Took this book with me on a cruise and couldn't put it down. Wouk's writing so fabulous I am now reading all of his book, some a second time.

He is a masterful writer and creates characters that come alive and stay with you.Inside, Outside: A Novel

Fascinating, funny, romantic, wise... This is a stunning exploration of the American Jewish experience - the heartfelt tale of every immigrant torn between the culture of his forefathers and the glorious temptations of a new land's dream. - A grand piece of storytelling-Boston Globe. Rich and compelling-The New York Times. Laugh until your side aches...Wipe away a tear...-Pittsburgh Press

"Inside, Outside" comes as close to being an outright autobiography as Wouk is likely to write."

"Wouk demonstrates his ability to write with compassion about people both literary and historical, real and imaginary."

Wouk's 1985 saga is a social comedy of Jewish-American life reaching from New York to Jerusalem and spanning much of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Wouk is superb.......2001-01-25

There's no such thing as a bad book by Herman Wouk, and the breadth of his writing is almost as vast as the depth. To think that one man wrote MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR, THE CAINE MUTINY, THIS IS MY GOD, THE WINDS OF WAR, WAR & REMEMBRANCE, DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL plus a half dozen others simply boggles the imagination.

Along with DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL, Wouk's funniest book, INSIDE, OUTSIDE is an easier read than most of the other topics he has tackled. Set in a recent decade, the title refers to the fact that in Jewish families, some people use one name at home, their Hebrew, "inside" name and the Anglicized version of that same name out in the big world. Along with the name chosen go two different and distinctive aspects of their personalities.

It seemed clear on reading INSIDE, OUTSIDE that the hero's sister, Lee, is the all-grown up version of Marjorie Morningstar. This is not Herman Wouk's most important book, far from it, but it is one of his easiest works to read. The story he has told, as always, is an interesting one. There is no such thing as a bad book when Mr. Wouk is the author.

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.......1999-06-18

Though this is the story of a Jewish boy growing up in New York, it felt to me that Wouk had met my soul one day and probed it of its deepest thoughts. No book I have ever read has spoken this directly to me. The theme of alienation is one that anyone, anywhere, Jew or Gentile, male or female can identify with.

It also helps that this is one of the funnier books I have read in a long time. It is a true gem.

Kat doesn't want any trouble . . . but the body count's rising faster than the Mississippi

No one in Twin Oaks knows about the risky deal Kaitlin Wells cut with the Feds for her release. But everyone remembers her scandalous arrest for stealing money from the Mercury Bank. Now, three years later, Kat has come home to catch the real thieves and prove her innocence. Trouble is, some powerful folks don't want her digging up the past . . . or getting friendly with new sheriff Justin Radner. But some laws can't be ignored -- like white-hot attraction. And soon determined Kat and her handsome, daring lawman are risking love and life to expose the lies that will bring down a murderer . . . before the killer strikes again.

There were a few things in this book that really bugged me. Some of the details seemed lame and fake. I guessed the mysterious bad guy by the second chapter, but the writer gives you more than enough of those. There were other details in the book that were very interesting and informative. I've never considered vomit to the face as a self-defense move. The poisons and conspiracies were awesome. Oh, and anyone kidnapped in the trunk of a car should try to kick out the lights.

4 out of 5 stars Heroine rises above a horrible family.......2006-07-13

Kat Wells has spent over three years in prison for a crime she didn't commit. The Feds offer her the opportunity to get out of prison early under the guise of a furlough to help them catch the real culprits behind the bank robbery, and she jumps at the chance to clear her name. Her mother and sister, who deserted her at the first sign of trouble just want her gone so that sister Tori can marry the wealthy judge's son.

Justin Radner has just returned to become Sheriff of Twin Oaks after leaving the New Orleans police force. He is not a welcome addition by some of the town higher ups including a local judge with political aspirations and the father of his teen lover who holds him responsible for her suicide. His first stop is to make sure that new parolee Kat does not become a repeat offender. He soon realizes when he catches her beating the crud out of a town bully cum rapist that she can take care of herself.

Kat excels in her new position working on the local newspaper with editor David taking her under his wing. After obtaining background information on a puzzling homicide, the two work with Justin to investigate the murder and soon, it appears that there is a lot more going on than the bank robbery including drugs, money laundering, and murder. As they are thrown together, there is an undeniable attraction between Kat and Justin, but at the first sign of adversity, he wrestles with his doubts and realizes he's falling in love with her.

Sawyer's latest is a tense and emotional drama featuring a charismatic couple's search for the truth and in Kat's dealings with her less than worthy family.

2 out of 5 stars Too many issues to be good.......2006-07-08

Half Past Dead was an interesting story, that had - in my opinion - writerly issues in flow, development and what not. It's not a bad story, but there were a few things that just bugged me about.

The story is about Kat Wells, a woman who lived in a small town and was always a bit of a misfit - overweight and plain to her sisters thin prettiness, and unloved by her mother. All that changed when she was accused of stealing money from the bank she worked in and sent to prison and is completely abandoned by her family. Three years later, she is told by the Feds that they know she is innocent, but in order to be set completely free she has to work with them on their long-standing investigation into activities in her home town. She returns home under the guise of a work release, but in reality is undercover. No longer overweight and now considered pretty, she attracts the attention of the new sheriff, Justin - who she had crush on as a teenager- and also the confidence of her work release boss at the newspaper. Together they try to figure out answers to the mysteries in her home town, and Kat and Justin fight a heavy attraction.

It's definitely an interesting story with lots of twists and turns, but that is a bit of the problem. There are just way too many pieces. There's just so much going on that it's a bit much. There's murders, poisonings, money laundering, drugs, people being framed, vendetta's, assaults, etc. And the author doesn't do quite a good enough job tying everything together at the end. She doesn't give a clear enough picture as to what exactly was going on. You still understand it, but clearer lines connecting all the dots would have helped the story.

One of the things that really pushed the story into the "too much" range was that there were 4 people trying to kill Kat, all for different reasons. I mean, come on. One or two people out for her is fine, but four? That's just way, way too much and pushes the story into unbelievable range. Just kinda makes you shake your head and think "yeah, sure, whatever". I also had a problem with Kat not quite standing up for herself to her family. They were horrible to her. And though she didn't welcome them with open arms, she was unreasonably accepting of them. True, family is family, but there comes a point where lines are crossed and they did. As for Kat and Justin's romance, it was nice, but underdeveloped. The author didn't give it the attention it needed and didn't build the emotional ties enough so that when they say "I Love You" at then end, it worked.

So in the end, it was an okay book. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it.

5 out of 5 stars HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-13

Kaitlin Wells is in prison for a crime she did not committ. She has been cut off by family and friends, so for the last 3 years she has had to learn to be self sufficient. Never again will she be so trusting. Suddenly the FBI offer her a deal, they know she is innocent, but will not let the truth out because they are on the trail of bigger prey. She can be furloughed if she will go back to Twin Oaks and be undercover for them. IN this Catch-22 she has no choice, she has to accept the deal and hope she can prove her innocence.

Justin Radner has just moved back to Twin Oaks, he has been appointed Sheriff. He is notified of her return but not told anything about her undercover work. When he meets her he is surprised by her attitude, she doesn't act like a guilty criminal, but he knows not to go by looks. Anyway he has a murder to investigate. The first in 11 yrs.

As the investigation moves forward, Kat seems to be somehow involved. The mystery of this woman is keeping him up at night. Kat finds many changes in her town, but the people are just as down and dirty as she remembers. Kat and Justin are brought togather by circumstances and attraction and after a couple of attempts on Kat's life, both are convinced she has the answer, if she can only find it.

This is a great read, I read it in one sitting. Totally riviting.

5 out of 5 stars exciting police procedural-amateur sleuth romantic suspense .......2006-01-03

Three years ago Kaitlin Wells was convicted of robbing the Mercury National Bank. She went to Danville Correctional Facility. Now the prosecutor in her case Harlan Westcott informs her he knows she is innocent as new evidence from another investigation surfaced. He offers her a deal that will free her immediately on a work release program or she can linger for a year of two in prison until the undercover operation is completed. She agrees to help him catch the criminal once she learns her mother is dying from ovarian cancer though she knows her mother and sister deserted her.

Over the objection of the affluent, Ole Mississippi football fanatics, and those who blame him for the suicide of his high school girlfriend Verity, former big city cop Justin Radner is appointed temporary sheriff of Twin Oaks. Even before he starts he has a homicide to deal with but also looks into the bank robbery in which Kat went to prison; likewise she does too. As they compare notes, they plan to prove she is innocent while they fall in love with one another.

HALF PAST DEAD is an exciting police procedural-amateur sleuth romantic suspense with a heroine who wants desperately to prove she is innocent before her mom dies. The story line is action-packed, but also provides a cautionary tale that justice is not blind or equal as the prosecution could afford to go all out against Kat while she depended on brainless public defender way out of his league. Readers will appreciate this fine thriller that never slows down once the culprit knows the cop and the convict are searching to uncover him or her.

4 out of 5 stars Following the trails of Aleytys'.......2000-05-23

Having a heroine with extraordinary powers brings this story in line with Jo Claytons previous books on the adventures of Aleytys. Sold into slavery to insectoid owners, Aleytys discovers she is to serve as proxy-mother to the old Queens successor. In short being both the bearer and food source for the embryo she carried.

With her own enhanced abilities, and the added mystical strength of the diadem, the story of Aleytys' gives us a rousing adventure with unusual twists and turns. A tough, believable, swords and sorcery story to engage the imagination and satisfy the most ardent reader searching for fantasy and satisfaction.

Separating truth from myth can be hard when it comes to skin problems. Apart from medical advice, there seems to be a puzzling array of creams and potions, herbal remedies and alternative treatments. Understanding Skin Problems helps sufferers maximise the benefits of advice, from whatever source, so that they can learn to live with their condition more easily. Written from a psychological perspective, Linda Papadopoulos and Carl Walker show that, although seldom life-threatening, skin diseases can be very distressing for both sufferers and their families. As a source of information or just as general interest, this handy guide will help you to understand the importance of the mind-body connection, and how it can help in dermatology.

A stunning text that delivers the scientific insight expected from a Dr Walker publication. The revelation here though, and in essence what separates this book from others, is the development of the scientist (and one time 'enfant terrible' of Psychology!) as a story teller. One hesitates to use the word genius - a term all too frequently applied in these celebrity obsessed times - but history will certainly look upon this title very favourably.

If you only read one dermatology self help book this year, then make sure that it's this one!

You will not be able to think about anything else until you have finished it, and even then thoughts will keep popping into your head.

About the best book Dr Walker has ever written. This will always be his classic masterpiece, his epitaph even.

Every year, New York magazine publishes two definitive guides to entertaining-one for summer, one for the holidays. New York Cooks collects the best recipes from these issues, showcasing the creations of the city's greatest chefs. Their mouth-watering dishes can be easily made at home-they've all been tested-without spending the whole day in the kitchen.

The recipes in this stylishly designed collection include modern classics and fresh takes on standards, from Goat Cheese and Beet Terrine from David Bouley of Bouley, to Sweet Corn and Lobster Chowder from Aquagrill's Jeremy Marshall, to Chocolate Brownies from the Gramercy Tavern's Claudia Fleming. Among the book's other recipes are dishes by Thomas Keller, Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and other prominent New York and former New York chefs.

New York readers have long clamored for the magazine's favorite recipes for entertaining. Now, for the first time, the best of the magazine's fresh, modern dishes-for everyday cooking and for fine dinner parties-are available in one book.

This is a great book, I have made several recipes, and they were perfect! But I just tried the peanut brittle recipe, and it was terrible!!! It was so salty. I thought the amount of salt seemed like a lot (1 1/2 tablespoons) but the recipe says the salt is the key ingredient, so I forged ahead. Yup, I was right, it was way too salty. I thought I had seen a recipe similar to this one in one of McCullough's Best of the Year series, so I went searching, and found the exact same recipe, from the same restaurant. And the amount of salt was 1 1/2 TEASPOONS!! So I made it again, with the correct amount, and it is fabulous!

So just make sure you correct this if you own the book. Don't let this deter you from getting the book, I just pointed this out to save others from throwing away a lot of ingredients.

You can recreate your favorite restaurant dishes, yet receipes are not that complicated. Began reading the book with a pad of post-its by my side, by the time I was half-way through, every page was bookmarked! The meat loaf is superb and the roasted chicken to die for!

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition to Sixgun Literature........1999-12-02

Taffin is recognized as the foremost student of the big bore revolver at the end of the 20th Century.

Big Bore Sixguns is a worthy successor to the works of Keith and others and will stand alongside the seminal Sixguns as an important reference. While Taffin is well grounded in the technical and historical facets of revolver delopment, his emphasis on practical application sets this work apart from the coffee-table tomes dedicated to the collector and historian.

The photography is of the f/44 tradition, emphasizing detail and real-world perspective. His use of deep field self portraiture has become something of a personal trademark. One suspects that the arthor adopted this technique to maximize depth of focus for un-manned timer shots from the tripod but the striking result is a sharply focused image of the revolver in somewhat startling close proximity to the camera.

Trust Taffin on the fine details as well as the big picture. He is one of a small handful of specialty journalists who concentrate on these large hunting and utility revolvers and are in constant contact with the key players in this realm of the sixgun culture.

4 out of 5 stars Good but flawed........1999-09-28

Every twenty years or so, a book turns up that captures the shooter's art at a critical point in its evolution and becomes a definitive text. Sixguns by Keith by Elmer Keith and John Taylor's African Rifles and Cartridges are books like that, and remain influential nearly fifty years after they were written. In Big Bore Sixguns, John Taffin tries for the same goal, and almost makes it.

Big Bore Sixguns is an entertaining review of the dozen or so handgun cartridges considered "big bores," and includes Taffin's observations on them. It starts with a history of the revolver and ends with a review of using them in the 1990's, and Taffin more than covers the waterfront. The problem is that he has the irritating habit of casting himself as a peer of pioneers like Keith and Taylor. He never tells us why we should agree, except to say that he has load data he won't publish, or is good buddies with X, who gave him the first of this model or Y who loaned him the last of that one. That's fine in magazines, since gunwriters have to keep score, but if it is going to be in a book, it should be more subtle.

He also has the annoying habit of having himself photographed with a large, loaded and cocked revolver pointed almost directly into the camera, which gives the appearance of something extremely dangerous.

The other photography in the book is good, and there are more than enough pictures of odd, rare and interesting revolvers, cartridges and impedimentia to hold nearly any shooter's interest. Of particular interest are the photographs of the working revolvers of the 19th century, which give an excellent idea of how they compare to modern firearms. (Most gun books show engraved and cased versions of these older guns, and it's usually hard to tell what they really looked like.)

Ultimately, I think Big Bore Sixguns will stand as a solid if somewhat flawed recap of where revolver shooting stood at the close of the twentieth century. Taffin's writing is informative and entertaining, but I got the feeling there was a lot more he could have told us if he had chosen to do so. Maybe we'll get that in the sequel.

For all of my carping, you should still cough up the money for this book. It's worth it.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Handgun classic!.......1998-10-02

If you liked Sixguns by Keith you'll also like Big Bore Sixguns! This is a well researched and written book about revolvers, primarily single action revolvers. John Taffin shares his unabashed love for fine revolvers and imparts a wealth of knowledge about the guns, cartridges, history and reloads.

This is one of the few books that I use on a regular basis in my ceramics class.

Takes a lot of the guess work out of painting ceramics!

If it were an option I might have given four and a half stars instead of five, but this is still a "how-to" book that you can really use.

5 out of 5 stars I'm better at painting ceramic bisque than I thought I was........1998-11-25

I decided to buy this book a few months ago at a ceramics show because I was not satisfied with the quality of my ceramic painting skills.

I don't really consider myself to be the "artistic" type, but I have to say that I have been painting some great looking pieces lately. In my ceramics class I finally feel like I know what I'm talking about.

I've never taken the time to review a book before, but I feel that this book deserves to be recommended since it was *actually* helpful to me, and I was not even aware of some of the techniques described in the book before I picked it up.

                                            Book Description

With a verisimilitude Hieronymus Bosch would have admired, Wayne Barlowe renders his latest visual nightmare in a startling yet classic style. Fifteen new paintings, along with numerous drawings, portray a world of warriors, hellish beasts, and infernal landscapes. With its heavy stock, embossed cover, and button-tie closure, this book resembles an authentic portfolio.

5 out of 5 stars Barlowe's Sketches of the Infernal.......2007-06-18

Artist Wayne Barlowe is simply brilliant. With this book and its predecessor, INFERNO, Barlowe gives illustration to that most dreaded place still to linger in the minds and consciences of many a man and woman: Hell.

Barlowe's literally tortured landscape is one of the few truly original and imaginative renderings of the Demonic realm that I've seen or read in quite a while.

Barlowe's Inferno with its demonic overlords, ruling from citadels built with the crushed souls of condemned humanity over a dimension of pain and humiliation is repugnant yet fascinating.

                                            3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed.......2007-01-19

But please do not let the title heading fool you. Of course Mr. Barlowe's work is brilliantly creepy (in this respect). In fact, with this book, there are more creatures in addition to his previous Inferno book which gives his hellish world more life but my disappointment lies with the fact that it is very short in comparison to his former work.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Brushfire.......2005-07-20

Beautiful, Interesting and Haunting. Really makes you think about the bad side of judeo christian beleifs.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting.......2003-01-29

First off, Barlowe is an amazingly talented artist, and anything he does is worth owning.
Second, this book is an excellent continuation of "Inferno". If you do not own "Inferno", this can be read alone. However, the two are part of the same vision of Hell.
Third, while this book has slightly less content than "Inferno", it's still excellent. The artwork is inspired and haunting. The demons have an organic feel that makes them look real. They also have the remnants of their angelic heritage. Whereas "Inferno" is Barlowe's travels through Hell, focusing on people, places, and "beings", this book focuses on beings in the hierarchy of Hell, from officers to demons to fallen souls.

5 out of 5 stars In Regards to Brushfire...........2002-06-29

As my first thought, the point of view of Brushfire was much different from that of Inferno. This time it is written as if Barlowe were actually in Hell while painting his various subjects. Although this can be interesting, the perspective sometimes leaves out alot of information about the demons major and minor, focusing more on what he was thinking and what was happening around him at the time he was painting.
Brushfire mananages to have very visually rewarding illustrations. Pictures of "posing subjects" tend to be more photographic, while pictures outdoors are usually more like the ones from Inferno. However, I feel it could have incorporated more of the titanic scale so ubiquitous in Inferno. This effect gives Barlowe's Hell a very supernatural feel, one that separates his vision from that of other's.
As a humorous ending note, there is a little "insider joke" in the book. One of the pictures is of Morphaiis, a demon that Barlowe befriends on his visit to Hell. What makes it funny is that the painting is of James Cowan, Barlowe's friend and book publisher (who just happens to work for Morpheus International.

Hailed for his vivid depictions of life in hell's inferno, Wayne Barlowe fills his paintings with sprawling landscapes and bizarre inhabitants. More than just a collection of eye-popping paintings, Barlowe's work comprises a visionary world, complete with commentary and a foundation in the myths and beliefs of multiple cultures. Limited to just 150 copies individually signed and numbered by the artist himself, Barlowe's Inferno collects these amazing depictions of hell inside of a splendid cloth slipcase and includes a signed print, suitable for framing.

When I saw this book and seen the reviews, I figured that it was just going to be "cool". Then when I finally got this in the mail I was completely overwhelmed by the imaginative visions that Barlowe puts into each of the paintings. Each picture is filled with detail and rich color. The captions get really in depth with what the picture stands for and which Demon is shown and when you think about it, it can be fairly creepy if this is what Hell was really like. Barlowe talks about making his way into the lowest reaches of Hell and bringing back the images to share with the world. The artwork in this book will completely blow you away.

This collection is basically Barlowe's visual interpretation of Dante's Inferno from The Divine Comedy. Each painting has a page of description pointing out the purpose and reason for every detail in the image. From a tortorous picture of Lillith, to the haunting painting of a minor demon riding on the backs of several tortoured souls held together with muck, they are each fascinating to examine. Like Dali and other fantastical artists, one can look at these paintings and see something new every time. The color work is fantastic, and in some paintings actually appears to be digital photography until one looks closer. A ver well-thought-out project, it is pleasing to see another side of Barlowe's intelligent work.

4 out of 5 stars A very strange and hellish book........2004-03-12

The book was not as good as I thought it was going to be. When I read certain passages of it at the bookstore I thought it was going to be a fictional narrative of a doomed person's experience in Hell. Instead it was more of an artists explanation about his paintings. The book still drew me in and made me think and feel about what Hell might be like. For this reason, the books ability to make me seriously think about Hell in a literal sense, I will give it four stars.

Wayne Barlowe has long been one of my favorite artists, up there with Bekinski and Giger. He has a real talent for pulling the viewer into his world, so that we can almost smell the sulfur. This and its companion piece Brushfire are my (current) favorite art volumes, as I seem to be in a very hellish phase right now. But even when I'm not feeling hellish, I'm in awe of Mr. Barlowe's talent. I love the texture of the worlds and characters, the deep, roaring, ash-filled atmosphere of the environs of hell he portrays. I am always inspired by his work.

                                            5 out of 5 stars The best!!.......2002-03-29

Normally I am reserved in my reviews but this one stands out as an entity that deserves high praise. I had been researching visions of Hell for some years when this book came out. It was an exquisite find as the author's vision was finely detailed and provided a wealth of information. His Hell is different yet similar to Dore's vision which appealed to me. It is as if he took Dore's vision and placed his own ideas and concepts on top of Gustave's.

This is highly recommended. The pictures are stunning and the text adds some nice thought as well. One reviewer wrote that he thought the souls looked to much like statuary and while I do agree with that criticism it is a minor quibble and is not always the case.

WALTER TETLEY (1915-1975) was the quintessential kid voice of radio. His distinguished voice career began in the early 1930s and lasted until radio's final years in the 1950s. He was also a very private person who never gave interviews, instead choosing to immerse himself in charity and voice work throughout most of his life.

For the FIRST time in print—finally a complete biography on one of radio's most beloved character actors. Including many RARE PHOTOS and THOUSANDS OF CREDITS, most of which have never been seen or discussed in any article or book. That is because this biography has been written with the aid of Walter's personal scrapbooks!

From The Great Gildersleeve to Rocky and Bullwinkle's Peabody and Sherman—and beyond.
