Great Book.......2007-01-17
This is an awesome book, full of short stories. We are reading it in my en102 class, and I like it a lot. Word to the wise; If you are buying this for a class, check with the teacher on the publication date. I purchased the wrong one because it was $40 cheaper. Same book, but different stories, so be careful.
Impact: fifty short short stories.......2000-09-10
excellent source of education for ESL students, very interesting and easy to read book!
A fabulous collection of short short stories for teachers.......2000-07-26
"Impact" is a book my school has used for nearly a decade as an introduction to the short story, literary issues, and writing projects. An excellent selection of 50 short-short stories, "Impact" follows up each story with a discussion of some appropriate literary term, a selection of questions that are actually worth answering (as a teacher, I know how bad these usually are), and some really innovative writing topics. The stories are all first-rate, from Shirley Jackson's "Charles" to Hemingway's "The Old Man at the Bridge" to Arthur C. Clarke's "Who's There?" Most of the stories also hinge on some ironic twist, allowing that most difficult and valuable of literary concepts to be taught thoroughly. Although a bit pricey for purchase just to read, "Impact" is also an excellent collection for anybody aspiring to write short stories. They simply don't get much better than these!

Great Mystery.......2006-12-11
As I have read the other two books, one and two, of this series, I really enjoyed reading this book as it contained several of the previous characters. I liked Beth better in the other books. She seemed a bit too wimpy in this one. Dawn has the potential to be a very interesting character but needs to grow up some and quit being such a ninny where her supernatural powers are concerned or whatever they are. They aren't threatening to her so why not help people where she can and quit beating up on herself for being related to her father. She obviously knows that she isn't insane. Might be nice to see that Mariah has gotten it together too after losing her husband.
River and Jax were great together and there was lots of mystery, romance and action that made the book very interesting. I really hope that there will be another book in this series containing them in it so that we can see what happens with River's health problems and also what happens to Dawn and Bryan. Would be interesting too to see Jax in action as the new police chief.
Great Read.......2006-11-28
Didn't know it was part of a series, but it didn't really matter. The book was a good page turner and made sense on it's own. All the info needed for the two main characters was there. Dawn's connections did seem to have more to them but it didn't take away from the suspense of the story. It was a great read!
Awesome Paranormal Suspense.......2006-11-01
This was my first Maggie Shane read and my first "Paranormal Romance." I was blown away with the top-notch writing and "page-turner" suspense. Shane's main characters are deftly drawn and VERY REAL. The blossoming love affair between female cop, Jax, and retired NYPD, River, is done with just the right amount of reader "tease," and the ghosts pop-up at all the right intervals. It was a really fun read. I am now totally turned-on to this genre. I will definitely look for more Maggie Shane books!
Would have been great if not for the paranormal aspect.......2006-09-06
When detective Michael "River" Corbett is shot in the head, he is medically retired from the NYPD, and moves back to his small Vermont hometown. But chronic debilitating blackouts plague him. When his pregnant wife is found dead in the home as a fire ravages the structure, firefighters find River lying unconscious with the empty gas can next to him. Confined to an insane asylum for years, River is so heavily medicated that he has no idea what's real and what he's imagining. When he tells best friend and psychiatrist Ethan that he fears someone is trying to kill him, Ethan figures he is delusional and ups his dosage. River decides it's time to stop taking his meds.
When an attempt is made on his life, he manages to stop the culprit, killing him in self defense. River knows the only way to solve Stephanie's murder is to escape and investigate. He arrives at his old home just as a new tenant has moved in. Cassandra "Jax" Jackson has relocated from Syracuse to take over as police chief and to be with her folks who moved after her father's release from prison after killing her sister's alleged rapist/murderer. When Jax discovers River she knows she must turn him in, but also knows that by doing so, may endanger his life. Reluctantly, she tries to help him solve the crime and soon the two are sharing really close and passionate quarters. Someone does not want them to discover what really happened, and all clues lead to Ethan. But has someone set him up to take a fall?
Not realizing this was the third in a series, I was a little lost with the secondary characters like Beth, Josh, and Dawn. Once the story delved into paranormal, my interest waned and did not hold my interest enough for me to want to read the earlier novels.
Oh well!.......2006-06-23
The story was most excellentlyu written [except for some language] Must be the problem of women wanting to be on the par with men and their rotten way of expressing themselves.
Even with out reading the first two books the story held up and explained itself.
"Jax" and River seemed made for each other. He with his memory problems and she with her "sex just for sex" problems. Modern day tramp. The intent was there.
Great mystery - nicely paced - moving plot - great suspence level - just don't care for all the black outs I had to make to adjust for language - couldn't stomach "Jax"'s easy attitude of morality. What a killer.
Read it if you must but be mature - only good for mature readers.

From the supplier: John Berendt's book, 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' has caused controversy with its inaccuracy of the events portrayed in a work Berendt insists is nonfiction. Berendt claims the book is 99% true but concedes he added embellishments to create a folkloric quality. Many critics refuse to accept Berendt's broad definition of nonfiction.

The six works in this volume--"A Lost Lady," "The Professor's House," "Death Comes for the Archbishop," "Shadows on the Rock," "Lucy Gayheart," and "Sapphira and the Slave Girl"--are at once intensely lyrical and highly controlled. Their fascination with the American Southwest, early Canada and Catholicism reflects the older Cather's search for alternatives to the grasping civilization she felt was increasingly replacing the spirit of the early pioneers. validation-form-field.keypoints: The Library of America is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best and most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts. Edward Boyd's agnosticism rested "not ... too much on any positive position ... but rather on a host of negative ones" about Christianity. In an attempt to address these negative issues, his son Greg, a professor of theology, asked his father, a strong-willed, highly intelligent, and stubborn 70-year-old, to enter into a correspondence in which "all of their cards would be laid on the table." Greg would give his father the opportunity to raise all his objections to the veracity of Christianity, and Greg would "answer these objections as well as give positive grounds for holding to the Christian faith."
Three years and more than 30 letters later, Letters from a Skeptic was published and Edward Boyd came to accept Christ. During his journey, he and his son hash through such topics as why the world is so full of suffering; why an all-powerful God needs prayer; how you can believe in someone who rose from the dead; and how another man's death can pardon others. Despite their brutal honesty, both men exhibit respect and love toward one another as they address these volatile subjects. In Edward's second response to Greg, he boldly says, "Well, your distinction between the 'Christian Church' and 'Christians' is interesting and novel, but frankly, I don't buy it." Greg responds, saying, "I've got to admit that you are raising some extremely good points in your letters. You are raising the most difficult questions a theist can face." --Jill Heatherly
Book Description
A son and his skeptical father debate issues such as suffering, Biblical inspiration, and whether or not all non-Christians go to hell. This book will help the reader to wrestle with the rational foundation of his or her own faith.

Wonderful, authentic, insightful father-son conversation.......2007-09-25
All individuals of faith are at times either skeptical or apologetic for their faith beliefs. So, we can identify with both the skeptical father in his forceful, honest questioning and the remarkably insightful son in his clear, loving explanation of Christian faith. My MIT education and my seminary education both prepared me to appreciate the mystery and complexity of finite living in an infinite reality. Surprised at the unexpected depth of thought in this book, I enjoyed it from beginning to end---and purchased 3 copies for my sons! Highly recommended. You might also want to check out Greg Boyd's website and download (free) his fantastic and very timely sermon series The Cross and the Sword!
you may need to re-read this one.......2007-07-27
I really enjoyed this book, mostly as a glimpse into one person's faith journey. I did find some of the apologetics and theology a bit over my head and I would need to re-read this book several times to gather all that Boyd is saying. This would be a great book to use in a discussion forum at church.
The book covers a series of letters written between Boyd the son (who is a pastor at a church) and his father (the skeptic). The letters deal with many of the hard questions that make Christianity unbelievable to some people.
Besides providing arguments for Christianity, this is a story of one man's journey into a life of faith. The tribute at the conclusion was very moving.
I personally found C.S. Lewis Mere Christianity easier to understand, but they are both excellent books.
Great book for mature believer or skeptic.......2007-05-14
This book addresses questions that most people have about God and Christianity. It contains a series of letters written between an unbelieving dad, and his believing son. You find yourself saying about the dad's questions, "I can understand why he asked that". But the responses by the son are quiet effective and thought provoking.
I have given away over 20 copies of this book. It also lends itself to group study. I highly recomment it.
Definitely Worth Reading.......2007-04-11
I read excerpts from this book during our WHY> campaign at church. My pastor had this book and loaned it to me. I was so impressed that I had to not only buy a copy for me, but for a couple of friends who have very skeptical family members. Growing up in a Christian home, there were things I just always believed and never questioned, so it was difficult answering questions from skeptics. Greg Boyd answered his father's heartfelt questions with honest and Biblical answers in a way that was easy to understand. Now I feel more confident to answer those tough questions, too.
A wonderful book.......2007-04-11
This book is a wonderful blessing in my life. It has set turned my world upside down (actually right side up) and provided a spark to my Christian life. I have been so moved by this book that my life has taken on new meaning and direction. God has used this book to change a life forever.

Tells it like it is..........2006-05-19
...or at least like he thinks it is. Harry Rinker doesn't hold punches and looks at the collectibles field without the prerequisite rose-colored glasses. He can be abrasive and hard, but he is often hardest on himself. He could easily be dismissed as a loving curmudgeon, but that would not do his book justice. His suggestions are no nonsense, but right on the mark. He even provides some common sense etiquette for collectors (who us?) While this book may seem perfect for the beginning collector, there are some true gems for those of us who've been around the block. He takes no crap and has no patience and I love his book so much the better for it.
A fun, informative guide.......2005-09-06
Author Harry Rinker has built his reputation as the Collector Inspector who helps collectors learn what is value and what is not: now hi how to think like a collector furthers the education, going beyond the usual price guide to tell amateurs how to learn what WILL become collectible in the future, how to judge an item's value, and how to collect today's bargains with their collectible future potential in mind. Rinker's forty-plus years of collecting and assessing values results in a large knowledge base and a fun take on the hobby of collecting which guides novices through the confusing world of the collector's mind. A fun, informative guide.

Wonderful Scrap Quilts.......2001-11-07
I LOVE this book. The directions are clear, the quilts are all beautifully illustrated and include templates. There are some unusual patterns included as well, like a 1920's teacup quilt. In addition, there are size variations included so that you will know how to take a twin pattern and enlarge it to a king-size etc., The book will also tell the reader IF it is not recommended that a pattern be enlarged. This book is a keeper!
Inspiring, awesome and inventive!.......1999-08-25
What a great use of scraps. I have never owned a better scrap book than this one. I want to make almost every pattern featured! I wonder where I'll find the time!

The dressing on a room's windows can mean the difference between a decorating scheme that doesn't quite work or one that is truly successful. But custom-made window treatments can be terribly expensive, and many do-it-yourselfers are afraid to tackle anything more complicated than a hemmed rectangle of fabric stuck on a pole. As this attractive and thorough guide points out, most curtains start out as exactly that; their uniqueness and appropriateness to a particular setting is a matter of proportion, color, trim, and other detailing. Embodying Sunset's winning how-to series format (see also Simply Slipcovers and Simply Upholstery), the book explains how to choose the right treatment and supplements its extensive step-by-step instructions with good, clear photos and diagrams. In addition to actual construction information for various curtains, valances, swags, and shades, the projects explain planning, measuring, and cutting and include loads of great tips on achieving a professional appearance. Many projects also feature design variations and occasionally "designer details," ideas for finishing touches like tiebacks, rosettes, or sheer mitered hems. Following the 20 projects, the "basics" section explains hardware and mounting considerations, yardage calculations (including photocopy-ready worksheet blanks), installation directions, general construction techniques, and an overview of essential equipment. Even the novice sewer can create dynamic, professional-looking window treatments with the excellent guidance here. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
misleading title: draperies are omitted completely.......2007-02-26
I was interested in having some standard draperies made, and wanted to learn about sizing. I assumed that a book on window treatments would cover draperies. Wrong. Nothing on draperies, not even an index entry. So draperies are not a window treatment? This is especially bad, because there is a section in the beginning where they discuss the pros and cons of different types of window treatments; without an explanation of the pros and cons of draperies, how can you decide that the curtains explained in the book are the right thing for you? Another bad effort from a publishing industry that apparently has fired all the editors.
Not exactly simple.......2006-09-08
I purchased this book because after searching the entire internet, it was the only item that I could find that showed a curtain for an arched window. The book was helpful in making a pattern but was very vague in its instructions. Since I have been sewing for 36 years I was able to overcome that obstacle, but beginning sewers will have difficulty following the instructions. So, if you're an experienced seamstress and want to make a curtain for an arched (or half moon) window, buy this book, if not, think twice.
Good Reference.......2005-05-11
There are a few things I like about this book. The back of the book has a good reference section to teach you about hardware, inside mount, oustide mount, and basically to explain a lot of the techniques it uses throughout the book in the various projects. That is great. I also learned form this book how to make a perfect mitered hem. So professional looking! For that reason alone this book was worth my purchase.
I will say, however, that this book is a bit dated so it may be hard for a beginner to envision their own style with some of the outdated window treatments illustrated. I also think the instructions are difficult to understand. I read many of the projects (especially the one for Roman Shades) and thought, why are they making this so complicated? It's not that hard!! I thought the same thing about Simply Slipcovers. Maybe I like things explained very simply but I do think that some of the projects could really scare off beginners with the complicated wording.
I am happy I bought this book though. It is good for ideas, although I wish it had more of them. I've seen bigger books out there with more window treatments ideas than this one. I kind of wish I had gone with a book that would give me more bang for my buck.
My London Shade turned out lovely!.......2004-03-23
This is one of two curtain making books I own and it is my very favorite. The project I tackled was the "london shade" - mind you, one of my FIRST sewing projects. I had a bit of trouble making the box pleats - but overall, this book guided me to success and I'm looking forward to making another london shade for another room in my house. I've also got plans to try the poufed cloud shade.
I had some difficulty finding the cafe rings used for the backside of the London Shade (the rings that the cord runs through) but was able to order them from Ace Hardware.
There's also a Double Drape tied swag that I'd LOVE to try - but real wary of trying a swag project after one EXTREMELY frustrating experience with swags. That was, of course, before I owned this book - so perhaps it would go more smoothly this time around.
I LOVE this book. I found the directions easy to follow and I LOVED the way it broke down measurements for me for the London shade (Tail, Pleat and Scallop). My shade truly turned out lovely, I made it with a red linen.
I highly recommend this book!
Too confusing.......2002-03-13
I bought this and felt let down. The instuctions are confusing, have too many cross references, and assume a certain amount of skill. This is definitely not what I would call straight forward. I would absolutely not recommend this to a beginner as it can be overwhelming. I ended up not using one bit of information from this book. I also found the ideas to be either too stuffy or relaxed, I couldn't find a middle ground. I found Window Style to be much more informative

How To Do It...Including Pictures!.......2005-09-27
No, you perverts, not that...this book tells you everything you always wanted to know about instructional design. You know, those little picture stories that tell you how to thread a bobbin, put on a life vest, open a can of sardines, or change the battery in your camera.
The book itself is not well put together -- it could have included more information about where the informational comics came from -- but the cartoons are a hoot! Ingenious, some of them, totally incomprehensible some others.
Look at this book - you will learn something, but look at it at the library. Have some fun looking at the directional comics from other countries. Just don't buy it...I don't think it is worth the money.
Insert flap A but don't throw away........2002-08-26
This is not one of those `How to design instructional material for Dummies' books (if it was I certainly wouldn't own a copy) but a beautifully designed and printed book with hundreds of illustrations and diagrams showing how designers have attempted to explain, mostly visually, how we should handle everyday technology. Not only technology but simple stuff too, page eighty-seven shows the instructions, usually printed on tissue paper as I recall, on how to complete one of this little wooden puzzles you can buy in arcade shops, this one is for a camel.
Instructional design is serious stuff, a matter of life and death in some cases. The fold-out on page forty-seven shows forty-one examples of those emergency exit and life jacket cards you find in the seat pocket facing you on a plane. Although they all provide the same information, the type of illustration and layout is different in each example.
Simple instructions can be the hardest to put across, just how do you depict, in a simple visual way, the action of washing out your mouth with a glass of water, page 126 shows how with a profile of a boys head and four arrows describing a circular motion printed on his cheek, his hand holds a tilting glass with the water.
Here is a lovely book for graphic designers to leave on their coffee table.
design ideas.......2000-10-17
a student of industrial design and looking for information on UI and instructions, this book is great in that it shows a variety of examples of instructions that are good/bad. very colorful and interesting pictures, not alot of specific information though; alot of good quotes and perspectives on instruction information.
Best (and Worst) Practices.......2000-08-03
I was looking for theory; so I was initially disappointed, but once I got past that I started enjoying it as a catalogue of both best and worst practices. It's funny. There's a particularly good example of how to use a toilet bib.
Worth a look.......1999-11-30
Don't buy it if you need to know how to do instructional design, instead enjoy the interesting illustrations and examples through the ages. Worthwhile addition to a well-rounded design collection.

excellent biography.......2007-10-15
I've read several books on Howard Hughes, but this one by far is the best.
Richard Hack really looks beneath the surface and into the very soul of Hughes, painting a disturbing yet realistic human portrait of him along the way.
Highly recommended!
Wheeler Dealer.......2007-09-13
What a life Hughes Led! The author did a wonderful job of writng so that I couldn't put the book down. Hughes was the ultimate wheeler dealer. I felt sorry for him as a child with his parnoid mother who raised him to fear all illness. But when he grew up he had no excuse for his behavior in treatment of women. He was fortunate in business, always thinking in larger terms. This book was overall as interesting as Tutankhamun by Hoving; it was as thrilling as riding on a roller coaster driven by Hughes.
Great info.......2007-01-23
This book gives good insite on the life of Howard Hughes. If you are interested in specific information on business or aviation this may not be the book for you. But Howard Hughes was much more than business and aviation. He was a psychoanalyst dream. A very interesting case study in Obsessive Compulsive disorder also another overlooked aspect of his psyche was the relationship he had with women. He would sometimes keep women all over town on payroll to be on call at all times; these women would be on payroll for years sometimes perhaps outliving their best years (hollywood being youth orientated). Women he pursued who never showed interest were seen as conquest. Such as Ava Gardner who by her own definition could never love him because he smelled. However they remained lifelong friends. Yet interestingly when the women he was interested in were married he made it his personal problem to see that they got divorced to the extent of hiring private investigators and such. Howard could have also been considered a voyuer. He would hire investigators for the women he was interested in (some may not have been mutually interested) and spy on them to the point that bugs were planted in their bedrooms. Those who turned him down like Elizabeth Taylor (who was still a teenager were offered money. What is the saddest is his last years. You work your whole life so that you can enjoy your wealth in your golden years but for Howard his golden years consisted of self imposed imprisonment. This was a detriment because the people who were his true friends such as Dietrich (who was loyal and saved him from economic ruin many times)and his aunt Annette (who was there for him in his early years after his parents death)he kept away. So he was neglected at the end. Surrounded by people who never really cared about him just his money.
Boring , full of useless facts.......2006-04-25
This books is just a laundry list of completely useless facts. One gets no personal insight into the individual. Note to self, never buy a biography, always read autobiographies. The difference is amazing. A person writing about their own life is infinitely more useful than an outsider writing about his interpretation of that person's life.

A Real Life Thriller!!!.......1998-01-20
Mr. Maheu shares his amazing life story with the world. He does a wonderful job describing the likes of Howard Hughes and his dark past.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat revealing but disappointing and one-sided........1999-07-18
Robert Maheu gives a one-sided view of his reign under Howard Hughes downplaying his "sins" in my opinion and never really coming to grips with his abuse of power and lack of character. I suspect that what he did reveal is mostly because he was caught with his pants down. Nevertheless, I still found it interesting in helping to piece together the Howard Hughes enigma. I learned much more from reading "Citizen Hughes".

The Reader's Digest Condensed Version Was Better.......2006-01-28
Thrilled by the 5-star Reader's Digest condensed version, I ordered the complete novel thinking that more Richard Hughes could only be better, right?
Wrong.
The condensed version completely eliminated the anticlimactic ending, well described by another reviewer here as "In Hazard peters out like the storm it documents" along with the utterly pointless death of one of the heroes, and it cut out a good deal of a nasty little subplot apparently designed to emphasize the dimwitted anti-Chinese racism of the British crew.
What a disappointment.

In what must be some of the most horrific accounts of strom conditions at sea, In Hazard blasts you in the face with vivid tales of monster waves, blistering winds and the freighter snared in their grasp. As the days of relentless horror pass on board the freighter, the author delves deep into the lives of the men trying to survive the hurricane. Unfortunately, he abandons his gripping description of the storm for a meandering inventory of the survivors' thoughts.
One of the most gripping storms in literature!.......1998-12-06
In Hazard is about the capacity of mankind to cope with overwhelming challenges and believe in its future against dreadful odds. It is a thrilling, sobering, and masterfully written book--but it is worth its price just for the account of the storm, whose winds will never quite die out in the mind of the reader.
a chilling tale of survival in an Atlantic hurricane.......1998-10-07
The SUNDAY TIMES was right: IN HAZARD is a tremendous piece of narrative description. It's one of the finest sea stories ever written--as shocking as THE PERFECT STORM, and even better written.
The weather was building, but the captain felt almost no concern at all. His freighter was no ordinary ship, and the hurricane season was past. Surely, he was facing no more than a fall gale in tropical waters.
What he was actually facing was one of the most powerful ocean storms ever recorded. By Wednesday, the ship was experiencing a full hurricane. On Thursday, the barometer would fall to 26.99 mb and the winds would be blowing 200 knots. That's when the horror began. During the ensuing days, the wind and the sea were about to perform feats no living sailor had ever seen before. Read this book!
A good sea story........1997-05-01
This is a "cracking good" sea story about a ship caught up in a hurricane and unable to escape. These people are having a bad time! The writing transcends the subject matter. Read it if you can find it
