Owlknight follows Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon's two earlier novels about Darian Firkin, Owlflight and Owlsight. By now the boy who ran from barbarian invaders is both knight of Valdemar and a master mage; he is governor of a small province and in love with Keisha who returns his feelings, but he still has problems and responsibilities. For one thing, he has never solved the mystery of what happened to his parents. For another, Keisha refuses to marry him lest his role as governor and hers of healer come into conflict--and there are still barbarians beyond the border who threaten one day to come back.
The story of how these problems are all resolved is told in a quiet tone unusual in this sort of epic fantasy. Darian has as much to look within for the solution to these issues as to struggle in the outside world. The woodland journey during which he does this is much of the time a celebration of the renewal of the human soul by the natural world.
Lackey and Dixon have found a courtly, meditative way of telling an attractively simple story. Darian's growth to final maturity is inevitable, but still fascinating. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

An interesting ending.......2007-04-02
This last of the Darian's Valdemar books ties his story up nicely. It is interesting to see the growth of the character and ties up loose ends. We find out what actually happened to his parents and bridge the gap. We also get to see how Darian and his friends cope with the other Northern tribes that had a difficult time with the mage storms.
Eh........2007-03-08
It was... OK.
And really, there was just way too much navel-gazing teen angst.
I can't believe that Valdemar is exploring steam power, and yet still knows little about what's west of their country. It's like Lackey thought, "Oh, wow, the Lewis & Clark anniversary is coming up! Let's write something like that!!"
Kind of like "Oh, wow, Y2K might take away all our modern conveniences, so let's have the Mage Storms do that to the Empire!"
Jeeeez. I'd like to see more about the early Herald-Mages, or what really went down in Iftel. Maybe she touches on that in her gryphon novels, but I couldn't really stand the thought of morrrrrrre connnnnnsonnnnannnttttssssssssssssss than there ought to be in dialogue, so I've not even gone there.
And while I'm thinking about gryphons, why did it take flying sentient beings so LONG to make their way to Valdemar?
I miss the quality of the Vanyel books.
I also wish that the Hawkbrothers had some kind of flaw???
good read.......2007-01-11
the nice thing about Lackey's writing is the character development that occurs. Darian's tale exemplifies her skill in handling character conflict and growth.
Last Book in the Valdemar series.......2007-01-04
This is interesting as the last series in the land of Valdemar. It has tied in history of all the rest of the series and expanded into the nooks and crannies that might have been left out.
I enjoyed it as a final book in the series and anyone who has read the first and second in the series would probably agree that the ending is not weak.
Just make sure you do read the first and second before the 3rd because it is not a stand-alone book by any means.
Darian's Tale.......2006-07-31
Loved all three of the books of Darian's tale, ive reread them a dozen times and still find much enjoyment in the series

If you like mysterious vampires known as the Dark Ones, castles filled with treasure unlike any you can ever imagine, a heroine more content to translate obscure languages than work charms, and a supporting cast of imps, betrayers, and immortals, then SEX, LIES, AND VAMPIRES is definitely the book for you.
Nell Harris is the type of woman who delights in the old-namely, in ancient artifacts. A junior professor of medieval history in Seattle, she's been lured to the Czech Republic by Melissande Banacek to view the Holy Grail of her profession-the Graven Plate, a breastplate from a suit of armor made in the late 1300's at the castle of Churburg. A legend among medievalists, no one has ever laid eyes upon the interlocking plates that detail the history of a knight-errant. For Nell, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. Unfortunately, upon her arrival at the home of Ms. Banacek, she gets a little more than she bargained for.
Nell is not one to believe in paranormal beings or things that go bump in the night. So, when she spots a common Central European Imp in Melissande's living room, she's a little unnerved. When Melissande goes on to inform Nell that she's a Dark One, a Moravian vampire, Nell decides that the lady must be insane. Next, this strange lady goes on to tell her that Nell herself is a Charmer. A demon lord by the name of Asmodeus has taken Melissande's brother and nephew hostage, and a fellow vampire by the name of Adrian, whose also known as The Betrayer, is responsible for it all. Bound to Asmodeus by a curse, Melissande's brother and nephew cannot escape. Hence the need for Nell, who as a Charmer has the power and ability to charm the curse.
All would be easy if not for the fact that Nell has forgotten that ten years ago she actually believed in charms, curses, and her abilities. After a charm gone wrong killed her best friend, Nell buried herself in the past-and tangible evidence. Now she's been tricked into helping a boy who can only survive with her help-and in return, she'll have sole possession of the Graven Plate.
Greed and the desire for tenure may be the motivating factors at the start of her journey, but joining forces with Adrian, who isn't what she first thought him to be, is what keeps her going. There's more at stake than the release of a vampire and his son, and it's up to Nell and Adrian to combine their powers to rescue a society on the verge of collapse.
SEX, LIES, AND VAMPIRES is full of fun characters, quirky dialogue, and the redeeming power of love. This isn't the first book I've read by Ms. MacAlister featuring the Dark Ones, and it most certainly won't be my last. I love Ms. MacAlister's world of vampires and supernatural beings, and once you pick up one of her books, I'm sure you'll feel the same.
Great fun .......2007-04-15
Impossible to put the book down. Instantly appealing and engaging story, revealing yet tasteful and seductive. Creative and catchy ^-^ Absolutly love it !!!
Tired story, but cool Mummies!.......2006-09-06
Katie Macalister has a ton of fans, so I'm thinking that maybe this book just wasn't for me. I'm a fan of the Anita Blake series, Mary Janice Davidson and Michelle Rowan so I though, hey let's give Sex Lies and Vampires a try.
I finished the whole book, but I couldn't get into it. There were some really great parts-- Mummies etc. Macalister can be terribly funny. The problem lies in the repitition and the dialouge. The characters seem empty and the story tended to repeat itself a lot. They spent a LOT of time traveling from one place to the next. Every couple chapters there was a "on the train" scene. AUGH!
Anyway, a gagillion fans can't be wrong-- Macalister is doing something right, and there is no denying she's a gifted writer... the story just wasn't for me.
fun, wacky, naughty but a little bit underdone.......2006-07-05
As always Katie Macalister never fails to make me laugh. I hope she'll never lose her sense of humor which I always love about her writing style. I had a good laugh reading this book! The problem I have about this book is she did not describe more about Nell Harris. I know she has left sided hemiplegia, a charmer in denial, boobsy and tall, but then what? I do like Adrian though, alot! Nell and Adrian are suited for each other forever! There nothing more romantic than saving the one you love from eternal damnation! But I really hate his son Damian, what an ungrateful brat! Im looking forward to read about Sebastian. I wonder what his story is, hope Nell and Adrian will make an appearance in Just One Sip. Wish Katie will describe more in detail about her main characters and more about the world of the Dark Ones.
I Can't Help Loving the Dark Ones!.......2006-04-03
Katie Mac is one of my favorite authors & I can't help loving this book!
Nell is employed by Mellisande, Christian Dante's cousin ( he's our main reaccurring character in the 3 books of the series), to act as a Charmer & save Mellisande's nephew. Not told this when she was flown to the Czhech Republic, Nell refuses. She hasn't reversed a curse since a fatal college accident that left her with a stroke 10 years ago.
When Nell is persuaded to look around Christian's castle she runs into Adrian, a.k.a. THE BETRAYER. She's the only one in nearly 5 centuries who doesn't fear him though & Adrian quickly realizes she is the Beloved who can save his soul. He didn't believe she existed. Now Nell helps him to save Mellisandes nephew, (shocker>>>!! Adrian's son!!!) & destroy the baddy in a most abrupt fashion, so that they can share eternity together. Throw in a few mummies cheerfully folling Nell like puppies, cameo's by one of you favorite ghosts from a previouse book, & a few well loved reaccurring characters ( & one that goes bad!) & you get a great novel that will be hard to put down!

Good Strong Characters with enough history to feel like fact.......1999-08-10
The story was well written and moved along very well. The story line shifted from Ardagh's personal trauma as a falsely accused traitor to the the very traitorous atmosphere of an early Irish king and his court. The end left the possibility of a reconciliation with his Sidhe brother (very small possibility!) and also was open ended enough with political struggles to envision more books following. The magic was not overblown or out of place. Overall a very good story with plenty of action and thought put into it.
Prince Out of Faerie; Duck Our of Water.......1999-02-21
First off, I don't like the cover as much as "King's Son, Magic's Son" or "A Strange and Ancient Name" and that put me off for awhile, (especially w/Book I written there, thought it'd be an epic, don't have time to get immersed in one of THOSE right now), but the same writing style and great plots are in this book as in her others. Actually this is a really good book, with characters you like. Ardagh is kind and fair, but not mushy enough too make him wussy, he IS, after all, a Sidhe prince. The trials and confusion he faces in the human realm are funny and the problems in human politics are engaging. Try it out.
The story of a Prince who stands to his sworn comrades........1998-10-31
To be the younger brother of a very suspicious Sidhe king is not a good thing. A young Sidhe prince must learn this on the hard way. Exiled from his rightful place he must learn to find his way in the realms of men. I really enjoyed reading this book because it`s the kind of book you can't stop reading.
Unusual premise, believable characters.......1998-06-16
Cast out of the Kingdom of the Faery on the unfounded accusation of treason, Prince Ardagh finds himself in dirty, smelly 7th Century Ireland. Totally unprepared, hardly able to survive and incapable of lying, he is accepted as a guest by the local High King. At first all he wants to do is return home and regain his honour but gradually he becomes more and more involved with these humans and their affairs. A very interesting novel, with some strong characters. The author brings this period of Irish history to life and at the same time tells a wonderful fantasy.

Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2005-09-04
This book is amazingly simple to read and use with astonishing results to rid the body of aches and pains.
Unreliable.......2004-03-15
The first page I turned to was a section on a positional release for pectoralis minor. She claimed its origin was on ribs 2-4. Hertling & Kessler, McGee, Snell, Grays, Netter, Trevel, Beil, Tortora, 2 different muscle testing books, two different kinesiology books, and personal experience with cadavers say that pectoralis minor originates on ribs 3-5!
This would have been inconsequential except that her reason for treating pec minor was to SPECIFICALLY MOBILIZE THE SECOND RIB. This means she was using pec minor's erroneous attachment as a BASIS for treatment. Upon further review of this book, I have found it is littered with simular errors. With all of the author's training, she doesn't seem to have a grasp on rudementary aspects of knowledge. With that being said, I cannot trust the knowledge contained in this book or any of her volumes.
One other point: Throughout the book she constantly "buffs-up" her form of treatment; as if to try to convince me on how revolutionary this method is. She has many many trademarked names for new things (all of which have been found in other disciplines; specifically craniosacral therapy/myofacial release and any routine positional release book), and many instances where she reiterates how new and involved IMT is. Her self promoting actually makes her look unconfidant about her treatment; that it cannot hold up on its own merit without promotion. Recommended books: Postional Release Therapy by D'Ambrogio, Spinal Manipulations by Bourdillan, and Principles of Manual Medicine.
great book for the clinician.......2001-02-25
I use this book alot in the clinic (outpatient PT). The strain/counterstrain techniques are illustrated and very effective. Alot of theory, but lots of practical applications with muscle energy, strain/counterstrain, and even tendon/ligament therapy. Highly recommend it!

Book Description
Many of the most enchanting ingredients of an old-fashioned American Christmas are of German origin, traditions such as St. Nicholas (Santa Claus), the Christmas tree (Tannenbaum), kugels (blown glass ornaments), woodcarvings (nativity figures, nutcrackers), "The Messiah" by George Frederick Handel, and the Christmas carol "Silent Night," composed on Christmas Eve in 1818 by Franz Gruber. These and other traditions of German origin, embraced worldwide, are described in this book.
Also included are historical facts and folklore. German literature, cinema, language art, and heritage are all presented.
Karin Gottier's own story of childhood in Germany during World War II and adulthood in America is heart warming. She says: "In November and early December, when the sun sets and the sky turns red, children say that Christkindl is heating his bake oven to make Christmas cookies."
The smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, anise, and nuts promise the "tastes of Christmas" (gingerbread men and houses, the beautiful designs of springerle cookies). The recipes included in the book represent a joyous and bountiful observance of the season.
German-American Life: Recipes and Traditions features German Americans in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Connecticut, New York, Missouri, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and all over the United States.

Overall a Good Purcahse.......2002-05-11
Wasn't as extensive as I would have hoped, I might have been expecting too much, and didn't contain alot of jars available on the market. But what it did contain was very good and I found very useful.
Collector's Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars, Book III.......2001-10-03
This book was not helpful at all. I have many older McCoy cookie jars and none of them were listed. This book mainly has new cookie jars listed. So if you are looking for a price guide for older jars this is not the book.
Roerig's Cookie Jar Book III Review.......2001-09-11
Found this extremely helpful, especially the photographs. I was thankful for pricing guidance that the author also included. Information of the backgrounds of the manufacturers was interesting but a found a few that were too brief to nothing at all. When selling these jars it is always good to be able to pass on that type of information to the buyer. History was not covered in this book as this was the 3rd book covering the subject. I found this to be a very valuable reference tool to have available.
Beautiful Library Volume Picturing Cookie Jar Collectibles.......2000-04-09
This is the 3rd edition of the popular book, featuring more than 1,800 large, sharp full color photos in its 360 pages. No repeats from the prior editions. There is not much in the way of background information, but loads of beautiful pictures, descriptions and prices. A complete index makes it easy to find the jars you're interested in. If you like to look at cookie jars, you'll love this picture encyclopedia.
Need to know information from cover to cover............1999-12-03
The Enyclopedia is well written in an easy to read and understand format.....Starting with the Intro and Hints to collectors, the authors relay their extensive knowledge to the reader...including their views on what to collect and how to collect in the world of cookie jars.....The full color photos of the jars are very helpful in identifying your next find when you go cookie jarrin' at the weekend flea market....In fact, I have all three books of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars.....I enjoy these books a great deal and they make great gifts for the collector in your family.

Wacky Cards but full of good ideas.......2007-05-24
This book is not something that you would take the design from and carry over into your own work verbatim as most everything is pretty out there. But it is a good place to get inspiration on the details.
Great Cards.......2007-04-17
This book is great and shows so many great card designs. I must say that some are not A+ more of a C, But still great to see designs of cards from all around the world and is a great book to have!
An unusual approach.......2007-03-08
This is an unusual but interesting approach to the design of business cards.
The unusual is the norm here, offbeat, grunge, etc. Not the type of business cards that would probably be accepted by most of your business clients...but that said, this is a collection of thought inducing ideas and graphics which will stimulate your creative juices...give you a starting point to begin a new design approach when the challenge of creating an image for your client that will be presented at the initial introduction to a new business relationship.

Book Description
Business Cards: The Art of Saying Hello is the ultimate business card book, bringing together the best examples of cards created by designers around the world. Business cards are a major design challenge; creating successful cards is all about the clever use of space; but just a little space. And that's not all. A design needs to make a splash, stand out from the crowd or announce you as part of a team; and how do you solve the problem of creating a universally understood message while catering to cultural differences and multiple languages? Materials are also important; not all cards are machine printed, and this book features cards on punched metal, stitched fabric, cards with heat-sealed cut-outs, or made from recycled subway tickets, plus clever examples of best-practice using make-your-own business-card machines.
Over 300 cards are grouped into sections reflecting different design approaches: Typography, Photography, Materials, Illustration and Found Objects. Proving just how inventive you can be with a limited space, this book is a rich source of ideas and inspiration both for designers and anyone wishing to make a statement with their business card.

If you're looking for more corporate business cards look, buy other books.
If you're looking for edgy, creative, personalized cards, then buy this book.
A little too "Creative" for me.......2006-07-28
This book was chock full of sketchy, clubby cards, but not really anything of substance. if you're looking for a really good reference guide to solid design, this isn't the book for you. Being an illustrator and Graphic Deisigner i thougth some of the concepts were good. including a guy who printed 2 color stickers out of his inkjet printer onto labels to stick them on his plain card (unique way of creating multiple cards from one shell right?). but on the whole they weren't really the cool, solid design work i was expecting.
business cards.......2006-07-19
For anyone looking to find a job in creating business cards, this set's for you! This set of business cards shows you all the time, energy and detail that goes into properly creating a message on a card. It's not easy, but this set can show you inventive and creative ways on how to make a career out of it. Definitely something inspiring businessmen should look into.

Customer Reviews:
A True Storyteller.......2003-11-13
I've shared this book with many friends and family members - and not one person has been disappointed. There is no sugar coating here, no flowery, dramatic words . . . just the true story of a very real soldier. Mr. Miller writes his book as if he's talking to you from his favorite chair in the den - conversationally, sometimes with humor and sometimes with candid sadness. His experiences in Vietnam will make you realize (perhaps for the first time) that these young men and women believed in their country and proudly fought for it. Regardless of how anyone feels about Vietnam, the Al Millers of this world deserve our thanks. In many ways, he gave up his youth for this country. The skirmishes, the camaraderie and, yes, the love he eventually found, make this book an undiscovered gem.
