Great Book!.......2007-08-17
A great book of mystery with dealings in herbs! I loved it- An easy read, kept me up turning pages! I love all of her stuff! Check out the entire series!
Beware! Hard to resist- a must 'have' for China Bayles fans!.......2007-02-13
As usual Susan manages to draw us into the world of China Bayles with no effort.
I love how each one of these books can stand alone without you actually having to read the rest of the series- Although who could resist them all??
I must admit a sleepless night and day as I just could not put this book down.
As each book ends I find myself always satisfied but wanting to reach for the next installment.
Lets hope the next book comes soon- a must for all China Bayles fans!
Puzzled.......2006-08-30
This is the first China Bayles mystery I've read. I'm somewhat puzzled and dismayed by a couple of things so far (I'm about 1/3 of the way into the book): the abrupt cut-off of Brian's curiosity about some gay men in Massachusetts by his father, and Alana Montoya's reference to the woman who was murdered in Louisiana as a black woman which doesn' have any bearing on the woman's story as it's told. Maybe these issues get brought up again somewhere else in the book, but right now I'm not too optimistic about it. What's going on?
Number 14? Who keeps track by numbers? Track them by fun in reading them..........2006-08-27
I always enjoy going back and getting one of Albert's mysteries. Her books and her way of life, at least to me, sounds very down to earth. China and her friends sound quite a bit like the people who lived in my little town in CA while I was growing up (way before Chevron came in and ruined the area of Danville)! You go into the local stores and see people who you know and have grown up with, and of course, that's how the gossip gets around. Unfortunately, as a deaf person, I too often miss the grapevine, that I know my mother enjoyed while growing up. People don't live much like that any more...where you take time from weeding in your yard to talk to the neigbor over the fence.
Anyway, this time it's Brian's turn to find a skelaton. Thank heavens it was a skelaton and not a body. I am not real keen on having anyone who isn't a criminologist finding bodies, especially kids and teenagers...and it is happening way too often. This one was in a cave, and could have been mistaken for the archaeological dig Brian's currently involved in his search for scientific meaning.
Of course, China and company cannot keep their noses out of the business of the sheriff and local authorites, but to be fair, this time, the trouble kind of came to them and not vice versa. Albert weaves a tale about a couple of old ladies in town who have lived there forever, and seem to be involved with this new finding, as well as dictating how the local theatre group is to be run because they donated a building and money to make a new theatre. We had some of those old ladies in our town, and a few weird houses, with trees outback that were deliberately tied together (because they had been used as an Indian burial ground...anyone who lived in that house down at the bottom of our street never seemed to have much luck. They would get arrested or be forced out of the house...
I think people enjoy reading Albert's mysteries partly because of this old town flavor she brings to her books. I also enjoy all the snippets of learning she brings to her books about herbs...use some of them to help with my neuropathy sometimes!
Better then the drugs the doctors have tried...

CHINA DIGS UP SOME BONES.......2006-06-06
DEAD MAN'S BONES is the thirteenth entry in the popular China Bayles series and in keeping with that unlucky number, Albert delivers a story with a little too much going on; a lot of the subplots interfere with the main mystery and even though Albert's prose and narrative are up to par, the book suffers due to this overstuffing. China's son Brian is on an archaeological dig when they discover some bones that are only about thirty years old and it is soon discovered a murder has been committed. But joining this plot are: a community theatre production written by a local spinster about her wealthy father; the spinster sisters with mysterious behavior; a forensic specialist who isn't what she seems; Ruby's mysterious new boyfriend with a shady past; Blackie and Sylvia's relationship; an illegal immigrant; a new partnership maybe? At any rate, many of the subplots are left unresolved, obviously to be continued in future books. But Albert just gave us too much and the resolution to the mystery is fairly predictable and she resorts to a cop out ending for our villain.

Unexpected Hit.......2007-04-27
I really and truly did not expect to like this book, I picked it up on a whim but I was beautifully(not a strong enough word) surprised. Kira, Jason, Gram, Travis and Zane, even Billy. It's not.... this book has left me speechless I can just say it was a great read and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
A Bewitching and Sexy Read!!!!.......2007-03-17
A light hearted wonderful read from an author that speaks to the reader like she is speaking to a friend. This is one of the few books I've read that has characters who talk like you and me, or at least what we wish we would say.
Kira has had her share of problems and heartbreak but a jock is the last person she wants in her life. In walks recently injured hockey great Jason Pickering Goddard and her life as she knows it gets turned upside down. Together they need to help out Pickering Foundation and especially an orphanage.
This book has it all! Wonderful story line you will never get bored with. There are moments in this book where you will laugh out loud and moments where it will steam up you windows. A heart warming ending witch I hope will leave you with tears rolling out of your eyes as it did me.
Couldn't even finish it.......2007-01-31
Slow to start and confusing to read. I literally had to look at the page numbers to make sure that I didn't skip a page the writing was so disjointed. I skimmed through the parts that I didn't read and laughed out loud at some of the horrid dialog. I read my husband the declaration of love from the male protagonist to the female and we both laughed until we cried.
Yucky book.
The Witch and the Hockey Player--what a combo!.......2006-12-19
This Blair witch added a layer of the paranormal with an admitted wand-wielding witch and a haunted Newport Mansion. The crows made me laugh out loud as did the antics of the boys from the 'home' whenever they appeared in the story. The sizzle between Kira Fitzgerald and Jason Goddard jumps off the page and makes you keep turning those pages, because you have to find out what happens next. As with most of Blair's books, this story touches on the importance of family and of tolerance. The close bond between the hockey player, also winner of the best kisser in America reality show, btw, and his grandmother is refreshing and strengthens Jason's appreciation for family as does Kira's large Irish family in Boston. All in all, a most unique twist of a witch story that I enjoyed thoroughly, and couldn't put down until I was done. Don't miss The Kitchen Witch or The Scot, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Outstanding! I couldn't put it down. SIX STARS!.......2006-09-29
My Favorite Witch is a well-written, heartwarming, funny contemporary romance. Kira is a witch who dropped her cheating fiancee and is getting a new start as a special events coordinator in at a foundation that owns several mansions in Newport, Rhode Island. Jason is a hockey player off the ice due to a knee injury suffered when a bimbo crashed his car with him inside. Now he's the director of special events at the same foundation. Both have sworn off the opposite sex.
But don't think this is same old, same old. The magical twists and turns in this story will keep you reading long into the night. Jason is sexy and complicated, but he loves the grandmother who raised him, and who is actually playing matchmaker. His heart has also been touched by one small orphan named Travis, and by Kira, though he fights it. Kira is feisty, stubborn, independent, has a good mind, and she loves the orphans at St. Anthony's, the boys' school the foundation supports.
This romance is a thorough delight, and the comedic moments are laugh out loud funny, not to mention the ghost, the murder of crows, and a Halloween night the residents of Newport will not soon forget.
I laughed, I cried, I cheered and I closed the book feeling as if I'd fallen in love myself. This is one sexy read and I loved every bit of it.
I can't wait until The Scot, the Witch and the Wardrobe comes out in December. Awesome, awesome story. A winner.

Book Description
This book guides you toward reconsidering the field of health economics as it is taught and practiced. It discusses and analyzes the assumptions that must be met for a competitive market to be successful, concludes that these assumptions are not met in the healthcare field, and provides a number of applications for healthcare policy.
Among the policy issues addressed are:
* Effects of managed care and capitation on patient care
* Access to care by the poor
* Medical savings accounts
Customer Reviews:
Fair analysis.......2005-09-24
Rice strikes the critical balance between review, criticism and prescription of important topics in health care economics. For example, in chapter 5 he refers to the major contributions of libertarian (Nozick) utilitarian and normative (Rawls) thinkers on the question of health equality and health resource allocation. His prescription is relatively egalitarian, but he offers a thorough discussion of alternative ideas. His review of the details of health economics (and the unique challenges that health poses to anyone interested in treating it as a commodity) are insightful. An excellent reader for anyone interested in reconsidering the market model of health care.
Superb analysis.......2003-12-13
Dr. Rice's book is an outstanding analysis of the realities that exist within our competitive market economy. Other reviewers of this text have failed to comprehend the complexities inherent in health care and health economics. The competitive market economy in many instances works in opposition to issues of health, as Dr. Rice eloquently points out throughout his book, explaining many of the health policy dilemmas that our society is currently confronted with .
Fried Rice.......2001-05-22
Rice's primary purpose of this short book appears to be to counter Paul Feldstein's Health Care Economics text. Mr. Rice must have spent all weekend writing this disappointing book, which meanders through the whole spectrum of health care socialism.

Customer Reviews:
Poor imitation.......2004-01-25
I thought this was going to be the BEST of the Famous Monsters I read as a kid, but none of that classic material was included, and the imagination of former publisher James Warren and editor Forrest J Ackerman is sorely missed. This is just a re-hash of the few issues of the magazine published without them. The writing is a weak imitation of Ackerman's lively style, ripping off patented puns like "You Axed for It" and "Beast Wishes". Even the cover is a 5th rate copy of a painting from the original magazine. I hear the current publisher of this volume lost a lawsuit for stealing Ackerman's nom de plume, "Dr. Acula". The Famous Monsters of the '50s and '60s was a cool phenomenon once, but the '90s incarnation is a pointless anachronism, since only nostalgic baby-boomers like myself are interested, and there are so many superior efforts dealing with the subject on the market now. Famous Monsters without Forry Ackerman is like a Beatles reunion without John, Paul, George, or Ringo.
Nice Packaging of Recycled Material.......2001-07-24
For horror fans who have to have all issues for their collections, this one will pass as a "good" one to have, but it ain't great. Regular FMOF subscribers already have seen most, if not all, of what's between the pages. I could live without it.
A BEAST SELLER.......2001-06-30
Some reviewers of this issue cry that former editor FJ Ackerman isn't included in it. Why should he be? This is a collection of great features from the new FM that Mr. Ackerman had nothing to do with. He quit the magazine in 1995 and the features in THE BEST OF FM, VOL #1 have nothing to do with him. Ackerman fans should go read old back issues. If they don't like the new FM, nobody is forcing them to read it. But discriminating fans of classic horror films will find this collection to be an outstanding, entertaining and informative read.
noneofyourbuzness.......2000-10-22
This was the best monster film gulde I've ever read and I'm glad I got it
Book Description
In this pioneering publication, Winterthur's renowned quilt collection is presented through dazzling color photographs that showcase rich fabrics and skillful needlework techniques. The letters of twenty-three-year-old Mary Remington, a dedicated quilt maker, and the extraordinary whitework quilt she made in 1815the only known example of an American quilted coat of armsprovide themes for the book, which looks at the quilts through the lives of their makers. Among the reproductions includedmany are being seen here for the first timeare quilts that express religious faith or commemorate marriages and other family connections; quilts in support of political candidates, made by women who could not vote; quilted bedspreads with matching quilted valances and dressing-table covers pictured in room settings; and much more.
This exquisite presentation provides a rare opportunity to view the strengths of the Winterthur quilt collectionhighlighting examples from the period of the early American republicand to understand how the economics and politics of the time affected quilt materials and design in the early nineteenth century.
Customer Reviews:
Historical perspective on quilting focusing on the collection of H. F. DuPont @ Winterthur.......2007-06-05
My wife is a "quilter". While I was on the East Coast attending a family reunion, one of my cousins, with whom I was staying, asked if I wanted to join her in a tour of Winterthur, close to where she lives. I accepted the invitation and totally enjoyed it especially the quilt collection there. I am not a quilter myself - there are some males interested in and "artists" in this art form, but I have become acquainted with it through my wife's interest in it. When I saw this book, examined it and checked out other's reviews of it, I decided it would make a nice birthday gift for my wife. I liked the fact that it dealt with the history of this art form here in the US, the quilt makers of particular quilts, and the progression of technique in "constructing" them. To me it would appeal to my wife's knowledge of this art form through the collection of the H. F. DuPont family.
A Chance to See Magnificent Quilts from the Winterthur Collection.......2007-03-17
"Quilts from a material world" is a long-awaited opportunity to view some of the finest quilts in Winterthur's collections, but also to have them expertly placed in social, economic, mercantile, and political context by Linda Eaton's well-researched and readable narrative. This book is a must for quilt and fabric historians, American history buffs, and members of the general reading public who are interested in knowing more about American material culture (in both senses of the word "material"). It is an excellent contribution to the study of fabrics and quilts.
beautiful and fascinating.......2007-01-26
i have barely had time to savour this book. there is so much to interest quilters and non-quilters that it is hard to know where to start to review.
the photographs of the quilts are wonderful, with lots of details. the textile history is thorough and accurate, including a fascinating section on the different techniques of putting pattern on cloth. the history of the quilters is, yes, fascinating, including letters written by one quilter to her fiance and later husband in the early part of the 19th century.
anyone interested in early america, early manufacturing, and the lives of our forebears will enjoy this book as much as any quilter.

As a collector of early 1800's chintz quilts, I found this book very important, informative, and most of all beautiful. The quilts are gorgeous and quality of photos is top-notch. If you like early chintz, you will love this book!
Comprehensive information on cotton printing........1999-07-20
In addition to pictures of lovely quilts, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of the history of cotton printing before 1850. Quilt enthusiasts will find this useful for dating fabrics, but it also provides a handy summary for textile historians.

When you look past the cover of Martha Stewart's latest effort, you find it's not all about framing your fern collection. (Whew!) It is, however, about defining your home's style using accessories that look expensive but (generally) aren't. There's some very practical and budget-conscious advice here in the chapters about pictures, tables and stools, lamps and shades, shelves, screens and mirrors, and pillows and throws. You can disguise the humble origins of inexpensive adjustable shelving by adding wood trim around the edges and painting everything, including the metal standards and braces, to match the wall color. You can break up or conceal space with screens you make yourself from plain wood panels or old windows. You can update small outdoor tables with do-it-yourself mosaic tile that goes on in one piece. You can, of course, make a large framed entryway mirror from an $800 slab of mirror glass, as Martha does-- but really, no one will check your bank statement to see how much you spent, and it will reflect just as clearly with inexpensive hardware-store mirror glass. Some of the best projects are for sofa pillows, bed and table linens, and lampshades. Though Martha's voice isn't much in evidence in the text, her concepts are definitely here: the instructions are simple and straightforward and the look clean, comfortable and unfussy. --Barrie Trinkle
Customer Reviews:
Decorating Details Marth Stewart.......2006-08-16
Really nice book, to read and to have as a coffee table book
I had a bad experience.......2004-06-10
I spent a few weeks following her suggestions and thousands on the materials. We had a dinner party to show off the ideas I used and some people were polite with compliments. My husband found a few of our "friends" laughing at Martha's ideas.
A friend later confided that some of the people thought the Martha ideas I implemented were pathetic. I changed most of the things back and my husband was furious. I cried for a week. Maybe she deserves jail time after my experience.
Interesting, practical ideas.......2004-04-05
This book is the follow-on to "How to Decorate," Martha's first book. This book concentrates on the small details: how to display pictures, how to arrange your collections, and so on. The introductory chapter on how to display pictures and photographs is particularly good, giving ideas (complete with beautiful photographs) on how to display pictures and explaining principles such as where to place pictures, how to arrange them, and why certain arrangements of pictures work in certain places and not others.
The book emphasizes Martha's trademark, which is finding inexpensive but beautiful pieces at garage sales, refinishing them, and adapting them to new uses. Many of the ideas she presents, such as refinishing an old footstool and turning it into a stereo stand, are practical and attractive.
Another winner by Martha.......2004-01-16
In the long line of excellently crafted books, Decorating Details qualifies as very useful, quality speaks highly for Martha. Detailed photos on top quality paper, have become a mainstay with her books. The book covers pictures, tables & stools, lamps & shades, shelves, screens & mirrors, and pillows & throws. Each section has detailed instructions, for making in making lamp shades there are detailed photos, as well as, written instructions for drafting, decorating, and making a lamp shade. Decorating Details give simple and easy ideas for decorating any space.
simple, uncomplicated home living.......2000-08-24
I'm in the process of simplifying and optimizing my home's living quarters. I have to admit that I get depressed after looking at other decorating books - for instance, where rooms have dreamy coordinating wallpaper, border, paint & fabrics. This is a decorating book that doesn't stress me out wishing I had a particular piece of furniture or a million dollars. It's the projects themselves that remind you don't need to have to go and buy expensive things around the world. With a little creativity and some elbow grease, you can pick up items from the local home or fabric warehouse and keep it simple. I'd like to make the folding screen (p. 98) from lightweight boards, hinges and casters. I may cover them with fabric instead of paint. But I'll probably start with the linen pillowcases (p. 130) simply because I've got the materials for it. Notice that all the rooms are quite simple. The living room has a couch, a couple of chairs, some nesting tables. period. The projects are "light bulbs" that go on and make us remark: "why didn't I think of that?" OR: "that's what I am aiming for."
Book Description
Identity Design Sourcebook is a vast collection of identity projects broken down into three sections: corporate identities, online identities, and identity redesign projects.
Section One: How to land, work with, and keep large corporate clients
Corporate design projects are some of the most lucrative and highly sought after graphic design projects available. This section explores the important role graphic design plays as part of a strategy for big business success and offers designers business-smart information on how to land, work with, and keep, large corporate clients no matter what the size of the design firm.
From BP, to Muzak, corporate identity projects are presented from the ground up. Top designers share their processes in creating these corporate identities from initial client meetings and planning, through logo and brand development, to a wide variety of identity applications including the electronic realm. Text highlights the strengths of each project, and how the graphic design process and approach made for business success as well as tips on the best ways to attract, land, and work with corporate clients (and garner return business).
Section Two: How to design for your online audience whether you?re working with online companies seeking to create and sustain online brands or with established companies struggling to migrate already-known and trusted brands to the web.
Brand-loyalty is the holy grail of business everywhere and that business is increasingly e-business. What makes an on-line brand strong? What are the potential pitfalls and untapped power sources for designers of on-line brands? How do you translate an existing brand to the world of the Internet? This section gets to the bottom of the secrets of brand design and explores the graphic techniques that help make on-line brands strong. By focusing on graphic identity, and how it contributes to the success of the e-brand. Each case study will be illustrated with the online logo, offline logo (if applicable), and screen shots of the website. There may also be sketches, or other materials illustrating the brand.

Book Description
Janet Lee James was just twenty-three years old and just beginning a career as a rock ‘n’ roll disc-jockey when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Hoping she’d part of the vast majority who are able to lead full, productive lives relatively undisturbed by the disease, she took off alone for the wilds of Alaska, leaving home, work and family behind to live out her dream of a life filled with excitement and adventure.
Janet James’s penchant for black humor, cold beer and handsome men results in numerous outsized tales. Her story is a frank, detailed account of life with a profound disability -- a rare example of what MS can do. But through it all, she reminds us that life, regardless of its circumstances, truly is whatever we choose to make it.

WORTH THE MONEY ...........2007-06-04
I was on the fence about buying this book due to what seemed may be mostly about MS and it's horrors . But, took a chance and am glad I did . I realize it was first published in 1993 and here it is 2007 and I just got around to it .
I was captivated by Ms. James sheer gutsiness ( is that a word ? )to leave the safety of her home and family to pursue a dream she might have otherwised put off like the rest of us do , thinking we have all the time in the world . She made me laugh , and made me shake my head at some of her antics before MS got a real hold on her . amazing adventure ..worth your time and $$$ .
the last 1/3 of the book was un-nerving tho . I'm happy I didn't read it as a young girl , i would have been looking for every symptom . I learned more about MS then i wanted to also ....all the promises to her and every patient of that time over 30 years ago ...saying a cure was probably going to be found in a few years with all the research . How sad . they are no closer to a cure now then 30 years ago .
I would have been terrified to go it alone in a state such as Alaska with no real friends waiting for me knowing that I had MS yet not knowing what to truly expect from it as being newly diagnosed and each case different.
I do have many questions tho , BUT those I wrote in a letter to her home . I hope she is still with us . In any case ...God Bless and may she find peace & happiness wherever she is .
Don't read this if you want MS sugar-coated........2003-10-30
What an excellent, excellent, excellent book and a brilliant author. The author had the courage to share the often unspeakable truths of what can happen, which doctors NEVER tell you about. She also has a warm and charming way of infusing humor and inspiration so others to gain a sense of hope and to "go for their dreams and make them happen. I can't think of a gutsier auther!
I loved it and would love to meet her!
One Particular Harbor.......2001-03-29
This book is great - positiveley the best book I've ever read. It follows the story of Janet, a woman with MS. Instantly, you feel as if Janet is an old friend. A good book for when you're feeling frustrated with the world and wishing you could do like Janet did...fly away to Alaska. A true story of adventure!
A positive, funny, honest and very in depth look at MS..........1999-11-21
I have read all sorts of books on MS--- Medical journals, personal accounts, alternative healing.. This wonderful book brought me to new heights in my understanding of the disease.. I wanted to jump on a plane to Alaska and pick up where Janet left off! I loved her bravery, her honesty and especially her sincerity. I, too, am a vagabond and traveler with MS... One of my favorite books ever on the subject!
Finally, an upbeat book regarding MS!.......1998-01-15
A gutsy, funny, sensitive young woman takes readers to Alaska where we learn to love the great state and Janet. This book is a joy for everyone and will remain with you long after the final word is read. See you at the Salty Dawg! Thanks Janet.
