work unto itself, the book does a great job simplifying the nutritional guidance into 8 Direct Orders that when the are committed to memory are easy to follow.
Overall, the book has a good healthy dose of military edge. I enjoyed the "Hoo-yah, Yes Ma'ma/Sir!" approach the book. Every time I refer back to the book for more detail, I get inspired knowing the workouts and nutritional guidance I'm following is close if not the same as the men and women of the Marines and other armed forces. The workouts and nutritional guidelines are spot on (I can truly attest). If your serious about building a stronger body, developing better cardio, and getting those six-pack abs, Bootcamp Abs is the right way to go. Hoo-yah!

Customer Reviews:
The best Stereogram book I own.......2006-06-14
I personally love highly detailed stereograms by Bohdan Petyhyrycz and this 3D-book is a great collection of his works. Unlike popular Magic Eye series, in this book each stereogram has lots of details in a hidden scene. In addition to that Bohdan adds more realism to his stereograms by using photographic images for hidden 3D characters. It really helps to recognize what's inside, behind the magical image.
Artful and creative collection of Angels in 3-D.......1999-12-28
An engaging use of 3-D stereogram art. I enjoyed the artistic unfolding of the two-dimensional scenes into the hidden view of 3-D Angels. I was surprised by the almost photographic quality of the angels, complete with faces.

Incredible pictures and uplifting story.......1997-06-28
I first bought this book in 1989, when my son was six. Since then, I've bought copies for his second and third grade teachers, for every friend turning seven or eight years old, and for our own library.
The story describes how a new recruit to heaven's division of cloud making decides to make life beautiful for NYC and for a special girl who actually looks into the sky.
The most interesting point is that the book features African-American characters, a point I did not even notice for the first four years I was buying and giving the book. (Maybe that says more about my powers of observation than anything else, but the drawings are stunning.

Book Description
Christopher Lowell has done it again! In response to thousands of letters requesting a book on small-room decorating, the Emmy Award-winning star of the Discovery Channel's most popular decorating show applies his innovative thinking to the challenge of turning cramped quarters into a comfortable, stylish home. He takes the Seven Layers of Design system introduced in his first book one step further by applying it to small spaces and inspiring readers to create extraordinary rooms out of the ordinary.
With his trademark energy and innovation, Lowell guides us through two modular homes, one designed in a traditional style, the other in a more modern decor, but both intended to offer the reader a myriad of design options and ideas. The traditional home features a Nantucket-style master bath, a sunroom with faux stone walls, a French-influenced guest bedroom, and a separate dining room. The modern home contains a kitchen finished in sophisticated stainless-steel paint, a living room-guest bedroom partitioned with sliding bookcases, and a Zen master bedroom with a space-saving platform bed.
Room by room, Lowell tackles such problems as how to make the most of tiny master bedrooms, how to create several rooms from one, what to do with narrow hallways, how to conserve space by creating multipurpose rooms, and how to renovate a guest bathroom for under $100. Before and after pictures show how anyone can perform miracles just by "thinking outside the box." Once again, Christopher Lowell inspires readers to dream big, no matter how small their space.

Misleading!! Not really for tiny spaces........2006-11-08
I don't watch cable tv and Christopher Lowell isn't familiar to me, but I was eager to read this book as I have a number of small rooms. I was extremely disappointed to find that all the rooms in the book were comparatively huge. I was hoping for decorating tips for rooms 12 x12 and smaller. Oh, well. Some of my friends who have bigger rooms have been happy to borrow it.
Browse for Ideas.......2006-08-21
This was a bit of a let down, as I'd loved Lowell's Dream Decor On A Budget. This one is choppy and hard to follow. Reading his descriptions and then trying to find what he's talking about in the photos is tough.
Some of the rooms are delightful and there's quite a few do-it-yourself projects included (mission style table, settee-divider, island bed).
They included too many photos of Lowell, making it seem like a fan club book rather than a serious decorating guide.
Some good ideas in the sketches.......2005-11-17
My chief complaint is the photographs used to illustrate how Lowell's ideas and sketches were carried out DO NOT at all compare to the photos of the empty original rooms. It is extremely hard for the eye to determine the angle and placement. Several photos I couldn't even figure out what area of the room I was looking at. The AFTER photos are too close up and it's impossible to use them as a reference or anything more than a vague idea. BAD PHOTOGRAPHY.
I did get a few ideas for small spaces. I found a lot of use of the same colors over and over again, same plush fabrics and lawrence-of-arabia style draping. A bit lush and overdone for the typical home perhaps? I like his ideas very much though about clutter and making the most of your surroundings. But please re-issue with better photographs of the results of his ideas and works! What a disappointment in that regard.
Packed full of ideas.......2005-09-20
I think some of the other reviewers were overly harsh in their assessment of this book. You have to read the first chapter to get the context of the decorating he did for these two houses. Also, if you had a chance to watch his TV show when he decorated these houses, you'll see they actually turned out quite livable. He walked around and discussed what his team had done. I do agree that the book is a little over the top. Chris likes looking at himself and saw fit to include 47 pictures of himself. But I think he crammed in so much "stuff" so a reader could pick a little bit from here and there and come up with his or her own style. If he had been spartan in his design, the reader would have fewer ideas to choose from. I'm rather glad he gave me lots of choices. Even when I threw a bunch away, I still had more ideas then I get from similar books. I encourage the reader to look at it from that perspective and enjoy the metamorphosis of these two empty, bland trailers into little fantasy houses. I found his "Seven Layers of Design" book even more useful, because he spends a lot of time explaining his design methodology. If you're afraid of the investment, buy the books used from the Amazon marketplace. I bought all three for less then the price of one brand new. Cha ching! Good luck!
Over the top decorating - and not in a good way.......2004-10-02
Christopher Lowell comes so close to getting it right but unfortunately doesn't seem to know when enough is enough, not just over the top. He uses the word "merchandising" a lot and...well...his rooms often look like department store displays, so filled with things that it is hard to imagine living (let alone breathing) in those rooms. Subtract half of what he puts in the average room and you'd have a decent space. But, please, Christopher, stop before it gets tacky. A living room is not a window display in a shopping mall.

Interesting Start for the Legion.......2005-01-07
Volume 1 of the Legion of Super-Heroes is an interesting look at their earliest appearances. The team grows in fits and starts as seen through other series (Superboy, Supergirl, and Superman) as a strange assortment of teens from the future appear in Smallville and Midvale for a wide variety of odd reasons. It is hard to keep track of the growing membership as many appear only in the background and main plot points often revolve around a new member appearing for the sake of the story, such as the rather odd Star Boy and the more interesting Ultra Boy storylines. Only near the end of the volume does the Legion itself get its own storylines and the early issues begin with a bang as the Legion suffers its first death, Lightning Lad. The promise of greatness is apparent in a few of the stories, if not quite delivered, but this volume is still essential for any Legion fan.
The births of heroes presented in a great format.......2002-11-14
The DC Comics Archive Editions may come with a high price point, but it would be hard for any fan to argue he wasn't getting his money's worth. Where else could you get the entire history of the Legion of Super-Heroes (in order of publication, no less?) -- up to ELEVEN volumes now!
This first volume, of course, contains the first several appearances of the Legion and of Legion-related characters, back when they were mainly supporting members of the Superboy -- and later Supergirl -- cast. The Legion plays a very peripheral role in several of the stories -- the one where Supergirl is trying to find Superman a wife, for instance -- and in some the Legion doesn't appear at all (such as the Mon-El and Ultra Boy origin stories where the Legion is merely alluded to). Eventually the book makes it to the era where the Legion got their own serial -- "Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes," and although members of the Super-family still appear in most of these, the Legion is finally being allowed to come into its own.
The characters introduced in this volume range from the inspiring (Brainiac 5, trying to atone for his ancestor's sins, the poor, exiled Mon-El, etc.) to the deliciously silly (I confess, I'm a big fan of Matter-Eater Lad and Bouncing Boy. I'm probably the ONLY fan of Matter-Eater Lad and Bouncing Boy) and this book also contains something that was pretty rare at the time -- the death of a superhero. You just didn't see that sort of thing in DC Comics in 1958.
I can't wait to pick up volume two. Oh -- and kudos to DC for keeping the cover design of their Archives uniform for so long. Unlike Marvel's similar "Masterworks" series, I can start my LSH Archives collection right now and I know that all eleven volumes will look like a set on my shelf once I've got them. It's a small thing, I know, but it's something I appreciate.
Coloring gaffes distract from fantastic content.......2002-09-09
As a collection of essential comic book classics this can't be beat. Each one of these stories is a winner. Unfortunately, as one of the first editions in DC's Archive series it suffers from a number of production missteps that too often distract.
1.) Although like all DC Archive Editions this is printed on sturdy archival paper designed to last for ages, the dust jacket was not produced with logevity in mind. I have had my copy for ten years now and the dust jacket has already become very yellow. So yellow in fact that the Super-Hero Clubhouse on the cover has become the exact same color as the once-white background.
2.) A lot of noise was made by DC when these editions were first released regarding an extensive color reconstruction that, theoretically, was to remain faithful to the original material with the exception of minor corrections where neccessary. Sadly, the colorists involved in this edition took great liberties. Comparing the original comics with the Archive edition can be a real shock as some stories, for example the story introducing Ultra-Boy, seem to be colored without consulting the originals at all. Another annoying choice made by the colorists involves alterations of a 'retroactive continuity' sort. In the early stories there was always a scene near the end that showwed a handful of anonymous members of the Legion. In the Archive edition the colorists have changed the coloring on these unnamed characters to make them appear to be characters who would be introduced later (e.g. coloring a character green with yellow hair to make it appear Brainiac Five had been there from the first story). These coloring changes now become editorial decisions that do more harm than good. As for color corrections where neccessary, the Archive edition manages to make many mistakes that were never in the originals. Just witness the inconsistant all-yellow and sometimes yellow-and-red of Supergirl's "S" insignia on her cape. These mistakes are not present in the original comic.
3.) The coloring is made up of very large pixels that don't conform to any shapes other than rectangles. This was an early attempt at using the computer to color a comic, it didn't work that well and it's painful to behold. At the price these books are listed, one would have hoped DC would've worked out the kinks in their coloring software before using it on such a project. Another glaringly anachronistic coloring gaffe is made by continious use of an airbrush or spray paint effect (it honestly looks like it was applied using a mouse in an old MacPaint program). Airbrushing effects were simply impossible using the 4-color printing process of the late fifties and early sixties, and it really looks awful besides.
Now the good news: DC has had ten years to get it right and I can report that they have indeed. A comparison of this edition with Volume 11 will reveal all these issues have been corrected in later editions. But the mistakes in these early editions were never corrected...
Book Description
The longest running science fiction television show, with a cult following on a par with Star Trek, the story of Doctor Who is the story of British television over the past four decades. Every taste is catered for in the world of Who, and this guide covers every shocking revelation and melodramatic cliffhanger, every heartache and death, as well as the liberal doses of humor—both intentional and otherwise. With an informative introductory essay, each Doctor's era is put under the microscope with facts and opinions on all the stories. An in-depth reference section details further reading, fascinating and bizarre Doctor Who websites, and a short history of spin-off stories and merchandising.

Too much style, not enough substance.......2007-10-03
Mark Campbell brings us his fourth edition of his Doctor Who, Pocket Essentials guide. While looking better than his previous editions, due mainly to the hardcover with a bright, photo-adorned jacket, the substance is kind of disappointing. Don't judge a book by its cover. His first edition had more depth. In that first edition, he had a szhort paragraph on literary works or films that influenced each story. This paragraph has been removed, a pity because that was one of the aspects that separated his guide from others. Also removed was the paragraph on alternate titles for each story, not as big a loss, but a loss still. I'm assuming these sections were removed so Campbell could increase the type in this edition. Trust me; this was unnecessarily done.
Mr. Campbell falls into the trap of rating certain stories based on today's standards rather than the standards of the era in which it was made. For instance, under Web Planet he writes, "In 1965 this may have been a laudable attempt to create an alien world, but nowadays a huge suspension of disbelief is required". Well, duh! It was written in 1965. The technology for special effects in 1965 was not as advanced as it is today. You should realize that, Mr. Campbell.
Another baffler that plagues this book is that for Ghost Light, in his first edition, he rated it accurately when he gave it a 0/5 rating, a rating I totally agree with. Yet, in this current edition, in which his total ranking points have been upped from five to ten, Mr. Campbell gives Ghost Light 4/10. That left me scratching my head. Either Mark Campbell's opinion of the story improved over the seven years between editions, or he simply flunked the fractions section of math in school.
Lastly, Campbell shares the hypocrisy possessed by detractors of the Colin Baker era. Under Vengeance On Varos verdict section, he says, "The notorious acid bath scene, in which the Doctor makes a flippant comment after watching two men die hideous deaths, is deeply problematic". Perhaps. However, he mentions nothing about how in McCoy era's Remembrance Of The Daleks the Doctor manipulates Davros into destroying Skaro, with blatant disregard for any peaceful Thals still living on the planet. Isn't this "problematic", Mr. Campbell? Hypocritical? Very much so! At least the Colin Baker's Doctor never destroyed an entire world. The McCoy era gets away with acts for which the Colin Baker era is crucified by authors such as Mark Campbell.
However, all is not negative with this fourth edition. The look of this book is superb, at least on the outside. Also the inside cover is graced with a wonderful black & white photo of the Daleks marching on London, with Big Ben in the background. Campbell manages this extra size without rendering the book too bulky, thus keeping its status as a pocket reference guide. Also, there is a section on the episodes of the new series, up to and including The Runaway Bride, a two-page section on various Doctor Who reference books, and a two-page section on web sites geared toward Doctor Who. The section on the different Doctor Who spin-offs is expanded to include Attack of The Graske, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures from the new series.
All in all, despite the negatives, the fourth edition is a laudable effort, to use Mark Campbell's word. A bit of advice for your next edition, please lose your "verdict" section in favor of more factual info, such as the aforementioned sections that were removed. It's quite irksome seeing one of your favorite stories trashed with a 2/10 or 3/10 rating. The reason we purchase these guides is to relive the magic of Doctor Who, not to see our favorite stories ripped to shreds.
Fulfills Promise.......2002-04-15
This convenient slim volume fulfills its promise - a basic overview that covers the essential elements of each show. While the author's reviews (or "verdicts") can seem a bit didactic, they always entertain. More importantly, Campbell delivers a fitting addition to this series of paperbacks: succinct, thorough, and easy to carry along on shopping trips. Could anyone have written this? Probably not. It's too short for sloppy writing. This type of brevity takes hard work!
Essentials? Hardly that.......2001-05-15
I was greatly dissappointed in the book. While it has some interesting points of view, it is so slanted the book should be a trapizoid and not rectangular. I disagreed on several of the ratings. All in all, I much prefer The Discontinuity Guide by Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping. While at times they disagree on their reviews, they are fair in their outlook.
Practical Guide.......2000-08-11
This book is a practical guide which itemises detail, time, place etc, with precise storylines and opinion set out in an easy to read format for anyone wanting information. Surprise and interest for me was the number of well known actors "Dr Who" used.
A Joy to Read.......2000-08-01
I would just like to say how much I am enjoying reading "Pocket Essentials TV: Doctor Who". I like the unofficial style, which gives the bad points as well as the good. I'm currently mid-way through the Jon Pertwee section, and am finding it thoroughly enjoyable. I've recommended the book to many people. Overall the book gets a groundbreaking 10 out of 10.
