Customer Reviews:
Well, it was an attempt.......2007-03-22
Being a big fan of the book Son of Holmes, I had high hopes for this book when I first found out about it. I thought the premise for getting Lupa and Giraud back together was a bit weak; there is so much that could have been done in World War I other than the Russian Revolution. Lescroart tried too hard trying to fit this in the history of Nicholas II and Rasputin, but it was too forced. While the book does eventually include Lupa and his father, Holmes, finally bonding, this would have worked much better as the last book in a long series; not as the second of two books.
All in all, you can skip this book, although its not a terrible read, which is why I am feeling generous and giving it 3-stars.

Another Winning SEAL Story.......2007-05-14
There are three main reasons to buy this book: 1) Suzanne Brockmann wrote it, so you know it's going to be good; 2) it IS a great story, and 3) both Ms. Brockmann and MIRA are very up-front about this book being a reissue of one of her previous releases.
Originally published in December 1998 as It Came Upon A Midnight Clear (Tall Dark And Dangerous) (Silhouette Intimate Moments, 896), the story has lost none of it's originality, sensuality, or action/adventure.
The story revolves around William "Crash" Hawken, a member of SEAL Team Twelve who gets framed for the murder of his Admiral boss and mentor, Jake Robinson. With his SEAL Team, superiors, and once friends convinced that he set the Admiral up for assassination, Crash has no one to turn to. Thankfully, someone comes to HIM.
Nell Burns spent a lot of time with Crash the previous year, at the home of Admiral Robinson and his live-in lover, Daisy Owens. The couple had been together for over twenty-years, and although they'd never had children of their own, they considered Crash to be their son. When Daisy is diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor, both Nell, her personal assistant, and Crash, her nephew, decided to make her last days as wonderful as possible.
That last year, Nell and Crash were lovers--for one night. But neither has ever forgotten the other, and now that Crash is literally fighting for his freedom, reputation, and very life, the two are on the run to find the real murderer of Admiral Robinson.
You won't go wrong with this book, or any other in Suzanne Brockmann's SEAL series.
Good early SEAL Alpha Team novel.......2006-08-29
The holidays aren't a great time for William "Crash" Hawken. Last Christmas, his cousin Daisy died of a brain tumor after finally tying the knot with Jake, her lover of 20 years. Daisy and Jake (a Navy admiral and former SEAL) were surrogate parents to Crash, who was abandoned by his distant father. Nell, Daisy's personal assistant fell for Crash the first time she saw him, but like any good SEAL who does not want to leave anyone behind, he kept his distance from her until he desperately needed comfort after Daisy's funeral.
A year later, he stands accused of treason in the murder of Jake his mentor, as well as two SEALS on his team. He knows it is a set up. He knows that a high ranking officer is behind it, since Jake told him this just before passing out. He just does not know who. Not even his SEAL team believes he might be innocent; Nell is the only one who believes in him. She helps him escape from custody at the courthouse then tells his lawyer she'll pay to have the ballistics tests rerun on the gun that killed Jake, knowing that Crash will be exonerated. This manages to put Nell on the bad guys poop list, and just as a hit man is about to strike, Crash puts a halt to it. His plan is to get the name of the top dog out of the gunmen's mouth, by any means necessary. But can her and Nell possibly have a future after she sees this other side to him?
One of Brockmann's better earlier Harlequin offerings (originally published as "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"), she manages to make this more than a revenge fantasy. Despite Nell being a girly girl, she manages to prove to Crash and the reader that she is no shrinking violet.
Early Brockmann--really picks up after slow start........2005-06-28
William 'Crash' Hawken doesn't make any promises. He meets a girl, treats her well, but lets her know that he'll only be in town for a few days. Because being a Navy Seal means he won't be in any one place for long. He can't even promise a woman his government will let her know if he's killed in the line of duty. Because duty, for a Navy Seal working covert operations, is very much a gray zone. That's why Hawken has ignored the obvious chemistry he has with Nell Burns. Nell is the kind of woman who could capture Hawken's heart--put both himself and herself at risk.
When Hawken is framed for the murder of his best friend, Admiral Jake Robinson, though, only Nell believes in him. The court is lined with his brothers-in-arms, all quick to believe the 'evidence' and unwilling to believe that Hawken could never have committed this crime.
Nell doesn't mind rocking boats and calling on old connections to make sure Hawken gets a fair investigation--even though he did stomp on her heart the one time they made love. What she doesn't know is that her involvement puts her at risk. Because whoever framed Hawken definitely doesn't want anyone taking a closer look.
Author Suzanne Brockmann has become one of today's top-selling authors with her Navy Seal-inspired heroes and the tough, smart women who tame them. HAWKEN'S HEART shows Brockmann in an early stage of her career. (HAWKEN'S HEART is a re-release of Silhouette Intimate Moments #896 from 1998 entitled IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR). HAWKEN lacks the tight pacing of more recent Brockmann titles. I found the first half slow going as Hawken and Nell develop and then abandon a relationship. In the second half, Brockmann delivers her trademark mix of action, danger, patriotism, and emotion.
Bottom line, skim the first half, then hunker down and savor the second.
Aims straight for the Heart.......2005-06-03
Nearly 7 years have passed but this reissue from Suzanne Brockman's Tall, Dark and Dangerous series continues to captivate with its beautifully-spun characters. Hawken's Heart, originally entitled "It came upon a Midnight Clear", is a heartfelt romance between Navy SEAL Billy "Crash" Hawkens and his cousin's personal assistant Nell Burns. Brockman sculpts the secondary romance between Admiral Jake Robinson and Daisy Owens with tenderness and pumps up the adrenaline when Crash is being framed for the assassination of Robinson. The chemistry between the feisty Nell and the brooding Crash is masterfully done. With some climactic surprises and a heart-rendering finale, Hawken's heart aims straight for the heart and establishes itself as one of Brockman's best.
This author delivers the bang for the buck!.......2005-04-19
This author delivers the bang for the buck! Unforgettable characters, keep reading through the night suspense.
Crash Hawken, government agent, becomes the prime suspect in the assassination attempt his commanding officer. He is charged with treason, conspiracy, and murder. The only friend he has left is Nell Burns, a woman who believes that a friend in need is a friend indeed. These two, who were once lovers, flee together in an effort to find the real killer and clear Crash's name.
Nell and Crash have a history -- as friends, as lovers. And she knows he could not have committed these crimes. Soon they are on the run, determined to uncover what really happened the night of the attempted assassination. But first they have to survive another day.

Brief, informative, and interesting. Chelation therapy might be a good alternative to explore before we jump on the expensive surgical bandwagon...

30 pages and a ton of information. This is a great book to help you understand the basics of chelation. It's a very cheap way to learn about the therapy alternative to going under the knife.

Fun pastiche.......2002-03-06
If you're a fan of Zelazny's Amber, you need to track down this book, written by the co-author of the "Visual Guide to Castle Amber." The fact that it's a "Choose Your Own Adventure" type book might be offputting to some. It shouldn't be. This book features a truly enjoyable adventure of Random's that you will otherwise miss. It seems that copies are becoming increasingly difficult to come by: if you're an Amber completist, think about paying [MONEY] for this book.

Just diagnosed in Seattle.......2000-03-31
I was just recently diagnosed with diabetes a month ago. One of the first things I did was head to the bookstore and library. This was the first book I purchased. It simply explains EVERYTHING I needed to know about the nutritional needs and concerns of a diabetic. It helped to make what I thought a complicated and scary situation a lot easier to understand. THANK YOU!
I have since purchased the "The Diabetes Carbohydrate and Fat Gram Guide" as well. I carry this book with me wherever I go.
101 Nutrition Tips for People with Diabetes.......2000-03-23
Found this book to be very basic. This book would only serve someone who had not read and did not know anything about diabetes. It would be good for a teen. Did not feel it was worth the money I paid.
A "must have" book for diabetic patients.......1999-08-02
As a pharmacist, I stress the importance of diet and exercise to my diabetic patients during counseling of their medications...this book helps the diabetic patient achieve their caloric goals easier and tastier! Great book! I highly recommend!
Quick & Easy To Understand - Great Book!.......1999-08-02
I bought this book because of the quick and understandable answers it gives to many of the questions I have about my diet. Even though I see a dietitian at my doctor's visits, I sometimes have questions after I get home. I especially liked the section of questions on weight control and fat. This is a great book to have at home!

An excellent survey recommended above the prior edition for its detail and further depth........2006-10-14
This second updated edition of a diabetes fact book packs in nutrition details as did the first - with a difference. It updates common questions and answers diabetics have about best eating routines for diabetes control, provides both a review of basic nutrition facts and a survey of diabetes-specific issues, and provides not short but good-length answers to potentially confusing questions such as 'can I eat anything marked sugar-free?' An excellent survey recommended above the prior edition for its detail and further depth.

It's a COOKbook, not a NUKEbook.......2007-01-11
I actually have a much earlier edition of this book (1977) and 30 years later still turn to it when I want good, basic food made from scratch without a lot of complicated ingredients. I never felt the book was targeted at dorm cooking (a microwave lifestyle), but more for students sharing an apartment, house, or living the Greek life (i.e., kitchen available). 6-9 ingredients is too much? Boy, I guess that's a sign of a generation commited to convenience cooking because I don't think these recipes require expensive or unusual ingredients--just enough of them to make a decent dish. I would definitely buy this for a young person or couple starting out because I think it's good, basic food that is both budget and nutrition conscious--but even better, results in tasty food.
No Pics but good simple recipes.......2006-10-27
This is one of the few recipe books I have gotten and kept over the years. I like it because it has simple, filling meals that aren't your typical condensed soup fare. They have some imagination but are all pretty tasty. And they come from real students.
too many ingredients, too much time.......2006-09-11
It seems that these recipes were written by either mothers of college kids or 70 year old sophomores. Two recipes for LIVER? Come onnnn. Most of the recipes have 6 - 9, even 14 ingredients. A coed is never going to buy so many ingredients called for in this book, let alone a guy. I bought this for my niece and I decided to give it to her as a gag gift, writing my own takes on some recipes. They may taste delicious (except the liver) but even I don't want to take the time.
NOT a Microwave Cookbook.......2006-09-10
I was very disapointed when this book came in the mail. I looked up microwave cookbooks and this one popped up. There is not a SINGLE recipe in it that is for microwaves. It may be a great book but beware, if you are looking for a microwave cookbook this is not the one for you.
Mealtime 101.......2002-08-28
From the Ivy League in the east, through the Big Ten in the heartland, to the Pac-10 Schools in the West, Geri Harrington has gathered an absolutely lipsmacking-good collection of recipes from college students. Parents, put this book into the trunk next to the stereo and the computer as you head off to campus with your young adults.
The inexpensive, nutritious recipes meet with the approval of this chef-alias-mom with three decades of kitchen experience. Written with a brisk, light-hearted tone throughout, this book is an excellent volume for those who like to peruse cookbooks just to read. Try some of the offerings and you'll be surprised at how quickly and easily you can put together a good meal!
Kudoes to Geri Harrington for this popular book.

Too expensive!!.......2006-06-30
I know, I know, this book is made for collectors and these things are usually expensive but i was expecting something much better. It's just a nice book with some examples of old-time advertising, but, where are the descriptions?? You can hardly see any. I'm disappointed cos it's definitely too expensive for what it shows...

Dressing for the home.......2001-01-26
With this book you can introduce yourself into the world of home decor. I was fascinated with much of the advice and learned so much about defining space, using color, lighting enhancements and selecting furnishings and finishing touches. The book highlights spaces such as dining rooms, living rooms, great rooms and bathrooms, giving detailed advice and tips on how to get the best look for your space. Interiors also taught me to examine my own personality before starting the journey that will turn my new timberframe home into a reflection of me, my family and the way we like to live.

Timberframe Interiors is a delicious book to be savored by anyone who is in the process of decorating their home, or to be enjoyed by anyone else who simply wants to allow their imagination to soar. Although most of these magnificent homes are expansive, the photos and text provide a rich variety of tips to help anyone add flair to the decoration of even a modest apartment. I can't imagine anyone not being inspired by these homes that approach cathedral-like majesty.

worst timber frame book ever.......2007-10-02
Don't buy this book!
Unless you want a lessons in terrible architecture and how NOT to build a timber frame.
The pictures are also the worst quality I have ever seen in a book. Waste of my money.
Save Your Money.......2001-06-14
I found this book a waste of time. Looking for actual timber frame plans, instead I found a bunch of pictures in no particular order or organization. May make a makeshift coffee table book for people to read while you think big thoughts in your completed timber frame home, but it sure won't help you design one.
Dreaming of a Timberframe Home?.......2000-11-15
As the editor of LivingHome, I have to say that this new book is a real winner. With the popularity of timberframe homes, many of the best companies put out beautiful brochures (some even charging for them), and some have Web sites, but the photos on the Web don't do justice to the soaring spaces and gorgeous interiors of these type of homes. The authors of this book have gathered some of the best photos from some of the best companies. Plus there is good actionable information and resources for those of us who say that some day we are going to build one these beauties, no matter what.

Cool Book, Terrible DVD.......2007-06-25
If you plan to get this book for inspiration, it looks pretty good. But the DVD is almost worthless as the navigation makes it hard to watch and then the actual examples have text copyright information that is very distracting. Feels more like you paid for stock artwork but still get the white lines over the art. Very lame. There are probably some better inspiration material on the web. The packaging on this book is nice but don't expect too much in terms of content.
dont even bother.......2007-03-23
"Motion by Design" is a book about motion graphics. One might expect that a DVD enclosed with such a book might be chock full of tremendous examples of cool stuff. Not the case. The dvd is a mess. The disc is hard to navigate, videos play as windows within menus, NOT full screen, but that's made worse by the huge copyright super on the frames and an unanavoidable narration track. I feel ripped off by a promise unkept. Don't waste your cash on this ripoff.
very delayed reference.......2007-03-05
qualified motion samples from all media with a short text explanation.
That's ok for me. But what's the problem with the DVD interface guys? You can not play all so you have to select each title from a long list, again again, its pain. The interface design so cheesy, low-end DVD for hi-end content. You can only watch a part of some long samples such as music videos, shame... 5 stars for the book not DVD.
Excellent Reference.......2007-03-05
This is an excellent expose on the the History and development of Motion Design. A must have for any student or Motion Design Practioner. The comments by Kyle Cooper and Dan Pappalardo are particularly profound. The author provides a terrific range and history but fails to mention (2) key pionners in the development of the art and craft prior to Kyle Cooper: Pittard Sullivan of the United States and Gedeon of France. Despite these ommissions the book is required reading for anyone interested in the art of motion design narrative.
Book Description
Kyle Cooper is acclaimed as the most innovative and important designer of film titles since Saul Bass. This attractive and informative book offers the first critical and historical assessment of Cooper's impressive design achievements. In this book, Andrea Codrington relates that Cooper's work first garnered major attention in 1995 with his creation of the extraordinary title sequence for the horror thriller Seven, which is credited with bringing about a renaissance in innovative film title design. Seven's titles were touted as short films in their own right-not merely a "design solution" but a metaphorical representation of the film as a whole. Codrington also discusses Cooper's work at the titles specialist R/Greenberg before he founded in 1996 his own Los Angeles based company, Imaginary Forces. As creative director there, Cooper now oversees a ninety-person team and has designed a stunning succession of highly regarded titles for such films as Eraser, Mission Impossible, Twister, The Mummy, The Horse Whisperer, The Negotiator, and Arlington Road. Kyle Cooper is essential reading for anyone engaged with graphic design, film, and visual communication.
Customer Reviews:
If size does matter..........2004-04-06
Then first of all its small. That is, its smaller in size than the average design book. (24X19 cm). I don't know what I was hoping to find there but looking at stills from a work that is very much time and movement oriented seems awkward especially when these breathtaking Film titles are easily found on IF's web site. (imaginaryforces.com) So what is there in the book after all? A nice summery of the (short) history of Title design. Commentary about coopers work. Some nice drafts and sketches for works. (Seven - Coopers most revered work appears in the book only in sketches) Note that they were drawn by storyboard artist and not by cooper.
Kyle cooper a genius of his art deserves much appreciation but if this book does it, well, you be the judge.
As a regular graphic design reference book, any David Carson or such would be better.
Customer Reviews:
collectors and completists only.......2007-08-02
This product, as another reviewer has said, is a somewhat short audio cassette which includes actual clips from the TV series of Cooper's personal recorder entries, along with a few additional recordings made for this release by Kyle McLaughlin in character. Unfortunately they are from only the short first season of the show. But for any Twin Peaks collector or completist, this at least is an official tie-in product.
~~~
I believe one of the previous reviewers meant to comment on the book The Autobiography Of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (A Twin Peaks Book) by Scott Frost [one of the writers from the show], which is not the same as this product.
The book - if you can find a copy - is a witty and entertaining companion to the series. It covers Cooper's life from childhood [and his first audio recorder] through his FBI career [including the tragedies surrounding his partner Windom Earle], and finally ends where the TV series begins. It also manages to do what the cassette does not, which is to offer more insight and exploration into Cooper's character beyond what we already see in the show.
This, along with The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer (A Twin Peaks Book) by Jennifer Lynch and the faux travelguide: Twin Peaks: An Access Guide to the Town by David Lynch and Mark Frost, completes a set of official book companions to the series.
One last note: as with "The Secret Diary..." there are a few inconsistencies between the description of some events in the books versus the TV series and the film prequel "Fire Walk With Me", but not enough to detract from the book's value overall.
/\^o^/\
Excerpt from the series.......2005-12-15
This tape is a collection of 40 audio excerpts from the TV series of Agent Cooper talking to Diane in his audio recorder. This is not a book, nor an audiobook. If you've seen the series, you've heard much of it already
Superb reading from an unlikely source.......1999-07-01
One may approach this book from the viewpoint that it is merely a cash in on the popular TV series. It is an original and fascinating read. The author constructs an exceptionally authentic history of Agent Dale Cooper. The book is funny, sad, original and will change your life.
Book Description
It is one thing to have a dream. It's quite another to turn a dream into reality, but that is what Dick Elder did by creating one of the best guest ranches in America from scratch--Colorado Trails Ranch. The story is about a young man who, despite all odds, wouldn't let his dream die. It's about horses, horse thieves, cowboys, Indians, love and infidelity, ranchers, radio, even angels in Purgatory. This chronicle of a single decade, the 1960s, is told honestly without embellishment or excuses.
The autobiography is packed with colorful characters whom the author brings to life in scenes rich with dialog that transport the reader smack dab into the middle of the moment. Humor and tragedy are woven into the fabric of a long and arduous journey into the sunset, in search of that elusive pot of gold.
Finding Success.......2005-07-20
Which Way is West by Dick Elder is a must read for anyone interested in conquering their dreams and living life as an adventure. In Which Way is West, Elder chronicles the seemingly impossible task he and his friends took on when they built a dude ranch in Colorado in the 60s without a business plan or much money. But what they had plenty of was drive, determination and elbow grease, essential elements in all great American success stories. Elder survived the ups and downs of starting a new business with his sense of humor intact. And while partners and marriages where lost along the way, in the end he achieved the success of his dreams, doing what he loved. He affirms the old adage the only way you can fail in life is if you quit. I just hope I have an easier time of it than Elder.
WOW....This is not your everyday autobiographical tale. This author tells a story that can surely be used by motivational speakers to show what you can accomplish when all odds are against you. In an extremely fascinating and straightforward manner he tells us of his journey across his rainbow of life seeking his unique pot of gold. Most enjoyable.
