Jacquie Joseph's Defensive Softball Drills is a compilation of some of the most basic skills necessary for development of a successful defensive player. The drills emphasize proper fundamentals and are adaptable to players of all skill levels. I use the drills in the book with my high school players as part of my defensive drill period, and our team is as solid defensively as any.

I coach girls 19u and used this book to set up my practices. I found the drills very good and helped to teach the girls ball control. I found that alot of the drills help shape the skills of the players. By the end of our season the girls were showing skills they themselves never knew they had. I feel this book made me an effective coach.

Where do you go for softball fielding practice drills when you're a coach trying to teach certain skills? After looking at many sources, my vote is for this book. Dozens and dozens of great drills for every position. The girls on my 10U team loved the drills, had fun and learned a lot.

I bought this book to look for new and interesting drills for an 8 and under softball All-Star team and I was not dissapointed. This book is filled with great drills which are easy to apply to all ages. As you read and look at the drill illustrations you will repeatedly say "What a great drill" Many drills in this book can be directly applied to baseball. Everybody I have shown this book to wants one.

Watch your purses... and your kingdoms!.......2002-03-19

Three clans seem to stand on the very fringes of Cainite society. Not because they are lone wanders like the Gangrel, nor because they follow a path of corruption like the Followers of Set. These Cainites are the margin simply because they are too difficult to control or deal with. The Ravnos follow a path that only the gypsy can fully understand. Nosferatu cling to the shadows, shunned due to their appearance. The Malkavian are avoided for they are fully mad and seek to know "Why?" By far these are three of the most difficult clans to play because of their marginality. This volume lets players know the deep intricacies of each clan and how each survives the Long Nights while being almost shunned by mortal, and Cainite.

Ravnos are fueled with the blood of wanderers. They move where ever their winds or whims take them. To many they are seen as a nuisance, or even worse as vagabond thieves that or only good for execution. How little they see this clan may be more closely knit than all others because of their treatment. How few notice these Cainites are everywhere. They can walk around as if unnoticed because all others wish to shun and avoid them. The Charlatans are masters at deception, and their section serves to illuminate the vast ability at trickery they possess. Their chapter holds not only more Chimestry abilities, but also a new background to help a Charlatan avoid prying eyes of mortal, Church, or even Cainite.

Next are those atrocious looking Nosferatu. Each carries an ancient curse to twist their bodies into monsters while also twisting their hearts into something else. Nosferatu are the less seen and less understood of the thieves. They possess powers to communicate over distances that boogie the mind. They almost have an Internet before electricity is even discovered. This section delves into their advances in Obfuscation as well as giving more backgrounds for the Nosferatu to cultivate his or her network of information. No secret will ever be safe with these Cainites around.

The last clan in this volume are the Malkavian. Just as a Nosferatu is twisted and deformed on the outside, the minds of the Malkavian are likewise twisted. Each Madman sees the world from a very different point of view. This section takes their madness out of the comic realms and puts the dark edge that they have always had back into the clan. Instead of lunatics running around the street dressed as clowns, these are brooding, plotting, methodical Cainites. Each seeking answers to an age old question, yet never finding what they need. This chapter expands their knowledge and power letting players fully enjoy the painful madness of these tortured souls.

In summary, if you need to create memorable characters from the margin, this is the book you need. The clan specific applications of disciplines will grant fresh life to overused, well-known disciplines. Adding this to any core books can only help increase the dynamics of a game. Enjoy, and just keep asking yourself... "Why?"

Essential for caregivers.......2003-04-24

This highly detailed and easily read volume seems to cover every consideration and situation that could arise in caring for an elderly person. The emphasis is on in-home maintenance of the elderly, specifically parents, although one chapter is devoted to selecting and monitoring a nursing home. The book gives the impression of being able to prepare the reader for any situation and to help him cope with whatever comes up.

The point is made throughout that caregivers need to avail themselves of the many resources that exist to help them with information and hands-on help. The idea that taking on the responsibility for an ailing or aging parent means that the caregiving offspring do everything by themselves, while simultaneously continuing to meet the demands of their own lives and families, is shown to be destructive to the caregiver as well as in many instances impractical.

One element in successful eldercare is keeping up with exactly what is happening with the elderly person and how to cope with the problems it may present. Thorough documentation of everything is stressed, such as physical conditions and medications, prescriptions, diet, etc. Forms are presented to simplify this, along with checklists of things to do in various situations.

A liberal inclusion of anecdotes from caregivers around the U.S. reveals the many difficulties and rewards experienced by those engaged in looking after their elders. Web sites and addresses are given for various agencies, as well as the authors of the book.

There were many anecdotes in the book that sounded like they were taken from my own personal experience. It was comforting to know that there are others with similar issues. I came away with many new ideas to try and make my situation more tolerable. I would recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in a comparable situation.

This book ia all you need to know about eldercare and elder caregiver responsibilities and options before, during and after any sort of institutional or home care considerations. The personal insights given by people from around the country was also very helpful and informative. Eldercare 911 is required reading if you're considering or are actually in an eldercare mode.

As a health care professional in the field of aging for the past 17 years, I found "Eldercare 911" to be concise, clear and most of all, realistic about the area of caring for an aging parent or relative. I believe the authors have an excellent sense of what really goes on between adult children and their parents--the good and the bad. They are also not afraid to tackle the area of resistance--what should you actually do when your loved one says "No! I don't want that home care worker!" or, "What do you mean you want me to stop driving?" This book offers real solutions for the real world. I would recommend this book for caregivers and professionals in the field of aging. It is an invaluable resource

If you are giving care to an elder or you are contemplating taking on this task, you must read this book. If you know anyone caring for an elder, do them a BIG favor and tell them about this book, or better yet, give them a copy. Even in the best of times, caregiving can be overwhelming. This book is full of information vital for improving quality of life for both the elder and her/his caregiver. Another great contribution is the COMFORT the book offers caregivers -- reading it is as good as getting a hug from the authors, who are obviously experts who care.

Ingredient lists give measures by weight (ounces), volume (cups), and grams, and oven temperatures in Fahrenheit and Centigrade. Some may find this thoroughness distracting, but it makes the book useful to anyone anywhere. More challenging than the careful measurements is the windy narrative form Plotkin employs in the steps for making the dishes; with so many words to wade through, the style may make finding your place difficult. Italophiles and cookbook literati, however, will not care about Plotkin's verbosity as they are blissfully transported and enlightened by the recipes and descriptions.

This is an outstanding cookbook. The recipes are interesting with some being unusual. I have cooked many of the dishes in this book often for entertaining and everyone has been impressed. I'm constantly asked where the recipes come from and if I would share them. For the most part the recipes are fairly simple and always straightforward. Fred Plotkin has obviously put much thought and care into the recipes because they always turn out, not something that can be said for most cookbooks. I highly recommend this book for the novice cook as well as the more experienced.

I bought this book and was very disappointed by the recipes. It is beautifully presented but the recipes were, in my opinion, probably not tested by the author for either flavor or correct proportion of ingredients.
For example, the Pansoti (little Ligurian raviolis) and walnut sauce recipe was a loser from start to finish. The ingredients for the pasta dough were so far out of whack as to be unusable (and that includes both the one for the actual recipe and the book's generic pasta dough recipe). The stuffing for the pansoti's (and I followed the recipe as written) was devoid of flavor and the walnut sauce (and the directions for its application to the pasta) was very poor. It had decent flavor but came out very thick and paste like, again, the result of poor, inaccurate ingredient proportions.
Given the price of this book, it is not at all a good buy.
I'm an experienced cook and because of a trip to Liguria I was excited about trying this book. Unfortunately, the book is, in my view, all show and possesses little substance. I would advise against buying it.

I found this book while searching Amazon for something on Genoa/Liguria, in hopes of learning more about my ancestral home. Mr. Plotkin's book did not disappoint. While it is mostly a cookbook (and the recipes I've made from it so far have been delisioso) I enjoy it mainly for his fond descriptions of Genoa/Liguria and its people. While there are plenty of travel books about Venice, Rome, Florence, etc., there seems to have been very little (at least that is still in print) about "La Superba." Although Twain, Dickens, and others who Plotkin quotes extensively wrote lovingly of Genoa, most modern writers have ignored her. This book helps to restore this oversight by giving this fascinating city her due. I recommend it to anyone who would like to vist Genoa/Liguria or who wants to know more about this stunning unsung region.

A wonderfully evocative book........1998-09-21

More than a cookbook, this is an evocative introduction to life on the Italian Riviera. The excellent, clear recipes sent us right to the kitchen -- and the picture Plotkin paints of Liguria sent us right to our travel agent: we've just come back from a vacation in the region, and this book proved an excellent guide.

This is a stunning book, The photographs and details of these amazing pieces By Big Bill Morris and his incredibly talented team are breathtaking. As a glassblower myself, I can only imagine the degree of skill to fashion these pieces, let alone the colours that the team is able to achieve. (they're good!)
I found myself unable to put this book down, I have been looking at it every day now for the last two weeks.
It is a MUST have for anyone interested in Glass or fine Contemporary Art/Sculpture.

I understand that Morris is onto an entirely new series of work, I can hardly wait to see it.

Art Glass to Die for,............2005-12-08

This is the most beautiful painting and sculpture- done in medium of Glass that I have ever seen- Mr. Morris draws upon pre-history to paint upon glass the most vivid primitive paintings- I tried to place a scan of one of them - so everyone could see- but alas - could not... He also does sculptures of skeltetons - in glass -like ancient burial mounds- breathtaking- cliches dont do his work justice!

Storytelling + origami = Storigami

I have always been fascinated by origami and interested in ways to make the folding experience more pleasurable especially for beginners and kids.

The models in this book is simple, very, very simple, not suitable for adults even for begineer adults. Most adults even begineers prefer simple models with a bit more details in their models, something easy to identify. Of course there are adults to prefer the simple childish elegance of simple models. Most of the models can be completed in less than 10 steps. This book is definitely not for people who prefer complicated models and those looking for new models to try out.

I bought the book with the intention of looking for new ways to enhance the teaching of origami. Usually telling stories is not for me as I do not like to speak much.

I read some of the stories in the book and was very amused by the way origami is taught with stories. It was interesting enough for me to try it out. It was interesting enough for me to order the other 2 books on origami and story telling.

The usual flow goes as follows: The story would start, at a strategic point, a fold would be used to illustrate a step in the story. You will find that the story step synch very well with the folding step and it is rather amusing too. It could raise laughter among the children. The model can end with a twist.

I find this book suitable for teachers who tell stories and wants to get the children to get more involve in the story. It is also suitable for teachers who teaches craft and wants to add another dimension into the craft.

At Home with Books - How Booklovers live with and Care for their Libraries........2007-05-08

I found this book a delightful and easy read and a great addition to my library. Every bibliophile should have a copy if only to read how others obtain so much enjoyment from their collections. I particularly liked Victor Niederhoffer's comment "I could spend a lifetime in this room and not be bored". I agree.

More than a coffee table book.......2007-05-04

I really enjoyed this book. I expected to use it primarily to get ideas for my own library. As I was browsing it, however, a couple of articles caught my eye and I started reading more. Before I knew it, I was curled up in bed reading it clear-through. It has interesting articles about different people's libraries, their collections, and a few about collecting in general. Mix in a little bit of history on books and collecting and you have one enjoyable book.

Some of the other reviews criticize this book because it seems to focus on the aesthetics of books. I must say that I agree that a library is more than how they look but that is certainly part of it - particularly in a coffee table book about home libraries. After all, I do not think that anyone would like to see photos of my aunt's double wide full of tens of thousands of paper-backs.

So the library of books all covered with white bindings may not be my taste or yours, but it is the celebration of these differences that makes this book interesting and compelling. My only complaint is that I would have liked to seen a few more average-Joe home libraries.

One of my favorite "Books about Books".......2007-02-22

This is a wonderful book for book lovers. It's primary purpose is to show how people (mostly living now) that love books chose to live with them. That is a theme throughout all the "articles". The folks profiled in this book live with their books. They surround themselves with them. Just my style!

This book has gorgeous photographs of current libraries and homes turned into "libraries" (basically just homes crammed with books so that every room has thousands). It also has short, but interesting profiles of the the booklovers who's libraries are photographed. The book is worth it for the pictures, but reading about others who love books, and learning about how they related to books and live with them is fascinating as well. Finally, the book also contains pretty good general informatin related to the care and appreciation of books. In many cases, the book even provides lists of companies that provide needed accessories, services, and tools (like covers, book repair, library ladders, etc.).

To pick a few nits: the information on book care is pretty basic, and there is little information on how an "average" book lover without unlimited financial means can build a library and care for books. The lists of information is necessarily dated, as well, but I think still worth inclusion. My biggest complaint is that there seemed to be a much larger percentage of "booklovers" profiled that were artists. The problem with that is that I am a booklover for the books themselves, not the artistic elements of the books (covers, illumination, artwork, etc.). So I didn't relate to as many of the people in the book as I wanted, because they related to books in a different way than I did - and that was the majority of people profiled. There was even one person who collected primarily journals and magazines, and had them all bound in white to match the decor of the room. For me, it's about the BOOKS! NOT about using books as an accessory for decoration.

All that being said, however, this is a book I go back to time and time again. For the pictures, for just immersing myself in text that extols books and their virtues like I do, and for the occasional refresher on book care and tending. This is book is a great general-purpose coffee table book and a MUST for bibliophiles!

Books or looks?.......2007-02-19

This is the same review I posted concerning the paperback edition; in fact I own the hardback, but the books' contents are the same. Only two stars here because the editors did not even bother to make an attractive binding: therefore, the hardback is not a good buy if you insist in having the book.

Having read some of the raving reviews here, and having read the book and possessing a very large library myself, I must say I was somewhat dismayed by the book's contents. The authors seem to try to illustrate many different kinds of libraries, studies and living rooms that function as libraries. This is all right, indeed, this is exactly what I expected. The only trouble is the choice.

Many of the photographed houses seem to have many books but not great book readers. The texts, themselves, give that impression. Also, why were almost only famous people's houses pictured - some of them almost without books at all? The house of a real bookworm is a very different thing from most of the pictured libraries.

If I may put it this way, I would have liked more emphases on books and less on looks. For instance, it is suggested that one might classify books by colour. For anyone that actually uses a library this is almost insulting. Other kind of advice ought to be given: what is the right height of a shelf, what are the more or less standard measures of books, and why this matters (because of space and aesthetic reasons).

Finally, a real book lover cares about bindings, first editions, and typefaces. There is not a single word about the actual "feel" of a book.
Perhaps this is just a very personal opinion. But, having lived with books all my life, I felt this book to be rather superficial. It does not delve into what a book is to its reader or how a book ages, what is different in han-dling incunabula, a Plantin book, a 19th Century small octavo or a modern hardcover or paperback.

I will not say that there were not one or two libraries with which I empathized. I did, in two or perhaps three cases. But the rest seemed about people showing their books off.

For what looks like one's standard coffee-table book, this is so much more. The authors present us with lavish colour photographs and intelligent commentary on a wide selection of private libraries from the homes of book collectors from different walks of life - from the scholar, to the English aristocrat, to the Rock musician. For one who loves books and book collections, it is a treat to be able to step into the homes of serious, passionate book lovers and learn how they live with their books. There are lots of ideas here for arranging one's books and the room(s) in which they are kept; and I felt inspired simply to buy books - often I found myself straining to decipher some of the book titles in the various collections, often tantalizingly just out of focus. The authors help the initiate by providing essays on book care and storage issues, and at the back there is a useful guide (mainly for U.S. and U.K. readers) to booksellers, bookfairs, great libraries, stores that cater for library furniture needs, and so on.
