Pobre Ana.......2007-03-16

This is an excellent 'beginning' book for anyone who wants to increase their Spanish learning.

It consists of 300 of the most frequently used words in a first year Spanish class that make up a wonderful story.

It is suitable, I feel, for anyone from Middle School to adult.

Good Spanish I Reader.......2003-05-17

I teach first-year high school Spanish and I use Pobre Ana near the end of the course. I could use it earlier as well.

The chapters are short. The story contrasts life in California with life in Tepic, Mexico, all through the eyes of Ana.

Ana is from California and doesn't think her quality of life is adequate since she doesn't have a new Mustang, et.al. However, once in Mexico she sees that relationships and the things she can control (like knowing Spanish well) are more important.

The story is a good language learning tool, especially the obviously necessary use of the indirect object pronouns throughout with all the "she said to them", "he said to her" tags.

I would have given 5 stars, but my early edition had a couple of character's names mixed up. I assume that this has been corrected by now.

He comes and goes, wrangling over terms and demands, and the days stretch into weeks, the weeks into months.

I just finished Bel Canto for the second time, and enjoyed it even more than I did on first reading. Without rushing towards the end to find out "what happens" -- which I did, in spite of myself, the first time, I was able to luxuriate in Ms. Patchett's elegant, evocative sentences. Her characters are so deftly drawn that they will remain with you long after you close the covers of the book. She's able to do the impossible, it seems: write about love and music within a highly charged, almost over-the-top scenario, without ever becoming melodramatic or maudlin. I believed this book so deeply, it seemed every word was true. Every character was real. Every note of music was there for the listening. I understand why another reviewer bought every one of Ann Patchett's books after reading this one -- I'm about to do the same!

Ann Patchett's Bel Canto is wonderful. Her use of the English language is a wonder to behold. You will remember her descriptions long after you forget the name of other novels. This is truly her best work.

Oh - this book! This wonderful, amazing, lyrical, gut and heart-wrenching book. This was the first book I read by the incredibly talented Ms. Patchett - and upon finishing it - I promptly went about buying everything else she's written. The characters are so beautifully drawn, the language is so evocative, the feelings behind the words are so intense... I just loved this book and was so sad that I eventually had to finish it.

Language like chocolate.......2007-09-05

Some books have great plots that are worth the read regardless of the writing. These books become bestsellers. But a rare few books tell a good story while wrapping it in language that is like smooth, dark chocolate. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ian McEwan are a few that come to mind. This book is one of those books. The story is so compelling it could have held its own in the hands of a lesser writer, but Ann Patchett delivers words so lovely that sometimes you have to pause just to savor a sentence. Never a word out of place. Late in the books she startles the reader with very vulgar language in the thoughts of one of her characters - and even this word choice is soooo perfect, slapping the reader awake as they have been floating along in a sea of the most tranquil prose. Don't miss this book!!!

Delicious language, worth every moment........2007-08-20

Patchett's use of language is a joy and I'll hold this wonderful story close to my heart for a long time. This gifted writer created a sense of time and place in the lives of these unlikely bedfellows that transcended my expectations, surprised me and moved me. What a delight. I'll be wrapping this book in beautiful paper and giving it to those who appreciate beautiful things.

a biased book, a dangerous message.......2000-10-04

This book scares me because of the damage it can do to women contemplating or having an affair. It points out a lot of "facts" about affairs and it gives examples of women who have gained a positive experience through affairs. However, it only shows examples of women who claim to have had a good experience with affairs. It doesn't mention the millions of women who have suffered devastating effects of getting involved with married men. It down plays the 'sadness' when an affair ends. This is not mere 'sadness', this is devastation and often the affair is a manifestation of a much larger personal issue within a woman. I beg to differ with the assumptions and suggestions within this book which indicate that a significant number of women don't want the affair to lead to marriage. It cannot be proved, however, I highly doubt that it is common within the female pysche to be very ok with having a deep and connected love affair end. It's like having a part of yourself ripped from you without painkillers. And the women who claim to be ok with having an affair end clearly are detached from themselves in some manner. If a woman wants an affair, give her ALL the facts....and ask her what form of distraction she'll use to alleviate the pain of an affair. Will she drink it away? Shop it away? Find another man to alleviate it? And ask her if she's willing to be part of the decline of a marriage. Because women contemplating having affairs are in a position to satify her desires or push the man back. Perhaps the man rejected will instead work on his marriage. Maybe his marriage is DOOMED and better off done. But, if indeed the marriage ends and whether the affair ends or not, the aftermath is a long hurt for all involved. And people can deny this, but denial doesn't make it not true.

The author is biased and irresponsible. I got an ice cold feeling reading this book. Society and the human spirit doesn't need more of this hogwash.

Good book to leave on the shelf........2000-07-14

I read a few other books about this and then I read this one. This book helped me change my mind about what I was going to do. It was something thoughtless and it probably would have done a lot of damage to my self and my spouse who I don't want to lose. I'm on to some healthy stuff.

coping begins with facing what you're doing.......2000-06-27

This book is missing a lot of critical information! 'How to have a successful affair' is one chapter that I could do without. 'Be prepared for the betrayed spouse to find out'? How do you prepare for a possible nuclear blast?

You may be prusuing your own happiness through an affair at the extreme expense of others including children. Much information points to adultery as a transgenerational problem. Did your parents do it? What was that like? It's an unfortunate legacy to pass on to your children.

Sneaky underhanded behavior frought with lies such as adultery is never ok.

Let that 'secret' out so that the betrayed is given the basic human dignity to make his/her own desicions....especially when VD and AIDS can come their way.

Conducting a secret affair, and then enjoying the everyday comforts of home with the unknowing spouse, (who may be devastated by this truth), is a form of rape.

Finally, the Truth About Affairs..........2000-06-05

I am currently in an affair with a much older, married man. This affair has not been easy on me...keeping secrets from my parents, hiding the truest love I've ever known from co-workers and friends, not being able to spend time with the man I love. It's not easy being the other woman and finally I've found a book that makes me feel that I am not alone. That all the effort I'm putting into this relationship may well be worth it. It doesn't make me feel guilty for being the other woman, like so much of society would. Ours is a loving, caring, passionate love affair. I couldn't ask for more. I'm glad to see that the author of this book acknowledges that affairs are not only normal, but healthy as well. A must read for any woman who is in an affair and has no one to talk to.

I am reading it for the second time. I am trying to make myself say it is ok to have an affair with a married man. My ex left me 18 years ago with two babies for the other one. They did not marry but it hurt so very bad... and now am I doing the same thing. Having an affair! Affairs can help marriages and each person the book says. READ THIS BOOK IT HELPS

It has a lot of great ideas and simple meals to fix. The only reason it gets a 4 and not a 5 is because I like pictures so I can see what the meal is to look like.

I have really loved this book! After reading "The Hallelujah Diet", I purchased this book for more recipe ideas. As the title implies, weekly mealplans are given, along with grocery lists for the week to prepare all of those meals. I think it is well put together and I have really enjoyed the recipes. It makes this eating lifestyle that much more doable. Well worth the $9, and then some!

Flick through this lovely paperback and you'll realise that the style of Times Square is to have no style apart from a bubbly exuberance, which jumps out from two hundred graphics shown.

Some wonderful material has been selected, the chapter on the Great White Way has a spread of eighteen beautiful theater (always spelt theatre) programs and over the page illustrator Franz Felix has four stunning covers for Theatre Magazine. A nice touch is a page of eleven half-torn theater tickets (1947 to 1958) produced, it seems, by some local jobbing printer. Sign Spectaculars chapter includes ten postcards from 1914 to 1955 revealing the amazing neon displays around the Square. I've always noticed, over the years, the Bond Clothing store and their neon claim of Two Trouser Suits, now long gone I expect.

The nine chapters just about cover everything the Square had to offer and the range of graphic material shown is very impressive. Well designed and printed, I think this super book will interest graphic designers, pop culture fans and New Yorkers who want a souvenir of their famous Crossroads of the World.
