Book Description
Of all the characters in modern Jewish fiction, the most beloved is Tevye, the compassionate, irrepressible, Bible-quoting dairyman from Anatevka, who has been immortalized in the writings of Sholem Aleichem and in acclaimed and award-winning theatrical and film adaptations.
And no Yiddish writer was more beloved than Tevye’s creator, Sholem Rabinovich (1859–1916), the “Jewish Mark Twain,” who wrote under the pen name of Sholem Aleichem. Beautifully translated by Hillel Halkin, here is Sholem Aleichem’s heartwarming and poignant account of Tevye and his daughters, together with the “Railroad Stories,” twenty-one tales that examine human nature and modernity as they are perceived by men and women riding the trains from shtetl to shtetl.
Customer Reviews:
uneven .......2007-04-11
A set of short stories - some lifeless, some fairly amusing. Much to my surprise, I found Aleichem's other stories to be livelier than the Tevye stories. I especially liked some of the stories with surprise twists, such as "It Doesn't Pay To Be Good." (If I told you the twist, it would of course spoil the surprise!)
A look into a long-lost culture.......2007-03-13
What struck me most about these stories, in addition to the sensitive and thoughtful translation and the wonderful Tevye character, is that they don't really depict the long-lost, static, traditional culture of the Eastern European shtetl (Jewish village). By the time Sholem Aleichem wrote these stories, the life of the shtetl was disintegrating. It was a transitional time, when emigration to America, the influence of Western culture, the pull of socialism and other radical movements, and many other forces were already acting upon traditional Judaism. Tevye, whose knowledge of Jewish sources is picturesque but not very deep, was one of the most knowledgeable people in his town. That pretty much says it all.
The Tevye stories are unforgettable, the "railroad" stories of more mixed quality. That is why I only gave the book four stars. Still, highly recommended.
Tevye the Dairyman and the Railroad Stories.......2007-01-08
I really enjoyed the entire book! The ones associated with Fiddler on the Roof as well as all the others. These stories gave a more in depth perspective of the Russian Jews and the pogroms that they as well as other targeted Russians had to endure. It showed their incredible strength, faith and sense of community that helped them survive. Thank you for a really good book! History at its best!!!
An especially good translation .......2006-03-16
Hillel Halkin is a master translator. His translation of the Sholem Aleichem stories takes out what might be called a 'corny archaic ' element in some other translations.
Sholem Aleichem's humor and pathos, the non- ending dialogue of his Tevye with God, the Yiddish world of Eastern Europe now lost, the questioning ironic often tender tone, are all here.
Read and enjoy.
Actually, 4.5.......2005-01-11
Picked up this collection after seeing Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway... Very good, especially the Tevye chapters. Typical Eastern-European Yiddish form: mostly serious, often tragic stories written in a humorous, sarcastic tone. Be ware of catch phrases getting stuck in your head... geared towards people with some historic understandind shtetl life in Czarist Russia. Deffinately wets your apetite for more Yiddish literature.
p.s. If you're unsure whether you'll enjoy this type of literature, check out "Gimpel the Fool", a short story by I.B. Singer. Its great, and it will give you an idea of what to expect.

Book Description
Of all the characters in modern Jewish fiction, the most beloved is Tevye, the buoyant, ingenious, compassionate, resilient, irrepressible, anxious, philosophical, God-loving, God-fearing, Bible-quoting dairyman whose life embodies the existence of a Jew in Eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. This program presents six of the eight Tevye stories, which span the period from 1894 to 1914. It includes Today's Children, Hodl, Chava and Lekh Lekho-the four tales that provided the genesis for the enchanting, enduring musical Fiddler on the Roof-in addition to Tevye Strikes It Rich and Tevye Blows a Small Fortune.Sholem Aleichem brought to his writing an amazing mixture of giddy energy, a recklessness of language and emotion, and a dizzying sweep of wildly funny and wrenchingly painful scenes. The tales of Tevye's adventures, pleasures and sorrows, as told in this brilliant reading by Theodore Bikel--who to millions around the world is Tevye--to vibrant life the simple and joyous, yet precarious and sometimes outright dangerous, history of Russian Jewry during a time of sweeping historical, familial and religious change.

TEVYE THE DAIRYMAN LIVES NOW AND FOREVER!!!!.......2004-09-14
When you mention the name "Tevye", the automatic response is FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, right? However, amazing to say, not many people realize that the character of Anatevka's beloved milkman and self-proclaimed philospher/expounder of the Good Book was created by Sholem Aleichem in a series of stories that formed the basis for the immortal musical. Not only are those stories available now in a new English translation by Hillel Halkin, but they're read by Theodore Bikel who played "Tevye" on Broadway and who ranks vocally in that role alongside Zero Mostel, Herschel Bernardi and Topol! While singing plays no part in this recording, Mr. Bikel brings both life and emotion to Mr. Aleichem's stories and characters as he literally becomes "Tevye" and tells the stories of Tevye and his family in good times and bad times (and of course the bad times outnumber the good!). I'm delighted that two stories that aren't covered in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF are included in this recording ("Tevye Strikes It Rich" and "Tevye Blows A Small Fortune"), and Mr. Bikel wins the heart of the listener as he tells the stories "Today's Children" (the story of the eldest daughter Tzeitl and the poor tailor Motel), "Hodl", "Chava" and "Lekh-Lekho" (literally "Get Thee Out", the story of Tevye's leaving Anatevka), this last story being even more moving because not only does the reader/listener learn that Golde (Tevye's wife) and Motel (his son-in-law) have died but the story ends on an ambiguous note concerning Chava where the reader/listener must decide the outcome for him/herself.
In short, for any lover of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF or Old Country folklore or even if you've never heard of either FIDDLER ON THE ROOF or the Tevye stories, this recording is a must for any library and Mr. Bikel is absolutely wonderful as our narrator/storyteller! (It makes one wonder how Zero Mostel would have handled such a recording!) Sholem Aleichem would be proud.
Book Description
Savannah Grant once had the reputation for being the wild sister-but no one, not even her twin, knew just how wild Savannah had once been. Now that past has come back to haunt her. Someone is murdering humans in Ripple Creek, and the murders are eerily similar to those she'd witnessed nearly ten years ago. Worse still, the man sent in to help with the investigation is the one man Savannah had hoped never to see again. The man who had taken her trust and her heart and smashed them both. Cade Jones is in Ripple Creek to catch the killer who'd escaped his noose ten years ago. What he doesn't expect to find is the woman who had very nearly caused his death. A woman who knew far more than she'd ever let on. A woman who'd slithered from his grasp as easily as the killer. This time, Cade has every intention of discovering what she knows-and every intention of holding her to the promises she'd made long ago. As the murders continue, it becomes evident that the killer isn't murdering at random, that it's all part of a larger plan-revenge. In order to survive, Savannah finds herself having to trust the one man she'd sworn never to trust again. But can Cade unravel the clues left from the past and the present in time to save them both, or will a killer's need for revenge snatch away their hopes of a future yet again?

beneath a darkening moon.......2007-09-25
an amazing novel as only a few authors can writ, full of intrigue comedy and sex.
Harlequin romance/thriller with werewolves.......2006-08-06
I bought and read Ms. Arthur's "Full Moon Rising" and REALLY enjoyed it. So I went back into the author's works and bought and read "Beneath a Darkening Moon" and "Beneath a Rising Moon" and was very disappointed with both books. Full Moon Rising is far superior to the other two; it shows the author has made a very nice leap of progress in her writing skills in the years between them. I will happily buy and read anything new that the author writes, but won't delve further back into her works.
Good read........2005-01-21
Once upon a time, Cade was an undercover agent infiltrating a werewolf cult who had a brief passion with Savannah, one of the women kept by the cult's leader. Now, they must team up again to find out who is trying to avenge the cult leader's death. As they work together, they find that what they once had is still alive, but romance will have to take a backseat to solving the case and surviving it.
*** If you haven't read the prior book, "Beneath A Rising Moon", there is a good chance you're going to be lost, but not hopelessly so. Aside from the paranormal element, this is a basically realistic book about obsession, religion gone wrong, and the butterfly effects of one's actions. ***

Fine sequel to Beneath a Rising Moon.......2005-01-14
Savannah Grant is the head ranger on the Bitterroot werewolf reservation. There is a serial killer targeting humans on the reservation, so interspecies law enforcement is called in. Unfortunately, the lead investigator Cade Jones, is a man from her distant past. She was involved in what amounted to a cult of werewolves and half breeds connected to a serial killer very much like the present one. Cade was undercover at the time and a very young Savannah thought that she was in love with him. They are very bitter now, but Cade uses the remaining time on an old moon promise to force Savannah to play by his rules to catch a vicious killer.
While not as good as Beneath a Rising Moon(which would be very difficult), I really enjoyed this trip back to the werewolves' world. There is alot of action and very vivid characters as well as a good mystery, also I really enjoyed finding out all of Savannah's secrets, since she hinted at them so much in the previous book. Great Story!!

Probably one of the best non-REH Conan stories.......2003-08-23
There have been a lot of Conan tales written by a large number of different people. I can't say I've read them all (in fact I've stopped reading them) but I can say that of those I've read, this is one of the best, if not the best, of the Howard imitators.
Nyberg manages to capture the energy of Howard's Conan tales, although he doesn't quite manage to produce the same atmosphere. The plot is pretty basic: bad guy captures Conan's wife, Conan sets out to save her.
But Nyberg is so earnest and so obviously has a love for the characters that he manages to overcome any dificiencies in originality.
A few facts about Nyberg and his book (and this is from memory so some of it may be slightly incorrect):
Most people don't realize that Nyberg originally wrote this without any prompting from anyone, he was just a fan who felt compelled to add to the Conan mythos. I believe he originally entitled it "The Return of Conan," but the novel was later incorporated into the Lancer series (which was an attempt to collect and write a complete history of Conan in the sixties and seventies) as "Conan the Avenger."

Well Developed Understanding of the necessary Bridge between Science and Religion.......2007-05-17
Good Metaphysical understanding of life - that it consists of "The one consciousness". And that, all there is anywhere is this one consciousness. That all life interacts instantaneously and non-locally through a mechanism of life and living, difficult to comprehend when understood through the distorting lens of scientific thought and object orientated materialistic living. It underlines that matter is for the most part redundant or better considered as a reflex of thought and arises totally out of conditioning and sedimentations, termed quantum collapse - or "The classical self".
On the otherhand, the past does not need to exist, to the Quantum Self, that is not beholden to the Samskaras of conditioned and congealed thought, to space or time but has access to all that is and all that happens as it happens and which underscores all our creativity and Quantum evolutionary capabilities. Also, good synopsis of the current state of physics and the current belief systems prevailing in the world at present from (i) Behaviorism to (ii) Materialism to (iii)Monistic Idealism , along with their limitations.
Does not go that step further in understanding the metaphysical derivatives of Aspect's experiment, and in realizing that everything communicates instantaneously, only because space does not really fundamentally exist at all - and with it Time - which is just another aspect of the same illusion based on Minkowsky's elucidations! And so - there is no out-there - out there! The realization that everything and ever being is just subjective essence needs to be fully assimilated. A major affront to Science. Hui Neng's understanding that "From the beginning, not a thing is"! would be a further development! along with realizing that the entire seeming objective and object-orientated functionality of the universe is just a reflex of unpurified thought - also ACIM's Statement that "Objects leave not their Source" would help usher in the new metaphysics and the transcendental understanding and awareness needed to propitiate quantum leaps in mankind and the one joined and universal consciousness.
The last section of the book, that deals with yoga and ethics is at best third rate. Reiterates OSHO, Krishnamurti and the basics of yoga! focuses on Eka Rupa and attaining the Eka Grata state in meditation as well as those of Samadhi with objects. Very fundamental but does not capitilize or deliver on the clever, well developed scientific statements that are their precursor earlier in the book.
Oneness of the Universe.......2007-03-19
We are all one consciousness experiencing our reality seperately. Each of us learning and contributing to this universal mind.
I found this book to be very fascinating. Maggie & Amit Gaswami take you on a journey through physics to explain our existance in the universe. Implicitly detailing what science is really telling us about life and living systems, exactly how we are connected and what we can do with this new-found knowledge. I highly recommend this book!
The Self-Aware Universe.......2007-01-10
Very interesting book, a little bit into speculation and religion.
The scientific part was well explained.
The view about the universe changed for me.
I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in quantum mechanics and filosofy...

Simply great!!!.......2006-11-18
This is a wonderful and timely book. It gives a fresh view of science, religion, mind, body, consciousness and the universe, stimulates thinking and makes one really understand that s/he can make a difference!!
I love this book!.......2006-10-25
Goswami merges science and spirituality like no other. You don't need to possess a scientific mind to follow most of his argument. The universe is indeed self-aware and Goswami proves that fact, merging east and west in way that makes perfect sense.
Book Description
It is often said that bread is the stuff of life, but it is high time to forget about store-bought bread and indulge in a little home baking! The Best of Irish Breads and Baking delights in the wonders of home baking by gathering together the best recipes of both traditional and contemporary recipes. Breads and Baking covers all aspects of the baking process, from the very best of breads, bracks, scones, puddings and preserves to their storage, usage, and life span.
An invaluable delight to both professional and novice alike, the author includes a fascinating history of the Irish breadmaking tradition. Recipes range from old favorites, such as Irish brown soda bread, blackberry jelly, Irish tea-cake and Irish whiskey cake to the more unusual treats such as Ballylickey Yummy Cake and Ballymaloe Walnut Meringue.
A very useful aspect of The Best of Irish Breads and Baking will be the "Festive Fares" section which contains recipes which can be used on many festive occasions like Hallowe'en, Christmas, Easter and Irish style Weddings.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent General Manual on Irish Baking. Buy It!.......2006-02-24
`The Best of Irish Breads & Baking' by Georgina Campbell, sponsored by the Irish company, Shamrock Foods, is the third book of Irish baking I have reviewed, and it nicely fits between the areas covered by Tim Allen's `The Ballymaloe Bread Book' and Margaret M. Johnson's `Irish Puddings, Tarts, Crumbles, and Fools'. Before comparing the three books in detail, I'll survey Ms. Campbell's contents.
This is a very nicely sized, relatively inexpensive book, listing at $15 or 15 euros which concentrates, like Ms. Johnson, on recipes from local Irish baking and hospitality establishments.
The chapters, with virtually no surprises, are:
Soda Breads and Scones, confirming once again that THE classic Irish bread is a brown soda bread and not the familiar Irish-American all white flour soda bread. I was pleased to find, however, a recipe for that familiar Irish-American soda bread with many flavorings added. One of the more unusual sections in this chapter is a method for making buttermilk from skimmed milk and yeast. I find immense irony in this method, as yeast is being used to make an ingredient for a yeastless quick bread. It also gives the yogurt method for making buttermilk, but makes no mention of the quick sour milk method or of powdered `instant buttermilk' products.
Hot Off the Griddle covers things which many people may not consider `baking' as they are recipes to be made from batters on top of the stove, including cakes made from batters with oats, potatoes (for boxty), apples, and flour. If you happen to be a big breakfast fan, this chapter may alone be worth the price of admission.
Tea Breads, Bracks, & Buns cover what in the United States would tend to be lumped together as muffins and their allies such as gingerbread and fruit breads.
Yeast Breads explores baking with packaged yeasts, either fresh brewer's yeast or dried yeast packets. One interesting fact in this chapter is that Irish wheat is soft, much like that from the southern United States such as White Lily flour. The explanation for the Irish love of soda bread is not this, but the fact that few Irish households had the kinds of ovens needed for baking yeasted breads. This may not be complete, as the same could probably be said of Italy, one of the capitals of yeasted bread traditions. While this chapter focuses on native Irish recipes, there are a fair number of imports from the Mediterranean using things like onion and garlic in the breads.
Cakes and Biscuits is the chapter which contains the recipes for the kind of seed cakes and biscuits which Bilbo Baggins probably served to Thorin Oakenshield, his band of dwarfs, and Gandalf the wizard in that magical moment at the beginning of the novel, `The Hobbit'. If you are a Tolkien fan, this chapter alone may be worth the book. Note that biscuits, here, is the English sense of biscuits as `cookies' and not what we recognize as, for example, southern buttermilk biscuits, which are much more similar to Irish scones.
Pastry and Puddings involves another English / Irish usage which may be unfamiliar to Americans, as `puddings' here refers primarily to desserts, primarily those made with custards. Oddly, the lion's share of recipes in this chapter are for cakes, pies, and tarts, rather than custard based desserts. There is another fair share of European influence in recipes for strudel (Austrian) and frangipane (French).
Festive Fare is one of my favorite kinds of chapters, as it gives recipes for occasions where you get an excuse to bake something delicious and fattening. I'm especially fond of these Irish dishes, as they contain the mother lode of inspirations for mincemeat pies and fruitcakes. The emphasis here is on Christmas, Easter, and Halloween, our favorite culinary holidays other than Thanksgiving.
If you have room for only one book on Irish baking, especially if you don't have a lot of books on general baking techniques, this is the best of the three books I cite here. Tim Allen's Ballymaloe book ranges far beyond Ireland, because his focus is what is made at the Ballymaloe restaurants for their guests, not what is traditional in Ireland. Thus, he includes a chapter on sourdough plus chapters on major Italian specialties such as pizza. Ms. Campbell does not touch sourdough (using natural yeasts) at all. Since Campbell covers both desserts and bread baking, it is also more general than Johnson's book on desserts. And, Campbell goes into a bit more detail on general baking technique, although not as much as the great bread baking specialists such as Peter Reinhart.
I am especially happy to say all measurements are in both metric and English systems and for things like flour, both weight (lb or grams) and volumetric (cups) units are given. This is another reason to pick this book if you can only have one. Otherwise, all three books have much to offer.
Highly recommended.
really nice cookbook!.......2006-02-01
I used a friend's copy of this book for a specific recipe (whole wheat banana bread). I've tried many of the other recipes and I've not found one I don't like. I HAD to buy my own copy. The food is tasty, appealing and chock full of healthy ingredients. It's nice to find a cookbook with so much variety and great alternatives to grocrey store premade baked item. This is a keeper!!!
Neat Book straight from Ireland!.......2002-03-16
This is NO ripoff. It's the real deal. Straight from the Irish presses and shipped to America. The breads and baked goods are authentic and unbelieveably delicious. I can't praise it enough for its authenticity.
Well worth it!.......2001-02-06
This book is an excellent choice for the person who is interested in authentic Irish baking. There are many variations on the traditional brown bread and all I have tried taste really good. The recipes are easy to follow and a lot come from top guest houses. The "Irish Apple Cake" is wonderful and freezes beautifully. It also has a few Irish American recipes along side the traditional versions. The scones, sweet breads - in fact everything I have baked from this book has been wonderful.

The secret's out: it's scandalously easy to transform plain wooden furniture into objets d'art with a personal flourish. The popularity of the art of decorative painting for furniture has given rise to numerous books on its instruction (such as Painted Furniture Patterns and Painted Wooden Furniture). Add to this growing list Fresh Paint: New Looks for Unfinished Furniture, which combines simplicity of design, layout, and directions with vibrant photos of finished projects. (Note that the focus here is solely on painting new wooden furniture, not antiques or garage-sale finds.)
After a brief but thorough tutorial on tools, materials, and basic priming and painting techniques, author Lane LaFerla lists the necessary materials and tools for each project. Then, in easy-to-follow, numbered sections, the 45 projects unfurl. Many of these projects--which include tables; chests, nightstands, and dressers; benches and stools; bookcases; chairs; and accessories--are suitable for the novice furniture painter and require no more effort than sandpapering, priming, painting, using whatever medium (leaves, napkins, old photos, etc.) adds that special detail to the project, and applying varnish. From these easy steps we get some extremely fanciful objects: a pizza-parlor table, a cabinet with faux rustic punched-tin inlay, a "plaid" footstool, a coat rack decorated in a rainforest theme, a gold and silver mosaic shelf. In the back, you'll find all the design patterns used in the projects; you can copy them and use them over and over.
Many of these projects are perfect for children's rooms and activity areas, especially the chalkboard dresser, which is just made for little hands to scribble on. --Stefanie Durbin

Love at first site.......2002-01-08
Wow! Every now and then an artist (or group of artists) comes up with a great artistic book and it actually gets published and has great photography and writing staff. But it's no wonder; the book was done in Asheville, NC, (USA) a mountain tourist town filled with great boutiques, galleries, artsy stores and many talented artists. I borrowed this book from my local library and had no idea I would fall in love so much so that; I had no choice but to purchase my own copy! I am a professional artist and believe me; most books of this kind have prooved to be totally useless to me; but this book was so inspirational, delightful and colorful; I am coming up with numerous designs of my own as a result of the great artists that put together this book. I hope I get to meet these people some day; so I can personnally thank them for their great work!!!!
Not as helpful as I thought.......2001-04-23
While all the projects in this book were nice, it did not help me at all. I did not realize until I got the book and opened it that the projects were very specific--not just techniques, but patterns for specific designs. Like silhouettes of birds eating berries; a frog on a plant, etc. They were all very loud and colorful--too much so for my purposes at the moment.Even the ones with checks or squares were very design-specific. I thought that the book was going to show more different techniques to use on furniture instead of definite designs. And like I said, the designs were pretty and unique but if you're not very artistically inclined (as I am not), then it would be hard to adapt them or change them to create new ones for your project. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad book at all--it is just not useful if you are not looking for odd, very loudly colored patterns for painting furniture. It shows no dragging, flogging, etc. techniques or how to layer colors or anything like that. I didn't use one thing out of the book, so it was a waste of money for me.
This book demands attention with all of it's great ideas.......2000-07-17
I thumb through furniture painting books when I'm at the library - Usually, I can tell right away if there's something in it that will capture my attention. When I first thumbed through this book, I was amazed at how every single feature jumped out at me. The colors used on these pieces of furniture are striking and the designs are beautiful and unique. This book offers something different than all of the rest - it does two things: first, all of the fabulous ideas get you excited and motivated. It makes you want to run right out and find something to paint. Second, each piece of furniture is so uniquely done, you cannot help but want to use your imagination and create your own works of art. Have you ever considered decoupaging tissue paper onto a table? How about napkins? It sounds unusual, but these designs work beautifully. I would purchase this book in an instant - it is one of the best out there, in my opinion.
Whimsical and Unusual Designs.......2000-01-16
This book really accelerated my creativity. I have copied several designs as well as modifying others. Simple, unusual and detailed directions. Utilizing common furniture pieces. Unusual supplies are included to make the projects even more exciting, such as napkins, blueprints, etc. Have Fun!

Customer Reviews:
A poor representation of current styles.......2005-08-12
I have several of Charles Randalls' prior books dating to 1994. Sadly, this one did not deviate much from their content. This is a very poor representation of current trends and styles. Most photographs looked as though they were taken in the 80s' and 90s'
As an interior designer, I am always looking for ways to offer my clients new and fresh ideas for their windows. I would be embarrassed to bring this book as an aide in selection of window treatment styles

Can you get any better than straight from his mouth?.......1999-07-26
When I read this book I was surprised to find it was full of quotes from the world's greatest singer. That's basically all it is, and it was great. Surprising insights on the singers personality. It includes his thoughts on other bands, thoughts on his own band, insights on how he deals with fame, and stuff about himself. A must-read for hard-core fans. It also has a lot of great pictures, though they are all in black and white.
