Introducing us to Lucas Davenport, cop and video games creator, "Rules of Prey" is a thrill ride from start to finish. Taking us back and forth from the mind of maddog - a serial killer with a thing for small, dark-haired woman and a penchant for leaving notes with rules for serial killers to follow with his victims' bodies - to Davenport's attempts to track the maddog down, this excellent police procedural is sure to please anyone who likes a good thriller.
Set in the Mini-Apple (Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN), with the sky-ways in the downtown areas and the narrow twisting streets in downtown St. Paul, this book introduces us to many of the players we will see in upcoming books, such as Elle (or Sister Mary Joseph - an old friend of Lucas', a nun and a psychologist), Sloan, Chief Daniels, and Jennifer Carey - just to name a few.
A great book and a great beginning to a great series - don't miss this one!

The first of Sandford's "Prey" series, and still one of his best in my opinion. Serial murderer on the loose, cops gradually closing in, suspenseful chase..a final battle, all the usual elements of a classic page-turner done by a consummate yarn master.

I started reading this series a few years ago. I started about half way through the series and wound up buying all the previous books. I love how John Sandford is able to bring humr into a book about hunting serial killers. It is a guilty fun read.

In this first book of an ongoing series we meet detective Lucas Davenport. Lucas is quite rough around the edges and a lot "bad boy". Lucas is in pursuit of a serial killer known only as maddog. Fast paced with writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this is a great beginning to what I hope will be a great series!

If you want a book that will you can't put down, well then this is the one for you. I have all the Prey novels and to date I can trully say that they have been the best reads ever. Davenport is one hell of a cop, and delivers justice in the best two fisted way I've come to read. The Criminals are dark and sinister, and I know these three stories will keep the reader rivited till the end and still wanting more. I know I did, and can't wait for the next one.

I have read all of the Prey series and am a really big fan. I wasn't always a person who does alot of recreational reading . But once i started the Prey series I can't stop I have read them all and am ready for his next release. I still think my favorite was Rules of Prey.
The most evil villains I have ever read........1998-08-22
I have read five of the "Prey" novels so far, including these three stories. Obviously, there is something about them that I find attractive, but in retrospect, I cannot honestly say what. The writing style is pleasant, but not taxing, and draws you along. The villains are the most evil people that I have ever read about, and always come to the same end. The number of psychos inhabiting John Sandford's Midwest is truly frightening, yet doesn't seem to surprise the locals. These books are the "sitcom-lites" of literature, but easy and quick to read.
Three great mystery books in one........1997-04-07
Sandford is a master at weaving this type of story. He keeps you reading through all three novels like it was one story. It was nice to see a author finally pick the great state of Minnesota for a setting

The Third Book in an Excellent Series.......2006-12-02
Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.
After reading the first book in the series, I avidly sought out all the other books by Edward Marston and not a single one has ever disappointed me. They are about a period of history that I love. His Elizabethan theatre series of books were wonderful and he has continued them through from 1988 to 2006. The Domesday series is also a great series and this is the second book in the series.
The Domesday series is about a period in England's history shortly after the Norman conquest , during the reign of William the Conqueror. It was King William himself who called for an `inventory' to assess taxes and survey landholdings. This inventory was called the Domesday book and was a tremendous undertaking, but one that brought stability to England. Edward Marston's Domesday novels are based upon actual entries in the Domesday Book.
Archenfield in Herefordshire is to all intents and purposes a no-man's-land that acts as a buffer between Norman controlled England and the Welsh border. Ralph Delchard and his lawyer associate and friend Gervase Bret arrive for what should be one of their more straightforward assignments for the crown. To settle conflicting claims for ownership of land, but they are shocked to discover the murder of a principal witness, burned alive in his own home. Documents that are essential to the land claim are thought to have been lost in the fire. While trying to sort out the land dispute the pair are drawn into a search for a killer . . .

Edward Marston pens enthralling mysteries during an exciting and intersting time of history, the Norman Conquest of England and the ensuing "Domesday Book" I am only sorry to discover him when all his books are not readily available.
He provides incites regarding the relationships of Normans, Saxsons and Welsh for the history buff. For those who love mysteries he provides an interesting group of detectives a knight - Ralph, a lawyer Gervase, Canon Hubert and Brother Simon. Marston deftly combines mystery, action and romance in a historical setting.

Best of the series so far. Ralph and Gervase are two of the most full bodied dectives since Leaphorn and Chee. Red Herrings abound as they try to find out who killed a Saxon with claims to contested land. Golde adds a much needed twist to the foursome trying to settle land claims for King William.
A thoroughly engaging book........1997-05-19
Two civil servants ride into 11th-century Wales on routine business and find themselves confronted with a diabolical murder. In a country chafing under Norman domination, murder turns out to be the least of their worries.
This skillful blend of mystery and action (and romance) held my attention so thoroughly that I finished it in one sitting. Fans of Peters' Brother Cadfael should find themselves at home with Marston's Delchard and Gervase

This is unique cookbook. Not only its unique recipe collection but its illustrations as well.
The premise is about fire. Fire in the heat of the food, fire in the creativity of the chefs, fire that almost burned the restaurant down via a mop saved by a female employee.
From beginning to end this is out of ordinary cookbook.
Check out recipes like: Texas Hill Country Wild Game Paella (featuring duck and rabbit); Chicken Fired Antelope with a Red Eye Gravy; American Bison Stuffed with a Blackened Turkey Tenderloin; Iced Passion Fruit and Raspberry Soup topped with a Rain Forest Ceviche; Cocunut Curry Soup with Smoked Duck; Buffalo Quail Riding Jalapeno Cheese Gritsl Roger's Margarita Passion Fruit Tart Pie.

My favorite cookbook.......2006-07-19
Anybody that sifts through this book will quickly see that it isn't your everyday average cookbook with simple ingredients, but that is what makes this so amazing. Highly recommended for people interested in unique techniques, ingredients, combinations, and bold flavors. A great book that is well put together, contains plenty of alternatives and recommendations for substituting hard to find ingredients and is well illustrated. Perfect for an adventurous cook and tons of fun to read through and prepare recipes from.
A twist, but no more.......2005-12-21
I found this book to be a bit of a disappointment. For the record, I love their original book Fired Up! and use many of the methods described and recipes therein. This new cookbook seems more focused on tweaks to the recipes in the first book and overly elaborate new recipes. Buy their first book and you will have no regrets.

Agree or Disagree .. it is a page turner.......2007-09-02
I discovered this book quite by accident years ago. I was in a used bookstore for a long time, and eventually I shyly inquired about a Limited Editions Club book. It would have been my first purchase of a used book that was nicer - and more expensive - than a new book. The shop owner helped me, and then suggested that I might get a kick of this book. Much like another reviewer, I devoured it in less than 24 hours.
Sometimes, I felt the authors were making me more comfortable in a world new to me. At other times, I felt I was being made fun of, for loving old books, and my willingness to consider paying a lot of money for them. To disagree with another review, I don't think it was mean spirited, but rather the authors candidly reveal their emotions as they evolved during the narrative. Sometimes they felt truly excited, and sometimes they felt a little embarrassed and obsessed. Even scared - as when they first bid in an auction. All book lovers have friends that don't understand the appeal. I love the book because I often feel alone in alternating between those same emotions. Even when the authors came on a little strong, and I wanted to come to the defense of some of the characters, I kept reading. The book pulls you in, even when you might disagree.
A love story for bibliophiles!.......2007-04-06
I first read this book a decade ago, and have re-read it many times since, that's the appeal of this book, especially if you're a book lover or book collector. Reading the Goldstones' adventures as they journey through the marvelous world of antiquarian, rare & used books, I got the feeling that I was going along with them on their journeys, and being a book collector myself, truly empathised with their vacillations on whether to purchase a book or not. In the end, it is a love story: between two people who are brought even closer by their love of books, and for the love of collecting books. Its a warm, funny, and witty book. I look forward to re-reading this book for many more years to come!

In "Used and Rare", the Goldstones are a kindred spirit. Reading along with their discovery of the wonders of the used book and the stores you experience in the pursuit of their acquisition was an experience in self actualization.
With a simple rule about limiting the value of gift exchanges, husband and wife Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone started their used book adventure with simple purchases such as a definitive edition of Tolstoy's War and Peace that features fold-out color illustrations and maps acquired for a mere $10; from there, the Goldstones embark on a journey of discovery and book worship that leads to large expenditures of hundreds of dollars of single volumes. This book is a loving tribute to those of us with a disease - bibliophilia; bibliophilia is the unhealthy love of books (unhealthy when they take up too much space, cost a big chunk of our paycheck, are too much work to move, and can cause serious issues in an otherwise loving relationship when only one has the disease).
When I originally read this book more than seven years ago, my love of books had mimicked the journey of discover that the Goldstones relate in this book: finding that awesome used copy of a book that seemed more worthy than the price implied - a bargain! The search for better version of the books I already owned - a paperback isn't good enough, you need the first edition hardcover! Searching for a copy of a book long since read, but not owned - you must own everything that has been read! Reading along with the Goldstones, I was thrilled to read about people just like me!
This is a wonderful travel narrative for the world of books, bookstores, and book lovers.

This is the first book I have picked up and read from start to finish within 24 hours, I was so engrossed. I listen to books on tape usually so I can do more than one thing at a time, but this was recommended by a list serve for book makers and book artists, but was only in hard copy.
What I enjoyed was listening to their growing "obsession" which I have experienced with collecting, their astute analysing of the market after they got the lay of the land, their emotional connections to the books, and their decisions about what part of the used and rare book market they wanted to collect based on type of writing, authors, condition of books, price of books, and even the purchasing experience they liked best.
In the end we collectors all decide for ourselves just what we can collect based on some emotion, and enjoy the thrill of the hunt, whether it is $1 junk or million dollar paintings.
A quick read and a quicker write.......2005-07-09
The number of books written in our society is huge and getting huger. Everyone recognizes that far more books are being written and published than can be read. Why are people so anxious to be authors in such a market? One reason, apparently embraced by the Goldstones, is that it is so EASY to write a book! All you have to do is write down some reminiscences of your experiences. They don't have to be particularly interesting experiences. You don't have to do any research into your subject. If you describe what all the people you encounter are wearing, if you go into details of how you found a babysitter for each trip you took, if you quote verbatim phone calls from relatives and shop keepers (even if they are not interesting or witty), and if you describe the hotel rooms you stayed in, you can finish the book in a couple of weekends! And readers can finish the book in a couple of hours with little harm done.
The book does accurately represent the travails of beginning book collectors, and I recognized some of my own experiences in the stories the authors tell. However, the book does not take the effort to educate readers so that they can skip over common early errors, nor does it attempt to answer many of the questions that the authors themselves raised when they first began collecting. What determines the price of old books? Why are first editions important? Why should Tarzan books cost more than great works of literature? These are good questions that anyone might think of when getting into book collecting, and you will find the questions but not the answers here.
The book is written in a breezy style that is easy to get through, and if you have two hours at an airport to kill, you could do worse than to read it. But by the time you arrive at your destination, you will have likely forgotten most of what you just read, because so much of it is ephemeral details of the authors' own lives, transportation problems, and experiences. If you are really interested in book collecting, it would be wise to read one of the many books that describe what one should look for, how prices are determined, different styles of book collecting, and so on. Fragments of this knowledge are transmitted in this book, but they will leave you with more questions than answers.
To be sure, not every book about book collecting needs to be a font of wisdom. But the entertainment value of the authors' experiences was weak, and did not make up for the absence of useful content.

Designers include: Michael Simon, Joan Kruse Rogers, Cass Daley, Melinda Gray, Kent Kiesey, John Rolland, Nancy Serafini, Meredith Moriarti, Carol Knott, Betsy Best, Robert Bitter, and JZ Knight. Three historic homes are featured as well. Brian D. Coleman, M.D., is a practicing psychiatrist in Seattle, Washington. Brian is a graduate of Stanford University and Chicago Medical School. Also an old house enthusiast, Brian has grown his love for historic restoration into an active second career. He is the author of Classic Cottages (see page 00) and has published two books about his home ("Vintage Victorian Textiles", 2001, Schiffer Publishing; "The Victorian Dining Room", 2002, Schiffer Publishing). Brian divides his time between New York, where he maintains an apartment, and Seattle where he lives in a unique Victorian. Dan Mayers is a New York-based photographer whose work appears regularly in Country Decorating magazine's Cottage Style, Country Collectibles and Country Victorian as well as Old House Interiors. His work has been included in such books as the Ultimate Kitchen and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

I love Scalamandre..however the book is soooo dated. Most pictures of rooms are in red and gold - THERE ARE
other colors! The photography was beautiful. Since decorating is a passion for me, I felt I should let you know this is OLD NEWS!! Decorations from the 60's and 70's.. Was hoping for something more
atuned to today. I was most disappointed.

This is one of the most beautiful books on Interior Design. It does not have a lot of type to clutter the beautiful photos. It will remain an historical account of an historic company that exposes beautiful fabrics to a discerning clientele.It should be in everyone's library......

The beautiful box holding the cards is a treasure and beautifully lined with the same design as the cards you first see when you open the box. There are four sets of cards with garden designs.
There are two sets with a creamy background and then red or blue artwork detailing watering cans, chairs, sun dials, planters, gardening tools and birdhouses. A cherry red card has a lovely fabric design and a pastoral scene of gathering fruit.
This set of cards would be especially appreciated by your gardening friends. I love the Scalamandre cards and especially the collectible boxes they come in.
