Having penned Election, a great novel of high-school manners, Tom Perrotta gives us Joe College, a great novel about college mores. In 1982, one Yale junior struggles with George Eliot, dorm blanket bingo, dining-hall dish-line duty, a massive crush on a girl in love with his favorite prof, daily cards and calls from a girl back home in New Jersey, and a lush profusion of authentically individual yet instantly recognizable undergrad eccentrics. After an evening of ritualistic bong hits, kimchee feasting, and sympathetic discussion of Leon Czolgosz, the anarchist who shot President McKinley, Danny thinks of his parents: "Was this what they scrimped and sacrificed for all those years? So their son could spend his Tuesday nights drinking beer, smoking dope, eating weird food, and learning to see the assassin's side of the story?"
Yup, that's the way it was, and Perrotta's immense strength is to give moment-by-moment immediacy to his hero's tortuous internal monologue. Instead of dumping his Jersey girl, Danny figures, "if I avoided her long enough, she'd get tired of waiting and supply my half of the conversation on her own, thereby sparing me the unpleasantness of having to be the bad guy." Yet he is also capable of heroism, as when he impulsively defies no-neck Mafiosi who menace his dad's "Roach Coach" lunch truck, which Danny drives to blue-collar work sites during school breaks. What gives the story structure is the collision in our hero's soul between his former life and the world of towers, moats, and upward mobility. He can't quite identify with his hometown reverence for Bruce Springsteen, but it rubs him wrong to see Springsteen LPs played "for the enjoyment of people who were going to end up being the bosses of the people the Boss was singing about. Nobody in Entryway C was born to run."
Election may have a better plot, but Joe College scoots along like a waterskeeter on a marvelous stream of consciousness. Tom Perrotta was born to write. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
For many college students, spring break means fun and sun in Florida. For Danny, a Yale junior, it means two weeks behind the wheel of the Roach Coach, his father's lunch truck, which plies the parking lots of office parks in central New Jersey. But Danny can use the time behind the coffee urn to try and make sense of a love life that's gotten a little complicated. There's loyal and patient hometown honey Cindy and her recently dropped bombshell to contend with. And there's also lissome Polly back in New Haven-with her shifting moods, perfect thrift store dresses, and inconvenient liaison with a dashing professor. If girl problems aren't enough, there's the constant menace of the Lunch Monsters, a group of thungs who think Danny has planted the Roach Coach in their territory.Joe College is Tom Perrotta's warmest and funniest fiction yet, a comic journey into the dark side of love, higher education, and food service.

Stunning!.......2007-04-13
I've become a huge Tom Perrotta fan and have read everything he's written. Joe College is my favorite of the lot. Perrotta can be funny and touching at the same time, which is no mean feat. Characters are exceedingly well drawn and the dialogue sparkles. By the first ten pages of the book, you don't even care about the plot -- you just want to know these great characters better. Highly recommend!!
Joe Average.......2007-02-08
"Joe College" is a typically humorous coming-of-age tale, the twist (or, rather, hook) being that the main character, Princeton undergrad Danny, has to spend his spring break driving Dad's lunch wagon in working-class Jersey. The basic themes inherent in this coming-of-age story have been done time and time again, and the characters (to give you an idea of what I mean, Amazon calls some of them "instantly recognizable undergrad eccentrics") are no different. Imagine the secondary characters in Dead Poet's Society/School Ties/Scent of a Woman together in one story, and conspicuously littered with pieces of 80's pop culture.
That being said, Perrotta's numerous witticisms and sharp observations make the book an interesting light read. His prose is easy and fluid, his style personal and funny. The frequent dialogue is skillfully and naturally written. Overall, "Joe College" is a youthful summer romp masquerading as an emotional think-piece, and it would have made a better movie. Perrotta's stories make good movies (good within their own contexts) and it'd be nice to see him do more writing for screen.
If you like this style of novel and story, then perhaps read "Mall" by Eric Bogosian or other books by that author. Bogosian is different in approach and style, but reads just as fast and explores similar contemporary, everyday characters in everyday themes, however darker ones. I'd say that Bogosian's writing along similar lines is far more emotionally impacting and generally more interesting in structure and style than Perrotta, who tries to achieve the same effect but comes off a little too sweet.
Funny, Engaging Coming-of-Age Tale.......2006-07-18
Tom Perrotta is a gifted writer. "Joe College" is a pretty good book that centers on a working class youth from New Jersey who attends Yale.
The book focuses primarily on the class struggle of the protagonist Danny, who doesn't quite fit in with the trust fund kids of Yale or his ambitionless, working class friends from his hometown. The book does a good job of highlighting college life from Spring Break to work study jobs to dangling multiple romantic interests at one time. Perrotta's greatest gift is that he can insert a minor character, a line or dialogue, or an image that will remind you of what it was like growing up.
The book has a few flaws--for instance, the Danny character doesn't overcome his obstacles, instead, they solve themselves leaving him off the hook. Also, while it is easy to identify with Danny, he does have a few traits that make him somewhat unlikeable. This may also leave you thinking at the end of the story, "what was the point?"
However, it is still a very good book. Looking at Perrotta's other works, "Bad Haircut" is still his best book. "Election," which isn't as good as the Alexander Payne movie, is funny, structurally brilliant, and a quick read at around 200 pages. "Little Children" is decent but not as good as critics have said. "The Wishbones" is entertaining, but it is, by far, the weakest of his books.
Another winner from Perrotta.......2005-11-17
Fans of Perotta won't be disappointed with this novel. Perotta knows his material well (like our main character Danny, Perotta went to Yale, and I suspect he's probably from New Jersey, too), and he creates vivid characters that become a part of the reader's life. Danny is a privileged college student on one hand, but he works his dad's lunch truck and earns his keep in the college cafeteria, too. Readers are in for a glimpse at both ends of the class spectrum as Danny tries to balance his school and his economic background. The plot has been summarized well in other reviews, so there's no need for me to go into it, but suffice it to say that anyone who enjoys good literature will become involved with the characters in this book.
Anyone who enjoyed this book will like Perrotta's other works. The Wishbones is most like this novel, but Little Children is my personal favorite (it deals with people about ten years older than those in Joe College and The Wishbones).
Ok.......2005-10-15
Not much plot but excellent depth of character and emotional intensity. Tom understands who people are and how they interact. I recommend it.

Grabbed me and pulled me in.......2007-05-29
Terrific novel. Such a genuine, non-judgemental look at extra-relational relations (a euphemism if there ever was one), and so skillful at portraying how society deals with pedophilia. I was also impressed that a man caught the classic "Queen Bee-ness" of Mary Ann's character, and how her sidekicks were so driven by fear of her disapproval. I sympathized will all the characters, even the slimeballs. I sensed that the author didn't quite catch the "dialect" of three-year-old speech. Something to work on for his next great novel!
A novel for grown-ups.......2007-05-28
This is a wise and humane novel and one of the very few American novels to deal with marital and extramarital sex with honesty and understanding. Both the plotting and the characterization are exceptional and I hope this book finds a much wider audience.
Let's just look at this as a novel, not a movie.......2007-04-21
I haven't seen the movie and don't know if I intend to. I just wanted a great book, and this was definitely a perfect choice! It's the kind of story that pulls you in immediately, and you can't put down, even though it's really time to go to bed!
There is suspense, electricity, and a twist. It should go on your list if you ever wonder about having a lover. Or want to read about someone who took the plunge.
Decent people beware........2007-03-29
Little Children was my favorite movie of 2006, and also my sister's favorite. So someone gave my sister a copy of the book it was based on. After she finished it, she gave it to me. It is a lot like the movie, only longer, since it doesn't have a two hour time limit. There are many extra scenes here that didn't make it into the movie. Much more background into the characters' past. One main difference between the book and the movie is that the actors in the movie don't match the descriptions of the characters in the book (not that they have to). The main difference plotwise is that the character of Ronnie meets a different fate in the book and the movie. Anyway, this is a great book which I enjoyed very much.

Loved it, a definate keeper!!! If you like this author, I'd also recommend Kresley Cole as well.
Honor's Splendour.......2007-07-02
I bought this book thinking it was going to be a very good book. I love romance novels and this is actually the first book I read from Garwood. This book was not as good as I had thought it'd be. Sort of disappointed. I couldn't wait to finish it because I find it alittle boring. I did love the fact that he secretly vowed that she belongs to him all because she has shown him kindness by warming his feet unpredictably. The romance between them was sweet over all, but the ending of the plot could've been written better.
Love at first sight.......2007-06-22
This was the first book I've ever read by Julie Garwood, and I couldn't put it down. The characters were funny and charming. I've read this book so many times now that I pretty much have it memorized. (AND STILL LOVE IT!) Now if I see one of her books I just have to pick it up and see what its about!
In Honor's Splendour Madelyne is a very sweet and inncoent lady who has had a rough background. Bent on revenge Baron Duncan kidnaps her to puish her brother for the rape of his sister. "A sister for a sister". However, Duncan turns into her protector more than her captor. Madelyne charms the whole Wexton family and makes them come together even stronger. A new love grows between Duncan and Madelyn, but is threatend when Madelyen is dragged to court and threatened by her brother again. Definently a story to fall in love with.
*sigh* Never again........2007-06-11
This is the second, and last, book I'll ever read by Julie Garwood. I gave her a second chance because we all know that even the best author can turn out a crappy book (see The Reluctant Suitor by Kathleen Woodiwiss). I just do not like the way that Julie Garwood writes a conversation. It seems to me that she is one of those authors that sacrifice quality for quantity. Her books are completely forgettable.
Just Great!.......2007-06-07
I've read MANY of Julie Garwood's novels because I'm such a big fan. This book has got to be my favorite of all the books out there. This is one of those novels where there is a strong-willed heroine who is fighting to change a stubborn and insensitive man. What made me laugh was that even though Madeline was so stubborn, she kept calling herself a "Sweet tempered lady". The way that Duncan realized that he loved and cherished Madeline was really sweet. The only thing I didn't like about the novel was the ending. I think Garwood could have done a better ending.

Prescription Drugs for Half Price or Less
ASIN: 1578261929
Release Date: 2005-04-19 |
Book Description
The first easy-to-use reference guide to saving 50% or more on the 250 most commonly prescribed medications in the United States.
Over 40 million Americans lack health insurance. Another 40 million Americans are insured by Medicare and do not have prescription medications as a covered benefit. The 50 million covered by Medicaid are threatened by reduced benefits and limited formulary coverage. Even the 74 million Baby Boomers with health insurance are impacted, as pharmaceutical companies pass their costs on in the form of higher co-pays and insurance premiums. We all are affected by the problem of rising prescription drug costs.
Drugs for Less is the answer to the problem. Empowering consumers with needed information, the book outlines seven simple strategies to reduce rising pharmaceutical prices. Here, for example, are tips on how to ensure that drugs you buy online are safe, guidelines on how to slice medications, and information on which generic drugs are more effective than the expensive brand-name versions. Most importantly, the book includes an extensive directory of the 250 most commonly prescribed medications with specific information on how to save money on that drug.
Making sense of the convoluted system of pricing drugs and showing you how to beat it, Drugs for Less is the best investment you can make in your health.

Get the best deal.......2007-01-10
Drugs for Less should be on anyone's book shelf who is a user of prescription drugs. Michael Cecil, M.D., first of all explains drug pricing for name brand and generic drugs. He then offers seven strategies for lowering your drug costs.
* Learn prices
* Comparison shop
* Buy generic medications
* Slice medications
* Consider other medications in the same class
* Put your government to work for you
* Use pharmaceutical assistance programs
All are helpful and could immediately lower your prescription drugs bills, but two that you may be under-utilizing are the last two. Some states have pharmaceutical assistance programs with income limits much higher than poverty level and most drug companies have assistance programs. It's worth seeing if you qualify.
More than 600 of the most commonly prescribed medications are included. Part II, the Drugs for Less Listing, has nearly 100 medications with their alternatives and the manufacturer's contact number for their assistance program. A number of comparison charts on costs for other medications are also included. The books is loaded with resources; Dr. Cecil provides numerous Web sites and contact information throughout the book.
This is one resource you do not want to be without.
Great Resource.......2006-03-05
This is a one of a kind book. In today's health mire this gives concrete ways to assist family members and friends who struggle with affordable prescriptions. Every doctor, nurse, healthcare facility, social worker, and individual who needs a prescription should have a copy. I am buying several and giving as gifts. Thank you Dr. Cecil for this invaluable resource.
An empowering book for patients.......2005-06-27
As a hospitalist, It's frustrating to see patients return to the hospital because they could not afford their medications. This book attacks that problem in a new and exciting way, by empowering patients. It educates and then provides numerous tools for getting affordable medications, like using generics, pill splitting, enrolling in assistance programs, just to name a few. Physicians also should read this book. The easy to read tables make it simple to compare medications within a class and prescribe the least expensive. I'm recommending this to all my patients and colleagues.
THIS BOOK IS A MUST BUY! For everyone who wants to live healthy and save money.......2005-06-24
This book is AMAZING!!! I had no idea there are such different prices for the SAME DRUG! Even common drugs like birth control pills - can differ in price - by a bazillion dollars. (Rough Estimate) DRUGS FOR LESS shows actual PRICE DIFFERENCES and saves you money. And because it is written by famous physicians - known for their common sense - you can trust it! This book tells you how to get your prescriptions for FREE if you make a certain amount of money or less...heelllloooo...as a Flight Attendant who just took a 40% pay cut due to airline woes...I am telling every Flight Attendant about this book! And my mother and father inlaw who use over $700.00 every month for prescription drugs also need to know about this book! This book should be in every library of every "SUN CITY" residential community in the world! And should be purchased by every Business in America for their EMPLOYEE HEALTH program. I heard about this book when I was doing a television interview for my new Flight Attendant tell-all FLYING BY THE SEAT OF MY PANTS - I was riveted by what DRUGS FOR LESS reveals! Now I can't stop telling everyone about this book. What a fantastic resource! I wish I could make a PA on every flight advertising DRUGS FOR LESS. (But, they don't allow us to sell drugs or books on board.) GET THIS BOOK TODAY and start saving money and living healthier TOMORROW! Then come fly with me!

Great Resource .......2005-06-24
This is a wonderful resource for patients who have trouble affording their medications. As a nurse, I see this situation daily. I purchased this book for my father for Father's Day. He had already spent several hours on the internet trying to find this type of information and now it is right at his fingertips! This is a must have for people who need help affording their medications and for those who have family members who need help affording their medications.

Hard to follow.......2005-10-31
I purchased this book to find out more about decorated stoneware. This book is basically a haphazard listing of pieces that were auctioned off at different auctions. The descriptions are not always above or below an item. Sometimes they are very hard to follow. The prices are the actual auction price. No information on how to tell where a piece is from, that is not marked. No easy way to read this book.

Great Project Walls for the Entire House .......2005-12-07
This book has many of the walls shown on her Painted House TV show. I tend to TiVo and tape the shows I enjoy. Debbie has some great wall designs and very innovative wall treatments. What I like about her is she does the entire room decor. The problem that I see with most of the designs in this book AND on the TV show is how VERY TIME-CONSUMING they are. I know these designs get done because she has a team of painters, but I don't. Even though most of her designs are beautiful, they would take A LONG time to actually implement. For example the three marble dado on page 122 and the Elizabethan dining room on page 94. I remember this show, there were soooo many steps and it was all done on the ceiling. That in itself creates a totally different set of challenges.
I think this is a beautiful book with some gorgeous walls, but realistically I would not have the time to do over half the projects in this book so I gave it a 4-star.
I do have some favorites that do not seem quite as much of a time-hog:
~ Fornasetti dining room, pg 38
~Suburban update, pg 44: love the wide horizontal paint stripes
~Faux silk panels, pg 56
~Georgian Living room, pg 64 and the classic dining room, pg 76: has a tuscany feel
If you have the time, skills and help to do some of Debbie's more ambitious techniques this is a great book. If not, it's still a good book for some of the less time-consuming projects. I would also recommend Painted Illusions by Melanie Royals which have some absolutely beautiful techniques. Don't let the subtitle of Stencils throw you off. Melanie's techniques are also easy-to-follow and don't seem quite as protracted.
LOTS of Unique Ideas to Style Home.......2005-09-13
Want something different for your home, this books has LOTS of unique ideas that make you want to start right now! The directions are clear, consise and easy-to-understand. Ideas for young, young at heart and older people. Very pleased with this book and highly recommend it!
Eye candy and inspiration.......2002-08-07
I love color and Debbie Travis' books are full of it! Don't pay any attention to the people who discount her books as garish. She is very even handed when it comes to her color schemes--this book includes a whole room done in very pale sea-foam green; an airy, almost monochromatic "zen" room; and even some white walls here and there.
But the focus is on the daring, the new, the experimental and exciting. There are traditional rooms, in which she incorporates elements based loosely on historical architechture into a very livable modern room. I especially liked the Georgian room, in which she not only shows you the typical colors used in the period, but a wall technique, how to create an inexpensive freize, and a fireplace surround.
Each room includes much the same--a wall technique and two or three other projects to tie the room to the theme. Along with historical rooms, find also contemporary, country, and themed rooms. The photography is excellent (although sometimes does not fully show the detail of specific aspects of the project).
Overall the best thing about this book is that is shows color on the walls, something a lot of decorators seem to be afraid of. Once you look at the beautiful tones of the raspberry, burgundy, ochre, and umber Travis uses long enough, you start to see that maybe that might look good in your house. Hey, maybe not for everyone or for every room--but it makes an impact.
This is a balanced overview of different styles and colors, as well as an awesome how-to book. Even if you hate the colors she picks, you can learn more practical skills in two or three pages of this book than in all of Christopher Lowell!

refreshing!.......2007-02-04
I am an both a fine and graphic artist and its nice to see such ideas in print. Its a simple book but great for a reminder and refresher for stimulating ideas in groups and solo. I recommend this book for my students and colleagues alike because its short and to the point. Its also nice to hear how other artists get going on ideas and such.
The layout of the book is nice too!
Good book..........2005-09-15
As for the reviewer here that states it has "Little Undeep Thoughts.." firstly, his use of the fabricated word "Undeep" gives a clue to the reviewer, but secondly, they must realize creation is a mysterious entity, just as contributing artist Rich DiSilvio profoundly mentions in the book, "Don't always expect to find logical solutions in a logical place, as serendipity plays a part in the mysteries of invention." This is certainly NOT fluff, nor is the common sense offered by another contributor Alex Lloyd, who states, "Try really hard not to work on weekends. Nine out of ten, your clients will be enjoying the two days off with their family. So should you." Any creative person knows just how true and important it is to try and carve free time for oneself in the hustle bustle of deadlines and cranky clients. So that complaining reviewer here is either not a creative, or just expecting to find the exact answers to his own mental block with a current project. This book also is nicely designed, except the cover is a bit much and too cutesy. Granted there are some lame concepts and ideas put forth by some of the contributors, but it does contain good bits of advice and food for thought.
No Good at all!!!.......2005-08-20
IDEA REVOLUTION is a great title, this book is not... This book should have been called LITTLE UNDEEP THOUGHTS ABOUT DESIGN, casue that's what it is. Nothing usefull and mediocre design. Just try not to buy it.
Wordy and boring.......2004-02-05
For what it claims to be, should have been better written and better designed.
Great book for when you get stuck for ideas!.......2003-01-23
What a great book for creative people. It's full of ideas for ways to generate new ideas. If you're in a creative field, such as web design, graphic design, illustration, or anything that requires you to come up with something from nothing, then you understand that sometimes you just get stuck. This book can help you overcome whatever stumbling block has been placed in your way.
Book Description
From the beginning of the underground film movement in the U.S. and Europe, through the fringe gay world of the '40s and '50s, to the '60s in London and San Francisco (when Anger was at his peak of fame), to the present, Anger takes the reader on a wild journey tracing the reclusive, countercultural life of America's most innovative and highly regarded underground filmmaker. Known worldwide for his bestselling Hollywood Babylon books and his cult film classics Scorpio Rising, Lucifer Rising and Fireworks, Anger's aesthetic vision influenced such directors as Steven Spielberg, Dennis Hopper and Martin Scorcese, and can still be felt years later in contemporary mediums such as rock videos. In this sensational story of one of the century's most creative and controversial iconoclasts, the reader encounters characters as diverse as sexuality expert Dr. Alfred Kinsey, avant-gardists Anais Nin and Marianne Faithfull, rock icons Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page and Bobby Beausoleil, the Manson murderer who was Anger's prot,g, and a star of Lucifer Rising. A powerful and compelling read, Anger is indispensable for film buffs and is sure to appeal to the burgeoning gay market.

Anger Hated This Book, But Read It Anyway.......2006-09-13
Kenneth Anger deserves a much more serious and scholarly bio, but this will do for now. He's literally CURSED Landis for this work, and you can see why-- Landis has dug up lots of dirt about the controversial film-maker, and shares much about his early life (including his birth name). Reservations aside, Anger's lived such a fabulous and improbable life, and created such forward-looking and brilliant films, that the ride is a fast and furious one. Film students and fans of the counter-culture in the 50s, 60s, and 70s will love this, as I did.
Where is Anger's autobiography? Now THAT would be a trip to read....
Watching the watcher.......1998-05-21
I recommend this book to anyone interested in underground film, whether you're a maker or purveyor. Despite personal conflicts with the subject, Mr. Landis manages to provide us with an even-handed account of the life of Kenneth Anger, and subsequently, the history of underground film-making.
Personally, the most interesting chapters were those that dealt with the celebrities that crossed paths with Anger and the pretenses by which they did.
