I didn't really like this book. Part of the reason is because I've read 4 of K'wan's later work and REALLY liked them. This was his second book and you can tell. It started off too slow and took too long to get to the action. When the action did start, however, it was good. You have to wait until the end of the book and that is why I didn't it.

I was wondering what his earlier work was like... and now I know. I won't be reading his 1st book but I will be reading what he puts out next. If anything, this shows how much an author can grow over time. It says this book was put out in 2003. You think they would have fixed all the typos and mis-spelled words in FOUR years!!!

I'm not a teacher or anything but the mistakes were glaring and embarassing. Also, when I'm really pushing to get my customers to read stories by Black authors this doesn't help at all. The first printing... maybe. 4 years down the line is just plain stupid!!!

Very Enjoyable Fantasy Romance.......2007-07-11

I really had no expectations going in as this was my first exposure to Gena Showalter's writing...I found the main characters engaging and thouroughly charming in their exagerated humanity. Every foible rang true as they stumbled through their relationship often against their wills. Atlantis became a location I might enjoy visiting if only to see how the multitudes of mythical creatures both dark and light interact on many levels. I found it to be a stimulating and enjoyable read from cover to cover!

If you like sexy paranormal stories with a dash of mythology, then Gena Showalter will always be your girl. With JEWEL OF ATLANTIS, she's taken all the things that readers love-vampires, demons, nymphs, sacred tomes, obscure jewels, and queens of evil-and turned it into a love story that transcends the bonds of time.

Grayson James might be human, but he's also a member of the super-secret Otherworld Bureau of Investigation-and he's just been ordered to travel to Atlantis and find the elusive Jewel of Dunamis, which the recently discovered ancient scroll Ra Dracus talks about. Said to be able to overcome any enemy by foretelling the future and acting as a sort of lie-detector test to determine whether someone's lying or telling the truth, the OBI doesn't want the Jewel falling into the wrong hands. JEWEL OF ATLANTIS is an engaging read, filled with exciting characters and a highly descriptive underwater city. It's also sexy, funny, and a great read. If you like paranormal stories, you'll thoroughly enjoy Ms. Showalter's latest release.

You are the weakest link.......2007-05-09

Jewel of Atlantis is the 2nd of a (so far) 3 books series on the peoples of Atlantis and in my opinion is so far the weakest link. The characters interacted with each other fine, but individually were developed in a very strange way. There was no real explanation of why they dreamed of each other and no real explanation of what the hero, Grayson James, was going to do with his part-demon, part-vampire self in the "human world" the book just ended in a very harsh way.

A fun, quick read with enjoyable characters. Gray is one of the many brothers from a preivous novel that apparently has a secret job dealling with off world circumstances. Jewel is much wanted and prized possession due to her ability to see into the furture, present, and just all the way around. Basically, whoever controls her, can rule everything. Gray is sent to retrieve or distroy the Jewel of Atlantis. Well, he obviously was thrown into more than he expected, and I'm not just talking about Jewel. The world itself was a major eye-opener. Between the dragons, vampires, demons, and quicksand, Gray is running for his life.

I had a fun time reading this one. Showalter always seems to deliver a fun romp.

I found the book intriguing and an enjoyable read. It triggered a lot of questions, did Atlantis really exist? how could an advanced civilization be destroyed so completely? The author's account is so incredibly detailed, it leaves you wondering, how could he possibly have this knowledge? If you're at all interested in soul memory, channeling, past lives, and spiritual healing, it is a must read. It has been predicted that some major catastrophe is coming in the millenium, this book serves as a warning.

An Empowering Text.......2003-10-06

'Asserting Yourself: A Practical Guide for Positive Change' is the ideal gift for anyone who lacks confidence. I read the book and greatly enjoyed it, but as I have charisma, potency and a well-developed sense of 'self', it was not immediately applicable to my situation. So I called David Caruso and told him he should buy it. A month later he sent me this email:

'Schwarz, thanks for tipping me off. What a book! I only wish it had been around when I was in senior high. Being a slow learner, every day was toture. I was bullied, laughed at, locked in the toilet, glued to my chair, buried in the longjump pit and even mooned. And it was always by the same teacher. But since reading Sharon Anthony Bower's wonderful words, I can now assert myself. For instance, last week I went back to the bookshop and asked for a new copy because the one I'd been sold was stained. The woman behind the counter inspected the stains, looked at me and said, "Hey, I remember you from high school. The dumb kid who couldn't even read alphabet soup. Everyone! Look who it is... 'Cabbage' Caruso." Laughing hysterically as she superglued the book to the top of my head, she then said, "Get out of here, you pathetic little creep!" Excellent book.......2002-07-14

This is a very good book. Unlike other books in this category which dish out a lot of advice, this book gives practical step-by-step instructions that can be easily implemented in real life. The authors have used some innovative techniques from the fields of acting and theatre into assertiveness training. Reading and rereading this book often will definitely help everybody to improve their own lives as well as the lives of people whom they interact with.

Not bad, but..........2002-06-22

in many ways it's interchangeable with alot of other books on the topic of assertiveness out there. It's worth reading, certainly, I just wouldn't pay full price for it. The DESC model, and the quiz at the beginning to help the reader determine how assertive s/he currently is are great. The material on self esteem and stress were boring to me; I'd seen it before with other sources. Chapters 4 and 5 were the best; they got into the exercises/activities and the DESC model. The remaining chapters weren't as strong. The book started to drag at that point. That said, I do like that the author gave the reader alot of opportunity for practice; the exercises themselves are good. I just wish that there'd been more actual content and information. She could've done a supplemental workbook to include all the extra exercises.

I WAS HOMELESS AND HUNGRY FOR 7 YEARS!!!.......2002-04-24

Using the techniques of this book, I no longer am. I haven't
been for five years. And my family has not been homeless or
hungry for five years. We live in a beautiful apartment with
a pool and cable TV (one channel showing the front gate so that
homeless people won't bother US). HA! According to Joseph Wolpe
(pronounced WOOL-PEE), the father of Behavior Therapy, the point
of these books is to inhibit fear around people through Affection
or Anger just as relaxation is used to inhibit fear of bugs,
heights, or crowds in systematic desensitization (psychotherapy
through reciprocal inhibition). This particular text is the
favorite of the greatest researcher on depression of this or the last century (Dr. Martin Seligman, author of "Learned Optimism").
While homeless, I would use it in a free-floating style of going
nuts and then de-fusing my rage through positive action. This positive action. In this book. Strangely, while writing this review, I got a call from a bill collector. I am still hot.
I broke up her manipulative skills by just saying, "Go to the next step. I have no money right now. Cut off the big toe on
my right foot. Or whatever your next step is. Just do it. I
have no money right now. Goodbye." Voice was kept at a firm
range without any rage. I have been slipping back into the people-pleasing modality style. Don't do it. But the book
and save your life, your money, your sanity. Thank You.

As a beginner in the art of pulled sugar I found this instructional book very helpful. It goes into the basics of pulling sugar without getting boring. However, I also took a (short) class with an experienced teacher so much of the book did make sense to me. Also of interest is their catalog in the back of the book from which one can buy equipment needed for beginners plus all sorts of other neat equipment. I think this book is a great addition to my sugar pulling library and I recommend it.

The old idea's of woodburning has been replaced with a new creative art! This book teaches, demention, shading and texture. The lessons are easy to follow step by step and the examples pictures are breathtaking. Anyone looking for a book to learn this art should consider getting this one, I recommend it highly.

I bought this book when it first came out. I tried reading it, was (too) quick to call it 'trite' and gave it away. Later my boyfriend gave me a copy (not knowing that I'd tried it before) so I had to slog through it. I am so very glad I did. Ms. DeWolfe has a unique style of writing that must be understood before you will truely enjoy the book. She has a wit and charm that is backed by such sincerity that few designers today could pull this level of writing off. The book will make you want to find more by or about this stylishly pragmatic decorator

what a joy.......2004-05-30

Elsie De Wolfe is acknowleged as the first woman to make a fortune as a decorator and can be called the first life style maven of the 20th century. Her opinions on home decor were eagerly seized upon by millions of aspirational women around the country. She wrote The House in Good Taste 90 years ago but it's just as fresh and suitable now as it was then.

I can't bring myself to agree with her on patchwork quilts, lace curtains or rocking chairs but she's absolutely correct in her advice on wallpaper, paint and apartments. It's amazing how much this delightful and informative book still has to teach us.

This is an interesting, engaging entry point into the analysis of visuals as communicative, or rhetorical, devices. Even ten years later, much of Kress and van Leeuwen's book is still relevant and easily extrapolated into the digital media. It provides, as a colleague of mine said, a useful toolbox for any critic.

Tonya's book, BeautyQuest, was impossible to put down. Her journey from self-involved model to self-sacrificial minister's wife and mom was fascinating, well-written, and inspiring. And her advice about beauty and self-image is heartfelt and genuine, obviously stemming from experience with the low self-esteem and weight issues associated with many people in the modeling world. Buy this book for yourself, or for a young lady who has stars in her eyes about the fashion industry. I highly recommend it!

Beauty Quest was fun to read! Tonya told lots of exciting stories about the good, bad and ugly world of modeling. The book was inspiring, informative, and courageous.
