A good representative collection of Chekhov's stories........2001-02-14
This collection of stories and tales are drawn from the years 1883-1898 and offers the reader a good sampling of Chekhov's prose style, as well as his insight into the nineteenth century Russian character. The characters that occupy places in these stories represent every segment of Russian society: from land owner to peasant, from the scholar to the merchant, from the honest to the perfidious. Chekhov was a doctor by education and training, and this scientific background allowed him to approach his subjects with an objective detachment with little inclination to make his characters "grow." Therefore, Chekhov portrays his characters as they actually were, and never makes a moral judgement as to any weaknesses that might be uncovered.
Chekhov wrote hundreds of these stories and tales in addition to his work as a dramatist, and this element of detachment runs through both genres. If, however, the author assumes a detachment from his characters, he never loses hope for a better day when poverty and ignorance will be eliminated. This theme is also repeated in his dramatic works.
The translation by Ann Dunnigan is a good one and enables the non-Russian reader to fully enjoy Chekhov's simple but beautiful style.

Chekhov may have been from a different culture and era, however, his legacy still leaves an impact on millions of readers and writers worldwide. No storyteller thus far, has been able to blend humor and tragedy in the fashion that made Chekhov so universally loved. Selected Stories is a sampling of some of his finest works. With compassion and delicacy, Chekhov writes of the lives of ordinary people who are struggling to overcome conflict, however trivial their problems may be. One story deals with a man who must teach his young son not to smoke even though he himself is a smoker. Another story describes how a middle-aged man is thought peculiar by family and friends because he has never married. These are just a few examples of how this century-old Russian literature is still relevant to today's frame of mind. Chekhov's talent cannot be overstated. His life was short but what he left behind was majestic and grand.

In the introduction to this book, some compare Chekhov's writing to lace: the beauty of his stories are as much about what's left out as what's left in. Indeed, to a certain extent, that is true. In this book you will find some of the most gently funny and heartbreakingly poignant stories ever written. His writing is almost that of a parish priest recounting the tales of his town, in that he passes no judgement on even the most vile of the characters he has created, but instead allows us to judge each character for ourselves. It's a wonderful glimpse, not only at late-Czarist Russia, but at humanity in general. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book for the illustrations. Gennady Spirin's illustrations are truly breathtaking and inspirational (for artists). Well, in a few words, this book is a work of art.
A marvellous window on the Russian past.......2001-06-25
This is a very charming book. Not only is there Chekhov's fine story about a lost dog getting involved in a circus act, but the illustrations are wonderful. Surely this is the way 19th Century St. Petersburg looked!
My daughter first found this book in the library when she was six, and it quickly became one of her favorites.

By the end of the fourth chapter I knew this was going to be one of those oh-so-rare books that I wouldn't finish, not even for the sake of the big romantic finish.
In the first five chapters I found nothing but awkward character development, forced sex, overblown hatred/jealousy and not even a smidgen of believable attraction between the protagonists. I failed to see how anything the author could have added after the fifth chapter would have changed my opinion of the repellent Alex and the lackluster Ellen (who, of course, magically loses all her inhibitions the second Alex is near).
This one goes into the recycle bin.

It was entertaining but I thought she had too many "secondary characters" in this one. I didn't see a point to having "Suzette" and her sister around. Otherwise, I liked the storyline itself. Up until the end I was wondering how it would turn out because the story was not resolved until the last couple of pages. I would have liked something more to have happened to "Lydia" other than her getting her way. I loved how Alex told her she had no idea what it meant to be celibate and kissed her to show her what it meant. I could just feel the sparks flying. Overall, an good read, just wished she would have curtailed some of the other characters.

One incident changes Ellen Drakes life she knows the danger of scandal and has vowed to live her life scandal free. She is now a companion for Rebecca attending balls and soir?es not being a part of society but not fitting in with the hired help. She is at just such a function when she is trapped in a room where a seduction begins to take place. She makes her presence known and is shocked to find Rebecca's betrothed one of the participates. Alex Marshall is as handsome as sin and a temptation Ellen soon can't ignore despite her best efforts to keep her distance. What started out as a way of keeping Alex monogamous ends up tormenting her. His kisses make her long for things that aren't hers to have...or can she have a happy ending?
Alex is shocked when Ellen tells him she wants him to give up his rakish ways for Rebecca is fianc?e. Rebecca doesn't fire his passion like Ellen does with a simple kiss. It's not long before Ellen and Alex are caught in a compromising position and things change. Alex saves Ellen when she needs him most but will he be able to save the fledgling relationship that has been slowly growing?
Ms. Holts latest romance is peppered with several secondary characters who play key parts in the romance between Alex and Ellen...almost to the point of crowding the romance out. This romance is sensual...almost erotic in nature but Alex and even Ellen are difficult characters to care about at turns. Alex is almost too arrogant and I would have liked to have seen the conflict that kept them apart curtailed a bit...without giving away details the ending saves this read. This is not her strongest effort but at the same time it's not one I'd go out of my way to avoid either.

Ellen is Rebecca's companion, hired by Lydia, Rebecca's sister, who is a sour and mean-hearted woman. Alex, Rebecca's betrothed, is a rake who intends to have as many women as he can before his marriage. Ellen is peacefully entertaining herself when Alex stumbles into the library with a woman, intending on having a tryst with her. Ellen stops him and informs him that if he does not stop his philandering she will tell Rebecca. Ellen assumes she has the upper hand until one night Alex turns the tables and gives her a small taste of passion.
Alex intends to show Ellen what passion felt like, but instead he creates a monstrous desire for her. Along with their forbidden desires, Ellen's brother, James, and Alex's brother, Nicholas, are up to no good. And then there's Lydia, who is determined to see everyone else as miserable as she is.
Just when Alex thinks he has everything he wants, Ellen attempts to leave. When they find themselves in a compromising position, everything changes. Because of their stubborn pride Alex and Julia are even more at odds now. But when Julia's life is threatened Alex saves her, however saving their relationship may prove even more difficult.
Too Tempted To Touch is an emotional and erotic story. I could feel the jealousy, desire, love or angst that the characters felt. I was very engrossed in each character's plight. Although Too Tempting To Touch is an interesting story and I really liked Alex and Ellen, I felt that all of the conflict that grew between them was unnecessarily long. However, the ending is witty and heart-warming and it had me smiling and rooting for them to put their differences aside. Fans of Cheryl Holt will really Too Tempted To Touch.

An OK Conan pastiche.......2004-12-28
This title is perhaps one of the weakest entries in the Conan series. The book plods along at an uneven pace, and far too much time is devoted to developing secondary characters. The book, however, is not completely devoid of redeeming qualities. Carpenter's knack for characterization shows through although at the expense of the action many "Conan readers" are accustomed to.
Carpenter wasn't the best of the Conan pastiche writers but he wasn't the worst either. He's far better than Roland Green for example. This book is ok, but a little slow and lacking in Howard-style action and swordplay.

After having been burned in my first venture into Tor's Conan books (Roland Green's atrocious "Conan the Valiant"), I was a little gun-shy to pick up another one. This one was at my local used bookstore for a couple of bucks, though, so I went for it.
It won't make you forget Robert E. Howard, but Carpenter's Conan is fairly authentic nonetheless. Conan may be a bit too sentimental at times, but I think that Carpenter captured his character quite nicely overall.
The plot is not overly cumbersome, Carpenter creates a few eerie moods, and if you have a good imagination, you should enjoy this book to a degree. Carpenter is bold enough to dispatch some key characters along the way and throw in some conservative plot twists, so it is not an overly predictable book. It isn't a book that you just can't put down, but you probably won't be throwing it across the room either.
And don't judge the book by its goofy cover. The ridiculous lizard creature on the cover doesn't actually make an appearance in the book, thank Crom and Mitra, nor is there a female in palace garb sitting primly on the edge of a rampaging chariot.
If you are a Conan fan, you could read a lot worse than this.

Yeah, my title states my opinion. This obviously isn't one of the better books. The summary on the back sounded cool, but it isn't that good. Better than Conan the Gladiator though. It has its moments. For example, when the ghost-kings come up from their tombs, when Conan first sneaks into the tombs, and the end is surprising. I was disappointed at how easily he killed the main villain,however. The guy starts turning into a snakeman and Conan basically throws him into the fire and stomps on him! The part where he beats up the weapons-master at the castle is pretty dumb, too. It has its good moments, but pretty weak overall. I wouldn't specifically recommend it; I only read it because I want to read every Conan book.

Dr. Givler has not only the knowledge of a medical doctor, she has personally gone through a diagnosis and the treatment for cancer. When I first read this book, it was as a reviewer for several magazines. I have purchased many copies now to give to people and unfortunately, know there will be more as long as we have the dreaded disease of cancer. If you are facing a diagnosis of cancer, please think about getting this book--or get one for someone you know who needs it. It is warm without sappy sentiment, practical, and like having a trusted medical friend for the journey.

I'm writing to tell you what comfort I received from reading your book. I read it the first time within two weeks of my husband's diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy. I have reread it again recently, and take it out when I need someone to reassure me God is in control, and to have faith. I often read sections to my husband that I feel will be of the most benefit to continue his incredibly strong belief he can beat it, no matter what the statistics say.
There is so much out there to read that I feel overwhelmed by all the information. However, very few books make you feel BETTER about this very "sucky" situation. Thank you to someone who really needed it, and appreciates it.

This book is a fantastic resource for all cancer patients, but especially for newly-diagnosed cancer patients. Written by an MD who has cancer, it provides common sense guidance for many aspects of treating and living with cancer. I highly recommend this book for patients who have just been diagnosed. Read this book before you do anything! It is also valuable for cancer patients who have been diagnosed with a recurrence. An easy read, it is well worth the few dollars you will spend to own it.

This book is incredible. First, the photography is excellent, beautifully portraying most of the recipes. The book begins with a complete listing of all of the ingredients used. It is about 6 pages of pertinent information, including pictures for some of the most obscure ingredients. The recipes cover a thorough range of the basic recipes that you may be looking for. I am Indian and am thrilled with the list. Just about every recipe is critical, they appear back-to-back and have several pictures. I will probably cook every recipe in the Indian section. That section alone makes it worth the purchase. However, it covers seven other asian cuisines in a very similar manner. It also offers enticing "melting pot" menus, mixing the cuisines. You will get the recipes you want, that you can make, with a little commentary and exquisite pictures. This is one of the best cook books I have ever seen.

This is a great book on Malaysian food. All the recipes I've tried so far turned out really well. Unfortunately only 'Halal' recipes are featured. Hence, truly original Malaysian recipes such as the 'Bah Kut Teh' and 'Pork Vindaloo' are missing because they contain pork. Was disappointed that the 'Yee Sang', an original M'sian must-have dish for the Chinese New Year, is also missing. And the 'Nasi Ayam' ('Chicken Rice') featured is not the one made popular by Hainanese migrants, but is instead the Malay equivalent. Also, note that the recipes in this book tend to be the 'gourmet' version - this means that you'll need 15 ingredients to make the same dish that your grandmother used to make using only 5 ingredients. However, the results are undeniably delicious.

Been to Malaysia and miss the food? Can't go but wonder what it tastes like? This book is for you. The recepies are authentic, easy to follow, and represent everything from "haute cuisine" to hawker food sold from street stalls. For those unfamiliar with this spicy, peppery cooking, the book includes beautiful pictures and a glossery {with photographs) of all unusual ingrediants. It was originally reccomended to me by a Malaysian friend, and I strongly support her suggestion

Definitely authentic Malaysian recipes........2003-11-20
As a Malaysian living in US, I can vouch for the authenticity of the recipes in this book. At this juncture, I would like to address some concerns raised in Arun J Gavali's review. First & foremost, Malaysia is a Muslim country where pork is not "kosher", hence the lack of pork recipes unless you're referring strictly to the foods of the Chinese ethnic group (2nd largest ethnic group in Malaysia). Beef & other meat recipes are limited owing to the fact that the landscape of Malaysia does not permit wide pasturage for raising cattle. Chicken & fish are much more widely consumed. Most of the fresh ingredients such as turmeric, galangal, pandan (screwpine) leaves, kaffir lime leaves, daun kesum & wild ginger bud, can be found in Thai or Vietnamese grocery stores. They may come fresh or frozen, depending on the store. As for keeping them fresh, freeze them by wrapping them first in parchment or in another plastic bag, before putting them into ziploc freezer bags, to prevent freezer burns. I've been successful at keeping them fresh for a couple of months this way. Better yet, seal them in vacuum packs (if you have one of those vacuum packing machines) before freezing. I always separate them into smaller portions before freezing so that I only have to defrost what I would need later for cooking. You can get a rough idea of how much you would need each time by going through the recipes in the book, especially where the curries are concerned. I only anticipate difficulty in locating ingredients for 1 recipe, Nasi Kerabu (rice with fresh herbs), since some of the herbs listed are truly indigenous to Malaysia only. Apart from this, there's nothing to prevent you from enjoying other recipes in this book, especially with the suggested substitutes. The book does present a very good cross-section of the most popular Malaysian foods and serve more than adequately to introduce the novice to the very wide variety of food found in Malaysia. To include more recipes would be overwhelming in my opinion, to most people who aren't familiar with or even unsure of the outcome of these recipes. If you truly want to try more, you should travel to Malaysia and plan on feasting everyday while you're there. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to try some great Malaysian food.
Excellent for some recipes... worth considering other books........2003-03-30
I started with the Food of Asia, which I think is excellent. I decided to check into some specific cuisines, such as Malaysia, of the seven cuisines that are presented in the Food of Asia. I am a little torn.
The individual books in the "Food of" series by Periplus have extensive introductions. There are not as many recipes as I had hoped for. The ingredients list, along with the accompanying commentaries, are about the same, with an equivalent number of photos, as the Food of Asia. The Food of Asia contains many of the recipes, however, some do not have a photo.
I would have hoped for more recipes and more vegetables. The recipes that are worth the purchase: Spicy Rice with Chicken, Hot Sour Fish Curry, Spicy Shrimp In A Sarong, Butter Shrimp, Black Pepper Crab, Indian Fish Curry, Portuguese Baked Fish, Chicken Satay, Spicy Barbacued Chicken, Barbacued Chicken Wings, Dry Mutton Curry, Chicken Curry, Devil Chicken Curry, Chicken Rice, Srir-Fried Peas, Snake Gourd and Spicy Pumpkin. There are few if any beef, pork or other meats, and many of the vegetables will not be found in a grocery store.
The ingredients list is thourough, with substitutions for (or omission of) many hard-to-find ingredients, but is a little more stringent than other books I have read. For example, shallot or onion was offered as a substitute for asofoetida in a different book, whereas here no substitute is given. On the contrary, macadamia nuts are suggested as a substitute, or even almonds or cashews, for candlenuts. But again, the Food of Asia offered asparagus as a substitute for fern tips, and zuchini or green beans for snake gourd, both of which can be hard if not impossible to find. The books on separate cuisines do not have such substitutions.
A word of caution, many of the ingredients are difficult to find even online. There are also several "fresh" ingredients, such as kaffir lime leaves, salam leaves, duan kasum, etc, that have to be shipped fresh and stay for only a short while. Other cuisines, like Thai, have more availability of authentic ingredients as well as spice mixes that really help save time.
I think that the Food of Asia may be a better starting point and that searching for other cookbooks that have versions of the really good recipes plus many more recipes is advisable.

Don't Judge This Book By Its Cover.......2004-06-11
What a crime that this excellent design book's weakest, tackiest page is the only one that most people will ever see: its cover. I grabbed this book as a joke, because its awful first page promised a Saturday afternoon of unintended laughs and head-shaking at astounding misuses of Photoshop. But the joke was on me--there's a treasure buried under that Photoshop-ravaged front cover.
The Designer's Guide to Astounding Photoshop Effects begins with a brief but concise history of photo manipulation, which was first achieved with physical tools like airbrushes and blades. A heroic propaganda poster from the 1950s and a silly, contemporary Weekly World News cover (headlined "LIPOSUCTION FOR WORLD'S BIGGEST BABY" ) invoke completely different psychological responses and seem as though they have nothing in common, but both were achieved by the deliberate manipulation of reality and are landmarks in the evolution of the technique. It was a great idea to include this section, because most Photoshop books show no interest in the historic or psychological relevance of manipulation; they just get right to the showoff stuff. Because, let's face it, that's what most Photoshop users want.
The Designer's Guide... is geared more toward people who appreciate photo manipulation when it's done with style, grace and purpose than people who are looking to lens-flare their every document. There are some tips and they're all pretty good, but you have to accept the fact that most Photoshop wizards--like traditional magicians--have no intention of revealing the secrets behind their best tricks. So if you're like me, you'll find yourself doing a lot of backwards engineering to figure out how they created those astonishing effects.
But before attempting any of the tricks in this or any other Photoshop book, I think it's important to ask yourself, For what purpose?. A great Photoshop artist should use his skills only when necessary, and always with discipline. Because it's just too easy and tempting to get carried away, and wind up making the kind of mess they made with this cover.

This highly technical read is not for the mere curious reader or fan of this great American woman. This book contains a vivid picture of the search for America's sweetheart of 1937,Amelia Earhart and her navigator ,Fred Noonan. An intricate compilation of radio transmissions provides a picture of an overwhelmed search party, miscommunicated information and an under skilled pilot. This is not the whole picture and if one seeks a glimpse into the woman behind the incident this is not the book for you

A captivating narrative & chronicle of the flying life and times of pilot Amelia Earhart, both researched 18 years and written by Exec. Dir. of TIGHAR, an Internat. Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. We are provided detailed accounts of Earhart's two world flight attempts, neither successful, with the aviatrix's last contact being July 2, 1937 while enroute to Howland Isle from Lae, New Guinea and thence to California.
Glimpses are given of Amelia Earhart's quest for notoriety during her earlier years which found her intrigued by flying machines, seeking adventure, finding celebrity status & desiring increased role for American women. But, it is not a bibliography or even a book about Amelia. It is a book of Amelia's monomaniacal attachment to flying, her aeronautical skill confines, that emphasizes her attempts to encircle the globe, imprima her 2nd attempt going Eastward, departing Oakland, California on May 19, 1937 accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan in her Lockheed Electra 10E twin engine aircraft. There is detailed & documented accountings of the massive search by US Coast Guard and Naval ships & planes and detailed reference to ships' logs of communications, etc., and interviews with Ham Radio operators who credibly appear to have identified her signals. The many B/W photographs, maps and the DVD are commendatory to this scholarly study. A few readers may find the detailed readings, etc., of the ships' logs and radiocommunication transmission times and references to frequencies and harmonics confusing & tedious, but the author's intentions to present the factual data is preserved.
Amelia Earhart on Fantasy Island?.......2007-06-29
I have followed Mr. Gillespie's search for years, and it is, sadly, largely based on wishful thinking instead of facts, such as the fuel capacity of Amelia's Lockheed 10E Electra. Simply put, there is NO WAY it could have reached where he claims it is. The book is an interesting read, and reasonably well done, and there are some opposing viewpoints presented. Factually, though, it is an illusion (one that has paid Mr. Gillespie quite well for a long time). An entertaining read, but not historical research-just a flight of fancy--
Finding Amelia.......2007-03-19
The book is a good chronicle of the last flight, and what is (and isn't known). While there isn't anything really new that hasn't been covered before, the book is a good compliment to others previously published on the Earhart story. The focus on (mis)communications highlights the thread of errors that lead to the tragedy. The inclusion of the disc (a nice touch!) containing the source data allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.

This book focuses on the popular theory that Amelia Earhart was engaged in covert operations in the Pacific at the request of the Roosevelt Administration and the Bristish Government. This book offers navagational information including lots of maps and aerial photos, including one the author feels sure was taken by Fred Noonan. Among the text you will find references to the British involvment, both financially and technically with the flight, and information about a US/British spy residing on Hull Island where Amelia and Fred landed and were relocated into protective custody. Transcription of document between Secretary of Treasury and E. Roosevelt's personal secretary concerning the flight. Explanation as to how Fred Noonan's widow and George Putnam were able to get the two fliers declared dead within the first year of disappearance.

I highly recommend David Bowman's new book, Legerdemain.
It is the most thorough and objective collection of just about all the
evidence and theories regarding what happened, or did not happen, to
Amelia Earhart that I have ever seen...literally a meticulous file of all
available old and newly discovered and rigorously analyzed information
about the disappearance and possible survival of Amelia Earhart.
It is thoroughly catalogued and documented, and a resource that no
sincere researcher should pass up making available to themselves.

Excellent 320 page book with photos and documents on every page. This is the best account I have seen about the facts behind Amelia's last flight, disappearance over the Pacific and interviews by those who worked on her plane/knew her or were on the searched for Amelia and Fred, July 2, 1937. For the first time information is available about Fred Noonan, Amelia's naviagor that disappeared along with her.There is a chronology of Amelia's last flight collected from thousands of pages of records from the Navy and Coast Guard ships' logs, White House records, and data from sources including Western Electric, Lockheed Corporation and the Japanese Government

This is the account of Robert Myers experiences as a regular visitor to Oakland Airport in the spring of 1937. Only 15 at the time, Myers met and was befriended by Amelia Earhart. This is a must-read for Earhart researchers, as it gives an "inside" look at the main participants in Earhart's last flight. Myers claimed to have met and talked with them all--Earhart, GP Putnam, Fred Noonan and Paul Mantz. This book has some startling revelations. Myers claimed to turn on his father's shortwave radio on the evening of July 2, 1937 and hear the radio traffic from the ITASCA, as well as all of Earhart's transmissions. He listened all that night and heard Earhart ditch her plane. For the next nine days, he listened to the radio whenever he could, finally hearing in amazement Earhart and Noonan being captured by the Japanese. His first thought was "Hurray, she's been saved. She'll be home soon." But Earhart never returned. Or did she?
After that, no one would believe what he had heard over the radio.
Later on, in 1970, Myers recognized Earhart in a newsreel--as Irene Bolam. If true, this book is an important historical document. It is told in a straight-forward, unaffected manner and seems highly credible. It also has some remarkable illustrations.
