Book Description

When we first meet him, Chappie is a punked-out teenager living with his mother and abusive stepfather in an upstate New York trailer park. During this time, he slips into drugs and petty crime. Rejected by his parents, out of school and in trouble with the police, he claims for himself a new identity as a permanent outsider; he gets a crossed-bones tattoo on his arm, and takes the name "Bone."

He finds dangerous refuge with a group of biker-thieves, and then hides in the boarded-up summer house of a professor and his wife. He finally settles in an abandoned schoolbus with Rose, a child he rescues from a fast-talking pedophile. There Bone meets I-Man, an exiled Rastafarian, and together they begin a second adventure that takes the reader from Middle America to the ganja-growing mountains of Jamaica. It is an amazing journey of self-discovery through a world of magic, violence, betrayal and redemption.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-05-29

I read this on the recommendation of a friend, and couldn't put it down. It was simultaneously funny and heartbreaking. Written in a believable and unique voice. Very glad I picked this up. I'm off to check out other Russell Banks reads.

5 out of 5 stars A modern Huck.......2006-11-19

When I started reading, I thought I'd made a mistake in my purchase because the life the 13 year old hero was leading was miserable and sordid, a topic I find very sad. As I read on, however, I realized what was going on. Even more than Holden Caulfield, who is himself, I think, out of touch with himself, Huckleberry Finn is the hero's ancestor. This isn't a shallow rehash of the original Huck story, though, but what Huck would be like in twenty-first century America, in a corrupt layer of it that is hard for a child to escape. Holden is sad, but Huck and Bone have a naive sterling core that forces you to understand why it may sometimes be good to do the wrong things and go to the wrong places.

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-08-30

Wow... this book is unbelievable. I really liked it. It was so easy to read. Written on a teenage level. It is bad. It is just hrd to belieave what this kid Chappie aka Bone does. His adolescent life is crazy and hectic. I dont know how anybody could survive that. it was really interesting and it made me feel really bad for Chappie. His life is so messed up. It is also interesting. This is one of these books that keeps you reading because you desperately want to see what happens next. It is amazing and everybody should read it

5 out of 5 stars Rule of the Bone is Fantastic.......2006-06-30

I found this book in my school library missorted and looking a little battered. I checked it out and since the first page I couldn't put it down!
It starts off well and doesn't lose momentum. Filled with a sad story of a runaway teen eventually finding his way to Jamaica to see his biological father after being kicked out of his home by his moms new boyfriend.
He gets caught up in drugs, stealing and everything imaginable! It's a book you wont be able to put down, so buy it and create some spare time. It wont let you down!

3 out of 5 stars For the english classroom........2006-06-01

The character Chappie, better known as Bone, is a teenage boy that lives a precarious life for a fourteen year old. In a new and refreshing way Rule of the Bone, written by Russell Banks, is able to usher in a new wave of modern day novels. This story is set in the 90's which is closer to the current teenage faction and is written in such a way that it is much easier to read and understand than many other novels. Many novels that we read in English classes today are great, classic pieces of literature that contain some of the most important ideologies and stories known to mankind. These books must fit a basic criterion; the novel reveals a lesson, and implements points of view that are worthy of being studied. These novels must also make provocative statements and last but not least, these novels may or may not be applicable to oneself, society or world. Although this old criteria is mainly set for books written in the distant past, Rule of the Bone is able to meet these standards, but conveys more up to date thoughts on the old ideologies.
Throughout the novel Bone tells his own views on life, people, ideas and random little things that a teenage boy might think about or do. Some of Bone's thoughts are those of a typical teenage boy, but many of his thoughts are somewhat more complex. As one reads his words, one may forget that this character is merely fourteen years old. Bone's adventures lead him to make mistakes which he may or may not learn from. But whether or not Bone learns the lesson the reader is able to take away something from it. For example, as a fourteen year old boy, Bone has an uncanny ability to analyze situations, people, objects and ideas,

I didn't know what was happening at the time but suddenly it was like I'm
looking down this tunnel at the Canadian guy and the little girl, especially
the little girl who I was really worried about now, like some terrible thing
was about to happen to her and she couldn't see it coming but I could. I
wanted to tell her something important about people but I didn't want her
to have to know it yet, she was too young still (Banks 29).

When reading Rule of the Bone, the reader may find that Bone is only an immature kid that breaks the rules and lives vicariously, but the reader will also realize that Bone has a lot of maturity when it comes to certain things and situations. It seems that Bone has wisdom beyond his years which not many people around him can see.
A good novel for English class makes provocative statements and displays actions that make the reader think. There will probably be statements and actions that have no meaning behind them, but a good English class novel is able to put meaning behind the most inane ideas. Bone encounters many provocative events in the novel and does many intriguing thing as well,
"...holding the gun with two hands... I fired at the plate-glass window in
front of me...I fired again. The third shot was the one that did it, killed the
window so to speak and the whole thing shattered...it was beautiful to
see...I put the gun on the windowsill and cupped my hands around my
mouth and like I was a lone wolf howling at the moon I hollered..."
(Banks 133).

Killing the window and viewing its beauty is a disturbing image that may challenge the reader to think why Bone took these actions and viewed it the way he did. What else might he do next? What is Bone actually capable of doing with a gun?
A novel for an English class cannot be read without taking a part of it and applying it to ones life. Without application, a novel is useless in the class room. All readers will be able to take something away from Rule of the Bone. The realistic characters and comfortable pacing will allow the reader to become even more engaged in this novel than any other book. Whether it be selling or smoking weed or traveling to Jamaica, anyone who picks up this book will feel some kind of connection to it. Who wouldn't want to go to Jamaica? A place where it's warm, tropical, has sandy beaches, clear blue waters and friendly locals.
Overall, Rule of the Bone fits the criteria for a good book to read in English class. I recommend that students read this book, either for the class or for a good read. Although the novel is quite lengthy, the writing, flow and great story will generally help the time go by quickly. Rule of the Bone's diverse range of qualities and characteristics will provide good material to be discussed in the class room. More importantly, the novel contains updated versions of old ideals which will help students learn and comprehend those important ideologies.

          5 out of 5 stars Engaging Mystery.......2006-03-24

What a fun book! This is the second Faith Fairchild mystery I've read, and boy, what a great read! It's a book that the reader wants to take their time with, savor the words and the situations. This is a must series for Mystery lovers, both men and women!

          2 out of 5 stars product placement?.......2005-05-25

This is a fairly mediocre mystery novel in a series I've always found enjoyable if not memorable. But this one has something I'd not previously seen in any book, though I've heard it is a new trend.
Apparently the author isn't making enough money from book sales and has resorted to product placement. The frequent mentions of Walmart might have been overlooked, but the laudatory paragraphs advertising Home Depot in the middle of the book are startlingly obvious and strain credibility. (Good service? Not in my experience.) At any rate, advertising seeping into books is a terrible idea. Let's hope it doesn't catch on.

1 out of 5 stars Narrow Vision, Boring Book.......2004-06-08

I guess I don't much care for Faith Fairchild. It got a little tiresome to be reminded 10 times how slender the heroine (usually a stand-in for the author) is. Okay, okay, so you're thin! Congratulations! It got even more tiresome that her reaction to anyone with any kind of social concern was to parody or shun them as "lunatics" or "terrorists" (terrorists?!). Faith's vision and concern never extends beyond her family, except for helping out with the Concord Players (sorry, Sanpere Players). She's as eager as the "ecoterrorists" to pull up the drawbridge and let no one else settle in Sanpere, yet doesn't recognize her own hypocrisy. Her view of life was summed up, for me, in her belief that her family was entitled to first refusal on a plot of land owned by someone else, destined to be sold to someone else, simply because her family enjoyed looking at it. This was my first Faith Fairchild mystery: I don't plan to bother with another.

          3 out of 5 stars Mostly pleasant slow-moving story.......2003-10-09

Faith Fairchild arrives in Sampere Island, Maine only to find that the summer house is incomplete, that a Romeo and Juliet scenerio is being carried out in the town even as villagers rehearse the play, and that eco-terrorists are battling developers for the future of this once pristine, but now highly priced town. Faith involves herself with the play and suffers mixed feelings about the eco-terrorists. While she agrees that huge mansions mar the beauty of the island and also cut off beaches from the ordinary citizens, surely fires and destruction are not the way to achieve them. When she stumbles across a body near the abandoned lighthouse, though, things start looking serious. Although the death is certainly accidental--isn't it?

Author Katherine Hall Page immerses the reader in the details of Faith's life--her cooking, caring for her two children, and her joy in discovering paint chips at Home Depot. The story moves forward at an unhurried pace, as Faith uses her connections to the Island's grapevine to discover the secrets so many Islanders hide.

THE BODY IN THE LIGHTHOUSE is a short quick read. It didn't grip me, and I found Faith to be not especially interesting as a character, but Page's writing is solid and her insights into a changing era on an island transitioning from fishing to resort.

2 out of 5 stars glacially slow until near the end.......2003-07-24

There are only two reasons to stick with this slow-moving story to its end: (1)you enjoy reading page after page of household and shopping trivia about upper middle class families who can afford vacation homes, or (2) you're curious to see if any real action ever takes place. There is no tension in the first half of the book; no suspense, no real mystery. The action is concentrated at the end. The author employs a tactic used too often in female-centered mysteries; the murderer behaves like a gentleman the first time the protagonist gets too nosy, bopping her on the head but then delivering her unconscious body to her home. That behavior truly requires suspension of disbelief. Male readers in particular are likely to find the story terminally boring.

            Book Description

Rune Ayanokouji lives a life less ordinary with a "mad" scientist for a grandfather and mysterious humanoid robots popping up around town. It turns out there's an alien plot to take over the world, but there seems to be a set of aliens with a different agenda in mind. With a little unexpected help, Rune and her friends are able to fight these aliens on equal ground. But with the fate of Earth at stake, who can Rune really trust?

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars SPACE QUEEN MUST AWAKE.......2007-01-15

Rune Ayanokuji is an 8th grader with a destiny. Well, that's what her mad scientist grandfather is always telling her. He claims that she is the "Space Queen", a goddess like figure that once ruled over the entire universe, protecting us from evil. Rune is not inclined to believe him and is especially uncomfortable with the fact that Gramps undresses her every night while she's asleep and puts a Space Queen costume on her! He seems to have quite a fetish for making these costumes. He also constantly warns her of the danger of an emminent alien invasion. Their first scouts are already among us and are using super-powered body suits to track down coded information they need to start the invasion. Rune too has a suit called "Veena Alpha" that she uses but she has not awakened to her full Space Queen power yet. There are other forces involved in the battle for Earth, including the mysterious "Betamax", but Rune doesn't know
whose side they're on. If Rune can't become the Space Queen, then the Earth just might be doomed!

This is probably the worst manga I've ever read. If there was a rating less than one star, I would have given it. When one of the power suited fighters was referred to as Betamax, the name of the old videotape format, it was pretty much over at that point. EVERY single character and plot device in this book are manga stereotypes that have become old and rickety. Rune has a fortune-telling occultist friend, a cute little stupid mascot blob that only says "cha!", a guy in the form of a girl, girl with a mysterious destiny that can transform into a magical being, mecha body suits, alien invasion, "mua haa hah hah" laughing Dr. Evil villains, love triangles, and mad scientist relatives. How threatening can aliens be when the numbers they need to bring their evil plans to fruitition are hidden in the bar codes of such ordinary items as candy bars! Akiyama used to be in Clamp and you can tell that they didn't lose anything when she left. Her art is amateurish with the characters sometimes having ill-defined proportions. But it is in her ideas and storytelling that Hyper Rune suffers. Everything is generalized and vague with no real substance or explanations of what is going on. Horrible volume.

            3 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork..........2004-12-29

I could tell Akiyama-san was in CLAMP just by looking at the cover. I bought the first volume, and rushed home to read it.
I became quite confused at what was happening, so much that I had to put the book down and start over again.
Akiyama-san should have set this tale up differently, and with more character differences. The mechs all look alike, so during the fight scenes ( which practically *were* the book ) I couldn't tell which side was which!
If you have much greater patience than I, I reccomend this book, if only for the artwork.

            3 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-12-23

Well, in hyper rune,Rune is the space queen which is the savior of the universe it is similar to the main character of Sailor Moon in Usagi being the Neo Queen Serenity/Sailor Moon/Sailor Cosmos.
But I find Emperor Gald creepy but also handsome I recommend Hyper Rune because it is so interesting that i want to buy more volumes.

            3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2004-12-07

Hyper Rune is a manga by Akiyama Tamayo, a member of the well-known group CLAMP. This series follows the life of a girl, Rune, who as we are told in the beginning is the Space Queen who protects the universe.

In volume one, we meet Rune who is working as a costumed superhero for her eccentric and slightly perverse grandfather who follows her and changes her costumes throughout the majority of the manga. Outside of telling Rune that she is the Space Queen, the grandfather only seems to serve as her tailor, working on costumes he feels will best suit a queen.

Meanwhile, Rune is fighting a series of invaders who have unexpectedly come to her city. She is accompanied by outside aliens, also in costume, who have come to stop the plans of these invaders. And, of course, as in any shojo series, there are pretty boys. These boys are twins, despite their different hair and attitudes, and both happen to fight against the invaders. Their father was at some point a friend and co-worker of Rune's grandfather, and Rune is well-acquainted with the twins.

Together, they begin to discover more keys to the mystery of the Space Queen. The enemies are closer than ever before (their school) and Rune and the twins have found that they carry the same mark on their arms.

Overall, this volume was incredibly fast. There isn't much to like or dislike about Rune, she's simply there. Immediately, there is no mystery as to who is the Space Queen, nor is there mystery as to who her alien companions are. The grandfather's constant attempts to make costumes for Rune and put them on her whenever she isn't looking, though eccentric, isn't particularly endearing- it's just creepy. After all, can you imagine your grandfather chasing your around to chase you into skimpy futuristic clothing? I could imagine it, I just don't want to.

The story, as I said before, seems rushed. It seems that the major mystery already unfolded within the first few pages 'who is the Space Queen,' or at least it seemed to be the major point of the volume because everything else seemed to be costume changes and short battles.

Recently, I bought Mouryou Kiden- another series by Akiyama. If anything, save the money you might spend on Hyper Rune and buy Mouryou Kiden. I'm not saying that Hyper Rune is without it's good moments- the twins seem to be interesting characters, especially because they also carry the mark of the Space Queen, but Akiyama's other series, on whole, seems to have more substance.

5 out of 5 stars Children finally come with a manual on how to raise them!.......2000-02-16

I am a parent of 3 teen-age+ children - 2 pre-teen stepchildren and have managed a pre-school program (57 children) for the past 15 years. This is the first method of discipline in the new age that is useful not only for teachers and parents but also for our children. If everyone were to apply R. Morrish's intelligent and common sense methods our future generations would be our pride instead of our sorrow. Our children will benefit greatly from this method of growing up and I will be using it extensively in both my home and my pre-school. Thank you Ronald it is about time we "raised" our children with real workable methods. Parents should be given this book the day they have their first child.

If you are looking for a how to guide for disciplining children at home or in the classroom, this is the book to read. Simple, common sense suggestions to help teach children the value of respect, reason for rules etc...

5 out of 5 stars Great Book On Discipline.......1999-04-23

As reviewed by Marjan Glavac for the Busy Educator's Newsletter

Ron Morrish, author of "Secrets of Discipline 12 Keys for raising responsible children" has been an educator and behaviour specialist since 1972. His workshops and presentations have helped countless parents and teachers improve their skills for raising responsible children.

Ron starts out with a very simple question: What has happened to discipline? Could television and the movies have such a negative impact on our children? Many people think so. Others believe that social issues are to blame, including poverty, abuse and the breakdown of the family unit. Research says that every one of these concerns plays a significant role. That's not a surprise.

The only real surprise, according to Morrish, is that no one is investigating the most obvious source of problems. Many of the problems with discipline lie within discipline itself. Many of the strategies that we presently use to raise our children will not give us the kind of children we want.

I visited with Ron in his home for over 3 hours. While there, his 6 year old daughter kept peeking through the doorway to see who her dad was talking to. Ron invited her into the room and introduced us. She then sat on his lap, and listened attentively as we both continued our conversation. There firsthand, I saw that Ron's approach to discipline really works. He is one speaker and author who "walks his talk".

5 out of 5 stars A stunning intro to Italian cuisine!.......2005-07-12

Sometimes a main dish can be very intimidating, especially when using ingrediants and techniques you aren't used to. This book is perfect for an introduction to authentic Italian cuisine.

The dishes are divided by season (the author states that vegetables are best when in season). Each offers a few different recipes with each vegetable, ranging from bell peppers to leeks. All of them look amazing, can't wait to try them all. The best is that they are vesatile enough to work for everyday dinners or special occasions.

Another thing worth mentioning: the photography in this book is worth the purchase price alone (as of now, the purchase price is around $6, you can't beat that with a stick). Beautiful rustic dishes, sprawling landscapes. Absolutely beautiful.

Worth every penny and then some!

            5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2003-10-06

This book should be scattered throughout the entire bookstore. It belongs in the travel, photography, history and cookbook sections. Every single page drips with sensuous photographs of gorgeous places and beautiful food. The recipes are accessible and easy to prepare. The way Ms Simon describes the food, preparation and suggestions for serving it are mouth watering. My partner made the vegetable tart the other night and it was fantastic. He wasn't crazy about peeling the asparagus, but admitted that it was certainly worth it. Coming up with inventive, delicious side dishes is always a challenge. Finally, that challenge has been met. I can't wait to try everything in the book, even the eggplant.

2 out of 5 stars Great if you want to buy stock in Aqua products.......2007-03-16

Gary Lord is a fantastic artist, but this book is far from great. While his introduction to this book encourages the reader to experiment with combining techniques, you are limited, according to his instructions, with products in the Aqua Finishing Solutions line. These products, though excellent, are more expensive than the same products that can be found at any paint or hobby store. Unless the reader is familiar with the use of faux finishing products or has taken one of Mr. Lord's classes (as one lucky reviewer had the opportunity to do), this is not a book for those who wish to learn the basics of the art of faux finishing.
Some other of Mr. Lord's books at least offer alternatives to the professional line of Aqua products that he uses exclusively in this book. Perhaps Mr. Lord uses these products daily, and he can afford to purchase expensive tints that he will use for additional projects, but the average home-users will end up with unused portions of product that they will have purchased at a premium, especially if they wish to experiment with colors.
In addition, these products are not easily found; I lived in a small town that was miles from the nearest supplier, and the only way to order the products on-line was to pay a hefty shipping fee! My local paint store, on the other hand, had plenty of Mr. Lord's counterparts' books' suggested supplies, such as basic untinted glazes, drywall compound, and interior house paint!
Another critique that I would have of this book is that the majority of the finishes have that heavy, thickly applied look of some faux finishes. There are only two or three lighter applications, and many of the finishes are heavily textured (with a dimensional product), which leave the user with finishes that will have to be scraped off the wall to get rid of them when the novelty factor is gone. The beauty of other finishing books are that they teach the reader how to do a variety of classical finishes. The finishes in "It's Faux Easy" are like sponge painting in the 80's: they will be outdated in just a few years. Most are much too trendy.
If you, the reader, wish to learn how to do limited finishes that use extra-expensive and hard-to-find products to complete them, that result in popular-today-gone-tomorrow wall treatments, and that leave you with a cupboard full of products that you will likely never use again, than this is the book for you! If you really wish to learn the art of faux finishing, try Pierre Finkelstein's "The Art of Faux." If you are not interested in artistry, but just wish to beautify your home, try the less expensive alternatives such as Linda Sheldon's "Decorative Paint and Faux Finishes" or Gail McCauley's "50 Ways to Paint a Wall". Many of these and other books also instruct the user on how to choose the best finish for their application, how to choose color, and how to experiment with color using easily and inexpensively purchased craft paint.
There are a treasure trove of great faux finishing books out there. Choose the one that is right for you! This one was not for me.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome artist.......2007-02-11

Gary Lord is a great faux painter/artist. I attended his class at his studio in Cincinnati and he does hands on teach you how to do alot of the techniques in this book. I would highly recommend this book as it has alot of visual aids to help you learn at home but as a companion to the book--go to his class! The techniques in the book are all doable by anyone who can paint and gives alot of different styles of faux painting. All of it is still in style now and yet I had never seen most of these types of painting techniques before. He shows a close up of the finished work as well as distant because photography can be tricky in the coloring of some of the treatments. You can sometimes catch him on some of the DIY type shows on t.v. and this book is available in video form as well. His studio is called Prismatic Painting

5 out of 5 stars Great Faux Book.......2005-12-12

This book contains some very interesting faux techniques. The finishes require various skill levels from beginner to advanced. Many use various products on the market, i.e. Lusterstone and Aqua products. The more complex projects must be done over several days to allow time for base coats, textures, Lusterstone, etc to dry. The pictures are gorgeous. The steps are clear and easy to understand.

Each project starts with a small photo closeup of the finish, then a large photo of a room or wall using the technique. There is a materials list and a color palette for each project. The color palette indicates the name and shows a color swatch of the actual colors used. There are also sidebars included for each project that have Pro Tips. There are full-color photos throughout this beautiful book and some of the treatments are some I have never seen before. I'm a beginner so that's probably not saying much. :-)

There are several projects that actually apply the technique to paper. The techniques were pretty neat, but all I could think about was I would have to repeatedly apply the technique on paper first and THEN I would also have to hang the wallpaper or hire someone to apply it. Now, if they can only find a way to do those techniques directly onto the wall it would deserve the full 5 star. For now, I really think it warrants a 4 1/2 star rating.

              Book Description

This is a comprehensive collection of the best contemporary CD cover designs, featuring many previously unpublished examples from the cutting edge.

Both design professionals and music lovers will find inspiration from the varied and exciting work featured: from well-known designers like Stefan Sagmeister (Lou Reed and many others) Malcolm Garrett (Buzzcocks) and Peter Saville (Joy Division, New Order) to Tomato (Underworld), Farrow (The Pet Shop Boys), and lesser-known names and in-house teams (such as the RCS designers who worked with the The Strokes and the Foo Fighters) who have used this medium as a widely disseminated platform for experimentation and free expression.

In addition to traditional graphic elements of album cover art -- image, illustration, typography -- CD Art explores experimentation unique to the CD format: from handmade and unusual packaging and materials to textures, interactive designs and marketing incentives. It shows how designers exploit the two and three dimensional qualities of CD packaging to create highly collectible and unique objects that are displayed, handled, interrogated for information, explored for meaning and venerated by fans.

Anyone interested in this book should take a look at the companion book, DVD Art, also by Charlotte Rivers.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring.......2006-04-20

Great book. A big variety of examples. This book is not about the images which you can on a regular cd sleeves. You won't find here any covers of gangster-rap grills close-up and other bs. This book is about a different way to approach a cd packaging, new ways of expressing the product (music) through the actual cd "cases". Highly recommend for a personal library.
plus don't forget to check out the actual bands and music, most of it is a-rated.

You won't believe the amount of Harassment That Victoria Beckham,
endured, she is so young and talented.
The book is about her rise to fame and marriage etc.

There are some shocking photos in this book but you get a good idea of who she really is.
