Book Description
Adam Murphy, a twenty-five-year-old journalist, is chasing a career-making story of a serial killer preying on young gay men in West Hollywood when he is abruptly fired by the magazine that employs him. He soon learns his former lover has disappeared, but what hes about to uncover is far more diabolical than he could ever have imagined. Light Before Day is a riveting and complex mystery set against the gothic landscape that Rice has made his own.
Customer Reviews:
What a nice apple?.......2007-08-11
I must admit that I bought his first novel purely because of his Mom! I soon ignored the "apple does not fall far from the tree" because he was taking me somewhere else. I have read all his work and cannot wait for the next! So take a bite of this beautiful apple, the juices will not disappoint!
bitter and jarring.......2007-07-16
I had gotten this book with high hopes. Being a huge fan of A Density Of Souls, I couldn't wait to see what Christopher Rice's latest book was about. I noticed within the first 10 pages that this book was a far more gritty, de-sensitized, jaded piece of work than his first novel. Where A Density Of Souls was a tender, passionate, deeply personal story about one person and how he relates to the world, Light Before Day is a cynical, ultra-secular, hard-boiled, drug-riddled trip into the harsh realities of the real world. I wouldn't go so far as to say this book seemed to glorify drug use, promiscuity, underage sex, violet relationships, and drinking binges - but honestly, it focused on these dysfunctions so often it honestly made me wonder what Christopher Rice has been through in the last few years that's made him so jaded. I liked reading A Density Of Souls because it was an ESCAPE from the dysfunctions of modern life, and was filled with fragile vulnerability, soaring emtions, and tender sensitivity. Light Before Day just hits you over the head with its grittiness and materialistic, abrasive hedonism. I wish I could say I enjoyed reading it, but I didn't. I'll give the author another chance though, and see what his upcoming book is like. I hope it's much closer in writing style to his first novel. Oh p.s., I had actually planned on going to Christpher Rice's website and sending him this feedback personally, but I didn't see a link for readers to contact the author. So I'm getting it all off my chest in this review. Cheers!
Coming of Age.......2007-05-20
I have read all of Christopher Rice's books and with this one it seems he has really hit his straps as a writer. The writing is clear and punchy with a great story. It gives intersting insights into the culture of West Hollywood with a sympathetic and critical eye. The story has enough twists to keep it a page turner and although the lead characters are not always likable, they are real. Real enough to want to shake them at times to get them on track.
In fact the novel is very real. A great read.
Very Mediocre...Very Unfulfilling.......2007-03-21
This book was a little confusing and difficult to follow. I always read before I go bed each night and usually can't wait to do so. In this case, I wasn't excited to crack open my book each night. There were too many similar characters and not enough substance to hold my interest. Granted, I did read the entire book and enjoyed the denouement, but getting to that point was hard. I learned a lot about the meth problem in Central California and was surprised at the extent of havoc it wreaks. This book was definitely written for a gay audience (not that there's anything wrong with that) and that particular population might enjoy Light Before Day more than your garden-variety reader. I would NOT recommend this book to readers under the age of 16, or to anyone who is not completely open-minded. Overall, there is nothing really special about this book, skip it and find something better. I usually read about one book per week. I feel like this past week was a waste of time.
so bad it's bizarre it was written or published..............2006-08-18
Christopher Rice is a good writer, with an occassional sly wit, and a gift for spinning involved interesting tales. But he tends toward the end of his books to get a bit overwrought with improbable turns of events. This book however reads like a bizarre parody of his writing style. Too many characters, characters with nonsensical motives. This starts crisply, with nice scene setting background, but then a cascade of characters starts and it all falls apart. This is a clunker if there ever was one. Mr Rice ought to get new editors.

Customer Reviews:
thought provoking historical work .......2006-02-01
It is 1956 and Soho, England is a combination red light district and Greenwich Village with a definite feel of a neighborhood community. Same sex relationships, threesome trysts and having sex without being married is tolerated. Lizzy is still recovering from the death of her daughter a year and a half ago with the help of the people in the neighborhood especially those who hang at the diner on Old Compton Road owned and operated by Maggie and her husband Bert with help from their adopted daughter Rosie.
At the local nightclub run by Bandy and Sugar Plum Flaherty, the former's ward Peace, a Chinese- student, has run away from the boarding school and stay at Bandy's place. Bandy wants her to return to school but the child has been subjected to the prejudice of the students. Bandy, who is in the middle of a hot blooded affair accuses the girl of stealing her pearl jewelry. A hurt Peace goes to is stay with Lizzye who happily take her in. She comes to think of the girl as a daughter so when she disappears, she rallies all the people in the neighborhood to find out where she is staying. They learn that Peace has been kidnapped; using all their considerable resources, they try to find the girl and whoever is behind it who wants her shipped back to China.
Pip Granger has written an exciting mystery wrapped around a family saga. Lizzie doesn't know that when she takes Peace into her home she will end up dealing with Chinese Tongs and Triads, kidnappers and eloping lovers but even if she did know, she would choose the same path because she loves Peace. The characters are realistic and the bohemian setting of Soho is vividly described so that readers will identify it with the locale before it fell apart. This is a thought provoking historical work that readers will enjoy very much.

Yeah for Pip Granger!!!.......2005-12-31
Don't you just love it when a book takes you out of your normal life and totally into a different world? You can hear the accents, smell the fry-ups, feel the satins and silks of the dress shop in this latest trip into Pip Granger's post-war London. Soho is the scene as Peace, a young half English/half Chinese teenager comes to live with her aunt after running away from her boarding school. But soon, Peace has left her aunt's, accused of jewel theft, and is kidnapped by a Chinese Triad. Excellent reading.

Deadly Deadline.......2005-10-12
Riley Gavin, freelance investigative reporter, is on a much-deserved vacation in Spain when her agent, Donald Brask, calls her back to England. Two old, long-forgotten crime bosses have been murdered, and one of the major newspapers, anticipating a sensational story, wants background information on the two men.
Realizing there is much danger involved, Brask sends Riley to Frank Palmer, an ex military policeman, for help in her investigation. After a rocky start, the two begin working well together. As they start digging into the past, however, more and more bodies start turning up, bodies of the people Gavin and Palmer have been interviewing.
No Peace for the Wicked is set both in England and Spain, and descriptions of place are vivid and memorable. Characters range from the very nasty new crime boss to the good-guy-at-heart, John Mitcheson. The book is fast paced and action packed, and Gavin and Palmer make an unbeatable team. I look forward to reading the second book in this series, No Help for the Dying.

Book Description
There are haunted places. Haunted houses. The metropolis of Punktown, on the planet Oasis, is a haunted city. An unassuming and aimless young man has begun to perceive the city's dark tentacles in the lay of the streets. Its roots in the labyrinth of the subways. Its polluted taint in the eyes of the people he knows, and even loves. And this evil is stirring, building toward an apocalyptic culmination. The city is not only haunted - it's perhaps a living thing. MONSTROCITY combines elements of science fiction with horror in the vein of H. P. Lovecraft, taking place in the milieu of Jeffrey Thomas' acclaimed collection, PUNKTOWN - which China Mieville described as "searing and alien and anxious and rich."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent SciFi/Horror.......2007-10-10
Jeffrey Thomas' fertile imagination is on full display here in this exciting science fiction/horror tale. This is the first of his full length novels set in Punktown, the nickname of a huge future city on an alien world. As far as I know the novels are not related other than the setting and can be read in any order.
This is a Lovecraftian adventure tale that that is very entertaining. It's got horrific images; funny social commentary, interesting characters and a neat plot that keeps you turning the pages.
I really enjoyed the authors "Deadstock" as well as this one, and look forward to reading more of Punktown.
A Lovecraftian Romp.......2006-07-06
First, the good. It starts with a bang (literally) and never really lets up. This book was so much fun to read, I was stuck with a perma-grin for days. It's a Lovecraftian noir fiction sci-fi fantasy horror story and I loved every minute of it.
Each character was interesting in their own right, especially Saleet. We feel Ruby spiralling into (seeming) madness and coming out the other side. That he has such a mundane day job only makes it more fun when the situation unfolds. What happens to Gabrielle is downright horrific and wonderfully so. I do wish we got to see more of Mr. Dove, since he (minor spoiler) seemed like a promising villain. My favorite minor characters were the mutants Ruby met in the tunnel. The first instinct is revulsion, but of course they turn out to be good guys, and reminded me of the Ghouls fromm the Fallout games.
Now, the bad ... well, minor quibbles, really. The ending comes suddenly and seems just a little rushed. Its like things were unfolding at a certain pace and then, *BOOM* everything speeds up and ends. I guess I just wanted a knock-down-drag-out epic of an ending, and instead it was like zoom crash bang raaaargh eek slitherslither KABLOOEY ding, all done!
The reason I can't give this book 5 stars is because I didn't feel the same satisfaction at the end that I felt after reading, say, The Stand, or Mists of Avalon (modern classics as far as I'm concerned). So, no, Monstrocity is not a work of genius, but it is definitely great fun to read, and I highly recommend it. In fact, I will be buying everything else I can find by Jeffrey Thomas because these kinds of stories are literary chocolate to me.
Great Book.......2006-05-23
When I first went to read this book for a report in school. I thought it was just going to be another boring book, but when I opened the cover I could not close it. The book will sink you into its depths and have you wondering what will happen next. Jeffrey Thomas is an amazing author that uses great details. His style is like no other and doesn't go near the usual horror stories it is border line insanity in a way. If you love science fiction or occult you will enjoy this, it takes you to a place that can't be described or at least when it is you are just drawn in to another world. I would advise all to read it and continue to read the rest of his books.
Punktown always teems with strange life, but a life of its own?.......2005-11-18
Thomas's Punktown really comes alive in Monstrocity. Literally. On the fantastic world of Oasis is a city called Paxton, locally known as Punktown. An eclectic mix of races live in this squalid city; the native Choom, the Tikkihotto, the Kalian, and a heavy populace of humans who settled in the original Paxton and expanded it into the sprawling metropolis of Punktown.
The first-person protagonist, Christopher Ruby, starts his story by telling us of his new girlfriend Gabrielle, a fun goth-type girl with an open window in her chest to show off the tattoo on her living heart. Gaby has somehow gotten a hold of a copy of a recording from the ancient book The Necronomicon. Gabrielle and Christopher play with the recording, but Gaby's heartlight-tatoo goes out and she estranges herself from Christopher.
Christopher soon finds out how much Gaby has changed, and in tracking down the reasons for Gaby's behavior becomes acquainted with a bookseller named Mr. Dove, who puts him on the path of a horrifying discovery. In his research, Chris meets a beautiful and non-traditional Kalian girl named Saleet, who also happens to be a "Forcer", a type of police inspector. The more Chris uncovers about Gaby's deadly and fatal obsession, the more he realizes that Punktown holds secrets deeper than time itself, secrets of downfallen Gods and the occult.
Jeffrey Thomas's 'Punktown' is one of my all-time favorite fantasy worlds. This world plays a huge part in Thomas's works including 'Punktown' (get the newer, extended version!) and 'Everybody Scream'. I simply cannot get enough of it. Punktown breathes with its own life, steams with its own scent, and pulses with a thousand heartbeats.
Thomas's prose is precise and naturally flowing, managing to hook you from the first page and pull you into Punktown without the slightest whimper of regret. Even his non-Punktown works like 'Boneland' are rich with natural dialogue, fully-fleshed and interesting characters, and worlds built so visually accurate from a written page that you believe in them as much as you believe in the moon over your head at night.
I cannot seem to get enough of this talented author, and I hope that you enjoy his tales as much as I do. Definitely worth a purchase, and worth looking up his other works. Enjoy!

I expected more..........2007-09-15
Many of the recipes in this book are yucky. Not only that, but they weren't really 'shortcut' recipes as advertised. This isn't what I expected from the Slob Sisters, and I was very disappointed. It went to the second hand shop the day after it arrived. Please check this out from your library first before deciding to buy. It may save you some $$.
Wonderfully creative and makes cooking FUN!.......2002-05-19
This book is not only entertaining reading from beginning to end, it is truly helpful in the kitchen. Sure there are a couple of recipes I don't care to try, but I've cooked most of them already and they've all been big hits. All the Ladies in my church group wanted the recipe for "La Pate". (Didn't give it to them) The "Crock Pot Baked Beans" went very fast at the last BBQ we attended. The "Blue Cheese Chicken Italiano" has turned into a family favorite and The "Chocolate Mousse" impressed several friends. Now people are inviting us over for dinner and requesting we bring certain dishes. This book is the sole reason my teenage son has started cooking! He cooked the "Wiener Schnitzel" for his grandparents and they loved it.
Sorry, but YUCK!.......2001-10-16
This is a very entertaining book, but I wouldn't want to cook (or eat) from it. While there are a couple of ok recipes, some of them are real stomach turners, e.g., cut up some Whoppers from burger king and mix with catsup, mustard & bbq sauce, put a puff pastry crust on it and bake. Scrape the condiments off the buns, toast and serve along with it. Puhlease!! Lots of this type of recipe--not nutritious cooking, not even appetizing. Did give it a couple of stars for entertainment value.
A real time-saver.......2000-06-14
Pam Young and Peggy Jones have produced yet another wonderful book. This one, however, is less about organization and cleaning (although those are touched on) and more about producing good food when you're short on time. Their particular brand of humour makes this a great read for enjoyment even if you don't use the recipes -- although the recipes are great as well! Each recipe (with strange names like "Mucho Chicken Berserk" and "Aunt Peg's Five Bean Summit Meeting") includes approximate prep time, cooking time and number of servings as well as an often hilarious anecdote. Pam and Peggy focus on cooking in the real world. We don't always have the time to play Donna Reed and bake up a storm... we have to rely on Four Skor And Seventeen Pecan Pie and hope it tastes like scratch... and it usually does!
This is a great cookbook for empressing your guests easily........1996-12-09
I was very empressed with this cookbook. The recipes are easy
and creative.I liked it so much that I've neglected to return
it to the library.I'm so glad I've found a source now to add it
to my own library;I know that I will use it all the time. It's
full of good humor and great recipes -just what busy cooks need
these days!

A must for Flow Blue collectors.......2007-01-02
This book along with the entire series of Flow Blue books by Mary Frank Gaston are vital in Flow Blue identification and history. This book is brimming with photos and identification marks, along with manufacturing dates and makers. There is also a section on 'fakes' and how to look for and avoid them.
Each book has different photos of the many patterns and shapes Flow Blue comes in. I highly recommend owning a copy of each of Ms. Gaston's books if you are a true Flow Blue collector. You will enjoy these books for years to come. They are well made with high quality color and material.
Enjoy!
Organized and good!.......2004-01-11
I have been seriously collecting only a few months now and have decided to sell. This book is well organized and the best of 3 reference books on flow blue that I have. The hard cover is a good idea since I think I would wear it down to stubs if it had been a paperback!!
Fabulous resource.......2000-12-17
If you collect, are interested in collecting, or want to identify and value flow blue items, this book is a must. You can look up items by pattern, which are cross-referenced to the manufacturers' names. The book is full of color photographs of makers' marks as well as examples of hundreds of patterns on various types of pieces. The back of the book contains values for the photographed pieces. Another helpful feature is the section on reproductions. This is a great reference book.
An essential guide for flow blue collector's.......1999-07-28
This is an essential guide for collectors of flow blue china. It features over 400 pieces photographed in color and described in detail.
For identification purposes, all of the manufacturers' marks on these pieces are shown in enlarged b/w photos. There are also cross-references for manufacturers and their patterns and types of objects other than plates.

The photography is excellent. Captions for each item include maker & pattern, size and reference to the photo of the mark. This will be a great reference for the beginning or advanced collector of this beautiful style.

Book Description
Get into woodturning at the hands of a master with these 20 classic projects. Some early, basic projects will prepare you for headstock-turning work, including cheeseboards, salad bowls and servers, a novelty clock that really works, a gavel and anvil, a square-edge bowl, and an array of beautiful urns and goblets.
Amazon.com
Vivid colors, bold simplicity, textural contrasts, stone, tile, and stucco--these are the hallmarks of this refreshingly unpretentious style, which is easy to live with and surprisingly simple to evoke at home. Vibrant photos and detailed, practical text explore all the elements of the look and explain what to do with your own walls and floors, windows and doors, furnishings and accessories to re-create the look. And the 12 step-by-step projects (including sand-textured or distempered walls, a pebbled floor, a fretwork window screen, studded doors, and a mosaic tabletop) prove that it doesn't take a huge effort or a huge budget to achieve the relaxed grace of this popular decor. The sun-drenched rooms filled with natural materials and accented with the occasional exotic touch (a filigreed lantern, Moroccan dishware, a kilim rug, Moorish arches, Spanish-style wrought ironwork) are extremely inviting--you'll want to sprawl on a cushy divan and sip a cool beverage as you drink in the enticing warmth of this wonderful style. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
I had to purchase this book.......2005-11-15
I've checked this book out of my local library three times. We've been working with an architect to design a French country house, very simple. No amount of pictures has conveyed the message of simplicity to our architect. He kept giving us elaborate Palladian designs, and I kept saying, "French Mas". not "French Chateau" and certainly not some Monster House version of an Italian Villa. We've decided to end this expensive misunderstanding and begin again with another designer, this time showing the simple pictures in "Mediterranean Style" to convey the simple rusticity that we desire.
Simplicity, Warmth and Inspiration.......2005-02-04
Due to unforeseen circumstances whereby my lower living area was suddenly subjected unceremoniously to several feet of murky moisture, I found myself in need of a partial home makeover, but with a shoestring budget and a short time frame.
Fortuitously, this book came through it unscathed, and I took it as an omen that Mediterranean was the way it should be.
The pictures are strikingly beautiful, the colors breath-taking, and my family may not be over-excited to hear that the foyer will now be a washed purple color with an earthen colored roof, accented by a canary yellow metal staircase. The book banishes all fear of the lavish use of color, clearly illustrating how color can enhance your surroundings, making a cozy nest of warmth and harmony.
The furniture and accessories are all rustic and simple, the formula being wood, iron, stone, tile and carpet.
If you're the Victorian or romantic type, there's no toile de joie in lavender and pink in this book, no overstuffed chairs or furniture bearing the legs of any deceased monarch. If however, you're into relaxed, simple, harmonious, rustic and durable decor, this is a good book to use as a guide.
Amanda Richards, February 3, 2005
Little bit too rustic for my taste.......2002-12-17
I just got this book, and although lots of others rave about the photos, the style is a little bit too rustic for my tastes. If you are looking to decorate your home a la small Mediterranean village style, this is definitely for you. However, you won't find any luxurious palaces or mansions here. This book primarily appeals to those who prefer the simple, assymetrical, and distressed look that evoke a centuries-old Mediterranean charm. If your home has fitted carpets or wooden walls as is typical in the San Francisco Bay Area, the style just doesn't seem to fit. I am also far from impressed with the text as it's kind of repetitive, the author mentioned so many times that the Mediterranean style is simple, open, and it evolved due to the balmy Mediterranean climate! As if mentioning the very obvious once is not enough.
Magnificent!!!.......2002-11-05
This is a wonderful book, filled with pages of beautiful pictures and creative ideas. It is a book that will inspire you to redecorate your home a "La Mediterranea" or maybe even send you off on a trip to visit such magnificent places. I highly recommend anyone interested in Mediterranean design/decor to get this book, as it not only gives you ideas, but also some easy-to-follow steps on achieving certain effects as pictured. Thumbs up for this one.
Beautiful and Useful.......2002-05-26
I have the highest praise for this book and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates and wishes to decorate in the Mediterranean Style. I agree with another reviewer that many of the ideas can be easily and inexpensively implemented. The ingredients of style are all there, making it possible to create a Mediterranean atmosphere in just about any home or apartment.

Not impressed.......2007-06-27
Because this book was a reasonable size I expected bigger reproductions. Most of the prints are a mere 3x5". If I live in the states I would have sent the book back.
Poor quality reproductions.......2007-01-25
If only the reproductions were half as good as the originals. I kept it but had I known the quality was this poor I would have skipped it.
An excellent overview of master works.......2001-08-22
Albrecht Durer was a Master artist in many forms and this book does justice to his work. It has excellent plates and detailed text, and is a worthy addition to any library, expecially one which concentrates on fine art books.
If you are not familiar with the works of Durer, this is an excellent introduction. His attention to detail is unsurpassed in an artist of his time. If you are already an admirer, the text will give you some insights into his life and times that you had not before been aware of. It is a good quality book and well worth the purchase.
Great source book.......2000-04-03
This is a wonderful source book for all of Durer's graphic work and should be in every one's library interested in master prints.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, very descriptive book.......2002-07-19
I think this is an extremely well written book. It gives descriptions of each stars background and how their lives were joined together. The book is focused on how Tim and Faith "Found" each other. They both seem very down to earth and very sensitive and compassionate towards each other, which is rare in this day and age. Everybody is usually looking out just for themselves. Tim has mentioned time and again that they are never apart for more than 3 days at a time. The whole management, producers, band and family try and work together like a big family in order to do this. It must be very hard to balance family and career, but they seem to be able to do it. As they both say, family comes first. This is an excellent book of two Superstars and how they make it in this day and age.
