The book is geared for high school and college, but as a pre high school coach, I found alot of information to help at the youth level. There is alot of detail and drills that I have already used this year. If you are looking for information on various basic offensive formations and plays, you will find it here. Also, they cover basics on QB footwork and RB training. Lots of good stuff.
Tap Into the Great Minds of Football.......2003-01-13
I coach football at the high school level and got a lot out of this book. Most of the articles are pulled from AFCA Summer Manuals and Convention notes through the years. I read an article or two a day last spring and it really got me in a creative football mode. Some of the articles are dated but football is so cyclical that it's a big benefit to be contrary. Some of the old articles by Paterno, Devaney, and Fry are the msot helpful. The articles are brief so look at this as a huge tray of appetizers to get you thinking about what you really want to study in depth. Highly recommended.
Outstanding Aid For Intermediate Coaches.......2002-12-01
AFCA and Human Kinetics have produced a gem of a book which will be of most help to intermediate coaches -- that is, those who have a few years' experience under their belts, and are looking for new ideas in offensive systems, or for new plays to run from within their favorite offensive system.
While the age of some of the articles may seem troubling, it can in fact be a real advantage. Football offenses are so subject to trends and cycles that anything which is not current can be successful because it comes as a surprise. A defensive analogy would be the 5-2 defense -- "America's defense" throughout the 70's and much of the 80's, but almost unknown in some regions today, and thus a valuable surprise weapon.
The same holds true on offense, and the riches this book displays are a real treasure trove -- the triple option (from the wishbone, I formation and split-back veer); the Wing-T; and various pass-oriented spread and one-back systems are all covered by some of the most prominent names in coaching from the last three decades.
This isn't the best place to start for beginning coaches, nor the modern state of the art for cutting-edge types, but for the rest of us it is an excellent place to begin the next stage of our never-ending quest for football knowledge.
Strategic is right.......2001-06-02
I've read quite a few books on the game of football. Not being a coach, I don't think most people would want to pick this up, but for those who love the game itself will find this an indispensible reference. The book is composed of short articles by college coaches which deal with one small apspect of offence or a certain type of attack at a time. Although the college game is much simpler than the NFL, the insights I've picked up by reading this book have completely changed the way I watch football, be it college, CFL, or NFL. When I move to a different location where I can join a high school coaching team, this book will be soon find the pages being worn out. Absolutely excellent!
One of the Most Comprehensive Guides to Offensive Football.......2000-04-07
This book is one of the most comprehensive guides to offense that I have ever encountered. It includes almost 750 diagrammed plays from some of the top names in football including Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, as well as many other college and high school football coaches. This text would be a valuable addition to any coaches library. It will definitely add variety to any offense and add many new twists and schemes to any offense whether you have an option team or a passing based offense. I think it would be a very wise investment.

Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves.......2002-08-06
This is a fine little British cozy with some escapades in Germany on the side. I was drawn in by the title. I had never read this author or series before, and was pleasantly surprised and entertained. Ellie Haskell (sometime interior decorator, full time Mom, daughter of the prodigal Morley) and her husband Bentley (chef and restaurateur) are confronted and confounded with the remains of the mysterious Harriet. Or are they? This domestic duo reminds me somewhat of a Goldie's Colorado Catering (the series by Diane Mott Davidson) Goes Across "the Pond." But the Haskells are more witty and their children far better behaved.
It is a fun frolic with some Saints, sinners, relics and characters endearing and quirky.
Ellie's Hijacked Holiday.......2002-02-07
Cannell's fans will no doubt agree that Ellie needs a good vacation away from the twins and the most interesting residents of Chittendon Falls. . Understandable then is the reader's frustration, surely shared by our heroine, that yet again that her plans are hijacked by her dramatic and high maintenance family. Instead of jaunting off to a well earned rest and recreate exploring the epicuriously rich France we are delighted to have another Ellie Haskell adventure even if the poor woman must stay at home at Merlon Court.
Readers are again held hostage to Cannell's British wit as seen through her characters old and new. Delightful was the creation of new characters, annoying as they may be, and comforting was the venerable Mrs. Malloy to dazzle us with her adventures, sage advice, and forked but witty tongue.
A slow start but a dazzling finish brings the reader to a delightful and smiling close that seems to never fail to disappoint this devoted fan of the author, leaving me, and I'm sure other readers, hungry for more adventures. In agreement with some of the other reviews, I'd certainly like to see Ellie and Ben on holiday without the Kids. Someplace far from the family and relatives that often bring Ellie to her wits end, Perhaps a cruise to Australia or an African Safari, or even an adventure in the Scottish Highlands. Would it still be the same however, without the family antics that keep our heroine busy and readers in stitches?
Don't miss this witty adventure, excellently written, very amusing continuation of the misadventures Ellie Haskell, her accidental partner and husband, Ben and the usual witty characters of Chittendon Falls.
Acceptable,, but not memorable........2000-06-23
Readers of Dorothy Cannell's "The Trouble with Harriet" may be disappointed. After such wonderful stories like "The Thin Woman" and "How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams," "The Trouble With Harriet" drags with little humor and passages more suited to dramatic soliloquies. More time was spent on Ellie's father's bouts of depression and ill-humor than I thought was necessary and the premise of the mystery itself was a bit bland.
I'd really like it if one of these books were to take Ellie and Ben away from Chittendon Falls on a holiday and then shove them headlong into a mystery....but please! Let's get these two together without the kiddies and Freddie lurking about. Frankly, I'd love to read more of Ben.
Although the book was acceptable, I found myself skimming and skipping, a sure sign of boredom with a story.
It's nice to be back with Ellie and Bentley.......1999-06-09
I quite enjoyed The Trouble With Harriet.
Dorothy Cannell has given us some new characters with very unique personalities. Some are good and some so annoying you wish Ellie would box their ears. And happily there are the ones we have come to know and love like Mrs. Malloy (still in her black taffeta and heels) and Freddy.
I did not give the book five stars because I felt the pace of the first half of the book was a bit slow. At page 156 I thought "now we're getting interesting"
However, as a tried and true Dorothy Cannell fan I was not disappointed. It is a fun book to read, Ellie is her charming and lovable self, and as always, Ben is a picture perfect husband.
This book also marks the return of kleptomaniac Aunt LuLu which adds even more English humor to the already amusing book.
I would have enjoyed a faster pace but all in all it was an enjoyable read.
A winner as usual for Cannell.......1999-04-02
In Chitterden Fells, Ellie and Bentley Haskell look forward to a romantic vacation in France. However, they delay their second honeymoon when Ellie's long-lost father Morley unexpectedly (except by the Gypsy fortune teller) arrives. Accompanied by an urn containing the remains of his beloved Harriet, Morley settles into Ellie's home as if he owns it. The presence of a live Morley living with Ellie is enough to put her off tea. However, she and Bentley also must put up with kooky Aunt Lulu, who is staying for an unknown spell.
Morley plans to give the remains of Harriet to her relatives. Before they can collect her ashes, the local vicar absently takes the urn with him. Soon, another vehicle accident leads to the death of two people. The police believe Morley killed them and Harriet. Because blood is thicker than water (but less than toothpaste), Ellie tries to prove her rascally father did not kill anyone.
THE TROUBLE WITH HARRIET is a very humorous who-done-it due to the reactions of Ellie and Bentley to the lunatic universe that threatens to engulf them. The jocular story line is a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, which talented Dorothy Cannell succeeds in doing well. The characters are amusing and add to the entertainment. Anyone who relishes a comic romp of a mystery should try this novel and its predecessor, THE SPRING CLEANING MURDERS, for both are delightfully diverting novels.

A widow and earl share more than custody of a teenager........2001-07-29
A wealthy young widow and a new earl are surprised to learn that they have inherited joint custody of a high-spirited fifteen-year-old girl. Harriet and Marcus, both strong-willed, reach a tentative agreement over what is best for their ward. However, in matters of politics, they seem irreconcilable. In a story with frequent references to Jane Austen's works, Harriet is a more mature version of Emma. She believes she knows what is best for the people around her. Carried away with her mission, Harriet is sometimes blinded to her ward's wishes, and may endanger Marcus, the man Harriet has loved from childhood. Political reform in Regency England is not a new theme, but this novel does an excellent job of addressing it. The story enlightens without being didactic. The absorbing characters turn a history lesson into a delight. Although the plot relies heavily on coincidence, it is overall a clever and sweet story.
a very worthy sequel to "The Wagered Wife".......2001-06-30
Harriet Glasser was fourteen years old when she fell in love with Marcus Jeffries. However, their age difference (he was seventeen) and the Glasser family's straitened circumstances, saw to it that not much came of Harriet's love.
Years later, the shared wardship of Annabelle Richardson reunites Marcus and Harriet. Marcus, with the death of both his father and his elder brother, is now the new Earl of Wyndham; while Harriet is the widow of an immensely wealthy shipping magnate, Mr. Knightly. One would think that because they are old friends, sharing the wardship of a young girl would be an easy enterprise. However Harriet is no longer the sweet young innocent Marcus remembers. She had married a much older and very generous man, who encouraged her intellectual curiosity, and spurred her to realise her hidden potential. Now Harriet wants to do the same for Annabelle. Marcus is leery: he doesn't think that girls should have the kinds of education that boys have, but he agrees to allow Harriet full control over Annabelle curriculum. And the more time Harriet and Marcus spend with each other, the more Marcus begins to fall under Harriet's spell. She is proving to be one of the most beguiling and stimulating women he's ever met -- in spite of the fact that they disagree about everything from the education of girls to the property rights of married women. On top of it all Harriet supports the seditious writings of that liberal journalist, Gadfly! Will Harriet and Marcus be able to work out their differences of ideas and goals in order to realise their romantic feelings for each other?
"The Trouble With Harriet" is an enjoyable sequel to "The Wagered Wife." The sequence of events within this novel takes place over a year, but things unfold so swiftly and smoothly, that you don't really feel bogged down by the time line at all. Marcus, Harriet and Annabelle are very deftly and vividly portrayed. Wilma Counts really makes these three characters come alive. I was completely won over by Harriet and her impassioned pleas for reform; and while I didn't really agree with Marcus on most points, I did feel a sneaking sympathy for him, being beleagued and besieged by Harriet on practically everything! But the star of this novel was (for me anyway) Annabelle: Wilma Counts has created a really vivacious, intelligent and generous young girl in Annabelle, and Counts has also given her a very strong social conscience to boot! This bodes well for her next book which features Annabelle as the heroine, and I can hardly wait!
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Trouble For Harriet." This romance novel dealt with both serious issues (like a woman's place in society) and with romance, in an intelligent and enjoyable manner. "The Trouble With Harriet" is a really fun read, and I thoroughly recommend it, esp if you looking for a little more substance in your romance reading diet!

Very dissapointing!!! Many of the design photos are dated, and the quality of the printing is fuzzy on many pages. I must own at least 75 Interior Design books spanning 30 years and THIS is the first book I have ever returned!!! There was nothing in it to make me ever look atit again!!! A Liife In Decoration by Keith Irvine.......2006-08-31
I have been a decorator for 37 years..I have at least, 1000 books about decoration.....
This is the BEST, by far. When I took it to the Pacific Design Center for Mr. Irvine to autograph.......he saw all these little stickie things marking pages......notes,; stars, and underlining everywhere......I was afraid he would think I had defaced this book!!
Hardly......he looked up at me, and said......"Oh...You are getting so much OUT of it!!"
Indeed I am....I make sure I spend several hours a week....with my magnifying glass......on this book.

Gets outdated, yet it offers 600+ pages of a very good visual reference.......2006-07-02
"Taschen's 1000 Favorite Websites" can only be blamed to have one problem (and it's not something exclusive to it): like most other publications that showcase the best of the Web, it can (and does) get outdated eventually. Since Taschen focused on web sites that were fairly ahead of their time, even 3+ years after the book got published, it still feels fairly current, but those involved in the Web Design industry will notice the recurrence of the minimalist design trend prevailing circa 2001-2003 highlighted in its 600+ pages.
Still, at the end you are left with a pretty good visual compilation (only screenshots of 1-3 pages per web site are shown here) of the German publisher's choices for the categories of advertising, art, fashion and beauty, architecture, design, digital, movies and animation, photography and more. I am only giving it four stars because in time it may only turn into a historical document, one that will get outdated.

This book is jam packed with website home page eye-candy. Most of the screen shots are of website home pages but there are a few pages that dive a bit deeper into some sites. This book isn't about the inner workings of websites but more like a visual reference book for design layout, color combinations, type treatment and image treatment. All sites in this book have their URL posted with their screen shot so you can dive in deeper if you wish. The bonus DVD contains 6 interviews from 6 different countries each talking about different topics. It is interesting but not terribly exciting.
If you are a visual communication designer this book would be an added bonus for your reference shelf.
extensive multilingual sampling of designs.......2006-02-09
The book has a nice coverage of websites in many languages. This is one of its main virtues. For English speakers, it is sometimes easy to forget that there is a lot of web designing going on elsewhere. Because English still dominates the web, and even keeping track of the English language websites is formidable.
Wiedemann picks from many sites, and you may be able to get inspiration. But not simply by merely looking at the screen shots in the book. While pretty, they should be regarded as jumping off points, for you to delve into those sites.

I loved this book. I laughed out loud quite often at the situations and shenanigans those two boys got into. A lot of carney talk and authentic mid-way 'education'.
Work'em Strong.......2006-09-14
This is the 95% true story of author Peter Fenton's transformation from a highshcool math student to carnival flat store agent. Full of seedy and endearing characters it offers an excellent and very real look into the carnival world. The best "story" I've yet to read on the subject.
Carnival life.......2006-08-05
In Eyeing the Flash, the teenaged Peter Fenton is introduced by "Jackie Barron" to the world of the carnival. Though Fenton rose quickly through the ranks of the carnival con artists, he didn't make a career out of scamming marks; he pursued a college education and became a writer, working for the National Enquirer for 15 years. I imagine that some of the tricks he learned in the carnivals came in handy at the Enquirer. I'm not just cracking on the supermarket tabloids there--I think in any kind of creative endeavor with a commercial bent there's an element of "marksmanship" that's not so far removed from the carnivals.
Shortly after meeting Barron, Fenton is introduced to gambling, and the pair soon run a clandestine casino out of Barron's basement, gleefully stripping their classmates of all their cash. Fenton, who was not the most popular guy in the school, learns that he's a lot brighter than the star basketball players, whose gifts on the court and in school can't help them in the casino, where Fenton and Barron--thanks to a thorough knowledge of math--have the edge. It's an unlikely sort of underdog story, and I'm guessing that you won't see an adaptation of that chapter as a movie of the week on the Hallmark Channel.
That episode highlights a theme that runs through the book--gambling and con artistry as a great equalizer: the jocks might get all the fame, but it is the scammers who get the fortune.
Fenton has a number of interesting adventures with Barron, eventually going on the road with him. He treats the reader to an insider's view of the various attractions of the traveling carnival, ranging from kids games to flat-out gambling games. You've got to read it to get the full flavor, but I'll give you a quick summary: they're all crooked. Even if you do win a prize, it's usually less than the price of one shot, anyway.
The memoir builds slowly to its climax, a thrilling contest of conning whose resolution is doubly appropriate (though I'm not going to spoil the ending for you). All in all, it's a good look at carnival life in Middle America in the 1960s, and a reminder that, though they never get an even break, suckers can't get enough of a shot at a "sure thing."

Years ago a friend and I got "clipped" playing "the Swinger" and "Football" when a carnival rolled into our small S. Dakota town. While a valuable life-lesson was learned, I'd always wondered how they did it. The workings of these and other "games" are revealed in this insiders look at Carnie culture. Bottom line: _nobody_ wins, unless the operator allows it.
A fascinating, funny, and often depressing read.

I read about this book in a trash magazine (don't ask me which one - I read them all.)
Anyway, after reading the review, I thought I might just buy it and see what all the hub-bub was about.
Eyeing the Flash : The Making of a Carnival Con Artist was probably one of the weirdest stories I've read in a long time. Peter manages to take you through his childhood, and introduces you to characters that you would never thought you would ever be introduced to. The characters are colorful and seedy. (Not that you would ever want these people as friends, or for that matter, acquaintances.)
I didn't know what to expect from this book, but found myself, again, reading it in ONE FELL SWOOP.
You know how you are dying to taste some new food, then it tastes bad, but you insist that your friend try it too? There you go.
