Book Description
New York City Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt is convinced that anarchists are responsible for the death of a wealthy industrialist. Assigned with proving this suspicion, Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy finds himself turning to his unrequited love--midwife Sarah Brandt--for help in navigating the high circles of Fifth Avenue society to catch a killer.

Anarchists?.......2007-08-22
Ms. Thompson is bringing in the world of the late 19th century anarchists which I can't help but compare to our idea of modern-day terrorists. In this book a wealthy businessman is blown up by a bomb planted in his office. Frank Malloy is told by his superior, Teddy Roosevelt that it was probably anarchists. Frank tries to find out the truth, and he enlists the aid of his friend Sarah Brandt and surprisingly, Sarah Brandt's mother, Elizabeth Decker. On the way these three find more suspects and motives than they can believe, and they are thrust into the middle of a truly disfunctional family. There are anarchists on the fringes of this family, but Frank and Sarah start looking closer to home to find their murderer. This series is entertaining, and I like the setting - late 19th century New York City. I also like Frank and Sarah, and the mysteries are always intriguing, and a little difficult to figure out. Fans of historical mysteries will like this series.
Perfect present.......2007-07-07
I got this book for my sister as a gift. She loves this author and said this book was no exception. She thought the writing was superb.
Good easy read with plenty of twists and turns........2007-04-08
After years of searching for something to fill the gap in Victorian reading left by Caleb Carr, I stumbled upon this book at the library. It was easy enough to get into and a light quick read with just enough side characters and plot twists to make it interesting. The addition of Frank's child and Sarah's interest in Aggie added a little depth to both characters and the secreted love between them added even more. A great, quick and easy read, not too deep, yet still thought provoking and left me wanting more (I subsequently went out and bought the first book in the series).
I nice, compact story, that does justice to the interesting era in which it was placed. Looking forward to reading the others.
6th entry in Gaslight Mystery series worth 4-1/2 stars.......2006-09-13
Murder on Marble Row by Victoria Thompson is the sixth installment in the Gaslight Mystery series starring midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. While not as strong as the last entry, this is still a fascinating mystery. This time Malloy is ordered by Police Comissioner Teddy Roosevelt to look into the bombing of a wealthy industrialist, Gregory Van Dyke. Sarah, as usual, ends up helping with the investigation, and the two are pulled in two directions: towards the suspected anarchists and the tawdry family feuds that were hidden behind the marble facade of the victim's house. The last book focused heavily on the relationship between Frank and Sarah. This book introduces Frank to Sarah's family and the high society she came from. Thompson writes highly charged dialogue between the two that is realistic and on occasion humorous. This is currently one of my favorite series.
A great book from a great series.......2006-07-27
I first bought this book and then had to go back and get the rest of the series. It is a very well written series which gives a sort of feel for the history of the time/area with all the enjoyment of reading a mystery and not a history book.

A deception.......2006-07-28
Ruth Rendell is one of the First Ladies of Misteries but this book of short tales falls short of possible expectations from such a star; small stories, some obvious, and looks like she wrote mementoes in her pocket book to write novels with those subjects, but never maneged to do them. OK, not so good tales from Ruth Rendell are better than some misteries from other writers, but there is no comparison between this book and her others, writing either as Ruth Rendell or Barbara Vine

Kedryn, the young prince prophesied the sacred Book of Kyrie, has led the Three Kingdoms to victory over the barbaric northern Hordes commanded by the demonic Taws, the fire-born Messenger of the war-god Ashar. But victory had a terrible price. Kedryn was blinded by an ensorcelled sword in his hour of triumph. Now he must journey into the abode of the dead, accompanied by his beloved Wynett, on a perilous quest to confront the shade of the warrior who wielded the blade. In Kendryn's absence, Taws the Messenger rises again, using his terrible magic to foment bloodshed and rebellion among the Kingdoms. A vivid and exciting tale of courage, adventure, and dark magic by an exciting new fantasy talent, The Usurper is the second spellbinding novel in The Books of the Kingdoms.
Customer Reviews:
Exquisitely written fantasy.......2000-03-30
This novel picks up where "Wrath of Ashar" left off. While not as popular as other mainstream fantasy novels, this is truly a splendid example of what great writing can go into the genre. Filled with intrigue and a deep plot drama, I would recommend this novel to anyone with a taste for good authorship and fantasy.
Book Description
We are on the cusp of an enormous breakthrough in preventing heart attacks -- forever. In The Heart of the Matter, Dr. Peter Salgo, associate director of the Open Heart ICU at New York Presbyterian Hospital, offers a simple formula to treat people before they get sick, which in turn will prevent heart attacks before they occur.
For the first time in history, we know what really causes heart attacks. And that knowledge has led Dr. Salgo to this amazingly simple and straightforward program that will save millions of lives.
- First, everyone will benefit from statins, the cholesterol-busting drugs marketed as Lipitor, Zocor, and others -- which Dr. Salgo say should be available over the counter.
- Next, everyone should be tested for a silent infection called chlamydia pneumonia. Not to be confused with the sexually transmitted disease, chlamydia pneumonia is a common bacteria that more than half of all Americans have been exposed to without knowing it. Dr. Salgo explains the links between this disease and the causes of heart attacks. This is huge news because if heart disease is an infectious disease, then it can be prevented and cured with antibiotics.
- The final ingredient is aspirin. We always knew that it prevented heart attacks, but Dr. Salgo explains why in layman's terms.
This groundbreaking book also offers a self-test that readers can take to assess their own personal risk for heart disease.
The Heart of the Matter is the beginning of a change in the treatment of heart disease. It introduces a preventative program that includes traditional diet and exercise guidelines as well as a blanket recommendation that adults, even young adults, incorporate medicines into their ongoing pursuit of health and longevity -- which, until now, seemed impossible to many. Now, without using a lot of indecipherable medical jargon, this invaluable new guide will show you exactly how to attain that longer, healthier life that so many people wish for.
Customer Reviews:
A matter of fact book that might save my life.......2004-06-01
I was lucky to stumble across an advance reading copy of Peter Salgo's book "The Heart of the Matter," written with Joe Layden. I love Joe Layden's books, he is an expert at every kind of expository writing, and he's very good at translating the language of public figures into a sturdy prose tailored to each figure he's ghosting for. He's the one who wrote the Rock's autobiography. But now that he has worked with Peter Salgo he has actually done something of a public service.
Salgo's three-pronged prescription may be controversial--and indeed so simple that you could condense the message of this book into 10 words or less, like an old time telegram--but I feel confident that he is on the right track. And so does my own cardiologist. Maybe in the future we will all be learning a pattern of dependence on statins as a daily thing, the way we learn to brush our teeth. And keeping chlamydia at bay is bound to be a good thing in the long run. Good work, Salgo and Layden.
Thought provoking information.......2004-03-19
I found "The Heart of the Matter" extremely interesting, thought provoking and hightly believable because it was so well documented with a bibliography with listed source materials from respected national journals less than four or five years old! I'm a little uncomfortable with the need for antibiotics but - since heart disease is an infectious disease our options are limited. The book was easy to read and understand. What do I plan to do with the information - don't know yet - I'm still thinking Wow!
Bound to be controversial -- but arguably a lifesaver.......2004-02-16
It's fascinating to me that two respected and reputable New York cardiologists, Peter Salgo in "The Heart of the Matter" and Jonathan Sackner Bernstein in "Before It Happens to You," have come out in the same month with books espousing the unusual, rather heretical view that most Americans, even those regarded as healthy, would benefit from taking the popular cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins. The two books differ in several ways -- Salgo also focuses on aspirin and an infection that many Americans may harbor, Bernstein on the benefits of ACE inhibitors, etc. -- and I think the Bernstein book is a little more repetitive than the Salgo book and perhaps written on a slightly more casual level. But what's remarkable, to me at least, is that these books agree on the usefulness of statins, in fact on the crucial NEED for them: that is, the need to take them NOW instead of waiting till you've suffered a heart attack (when these drugs are generally prescribed). The two physicians are bluntly dismissive of the conventional wisdom that one should attempt to control cholesterol primarily by exercising more and altering one's diet. They don't say that these are bad choices, simply that they don't help very much; exercise and diet are relatively ineffective because 80 percent of one's cholesterol level is genetically determined and is not amenable to lifestyle changes. Salgo and Bernstein are, I think, rather courageous in advocating a solution so unfashionable; indeed, they are "thinking the unthinkable" -- that there IS a sort of pharmacological "quick fix" that happens to be safe and inexpensive; that swallowing some pills every day will actually lengthen our lives; and no doubt there are many well-meaning souls who will try to shout them down. I suspect, though, having read both books and having found them both persuasive, that Americans might well live significantly longer if they followed these doctors' advice.
I can't imagine that this is a healthy approach.......2004-02-10
You don't need a medical background to know that a healthy lifestyle will prevent heart disease and help reverse it if you already have it. One of the reviewers praised this book because it doesn't focus on diet, but having a healthy diet is good for the heart. I am always supicious of "quick-fix" approaches to complicated problems and this book falls into that category. I think we are far too quick to rush to instant solutions instead of doing the hard work we need to do in order to maintain our health and correct our problems. Who knows what information will come out about statin drugs in the future, just like doctors are now worried about resistance to antibiotics because antibiotics have been so overused. Old-fashioned approaches like diet and exercise should be the foundation of a heart program. Then if that doesn't work, maybe you need medicine.
Dangerous and Irresponsible.......2004-02-07
This book is deeply problematic. The authors recommend a cardiac care program consisting essentially of three components--statins, aspirin and chlamydia testing. There is increasing evidence that statin drugs are linked to muscle wasting conditions, fatigue, memory loss and other problematic symptoms, even when liver enzymes are normal. Too many people who complain of these symptoms to physicians are told that these are just "normal signs of aging." That's not true! There are excellent, responsible, integrative methods that can reduce cholesterol and cardiac inflammation without such dangerous means. At least they should be tried, before statin treatment is initiated. Exercise, dietary changes, stress reduction and other means are de-emphasized in this book, and these should form the mainstays of a good cardiac care program. As a medical social worker who deals with cardiac patients, I work with many physicians, including cardiologists, who were appalled.

This unique cookbook combines the doctrine of Feng Shui with the 5-element nutrition theory. Both ideas, originally from China, offer a holistic cooking and eating approach for better health and happiness.
The first third of the book offers an overview of the Feng Shui theory of enhancing the free flow of "chi" in the kitchen. The right arrangement of furniture, harmonious colors, and materials are some of the important elements.
The remaining chapters feature recipes divided according to the 5 elements - wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. An emphasis is placed on balancing the yin and yang of food, seasons, and more.

For any mystery fan.......2006-08-17
This is not a story, it's an informational book about Nancy Drew. Everythin in it is factual and it even shares a few mysteries of the life of Nancy Drew. I recomend this book to any mystery fan, ND fan, or the curious reader.
Purchase of book from another dealer........2005-07-05
Outstanding service. Book was in better than expected condition.
Nancy Drew collectors MUST HAVE this book!.......2001-11-26
This was the best and most well-researched book I've ever read about Nancy Drew. Not only does Ms. Plunkett-Powell "introduce" us to the REAL Carolyn Keene -- Mildred Wirt Benson -- but she gives us a history of how the idea for Nancy Drew was born and some of the politics involved in it for Wirt when Stratmeyer died and his daughter, Harriet, took over everything and tried to control too much of the writing. We learn which NDs weren't written by Wirt, and how much of the writing was changed as well as the covers.
She tells collectors how to know the worth of their stash. She goes through each of the characters and their start with the series. She even talks about the TV show and MOVIES in the 1930s that were made -- more for the fun of it than to truly showcase the books. Info about Russell Tandy, the illustrator of the early books and the first to design covers, also is described.
She hasn't forgotten anything. It's truly a work of genius for the Nancy Drew collector, a "must have" for all of us!
The Mystery of Nancy Drew's Ghostwriter...solved!.......2001-06-18
...and other fascinating background trivia for the queen-of-teen-sleuth buffs! I'm not a true Nancy Drew fan, I'm a bookseller with a mercenary interest in the vintage teenage sleuth, but this book almost made me a believer! The author approaches her subject matter with the infectious enthusiasm of the true fan, and delves into carefully guarded mysteries of secret ghostwriter identities, Riverview's true location, and other gems of trivia too numerous to cite, with a determination and verve Nancy herself would be proud of! Fun to read, captivating, and informative to the collector and bookseller alike! (and by the way, the writing is adult-level, not 4-8 yrs., as the description implies!)
Just as much fun as a Nancy Drew mystery!.......1999-10-19
What a fun read! I loved seeing all the old pictures, and was amazed by the "behind the scenes" intrigue of the Nancy Drew publishing syndicate. Plunkett-Powell really tracked down the many Carolyn Keenes, in true "sleuth style." Anyone who ever stayed up late reading their Nancy Drews with a flashlight under the covers will absolutely love this book.
Book Description
Most ancient cultures used gourds in every aspect of life. Decorating gourds is everybody's favorite craft, as you'll see from the more than two-dozen varied projects shown here. A handy guide tells you where to find or buy gourds, and how to prepare them. Then use your easily-learned skills with leather-dye, egg-dye, spray and acrylic paint, wax shoe polish, découpage, airbrush, waxed linen, dyed raffia, and beads. Select your projects: storage containers for food, medicine, herbs, seeds, oils, jewelry, and even sacred objects. Turn dipper gourds into ladles, bowls, and cooking utensils, or create musical instruments such as thumb pianos, harps, banjos, drums, and rattles, as well as a variety of masks, earrings and necklaces, piggy banks, bird feeders, birdhouses, toys, candleholders, and luminaries.

THIS WORK IS JUST WHAT THE TITLE STATES IT IS.......2006-08-06
Excellent work and publicaiton here! This is one of the first works I have encoundered that is truely for the beginning gourd worker. It is wonderfully illustrated and the text is very, very workable. The author gives step by step instructions, all illustrated of dozens upon dozens of projects and ideas for others. The author gives a good overview of the basics, types of gourds, preparation of the gourd for work, different techniques and different materials that can be used. I most certainly agree with another reviewer here, in that this work probably would not be the ideal one to use for smaller children our large groups. On the other hand, it is just crammed with great ideas. I have been working (mostly carving) gourds for quite a number of years now and have many books on the subject. This book pretty well illustrated the untruth of the old saying "you can't teach a old dog new trick." Recommend this work highly. You probably will want to purchas this one as it is a good reference to fall back on.
Beautiful and useful..............2005-09-24
GOURD CRAFTS FOR THE FIRST TIME. At last, a book that meets my expectations. Marilyn Host starts with the assumption you have already grown your gourds, or purchased them from a nearby market and are ready to work with them. She covers everything from identifying the individual gourds by type to selecting the general materials you will need for your projects, such as soap, bleach, scouring pads, knives, spoons, glue sticks, scissors, sandpaper, pencils, rags, saws, drills, brushes, paints and dyes, sponges, and twine as well sealing agents. She then describes the steps for preparing the gourd by cleaning the surface and interior, and carving the gourd while it is pliable. Assembly of a specific item may involve combining forms, puncturing and/or extracting sections of the surface, as well as painting and/or decoupage. Using photos and well written text, Goldman describes in great detail the construction of a number of gourd products ranging from containers to decorative pieces.
While this little book is very thorough, the projects are relatively complex and mostly for adults. I personally would use this book with older girls, but not younger children (especially most little boys) unless you are working one on one with a responsible child. If you plan to use gourds for a group craft project, be prepared to do the prep work involving knives and drills yourself. You can then let the kids apply paints, dyes, and glue to their heart's content. There are some nifty ideas for masks, bird houses and luminaries but all require puncturing and cutting. This is an excellent craft book.

BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2006-08-12
Amazing book!!! Best 3d Instructional book I have ever bought for ANY 3d program. I would even venture to say that it's the best graphic Design book if it weren't for the WOW! series of books and "Real world Illustrator."
KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS BOOK ONLY FOCUSES ON MODELING! But it does a great job explaining the complex in a simple way.
Bottom Line: GET THIS BOOK!!!!
fun modeling book.......2006-01-17
I had both of the authors books for an online class.
This book was a lot of fun, even though Maya itself is a bit much to take on with 4 other classes. The tutorials allow you to be creative, but still follow directions.
I really liked the information from Loomis - and got introduced to a whole new topic. I found several of his books on line, and they have helped me with composition. The authors introduce you to a couple cool new resources like that.
I wrote the authors for some advise, and they actually wrote me back :)
Excellent resource for teachers.......2005-09-20
I teach in a tech program at a community college. Recently, due to the loss of an adjunct, I had to take over the 3D course. I have experience with 3D Studio Max, but very little with Maya. This book has been wonderful. It is structured in a way that is very simple to build a class around. The skills are sequential, but get students creating interesting objects very quickly, so that they remain engaged. The teaching tools, available separately, include a course schedule, and Powerpoint slides to introduce the basic skills of each chapter. This has allowed me to walk in and teach a program that would have been very difficult otherwise.
Tutorials are great, but the book itself fell apart........2005-09-18
The tutorials are really good, complex and thorough and the book does its' job of teaching you a lot about the tools in the program and how to make them do what you want them to. However, I had the book for a few days and pages began falling out of it. Not one or two but a lot. I never had a book do this before. The second complaint is that there seems to be a step left out of the tutorials here and there. I went crazy trying to figure out the brief introductory part about projecting a curve onto a surface to 'cut out' a shape; turns out it was because the instructions were incomplete.
The tutorials themselves are otherwise great and I still recommend this book despite these annoying flaws.
had this text for class.......2005-01-21
took a CC class on Maya and used this book. i got a lot out of it. usually i work with 3d max. now i feel confident in maya. really good chapter on shading networks.

Book Description
A founding father of British filmmaking, Victor Saville created such classics as I Was a Spy, Evergreen, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, The Mortal Storm, A Woman’s Face, and Green Dolphin Street. Completed by Saville’s collaborator, Hollywood biographer Roy Moseley, in the years following Saville’s death in 1979, Evergreen: Victor Saville in His Own Words presents the esteemed filmmaker’s memories of the development of the film industry in England and the United States, from the silent screen to “talkies,” from black-and-white to Technicolor, from the golden age of Hollywood to the rise of television.
Born in Birmingham in 1897, Saville started small in the film business after being discharged from his unit in World War I following an injury. Working first for a distribution company, Saville was exposed to the earliest British silent films as well as imported “blockbusters” such as The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance by D. W. Griffith. In 1922 he ventured to Hollywood to persuade silent film star Betty Compson to star in his first film, Woman to Woman, ultimately made with the assistance of Alfred Hitchcock in his first film job as assistant art director. Perhaps Saville’s most winning partnership was with Jessie Matthews, whom he directed in The Good Companions, Evergreen, First a Girl, and Friday the Thirteenth. He came to Hollywood permanently in 1941 when Louis B. Mayer invited him to work for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, whereupon Saville broke MGM’s questionable ties with Berlin, at a shocking time, by making The Mortal Storm. His memoir provides an intimate and detailed look at Saville’s long relationships with studio moguls Mayer and Alexander Korda and his work with an impressive list of film stars, including Robert Donat, Greer Garson, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Hedy Lamarr, Margaret Sullavan, Ingrid Bergman, Jeanette MacDonald, Lana Turner, Deborah Kerr, Elizabeth Taylor, Errol Flynn, and Paul Newman. Saville’s circle of personal friends in Hollywood, where he lived with his wife, Phoebe, from 1941 to 1955, included the Marx brothers, Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, and George Burns.
With Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Balcon, and Herbert Wilcox, Saville was a cornerstone of the early British film industry. Owing to Roy Moseley’s expert crafting, Evergreen: Victor Saville in His Own Words takes the reader behind the scenes of film’s golden age to reveal the tensions and power plays involved in studio filmmaking and struggles with stars, studios, and, many times, film censors, as well as the intricacies of early production, direction, and distribution methods.
