Book Description
A contemporary retelling of Freud's infamous "Dora" case study, following a loosely parallel plot and containing similarly controverisal sexual themes and layers of possibilities. Kirby is a young woman attempting to come to terms with a failed bout of therapy while concurrently trying to decipher the truth about the life of her identical twin, Kendra. Two years after Kendra's mysterious disappearance, Kirby has only the journals Kendra left behind by which to examine her sister's--and her own--past. But when she is sent a skewed case study of herself by her former psychiatrist, she decides to respond by using Kendra's journals to reconstruct her final months with her sister and her brief time in therapy, finally creating her own version of the truth.

Not sure..........2007-03-22
I'm about 100 pages in and I can't decide whether to keep reading or not. I was really expecting to be totally enthralled with this book as a result of the description and the reviews but so far, I can't get connected to the story or the characters. I find the concept of the book fascinating but ultimately, I don't find the characters engaging and in some ways it all seems superficial or contrived to me. At the same time, I keep believing that if I stick it out a little longer, I will find it more compelling and that I might miss out on a good book if I give up. My philosophy has always been that I would rather walk away from a book I'm not enjoying or gaining anything from in favor of others that I would find more satisfying. With this one, I'm very torn. I think I may ultimately move on to something else. That being said, if the description interests you, I would recommend giving it a chance; maybe it will speak to you more than it has to me.
Excellent, highly charged story.......2006-11-05
This is one of the few books in recent memory that has continued to linger in my mind. It's on my Reread Soon list. Frangello's characters are all rendered warmly, with depth, and sympathy, no matter how cold, scheming, or hypocritical they might be. I found myself caring for each and every one of them, warts and all. The story of one twin's attempt to understand and tell her sister's life plunges us into a zig-zagging attempt at revealing truth. As each facet her sister's and family's life is revealed (drink, drugs, AIDS, S&M, recovered memories, and lies, lies, lies), you gain a broader, deeper picture, but one that is ultimately as murky as real life often is. Despite what some might consider sensationalistic subject matter, it is not presented as titillation. One of the best books I've read in recent years.
A Psycho Sexual Tour of Two Troubled Female Lives.......2006-06-28
This book will grab you quickly and take you into an ultra real world of two beautiful and intelligent female twins who are both struggling with their lives and especially their relationships with men. It is told through the eyes of one of the twins who is in therapy to help her cure an ongoing irritable bowel problem and also through a clever approach where she superimposes interpretations and understanding of her twin sister through reading her journals after she has left and then telling her story in her own voice. But the thing that keeps you spellbound and interested like a voyeur is the very real sexual and sometimes self destructive behavior each of the girls exhibit while they search for love and happiness, at the same time doing things that are way out there on the kinkiness scale. And yet, by the time the book is over, amazingly, we love them both and understand them both and feel nothing but compassion and hope.
There are other excellent characterizations, the well meaning and alcoholic father, the stern and icey cold mother, the therapist and three very different boyfriends who are trying to understand and help the girls through their dysfunctional lives, yearning for love and sex.
The writing is mature, full of metaphors which help us follow the girls' journies through madness and to a lesser extent, redemption. This book is no frilly, happy little romance novel. It is just the opposite, an almost brutal look into real life and understanding of the psychology of dysfunctional, yet normal, human relationships. The genius of the author is her ability to delve into these abnormal yet very interesting sexual and emotional needs of people through the Freudian approach. I loved the book and feel enhanced.
I hope there is a follow-up book.
Gina Frangello is here to stay!.......2006-06-20
This book is completely amazing. I haven't read a book this good in over a year or more. Honestly, you won't be able to put the book down. Not only does Frangello address a wide range of issues from AIDS, sexual abuse, anorexia, sibling rivalry and relationships in general, she has a unique way of crafting this very real, very disturbing web of family and dysfunctionality into something that matters. I could not put this book down. The story mirrors Freud's case story of Dora, which in my opinion is pretty deep, disturbing stuff to begin with but Frangello then took that blue print and created one of the most moving and depressing stories while keeping hope and redemption alive in this novel. I'm truly astounded at the quality of writing, the research that had to have gone into this novel and really for Chiasmus Press for publishing this great work. And my fellow Bookslut co-hort has nailed it when she said she found herself holding her breath through a would-be sex scene. There are several moments in the book where you find your self caught up in this anticipatory frenzy--all of which lends to the "can't-put-it-down" factor. Please read this book. You'll be thinking about it for days after you've finished.
The Sisters Karamazov.......2006-02-10
What a story! As if the author brought all the Karamazovs back to life in modern Chicago, condensed them into twin sisters, put gags over their mouths, and made them try to articulate the motives and passions of the demons that possessed them. Dora would be pleased. Sigmund would be pleased. Schroedinger would be pleased. I am overwhelmed.
The characters are vivid and real, their language flows like blood and burns like Scotch on their wounds, self-inflicted and otherwise. Written and edited to perfection. I couldn't put it down. There is awe associated with the novel. Frangello has created characters and atmosphere and story of such acuity and intelligence and intensity that it is impossible to over-praise.

One good story, Two not so good.......2007-02-04
I enjoyed Erin McCarthy's story, The Lady of the Lake. Shy school teacher Violet sees herself as undesirable. She wants to get pregnant and raise a child alone. Famous baseball star is looking for something more in his life. Their meeting and subsequent actions are fun to watch. Lori Foster's story was readable but not recommended. The guy meets her, likes her, realizes he loves her. Nothing new or interesting for me. The third story's plot and action were a little weird and concerned a sex toy room. I couldn't get into the characters very well. Readable but not recommended.
Another Hoot!!!.......2006-05-24
Yes! It's another Bad Boy anthology which once again offers the reader a fun sexy romp in three short stories by some of today's hottest romance authors.
In Lori Foster's "Playing Doctor" Dr. Axle Dean is shocked and surprised when he spots sexy Libby Preston at a party. Not exchanging names they enjoy a sizzling kiss and a little more in the garden. When he finds out Libby's secret...he hightails it out of there...only to be haunted by the memory of the time they shared. Imagine his surprise when he walks into his treatment room and finds her sitting there. Life has just gotten a little more complicated. Will these two find a happy ending?
In Erin McCarthy's "The Lady of the Lake" Kindergarten teacher Violet Caruthers thinks she's found the perfect man to be the father of the baby she's always wanted. Well, this is until she falls off of his boat...while dressed in a bikini, and left behind. Things look like they are only going to get worse...until she is rescued by baseball hottie Dylan Diaz. These two people are about to find out that things are not always as they appear and there is fun in finding red hot attraction where you least expect to find it.
In HelenKay Dimon's "Hardhats and Silk Stockings" Whit Thomas has the unfortunate luck of tangling with Hannah Bridges...one of the most frustrating women ever created. Too bad he also suffers from a twisted burning attraction for her. Imagine his surprise when opportunity hands Hannah over to him for one night of no hold bar pleasure. Will they walk away from what they find...or will they grab and hold it with both hands?
All three stories are sexy fun reads with entertaining characters. This is a perfect "vacation" read that offers some really "Bad Boys" who finally meet their match! Falling in love should be so much fun!
Love those Bad Boys!.......2006-04-09
Playing Doctor: Axel Dean is a sexy physician devoted to staying single and enjoying the company of as many women as he can. He's happy that his brother Booker and his best friend Cary have found love, but he wants no part of it. But what he does want is a night or two with the lovely and delectable young woman who catches his eye at a formal affair he attends. Going down the path of temptation, Axel can't remember the last time he wanted this much, and she seems to feel the same way. Overcome with lust, Axel is ensnared in her sensual web until he learns of her innocence. Stubbornly refusing to break his own rules, he regretfully walks away....only to meet up with the lovely Libby Preston again in an unexpected manner. This time turning her down is no longer an option, and Axel realizes that some rules are made to be broken, especially when they lead to love.
Lori Foster creates some of the sexiest alpha males around. They may be determined to live footloose and fancy-free, but once they fall in love, no woman can resist all that intense concentration and incredible passion. She also writes about some of the most innocent yet responsible heroines, and I love the complete honesty in her characters. One gets the sense that these are traits that Lori values very highly, and she captures those qualities so well. Her stories are about honorable people who make mistakes but who don't back down from their responsibilities or from their families. A very traditional outlook that Lori manages to keep fresh and entertaining. She is an auto-buy author for me.
Lady In the Lake: Shy school teacher Violet Caruthers is so forgettable that when she falls off her soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend's boat into the lake, he doesn't even realize she's gone. Thankfully she's soon rescued by sexy baseball player Dylan Diaz, who is instantly captivated by this shy, honest and sexy woman. All he can think about is how much he wants to take her to bed, but Violet is not like one of his groupies, thank God, and getting her there is going to take more than a persuasive smile. Fortunately for him, he has something she wants, and soon they both see stars. Dylan realizes he's found what's been missing in his fast-paced glamorous life, and Violet realizes that she's not so forgettable after all, at least not by the man who loves her.
Oh my gosh, I completely fell in love with Dylan. Sweet and sexy and oh, so wicked, he is the perfect match for reserved, maternal Violet. Erin McCarthy writes such funny, sexy stories, and she also has her own strong voice and style that is her trademark. She is one of my all-time favorite authors - it is amazing and wonderful how she keeps outdoing herself in her writing. Her humor is honest, and she says what other people only think about - this makes it extremely easy to relate to her characters right from the start. If you have not read a story by Erin McCarthy, well, what are you waiting for???
Hardhats and Silk Stockings: Contractor Hannah Bridges is bound and determined to prove herself to her family and step away from the blue-collar stigma she grew up with. She doesn't have time for the irresistible yet exasperating Whit Thomas in her life. But Whit has other plans, and they all have to do with Hannah. He's very attracted to her, and deep down knows she feels the same way but she can't let go. He decides to help her out with that by giving her a night of passion, no strings, no regrets. Things are going really well until Hannah catches on to him. Now Whit has to prove to her that their night of pleasure was not just a notch on his bedpost, but just the beginning of something really wonderful.
This is HelenKay Dimon's first story, and it was rather enjoyable. I did have a problem with all the interruptions the couple had to deal with - jarred me out of the story and made me groan in frustration because I didn't feel that it added to the scene, at least not every single time it occurred. Instead it led to too many misunderstandings. I felt the characters were not given enough time together to really work on their relationship, and that bothered me. HelenKay had a great concept and I enjoyed her writing, just not how some of the scenes were handled. I do think she has a lot of potential to tell some really amazing stories, so I will definitely give her stories another chance.
Another excellent anthology.......2006-04-08
When Good Things Happen To Bad Boys has three sizzling, sexy and hilarious stories.
Playing Doctor by Lori Foster has nursing student Libby Preston catching the eyes of sexy doctor Axel Dean. Their first meeting has sparks flying between them but Axel panics when he realizes Libby's inexperience. Libby and Axel's next meeting will have you laughing your head off. It's priceless. Libby though young has had to grow up fast and is delightful match for Axel. Watching Axel realizes this woman is it for him is a treat. This romance is witty, spicy and deliciously hot.
Erin McCarthy's Lady Of The Lake has poor heroine Violet Caruthers being dumped accidentally into a lake and her boyfriend not noticing she is gone. Dylan Diaz rescues her and can't believe that any man would not miss this gorgeous woman. As they get to know each other, Dylan agrees to help Violet conceive a child. What starts out as a one-time deal ends up being the real deal. Dylan and Violet's story is laugh out loud funny as well as sizzling sexy.
Hardhats and Silk Stockings is a stunning debut by HelenKay Dimon. Hannah Bridges has a major chip on her shoulder, she has had to prove herself every day of her life. Contractor Hannah isn't going to let wickedly handsome Whit Thomas the architect distract her. But Whit has a plan to get underneath Hannah's skin to the real woman she hides from everyone. Their chemistry is explosive and delightful. This is an enchanting, fast paced, tantalizing story.
When Good Things Happen To Bad Boys has three exceptional stories. It's the complete package, funny, sexy and brazen. Gotta love those bad boys.
fun Bad Boys anthology .......2006-03-30
"Playing Doctor" by Lori Foster. Dr. Axel Dean likes self-assured, sensual, and sexy women in his bed. Though the kisses of his peer Dr. Libby Preston rush blood to his lower head, he prefers experience while she is a trainee who has chosen Axel to deflower her. He wants to just say no, but Libby makes offers that even a bad boy can't refuse.
"The Lady of the Lake" by Erin McCarthy. Pro baseball player Dylan Diaz rescues a woman from drowning in a lake, bringing her onto his boat. However, instead of insuring she is okay, he feels an overwhelming almost obsessive need to make love to kindergarten teacher Violet Caruthers. Even when she makes him laugh, which is often, his desire for her grows. She, on the other hand uses her role as a prim and proper teacher to disguise the fact that she may just give in to her attraction to her rescuer.
"Hardhats and Silk Stockings" by HelenKay Dimon. Architect Whit Thomas wonders if God is punishing him by making him a modern day Job. He wants to make love to contractor Hannah Bridges, but she rejects his advances as she spends her time proving she is as good as the boys. Whit knows he must discuss the project with Hannah, but he can only think of making passionate love with her even if it means using the blueprints as a mat.
The latest Bad Boys anthology contains three delightful fun tales. In each case, the male is frustrated by his desires for a woman who seems virginal, yet sexy and sensual. Fans of the series will enjoy these women enticing their hunks.

Not what you expected, eh?.......2003-11-12
Before I get on to my review, let me comment on someone else's. There IS a whole chapter talking solely about the Succubus Club, you know. And if you read that whole chapter, it tells how he kept it around without Kine finding out. Anyway...
From the first sight of this book, you know that you're in for quite a treat. The artwork on the cover - a painting - is exquisite, as most of White Wolf's artwork is. Even the way the title of the book is written lets you know it's gonna be good. Moving right along, then... This book goes into great detail on every type of party (used liberally in the book) you want in your story, from the Toreador's Ball to the Sabbat pack's Vaulderie. Unlike some people, I still think that it was wise to go into such detail. There are storytellers who would be happy to use any of the information found in the book, but there's always that Golden Rule. Have fun. If you don't like everything they've given you here, change some things. This book inspired ideas in my head about the social life of Kindred that I've not thought of before. It's a great read if you are interested in the social life of Kindred and Cainite alike and I suppose, if you're looking at this review, you are.
Not what I was hoping for.......2003-07-22
Sometimes WW puts out books that are too detailed or two vague or too broad. "The Succubus Club" is a bit of all three. You see, there is supposed to be a "succubus club," the toughest Kindred hangout in the World of Darkness but this book isn't about that place (which is what I was expecting it to be). No, instead its about organizations, meeting places, parties, etc that Kindred can have when they wish to hang out to brag, fight, or just be social. I think there was enough information in all the other books to allow me to have a multitude of such events for my own players. This book is too detailed and frankly too limiting in that it stiffles some of the creativity that can make the game truly scary for players. At the same time, it is vague on certain principles such as how do you hid the place from mortals or enemies. And finally I was deeply disappointed that the focus isn't on the Succubus Club itself. I mean, really, I have the CD for it; where is the description of the place?

Developing Leadership is Crucial for Your Church.......2007-01-04
How are you going to find the manpower necessary to lead your church in outreach, evangelism, fellowship and worship? Rather than the traditional approach of a Nominating Committee who "strong arms" people into volunteering, a better approach is to help people identify their spiritual gifts, review their spiritual profile and seek a group of peers guidance on how to implement their ministry. This book and the leadership guide is an excellent resource to use. We have had two cycles in our church and are well on the way to a new era of church growth and better impact on our community.
Book Description
Network is a dynamic program to help Christians understand who God has uniquely made them to be, and mobilize them to a place of meaningful service in the local church. It is designed for group presentation in several different formats.

Network.......2005-10-04
The book was used for a class in spiritual gifts. This is the 2nd class that I've taken and if I didn't know what the gifts were and how they are used, I would not have received the information from the book. Not for new believers.
Grow Disciples.......2000-05-17
Network is an amazing system and assessment tool that assists Christians in discovering and applying their spiritual gifts and talents to building God's Kingdom. These materials are definietly the means of growing transformed disciples who will transform the world through dedicated and enthusiastic service in God's Kingdom. This tool provides a three step process: 1) Discovery of an individual's Servant Profile which includes, spiritual gifts, Passion/area of minstry and personal work style, 2) Consultation and 3) Ministry placement. This system provides training modules for Teachers and Consultants and helps a church to define its minitry opportunitues for those looking to become more involved. The Leader's guide provides easy to follow teaching plans and the consultant guide gives the ins and outs of consultations with example phrases and detailed outlines. It provides a complete means of helping an individual understand his or her calling in God's Kingdom!
A practical guide for affirming personal ministry.......2000-04-05
This is a great guide for the seeker or believer who has a heart to serve and needs a process to explore their personal uniqueness. The servant profile of passion, spiritual gifts and personality is a simple yet effective framework for facilitating a person to find pertinent ministry outlets. Having experienced the process personally, I found the design and flow of the course to be especially good, from the video vignettes to the huddle groups to the gift affirmation process, in which you have others help give perspective to your gifts. I also found the immplementation and leadership materials to be quite helpful in proposing and putting to work a gift-based ministry design in the local church. The only downside to the Network gift-based approach MIGHT be the "modernist" flavor that permeates the material. If you identify more with "postmodern" perspectives you might find Rick Warren's SHAPE process a bit more resonating. Overall though, a very good book that has had a signifigant impact in how churches are designing ministries and placing volunteers for service....I heartily recommend it.
Discover this NOW.......2000-01-16
I just completed the class this book accompanies. This was a milestone event for my wife and me. Both of us were saying "No wonder I'm like this and you're like that." I would recommend this for you not only to find your place in church (which it can help you with), but also to find your place in life. This book can focus you in on your Passion (where you should be), your Gifts (what you should be doing) and your Personal Style (how you will be doing it). This book will shine a light on you. Stop fighting your innate makeup and tendencies. And figure out just exactly what you are and how God made you.
Greatest Personal Spiritual Growth tool I've ever seen!.......1999-09-22
We've been using Network at our church for about 4 months and the comments from people regarding their personal growth as well as the dramatic difference evident in lives is nothing short of amazing. As a teacher, I found the materials easy to use and needed only minimal time to prepare. This guide is clear-cut and straight forward as I've been training additional teachers, their comments have been very possitive as well. Not simply a Spiritual Gifts assessment, Network goes the distance and assists people in discovering how and where to use their gifts AND helps people understand more about how they relate to each other in the process.
CAUTION: Network is likely to bring renewal to your congregation--use only if you are willing to change!

Food So Good it'll Curl Your Toes.......2007-02-18
The other day I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.
THE REAL JERK is one of the books I kept. Okay, so Lily and Ed's book is based on the recipes they serve up in their Toronto restaurant and not on, say, the recipe for doubles you might find a vendor selling at the outdoor Port of Spain vegitable market. So maybe this is Caribbean cuisine served up nouville with a Canadian twist, that's okay, because the meals made from this book are simply to die for. For example, I'm not a big fan of mussels, but the "Mussels in Coconut Sauce on page 74 of this delightful book will simply curl your toes, they are so good. And if you've ever wanted a recipe for flying fish (I know I have), then there is the author's "Fried Flying Fish" dish on page 61, ummmm, ummmm good.
One recipe I've used quite a lot, because it's my hubby's favorite starter, is the "Crunchy Shrimp Salad" on page 41. It is so easy to do and it tastes divine. And if you follow the shrimp salad with a main course which includes the "Honey-Glazed Baby Back Ribs" on page 83, you'll have a meal which will make any man swoon and I know, because I've made hubby Dub swoon a lot.

Delicious, mon!!.......2006-11-14
The Real Jerk is my fave restaurant in Toronto. We live in Hawaii and whenever we hunger for authentic Jamaican food, we rely on this book to put together whole meals. We love that it offers advice on which recipes mix & match to make the ultimate meal, plus everything is super easy to cook. The ingredients are easy to shop for and don't have you hunting down obscure ingredients. You can pick up everything at the local supermarket. We've been to Jamaica and these recipes are as authentic as it gets. Definitely buy this book!
Sauces, salsas, dips, dressings, and more.......2003-01-05
Lily and Ed Pottinger own and operate The Real Jerk, a premier Caribbean restaurant in Toronto, Canada. In The Real Jerk: New Caribbean Cuisine, the Pottinger's draw from their more than eighteen years of experience to compiled list of helpful cooking tips, as well as recipes from sauces, salsas, dips, and dressings. Then they go on to showcase outstanding recipes for fish and seafood, meat and poultry, side dishes, breads and snacks, drinks and desserts. Of special interest is a section devoted to Menu Ideas. From Cool & Creamy Carrot Salad; Mashed Coco & Codfish; Jamaican Pot Roast; and Stewed Cow's Foot; to Sweet Potato Balls; Baked Bananas; Easter Spice Buns; Coconut Pudding Surprise; and Ginger Beer, The Real Jerk: New Caribbean Cuisine is a welcome and highly recommended addition to multi-cultural and ethnic cookbook collections.
The Real Thing!.......2002-10-29
The Jerk phenomenon in Toronto started at this sunny little place on the corners of Broadview Avenue and Queen Street East. True to the original recipes all these years later, Ed & Lily Pottinger create the best darn jerk around! The cookbook really shines in its inspiration for home cooks. Simple and quick, sizzling and fiesty!

Identifying American Brilliant Cut Glass- Revised 5th Edition.......2006-03-22
This is a must-have book for ABP cut glass collectors. This revision corrects many errors, mis-identifications from the earlier versions. It has exactly the same photos as the previous versions but the print IDs and captions seem to incorporate most of the corrections listed earlier by ACGA and glass researchers in other publications.
Invaluable reference information.......2005-09-06
Bill and Louise Boggess provide the revised 5th edition of Identifying American Brilliant Cut Glass, updating prices and adding even more photos to this glass history and reference. Take it to auctions and antique shops, or along to garage sales, but also read it for leisure: tips include how to analyze a pattern and match it to a catalog or book picture. Invaluable reference information.
This book needs an index........1999-10-28
I believe this book would be easier to use and more accessible to a reader if it had an index. It does have some good points, but it is not the definitive work on American cut glass.

French Country decorating.......2007-08-22
The book was very informative. It gave me many ideas on how to include my furnishings with a French feel.
A real gem.......2007-05-21
I can see this book is going to sit on the top of the coffee table book pile for a long time to come. Aside from the fabulous photos of French Provincial homes, Dannenberg delicately picks apart the details that make a typical Provincial home and garden. It does the job so much better than we sitting in another continent can grasp from a few photos in a book. It teaches us how to copy this style and really appreciate the quality of each piece of furniture, artwork or chattel we acquire for own little pretend patch of France.
I love this book!

Really a wonderful book - both beautiful to look at and informative. Very interesting reading, as well as artistically lovely with wonderful, colorful photography. I am not a decorator or designer by trade, but go to this type of book for creative inspiration, and this one was a winner.
VERY INFORMATIVE.......2007-02-26
Wonderful book on French Country Style. This book is packed with lots of vivid photos but what sets this book apart from all the other styling books is the wealth of information that the author shares with the reader. It is truly a must for any Provencal styling fan.
love it.......2007-02-12
If you want detailed descriptions of French design elements, including their history, this is the book for you. If you just want room pictures, this may not work for you, as it is text-heavy. I just love it.
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated volume brings the essence of Provence to home decor. Nothing about a true provencal house is accidental. The stone for the walls is faded by centuries of sun, the fabrics for table or bed come from local designers working in a centuries old tradition, the pottery and glasses to eat and drink from are the product of local craftsmen. This celebrated way of life is a result of the work of hundreds of artisans who still produce the elements of a home in the traditional ways. Indoors and out, readers will find here the elements to bring the style of the south of France into their own homes, from furniture to textiles and fabrics, and from faience pottery to beautiful metalwork. Also covered are architectural elements including stairways, railings, floors, moldings, fireplaces, chimneys, roofs and ceilings. And for the outdoors-gardens, walls and patios. Combining history with details of the methods of craftsmen, and inspirational photography with practical details Provence Style celebrates the true French country style that is perennially popular, a style that is at once rustic and sophisticated, and both traditional and elegant. Not all provencal houses are alike of course, and this book goes into detail about the best way to decorate a range of houses from grand villas to country houses, and from small cottages to houses in town. Each section of the book shows a variety of authentic approaches to different house types which can be applied here to bring the charm of a sun drenched provencal room to any house.

A cultural and aesthetic trip to Provence.......2007-01-03
Provence Style is a beautiful book. Reading this book is like traveling through the Provence country. It describes the types of Provence houses with the illustration of beautiful pictures. You will feel the ambiance of the outdoors as well as the cozy aspects of the indoors. You will almost smell the lavender fields from the terrace pictures! And your visit will show you incredible flooring, original fireplaces, delicate furniture and other traditional elements of the Provence style.
Our preference is biased toward the ceramics, especially the Moustiers ones, and the fabrics. Provence fabrics are so colorful and playful! Also, the Boutis, a white quilting method is presented here with a picture of its transparency through light.
Important for color.......2004-08-07
So many Provence house books show plenty of details, but this book's strength is the profusion of color throughout. We took it with us to the tile store and could easily see by opening any page what tones, hues are truly Provencal and would work in our new house.
Beautiful.......2002-06-01
A beautiful book, full of concise details and suggestions for decorating your home to evoke Provence.

Book Description
People all over the world are fascinated by Provence. It is the untamed Roman Provincia, stretching from the crags of Vaucluse and undulating fields of lavender to fishing villages on the Mediterranean. From the whitewashed buildings of the Camargue to the mighty castles of the troubadour trail, Provence is an authentic mirror of the Mediterranean spirit and joie de vivre. This study is the first to illustrate so many different Provençal interiors. They range from the private apartments of a duchess to a beekeeper's home, from an art collector's stud farm to the brightly-painted weekend retreat of a sculptor, from a jolly gypsy wagon to a monastery renovated in minimalist style. Prominent personalities such as Christine Picasso and Ewa Truffaut and the artist Arman opened their doors to make possible a book which provides an unmatched, intimate view of Provence, revealing a world behind otherwise closed doors.

The Real Provence (of the rich).......2000-12-07
This book is a gorgeously photographed journey into the homes of wealthy and/or very stylish residents of Provence. Not a book of typical 'French Country Interiors', it covers a wide range of styles from super modern to 17th century grandeur, from 'to the manor born', to gypsy caravans (stunning). As with all things French I adore the way they so gracefully combine the old and the new. These are for the most part not homes that were 'designed', but instead homes that 'grew' with thier owners over time. This book is one of a series of books by this publisher/editor team and they are all wonderful. I have this one, the book on Indian Interiors, the book on Moroccan Interiors (my favorite) and the one on Tuscan Interiors. Each of these books is pure quality. The photography, the variety of well chosen homes, the layout and design of the books, including paper quality, binding etc. is superb. There isn't one aspect of any of these books, including this one, that is run-of-the-mill or poorly conceived. If you are interested in Provencial style, creative interiors, use of colour and texture, and French Culture, you will adore this book. It is without a doubt the best book on French Interiors that I have found.
My favorite design book! I love Provence!.......2000-07-20
I have never been there, but through samplings such as this treasure of a book, I have seen on print what I most want to see: Provence! This "gift" presents the reader with the best views of interiors that I am aware of. I have combed my library and bookstores for views of Provence for almost forever. This book almost makes me cry, I long to see it so! Until I do, this sumptuous look at this magical region is availble in this outstanding book. I am SO glad I have my copy!
A beautifully designed, richly photographed table topper!........1999-10-29
In this rich photographic essay of interiors in Provence, Lovatt-Smith captures the design, style, essence, texture, life and breath of this magical location and its occupant's beautiful interiors.

Book Description
"Edward Fella, a former commercial artist, creates posters that break every known rule of typographic convention and designer good taste," says Rick Poynor. Ellen Lupton has written, "In Fella's work, the unfettered mind of a Dada/Fluxus hippie confronts the dextrous hand of a traditional commercial artist." Bruce Mau calls him "brilliant." Peter Hall says Ed Fella is "an agitator, an experimentalist, an educator, and an inspiration to a new generation of type designers" and says his "anti-slick, rule-breaking designs" are "eccentric to the point of being impossible to imitate." Clearly everyone agrees that Ed Fella is one of the most daring and extreme graphic designers in America today. Famous for his obsessive hand-drawn alphabets and glyphs, Fella creates work with the power and spontaneity of raw art that nonetheless is born from a great knowledge of the theory and technique of typography and graphics. As Rick Poynor says, "Fella doesn't so much take his line for a walk as force-feed it hallucinogens and release it babbling on to the page." This first book on Fella, designed by Lorraine Wild, contains numerous examples of the designer's work, including his radical typeface designs, which have been described as "spun, tilted, stretched, sliced, fractured, drawn as if with a broken nib, and set loose among fields of ink-blotter doodles and networks of rules." This title also features Fella's collection of Polaroid snapshots of the signs and symbols he sees on the streets. These photos, taken over a period of many years, serve as a record of vernacular architecture around the world as well as inspiration for Fella's own designs. The result is a book which will appeal to all designers and art directors, whether their love is photography or fonts, art direction or art.

Not Enough Letters, Too Many Pictures.......2003-07-25
This book is mainly a photography book. There are pages after pages of lettering of "vernacular" typography. Interspersed are a few pages of hand-drawn lettering by the author. We're talking about 8-10 pages total of typography by Ed Fella himself. I would have preferred to see more of the author's own work with fewer photographic references.
One man's primer of public publishing.......2003-03-24
Edward Fella's book of 1134 Polaroid shots of vernacular signs gives a flavor of what can be seen in most US public places, these are the roadside typographic shouts of local commerce. Because the business of America is business signs are everywhere, usually colorful and just asking to be captured by any passing photographer. To avoid looking like other photo books of public lettering and signage the author deliberately goes for a tight shot and most of the photos only show letter parts but as Lewis Blackwell says in his introduction, Fella is not interested in what the letters say.
With the tight photo cropping and a dull layout (all the photo pages are the same: nine, three by three inch Polaroid's, including their white border, butted up to each other, no captions or page numbers) I think this ends up as a very boring looking but nevertheless intensely personal book of public typography. The best images are the ones that have been produced by sign makers, or are obviously commercially printed. Vernacular signs, where someone has painted or scrawled some letters, are mostly produced by amateurs, who given the choice (and money) would much prefer to have something that looked professional, where any repeat letters look identical, have even spacing and all sit on the same base line. Vernacular neon signs do not exist because they can only be made by professionals.
Between the photos there are twelve sections showing the author's own creative typography, loosely based on the vernacular letters he has photographed and consequently showing the same amateurish feel and more critically in my view, a high degree of un-readability. This individuality to type is also reflected in the books production. The few text pages with two columns per page appear to have been pasted up so that paragraphs do not line up, the imprint page and the cover flaps have type that is deliberately unaligned This silly messing about with the text stops short of doing anything to the back cover barcode though, commerce wins in the end!
ýThe Book I wish I'd Doneý.......2001-08-29
If I hadn't been so lazy, or thought this had been done already, or thought maybe no one would care to publish this, then I might have done this book myself a few years ago. I wanted to do something similiar but didnt.
However, I don't think I would have done as good a job as Ed did here. This is NOT a bunch of random snaps. The continuity of the medium and the cropping are what makes this a discplined, artful and well-done study. Nice work , Ed!
(So-follow your dreams like Ed did)
Americal.......2000-11-05
I love books like this. I bought it after seeing some of his Polaroids in a recent issue of Dazed and Confused Magazine. He photographs and collects letters the way some do rare birds. This beautifully designed and edited book reproduces over a thousand of his snapshots as well as examples of his own uniquely personal approach to typography. It's an amazing testament to all the unseen hands that have left a mark on the American landscape.
