Book Description
After more than half a century of marriage, Dorothy and George are embarking on their first journey abroad together. Three decades younger, Jan and Annemieke are taking the last in their tumultuous union. At first the luxury of a Caribbean resort is no match for the habits of domestic life. Then the couples’ paths cross, and a series of surprises ensues—a disappearance and an assault, most dramatically, but also a teapot tempest of passions, slights, misunderstandings, and small awakenings that punctuate a week in which each pair struggles to come to terms with what’s been keeping them apart.
Becoming Strangers is a different kind of love story—bittersweet, bitingly funny, and ultimately redeeming.

Sputters to an End.......2006-11-21
Louise Dean's first novel is an uneven reading experience. Much of the text is involved in character study rather than telling a story; so the reader trudges through the novel. Of the two main couples, George & Dorothy are older. Dorothy is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and is gradually fading into darkness. She wanders away from the Caribbean resort where they are vacationing, which results in a half-hearted search for her. George meanwhile decides to write the memoir of his life, which entails how to build a refrigeration room for food businesses. The other couple is Annemieke and Jan. Annemieke is a rather cold woman who has suffered through a loveless marriage and now can't wait for her liberation. She has several affairs. The second is discovered with a resort employee Adam, who she then accuses of rape. Husband Jan suffers from cancer and will apparently soon die. All four of the main characters are depressing.
Bill Maloney is the most interesting character in the book. He's a minor, supporting character. Bill has casual sex with Annemieke as the book starts. He doesn't know she's married at that point. Bill is a Christian and has a moral code, although he also is comfortable knowing that he's a sinner who will seek forgiveness. His anguish over his affair and the impact it could have on Adam's rape charge is one of the better parts of the book.
Perhaps the best chapter is when Annemieke is summoned to the hotel operator Burns' office and has to confront her husband with the rape details and determine whether to press charges. Jan doesn't believe her. Jan appears attracted to a woman named Laurie, but is too sick to try to find love. After these little tragedies, the novel sputters to an end as the couples fly home, work out their relationships, and go on individual holidays. While Dean's storytelling ability is good, her subject matter and characters did not connect with me. Taxi!
This book is a wasted opportunity, like the lives it attempts to depict.......2006-02-20
I'm giving this book a generous rating of 2 stars because I did read it at one sitting. But I read it at one sitting because I saw a lot of potential to discuss the issues at hand - the examination of your motivations, relationships, wasted opportunities, etc. when you're coming to the end of life's road. But the discussion was trivial and ultimately didn't work because Ms. Dean gave us characters who, after 304 pages, I didn't really know or care about.
The Memories Locked In Each Other.......2006-01-18
Louise Dean's first novel focuses on the stories of two couples who travel to a holiday resort in the Caribbean as a treat from their children. None of the four individuals particularly want to go on this holiday, but they feel obligated to because both couples realise that it might be the last one that they have together. Both couples are struggling to deal with illness. A middle-aged Belgian couple named Annemieke and Jan go on this holiday with the knowledge that Jan is suffering from a terminal cancer. The older English couple named George and Dorothy realise that Dorothy is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease. Despite the depressing idea of couples going on a final holiday while facing their own mortality may seem terribly depressing, Dean is able to suffuse the narrative with comic touches that gives it a great deal of humanity and makes it a rewarding, moving read.
This thirty-four year old writer has unusual insight into the complex way a long term marriage can develop a significance beyond the mere routines which come with the bonding of two people. In some ways the individual identity of each person becomes lost because the memories from each of their lives are inextricably linked to this other person. What the characters in this novel are struggling to decide is if they will lose their own sense of themselves if they leave their partner. George tries to meticulously record his past by writing a memoir and Annemieke attempts to completely rediscover a self worth in anonymous sexual encounters. Dean's writing is incredibly enjoyable to read in its richly detailed short chapters and startlingly emotional scenes. At the same time it is able to explore some very complex ideas about the nature of relationships and personality in original, meaningful ways. This is a unique and beautiful first novel.
"Death was a binary affair, not cumulative.".......2006-01-03
Against a lush Caribbean landscape, two couples on vacation meet and act out the small dramas of their marriages in a careful study of relationships honed on habit and unhappiness. But in this tropical paradise, an elegant resort that caters to its guests' every whim, both couples will come to terms with the realities of their choices. Jan DeGroot is dying of cancer, although he has gamely fought its determined advance for the last six years: "The knife-and-forking of his body seemed to give a perverse impetus to his will to survive." This Northern European couple has been sent on their "last holiday" by their grown sons, Annemieke DeGroot long trapped in her own discontent, almost anxious to get on with the rest of her life, her beauty fading while she waits for Jan's demise. In contrast, George and Dorothy, an English couple, have been married nearly sixty years, their habits entrenched with the daily bickering over nonsense that has become familiar.
George makes friends with Jan, though Dorothy and Annemieke could hardly be less compatible. Yet the heightened awareness of distance brings a flavor of friendship, at least for the men, who surprisingly find a sympathetic ear as they exchange stories and disappointments, lingering over drinks. While Dorothy drifts along in her own musings, George's complaints turn to a more honest appraisal of their shared years: "You couldn't tell him that there was any marriage that wasn't equal measure love and hate." Even Dorothy enjoys occasional insights, although she'd rather be at home amid her things: "Being an old lady was not as hard as being an old man." With a supporting cast of other resort-goers, a South African with a penchant for honesty who has a short fling with Annemieke, a long-haired, tattooed tile-setter, "the Americans" who demand their needs be instantly attended and the resort director, Jan and George sort through memories and plans for the future, limited though it may be, while Annemieke thrashes about in an effort to avoid her own shortcomings.
The characters are drawn with deft precision, their flaws and eccentricities stark against the lush background of the Caribbean resort. Each couple suffers the detritus of years of marriage, the petty rivalries and jealousies, silences and resentments. The author writes with such clarity that each page bespeaks a glance into a mirror, these protagonists as familiar as the spouse who snores when sleeping or habitually remarks on the other's failures, days of meant-to-do-better, years finally passed. In a novel that is neither maudlin nor depressing, the author carefully manipulates the myriad contradictions of each marriage with a compassionate eye and a talent for incisive observation, balancing flaws, fictions and attributes in an incisive characters study. Many American are becoming extremely concerned about the role the U.S. is trying to play in the world. We seem to be trying to force our ideas of democracy, our style of economy, our customs, and sometimes even our religious beliefs on other cultures by force of arms. In the process we are inadvertently becoming a warrior nation instead of the beacon for secular and religious freedom we have so often been in the past and should have remained. While many Americans see our military role as our manifest destiny, much of the rest of the world is frightened by it and responds negatively. Those Americans opposed to the degenerative trend are becoming strangers in their own native land. As we constantly insult and make enemies out of erstwhile friends, the results could be disastrous for the entire world as well as us. Many aspects of those other cultures are highly admirable and other aspects difficult, but perhaps we should admit there are admirable and also difficult aspects to our polyglot culture also.
Many Americans do not know, and therefore do not respect cultures and religions different from our own. Our media is quick to point out their perceived faults, but seldom their attributes, because much of our media is, sorry to say, also ignorant of their customs, traditions and beliefs. Thus our imaginations often run wild when we think about them.
The purpose of this monograph is to suggest that we would we wise to study other cultures before we try to pass judgment and force our will on other peoples lives. We may see out motives to be moral and idealistic but most of the rest of the world does not. The writer has been privileges to experience some of those cultures first hand at the grass roots level both in the U.S. and abroad. This simple story tells of some of those experiences.

With the extraordinary growth in understanding the biochemical workings of the brain, psychotherapy is experiencing its most profound transition in the 20th century: from couches to pills. This book is an essential guide to the chemical treatment of disorders such as ADD, anxiety, bipolar disorders, depression and other conditions. Highly recommended to clinical psychologists, counselors and social workers, and also to patients, current or future, being treated with pharmacological substances.
Book Description
The last twenty-five years have witnessed an explosion of knowledge about the influence of brain biochemistry on mood and behavior and about pharmacological approaches to treating mental and emotional disorders. A substantial portion of patients seen in clinical practice are taking some medication or might usefully be advised to do so. But many clinical psychologists, social workers, and counselors need additional information in order to better treat patients already on medication, know when and to whom to refer new patients for psychiatric consultation, and work collaboratively with psychiatrists when appropriate.
Michael J. Gitlin's indispensable first edition of The Psychotherapists Guide to Psychopharmacology has now been updated and revised -- this new second edition now reflects major changes that have influenced the clinical arena in the last five years such as the recent release of DSM-IV and the domination of the psychopharmacological field by the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluoxetine (Prozac). The Psychotherapists Guide to Psychopharmacology, Second Edition also now includes coverage of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and contains updated sections on the new antipsychotics for schizophrenia and the increased use of anticonvulsant mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder. The book also includes other significant changes that have influenced the field over the last few years, such as brain imaging studies, research in obsessive compulsive disorder and social phobia, and such prominent topics in women's health as pregnancy, PMS, postpartum disorders, and breast feeding.
This revision of an already established guide will again be an essential reference for all nonmedical professionals involved in treating mental and emotional disorders.

Basic but essential .........2002-08-22
I'm a clinical psychologist. You need to have this book . You need to understand the psychopharmacology of your patients. Lots of interesting and important information regarding Dx and the effects of Rx. The only problem with this book is (as you know) things are changing so fast that we need a new edition.
Very useful for psychologists........1998-03-09
This is an excellent book, written by an expert who clearly has worked in the trenches. Loads of clinical wisdom right on the money. Essential for psychologists, whether seeking prescription privileges or not.

Lord of Obsidian: Book 2, Search for Earthlight Trilogy .......2007-07-15
Peter, a thirteen year old boy finds himself caught up in a world of magic, prophecy, and danger. The Obsidian Orb is a precious and powerfully magic artifact. Anyone who has the power to control the orb's power is essentially master of the world. An evil power hungry man, Sujad Cariotis, takes possession of the rebuilt orb, calling himself Lord of Obsidian. It is Peter's job to assure that Sujad Cariotis does not succeed in his evil plan. To do so, Peter must not only regain the Obsidian Orb but also learn it's magical secrets.
Lord of Obsidian is the second book of the Quest for Earthlight Trilogy. Though I have not read the first book in this series, I felt that the flashbacks and conversations between the various characters gave me a good working knowledge of what had occurred in the first book. Nonetheless, reading this book made me want to read the first book to get a bit more insight into the past interactions between these characters.

Her-2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer reads like a novel at first. Oncologist Dennis Slamon has spent 13 years "obsessed with a molecule called Her-2," which he believed "held the key to nothing less than curing breast cancer." The book chronicles the search to unlock the secrets of Her-2/neu, a protein that makes cancer cells grow quickly; the discovery of the Her-2/neu antibody, which resulted in tumors shrinking and, sometimes, remission of the cancer; and the development of the drug Herceptin. It is also the story of the women with breast cancer who participated in Herceptin's clinical trials, including Anne McNamara, who has been fighting tumor after tumor since 1978.
The scientific and research-history sections are heavy and slow going, but Robert Bazell effectively juxtaposes the difficult scientific concepts and long research history of Her-2 with human drama. He keeps bringing the reader back to the threads of the personal stories we are following--especially the women with breast cancer and their determination to recapture their health. This is what makes Her-2 so compelling. --Joan Price
Book Description
Two years after she underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Barbara Bradfield's aggressive breast cancer had recurred and spread to her lungs. The outlook was grim. Then she took part in Genentech's clinical trials for a new drug. Five years later she remains cancer-free.
Her-2 is the biography of Herceptin, the drug that provoked dramatic responses in Barbara Bradfield and other women in the trials and that offers promise for hundreds of thousands of breast cancer patients. Unlike chemotherapy or radiation, Herceptin has no disabling side effects. It works by inactivating Her-2/neu--a protein that makes cancer cells grow especially quickly-- produced by a gene found in 25 to 30 percent of all breast tumors. Herceptin caused some patients' cancers to disappear completely; in others, it slowed the progression of the disease and gave the women months or years they wouldn't otherwise have had. Herceptin is the first treatment targeted at a gene defect that gives rise to cancer. It marks the beginning of a new era of treatment for all kinds of cancers.
Robert Bazell presents a riveting account of how Herceptin was born. Her-2 is a story of dramatic discoveries and strong personalities, showing the combination of scientific investigation, money, politics, ego, corporate decisions, patient activism, and luck involved in moving this groundbreaking drug from the lab to a patient's bedside. Bazell's deft portraits introduce us to the remarkable people instrumental in Herceptin's history, including Dr. Dennis Slamon, the driven UCLA oncologist who played the primary role in developing the treatment; Lily Tartikoff, wife of television executive Brandon Tartikoff, who tapped into Hollywood money and glamour to help fund Slamon's research; and Marti Nelson, who inspired the activists who lobbied for a "compassionate use" program that would allow women outside the clinical trials to have access to the limited supplies of Herceptin prior to FDA approval of the drug. And throughout there are the stories of the heroic women with advanced breast cancer who volunteered for the trials, risking what time they had left on an unproven treatment. Meticulously researched, written with clarity and compassion, Her-2 is masterly reporting on cutting-edge science.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Well, written, for the most part.......2007-09-10
The book was well-written and interesting for the most part, but I think its conclusions misrepresent the contribution of Herceptin to the battle against breast cancer. Post-marketing studies have shown that Herceptin is not the wonder drug it was hoped to be. The book downplays the cardiac side-effects which are both more common and more serious than Bazell lets on. Nothing has changed in the battle against cancer. Despite the entry of this new weapon into the arsenal of oncologists, the quest to defeat cancer is still (to mix my metaphors) more like sticking boards in the sand to hold back the tide than building a sea wall.
Great Book.......2006-03-23
I read this book in just a few days. It prompted me to give myself a breast exam and low and behold I found a lump.
Turns out I had developed a cancerous tumor but caught it in the early stages. This book changed my life in sooo many ways
Wow, what a book!.......2003-01-13
I am a newly diagnosed young woman with breast cancer that over express her2/neu. I am considering taking Herceptin for an early stage cancer. I would not have this possible choice were it not for the wonderfuly minds and efforts of the people that created Herceptin. My thanks to Dr. Slamon and Dr. Ullrich! And really mostly, my thanks to the brave women who faced this horrible disease and enrolled in the trials. This book reads like a novel. I couldn't put it down and read it in 1 sitting. It's a thriller! If I had 1 small complaint it would be that it only very lightly touches on the possible side effect of heart damage especially when used in conjunction with Adriamycin, which weighs heavily on my mind. This is a great read for breast cancer patients and anyone who wants to read a great book.
A book that left me speechless.......2001-11-25
This book gave new light and explored old beliefs about breast cancer. I have never been so impressed by the intellect of such a powerful author as Robert Bazell. Every part of the Her-2 intereasted me and each page left me completely speechless. I would recommend this book everyone willing to explore the idea of an outstandingly facinating book.
Good to the Last Page.......2001-11-22
I had to read this book for my Biotechnology class and although I am close to failing it I found Her-2 to be pretty exciting book.
Her-2 by Bazell and King is about breast cancer, however, it reveals many other interesting things about the drug industry and how progress is made in the medical research field. There are different stories and view points and the authors have succesfully managed to combine all this into a book that both teaches and thrills us. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn more about breast cancer and about the insights of creating and bringing to the market a revolutionary drug - from selection of the trial patients to the President's office.

Purdy uses only natural ingredients, no egg substitutes or artificial sweeteners. Purdy's mastery is demonstrated through her advice on reducing the fat in your favorite dessert recipes and the notes accompanying each recipe that explain how she cut the fat compared with traditional versions. Recipes make up the bulk of this book, but the sections on ingredients, quick fixes, and understanding the labels on foods are equally valuable.

GLUTEN-FREE & LACTOSE-FREE RECIPES GALORE!.......2005-09-06
AT LAST! She has an exceptional index of tons of fabulous main-stream baking recipes for those of us who suffer from Celiac Disease (can't eat anything made with wheat/rye/oats/barley). You've NO idea how difficult it is to bake without wheat flour! While this is certainly not the main theme of these marvelously decadently rich recipes, it's very sensitive of this author to include an index of her recipes for us. Fantastic for Celiac kids who miss out on so many desert goodies. And for the rest of us "big" kids who never outgrow our longing for great deserts! Also, don't miss the index on Lactose-intolerance recipes. THANK YOU SUSAN PURDY!
The cover picture says it all!.......2003-01-10
I had a ball just reading the recipes. While they all wouldn't be considered "low-fat" they are reduced-fat and would definitely curb that craving that so many of us sweet-tooths get. I found the way the author reduced the fat (without adding sugar) to be fascinating. She really knew her stuff and I look forward to trying one of the cheesecake recipes later today.
Yummy, Yet Good for You.......2001-02-03
Just reading the Table of Contents may make your mouth water: Luscious Lemon Squares, Strawberry-Rhubarb Cobbler, Key Lime Pie, Southern Sweet Potato Pie, Pear-Prune-Brandy Cake, sauces, toppings, and more! Susan G. Purdy (former student at "Le Cordon Bleu" and "L'Ecole de Cuisine la Varennes" in Paris) is a master chef, whose previous book, "Let Them Eat Cake" won the Julia Child Award. Her number one criterion for these low-fat goodies is taste: "The recipes must stand on their own and taste wonderful, not `okay' because they are low fat."
It's an easy yet complete guide to making low-fat sweets, with cooking tips on almost every page, enumerated instructions for each recipe, and notes on advance preparation, special equipment, and time requirements.
Her recipe for the delicious and usually cholesterol-heavy Tiramasu is a wonder. Per serving, it has 341 calories (compared to 600 for her favorite non low-fat recipe), 7.8 g of fat (compared to 37 g), and 92 mg of cholesterol (compared to 243mg). Her lemon meringue recipe has half the fat and one-sixth the cholesterol of the usual by using non-fat butter, no egg yolks, and other healthy substitutions. There is a long, excellent chapter on nutrition and cooking, a list of recipes by dietary requirement (e.g., fat-free, lactose-free, reduced-sugar) and occasion (children; holidays). She includes also a humorous 4-pagesection called "quick-fix cover-up tricks" when recipes don't go as expected.
This is a fun, thorough, and delicious set of recipes. Ms. Purdy talks about the importance of reducing fat and cholesterol but never sounds preachy. There's a guide to USDA food labels (for example, she explains the meaning of "fat-free" on a label), a list of mail order suppliers, a bibliography, index, and some beautiful color pictures within the book's 389 pages. An excellent book: Highly recommended!
No one will guess these excellent desserts are low-fat!.......1999-04-28
This is a great cookbook for people who love to eat desserts guilt-free. Susan Purdy does an excellent job of turning traditional favorities (like brownies) into low-fat treats. She uses rich ingredients (like dutch-process cocoa) in smaller quantities to provide flavor and low-fat ingredients (like low-fat cream cheese) to cut fat and calories. She gives a complete breakdown of the fat and calorie content at the end of each receipe. The recipes are written step-by-step and there are some pictures. Most of the recipes make a couple dozen cookies or an 8-in square pan. If I had one complaint it would be that the receipes call for a lot of very specific ingredients (for example, you are advised against substituting low-fat cream cheese and Neufatchel cream cheese). However, everyone I've shared these recipes with can't believe they are low fat.

Classy Patterns that are for Real People.......2006-10-24
Tricoter has produced a book with the classy and sophisticated sweater patterns that normal people can and will wear. The patterns are not difficult and it's nice to see some attractive designs that live and work in the real world. While I'm a fan of knitting magazines, many of the "cutting edge" and "new" fashions shown are things I wouldn't be caught dead in. This book, however, shows very wearable and practical styles that most women would actually wear to work, shopping, social events and everyday.
If you're the type of knitter who freely substitutes yarns, uses different colors than the suggested colors, inserts stitch and color patterns that aren't written into the pattern, and alters patterns and details to suit yourself, then this book is for you. The photography is beautiful and the layout with spiral binding and fold out pages is practical. The sweater designs will send your imagination into overdrive, as it did mine, simply because I can see myself and my friends wearing them.
I'm working on "A Touch of Glass" and have substituted 100% alpaca, hand dyed and worsted weight. I've altered the pattern to work it in the round on circular needles--not a great leap of intellect, I know--and it's turning out to be lovely. I don't have access to the yarns specified in the patterns, so, as all experienced knitters know, I worked a gauge swatch and all is well. A few of the patterns have large areas of plain stockinette stitch or ribbing that can be knit on a knitting machine and then picked up on regular needles to finish the details and some of the shaping.
I did the "Kimono" in a much cheaper yarn (Lion Brand Homespun) along with a strand of alpaca and the results were spectacular. My next project from this book will have to be the "Eyelet interest" sweater in a purple alpaca blend, perhaps with some wool to help it hold the shape of those sleeves....
Disappointing.......2005-04-29
I actually prefer their first book, which at least had loads of very useful tips. I completely agree with Cultured Purl. There are a couple of cuite things here, but except for a cropped sweater which is called a shrug for some wierd reason, most of them really need the yarn specified. Can't see them coming out quite the same with subs.
Take a look at Teva Durham's new book - loop d loop. I just received it and am crazy about it. Over 40 patterns, and gorgeous to boot. I have a huge collection of knitting books, and this is the only one I wouldn't part with. HIGLY recommended.
The most stylish knitting book EVER!.......2005-03-19
From the design, format, and photography of the book itself to its fabulous patterns, this is the most sophisticated book of knitting patterns on the market! Each design is fashion forward yet wearable. The designs stand alone and don't depend on designer yarns. Most importantly, the book inspires the reader's imagination and suggest design elements and resources that enhance a project. Buy it now!

Home decoration bible.......2007-07-26
Even an idiot like me managed to produce flawless faux finishes thanks to the step-by-step guides for the various types of surfaces. Never redecorate your home without consulting this book first.
Fantastic.......2007-03-06
There isn't much to dislike about this book. It certainly offers a myriad of faux finishes...good step by step photos & quite honestly...the details are some of the best out there. I like the photographs included for each method demonstrated ...they were REALISTIC...which you don't always find in books like these. Although not formally rated...it was obvious if one read each explanation whether the application would be difficult or not...some were apparent just by studying the photos. This is most helpful for faux finishers of all skill levels...as well as those more adventurous who are wanting to break new ground. I have often been disappointed by Sunset books in other segments...but they really put a feather in their cap on this book...highly recommend it!
MAKES DECORATING LOOK EASY.......2007-01-04
This is a great book to just venture through and marvel at all the wall coverings that are potential art projects. It is not for the amateur with little talent but for one who truly wants to venture into making a wall a spectatucular work of art. I read it with the anticipation of changing my house walls but one has to have money to buy the necessary supplies and also have some sense of an artistic outcome. There are so many possibilities and I recommend this book to open up your horizons.
Useful.......2003-11-05
Definately a useful book, but it missed some of the subleties of doing faux techniques, such as how to soften some of the looks by going over the glaze by rubbing out a second time with a paint soaked rag (rubbing out technique). I completely remodeled a room and finished it with the rubbing out technique and I really enjoy the look.
I also would suggest getting the Behr Faux Techniques dual CD-rom set. I picked one up at my local Home Depot, and it was amazing the differences in techniques, but by using both resources, I found a method and a look that suited me.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for the serious/professional finisher.......2002-10-26
This is not a beginner book. However it is perfect for the professional finisher - especially if you take an interest in historic paints and techniques. There are many excellent recepies for historic paints, including calcamine. For the serious decorative painter this book is top notch.
Beyond the Basic Craft.......2000-09-06
Although this book might not be the choice of a first-time faux painter, it is invaluable if you want the secrets to a classy, authentic paint job. Classic Paints & Faux Finishes has unlocked the mystery of the strange paint on my 1850's ceilings and why no other paint will stick to it; has authentic alternatives for treating plaster walls without resorting to inappropriate "plastic" paints and it provides simple recipes to create beautiful historic paints that are otherwise nearly impossible to acquire. The color and pigment charts are also very helpful. This is an excellent and inspiring reference book that should join your library when you wish to preserve the integrity of the past or when you cross the line from craft to art.
Not for the Beginner.......2000-06-03
This book shows beautiful faux finishes, but goes more into the natural and/or elaborate elements needed to attain the beautiful finish. It doesn't teach the beginner or home decorator the basic steps needed to attain the wonderful results. I am no closer to a beautiful faux finish in my livingroom than I was before purchasing this book.
Geared more toward the professional painter........1999-10-18
Very informative on the history of painting and the chemicals and processes used. However for the average person, most of the paint, tools and chemicals are not common and are hard to come by. It's not for the person that is looking for step-by-step projects either.

Book Description
2ndsight is the sequel to The End of Print, the first monograph on David Carson's work. Rather than simply being a collection of the work produced since the first book was published, however, 2ndsight is a sequel in the true sense of the word. While The End of Print showed the world Carson's radical new approach, his rejection of the traditional 'rules' of communication, 2ndsight examines the creative process behind the work, and considers the broader implications of his intuitive approach to graphic design. Intuition is central to the book's thesis, and its meaning and influence is explored both in Lewis Blackwell's writing and in the evocative texts by leading designers and thinkers interspersed throughout the book.
As well as presenting Carson's commercial work-- his latest ideas in advertising, magazine and book design, web sites, film and video-- 2ndsight examines work inspired by exhibitions, talks, and workshops. The student workshops Carson conducts in design colleges around the world throw particular light on his creative process. The workings of these sessions are examined: their chief aim being not to teach computer skills or encourage participants to mimic the master, but to help them find their own voice. Collages put together by Carson of selected work pay tribute to the thousands of designers who have taken part.
Finally, a conversation between Blackwell and Carson probes Carson's working methods-- his collage technique of using two or more files at once on screen; of working in black and white; of moving to and from the computer, printing out each stage of a design before developing it further; his experimentation with the balance of type and image. Above all, his respect for intuition and his conviction that it is the key to truly individual graphic expression.
Customer Reviews:
Intuition.......2005-11-13
This is up to date brain food. One of the few books that gets graphic design as it is today. Yes, you have to have the intuition to understand the book, here he instructs you on how to use it. Wish there were more books like this.
Ephemereal.......2005-08-30
If you like David Carson's design aesthetic, you'll like this book. The book doesn't have much written content on graphic design technique and skill. According to Carson, it's just about intuition -- you either have it or you don't.
inspiration.......2003-02-23
This book is artistic inspiration in every sense of the word. The graphical lay out of the book is exceptional and was the basses of multiple pieces of coursework for myself. I love his use of quotations and expression through graphical design. He is a true legend and I will continue to buy his books for may years to come.
Very cool.......1999-08-13
If you liked his first book you are sure to love this one. Carson clearly maintains his position as the most cutting-edge designer today.
If you liked his first book, you'll love this!!.......1999-08-12
His unique attack at graphic design is displayed again in awsome splender
