Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl is among the most influential works of psychiatric literature since Freud. The book begins with a lengthy, austere, and deeply moving personal essay about Frankl's imprisonment in Auschwitz and other concentration camps for five years, and his struggle during this time to find reasons to live. The second part of the book, called "Logotherapy in a Nutshell," describes the psychotherapeutic method that Frankl pioneered as a result of his experiences in the concentration camps. Freud believed that sexual instincts and urges were the driving force of humanity's life; Frankl, by contrast, believes that man's deepest desire is to search for meaning and purpose. Frankl's logotherapy, therefore, is much more compatible with Western religions than Freudian psychotherapy. This is a fascinating, sophisticated, and very human book. At times, Frankl's personal and professional discourses merge into a style of tremendous power. "Our generation is realistic, for we have come to know man as he really is," Frankl writes. "After all, man is that being who invented the gas chambers of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord's Prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips."

Book Description

Few books in recent decades have had the continuing impact of Dr. Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning -- the classic best seller now considered to be one of the most important contributions to psychiatry since the writing of Freud. In it, Dr. Frankl gives a moving account of his life amid the horrors of the Nazi death camps, chronicling the harrowing experience that led to his discovery of his theory of logotherapy. A profound revelation born out of Dr. Frankl's years as a prisoner in Auschwitz and other concentration camps, logotherapy is a modern and positive approach to the mentally or spiritually disturbed personality. Stressing man's freedom to transcend suffering and find a meaning to his life regardless of his circumstances, it is a theory which, since its conception, has exercised a tremendous influence upon the entire field of psychiatry and psychology.

Here, Dr. Frankl not only describes the genesis and development of logotherapy but also explains its basic concepts, and in this revised and enlarged edition, has included a new chapter, entitled "The Case for a Tragic Optimism," in which he updates theoretical conclusions of the book. The result is an invaluable work by one of the world's preeminent psychiatrists.

"Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete."

What is the meaning of life? Frankl try's to answer that through his experience as a prisoner in a concentration camp in Auschwitz (among others) and in his psychiatry practice after the war. Be it by grace, a miracle, or chance, he made it out alive. And now he is here to tell this powerful, optimistic story and help us with an age old question.

He try's to answer this question: " How was everyday life in a concentration camp reflected in the mind of the average prisoner?" This would later influence psychotherapy. Even being surrounded by so much evil there was still kindness to be found in an occasional guard. The prisoners were not always kind to there fellow inmates: there were sellouts and CAPO's; Capo's were Jews that watched over their fellow captives for favors, food, and extended life. Who is to say what any one of us would do. With misery and suffering beyond comprehension, "having a why to live for enabled them to bear the how". I will never look at that last leftover pea the same way.

Writing on his concentration camp experience Frankl briefly discusses "logotherepy". In a later chapter he goes into detail: Logotherepy (which he coined), the "striving to find a meaning in ones life is the primary motivational force in man". In his practice he uses a form of reverse psychology. The last chapter is on optimism during tragedy.

Freedom is only part of the story, he writes: "I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast"

There are many quotables from Frankl, I will leave you with this: "Our generation is realistic, for we have come to know man as he really is. After all, man is that being who invented the gas chambers of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord's Prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips."

In the end, there is that need for a reason.

Wish you well
Scott

4 out of 5 stars A great alternative to self-help books.......2007-10-06

I first heard of this book years ago through a strong recommendation by Stephen Covey in the 7 Habits, but didn't think about it until earlier this year when I was at Half Price. I was at the bookstore to buy another Covey book, "The 8th Habit", and then I spotted Dr. Frankl's book.

Nothing against most self-help/productivity books (I know I've read more than my share) but after a while they can seem kind of stupid. There's a point where some random dude telling you how you should live your life becomes a highly ineffective approach to growth.

Which is why Man's Search for Meaning appealed to me. Not only does the author back up his thoughts on suffering and meaning through extensive research, Dr. Frankl applied his ideas to help survive his three-years in the Holocaust, and so has a huge personal connection to the ideas he's presenting.

What he's talking about, as many others have agreed, is pretty straightforward: by creating meaning in life, you have the capacity to move beyond any hardship in life. But Dr. Frankl provides a way to really help internalize this idea, which is why I highly, highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars greatest self-help book ever written.......2007-08-30

Viktor Frankl's journey and his amazing survival techniques in the Auschwitz death camps prove to be one of the most meaningful books ever written. If there was 1 book that everyone should read in their life this would be my choice. Forget all those meaningless self-help books on getting rich, getting in touch with your inner self and all that new age baloney that might enhance your life but if your life has no meaning, no foundation for growth than nothing will ever bring you true happiness. In the midst of our greatest struggles we learn our greatest lessons and a life without struggle is not a life with meaning.

4 out of 5 stars Look to a higher purpose and transcend your situation.......2007-08-30

This book is really two works in one. In the first, longer part, Frankl details his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. His purpose is to demonstrate to the reader that even in the most horrific of circumstances it is possible to hold your head high and maintain your sense of purpose and optimism. In the second part, Frankl describes just how his "logotherapy" works.

This book, highly popular in the 1970s, is both informative and practical. If you hadn't previously figured out how to rise above the fleeting events of your life when they distress you, this book makes the process clear and explicit. It is in fact one Western version of some of the main tenets of Buddhism, which tells us that life is only an illusion of endless change, and you must constantly reach for the unchangeable truths beyond that illusion.

Having missed reading the book when it was first popular, I am glad to have finally gotten to it, if a bit late in life. I strongly agree with Frankl's point that "self-actualization is possible...only as a side-effect of self-transcendence". There are additional tidbits I found useful, such as the notion of "paradoxical intention", in which you try to consciously perform some action you are trying to cure yourself of, such as stuttering. Frankl also rightly reminds us that in each situation, you will know for yourself what the one *right* thing to do is, and you must chose that in order to be at peace with yourself.

I gave the book only four stars, since I felt it was a bit repetitive (I wonder what the original 20-volume German-language version was like), continually recycling a single core idea which could have been explained in fewer words - though shortening the text might admittedly have made it less effective. It is in any case a great work, a classic in the psychology and self-help genre, not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A good book to read if you are and don't know why........2007-08-15

Very interesting book for anyone who suffers and cannot find any meaning from it. Victor Frankel survived the concentration camps of the Holocaust during World War II. If anybody knows about suffering it would be Frankel. This is an about Christianity or Judaism... it's about believing that there is value in suffering and that nobody can take away your ability to decide how you will think about things in your life. Only you control your own thoughts. This is of course not for children.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and thought-provoking.......2005-08-02

Dr. Frankl's book is divided into two parts. In the first part, he eloquently describes how he survived a Nazi concentration camp. He took this terrible "opportunity" to learn how people survive crises and deprivation and horror. This section will be valuable to anyone, and especially to those of us who have survived tragedy and trauma of any kind (in other words, just about anyone again).

The second part of the book describes the philosophy of life and the existential theory of psychology that Dr. Frankl derived from his experiences. I am a practicing clinical psychologist and, while Dr. Frankl probably would not label my brand of psychotherapy as his logotherapy, I credit this book as providing me with a framework that had been missing in my work. Through my education, I learned many techniques that were useful to me, and I read about many theories of psychology and psychotherapy that were interesting, but I ended up with a set of tools but no toolbox to put them in. "Man's Search for Meaning" gave me the toolbox, or the framework that tied everything else together. Read it; it will challenge you and probably change you.

                  Book Description

Powerful. Sensual. Seductive. He is all that is shamelessly erotic in a man. In her sexiest Highlander novel yet, New York Times bestselling author Karen Moning stirs up a sizzling brew of ancient mystery and modern passion as she brings together a devilishly handsome Celtic warrior trapped in time . . . and the woman who’s about to pay the ultimate price for freeing him. Age-old secrets haunt them. Deadly danger and irresistible desire shadow their every move. It’s a relationship for the ages. And all that separates them is a mere thirteen hundred years. . . .

Jessi St. James has got to get a life. Too many hours studying ancient artifacts has given the hardworking archaeology student a bad case of sex on the brain. So she figures she must be dreaming when she spies a gorgeous half-naked man staring out at her from inside the silvery glass of an ancient mirror. But when a split-second decision saves her from a terrifying attempt on her life, Jessi suddenly finds herself confronting six and a half feet of smoldering, insatiable alpha male.

Heir to the arcane magic of his Druid ancestors, eleven centuries ago Cian MacKeltar was trapped inside the Dark Glass, one of four coveted Unseelie Hallows, objects of unspeakable power. When the Dark Glass is stolen, an ancient enemy will stop at nothing to reclaim it, destroying everything in his path–including the one woman who may just hold the key to breaking the ninth-century Highlander’s dark spell. For Jessi, the muscle-bound sex god in the mirror is not only tantalizingly real, he’s offering his protection–from exactly what, Jessi doesn’t know. And all he wants in exchange is the exquisite pleasure of sharing her bed.

Yet even as Cian’s insatiable hunger begins to work its dark magic on Jessi, his ancient enemy is about to obtain the final and most dangerous of the Unseelie Hallows–and the ninth-century Highlander must stop him from getting it. Nothing less than the very fabric of the universe and two passionately entwined lives are at stake–as Cian and Jessi fight to claim the kind of love that comes along but once in an ice age. . . .

                  5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-09-13

I am a sucker for these paranormal romance novels. I love the idea of being able to travel in time, to see things as they used to be. That love can win over everything. I think these novels take me back to romance novels of before as well. With the warring personalities. I like how strong Karen's characters are. Some times they get bogged down a bit with the emotional upheaval and their stubborness, but ultimately prevail in the end. I have enjoyed all of her books and now impatiently await the new ones!!!

This is the first book I've read by Ms Moning and I must say I'm quite impressed. With an amazingly delectable hero, a captivating heroine, and a playful, stay-up-till 2am story, this is a definite treat! Even though it is the 7th book in the Highlander series, I didn't feel disconnected and I can't wait to read the previous books in the series.
Thank you Ms Moning for this irresistible time-travel romp!

I read this book first in the series and then read the rest of them. I'm a sucker for romance, for intelligence and for poignancy and this had them all. When you let yourself think about anybody surviving 1100 years in a mirror and then imagine some of the horror and then the agony of finally having his shot at revenge and yet at the same time being faced with the dream he'll never have...well, it's powerful hard to put down.

LOVED Cian. I think that he and Adam and Adam's son were my absolute faves. The others were oh so close behind.

The hero has been trapped in a mirror for over one thousand years. Despite his curse, Cian manages to seduce the heroine and save the day. I enjoyed this book immensely, but only recommend it to readers who can suspend their disbelief about magic.

Every parent eagerly awaits the day his or her child will speak for the first time. For millions of mothers and fathers, however, anticipation turns to anxiety when those initial, all-important words are a long time coming. Many worried parents are reassured that their child is "just a late talker," but unfortunately, that is not always the case. Balanced with a mother's perspective and an acclaimed doctor's experience, this book gives parents advice on:*Finding the right therapy and therapist *Negotiating with school boards, teachers, and language specialists *Speech exercises to do at home with a child. The Late Talker is the first book of its kind, providing effective, practical answers to the questions every concerned parent asks.

                        1 out of 5 stars Find Another Book/This Isn't Helpful Material.......2007-07-14

This book put a lot of fear into me, rather than be helpful. The premise of the book seems to be that if your child isn't speaking as well as the charts say they should, then you need to get your child involved in INTENSIVE therapy several times a week ASAP or you run the risk of your child becoming very depressed and they may even become suicidal!! I'm sorry, but that's the LAST thing a parent needs to hear, especially when they're probably already anxious about their child's development or else they wouldn't be reading this book. There are much better books out there! Also, it had a whole chapter devoted to how fish oil capsules have helped numerous kids speak better... and although I haven't researched this issue and perhaps there might be some truth in it, it certainly isn't as the author makes it seem-He gives several examples of these kids who weren't saying ANY words and then all of a sudden they take fish oil and within a few DAYS they are speaking several words-yeah, right!!! I highly doubt that. Though there is no doubt that fatty acids are good for you and important, but they're not miracle makers. Anyhow, that's my take on this book.

5 out of 5 stars learning to talk.......2007-07-13

I have friends with a three year old who doesn't talk. They said this book was very helpful in giving help to the child and directing them where to go to also get help.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Helpful book........2007-05-24

I am currently in school for Speech Language Pathology (speech therapy) and this book covers in the first few chapters much of what was covered in my first semester in school. It takes hard to understand information and makes it very clear and concise. I wish that this would have been the book we read instead of the textbook we were assigned, as this one makes more sense!

Overall, a great book that everyone can get something out of, but it is especially geared toward children with apraxia and more than a mild delay in speech. However, I think the first couple of chapters are a must read for anyone with a child with even the most mild of speech delays.

Above all...if you suspect a delay, get your child tested! EI is a free screening for everyone, regardless of income! The earlier you start, the better the outcome. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!!

5 out of 5 stars The One Light In A Dark Journey.......2007-03-29

This book has been the one light for us in a dark journey of finding out how to help our son who has Down. Syndrome and Apraxia. Thank God we had a talented speech therapist who first diagnosed the problem. Since we have had an up-hill battle with therapists and even family members who don't understand that our son understands everything said to him but can't respond as he would like and the frustration that brings...

This has some wonderful how to examples of how to go about getting help and how to cope with feelings.

It is the top of my list of a number of books for help with Apraxia

                        Thank You

I have had this book for about 5 years and I have used it and looked at it so much that it is falling apart. I love that it has all of the recipes divided in sections by their fat content. I have to admit, I haven't tried them all, but the ones I have tried were all delicious. Buy this book, you won't be disapointed.

                            Product Description

This book is the second edition of a successful, self-contained text for those students and readers interested in learning hypersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics. Like the first edition, it assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow. Because of its success, most of the first edition has been carried over to the second edition with the addition of much new material.

This second Edition has updated figures and data to compliment the presentation and discussion of the fundamentals. New to this edition are some educational tools that the author has found successful in previous books, namely the inclusion of: (1) previews of each chapter written in plain language to inform the reader why it is important to read and understand the material in the chapter, to highlight the important aspects , and to whip up the reader’s passion to consume the chapter; (2) design examples scattered throughout the book to illustrate the application of the fundamentals to the design of hypersonic vehicles and ground test facilities; and (3) roadmaps at the beginning of each chapter to guide the reader comfortably through the material. New subjects discussed in the Second Edition include shock-shock interactions, hypersonic waveriders, and aspects of hypersonic propulsion devices, always in light of the fundamentals emphasized in the main part of the book.

Finally, this book is for you – the reader – to take you through an enjoyable tour of the world of Hypersonic and High Temperature Gasdynamics.

This book in conjunction with Anderson's "Modern Compressible Flow with Historical Perspective" will give you and excellent fundamental background in high temp gas dynamics. I think the third section alone of this book (which introduces stastical mechanics, kinetic theory, chemically reacting flows, equilibrium and nonequilibrium flows) is worth the price.

I am about to totally gut my master bathroom and increase the size by incorporating two adjacent closets. It will still be on the small side but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book covers the very small to the grandiose in size and style. The author discusses practical considerations when choosing each component of the bathroom and highlights common mistakes and misconceptions. There are lots of ideas and a selection of floor plans and whilst you cannot expect any of them to be tailor made for your house, they are a valuable resource to build upon. I would recommend this book if you are thinking of redesigning your bathroom.

Inciting Americans at home to do their part in producing for the war effort, the poster-inexpensive, accessible, and ever-present-was an ideal agent for making war aims the personal mission of every citizen. From 1941 to 1945, government agencies, businesses, and private organizations issued an array of poster images linking the military front with the home front, calling upon all Americans to boost production at work and at home. The U.S. Office of War Information created the "Poster Pledge," urging volunteers to "avoid poster waste," "treat posters as real war ammunition," and "never let a poster lie idle."
This colorful collection of over 150 World War II-era posters focuses on the theme of wartime production on the home front. The range of designs and images will inspire graphic designers, while the descriptive captions and informative text will interest history and military buffs. Some of the famous slogans these posters introduced include "When you ride alone you ride with Hitler," "She won't talk-will you? The enemy has ears," "This is America... Keep it Free," and "Remember Pearl Harbor-purl harder!"

This beautifully designed small coffee table paperback is the perfect guide thru US WW2 patriotic industrial and gov't posters. Yes, sometimes one may have felt "Big Brother" is watching, since these artistic posters decorated the walls of factories, building sides, and seemingly near everywhere during the war years. The message invariably was "Be A Nurse", "Help the Troops", "Contribute to the effort", and most important "Don'T SHIRK ON THE JOB..MAKE EVERY MOMENT COUNT FOR THE BOYS OVERSEAS!" Of course similar posters were designed and displayed by all combatants, and their messages were all near identical. The postwar industrial posters are also noted, and they were definitely childish at worst, compared with the noble and heroic aspirations sought in the best of the War Posters!

4 out of 5 stars Delving Beneath the Surface of WWII Posters.......2003-02-25

"Are you doing all that you can?"

That simple question, asked in a popular WWII, finger-pointing poster, captures the patriotic spirit that pervaded America.

Posters, according to the authors, deserve credit as "the ideal agent for making war aims the personal mission of every citizen." Further, "Poster campaigns aimed not only to increase productivity in factories, but to enlarge people's views of their wartime responsibilities." Rockwell's enduring classic images, The Four Freedoms, illuminate this ideological trend.

How did wartime posters inspire military recruits, help increase domestic production, and sell war bonds during WWII? What were the different strategies used by government agencies to promote American ideals, self sacrifice, and gas rationing to a scared and confused public? Which advertising methods and artistic techniques worked best? Why?

This concise, colorful guide examines the power, poetry, and politics of American WWII posters in five thematic chapters. Delving beneath the surface of over 150 colorful posters, the authors showcase and analysis the zig-zag evolution of wartime posters.

Personally, I found chapter three (Art, Advertising, and Audience) to be a fascinating summary of vigorous debate among message makers. How should the war effort be framed? Is it a struggle for truth and democracy against terror and fascism? Is it a battle for survival? Should the focus be on personal fears, national achievements, or heroic freedom fighting?

George Gallup, later of pollster fame, urged posters be designed to appeal to "the lower third" of the population. Other analysts warned that the Office Of Facts and Figures early communication efforts were too abstract and contained too much information. "It would be wonderful indeed if the psychological war could be fought on an intellectual basis," warned two critics "if the American people who will win or lose this war were so educated and conditioned that we could bring them understanding on the terms we all prefer. But, through no fault of ours, they unfortunately are so educated. And in pitting the strategy of truth against the strategy of terror, we cannot stop to educate - we must win a war. We must state the truth in terms that will be understood by all levels of intelligence. Further, we must dramatize the truth." Powerful images soon replaced statistics in posters.

The considerable efforts to coordinate wartime messages across departments also generated vigorous debate. Eventually, the newly formed Office of Wartime Information identified six basic propaganda themes for general information programs: The nature of the Enemy; the nature of our Allies; the need to work; the need to fight; the need to sacrifice; and Americans and our ideals.

This visually appealing book also carefully examines the proliferation of wartime posters, full of patriotic messages, created by non-profit organizations, unions, and corporations. The last chapter, Postwar Aims and Private Aspirations, focuses on the impact of Sheldon-Claire company posters celebrating the middle class home, the traditional nuclear family, consumerism, and free enterprise. It also features a haunting gas mask poster produced and distributed by Kroger Grocery store chain.

The epilogue, the weakest section by far, argues that the change in postwar workplace posters reflected a more condescending air toward workers, explicit anti-union messages, and the renewnal of industrial conflict between management and labor. This thin section seems both out-of-place and a disjointed conclusion.

Design for Victory, despite this somewhat weak ending, should satisfy the curiousities of graphic designers, artists, historians, and scholars interested in advertising methods and persuasive communication.

4 out of 5 stars A graphically interesting work not bogged down in history........1999-02-18

Anyone intersted in the graphic stylism, the stark imagery, the sometimes disturbing and sometimes hilarious generalizations made in American Propaganda during World War Two should check out this book. It contains many posters that I've not seen in print before, but unfortunately leaves many others out. From an academic, historical perspective the documentation and historical explanations for the U.S. propaganda machine are too brief. Still, the poster reproductions are fantastic, mostly in color. I would also reccomend Anthony Rhodes "Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion" for a look at other countries' propaganda from the same time period.

For many, the late Sir Nigel Hawthorne (who died on Boxing Day 2001, at age 72, after an eighteen-month battle with cancer of the pancreas) will always be remembered as the conniving, manipulative, and hilariously verbose civil servant, Sir Humphrey Appleby, co-star of Britain's witty, intelligent britcom Yes Minister (and its sequel, Yes Prime Minister). Though he won, over the years, four BAFTA awards for his performance as Sir Humphrey, the highlights of his long career were undoubtedly, for him, receiving a CBE in 1987, an Oscar nomination in 1994 for the role of George III in the film The Madness of King George, and lastly but not least, a Knighthood in 1999.

Able to adroitly handle both comedy and tragedy, Hawthorne's extreme success as an actor was well deserved and no surprise (at least not to us!). However, being shy and very self-conscious, he spent his early years as an actor living pretty much hand-to-mouth. It was not until he was around fifty that he finally found his breakthrough with the character of Sir Humphrey, the role which brought him fame and recognition and was the catalyst his career needed. It was also around this time that Hawthorne, having lived an essentially lonely, unhappy life, finally met Trevor Bentham, the man with whom he would at last find happiness and go on to spend the rest of his life.

In addition to being a gifted actor, Hawthorne is a very capable writer, and he deftly moves between a chronicling of his career and of his personal life. He tells of growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, under an apartheid regime; of his school days at the guilt-instilling Christian Brothers' Catholic school; and of his uneasy relationship with his father--a man with no respect for the acting profession. He's candid in discussing both his homosexuality and the difficult long-term relationship he had with a man with whom he was wholly unsuited. He also holds back no punches when it comes to his career. He's forthright in chronicling (albeit briefly) the horrible experience he had working on the Hollywood film Demolition Man. The few comments he makes concerning his Yes (Prime) Minister co-star, Paul Eddington, whilst not unkind, are not particularly flattering; and he is positively scathing in his criticism of the Royal Shakespeare Company (for whom he performed King Lear), who he felt behaved appallingly, both by their lack of support and by their lack of manners. Hawthorne devotes a fair amount of space to his discussion of the RSC and his experience doing Lear--perhaps because it was freshest in his mind (not to mention an exasperating experience). Considering its immense popularity with the public and the fact that it signalled a turning point in his career, it is odd that he did not devote the same degree of attention to Yes (Prime) Minister, which would've been nice. But that is merely a minor complaint in what is overall a very interesting and informative memoir. That he even completed the book (let alone provided such a coherent, well-written account) is amazing in itself considering he started it shortly after being diagnosed with cancer and submitted the last chapter on Christmas Eve, two days before he died.

The book itself is 340 pages including index (mine is the hardcover version). It includes 16 pages of b/w photos, mostly from Hawthorne's personal collection. There are photos of his parents and siblings, of his maternal grandmother, of him at various ages and stages in his career, of Trevor Bentham (his partner of 22 years), and of other significant people in his life. Finally, Bentham provides a lovely four-page epilogue written after Hawthorne's death.

Though not a chatty memoir, like some, neither does it sacrifice accuracy for the sake of a good anecdote. It is a candid, forthright, well-written account--one which I enjoyed reading and highly recommend to anyone interested in discovering more about the man responsible for creating one of the most memorable and enjoyable characters in British comedy.

                                  4 out of 5 stars "Sir Humphrey's" Story.......2003-10-17

Straight Face is a touching, honest, sometimes even self-effacing autobiography from one of Britain's most accomplished actors who is probably best known in the United States for is work as "Sir Humphrey" in Yes, Minister and, later, as the lead in The Madness of King George. Written during illness, Sir Nigel Hawthorne demonstrates a remarkable memory for detail, describing his childhood in South Africa, his unwavering perseverance to make it in theater, and his long search to find a life companion. The first 2/3 of the book offer the most depth. His schooling at Christian Brothers' is described in painful detail: "Should a boy be experiencing 'cuts' when the clock struck, the punishment would cease for the duration of the prayer, and as the last strokes of the clock faded and nail-bitten fingers flicked across blazers in the sign of the Cross, the strokes of the strap would resume" (37). His return to South Africa during which he was confronted with his "humanitarian" stance on apartheid ("I was at heart a wishy-washy liberal who made no stand on their behalf" ) is an interesting chapter (142). Those who inspired him receive an important place in this book from his parents and artistic grandmother to professional influences like Joan Littlewood. He was a very loyal man, even refusing to leave a bad relationship to join the man who would be his partner for life until he received permission from his ex.

Unfortunately, Hawthorne does not offer the same thorough coverage of his work on Yes, Minister. He writes of it with an almost "oh, by the way..." attitude. The latter part of the book seems to have been written with more haste. Perhaps declining health is to blame. The last chapter was completed days before his death. Unfortunately, the book ends on a rather sour note with his last theater work as the lead in King Lear. His poor relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the bad reviews seems to have left him with a bad taste. There are loose ends in this book (no description of receiving his knighthood, for instance) and one wonders if he was planning on writing another chapter or epilogue to put the book in better perspective. Due to his sudden death, longtime partner Trevor Bentham provides a very touching epilogue: "I hope there is an afterlife so he will have been aware of the shock caused by his death and the massive love that came (328)." The book includes two inserts of b&w photos. I also recommend the DVD set for Yes, Minister. It includes a bio on Hawthorne that has Sir Nigel taking the viewer to different places mentioned in his book, including the set of King Lear and to South Africa where he visits family maid Lena Goliath.

4 out of 5 stars Well told story.......2003-05-10

One loves Sir Nigel so much - after all 'humphry' has bacome a part of my cultural heritage and view of life - one hesitates to admit a certain ever so slight disappointment at reading this, as if one were invited to a lovely meal, yet have a slight craving afterwards for a piece of Stilton cheese, or just that something else extra to nibble on. He tells his story well and follows his resume with attention to detail and a large dollop of honesty. But for me personally, who knew his work from the many TV series, there isn't enough, well I admit, direct gossip. How was it to film 'Yes minister' year after year. He writes about this of course, but not at the length I would have liked. The book does not reveal enough of his colleagues of the series, and even of his own experience. The same can be said of the Mapp and Lucia series, I would have thought these two, at least, would merit a chapter of their own. But I guess I cannot expect Sir Nigel to see his life and achievement as I wish him to! His story is certainly worth reading, and is emotionally gripping.

Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, G. H. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush. No president has been publicly tried for committing a war crime. Yet these presidents have committed them while invoking threats of Communism, terrorism and the loss of American lives.

To win popular support for these foreign adventures, these presidents have lied to the American people, resulting in the loss of millions of innocent lives as in Vietnam or Iraq. These actions clearly violated international law and constituted war crimes.

David Model is a professor of political science and economics at Seneca College in Toronto. He has previously written People Before Profits: Reversing the Corporate Agenda and Corporate Rule: Understanding and Challenging the New World Order.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing too new........2006-07-26

Ok, the # of stars this book should get is conditional upon how much you have already looked into U.S. foreign policy. If you are just getting into this sort of stuff, then I would give this book 4 stars. However, if you have already read most of the standard texts (Herman, Blum, Chomsky, etc.) then you will basically be getting recycled versions of that. In fact a huge portion of the book is in text quotations from such authors.

Now, the book puts forth a dual thesis. Model sets out to prove that all the U.S. presidents covered willfully committed war-crimes, crimes against humanity and/or other breaches of international law. In regards to this, Model saves the end of each chapter to show exactly which International Laws, treaties, etc. were violated, as well as documenting the specific lies told by the administrations. These sections are done very well, giving you the exact wording of the International Agreements.

The other claim Model makes is that these actions were perpetrated with the intent of expanding the American Empire. Well, he basically forgets about this for most of the book. He will usually pay lip-service to this a few times per chapters, but he never actually delves into this.

In conclusion, this book is good if it is serving as your introduction to such matters, providing good historical context and quotations of seminal works on the subject. However, you might feel a bit cheated if you are well-read in this genre because of the lack of new revilations and the amount of recycled material.
