Book Description

Before the movie, this is the novel that gave life to Hawkeye Pierce, Trapper John, Hot Lips Houlihan, Frank Burns, Radar O'Reilly, and the rest of the gang that made the 4077th MASH like no other place in Korea or on earth.

The doctors who worked in the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) during the Korean War were well trained but, like most soldiers sent to fight a war, too young for the job. In the words of the author, "a few flipped their lids, but most of them just raised hell, in a variety of ways and degrees."

For fans of the movie and the series alike, here is the original version of that perfectly corrupt football game, those martini-laced mornings and sexual escapades, and that unforgettable foray into assisted if incompleted suicide--all as funny and poignant now as they were before they became a part of America's culture and heart.

5 out of 5 stars great book made into a great movie.......2007-08-03

This book is a great compliment to the movie. It goes into some of the detail for those who have unanswered questions about parts of the movie. Read the whole book in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars the 4077th.......2006-11-06

The book differs greatly from the movie and even moreso from the televison serires that followed it. Even so it is a very worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars mash: a novel about three army doctors.......2006-11-03

enjoyed this with the rest of the mash series

5 out of 5 stars Far and Away Better than the Movie or the TV Series.......2006-04-26

I read M.A.S.H. years ago and still pull it off the shelf for a good laugh. It is better than the movie--which I also love--and totally different than the TV series.

It is also NOT by Richard Hooker; that is a pen name for W.C. Heinz and H. Richard Hornberger M.D. Heinz was originally a sports writer and became a war correspondent during WWII. His collection of WWII pieces was published as When We Were One: Stories of World War II.

3 out of 5 stars Not so good, but recommended anyway.......2006-04-09

It needs to be said: people give Richard Hooker's M*A*S*H high ratings because it's nifty to read the source material for such a long-lived and successful franchise. In fact, on that basis alone, I recommend it (though with plenty of reservations). But this is also a novel that has been greatly overshadowed by all of that which it has spawned (I suspect many would be surprised to discover that it had been a novel at all). In order to be fair all around, Hooker's novel has to be divorced from its cousins in the visual media-at least for the moment-and considered on its own merits.

And, unfortunately, considered on those merits, it isn't very good. One does not have to be an elitist to marvel that those who came after were able to sculpt an Academy Award-winning film and a successful eleven-year television series from what is a very unrefined piece of stone indeed. The novel has little plot to speak of: essentially, surgeon Hawkeye Pierce is drafted, serves his stint in Korea, passes the time by pulling a variety of stunts, and leaves for home. If there's a message, a moral, or any kind of point to be taken away from the novel, I confess that it escapes me. The book really isn't an antiwar polemic except perhaps in its depiction of high-ranking officers as buffoons, which is hardly original. Likewise, if the purpose is to entertain us with the disparity between the characters' antics and the rigid structure of the U.S. military, goofy behavior in the service is nothing new as entertainment (I can think of three movies just starring Cary Grant that handle it better than Hooker's novel).

There are no motivations for the characters' actions; the dialogue is stilted; nothing connects the various episodes. While none of these would automatically make this a bad novel (novels are often good precisely because they refuse to take our expectations into account), the books premise is itself extremely flimsy and cannot support any further weaknesses. The most telling analogy I can muster is the "Police Academy" films-not in substance but in structure. Consider the bulk of the scenes in a Police Academy film; most are skits or pranks with little or no connection to the story and could be shuffled and recombined in nearly any order without affecting the plot of the film. The same is true of the chapters in M*A*S*H, where we just don't get the sense that we are going anywhere.

None of that is to suggest that the novel be avoided; as I said, the book is best considered as a part of the early fossil record of a franchise that is still strong over thirty-five years later. It's certainly interesting to see what has worked its way into the film and TV versions (though of course the later seasons altered the original framework beyond recognition). A lot of the book's elements showed up in the first season (the characters of Spearchucker and Ugly John, the taking up of a collection to send Ho-Jon to school in the U.S.-though he never seems to get there) and were abandoned soon after, and some things were altered immediately (get this: in the book, Hawkeye is married and has children). The book is a useful cultural document, and it is on those grounds, not aesthetic ones, that I recommend it.

Book Description

Grace Sherman
204 Rosewood Lane
Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader,

If you've been to Cedar Cove before we've probably met. You can usually, find me either at home or at the public library, where I work. I've lived in this town all my life and raised two daughters here. But my husband and I -- well, about six months ago, he disappeared. Just . . . disappeared. Where's Dan? Why did he go? Who's he with? Will I ever find out?

My hometown, my family and friends, bring me comfort during this difficult time. Comfort and a sense of shelter. I'm continually reminded that life can and does go on. For instance, everyone's been discussing weddings and babies lately. Justine -- the only daughter of my best friend, Olivia Lockhart -- impulsively got married a little while ago. My own daughter Kelly recently had, a baby. Unfortunately, she refuses to accept that Dan might not return to see his first grandchild. My older daughter, Maryellen, is more realistic. I think she's seeing a new man, but for some reason she won't tell me who it is.

Then there's Jack, who's been pursuing a romance with Olivia, and his son, Eric, and Eric's girlfriend, Shelly (I think she's pregnant), and Zach and Rosemary Cox, whose marriage is reputedly on the skids and . . . Well, just come on over and we'll talk!

Grace

5 out of 5 stars Suddenly winter in Norway does not seem so long and dark after all!.......2007-09-25

Why is it that so many bestselling novels, read and enjoyed by millions of people, are not deemed important literature - but labelled light stuff "for the beach or a boring flight", as the saying goes.

Will Maeve Binchy be easily forgotten, or Rosamunde Pilcher? OR, Debbie Macomber? I'm not so sure.

This is my first Debbie Macomber novel and I got instantly hooked. Macomber writes about real people in a real world with real ups and downs - people with real lives. And - cliché - she makes them all come alive. As Binchy and Pilcher, Macomber tells us that life such as it is for most of us, is a lot more interesting and dramatic than any fantasy ever made up.

Debbie Macomber has a very distinct, yet flowing, writing style. There are no boring, "standstill" moments. Every word - none to many, none to few - matters in giving a complete, fulfilling description of the various characters' stories.

In their search for contentment and happiness, these people struggle with marriage, work and illness. They love and lose, are scarred and afraid to start anew. Even the seemingly strongest person has hers/his weaknesses and vulnerability. In short, they are exactly like you and me.

To me that's exciting reading.

One objection, though. There are a bit too many main characters to sort out in this book. I hope, however, this will improve as I continue reading book 3 - if not too many new faces appear on the stage!

I applaude the day I discovered Debbie Macomber. 15 books altogether in the Cedar Cove Series! Suddenly winter in Norway does not seem so long and dark after all!

PS) I simply adore the book covers!

5 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT WILL KEEP YOU FLIPPING PAGES.......2007-07-15

Debbie Macomber is a very good writter. She keeps her readers flipping from page to page. In this book, she brings mystery, love, romance and shook to her readers. This is a book that all readers need to get. I'll tell you, if you get this book, you will never regret spending your money. I enjoy every great moment with this book and I know you will enjoy it too the way I did.

4 out of 5 stars A Quick, Wonderful Read.......2006-11-22

This delightful confection of a book begins exactly where "16 LIghthouse Road" left off. Again, we are privy to the secrets and private desires of the residents of Cedar Cove, WA. But this is no "Desperate Housewives," it's more of a modern, updated version of a fabulous fifties fairytale, where no matter how tough the problem or how unsurmountable the barriers, very nice people find their way to love and happiness in the end.

What's wrong with that? Nothing! Macomber has such a sweet, winsome way of writing, that the reader willingly suspends reality and gets caught up in the characters' lives--hoping for the happy ending that almost always comes.

In this book, we move into the very interesting life of Grace Sherman, whose husband of 35 years, Dan, mysteriously disppeared in Book One. What happened to him? Has he really run away with another woman as Grace thinks? Her daughter Kelly is still holding a candle for her father, even though she now has a family of her own; her daughter Maryellen is defiantly manless. But everybody in the Sherman family is suffering from not knowing the truth.

We also get to know more about newsman Jack, who is still pursuing Olivia the judge. And what's up with Justine, Olivia's daughter, who persists in dating an unsavory land developer?

All these plots and more wind their way enthrallingly through this book. Highly recommended for those days when you just want a book to take you away from it all.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars .......2006-11-03

The next installment of Cedar Cove introduced us to new people such as Zach and Rosie Cox who's marriage is going down to the toilet. It follows Grace Sherman who's husband has disappeared she thinks he left her for another woman. Justine who married Seth the end of the last book struggles when Seth is away in Alaska for work and they decide to open a restaurant to spend more time together. Maryellen, Grace's daughter, is fleshed out more as she becomes involved with Jon works at the restaurant and is also an photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Second In The Cedar Cove Series---Betcha Can't Read Just One.......2006-09-28

I admit it--I'm hooked on Cedar Cove. It's my new soap opera and I can't get enough of Olivia, Justine, Charlotte, Grace, Maryellen, and all the other residents. Debbie Macomber has done a superb job of portraying a small coastal town in Washington that lies midway between Mitford and Peyton Place on the sex and sin meter.

The book centers on Grace Sherman, the town librarian, who was deserted by her husband of thirty-five years in the previous book, 16 LIGHTHOUSE ROAD. Readers who were as mystified as Grace about where Dan went will finally find closure when the mystery of his disappearance is solved in a most unexpected way.

Another mystery presents itself when a mysterious stranger who looks vaguely familiar to B&B owner Bob Beldon shows up on a dark and stormy night looking for lodging. In the morning, the stranger is dead and the police are mystified.

Olivia's romance with newspaper editor Jack Griffin continues but is stalled when ex-husband Stan reappears on the scene. The life of Grace's daughter Maryellen is also explored in this novel, revealing her past sins and focusing on her current attraction to a reclusive photographer cum chef. Also, Rosie and Zach Scott file for divorce after bitter battles and receive a surprising child custody arrangement from Judge Olivia Lockhart, owner of 16 Lighthouse Road and best friend of Grace Sherman. Olivia's daughter Justine reappears with her new husband Seth and they overcome newly married separation blues and decide to open a restaurant. Their chef, of course, will be Maryellen's secret lover. Get the picture?

Lives intermingle, old secrets are revealed and new ones are hinted at. It's grand soap opera and hard to turn away from. So, if you'd like to know who the mysterious stranger was, if Olivia will choose Jack or Stan, if Grace can find a life with Cliff, if Maryellen will allow Jon to play a part in her future, and a dozen other things, you'll want to pick up 311 PELICAN COURT (that's where Rosie and Zach live). I know it'll be next on my list.

            Book Description

While millions of people in the U.S. are actively involved in some sort of religious organization, many people feel disengaged from their faith communities. More than half report that they really don't get the opportunity in their congregation to do what they do best. The problem is this: too many people's talents are going unappreciated. But it doesn't have to be this way. Living Your Strengths shows readers how to use their innate gifts to enrich their faith communities. The book shows people how to identify and affirm their talents, and how to use them for growth and service. Most importantly, Living Your Strengths helps people discover their true callings. The book includes an ID code that gives readers access to StrengthsFinder.com, a personality assessment that reveals the user's top five talents.

You may be better reading the original "Strenghts Finder" by Tom Rath. However, this is helpful from a ministry context. It is especially insightful for ministry staff, pastors, lay leaders, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Gallup Goes On and On.......2007-06-26

More ideas from the people that brought you "Discover Your Strengths." In this case they take on a religious bent in explaining how to use your innate talents to discover your place in moving christianity forward. A fairly simplistic look and quick read. Nothing really new in terms of life-altering ideas on how to direct your talents.

I was very excited to receive this book, as I had recently been to a workshop at a conference singing the praises of the Gallup-developed strength finder system. I was able to use the code in the book jacket with no problem and it was great to get the results, but I was a little disappointed with the rest of the book from that point. The bulk of the book is just descriptions of the strengths, so of the 30-some-odd most folks will only need to read their five. The rest of the book was pretty much five-point checklists with some ways to be in ministry, which, while nice for the layperson, wasn't the meaty stuff I was hoping for since I am in a church vocation. I am interested in perhaps getting the original (Now, Discover Your Strengths) hoping that it will go into greater detail about how to use the strengths, not just identify them. I'll probably flip through it at a bookstore first, just to be sure. I found the online survey very enlightening and want many folks I know and work closely with to take it! That part was very satisfying.

Quite and interesting and helpful title, if it is what you are looking for. It is a basic strengths evaluation, if that's what you want.... buy it, if not... you will probably be disappointed.

I heard the pastor of a parish that used this book and plan. We are beginning to use it and find it very revealing and grace giving.

Finding people to blend together in the parish community is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great for novice cooks!.......2005-09-11

Despite the insulting and demeaning reviews of some others, I like this book and am glad I got it. This is perfect for the novice cook or the person who is trying to learn to cook. I would remind the harsher critics that not all of us have been taught to cook by our parents or school or whatever. For someone who doesn't like to cook, is brand new to cooking, or the young bride or bachelor who is trying to learn to cook, this is a great reference with very helpful, handy tips. For instance, one of the tips is if you don't have lentils, use split peas. I would never have thought of that. I don't like to cook and only do so out of necessity. So using peas instead of lentils wouldn't even occur to me. Common sense? I don't think so. Not to me anyway. And I'll bet not to others like me who also don't like to cook or experiment in the kitchen. I have no knack for knowing what would be a good substitute for certain ingredients and this book is an invaluable resource for what is a good substitution. Everything I have learned about cooking is from books and this one is one of my favorites. If you are a cooking snob, don't buy it. But if you are a novice or like me and only cook a little from necessity, you won't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Convenient Reference for the Kitchen.......2000-08-03

After reading the other reviews for this book I was cautious about buying it but went ahead anyway. I'm glad I did! I've used the book 4 times in the past week. While none of the information is necessarily new and you probably already have the information in your general cookbook, what make this book great is that it is well organized and easy to use. I bought it primarily for the substitution section. Last night I ran out of sour cream for a baking recipe and I referred to it for a substitution (sour milk). I also used it to find out how many teaspoons equal a tablespoon so I could accurately add half a tablespoon (1 1/2 teaspoons). It also has instructions to make seasame oil, which I could have used a couple of weeks ago. I find this to be a handy cooking book that I expect to referred to again and again.

Is she kidding? Ms. Newens should specialize in writing for infants and toddlers, rather than cookbooks for adults. It does have one use: Your children will enjoy coloring all over its pages.

              4 out of 5 stars Kitchen Solutions.......2000-03-10

I liked this book so much that I shared it with several friends and coworkers. They were also impressed by the formulas and shortcuts. I made the barbque sauce recipe and intend to copy the spice mixtures. The substitutions would be especially helpful for someone with food allergies, health problems, or wanting a creative substitution in a pinch. It is a little pricey but the spiral binding and hard cover make it an easy book to use because it lays flat while you are using it.

1 out of 5 stars This book is insulting to one's intelligence.......1999-09-12

I was so looking forward to receiving this book as it appeared it would be full of wonderful information and helpful hints, however, I found it to be insulting to one's intellegence. Most everything in it is merly common sense. I believe even a second grader would be bored. Also, the content of the book certainly does not justify the cost. I felt taken advantage of as it is neither helpful or informative, and the size of the book is so small for the price. Not a good investment, and I am very pleased that Amazon.com allows a 30 day return if not satisfied. Thumbs down to this one.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for design fanatics.......2007-06-26

Studying Charlotte Moss' technique is a must for those who are designers and also for those who are developing their own design style. It is foreseeable that not everyone would covet EVERY Moss design, but it is admirable how her philosophy seems to center on a way of living, and showcasing your life, rather than merely decorating.

In her first book, A Passion For Detail, the theme is obviously denoted by the title. The book provides a great introduction and insight into Moss' technique and design style - heavy on the accessories and patterns (some might call it cluttered), but the decor is nonetheless tasteful and very calculated. Moss aims to surround herself, and those for whom she designs, with the things they love. Even if this technique amounts to a lot of "things."

The book is thematic and conveniently divided into five sections, but at times, the chapters themselves are a bit disjointed and the chapter themes, while vaguely associated with the pictures, do not seem very cohesive as the pictures jump around from house to house.

If you are looking for a how-to decorate book, this is not the book for you. Chapter Five briefly touches on Moss' technique, but it is more a study the pictures and learn type of book. You could reproduce the design strategy, but most of Moss' accessories are a bit out of the average price range and the style of decor is a bit impractical for most of us. But, even if you are scared by Moss' designs, this is still an important read for design fanatics, as you can still learn from her technique. The most prevalent lesson from the book is this: design is about style and taste, but it is also about surrounding yourself with the things you love.

5 out of 5 stars Interpreting English Country American-style.......2002-02-19

Ever heard the phrase "it's all in the details?" Ever wonder just how homes that grace the pages of the best shelter magazines ever get chosen in the first place? What's right, what's wrong, how can I get my home to put on its best face? What style is really me? Former Wall-Streeter Charlotte Moss, now a well published interior decorator, builds a great argument for discovering then developing a personal interior vision. Her stylishly decorated images ooze of self-confidence and clarity of thought. Well chosen fabrics and accessories, complete with understanding and ideas behind their choices reveal insight and a good sense of humor too. Moss notes that everyone has a passion for something, and that these passions are forms of self-expression. Comfort, style, values and personality are telling signals of the quality of lives we lead. In our daily frenzied routines, Moss advocates looking at your own home from a different perspective. The book's mission promises that a more relaxed and confident home will emerge. Mission accomplished!

I have read Charlotte's book, "Creating A Room", and prefer it while re-decorating. "A Passion for Detail" is a "look book" and sometimes a little too precious for the average household. But it is nice escapism

3 out of 5 stars Not so simple.......2007-09-06

I took this book out from the library. I'm glad, because I won't buy it. On the plus side, the pictures are nice and some of the projects are really beautiful. But it's called "Simple Crochet" and EVERY pattern but ONE is labelled "intermediate." The one "beginner" pattern is for a crocheted ball, not a garment. I was hoping for some "simple" garments, but I see none. And I'm afraid to try the intermediate patterns because I really am a beginner. Maybe the title is inappropriate.

3 out of 5 stars Who thought these directions were a good idea?.......2007-08-04

Before buying this book you should check it out at the library to make sure you can disipher the horribly written directions. It really is a shame because the designs are GORGEOUS, but the patterns are practically useless. I'm still trying to figure out how the author turns at the end of a foundation chain.
I agree the patterns could not have been tested and the editor really dropped the ball. There is an entire section of direction left out in the beginning where the basic crochet instructions are.
                        Very disapointing.

1 out of 5 stars Mistakes in the Patterns.......2007-06-24

I was really excited when I got this book because many baby patterns in other books are pretty ugly and shapeless. This one has *adorable* pictures and very, very cute designs. There are mistakes in the patterns, however. I often found myself having to scrap the written pattern, look at the pictures, and make things up as I went along to try and approximate. This is not why I bought a pattern book! If I had wanted to make up my own patterns, I'd do so. When I buy a book, I expect to be able to follow it. I also expect the author and publisher to have tested the patterns for errors or confusing parts. I don't believe that was done here, which is pretty disappointing.

                        5 out of 5 stars Simple Crochet.......2007-03-28

This book is wonderful. There is a wide variety of projects. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the pictures of the finished projects are absolutely delightful. One word of caution, although it is titled "Simple Crochet..." almost all the projects in this book are classed as intermediate and require a certain degree of shaping and finishing.

5 out of 5 stars Very pretty, simple patterns.......2006-11-14

Before purchasing this book I had only crocheted blankets, scarves and hats. This was my first try at anything more. I love it! I made the kimono jumper, the booties, the bibs and the heirloom blanket and every single item turned out just like the pics. I simply followed each direction step by step. I'm excited to try the dress next.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of inspiration!.......2007-08-02

My husband and I are turning our uninspired 1968 tract home into a 2 story Mediterranean. We bought the Kitchen & Bath collection to help us in the design phase. These are not "do it yourself" books. Instead, they help you focus on how to design a kitchen or bath that will work for you. They discuss types of flooring, counters, cabinets, lighting, and how to design a space that "works" for your lifestyle and that "flows" well within your floorplan. We have lots of other books with lots of pretty pictures of designer kitchens & baths but these books were the most useful when we finally sat down with our architect. Without them, we would have never thought to include a lot of the little touches that helped to maximize our kitchen space for the way we cook (canning, cake decorating, candy making, entertaining) or how to make the best use of our bathroom space (extra storage and accessibility) since I have a disability. You might think that your architect would help you with all these things but don't count on it. The clearer your ideas are and the better you are able to articulate those ideas to your architect, the better your design is going to fit your lifestyle and the happier you will be when the project is finished.

                        Book Description

The bathroom today is getting more attention than ever from homeowners, as they realize its value as a personal retreat and resale enhancer. Gone are the days of garish tile and fuzzy toilet seat covers: now, bathrooms are as much about taste and style as the rest of the house. People want them to be both beautiful and functional, and manufacturers have responded with many more choices in materials and fixtures. This book covers them all, with ideas for tiny half-baths, medium-size his-and-hers, and large, luxurious home spas. Specifics on ventilation, waterproofing, faucets, showers, tubs, and more give readers the knowledge they need to create the bathroom they've always wanted. Taunton's New Bathroom Idea Book gives homeowners hundreds of ideas about how to make one of the most necessary rooms in the house one of the most enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Not for step-by-step building, but good ideas & photos.......2006-06-24

I couldn't decide online and went to the store and bought this book and Better Homes and Garden Bathroom Idea File after flipping through everything in stock. I disagree with the previous reviewer; they do offer suggestions for small baths and modern baths. I was particularly interested in bathroom design ideas for awkward roof angles for the second floor of my bungalow. If you are looking for a how-to book, this isn't it, but it's a good book for dog-earing pages early in the design process.

3 out of 5 stars Very good for large bathrooms and styles tend to be more traditional.......2005-10-27

This book doesn't cater for smaller bathrooms. The pictures shown here are mostly for master bathrooms and doesn't give much focus to guests bathrooms. I find that the styles shown here are very traditional and classic in design. Not much coverage on more modern approaches for bathrooms. Very little coverage for Asian type of bathrooms, you'll find lots of emphasis on the bathtubs instead of shower cubicles.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, concrete advice.......2006-07-10

I agree the book may be misnamed because it has few instant solutions. However, it's one of the better decorating books I've read because it doesn't rely on photos for content. The author provides practical, concrete advice, such as creating a mock kitchen island with boxes and walking around it for a week before investing in one, to make sure you can live with the size of the one you have in mind. I have put into practice three or four of the general ideas she shares in this book, and as far as I'm concerned that's a pretty high batting average. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books for this........2006-03-09

I was fairly disappointed in this book. As an impatient decorator, I was hoping for a lot more visual ideas (and valuable tips). Most of the 201 shortcuts aren't really shortcuts at all, and more to the point, of the 201 there are probably only 2-3 real gems, the rest are wasted space. There are far better books for those who wish to improve their homes.

5 out of 5 stars Quick to read, full of inspiration and information!.......2003-05-20

I love this book and you will, too! It is loaded with information presented in a consise, easily digested form. Not only are there outstanding tips for every room, but the author includes valuable websites for further assistance, i.e., selecting paint colors, or choosing a countertop, to name just two. No need to read cover to cover unless you want to, and there is no dense text--you can thumb through this book anywhere for instant advice from a decorating pro--and the many color photos are a visual feast for the eyes, as well! Outstanding job! I look forward to the author's next work!

This book is a great BSB book. It has a lot of facts that I didn't know about. It contains info of how each of the boys got together. This is a great book for any Backstreet fan. If you have not read it then you should. It's very interesting. And it's got plenty of pages(152) to keep you reading. Also at the end it has two websites of the Backstreet Boys and a time line. A must have! P.S. It's 3 years old so on some of the info is not tue any more(you know like Kevin and Brian aren't single any more. Because duh they are married!)

It is worth the money. All the guys have their own chapter all to themselves then they all get together in the final chapters of the book. It is a excellent choice.
