I read "True Grit" with great pleasure, and after reading all of the five-star reviews of "Masters of Atlantis", I could not wait to get my hands on it. Well, I should have waited.
The only word that comes to mind for "Masters" is silly. The characters are not even slightly believable, and the situations are too farcical to be good satire.
The two-star rating I give it is very liberal, based on a few clever insights by the author. On the whole, however, I think a general reader would have to have an odd taste in books to find this one appealing.
Kooky Cults Without the Kool-Aid.......2004-12-05
The predilection of humans to involve themselves in cults is a perplexing topic that requires years of study and stacks of dictionary-sized psychology books in order to understand.
Or...
...you can just read Masters of Atlantis then move on to your degree. Charles Portis continues to hold me in awe with his deadpan comic genius. His silly plots read humorously on the surface, and move at a good clip, but suddenly one realizes that there is so very, very much more going on.
Where do cults come from and why do (presumably) rational people involve themselves in the nutty things? Portis' take on the topic spells it out in plain humor: an accidental encounter, an impressionable young man, the hangers on, the manipulators, and, gasp, the true believer who spawns a whole philosophy derived from the antics of a con man. Strangely enough, he begins to discern subtle truths about the nature of the universe. When the government gets involved things get sillier yet, but don't just write this off as fiction, we've all seen Congressional hearings; Charles Poris has got their number.
Line your Charles Portis books up next to your Kurt Vonnegut-they make great companions.
Dialouge and deadpan that leave your head spinning..........2004-05-03
I know the term 'best ever' is thrown out there too often and is in most cases downright cliche. But with this book, funniest book ever is an understatement. If you're a fan of deadpan, dry humor with witty dialouge and eccentric characters this book is for you. The first 50 pages are a bit slow in setting up the rest of the story, but from then on I was hanging on every sentence, not wanting it to end.
The character of Austin Popper is one of the most eccentric, off the wall, and laugh out loud characters ever written.
Let me put in the analogy of a movie. If you liked 'Royal Tennenbaums', this book is right up your alley. It has that kind of dry, acidic wit and tongue in cheek humor. If you're more of an 'American Pie' kind of person, you may be left scratching your head and wondering what the hell just happened.

this book is one of my favorites ever. i just love how portis's accounting is so detached and even-handed, while what and whom he writes about are so absurd and pathetic.
because portis doesn't try to write funny, the reader can absorb the outrageousness situations and dialogs in pure form. and those situations and dialogs are a riot.
small caveat:
while a lot of events happen, these characters never really grow or learn from the disasters they leave in their wake. there's no redemption or closure. although it spans decades, this book truly goes nowhere. if you can't handle that, you won't like masters of atlantis.

In the past few months I've read On the Road, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Catch-22... and this book ranks 2nd. It's catchy, fun, and truly different than the junk you can easily pick up elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and discover Portis.

There was nothing special about this novel. In fact the heroine was somewhat irritating b/c she was still longing for her dead husband for half the novel. I expected better from a kleypas novel.

Lisa Kleypas is among my top four authors. This book was wonderful to read. Historical romances are my favorites and I loved the details and the tension between the two main characters. Truly enjoyed how the leading man took to her daughter so well and ignored what the public thought of him. I read every Kleypas book I can get ahold of. She's wonderful.
This Was A Good One.......2007-06-11
I really enjoyed this book and I'm pretty picky when it comes to romance novels. I usually stick with Kathleen Woodiwiss and Judith McNaught for obvious reasons and I've run out of their books. So, basically, I've been on a sort of quest for a new author. Lisa Kleypas is a very good writer. The dialogue is very well written and I love how the heroine doesn't just accept her fate and fall into bed with the hero. I was smiling while I read this book and my husband kept asking, very cheekily I might add, what I was smiling at. I'm very happy that I came across Lisa Kleypas and I'm anticipating several more happy hours reading her books.

I love Lisa Kleypas. She is a very descriptive and creative writer. Her stories feel authentic. I enjoy her stories and this was one of my favorites. I usually favor Johanna Lindsay and Nora Roberts. I ran out of those stories and was searching for a new author. Lisa Kleypas's ability ranges between those two authors.
Delicious romance read.......2007-04-16
I randomly picked up this book at the public library, browsing to find a new author. I've pretty much exhausted Nora Roberts, Judith McNaught, and the other usual suspects. I loved this book, and it was so exciting to find a new author! The writing is excellent, much higher in quality than some romances. Some wonderful, vivid sentences and excellent pacing make it a lovely read. However, the character development is even better. And finally, the sex scenes are amazing! The tension and lovemaking are wonderul, and it's obvious that romances are continuing to change for the better as Kleypas gets away from tired stereotypes. Sex aside, this love story was wonderful, and I am looking forward to reading more of Kleypas' novels.

Some New Ideas for "Tired" Vegetarians.......2007-05-18
I've been a vegetarian for a long time and am sort of tired of the "same old stuff." Even though my kids are grown and gone, I bought this book because it promised simple dishes kids would like. I readily admit I am an uninspired cook and the state of my pantry usually rivals Mother Hubbard's. But this book, as promised, did contain many new and easy ideas and combinations that are quick to prepare from common ingredients. Many of the recipes use meat substitutes, which in my mind is "cheating." The way I see it, vegetarianism is a meatless way of eating, not making traditionally meat-based dishes with substitutes. Except for that personal little quirk, I'd rate it 5 stars. I appreciate the variety this book will introduce to my diet. I also really appreciate the "do it because it's healthful" slant of the book, rather than the usual "do it because if you don't you're a bad person" focus of so many other vegetarian cookbooks.

Typical vegetarian fare. I was looking for easy, simple recipes for my 5-year-old, who refuses to eat meat, yet prefers chips and ice cream to healthy foods. The recipes in this book include bean sprouts and other not-so-kid-friendly ingredients. They just don't impress my son. I much prefer "Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family" by Ken Haedrich.

We are two working parents raising our children to eat like us, ovo-lacto vegetarian with some fish. My 2-year old is a more adventurous eater than some kids, but his favorites fall in the ever-popular bread, pasta, and cheese categories. We have tried many recipes in this cookbook, and he has liked just about all of them. Several are now part of our regular weekday repertoire. They are healthy and easy to make. I highly recommend this cookbook.

This is a wonderful book, the author assists you with questions to ask yourself, and gives you many options. A book you will use again and again when considering window treatments. I bought another book, 1001 and one ideas for windows, and it didn't compare at all to this book.

Good, but not great........2005-04-02
All fans of exploitation cinema will find this a mandatory purchase, but with only 150 images I was a little disappointed. Another drawback is the absence of such exploitation classics as MARK OF THE DEVIL, PINK FLAMINGOS, FREAKS, REEFER MADNESS, MOM AND DAD, MOONSHINE MOUNTAIN, MS. 45, EVEN HITLER HAD A GIRLFRIEND, MANIAC, STREET TRASH and any and all nunsploitation and nazi films, but yet the inclusion of mainstream movies like MAD MAX, THE HOWLING and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.
Still despite all my complaints it's worth buying. Here are some of my favorites: KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS, SIX PACK ANNE, TRIP WITH THE TEACHER, SCUM OF THE EARTH, DEATH IN SMALL DOSES and THE PUSHER.
A good poster book.......2004-09-18
A good poster book for those who like exploitation cinema. The posters (and some lobby cards) are presented as they have them, flaws and all. (I have met the authors--Besides being collectors, they run a screening room in San Francisco where they show exploitation films off of prints, some quite battered, but that adds to the pleasure.)And fortunately, since this book was published, some of these films have surfaced on DVD as well(although I would love to see Skidoo appear on DVD).
Not 'Trash'.......2002-12-23
I've thumbed through many a poster book at my local bookstores but this one I just had to own! Probably because 'exploitation' movies are my favorite guilty pleasure cinema. Assembled here is some great art, when movie posters actually leapt off of the paper they were drawn on--to get in your face. New movie poster artists should get this book as a reference for their ad campaigns (and you can tell some are starting to...) In an age of such: passiveness in film, where everything is rated PG-13, it's nice to reflect on this golden age of poster art for films, that mostly, delivered what they advertised. A worthy purchase for the film fan.
It is TRASH!.......2002-11-08
part of the appeal of trashy exploitation films are their "smear" campaigns, one-sheets full of bosomy women, firing guns, cars in collision and whatnot. On this level the book is very enjoyable -- HOWEVER, I find the grouping of the posters haphazard (what is CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS doing in "Groovy Trash?"), many of the posters are in poor condition and the brief introductions to each chapter are highly irritating. The author trips all over himself trying to sound clever and fails dismally. Still ... where else are you going to see a four-color poster for SIX-PACK ANNIE?
Trash- Pick it Up.......2002-09-10
For those of us who have wished for a book that featured nothing but beautiful color reproductions or horror, sci fi and exploitation art this is our answer.
While I love books such as "Immoral Tales" and such, sometimes I just want to look at the art of these one sheets for refrence -design ideas, painting styles, etc... and many books will have only a dozen or so nice color plates while the rest of the book is filled with the authors interpretations of the films.
Trash's focus is on the art and aside from an introduction, (where the author does explain why they chose not to airbrush out the flaws and creases of the posters in the book) there is nothing but photos.
For those who want in depth movie reviews and director profiles, there are several books and web pages out there, but for those of us who also admire the long lost poster ART, this book has fabulous images.
My one complaint is that instead of changing genres each chapter (horror, exploitation, sci fi, etc..) this book should have been a series of books, each catagory being a seperate volume! I hope they print a volume 2.
If you liked this book, check out "Blood and Black Lace" (might be out of print) which has is the definitive book on Italian Giallos, and has many color reproductions of the rare onesheets.

Jorge Ramos does a very good job at presenting a good collection of very touching stories. These are the stories of immigrants from various Latin American countries. It is written in simple, very easy to understand language. However, it contains a few typing errors that should be corrected before another edition comes out. I highly recommend reading this book.

Acabo de leer este libro en Junio del 2006, cuando el senado de EEUU estý por aprobar o rechazar leyes muy ad-hoc al tema del libro (la amnistýa a los indocumentados).
Creo que el 99% del libro es de gran valor y expresa en týrminos muy amenos y concretos la realidad de este paýs multi cultural.
Tengo mýs de 3 aýos viviendo en Estados Unidos, y soy uno de los mýs acýrrimos defensores de lo hispano (y en particular lo mexicano).
Creo que el "sueýo Americano" es hacer un montýn de dinero; y cuando tienes mýs valores que sýlo el dinero, entonces no existe tal.
Todo mundo me cree un loco cuando digo que no me espanta la idea de regresarme a mi paýs; todo mundo cree que lo "obvio" es que nunca mýs quiera regresar a ýl.
En mi paýs hay muchas cosas malas; pero en este paýs tambiýn las hay, y creo que tambiýn hay cosas buenas que no son sýlo el dinero. La otra cosa buena, y Jorge lo dice clarýsimo en su libro, son los inmigrantes. De todos los paýses, no sýlo hispanos (hindýes, italianos, alemanes, etc.)
No hay que llevar las cosas al limite, y tampoco hay que creer que Estados Unidos sin los hispanos se irýa a la catýstrofe que Arau presenta en su pelýcula.
Pero, simplemente, los gringos tienen muchas mýs comodidades que las que tendrýan si los hispanos no viviýramos aquý.
Sin embargo, creo que tambiýn es un error estereotipar al hispano como el "jardinero", la "domýstica", el "albaýil". Existe mucho hispano exitoso (empresario, gerente, director, ingeniero, acadýmico) que se habla al tý por tý con los gringos (y muchas veces hasta los supera); y creo que ESOS tambiýn son muy importantes. Y Jorge adecuadamente los destaca.
ýPorquý una estrella menos? Porque lo ýnico en lo que no estoy de acuerdo es en que Jorge "defienda" al Spaniglish.
Un lector en esta misma lista de opiniones menciona que el Spanglish es un poco mýs resultado de que gente hispana que NO HABLA BIEN EL ESPAýOL, comienza a combinar su lengua materna con un mal inglýs y de ahý resulta el Spanglish.
Estoy de acuerdo con Jorge que el espaýol no necesriamente tiene que ser una "reglita" para complacer a los "ilustres" (asý, entre comillas lo menciona Jorge) acadýmicos de la Real Academia de la Lengua Espaýola. Esas son payasadas.
Sin embargo, tampoco es justificable "descomponer" horriblemente el espaýol diciendo "te llamo para atrýs" en lugar de decir "te regreso la llamada" o "te vuelvo a hablar" o cualquier otra forma en que otros paýses hispanos lo digan.
"Te llamo pa' trýs" suena simplemente muy vulgar; muy "pocho".
No, creo que lo ýnico que "mancha" este libro es la opiniýn de Jorge del "Spanglish". Fuera de eso, es un libro excelente, muy ameno, fýcil de leer, muy realista, muy humano, y que vale la pena que NO SýLO los que vivimos aquý (legales o ilegales), sino nuestros compatriotas en nuestros paýses de origen, lean.
(Caray Jorge, tendrýs que "pasarme una corta feria", como decimos en Mýxico - y no es Spaniglish - por esta recomendaciýn... ýno? =-) ).

Compré este libro para entender mejor "la otra cara de America." Soy estadounidense pero siempre he tenido amigos hispanos y he disfrutado la cultural hispana. Después de leer este libro ahora me siento como entiendo la cultural aun más y veo la importancia de la presencia vital los inmigrantes hispanos en este pais. Apoyo y respeto a todos Uds.

Nadamas quiero compartir con todos ustedes que leer el libro "La Otra Cara De America" Me hizo recordar la experiencia que vivi cuando vine a los Estados Unidos Illegal hace nueve anos y medio. Yo experimente en carne propia lo que muchos inmmigrantes han experimientado solo por venir en busca de una mejor vida. Soy hija de inmmigrates Mexicanos quienes tambien experimentaron crusar la frontera illegal. Gracias a Dios ahora somos ciudadanos pero eso no quiere decir que ya no seamos descriminados por nuestro color de piel or por el puro hecho de hablar Espanol en lugares publicos. Yo recomiendo mucho este libro. Para quienes llegaron a este pais illegal y para aquellos que entraron legal. La inmigracion a los Estados Unidos es el fenomeno demografico mas contundente de la historia. El camino de Sur a Norte que emprenden diariamente multitudes colmadas de frustraciones y de esperanzas esta cambiando el rostro de America. Debemos decir por ello que el tema abordado por Jorge Ramos es el tema mas apasionante de nuestro tiempo.
Con sencillez de periodista y con la honestidad de quien es tambien un inmigrante, nos entrega una vision que muchos desconocian. No hay una pretension literaria sino puramente periodistica, y por eso creo que para tener una vision completa yo recomendaria leer junto a este libro ese fenomeno editorial que es "Los suenos de America" de Gonzalez Viana, que aqui en NYC es el segundo o tercer libro mas leido en espanol.

Jorge Ramos, the well respected news anchorman for Univision, the Spanish-speaking channel in the United States, has written an excellent book about his thorough research on immigration -- including well thought out views on the Elian case -- throughout his long career as a journalist. He uses a no-holds-barred approach to his writing and sends the message across without sugar-coating the events -- like a true newsman.
I look up to brilliant journalists to improve or critique my own career, and I have been watching Ramos as a presenter for the world evening news on Univision since I was a little girl. I looked forward to reading this book and I am glad I did. La Otra Cara de America (The Other Side of America) should have been translated in English so it could have been appreciated by everyone in this country. I highly recommend it.
